Round of 16

Croatia cruise into last eight
FIFA.com

Croatia booked a place in the last eight of the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 2-0 victory against Germany in their first ever knockout game at this level. Talismanic captain Nikola Moro grabbed the opening goal of the game in the first half, and Davor Lovren's late goal sealed the victory to see them progress to a quarter-final against Mali in Chillan on Sunday.

The Croats gave their European counterparts an early warning shot. Good build-up play across the German penalty area led to Josip Brekalo hitting with his left foot from the edge of the box. The strike was well saved by Constantin Frommann, who pushed it onto the woodwork.

Brekalo was involved moments later, when his side took the lead after Germany failed to heed the warning. The No7 broke free down the Croatian left before whipping a cross in. Karlo Majic failed to finish but Nikola Moro took over to slide home clinically from just outside the six yard box

Germany, initially stunned by their opponents' attacking play, grew in stature as the opening half wore on. Salih Ozcan broke free of the Croatian defence, with Vinko Soldo chasing, he looked to take it around Adrian Semper but the keeper claimed the ball with a massive spread of his arms.

Passlack was involved in a couple more chances for the Germans, first crossing for Eggestein and having a shot himself, but he could not level matters.

The second half was bereft of many clear-cut opportunities, with Germany attempting to impress themselves on the game further and Croatia dealing with them well. Passlack was influential in finding space time and again down the German right but his repeated attempts to either set up his teammates or shoot himself were halted by the Croatian defence.

The standout chance of the second period for the Germans saw a delicious ball whipped in by Vitaly Janelt from their right-hand side. With Eggestein following in at the back post, the forward could not find the finish.

Lovren's stoppage time breakaway goal relieved a period of extended German pressure and rubberstamped a win that will see the Croats head to Chillan for a quarter-final showdown with Mali on Sunday.

Match Highlights

Quotes

“I’m feeling great because this is the best time of my life. I can only congratulate my players on what they did today in a hard match. We had a few matches in the European qualifying but this was the hardest. We are an excellent team, we played one hour at a great level and won a good way. At half time, I explained we had to manage the midfield better and this was key to the victory," Dario Basic, Croatia coach.

“Congratulations to Croatia for the deserved victory. We are disappointed because we expected better results from this World Cup. We played a very bad first half but in the second half we improved, yet we couldn't seize the opportunities we generated. This German team is very young and still lack the capacity to maintain an even level of play," Christian Wuck, Germany coach.

Round of 16

Mali march on as Haidara's strike downs Korea DPR
FIFA.com

Mali made easy work of Korea DPR with a 3-0 victory at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca as the African champions eased into the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, thanks to Amadou Haidara’s early blast and a brace from Sidiki Maiga.

Haidara opened the scoring in style for Mali with less than ten minutes on the clock. The No18 controlled an errant Korea DPR throw in off his chest with his first touch, his second created space and his third touch unleashed a venomous strike from 25 yards that flew by Ri Chol Song before he realised Haidara was lining up to shoot.

Ten minutes before the break, Maiga put Mali 2-0 ahead. Boubacar Traore served in a free-kick towards the penalty spot, and the No7 snuck behind the Korea DPR defence to fire home on his first touch past Ri.

Korea DPR nearly pulled one back on two occasions towards the end of the first half. Captain Han Kwang Song’s flashing header from a free-kick looked bound for the far post, but it was well saved by Samuel Diarra. Moments later, Han fired an acrobatic volley over the bar from a corner kick.

Mali put the game away shortly after the break with Haidara perfectly weighted through ball finding Maiaga behind the Korean backline to put away a first-time finish into the side netting for his second goal of the game.

Diarra was required to make a few more acrobatic saves as Korea DPR looked for a way back into the match, but Baye Ba’s squad was too strong for the Asian U-16 champions and the African champions now await a quarter-final showdown in Chillan against Croatia.

