USA U-20 MNT Earns Playoff Berth with 1-0 Win against Trinidad & Tobago at 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship
ussoccer.com

Bradford Jamieson IV scored his second goal of the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team defeated Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

With the victory, the USA earned second place in Group A to advance to the playoff stage of the tournament. The U.S. (3-1-1, 10 points) and Guatemala tied with 10 points apiece, but the USA earned the tiebreaker advantage by virtue of scoring more goals in the tournament (12) than Guatemala (6). Both sides have earned playoff spots and will be joined by two playoff qualifiers out of Group B. CONCACAF will then reseed the four tournament playoff teams based on group-stage results to determine Saturday’s matchups. The two playoff winners will earn the remaining berths to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Earlier Wednesday, Panama (5-0-0, 15 points) clinched first place in Group A and earned an automatic berth to the FIFA U-20 World Cup following its 1-0 victory against Guatemala (3-1-1, 10 points). Panama and Group B winner Mexico will play in Saturday’s final of the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Group B wraps up play Thursday, after which the second- and third-place teams from that group will advance to the playoff stage.

The USA’s playoff game will take place either at 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and will be live on FOX Sports 2. Fans can also follow the action on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt and @ussoccer_esp.

After the reseeding process takes place for the four playoff teams, the second-seeded team will face the third-seeded team in the 2 p.m. match and the top-seeded and fourth-seeded teams square off in the 5 p.m. game. Those matches will be followed by the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship final between Group A winner Panama and Group B winner Mexico at 8 p.m.

The USA is in strong position for the top seed among the playoff teams. With one final day of Group B matches on the docket, the other potential playoff teams are Honduras (2-1-1, 7 points), El Salvador (1-1-2, 5 points) and Cuba (1-2-1, 4 points). Honduras is the only team that can mathematically overtake the U.S. for the top seed but would need a win and make up a significant goal differential when it plays Cuba.

Goal Scoring Rundown:

USA – Bradford Jamieson IV (Paul Arriola), 78th minute: The USA sustained a couple offensive sequences by Trinidad and countered with the fresh legs of Junior Flores down the middle of the pitch. He worked the ball out wide right to Arriola, who cut the ball into the box to Jamieson at the edge of the six-yard box. Jamieson tapped the ball past Johan Welch and between the legs of a defender into the left side of the frame for his second goal of the tournament. USA 1, TRI 0 (FINAL)

Key Saves and Defensive Stops:

USA – Zack Steffen, 30th minute: Though Trinidad & Tobago did not threaten with a shot on goal through much of the first half, a potential opportunity presented itself with a free kick from the right side. Matthew Woo Ling’s left-footed kick was dangerously placed in the middle of the box, and Steffen fought through for the interception as Trinidad tried to make a run toward the far left post.

TRI – Johan Welch, 42nd minute: USA midfielder Emerson Hyndman eluded multiple defenders near the top of the box, particularly getting past Neveal Hackshaw, to get the ball to his right foot. Hyndman then shot right-footed and Welch leapt straight up for the save, batting the ball up in the air and collecting safely.

TRI – Jesus Perez, 43rd minute: Right back Shaquell Moore pushed up toward the edge of the box and had a good look at goal only to have Trinidad defender Perez block the attempt and surrender a U.S. corner kick.

TRI – Neveal Hackshaw, 49th minute: The most clear cut scoring opportunity for either team led to a clutch block at the goal line. From an Emerson Hyndman free kick, Ben Spencer headed the ball inbounds from the end line toward Bradford Jamieson IV in the middle of the box. Jamieson shot with Trinidad goalkeeper Johan Welch out of position, but it was cleared off of the line by Hackshaw.

USA – Zack Steffen, 54th minute: Shortly after a Matthew Woo Ling free kick, the ball bounced out to Trinidad’s Duane Muckette well outside of the box. Muckette’s dangerous strike eluded USA center back Cameron Carter-Vickers, but Steffen lined himself up for the save.

