so I guess story has already been written as this world cup seems so scripted...the US beats Japan 1-0 to avenge their 2011 loss as Abby Wambauch scores a game winning penalty.

I think the script writers were hoping for a USA vs Canada showdown....but the "revenge" angle has a sensational Hollywood appeal to it that works as well.

I surprised the fox soccer not complaining about how bad the ref is.
I guess is because she not from one of them 3rd world countries.
Have to give the US credit for the victory, best game for them so far.
That being said, ref made two bad decisions that influenced the outcome of the game.
A clear path foul is a straight red card which meant the US would have been down to 10 players for the rest of the game.
The US penalty was a foul outside the box and  the assistant should have helped the ref with that call.

it's funny how they justified it... "the foul occurred outside but continued into the box"
For my money they would have been better off saying it was a close call and we missed it. I was willing to give the refs the benefit of the doubt on this one as I was sure it was a penalty until I saw the replay in slow mo. And even then I thought  it was debatable.

No such qualms on the first penalty, though. Shoulda be a straight red!

Good third-place game between England and Germany so far.  0-0 in the 50', game very much poised in the balance.  Jill Scott for England, is a player!

I got that when you said she was the Crouch of the women's team.

Physically she reminds me of him... but touches for a player her size as well.  She's a midfielder though, so contributing even more on defense.

Aside:  These women have been undermined by poor offciating and poor tournament administration.  From the artificial surface thing, to the rigged draw, if FIFA gave a damn they'd have a lot to answer for.  But of course, they won't care.

Hate that this post had to prove prescient... very soft, controversial penalty awarded to England, Fara Williams with the conversion in the 108'... 1-0 England.

I eh see the game yet; but, if you mean in the tournament in general, ah feel iz because she squandered her opportunity in the group stage. Ah was looking for her to do much more but she wasn't penetrating defences, and I found she lingered on the ball in decisive moments.

Heard them say she was the leading scorer in qualifying... her speed made all the difference today.

RECAP OF THE SEMI-FINALS

Japan edge brave England to set up USA rematch
FIFA.com

Japan are into their second successive FIFA Women’s World Cup™ Final but it took a cruel and unlucky injury-time own goal from Laura Bassett for the pair to be separated.

England gave as good as they got throughout the entire match with the two teams sharing first-half penalties via the boost of Aya Miyama and Fara Williams. The match seemed destined for 30 extra minutes only for England’s goal to be breached in the penultimate minute of injury time.

Barely 30 seconds into the contest Jodie Taylor left fly with an impressive effort which narrowly went the wrong side of the post from a position similar to her crucial quarter-final opener against Canada.

There was plenty of early endeavour from both teams but little in the way of gilt-edged goalscoring opportunities. England’s Toni Duggan fired a snapshot over while the same player failed to make good contact on the volley from a Jill Scott cross a few minutes later.

Then from nothing Japan were in front. A perfectly flighted ball from central defender Azusa Iwashimizu released a flying Saori Ariyoshi behind a flat-footed defence only for the No19 to be brought down by Claire Rafferty, allowing Nadeshiko captain Miyama to coolly slot home from the penalty spot.

Yet within seven minutes England were level from the penalty spot, in a sequence similar to that in Tuesday’s first semi-final between USA and Germany. This time Steph Houghton was deemed to have been brought down by Yuki Ogimi and Williams crashed home a near unstoppable effort from the penalty spot.

Both teams opened the second period with good tempo and Duggan crashed a shot onto the crossbar just past the hour mark leaving England just inches away from taking the lead. Almost immediately substitute Ellen White had goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori at full stretch to push away a goalbound effort amid a succession of corners for the Europeans. From one of those corners Scott pushed a header narrowly wide as England turned up the heat.

Japan’s resilience, however, is renowned and the holders were in no mood to relinquish their crown without a fight. Mana Iwabuchi was introduced with 20 minutes remaining and the quarter-final match-winner was immediately at her livewire best jinking into the penalty area and firing a shot wide. Mizuho Sakaguchi then kept the 31,467 crowd on edge with a header wide.

England to their credit did not allow Japan to play with their usual composure setting up a desperate finale as both teams searched for a winner in normal time. Japan made one final break down the right flank and Bassett’s stretch to cut out a cross only served to turn the ball into her own goal off the underside of the bar.

Match Highlights

USA into Final after a tale of two penalties
FIFA.com

A Carli Lloyd-inspired USA are into their second successive FIFA Women’s World Cup Final™ following an intensely fought semi-final in Montreal against Germany as the Americans ran out 2-0 winners.