Match Highlights

QUOTES
"It was a perfect match from our side but it was also a tough game. We had some difficulties as we received some yellow cards. Congratulations to my team. Korea had a good game with quick players. But we played better. Our individual skills brought us the victory. We are happy that we are now in the next round. The team is here to win the title but we will do it step by step. This was also our last match in Talca and I want to say thank you. We will take some great memories with us and we met new friends. I never watched a game of Croatia but I’m looking forward to analyze their match against Germany."
Baye Ba, Mali coach

"Our plan was to stop the offense of Mali from the beginning as we know how strong the strikers are. But unfortunately we conceded an early goal. My players improved from match to match. This is only another step on their way in football. They learnt a lot because we played against teams from America and Africa. They got many important experiences. The players will play in older age groups. This World Cup will help them."
Yon Kwang Mu, Korea DPR coach

Round of 16

Ecuador ease past Russia with win
FIFA.com

Ecuador saw off Russia 4-1 in an entertaining FIFA U-17 World Cup Round of 16 clash to set up a quarter-final with Mexico in Coquimbo on Monday.

Jhon Pereira was the star, opening the scoring and grabbing another in the second half with remarkably similar breakaway goals. Russia's flickering moment of hope came when Fedor Chalov equalised in the opening period, but Ecuador were back in front through Washington Corozo moments later. Juan Nazareno's thunderous effort capped a resounding win for the South Americans.

Pereira put the Ecuadorians ahead in the opening exchanges. The No11 won the ball from Andrei Zakharov near the halfway line on the Ecuador right and broke free down the right before slamming it past Maksimenko.

Russia's sole moment of joy came through their leveller. Ivan Galanin broke free of the Ecuadorian midfield and disguised a through pass beautifully by feinting to shoot. His ball found Chalov and the Russian No9 clinically slotted past Jose Cevallos to level.

Their joy was short-lived as Washington Corozo outmuscled Zakharov to find himself one-on-one with Maksimenko before lashing a shot past the Russian goalkeeper.

Chalov then masterfully controlled a wide cross on his chest before volleying towards goal. An inspired save by Cevallos saw the stopper turn it behind.

Pereira then served up a mirror image of his first half opener. He received the ball after a defensive error on the Russian right and sprinted clear of the backtracking defender Semen Matviichuk. The No11 once more kept his cool to dink over the oncoming Maksimenko.

The cherry on the cake for Ecuador was Nazareno's stunning strike. The ball broke to the No5 on the edge of the Russian box. He had time to steady himself before hitting a swerving drive into the top corner. Maksimenko stood no chance.

In sending the Russians home and reaching the last eight, Ecuador match their best ever performance at a FIFA tournament, which came when they reached the quarter-finals 20 years ago on home soil, also at this tournament.

QUOTES
“We are disappointed because of our elimination. We could have done better, we had big expectations. In the first half we managed to create some opportunities. However, after the first goal, Ecuador had complete control over the match. Congratulations to Ecuador, it is a well deserved victory, they are a very strong team," Mikhail Galaktionov, Russia coach.

“I liked the match we played today. We played a great match. We took risks and we beat a very difficult team. Russia was a strong opponent but we were aggressive in attack and defence. We have physically good players and we improve our young men’s mentality. We are a strong team and we expect further progress in the World Cup," Jose Rodriguez, Ecuador coach.

Round of 16

Costa Rica halt free-scoring France to advance
FIFA.com

Costa Rica are into the quarter-finals of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup after a penalty shoot-out win over France in Puerto Montt.

The Central Americans won 5-3 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in ten years, where they will now face Belgium.

France had been free-scoring in the group stage but they found Costa Rica to be tough to break down, despite dominating large chunks of the contest.

All the goalmouth action of the first half was at the Costa Rican end with Reine Adelaide notably firing over the crossbar early on.

Jean Ruiz fired on target from distance, needing a strong intervention from Costa Rica goalkeeper Alejandro Barrientos. Next it was the turn of Odsonne Edouard to fire over the bar when presented with a good sight of goal.

Costa Rica improved their performance in the second half and they become more dangerous in attack, while France lacked the same rhythm they had in the first half

Roberto Cordoba produced Costa Rica’s first real threat to the France goal soon after the break but goalkeeper Luca Zidane was equal to the task.

Cordoba then teed up Andy Rees but the striker’s header came back off the bar in what proved the closest opportunity of the match.

France captain Timothe Cognat was the unfortunate victim in the shoot-out, where his lone miss proved enough for Costa Rica to advance.

