KHALIFA ST FORT collected Trinidad and Tobago’s first gold medal in the 2015 Pan American Track and Field Championships at Foote Field, Edmonton, Canada on Friday evening.

The 17-year-old American-born sprinter, who is coached by quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon, sped to victory in the women’s 100-metre finals in a time of 11.31 seconds.

The United States pair of Aleia Hobbs and Teahna Daniels were the other medallists in the women’s 100m, in 11.50 and 11.54 respectively.

Rounding off the field were Jonielle Smith of Jamaica (11.56), Vitoria Rosa of Brazil (11.58), Tristan Evelyn of Barbados (11.65), Sashalee Forbes of Jamaica (11.73) and Leya Buchanan of Canada (11.92).

PORTIOUS WARREN with her Pan Am Junior Championships silver medal.

Portious Warren was another TT medallist on Friday, as she got silver in the women’s shot put. Warren, with her second throw, had a distance of 15.57 metres, but she was no where close to Raven Saunders of the United States who, also with her second throw, had a title- winning distance of 18.27m.

Sophia Rivera, another American, got bronze with 15.34m, followed by Sarah Mitton of Canada (14.57m) and TT’s Chelsea James (14.24m).

JEMINISE PARRIS 4th in 100m hurdles women junior final in 13:98 at Pan Am Jnrs 2015

Also on Friday, Jeminise Parris failed in her bid to earn a podium finish, having placed fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

Parris crossed the finish line in 13.98 seconds, trailing Dior Hall of the United States (13.20), Maribel Caicedo of Ecuador (13.45) and Daeshon Gordon of Jamaica (13.70).

Other entrants in the final were Alexandra Aitkin of Canada (13.99), Jacklyn Howell of the United States (14.04), Marin Clara of Chile (14.10) and Yanique Thompson of Jamaica (14.11).

ANDWUELLE WRIGHT 5th with leap of 7.51m in Men's long jump at Pan Am Jnrs.

Trinidad and Tobago had two participants in the men’s long jump - Andwuelle Wright and Che Richards, but neither earned a medal in the event. Wright was fifth with a best effort of 7.51 metres, while Richards was 11th with a best of 7.08m.

Claiming gold was Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba with 7.76 metres, followed by Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas (7.65m), and the United States duo of Keandre Bates (7.54m) and Nathaniel Moore (7.53m).

Yesterday, Aaron Lewis was seeking Trinidad and Tobago’s third medal, in the men’s 110m hurdles.

Lewis finished fourth in heat one of the preliminary round with a time of 13.92, trailing Seanie Selvin of Jamaica (13.71), Marquis Morris of the United States (13.76) and Ricardo Torres of Puerto Rico (13.83).

The top three finishers, in the two preliminary round heats, progressed to the final, as well as the next two fastest times. Lewis’ time was the eighth fastest overall.

The Pan Am Junior Championships will conclude today.

Khalifa St Fort bolted to gold in the women's 100 metres dash at the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Canada, on Friday night.

St Fort seized early control of the race, and was never threatened. The 17-year-old Trinidad and Tobago sprinter crossed the line in 11.31 seconds, well ahead of Aleia Hobbs, the silver medallist in 11.50. Hobbs' United States teammate, Teahna Daniels clocked 11.54 to pick up bronze.

Thanks to her superb front-running effort, St Fort became only the second T&T athlete to capture Pan American Junior Championship women's 100m gold, following in the strides of 2011 champion Michelle-Lee Ahye.

Rhonda Watkins is the only other female athlete from T&T to strike gold at the hemispheric under-20 meet. Watkins won the high jump title back in 2005.

“The start was great,” said St Fort, following Friday's golden run. “Everyone told me that I resembled Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, which is wonderful.” The 2015 IAAF World Youth Championship 100m silver medallist was beaming with national pride. “I was happy I was able to make Trinidad and Tobago proud and bring home a gold for them.”

T&T also earned silver on Friday night, Portious Warren throwing the iron ball a personal best 15.57 metres for the runner-up spot in the women's shot put. American Raven Saunders was the class of the field, claiming gold with a massive championship record throw of 18.27m. Another American, Sophia Rivera produced a 15.34m effort to bag bronze.

The other T&T athlete in the field, Chelsea James threw 14.24m to finish fifth. Jeminise Parris was fourth in the women's 100m hurdles final, the T&T athlete getting home in 13.98 seconds. American Dior Hall won in 13.20, from Ecuador's Maribel Caicedo (13.45) and Jamaican Daeshon Gordon (13.70).

In the qualifying round, Parris clocked 13.84 seconds to finish fourth in heat two, progressing to the final as a “fastest loser”.

T&T's Andwuelle Wright fought hard in the men's long jump, disturbing the sand at 7.51m to secure fifth spot. Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarria emerged victorious with a 7.76m leap, forcing Bahamian Laquan Nairn to settle for silver at 7.65m. KeAndre Bates of the United States jumped 7.54m to secure bronze for his country.

