Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are not part of 15-man West Indies World Cup squad according to Dinanath Ramnarine, the former West Indies legspinner and former longtime president of West Indies Players Association.

"Confirmed Bravo and Pollard are both out of the 2015 WC," Ramnarine, who was the WIPA CEO and president between 2001 and 2012, said on his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon Caribbean time. Ramnarine's tweet came as a surprise considering the WICB has not yet announced officially the World Cup squad even if there has been a growing speculation about Bravo and Pollard missing out once they were left out of the ODI series in South Africa. Asked the source of his information, Ramnarine said he could not reveal but said it was true.

The WICB, when contacted by ESPNcricinfo, did not want to respond to Ramnarine's statement, saying that they would "neither confirm nor deny" the news and asked to await a formal announcement likely on Saturday if not later Friday once the first Twenty20 between South Africa and West Indies is over.

There have been no public comments made by Bravo and Pollard. The two are currently with the West Indies squad for the three-match Twenty20 series.

Last month Clive Lloyd's selection panel dropped the trio of Bravo, Pollard and Darren Sammy from the five-match ODI series against South Africa, starting on January 16. Jason Holder, an inexperienced fast bowler, replaced Bravo as the ODI captain while Sammy was later added back into the squad.

The change in the ODI leadership came two months after West Indies pulled out of their tour to India with one ODI, one T20 and three Tests pending, due to a protracted disagreement between the players, the board and the players' association over the payment structure specified by the players' revised contracts. Bravo had vocalised the players' stance in several letters to the WICB and WIPA.

According to Ramanarine, the WICB had ignored the advice of its own task force set up to investigate the contracts dispute, which lead to the players pulling out of the India tour. The task force - comprising Michael Gordon, Wes Hall and Richard Cheltenham - said all three parties including WICB, WIPA and the players carried the blame for the debacle. "WICB set up their own Task Force - Task Force findings - WICB wrong, WIPA wrong and Players wrong End result - Pollard & Bravo get dropped," Ramnarine, who tussled long, hard and frequently with WICB during his WIPA role, said.

The WICB has remained silent despite vehement criticism to explain the reasoning behind the dropping of the trio from some eminent former West Indies players like Michael Holding and even St Vincent and Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.

In a guest column on ESPNcricinfo, Holding said the players were being punished by the administrators for no reason. What was appalling for him was how a player like Bravo, who had made it in the ICC ODI Team of 2014, could not find a place in the West Indies squad.

In a similar scathing assessment, Gonsalves blamed WICB president Dave Cameron for "dishonouring" the agreement that the players who abandoned the India tour in October would not be victimised.

According to Ralph Thorne, the players' legal counsel, the inclusion of the dropped trio in the Twenty20 leg of the South Africa series was just a "consolation prize" and a deliberate move by the WICB to push aside his clients from participating in the World Cup. "Their retention in the Twenty20 team is not merely a consolation prize, but that inclusion, joined with their exclusion from the ODI team, is a gentle form of ruthlessness that disqualifies them from the most meaningful opportunity to compete for a place in the World Cup squad."

(Story Updated: Jan 12, 2015 at 8:48 PM ECT  )

Chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd has defended the non-selection of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard to the West Indies World Cup side insisting that the pair’s omission was not victimisation and that the time was right try something different.

The former West Indies captain, speaking on the Sportsmax Zone, also noted that it is not the end of the road for the Trinidad and Tobago pair who he encouraged to earn their way back into the side.

Asked if he was given a directive not to choose the T&T all-rounder, Lloyd said: “No. I never spoke to anybody.”

“Let people understand that we have been at the bottom rung of the ladder for the last eight years or more with the same players, recycling people all the time,” Lloyd explained.

“The point is that now we tried to see if we can change things. It is obvious picking a West Indies team is not easy. If you look at the stats of our players, they are not wonderful so we will be picking players averaging 20, 25, some even 19...We starting from scratch,” he added.

He said there were two days of discussions between the selectors and the Windies ODI captain and he described the decision to leave out Bravo and Pollard as a difficult one but a necessary one.