Match Highlights, France v Croatia

Quotes

"We created many chances today but didn’t score any goal throughout the 90 minutes. Costa Rica played an organised defence and made things tough on us, especially in the second half. We missed the finishing touch as we did in the previous games. We were expecting to win, but Costa Rica played a fighting spirit and they was lucky in the end. Jean-Claude Giuntini, France coach

“We are happy today for this great victory, the game was tough and France has good players. We've made them run a lot. I think that luck was our ally in the penalty shoot-out. The Belgium match will also be difficult but we are confident of ourselves and we will provide the same performance.”
Marcelo Herrera, Costa Rica coach

This penalty experience was quite a different experience for Zidane, from the one he experienced during the U17 Euros.

Just saw a boss game between Mali and Croatia. Excellent, excellent. Both teams looked like Barca junior. Koita, Traore, for Mali and Loveren for Croatia were outstanding.Loveren is the younger brother of the Liverpool player. Game ended 1-0 in Mali's favor.

Quarter-finals

Golden Eaglets soar into semi
FIFA.com

Holders Nigeria cruised into the FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-finals after stunning Brazil with three goals in five first half minutes in a 3-0 victory. Victor Osimhen, with his eighth goal in five games, Kingsley Michael and Udochukwu Anumudu battered Brazil, and the Golden Eaglets played the rest of the game out at a canter to reach the final four.

Brazil had looked bright in the opening stages, either finding Akpan Udoh in fine form in the Nigerian net or hitting their opportunities off target, with Rogerio and Evander two of the culprits. A Seleção were made to rue those missed opportunities when the lethal Osimhen extended his lead at the top of the goalscoring charts. John Lazarus crossed from the Nigerian right and the Nigerian No9 headed in, via a deflection off Eder Militao.

Moments later, Nigeria doubled their lead, Osimhen instrumental once more. The forward hooked a bouncing ball back over his shoulder, with Michael following in. The ball bounced up off the turf and past Juliano. The Brazilian No1 was deceived by another bounce just four minutes later, as Anumudu hit a left-footed drive from distance. The effort skipped off the turf, and past the stopper, who was visibly unhappy at not keeping the shot out.

The second period saw few clear-cut opportunities, with Funsho Bamgboye and Evander going closest for either side but, in truth, it was a mere procession for the holders to take a step closer to retaining their title. They will head to Concepcion for Thursday's semi-final against the winner of tomorrow's quarter-final between Ecuador and Mexico.

Quotes

"We knew it was important for us to make the most of our opportunities, especially if we dominated the game at some point, but we didn't. Their goals were scored in only five minutes because of specific chances, not because we were not balanced. We would like to have put Nigeria behind on the scoreboard, but we failed to score. For these kids, everything that has happened here is part of their learning process," Carlos Amadeu, Brazil coach.

"Is not like we scored three goals and that was it. Before that our side had 15 very good minutes, when they moved the ball around as we knew they could. You have to give credit to my kids, who were tranquil and kept their cool to deal with the Brazil pressure and then scored at the right time. For them, to beat Brazil is a big confidence boost. We still have a long way to the title, though," Emmanuel Amuneke, Nigeria coach.

Quarter-finals

Miserly Malians make history
FIFA.com

Mali reached their first FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-final and continued their impressive defensive record in Chile with a 1-0 win over Croatia. Sekou Koita's first half effort was enough to see off the European side and send Dario Basic's side home.

The opening half saw the African side take the initiative, with Amadou Haidara going close from distance first from open play and then from a set-piece, but Croatian stopper Adrian Semper equal to both efforts.

Koita showed Haidara how to finish clinically. Sidiki Maiga expertly hooked a long crossfield ball back behind him as he sprinted towards the Croatian touchline. The 15-year-old forward followed up and hit a low shot left-footed into the bottom right-hand corner across Semper.

The second half was bereft of clear-cut chances, with the Croatians failing to carve out any meaningful opportunities. The Malian defence, marshalled well by Abdoul Dante despite his early booking ruling him out of the historic semi-final, dealt with every attack the Europeans threw at them. Semper was called upon in the Croatian goal a handful of times, with Boubacar Traore kept out courtesy of a smart save, while Aly Malle and Koita were foiled by the Dinamo Zagreb stopper.

