Vranes: U-23s will bounce back
Published: Thursday, July 16, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Despite losing their opening match 4-0 to Uruguay at the ongoing Pan American Games on Monday at the CIBC Pan Am Hamilton Soccer Stadium, T&T men's Under-23 football coach Zoran Vranes is backing his team to come back strongly in their remaining matches against Paraguay and Mexico.

T&T found it difficult to match their South American opponents with Fabricia Duarte opening the scoring in the fifth minute after goalkeeper Javon Sample failed to collect a corner kick.

Uruguay doubled its lead in the 20th when Federico Ricca headed home from a corner before Nicolas Albarracin blasted past Sample to put Uruguay 3-0 ahead on the half hour mark.

T&T was then reduced to ten men in the 59th minute when Alvin Jones was issued a straight red card before Brian Lozano completed the rout with a free-kick strike in the 68th.

T&T got more into the match after the break and started to see a bit more of the ball but there was not much offering to trouble Uruguay on the day.

Speaking after the match, the Yugoslavian-born Vranes conceded that his opponents were too much over the 90 minutes.

"We faced very strong opponents and they were very inspired," Vranes said.

"Their team has a lot of experience and with players from the recent Fifa Under-20 World Cup and we were missing some key players like Kadeem Corbin and Rundell Winchester, who are with the senior team at the Concacaf Gold Cup.

But it was a good exercise because these are the level of matches that will be good for the players at this age.

"We are getting a good period together here with the training and of course these matches will come in very good for us. Hopefully the team can grow and the players will benefit from it. I expect we will give a better showing in the next two matches," Vranes added.

Paraguay and Mexico drew 1-1 in the other Group B game on Monday while Brazil defeated Canada 4-1 and Panama beat Peru 2-1 a day earlier in Group A action.

T&T faces Paraguay on Friday from 8.35 pm followed by its final round-robin group match against Mexico on Tuesday at 5.35 pm.

By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)
Published: Thursday, July 16, 2015

Dylan Carter

Teenage T&T swimmer Dylan Carter had this country's best showing at the 2015 Pan American Games, Toronto, Canada, thus far on Tuesday night when he placed fifth in the men's 100m freestyle A-Final at the Pan Am Aquatics Centre.

Swimming from lane seven in the eight-man final, Carter who attends the University of Southern California touched the wall in 49.10 seconds to trail Argentina's Federico Grabich (48.26), his schoolmate and hometown swimmer Santo Candorelli (48.57), Brazilian Marc Chierighini (48.80) and another USC swimmer, Venezuelan Christian Quintero (49.06).

The other finishers in the final were Canada's Yuri Kusil (49.26), Brazil's Matheus Santana (49.58) and Suriname's Renzo Tjon-A-Tjoe (49.60).

On Tuesday morning when the heats took place, the 19-year-old Carter, a silver medal winner in the men's 50m butterfly at the 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Champions was third fastest in heat one in 49.29 seconds behind Condorelli (48.88) and Kisil (49.07).

Grabich (48.60), Chierighini (48.92) and Tjon-A-Tjoe (49.47) were the qualifiers from heat two while Quintero (49.07) and Santana (49.52) advanced from heat three.

Missing out on a spot in the final was USA's Cullen Jones, who at the London 2012 Olympic Games won gold in the 4x100m medley relay, silver in the 50m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay.

Four years earlier, he also won gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, becoming the first African-American man to win a gold medal in swimming at an Olympics (Beijing 2008), while in 2007 at the FINA World Aquatics Championships he won gold in 4x100m freestyle relay and was second in 50m freestyle.

Today, (Thursday) Carter will be back in action in the 100m butterfly heats while tomorrow he joins Olympic and two-time World Championship bronze medallist, George Bovell in the hunt for 50m freestyle glory.

…..Women Soca Warriors, Colombia in 1-1 draw

The national women's football team made it two straight drawn results from their round-robin group after recent Tobago House of Assembly "Sportswoman of the Year" award winner Kennya "Yaya" Cordner netted an 87th minute equaliser against recent Fifa Women's World Cup participants Colombia.