Additional Notes:

  • The USA moved to 10-2-2 all-time against Trinidad & Tobago in this tournament.
  • For the first time in this year’s CONCACAF U-20 Championship, USA head coach Tab Ramos went with the identical starting lineup in back-to-back games.
  • Zack Steffen earned his fourth cap of the event with the start in goal.
  • The defense featured John Requejo at left back, Shaquell Moore at right back and the center back combination of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Matt Miazga. Requejo and Carter-Vickers have played every minute of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
  • The midfield group in the USA’s 4-4-2 formation included Tommy Thompson on the right, Romain Gall on the left, Russell Canouse at defensive midfield and Emerson Hyndman in the attacking role. Canouse wore the captain’s armband, and Thompson earned his fifth start in qualifying. He is the only USA midfielder to start in every match.
  • Ben Spencer and Bradford Jamieson IV were paired up front together for a third straight match.
  • The USA brought in Paul Arriola for Spencer in the 60th minute, earning his fifth cap off the tournament and third appearance in a reserve role.
  • Junior Flores replaced Gall in the 69th minute.
  • U.S. defender Conor Donovan made his second appearance of the tournament, replacing Thompson in the 84th minute for the USA’s final sub.

I now watching the game on ESPN there...and after 8 years I now agree with Beenie for benchin Latas.

When that goal score, we were dominating the US. Attack after attack...then a flair player like Levi Garcia decide to dribble the ball when he had 7 red shirts around him. He lose the ball close to the USA penalty area, but big teams punish those mistakes. One counter-attack against two centre backs and a keeper and 10 other men dreams crushed because of one individual's decision.

I not blaming the youth because they say that is what experience brings and he wasn't dribbling in a dangerous area per se. But losing the ball there when he had men in support is what made all the diff.

That is also why Jose sell Mata for them kinda thing and why certain managers can't handle flair players well.

Well, you correct in one sense, but if you had watched closely at the counter attack by the US. A TT player was tracking him and let up, allowing the the US player to pass to the tall skinny guy for the US(Jamerson) to score.

While I recognise that somebody lost the player on the counter, I still feel the more criminal act at least from a tactical point of view, is to lose the ball when you have 7 men forward and expect your defenders to bail you out.

Trinidad still remains the only team I see who consistently always seem to have only defenders behind the ball when teams attacking, with our midfielders always seemingly running alongside the play.

I did not see the game. However,
This is U20, not U11. National team, not local regional league. A player loses a ball in the opponents half, and the whole midfield and forwards out of position. U20 National team. So when guys see they open i.e in position and not getting the ball, they stay there because they in position ? really ? Maybe the coach really pick the wrong guys. Sometimes the most skillful player is not necessarily the best player.

I sometimes wonder ,what does the coach teach these young men,you are so right about our defenders and mid fielders.I just bawl sometimes, the bottom line is,get a good foreign coach.

I could be wrong, but no coach should be having to teach U20 National players to make passes, why, when or how, defensive & offensive coverage or how to play the game. This is to be done in the earlier years, and therefore, unless you hire foreign coaches to coach every club, league at the junior levels, that will be useless. At this stage - and age, it ability to understand and execute strategy, ability to read the game, and adjust to coaches instructions, thus, for National team, it boils down to selection. We talking about U20 players like they are much younger, but although some maybe, they are men.

Do our coaches use video, break down games, and review it with players before they take the field for practice?  It seems to me that if every game is filmed and analyzed, and mistakes are demonstrated in slow motion to the players, they will understand their mistakes.  If the mistakes are repeated, then that player sits or is dropped from the squad. That is the way American college, professional basketball, football and soccer operates and even American high schools do that. We need more technical savvy.  This is 2015.
Never, never, ever give up! Go T&T Warriors!

You going a bit overboard with that statement. We does see that every week in the premier league. But I do agree our defenders tend to escort their oponents into our half. By the same time they fraid to put a tackle for fear of fouling and possible expulsion. It boils down to this, stamina. These guys need to do more weight room and stress test. This will be the last of the easy tournaments for them. next is PanAm games and Olympics. Some maybe on the senior team for CFU, GC and WC. So they need to do some things on their own for self improvement.