Mali held firm, and will head to La Serena for a final four showdown against either Belgium or Costa Rica, who face off in Concepcion tomorrow.

Quotes

“In the first half we did not play as we should have played against a team like Mali. In the second half we could play our style of quick passes, but we didn’t show the level of the previous matches and we did not deserve to win today. We have made big strides. We are a small country but could reach this stage and had a good tournament. Anyway, I’m really sad, because I sincerely think that we lost a big opportunity. My feeling here, especially after beating Nigeria and Germany was that we could go the whole way. Maybe not winning, but staying until the end," Dario Basic, Croatia coach.

“It was a great match, Croatia are a really tough side and very good tactically, so my players finished the match exhausted. Thanks to the goal we scored we could win and go to the semi-final. We have reached the semi-final, that’s not an opportunity given to everyone and this is the result of our hard work during the last few years. Our first goal was reaching the semi-finals but the main objective is winning the tournament. People in Mali are very passionate about football we need to win the trophy for them,"Baye Ba, Mali coach

Quarter-finals

Mexico setup Nigeria showdown
FIFA

Mexico set up a mouthwatering FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-final showdown against Nigeria after eliminating Ecuador with a 2-0 win in Coquimbo. Claudio Zamudio's first half strike and Bryan Salazar's penalty after the break saw off the South Americans, who fail to go one better than their only previous quarter-final appearance at this level in 1995.

The Mexicans were swift out of the blocks, controlling the ball well and attacking Ecuador dangerously in the opening moments. Most notably Eduardo Aguirre came within inches of opening the scoring within the first minute after a cross-shot flashed wide.

Ecuador began to grow in stature, though with the electric Jhon Pereira breaking free of the Mexican defence before hitting a toe-punt shot which Abraham Romero got down to turn round the post.

It was the two-time U-17 World Cup champions who took the lead though, with Zamudio slotting home from inside the penalty area after Salazar nodded down a deep free-kick.

El Tri doubled their advantage just after the interval when No20 fouled No20 in the Ecuadorian penalty area. Jean Pena brought down Mexican substitute Jose Gurrola, and Salazar stepped up to slot past Jose Cevallos in the Ecuador goal.

The remainder of the game saw Mexico retain the ball for long spells, rarely troubled by the Ecuador attack. Mario Arteaga's side head to Concepcion for their final four clash against the four-time champions - a truly remarkable game in prospect.

Match Highlights

Quotes

"Our goal here was to reach the final, but luck was not on our side. We had chances but we made mistakes on the finish. We also made mistakes on Mexico's goals, which were scored after fouls we made. We learned a lot today, we're the only ones to blame."
Jose Rodriguez, Ecuador coach.

"The match went as we expected, very tight between two teams with the same level. But my team has managed to stay very calm and very well composed this game with impeccable behavior. My players were good tactically, physically and mentally. Nigeria is a very good team, and we will prepare ourselves better to face their excellent attack."
Mario Arteaga, Mexico coach

Belgium battle their way into history books
FIFA

Belgium reached their first FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-final after a thrilling 1-0 victory against Costa Rica in Concepcion. Dante Rigo's stunning first half free-kick saw off the Central Americans, and set up a last four clash with Mali in La Serena on Thursday.

The European side were first on the attack. A corner whipped in from the Belgian left saw Daniel Villegas attempt to clear but the defender could only deflect onto the crossbar. Bob Broeways' side then went close once more, with a long ball from the Belgian right finding Jorn Vancamp in behind the Costa Rican defence. Alejandro Barrientos thought about coming to claim, but retreated and the goalkeeper was lucky that Villegas was there to save his blushes by stopping the ball from crossing the line.

Costa Rica responded in kind, forcing Jens Teunckens into a stunning double save. Ian Smith overlapped down the Costa Rican right and crossed to find his captain Luis Hernandez arriving at the back post. His volleyed effort was stopped by Teunckens, who also saved the No6's follow up. Martinez then hit a follow up of his own which was blocked by Wout Faes and collected by Teunckens.

