UTT and NBFTT sign MOU
« on: April 02, 2015, 07:53:58 PM »
ASPIRING YOUNG basketball players can expect be among the first to benefit from a collaboration between the National Basketball Federation (NBFTT) and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) that will allow for the university’s facilities and expertise to assist in the short and long-term development of the game in the country. Those ideas were formalised by the signing yesterday of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the UTT’s Chaguanas Campus.

“Home-grown, but world-known,” was how Minister Karim described his view of UTT’s future, revealing it was only the first of eight such MOUs he expects to be penning in the next few months. He listed the sports of Tennis, Netball, Cycling and Swimming among the likely National Sporting Organisations that would be agreeing on similar collaborations. Noting that it is now an accredited institution, the minister speculated on the possibility of UTT organising visits by US College Basketball teams, in order to expose local players to higher levels of competition and raise interest in the sport locally.

Excited at the prospect, Garvin Warwick, president of the NBFTT revealed that the most immediate task involving the UTT will be the conduct of nationwide screening for the national Under-14 and Under-16 squads, in preparation for the regional Junior Championships. The event is to be staged in Puerto Rico later this year, but the dates have not been set. With his executive now one year into office, Warwick also indicated the federation’s intent to “return to zonal basketball in all nine zones.”

Aside from identifying talent, the UTT’s facilities will also be used in the training and preparation of teams, with the help of the university’s technical staff; the man who heads the UTT Basketball programme is the widely-experienced former national coach, Joseph “Lenny” Guy. Looking even further ahead, it is expected that the UTT will also help in the training and development of coaches, as well as the development of opportunities for Basketball scholarships abroad.

The UTT currently has some 110 student/athletes from ten sporting disciplines enrolled in its Academy of Sport.