The Colombians who defeated one of the pre-Women World Cup favouites France, 2-0 at the tournament took a fourth minute lead through Ingrid Vidal and dominated possession for most of the match, but the Women Soca Warriors never dropped their heads and with three minutes left, Cordner capitalized on a blunder by goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda to stab home the loose ball.

It was the second time late match heroics saved the T&T women, who got a last gasp goal from captain Maylee Attin-Johnson in a 2-2 draw with Argentina in their group opener on Sunday at the same venue.

With the two points, T&T remained third on the four-team table, two behind Colombia which had a 1-0 win over Mexico in its curtain raiser. Mexico is second after whipping Argentina 3-1 in Tuesday's first match with a goal each from Teresa Noyla, Nayeli Rangel and Jennifer Ruiz while Florencia Bansegundo scored for the South Americans, who have one point.

On Sunday in the final round of Group A matches, T&T goes up against Mexico in a must win match and will be seeking to avenge a 1-0 Women's Gold Cup loss from 5.35pm while Argentina battles Colombia at 8.35pm.

.......Williams and Withfield stumble

At the Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre, top local men's beach volleyball pair,Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield came within two points of extending their match against Chilean brothers, Marcos and Esteban Grimalt to three sets, before falling 11-21, 20-22 to drop to 0-2 in the four-team pool.

Having gone under to Norceca Tour rivals, Puerto Ricans, Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock, 12-21, 15-21 in 32 minutes in their opening match on Monday, the Toco-born T&T play must now defeat El Salvador's Carlos Escobar and David Vargas today at noon to have any chance of advancing to the knockout phase.

And in the afternoon session, local women's pair, Ayanna Dyette and Malika Davidson also put up a very commendable showing in losing top one of the all-time top Norceca Tour pairs in Mexicans, Bibiana Candelas and Martha Revuelta, 23-25, 7-21 in 34 minutes.

It was the second loss in as many matches for Dyette and Davidson who were beaten by Argentines Ana

Gallay and Georgina Klug 11-21, 13-21 in their Pool D opener in 38 minutes on Tuesday.

Up next for the T&T women from 4.30 pm today is top Cuban pair, Linma Flores and Leila Martinez.

......Sailor Arrindell bags 38 points

At the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, T&T's 18-year-old Kelly Arrindell was third, seventh and seventh in the women's laser fifth, sixth and seventh races respectively for seventh spot overall with 38 net points, 11 out of a medal place.

Olympian Andrew Lewis stayed in the hunt for a top three finish as he ended eighth, seventh and seventh in his three races on the day in the men's laser class for 38 net points, and seventh spot overall as well, 12 out of a medal spot.

Both men and women events were scheduled to have race eight yesterday, but results were not available up to pres time while races nine and ten are carded for today from 11.35 and 1.35 pm respectively.

Today at the Pan Am Fields, the national men's hockey team will be hoping to bounce back from their 11-0 mauling from powerhouse Argentina when they tackle Cuba from 9 am in Pool A, a rematch of their Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games final, Cuba won 5-1 last November in Guadalajara, Mexico.

In their opener, Cuba battled to an entertaining 3-3 draw with USA, T&T's final round-robin opponent on Saturday from 11 am at the end of which the quarterfinals will take place.

Also today, T&T golfers Sachin Humar and Talin Rajendranath will compete in round one of men's competition from 8 am while women's pair Monifa Sealy and Christina Ferreira tee off at 10.12 am.

Mixed day for TT at Pan Am Games
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH Friday, July 17 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Men's Team Sprint Qualification at the Pan-Am Games yesterday. Author: ALLAN V CRANE

TRINIDAD AND Tobago’s cycling contingent opened their 2015 Pan American Games account with a fifth place finish in the Men’s Team Sprint event, as action continued at the Cisco Milton Velodrome in Toronto, Canada, yesterday.