The Red Devils then went ahead thanks to a moment of technical excellence from Rigo. Steve Ryckaert stepped over the ball and the No8 curled an unstoppable set-piece past the despairing Barrientos.

Belgium then took control of the remainder of the opening period, despite Costa Rica looking dangerous on the counter attack.

After the break, Broeways introduced Dante Vanzeir, who had an immediate impact. He received a fantastic throw by Teunckens after the goalkeeper collected a Costa Rica corner and outpaced the Ticos defence, sprinting more than half the length of the pitch to find himself in the penalty area. With team-mates waiting in the middle, his cross was cleared behind for a corner.

Costa Rica went closest to levelling late on. A long ball was deflected into the box and Teunckens could only palm the looping ball onto the post which deflected back into the penalty area. Pablo Arboine fired wide with the goal gaping. Teunckens then showed remarkable reflexes to claw out a deflected Arboine free-kick.

Belgium meet Mali in the semi-final, with both sides renewing their rivalry from Group D and each hoping to continue writing new chapters of footballing history with an inaugural U-17 World Cup final berth the prize on offer.

Match Highlights

Quotes

“It was a tough match against a strong opponent but this is normal in a World Cup quarter-final. The free-kick of Dante Rigo was fantastic. He had bad luck in the previous matches where he hit the post or the goalkeeper saved the ball. After our lead it was a different game. Both teams had some chances, especially us with counter attacks. Furthermore we defended quite well. We are not a favourite for the title. Nigeria and Mexico are as they are very often in the semi-final at this age. Mali have impressed and are also a favourite. It is only our second U-17 World Cup. It is a game between David and Goliath. Our first match was against Mali. It was 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Mali created many chances. We will prepare as well as possible and we will try to find solutions to stop Mali.”
Bob Browaeys, Belgium coach

“I’m sad and proud. The players gave their best. Congratulations to Belgium, and thanks to Chile and the people here in Conception for their hospitality. It is a process where we go through. This is the beginning and not the end. I believe in this team.”
Marcelo Herrera, Costa Rica coach

Mali march on to Vina Del Mar
FIFA.com

Mali 3-1 Belgium

Mali reached their first ever FIFA U-17 World Cup final courtesy of a resounding come-from-behind 3-1 victory against Belgium. The Europeans had taken the lead through Dante Rigo, but Boubacar Traore's swift response was followed by second half goals from Sidiki Maiga and Sekou Koita.

Belgium took the lead thanks to a sumptuous through ball by Jorn Vancamp. The No19 found space inbetween the Malian midfield and defence and lofted a pass with the outside of his right foot to the onrushing Rigo. The midfielder showed great composure to finish for his second goal in two games, and end Mali's run of over 300 minutes without conceding at Chile 2015.

The Malians struck back swiftly. Aly Malle matched Vancamp's assist with a delicious cross of his own with the outside of his left foot. The ball missed everyone but Traore followed in, lashing home from inside the penalty area.

The remainder of the first half saw the two sides exchange attacks, and it was clear for all to see that these teams knew each other inside out, after their meeting in their opening Group D fixture.

There was an element of fortune to the goal that gave the Africans' the advantage after the break. A long clearance pumped upfield by the Malian defence was misread by Teunckens, the bounce deceiving the Belgian 'keeper. Maiga nipped in to nod home with the Club Brugge stopper stranded.

The win was rubberstamped in the closing stages as Koita, the youngest player on either side, showed composure beyond his years. He received the ball in the Belgian penalty area on the right-hand side and slammed a finish across Teunckens into the far corner.

Mali's historic victory means they will face the victor of the second semi-final between Mexico and Nigeria on Sunday, with Belgium facing the defeated side in the play-off for third place earlier the same day in Vina Del Mar.

Match Highlights

Quotes

"We faced a very good team that has tired us. We conceded a quick opening goal, and we had to react quickly. It was very hard tactically and we ran a lot to get the win. We had a bad start in this game, which does not happen often to my players despite their young age. For the final, I do not care if it's Mexico or Nigeria. I just want to face a team that we can beat," Baye Ba, Mali coach.

"I want to congratulate Mali for this victory. This is a very good team and I wish them all the best for the final. Belgium played a very good game and I am proud of my boys. We started the match well and the first half was balanced. What happened in the second half happens in football. I am very pleased with the progress of my players for this tournament," Bob Browaeys, Belgium coach.

