Central delivers gifts to Cyril Ross Home Children.
Central FC Release.

Central F.C.’s Trinidad & Tobago national striker, Willis Plaza, together with staff from the Pro League club, visited Cyril Ross Home in Tunapuna on Monday to present clothes, shoes, school items and personal grooming kits.

The items were donated by various businesses including Jonesy Sports Wear, Port of Spain, Oscar Francois Ltd and CDS Supplies.  The Cyril Ross Home is the only establishment in T&T providing homes to children born with HIV. The twenty five children in residence range from 1 year old babies to teenagers.

“Every year we try to arrange an event to coincide with World Aids Day” said Central F.C. Marketing Manager, Devica Ali. “This year, in particular, we wanted to remind people that HIV is totally preventable and, even if you do contract the virus, you can live a full and beneficial life.”

Ali said that the public had become so concerned with the Ebola virus, that HIV was being forgotten. “T&T is still far behind other countries regarding support for people living with HIV. Here, we still stigmatise people who have the virus, yet it may only be transmitted through transmission of fluids such as blood.”

“These kids just want to be treated like everybody else” said 27 year old Plaza, Central F.C.’s top goal scorer last season. “They’re a great bunch of kids and your heart goes out to them.” Plaza, who is currently unable to represent Central F.C. until January following his return from playing in Belgium added “It’s really nice to meet these kids and see how excited they are about the gifts. “

Central F.C. presented the home with T shirts, jeans and shoes donated by Glenford Jones of Jonesy Sportswear. “It was great to see the children choosing which items they wanted.” said Ali “They also received various hair care products, soaps and deodorants donated by Oscar Francois. But I think only the staff were pleased to see the school products which we received from CDS Supplies!!”

The older children were in for another treat as they got to wear their new clothes that evening when they went to Ato Boldon Stadium to watch Central F.C. play Point Fortin.

“We wanted to make their day complete” said Central F.C. Operations Director, Kevin Harrison. “So we spoke to our friends at Bankers Insurance, who were kind enough to pay for a bus to carry the children to the game.” During the game, Harrison introduced the children to National Head Coach, Stephen Hart.

“It was really good of Stephen to take the time to chat to the boys and girls. They were a little awe struck at first, but soon Stephen was bombarded with questions. I think this was the children’s favourite part of the evening.” The children were also treated to soft drinks and a KFC meal courtesy of Bankers Insurance to round off their evening.

“As usual” said Harrison “We have to thank all of the people who made today happen for these children. These kids often feel isolated an ostracised by the community, so it was fantastic to see these companies reach out to give them a special day.”

Central F.C. will begin its annual Christmas Hamper collections this Saturday in California. Anyone wishing to donate tinned or non perishable food can contact the club on 679 5060

It's really sad because these kids really are victims. All were born with HIV, and while most of them are asymptomatic, their lives are still affected. Some of the kids love playing football (one girl is quite talented) but they cannot join a team or even attend coaching clinics because the parents of the other kids would need to be told of their status.

We were not allowed to take photos of them in case they are stigmatised or bullied. We took a photo from behind with them all chatting to Stephen Hart, but were told we couldn't even use that photo!
