CONCACAF releases host city list for 2015 Gold Cup knockout rounds

NEW YORK -- The knockout rounds of next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup will be played in Atlanta, Baltimore and Philadelphia as well as East Rutherford, New Jersey. Part of the tournament will also be played in Canada for the first time.

The United States will open its title defense in the 12-nation championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean on July 7 at Frisco, Texas, CONCACAF announced Tuesday.

The Americans, who are in Group A, play three days later at Foxborough, Massachusetts, and close their first round July 13 at Kansas City, Kansas.

Costa Rica will be in Group B and open July 9 at Carson, California, then play three days later at Houston and July 14 at Toronto.

- CONCACAF Power Rankings: Costa Rica surprise No. 1

In Group C, Mexico starts July 9 at Chicago, plays three days later at Glendale, Arizona, and then July 15 at Charlotte, North Carolina.

The site of the final is to be announced next year. The tournament also includes Canada, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. The final spot will be determined by a playoff between French Guyana and Honduras on March 25 and 29.

The U.S. won the 2013 title and if it wins next year's tournament will qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. If another nation wins the 2015 Gold Cup, it would meet the Americans in a playoff for the Confederations Cup berth.

Group A - USA, PAN, HON, Haiti - Tough Group AKA Group Of Death. I dont see French Guiana beating Honduras over two legs...if they do, group will still be a dog-fight between USA, PAN, HAITI . I see USA and PAN taking top two. Honduras is normally good at home and not soo good when playing on foreign soil.

Group C - should be Mexico, and toss-up between T&T and Guatemala for the top two spots. If the Molinos and Jones etc turn up for T&T, then i see mexico and T&T as the top 2.

Group B - I'd say CRC to finish top, second place can be any of JAM/CAN/EL SAL. This appears a tough group as well on paper. Jamaica will be involved in Copa America around the same time, so may need to choose from a wide pool of players for both tourneys.

Great group for the likes of T&T Jam because potentially 2 good teams will be knocked out.

2 best 3rd spots available, I'm sure one of Panama or Honduras will sneak 1.

I would like to see TTFA use the June calendar smartly by playing the 2 games vs a Latin style of opposition as all 3 teams in our Group play that style.

Get 2 friendlies home or away in South America or Concacaf , options include Venezvuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras.

It is pointless playing physical styled opposition such as European, African teams as the only teams that compare to them in Concacaf are Jamaica, USA and Canada.

We should use our windows vs those Latin style teams to really get to grips on how to win vs that style and also play away games to get used to the intimidating atmosphere that will only magnify throughout qualification

T&T get ‘tricky’ Gold Cup group.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s team will open their 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup against Guatemala in Chicago on July 9.

This was determined at the official draw for the competition in Philadelphia which was attended by head coach Stephen Hart.

The Toyota Stadium in the greater Dallas Metroplex will host the opening games of the Gold Cup on Tuesday, July 7, featuring reigning Gold Cup champions United States against the winners of the Honduras vs French Guiana play-in series later this month, preceded by Panama vs Haiti to kick off the evening.

T&T  will face the Guatemalans at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9 in the opening match of a  Group C double-header which will see Mexico taking on Cuba in the second outing.

T&T then face Cuba on July 12 at the Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix and Mexico on July 15 at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Hart who also attended a CONCACAF workshop in Philadelphia yesterday, described  T&T’s group as a “tricky” one.

“This is the sixth Gold Cup I will be involved in. My experience is that on paper versus the field are two different matters. The group must be respected and is a tricky one, especially facing Mexico in the last game,” Hart told TTFA Media.

“The opening game is crucial, we must strive for consistency and get into the knockout phase. It is important to prepare well and be in good moments individually and collectively. This is also part of the overall process of preparing for the 2018 World Cup qualification which begins for us in November.

“Between now and July, I will continue have a look at the best available players to make up our squad.

The Panama game this month will be ideal to provide an opportunity for potential players to fight for selection. Obviously I will continue to scout the leagues so the challenge for players is to strive for consistency.