Nigeria edge thriller to set up all-African final
FIFA.com

Mexico 2-4 Nigeria

Holders Nigeria have reached their second consecutive final thanks to a thrilling 4-2 victory against Mexico in Concepcion.

Mexico opened the scoring through Kevin Magana, with stunning efforts from Kelechi Nwakali and Orji Okwonkwo seeing the African side ahead. Diego Cortes's remarkable solo effort levelled matters, before Osinachi Ebere and Victor Osimhen's late record-equalling penalty saw the Golden Eaglets into an all-African final against Mali.

Mexico controlled the ball in the opening stages of the match, and took the lead early on. Kevin Lara beat his man on the Mexican right and delivered a teasing cross into the middle. Aguirre tried to control with his chest, but Magana took charge and fired home.

Emmanuel Amuneke's side began to grow into the game, with Kelechi Nwakali hitting a low drive from the edge of the Mexican penalty area with his venomous drive stinging the palms of Romero before the ball was cleared away.

The game see-sawed back Mexico's way, with a free-kick from the Mexican left headed goalwards by Jose Esquivel. The chance forced a superb point blank stop by Akpan Udoh, onto the crossbar and eventually cleared behind.

Nigeria rode their luck, with a couple of good Mexican opportunities and after riding the storm, managed to level things up thanks to the superb technique of their captain. Nwakali lined up a free-kick from around 25 yards, and curled a perfect effort into the bottom left-hand corner. Romero stood no chance.

Amuneke's charges sensed their opponents were on the back foot, and Okwonkwo took advantage, producing one of the moments of the tournament to see his side ahead. He cut inside from the left onto his right foot and thumped an effort in off the crossbar.

After the break, Mexico took time to reassert their rhythm after the shock of going behind. Cortes then stepped up to score what must be considered one of the best goals ever scored in the Estadio Ester Roa. He picked up the ball on the Mexican right just inside the Nigerian half and proceeded to dribble past five players, showing incredible close control before slotting calmly past Udoh.

Nigeria were undeterred by Cortes's golazo and struck back. Ebere found space on the Nigerian right just inside the Mexican penalty area after a long through ball. His right-footed effort was too strong for Romero, who got a hand to the strike but could not keep it out.

John Lazarus was taken down in the Mexican penalty area, giving Osimhen the chance to score his ninth goal of Chile 2015 and go level at the top of the all-time U-17 World Cup goalscoring charts. He slotted home with ease, adding gloss to the Golden Eaglets victory.

Nigeria head to Vina Del Mar on Sunday for an all-African final against continental champions Mali while Mexico will face off against Belgium in the match for third place earlier the same day.

Quotes

"We know that it would be a tough game, the toughest game in this World Cup. Both teams had chances. Unfortunately we didn’t score, Nigeria did. This was the difference. But that is football. After our equaliser we thought we controlled the game but then Nigeria scored surprisingly. We wanted to reach the final but we failed. Of course the team is sad but we have to focus now on the third place match,"
Mario Arteaga, Mexico coach

"It was a difficult match in which both teams did their best. We give credit to Mexico because of their performance and its level of play. We are happy to be in the final and have the chance to defend the world title. Mali is a good team, Africa's champion. This is going to be an interesting challenge,"
Emmanuel Amuneke, Nigeria coach

4-2. Osimhen penalty. He came into the WC valued at under 250K euros. Watch de ride.

Historic spot-kick
By scoring the penalty that extended Nigeria’s lead over Mexico to 4-2, striker Victor Osimhen took his goal tally for the tournament to nine, equalling the joint all-time record held by Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly (2011) and Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle (2001). Few would bet against the African goal machine adding another in the final.

Nigeria edge thriller to set up all-African final

Mexico 2-4 Nigeria

Holders Nigeria have reached their second consecutive final thanks to a thrilling 4-2 victory against Mexico in Concepcion.

...

Stunning stat
Eight out of eight! That is Nigeria’s remarkable new record in U-17 World Cup semi-finals following their victory over El Tri at Chile 2015. In doing so, they also brought their opponents’ run of three previous semi-final triumphs (in three attempts) to an abrupt halt.