“There was two days of discussions with the three others selectors and the captain and there were very strong arguments for the players and we came out with what we though was a pretty good team,” Lloyd explained.

“It was not easy to leave out those two guys. It is a discussion that went on and one and on and in the end we thought that we have so many all-rounders. We were trying to see if we can introduce some new faces and as far as I am concerned I think we have a good all-round one-day side,” he added.

“It is not a situation where these guys have been wiped away. They have a chance at playing for the West Indies again. We have a new captain and hopefully he will get the support that is needed and we can put in a very good performance,” the chairman of selectors insisted.

Asked about the “ordinary averages” of Darren Sammy, and Andre Russell, who have similar averages to Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard but who have been included in the World Cup side, Lloyd said: “Sammy has helped people along and I think he will be good for young Jason (Holder) but I actually think Andre Russell could be a fine all-rounder if he applies himself.”

“We think that it is important that we have a settled side. I have no axe to grind, I don’t dislike anybody. We want the best for the West Indies,” he insisted.

“It is going to take some doing because we don’t have a great set of players to choose from. What we have is some good young players coming through from the Under-19 and we will reward them when they do well.

“We are trying to get West Indies cricket from the bottom rung of the ladder to move further up,” said Lloyd.

Speaking about Chris Gayle’s comments saying the decision to omit the T&T pair from the World Cup side was “ridiculous”, Lloyd said: “I am very disappointed with Chris that he said that because he is somebody I respect but he is not a selector.”

“He might think it was victimisation but I have nothing against him. Quite a few of the other players are playing why are they not victimised? Lloyd questioned.

“We are trying to get the best team out there. We have to try to get out of that number eight position. We have to try different things. We have to try younger people and people who are performing in our cricket,” he added.

The man say the team not doing well so he drop two of the best players in the world for "younger ones."

He admits that Russel could do better but must apply himself. So he KEEPS Russel and drops KP and Bravo.  ???

Worst yet, the man say they could EARN their way back into the WI squad. WHO keeping them out to begin with.

Lloyd has really diminished his credibility here.

This is my present status on FB:

I never thought of Clive Lloyd as a public Tun Tun hole.
But this man sends a depleted side to the WC saying they building for the future. Instead of waiting until after the WC and sending the strongest possible side.

Worse yet, he says they need young allrounders to have a chance.
 Pollard is 27.
Andre Russel is 26 has scored three half centuries in ODIs.
Pollard has scored three centuries and seven half centuries.
Lloyd admits Russel has underperformed but surprisingly he is retained at the expense of two of the best players in the World.

Why focus on allrounders?
Ramdhin is 30. No young keepers?

Benn is 33. No young spinners?

Simmons is 30. No young openers?

They have obviously singled out these fellas.
Worse yet they Cacahole says nobody influenced him.

So is Lloyd and only Loyd to blame.
I would love if if after the WC EVERY TT player get sick during an ODI for the rest of the year: Simmons, Bravo, Bravo, Pollard, Ramdhin, Rampaul, Narine, Badree and Gabriel.

TT alone could cut the WI ass.

I now understand why CL nickname is "the big Cyat."

WICB's stance on selection confusing

Despite the explanation that Bravo and Pollard were dropped for younger players, West Indies' squad is one of the older combinations in the World Cup

It just wouldn't be West Indies cricket without an accompanying state of turmoil.

A month before the 11th World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand, the game's most prestigious tournament, the turbulence is more evident than ever. A new captain has been given the responsibility of leading the team. His experience in the post is limited to the five ODIs in South Africa that immediately precede the World Cup. At 23, Jason Holder, an impressive, emerging allrounder, is the youngest and newest captain among the 14 World Cup finalist teams.

He has started with no head coach to lean on. Six months after Ottis Gibson was summarily sacked by WICB president Dave Cameron, the position won't be filled until after the World Cup. In the meantime, Stuart Williams continues as "coaching coordinator".

The potential difficulty of Holder's task is compounded by the furore over the dismissals of Dwayne Bravo, his predecessor as captain, and Kieron Pollard from the World Cup 15. It is a row that has filled newspaper columns and radio and TV time and involved high-profile individuals.

Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, accused Cameron of going back on his "solemn word" given at a meeting Gonsalves arranged in Port-of-Spain between the three parties involved the India pullout - the WICB, the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), and the players - at which it was accepted that no action would be taken against the players until a further review of the situation. In an angry letter to Cameron, he called it "a travesty of justice… that reeks of village vengeance, discrimination and victimisation".

The always outspoken Chris Gayle, once captain, now back in the ranks, took up the charge of victimisation following a typically devastating 90 that won the high-scoring T20 against South Africa in Johannesburg the day after the World Cup squad was announced. The absence of Bravo and Pollard, he riled, was "ridiculous" and "sad". His status as the team's one global superstar seemingly precluded censure from the board.

If Gayle's sympathies were clouded by his closeness to his long-time team-mates, the neutral reactions on television of Kepler Wessels and Shaun Pollock, both former South Africa captains, were equally strong. "Shock" and "disbelief" were words used; Wessels said their absence robbed the game's major global tournament of two of its most identifiable individuals, both highly regarded in Australia.

Cameron and chief selector, Clive Lloyd, the iconic captain of the longed-for glory days of the 1980s, vehemently defended the decisions.

Only Jason Holder's appointment as captain seems to be in sync with West Indies' purported slant towards youth © Getty Images

Cameron asserted that they were made solely on merit by "some of the biggest legends we have in West Indies cricket" (leading Test wicket-taker Courtney Walsh was also on the panel). Their judgement, Cameron revealed, was unanimously supported by his board.

Lloyd is six months into his new role. He listed the absence of "exceptional performances" from Bravo and Pollard as reason for their exclusion, adding that his panel's vision was to move forward by turning to young talent. It took two days for him and his colleagues to come to what he termed "a very difficult decision".

"You get to a point where you say, right, this is where we want to go," he said in an ESPNcricinfo interview. "It is very difficult for people to understand or to accept. But we want to move on." Such claims were difficult to credit.

Bravo was the only West Indian in the ICC's composite ODI XI for 2014. Before he was axed, he had been captain for 27 matches since being appointed in May 2013. Pollard led the team for four games when Bravo was injured in the tri-series in the Caribbean in mid-2013. Apart from everything else, their fielding added a special dynamic to the team.

Rather than the players' cricketing records, a more logical assumption was that the debacle in India did feature in the selectors' conclusions. Two deterrents prevented Cameron from admitting as much.

It was not to say that Bravo and, indeed, all those in India, did not deserve strong discipline for their action. It was a widely shared opinion that they certainly did. Yet the task force set up by the WICB itself to investigate all aspects of the problem apportioned blame equally to the WICB, the WIPA and the players. The BCCI pointed the finger directly at the WICB for its "inability to resolve internal issues with its players". Given such a background, if Bravo and Pollard were to be penalised, so too would Cameron and WIPA president Wavell Hinds have to be. That was never going to happen.

On the stated plan to inject youth in the team and build for the future, Holder's promotion is the only evidence of that. Eight of the squad are over 30 at the time of West Indies' first World Cup match against Ireland, on February 16 (Denesh Ramdin is 30 before it is over); the one newcomer, the left-hand batsman Jonathan Carter, is 27 and almost seven years in the regional game. The average age of 28.66 makes West Indies' among the oldest combinations in the World Cup.

There was a puzzling follow-up to Bravo's ousting. Having effectively eliminated him from ODIs, the WICB immediately presented him with a retainer contract for the coming year. If it was meant to ensure his availability for the T20 internationals, none are scheduled for West Indies by September 30, when the contract expires.

Viv Richards, who had starring roles in West Indies' two, and only, World Cup triumphs, in 1975 and 1979, wrote in a column on the ICC's website that any limited-overs team would be "happy to have two players of the calibre of Bravo and Pollard".

He believed that, given the distractions off the field, "the dressing room will not be a comfortable place to be in", adding that it was plain from Gayle's comments "that players are disgruntled and I am unsure how unified they are".

He offererd a simple solution: "They might also like to use the off-field events to motivate themselves as a unit".

Only if it was as straightforward as that.