This is what I am now coming to reply to say. Balance is what we were lacking on that play. At that stage of the game (especially) you attack to defend. As much as you are pushing forward you have to organize yourself in case you lose the ball you can delay the counter or destroy it right away. This is where a coach who is paying attention to the team shape can give the players a little yell and force them to organize themselves quickly.

King has experience. He just was not able to prepare his team properly, due to circumstances beyond his control. I am not making excuses for him. The main thing I will put blame is the mental and physical stamina of our team. Against JA, Guat.,Panama and US, at times most of them were sucking salt. They looked "bun". If they had stamina they would have withold JA in the first game and entire scenario would have been different for the rest of this tournament.

Deeks of all the challenges a coach faces in preparing a team, fitness is the one area that is most easily accomplished - it's down to work load and recovery. And yes match fitness is different. Now you point out that the coach has experience, however,an experienced coach at this level knows and understands the benchmark fitness levels players must have going into a tournament of this nature...he must understand the dept of squad that he needs going into these games in such a short time frame...the characteristics of the players he selects are based on his experience of what is needed at this level - in other words he may have to sacrifice a guy who is very "technical" for a player who has engine grit and commitment ( ah work horse ). So experience in coaching at this level allows u to better make these types of decisions....

I saw a couple of the games and many at times they camera flashed on show King giving instructions.

I think he doesn't have experience with preparing a team for Intl ball, even doh he played and is relatively successful on the local scene. Hopefully these current experiences can be built on. Yes, Player/Team selection plays a high precedence.

Yeah he was especially yesterday, but at that specific moment you know that the shape was not good and that losing possession could've/would've been costly.

Well just judging from quotes I have seen, for example Ferguson about CRonaldo in the early years and people talking about Ross Barkley recently I think it is part and parcel of having young technically gifted players. When you young and talented,  u invincible. It not crossing your mind that you might lose the ball here when you going and beats a man. But they need to have that license to feel free to mistakes in order to develop.

You sometimes learn more from failure than you do from success...and truth is they got caught on a counter because at that point yuh committing allot of players forward in search of a goal...that said, in those situations your defensive guys must adopt, what I refer to as, the "what if mentality" in other words even if we are pushing plenty men forward at any point in the game, the defends must be constantly asking themselves "what if we loose the ball am I in a good position to defend or will I find myself scrambling to get into a good defensive position after the fact. In other words dey have to be proactive. But at these late stages in ah game fitness plays a massive part in your ability to maintain that high level of focus and operate accordingly...

Spot on. Brilliant. Thank you for putting into words something I have struggled to put into words over the years.

You have to be anticipating what will happen next. Hard for a lot of youth players to learn. And big men too.
THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES

Hence my invocation of Hart's comments following the Senior Men's CFU title loss.

Guess who responsible for that detailed side of players' fitness. Players can be fit, but they will need help to cross that threshold which will allow them to develop that level of fitness to reproduce quality work.

Here's what. How you Play will have a huge impact on the players. I think our fitness was pretty good. But because we had to improvise so much we had a lot of wasted actions. It's not about how much you run. It's about where you run, when you run and what you do when you get there?

Do you think Germany was any more fit than say, England? I would hazard a guess the difference in fitness would be negligible. If so, then what was the difference between Germany winning the WC, and England going home disappointed once again?

From what I saw in the US game, the only full game that I was able to catch on TV - my sense is that they may not neccesarily have been unfit, but they appeared "leggy," actually they seemed understandably tired after playing that many games in such a short space of time...Muckette for instance was visibly restricted in his ability to dictate play in the middle - he just couldn't cover any ground. It goes without saying that without a very deep squad your ability to qualify from these tournaments is almost impossible...would have liked to see the kid John a bit more, being fresh and with his attributes he may have presented the American stoppers with ah handful.

I could be wrong, but no coach should be having to teach U20 National players to make passes, why, when or how, defensive & offensive coverage or how to play the game... We talking about U20 players like they are much younger, but although some maybe, they are men.

I saw Stephen Hart working with the senior team on this exact scenario in training sessions during the 2013 Gold Cup.