A very tentative 3rd place match is in progress. Good goalkeeping and a lack of conviction in executing on chances have made the difference.

Nil nil at the half. I expect things to ratchet up during the second half.

@ 58' game is now 1-1.

Belgium drew first blood courtesy individual work on the flank, penetration from dribbling and the eventual goalscorer's intelligence to stay onside.

Minutes later Mexico was gifted a penalty following the BEL skipper's handling of the ball. Lots of maturity demonstrated by the penalty taker. Was very patient in executing.

Game on.

BEL skipper receives an arguably soft 2nd yellow. Mexico secures a free kick in a dangerous area. Kick amounts to nothing productive for Mexico. Off the counter, 10-man BEL scores. 2-1 @77'.

The drama has heightened as the emotion in the match builds.

Plenty worries in CONCACAF for years to come. Under pressure, Mexico absorb the pressure to equalize. 2-2.

BUT, as I post, BEL stretch the field to set up a 1v1 in the penalty area. 3-2 Brussels. Mexico will be returning to Benito Juarez International in tears.

If Mali v Nigeria tops this second half, all of Africa will be bawling.

Belgium leave it late to seal third
FIFA.com

Ten man Belgium finished third at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 after a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Mexico in Vina del Mar. Dennis Van Vaerenbergh opened the scoring for the Belgians before a Ricardo Marin penalty levelled matters moments later with Dante Vanzeir's wonderful chip cancelled out by Francisco Venegas's late leveller. Vanzeir then kept his cool in stoppage time to seal third place.

There were two clear-cut opportunities in the opening exchanges of the game, first with Belgium and then Mexico failing to capitalise. Vanzeir burst clear of the Mexican defence, after a slip by Francisco Venegas, but he sliced his effort wide. Claudio Zamudio then found himself in space behind the Belgian defence, but Gaetan Coucke, making his first appearance of the finals, saved well with his feet.

Van Vaerenbergh and the ever-dangerous Pablo Lopez each went close, but neither side could break the deadlock in a tight opening period.

The European side were first to strike, with Vanzeir once more showing his pace and trickery down the Belgian right wing. The Genk player picked up the ball close to the halfway line and took on a number of Mexican defenders before forcing his way into the penalty area. He found Van Vaerenbergh in space inside the six yard box and the tall No9 made no mistake, slotting home for his first of the tournament.

Mexico were given an opportunity to level moments later. Kevin Lara cut inside from the Mexican right and hit a left-footed effort at goal which was blocked by Wout Faes' hand. Substitute Marin stepped up and calmly sent Coucke the wrong way for his first goal of Chile 2015.

Captain Faes then found himself taking an early bath, after he picked up a second yellow following the booking received for the handball which led to the penalty. That did not hinder the Belgians, who almost immediately took the lead. Christophe Janssens broke out of defence and his pass inside found its way to Van Vaerenbergh. The forward spread the play to Vanzeir who settled himself with a good first touch before dinking a beautifully disguised chip over the onrushing Abraham Romero.

Venegas levelled matters late on after Marin poked his way following a scramble in the Belgian penalty area. But Vanzeir had the last word, sealing the win with another superb individual effort. The winger found himself one-on-one with Romero once more and kept his cool to slot home the dramatic winner and seal third place for the Red Devils. They will look back fondly on their time in Chile, the first time they have reached the knockout stages of the U-17 World Cup.

Match Highlights

Quotes

"It was a hard and sometimes difficult match. We equalised twice but in the end we finished empty handed. Our goal in Chile was to win the championship and of course we're not happy with the fourth place but that is football. After the semi-final the disappointment was big but today we wanted to win the medal. Overall we played a great first round but then two matches robbed us the chance to be in the top three. For this team a long process ends today but they will play in the next age group. Thanks to the people who loved us here. Thanks for everything," Mario Arteaga, Mexico coach.

"Of course, you always need a bit of luck. We played a good first half, overall it was a nice match. Mexico is a great team. After the red card we had to change the tactics. Mexico pushed but I think they forgot my No7, Dante Vanzeir. He is very good at counter attacks. The red card was not good but in the end it helped us. Congratulations to my players. They are a fantastic group and I’m very proud. This is unique. At the 1986 World Cup and at the Olympics, Belgium reached the fourth place. And now it is for the first time a bronze medal. Thanks to Chile and the organisers. It is an amazing moment for us," Bob Browaeys, Belgium coach.