Che Richards also represented T&T in the men's long jump. He finished 11th with a 7.08m jump.

After press time, last night, Aaron Lewis competed in the men's 110m hurdles final. Earlier yesterday, the T&T hurdler was fourth in heat one in 13.92 seconds, booking a lane in the final as a “fastest loser”.

Kayelle Clarke, however, was a non-finisher in her women's 200m qualifying heat. Today, Kenejah Williams throws in the men's shot put, Omari Benoit competes in the men's high jump, and the men's and women's 4x100m teams battle for precious metal.

Lewis 5th at Pan Am Juniors
Published on Aug 2, 2015, 9:09 pm AST (T&T Express)

Congratulations to Aaron Lewis on making it into the finals of the Men's 110m Hurdles at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton Canada, where he went on to run a Personal Best of 13.69 and finished 5th overall.

Aaron Lewis bettered his best at the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships, in Edmonton, Canada, on Saturday night. Lewis got to the line in 13.69 seconds for fifth spot in the men’s 110 metres hurdles final. The clocking was 11-hundredths of a second faster than his previous PR (personal record), 13.80.

Misana Viltz was golden on Saturday, the American getting home in 13.30 seconds. Cuban Roger Iribarne clocked 13.32 to pick up silver, ahead of Puerto Rico’s Ricardo Torres (13.49).

Lewis was very pleased with his performance in the Pan Am Juniors championship race.

“All thanks and praise to the almighty father above,” Lewis posted on Facebook, “for blessing me with a great season. Despite a few minor setbacks throughout the 2015 season I’m most grateful and thankful. Finished my 2015 season on a high note, fifth fastest 110m hurdler in the Pan Am region, highest ever international finish to date. On to the next. 2016 is going to be even better.”

After press time, last night, Kenejah Williams, Omari Benoit and the T&T men’s and women’s sprint relay teams were in action. Williams competed in the men’s shot put. John Maurins of the United States was the favourite for gold.

Benoit was among the athletes in the men’s high jump. American Randall Cunningham was tipped for top honours. And newly-crowned 100m champion Khalifa St Fort was expected to anchor the women’s 4x100m team.

Khalifa St Forte won the Women’s 100m final at the Pan American Junior Games in Edmonton, Canada on Friday evening. The American-born athlete, who is coached by Ato Boldon, clocked 11.31 to edge American Aleiba Hobbs (11.50) and Teahna Daniels (11.54) into second and third respectively.

The 17-year-old had set a new national Under 18 record (11.19) two weeks ago when she won silver at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia. Her achievement came on the eve of the 19th anniversary of her coach’s 200m bronze medal run at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

In other events, Portious Warren won the silver in the Women’s Shot Put after throwing a personal best of 15.57m in her second attempt. The gold was won by Raven Saunders of the USA, who smashed the old meet record (17.55m) with 18.27m on her second throw. She also bettered the mark on her third (17.63m) and sixth (17.60m) attempts.

Meanwhile, Jeminise Parris  was fourth in the Women’s 100m Hurdles  final, coming in at 13.98. American Dior Hall won the gold in 13.20 with Ecuador’s Maribel Caicedo (13.45) and Jamaican Daeshon Gordon (13.70) winning silver and bronze respectively.

Andwuelle Wright was fifth in the Men’s Long Jump with a 7.51m effort in his fourth attempt. His teammate Che Richards was 11th with 7.08m. Topping the field was Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarria with 7.76m, followed by Bahaman Laquan Nairn (7.65m) and American Keandre Bates (7.54m). Aaron Lewis just qualified for the Men’s 110m Hurdles final when he finished fourth in his heat in a time of 13.92. Ahead of him were Jamaica Seanie Selvin (13.71), American Marquis Morris (13.76) and Puerto Rican Richard Torres (13.83). The final was scheduled for last night.

Kayelle Clarke did not finish her Women’s 200m heat, which was won by Bajan Sada Williams in 23.46. The National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) of T&T has extend its congratulations to both medallist winners St Fort and Warren.

Today's action will see Kenejah Williams in the Men's Shot Put and Omari Benoit in the Men's High Jump. The Women's 4x100m relay team of St Forte, Jendayi Noel, Kayelle Clarke and Jael Fergusson will enter the final while Joash Huggins, Corey Stewart, Francis Louis and Nathan Farinha will take part in the Men's 4x100m final.

Thanks to all, and special thanks to the Guardian, which continues to not be able to spell Khalifa's last name.

Also, "edge" to a win by .19 of a second happens in NO SPORT, ever. Very professional.

Keep it up.

Good point Ato.
It's a pity the Guardian did not put the writer's name to the article so we can directly call them out.
These sports journalists in T&T generally need to take a little more time to research their articles and to get athletes names correct before publishing them as it only makes them look very unprofessional and totally lacking in knowledge of the sport they are writing about.