“I expect the tournament to live up to its usual expectations and of course we will give every effort to ensure our performance is a solid one,” Hart added.

For the first time since the 2003 edition, the Gold Cup will feature a third-place match, to be played on Saturday, July 25 at PPL Park — one day prior to the grand finale at the same venue on Philadelphia.

The 2015 Gold Cup quarter-finals will be played in Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium and New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, respectively.

The victorious quarter-finalists then move to Atlanta for the semifinals, at the Georgia Dome on Wednesday, July 22, before the tournament’s Grand Finale weekend in Philadelphia.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Hartie.... all group tricky.

We get a very good group, which group you prefer?

Take care of Guatemala and Cuba and then worry about Mexico.

I would have made a bold move for the July 15th. But that is mid week, Wednesday. Hope  Trini make it thru, and come up north to Baltimore or Philly/NJ. Then I definitely be there.

‘Warriors’ aiming for strong Gold Cup showing
Trindiad Express Online Reports

KENWYNE JONES, Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s football skipper, wants Trinidad and Tobago to at least match or better its quarter-final showing at the last CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Stephen Hart’s first assignment as Trinidad and Tobago senior national coach saw the Soca Warriors get out of the group stage and reach the quarter-final stage in the 2013 tournament — a best showing since 2000 when reaching the semi-final stage under Bertille St Clair.
“I think we will be looking to do better than we did last time. Since that last Gold Cup we’ve been through quite a few growing experiences like the games against Argentina, Iran and the Caribbean Cup. I think the team now has grown stronger,” Jones told TTFA Media.
“We will be at least looking to get into the quarter finals again and try to get to the semi finals. We have a good bunch and I know this is what the team will aspire towards,” added the Cardiff City forward.
Jones wants to see T&T aim for a spot in the semi-finals, going a step further than the quarter finals in 2013, where T&T lost 1-0 to Mexico, after drawing 2-2 with El Salvador defeating Honduras 2-0 in its final group match to advance to the knockout phase. Jones believes T&T’s preparations and  appearance at the 2015 Gold Cup will play a significant part in the team’s readiness for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers which commence in November at the semi-final stage for the Soca Warriors.
“We have got a decent Group draw and we’ve played these teams before. We’ve been up against them in recent times and we know what they can give, moreso for us having the experience  from the squad we had at the last Gold Cup, it should auger well for us,” Jones said. “We may have a few new players but I think our preparations would be good and we will be able to give a good showing at the Gold Cup.”
Hart will begin his preparation for the Gold Cup with a friendly international against Panama in Port of Spain on next week Friday. Hart has hinted that his team to face Panama will be made up largely of home-based professionals,  with a few overseas pros in the mix. This is all in an effort to expand the national pool as the team prepares for the  2018 World Cup qualifiers and the Gold Cup campaign.
Like Hart, Jones thinks that the Gold Cup campaign will be great preparation for the untimate goal of preparing Trinidad and Tobago to qualify for its second World Cup, after being on the field in Germany in 2006.
“These games coming up will be another step in preparation for us for the World Cup qualifiers because it’s against similar teams we will play in the qualifiers also,” Jones said.
“From the time M.r Hart took over the team, we have been building and growing since then with focus on the World Cup campaign. Every game we have played since then counts as experience, no matter who the opponent is.”
“It’s a long way through the qualifiers and you need a decent group of players, fit and in form, for the qualifiers. It’s also the first time a lot of the players will be playing in World Cup qualifying and every                                                                                  bit of preparation will serve them well,” Jones concluded.

Interesting article on the rise of CONCACAF conference in soccer

Long gone is the time when the nets of the best teams of CONCACAF were simply used for target practice by European and South American teams. Watching the goalkeepers picking up the ball from the back of the nets was a common scene. Fortunately, CONCACAF has risen to become a force that no other confederations can look down upon.