Nigeria: two goals in three minutes. Both ... especially the first ... exemplars of textbook finishing. Both let a lil air out of Mali's tires after the Malians had shown much to suggest they would net first. 2-0 with about 25' left in regulation.

One Chilean youth buss de security perimeter to beg the Nigerians for a jersey. Police corral de boy and the Nigerian baller decide to give away de jersey to defuse the situation. So he runs behind de security personnel that were dragging de boy away ... actually gives the boy de jersey, but then one of the Nigerian staffers runs after the player and tells him something: de player runs back to de yute and takes back de jersey.  :rotfl: Yuh think it easy?!

Once that first yute storm de field, plenty other yutes rush the Nigerians. Momentary chaos.

Look Sunil G. handing out trophy! Lately Sunil in everything!!!

Kudos to Chileans for embracing the final and turning out in numbers. More spectators in attendance here than at the U20 final.

Golden Eaglets retain their crown
FIFA.com

Nigeria became only the second side to retain the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 2-0 win against Mali in Vina Del Mar. Victor Osimhen stole the show once again thanks to his record-breaking tenth goal of the tournament, with Funsho Bamgboye adding a second moments later. Samuel Diarra had saved an early Osinachi Ebere penalty as the Malians played their part in an entertaining finale to Chile 2015.

The penalty came as both sides were just finding their rhythm in the opening exchanges, Chato the culprit with a handball. Ebere saw his low effort saved brilliantly by Diarra, the No17's follow up header hit the bar before a third bite of the cherry was blocked by the Malian defence.

Both sides had chances in a tense opening period, with Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali hitting just wide and Boubacar Traore seeing his glancing header tipped over by Akpan Udoh.

The second half saw the game burst into life, with Emmanuel Amuneke's words clearly working their magic on the Nigerian youngsters. Osimhen shrugged off the challenge of Mamadou Fofana before hitting a wonderful dipping half volley towards goal, which Diarra spectacularly saved. Udochukwu Anumudu then smashed a thunderous effort at goal, which rebounded back off the crossbar and was cleared away.

Mali did not heed those warnings. Good approach play by substitute Chinedu Madueke saw him tee up Osimhen for his record-breaking goal, seeing him surpass the nine goals scored by Florent Sinama Pongolle in 2001 and Souleymane Coulibaly ten years later.

The holders doubled their advantage mere minutes later, with Bamgboye bursting down the Nigerian left before smashing a powerful effort at goal, Diarra standing little chance.

Despite a couple of late chances for Mali, from corner kicks, Nigeria retained possession for large spells and saw the game out to retain their crown. The jubilant scenes on the final whistle in Vina Del Mar will surely live long in the memories of these Nigerian heroes of the present, some of whom may just become the stars of the future.

Quotes

"It was a tough match. Nigeria was well-placed and we often acted very unorganised. We didn’t pay attention twice and conceded two goals. It is how it is. One team wins because the other team makes mistakes. It is the first time Mali reached the final. If you believe that you can win a game, then you are sad when you lose. Nevertheless we can be very proud. Not many teams reach the second place. Our goal is to have a senior team who can win. We will continue our work. Everything is installed in our youth programs so that we will reach another final in the future.“ Baye Ba, Mali coach.

"It was a beautiful and entertaining match. I think the people in the stadium enjoyed it today. We knew that Mali are technically very strong, have great individual players and are very fast. We wanted to make no mistakes but we lost the ball many times in the midfield in the first half. But I don’t want to complain because they are all kids. We changed some things in the second half and made some substitutes. That brought us more safety in our game. We are thankful for everything. We wanted to bring the players to their dreams and we did it. Thanks for the support. We feel like we are at home. We have worked very hard for this success and we hope to continue. The players will go home now but their journey is not over yet. Personally I’m really happy. I have football in my blood, as a player and as a coach. This is what I want to pass to my players.“ Emmanuel Amuneke, Nigeria coach.