I think T&T finished third and won bronze in the boys 4x100 relay clocking (40.52). This means T&T end the Championships with One Gold, One Siler and One Bronze.  Average performance given the talent we send there this year.

T&T ANCHOR: Nathan Farinha

Nathan Farinha anchored Trinidad and Tobago to bronze in the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championship men's 4x100 metres relay, in Edmonton, Canada, on Sunday night.

Francis Louis, Joash Huggins, Corey Stewart and Farinha combined for a 40.50 seconds clocking. Jamaica produced a 40.15 run to grab gold, while silver was seized by Bahamas in 40.32.

Corey Stewart & Nathan Farinha celebrate 4x100m relay bronze at Pan Am Jnrs 2015

The sprint relay bronze, on the third and final day of the hemispheric Under-20 meet, carried the country's medal tally to three--one gold, one silver, one bronze. Khalifa St Fort earned gold in the women's 100m, while Portious Warren picked up silver in the women's shot put.

On Sunday, Jael Fergusson, Jeminise Parris, Jendayi Noel and St Fort on anchor teamed up for fourth spot in the women's 4x100m relay. The T&T quartet got home in 47.11 seconds. United States won in 43.79, from Jamaica (44.31) and Bahamas (45.96).

T&T's Omari Benoit cleared the bar at 1.90 metres for 10th spot in the men's high jump. Both the gold medallist, American Randall Cunningham, and silver medallist, Cuban Luis Zayas went over at 2.16m. Jamaican Clayton Brown bagged bronze with a 2.13m clearance.

Another T&T athlete, Kenejah Williams finished 10th in the men's shot put. He threw the iron ball 16.45m. United States swept the top two spots, John Maurins getting gold with a 19.49m effort and Ayomidotun Ogundeji claiming silver at 19.20m. Bronze went to Jamaican Demar Gayle (18.56m).

Pan Am junior athletes disappoint Serrette

Someone needs to tell the writer Nicholas Clarke how to spell Khalifa's surname correctly. It is even written on the athlete ID she is wearing in the photo they used for the article.  :-[

Pan Am junior athletes disappoint Serrette
By Nicholas Clarke (T&T Guardian)
Published: Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Khalifa St Forte....Women's 100m champion

President of the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) Ephraim Serrette said he was disappointed with T&T's showing at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada over the weekend. The team won three medals at the meet, including gold for Khalifa St Forte in the Women's 100m, silver for Portious Warren in the Women’s Shot Put and bronze for the Men's 4x100m team of Francis Louis, Joash Huggins, Corey Stewart and Nathan Farinha.

The haul was less than the two golds and three silvers the country picked up during its last appearance at the championships in Miramar, Florida, USA in 2011. Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, Serrette felt the athletes were capable of better.

“The overall performance was mediocre. We had greater expectations from the team,” he said. “It was hindered by the absence of Akanni Hislop, Jonathan Farinha and Joshua St Clair, who were injured but you would hope for athletes to step up their performances when competing internationally. In some cases, they did worse than they did at the National Championships.”

Serrette did credit the medal winners for for their efforts. “The Men's 4x100m relay team did well to win bronze though I felt the female relay team should have medalled as well. Khalifa St Forte continues to prove she is one for future and I was very satisfied by Portious Warren throwing a personal best to win silver.”

T&T's 4x100m quartet of Louis, Huggins, Stewart and Farinha closed the meet on Sunday night with a bronze in its final. The foursome clocked 40.50 to finish behind Jamaica's Seanie Selvin, Shivnarine Smalling, Hujaye Cornwall and Xandre Blake, who took gold in 40.15, while Bahamas's Javan Martin, Janeko Cartwright, Ian Kerr and Kendrick Thompson were runners up in 40.32.

T&T's female 4x100m team narrowly missed out on a spot on the podium when it finished fourth in its final. Jael Fergusson, Jeminise Parris, Jendayi Noel and Khalifa St Forte put together a time of 47.11, which was behind USA (43.79), Jamaica (44.31) and Bahamas (45.96). In other events, Omari Benoit was tenth in the Men’s High Jump after being eliminated at the 1.95 mark. American Randall Cunningham won the event in 2.16m.

Keneja Williams also managed tenth in his event, the Men's Shot Put, with a throw of 16.45m on his first attempt. The field was topped by American John Maurins with a 19.49m effort.

At the 2011 edition in Miramar, Florida, Michelle Lee Ahye (Women’s 100m) and Elton Walcott (Men’s Triple Jump) won their events while Deon Lendore (Men’s 400m), Kai Selvon (Women’s 200m) and the Men’s 4x400m team (Lendore, Machel Cedenio, Jereem Richards and Moriba Morain) bagged silvers.