The contest was marked by a costly spot-kick failure from Celia Sasic, while Lloyd tucked away her penalty a few minutes later before then setting up Kelley O’Hara for a late sealer. The match was played at high tempo and with a level of physicality that you would expect of a match of this importance between the two highest ranked teams in the world.

USA had the better of the opening half as the Germans pressed hard when not in possession, while the Stars and Stripe looked typically steadfast in defence. Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch striker Alex Morgan had the best sights of goal. She firstly was denied by Nadine Angerer in a one-on-one opportunity after making a perfectly timed run behind the backline. Morgan then struck another effort wide from an acute angle from close range.

After the break Germany had a rare sight of goal as Anja Mittag pushed a header just wide, before drama on the hour mark. USA central defender Julie Johnston failed to deal with a bouncing through ball and fouled Alexandra Popp as the midfielder slipped in on the blindside. However, Canada 2015 top-scorer Sasic pushed her spot-kick wide amid US celebrations and tears of relief from Johnston.

Nine minutes later it was USA’s turn to earn a penalty as Morgan’s charging run ended with a foul by Annike Krahn and the ever-reliable Lloyd tucked away the opportunity.

Germany pushed for an equaliser but USA sealed the contest with six minutes remaining as Lloyd dribbled into the penalty area and coolly pulled the ball back for O’Hara to gleefully fire home from close range.

USA will now face the winner of Wednesday’s second semi-final between Japan and England for the right to be crowned 2015 Women’s World Cup champions on Sunday in Vancouver.

THIRD-PLACE MATCH SUMMARY

England create history with Germany win
FIFA.com

England outlasted two-time champions Germany in extra time to secure third-place thanks to a lone Fara Williams penalty.

It was a first-ever win for England over Germany in 21 attempts after a match of end-to-end action and endeavour from both teams.

The action started on eight minutes as a Tabea Kemme’s cross caused chaos for England, forcing Steph Houghton to hook clear off the line just moments after receiving treatment for an ankle injury.

Within a minute Germany striker Celia Sasic had a chance to extend her lead atop the adidas Golden Boot chart but her weak shot was easily gathered by goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

England soon found their feet and created several opportunities, most notably Houghton failed to make good contact from close range after superb work down the right from the always lively Lucy Bronze.

The half-chances continued at each end, in particular Germany looked likely through the direct running of Daebritz, Simone Laudehr and others.

Bardsley maintained parity with a superb save from Daebritz eight minutes after the break following a sweeping Germany move in one for the highlights reel.

The litany of half chances continued in front of Bardsley’s goal, in particular Kebbe fired narrowly wide from 20 metres.

However, England pushed hard for a winner as the contest became stretched and Jill Scott couldn’t get a shot away with only Nadine Angerer to beat, while Williams saw her fierce goal-bound shot hit a lurking defender.

England may have finished the game stronger but Germany shaded the first period of extra time with a succession of corners causing concern for Bardsley.

Finally the deadlock was broken a minute into the second period of extra time with Kebbe deemed to have hauled down substitute Lianne Sanderson. Williams, just as she had done in the semi-final against Japan, coolly converted by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Sophie Schmidt pushed a back-post header wide and Anja Mittag saw her free-kick blocked as Germany could find no way through in the dying minutes.

Match Highlights

Silvia Neid, Germany coach
It wasn’t difficult to prepare for this match. Of course the players were sad after the semi-final defeat, but that only lasted for a day, and then we got our focus back and tried to work on certain points that we were keen to improve. In terms of preparation, the work we did was good, but our performance was not. I’m not surprised by the progress that England have made since our match with them at Wembley, and we saw what they were capable of throughout the tournament, where they got better with every match. They continue to improve and today, they really wanted this win, causing us a lot of problems, especially when it came to winning 50-50 balls.

Mark Sampson, England coach

It’s a lot nicer to be in the position we are today than after our last match. It’s really an incredible result when you take into account the challenge we were facing and the quality of our opponents. We were able to bounce back after our semi-final experience, and our performance shows how much quality we have in our squad. Claiming third place in this competition while finally beating Germany and finishing as the best European team are the things that people will remember about this side. It took some time to put the semi-final to the back of our minds. We really thought that we could win this World Cup, which made the way in which we were eliminated even crueller. All we wanted to show today was that, although we can be beaten, we can also get back up on our feet.

Game f**king over.  I tune in 3 minutes in and it was already 1-0.  Then they score off some weak Japanese defending on a corner.  Now they score again.  Japan at sea. 3-0.

That feeling Lloyd playing with is probably the best feeling a player can dream of, a hattrick in 15 mins of a WC final AND she lob the keeper from half line.