In 1974 at Munich, Poland mercilessly pulverized Haiti 7-0. In 1978, Mexico was lucky to escape the wrath of the like of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Heinz Flohe of West Germany with a 6-0 defeat; in 1982, Hungary massacred El Salvador 10-1 in Spain; in 1990, Czechoslovakia severely punished USA 5-1. Scores like those were considered normal for the minnows we were. Despite some spotty good showings of teams like Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, and Honduras, CONCACAF was generally considered the Cinderella of the world cups, a status they shared with Oceania and sometimes Asia. However, gone is that time when a representative from the CONCACAF region was considered a weak team. CONCACAF football is now at a level where the top 10 teams of the region can hold their own against the traditional powerhouses.

In 1998, their only World Cup appearance thus far, Jamaica became both the smallest nation to score in and the smallest nation to win a World Cup match. Their appearance wasn't spectacular, with a 3-1 loss to Croatia and a 5-0 thumping from Argentina, but they did beat Japan 2-1 in their final game. Jamaica's success with such a small population and such limited resources is impressive. They made it to the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying in this past campaign (one stage further than Canada got), but finished last in the hexagonal round.

Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, its first-ever qualification for the tournament. They became the smallest country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2006, succeeding Haiti for the title. In Germany, Trinidad and Tobago was grouped with England, Sweden and Paraguay in Group B. The team earned some international respect after a draw with Sweden in their opening game and managing to hold England scoreless for 83 minutes. Trinidad and Tobago finished with their first-ever point from World Cup play after finishing 0–1–2 for the tournament.

In 2013, Haiti took Spain and Italy to deep waters in two high profiles friendlies in Brazil. Spain was pushed to the limit to hold on to its meager 2-1 lead while Italy was lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw. Those results were a prelude to what happened at the World Cup of 2014 where Costa Rica won its group undefeated and in style beating former world champions Italy and Uruguay. USA and Mexico also posted high profile victories over respectable gatekeeper teams like Cameroun, Ghana, and Croatia. CONCACAF was the third most successful confederation behind UEFA and CONMEBOL.

Interestingly, CONCACAF teams keep rising to surpass themselves. In recent international friendlies, CONCACAF teams dominate their opponents from various confederations. On March 27, Haiti traveled to China where it forced the host to work hard for a 2-2 draw while Jamaica overpowered Venezuela with a 2-1 victory. Paraguay, a respectable contender from CONMEBOL, was lucky to escape the Ticos with a 0-0. The following day, El Salvador traveled to the lion den in Argentina where the Cuscatlecos delivered a great fight against the several times world cup titlist and runner-up at the last world cup before losing 2-0 but Mexico quickly brushed that aside with a 1-0 win over Ecuador. Therefore, in two days CONCACAF teams registered 2 victories, 2 draws, and just 1 defeat versus CONMEBOL teams.

The rise of super teams capable of taking on the world traditional powers in all three regions of the confederation will certainly lead to more entertaining and competitive Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying tournaments. In the Caribbean, teams like Jamaica, Haiti, and Trinidad are no-pushovers whereas Central America is home to giant killers like Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador. North America features Mexico and USA, two teams highly respected outside the confederation. The level of play and  player skills at the latest U-20 tournament in Jamaica were very remarkable. We have had a glimpse at the stars of tomorrow and we saw them in every team of the tournament. In fact, each country features a number of brilliant youth players who would be on the short lists of any European or South American teams. It is safe to say that CONCACAF football will continue to rise.

That's correct. Whoever wrote that article did not do proper research.

On another note. Given the draw, TT has a good chance of making the Copa Centenario. Anyone know what the protocol is for deciding the two remaining spots if all 4 qualified teams make the semi. I think the 2 spots up for grabs will be battled between -

TT
Panama
Haiti
Honduras
El Salvador

Haiti, Honduras and Panama  are in the group of death. So only one (maybe two) can go through.

Lookout for JA. They are leveraging their overseas born recruits. Their pool is getting DEEPER and they are getting stronger. I will like for us to meet them in the knockout and win the game.. This will put us through to the Copa.. ironically we will do the same thing they did to us.

Just like JA, Copa will probably be our second biggest accomplishment in football.