The local trio of Jude Codrington, Justin Roberts and Olympian Njisane Phillip missed out on a place in the final after clocking 45.381 seconds in their showing. Codrington rode the opening lap in 18.032 while Roberts contested the second and crossed the finish line at 31.166s followed by Phillip, who completed the final ride. Originally, Quincy Alexander was scheduled to ride the Team Sprint, but due to a recent groin injury sustained in a pre-tournament meet in Mexico two weeks ago, he was unable to compete, so Phillip filled in. In last night’s final after press time, Canada was scheduled to square off against Venezuela.

In other cycling news, endurance rider Varun Maharajh placed ninth in the opening stage of the Men’s Omnium - Scratch Race. He then showed slight improvement by weaning out an eighth place (4:45.842) finish in the second stage, Individual Pursuit.

Maharajh was also expected to face the starter in the Elimination Race last night, but up to press time his results were unavailable. Meanwhile, T&T’s beach volleyball unit of Daneil Williams and Fabiel Whitfield won their first match of the tourney by getting past El Salvador in straight sets (2- 0) at the Chevrolet Centre. In the opening set, the local pair won 21-15 and was then pushed to the limit in the second, but eventually prevailed with a 26-24 result. Having lost their two previous matches against Puerto Rico and Chile respectively, the TT team still has a shot at progressing when they face Mexico in a quarter-final qualifying match today.

The women however, were unable to secure a win yesterday as they lost their third consecutive Pool ‘D’ match against Cuba 0-2. T&T’s Malika Davidson and Ayanna Dyette went down in the opening set 12-21, then faltered once more in the second to lose 9-21. They now challenge for 13th to 16th places when they do battle with the Cayman Islands today.

In field hockey action, the National men’s team drew 2-2 with Cuba in their second Pool ‘MA’ encounter. Cuba opened the scoring from forward Yoandy Blanco in 22nd minute and held the lead to the break. At the resumption, TT’s Akim Toussaint levelled with a strike in the 51st minute. But, his effort was soon wiped away two minutes later when Blanco struck again to retain a Cuban advantage (1-2). TT defender Solomon Eccles then burst into play five minutes after to save face for the Caribbean team with a drawn result.

The TT men play their final preliminary round match against powerhouses and defending Pan Am champions the USA tomorrow.

At the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Kelly-Ann Arrindell continued to be a threat on the waters as she placed 12th in the eighth race of the Women’s Laser Radial, and followed with an impressive fourth place in the race nine. Male sailor Andrew Lewis also had mixed results as he placed seventh in race eight of the Men’s Laser followed up by a ninth place finish in the following race.

And at the Aquatics Centre and Field House, swimmer Dylan Carter was unable to advance to the finals of the Men’s 100m butterfly after placing fifth in 53.89s.

In action for TT today will be the men’s beach volleyball team against Mexico, the women equivalent facing Cayman Islands, Phillip and Roberts facing the starter in the Men’s Flying 200m, Maharajh continuing his prowess in the three remaining stages of Omnium racing, the Men’s Under-23 football team will meet Paraguay, Arrindell and Lewis on the waters in race 11 and Roger Daniel in 50m Pistol qualification.

The T&T trio of Jude Carrington, Justin Roberts and Olympic finalist Njisane Phillip just missed out on qualification to the medal ride when they ended in fifth spot in the men’s Team Sprint event at the Cycling Track, Toronoto, Canada at the 28th Pan American Games, Toronto, Canada, yesterday.

Leading off the three-lap event for T&T was Codrington, who was clocked at 18.032 and he was followed by Roberts who had a fast 13.134 clocking for a combined time of 31.166. It was now up to the high profile, USA-based Phillip to try and get T&T into the top two of the event, but his time of 14.215 gave T&T a combined time of 45.381 seconds which was good enough for fifth best.

Host Canada (44.242) and Venezuela (44.715) had the top two teams and qualified for the gold medal ride which was contested last night, while Brazil (44.918) and Colombia (44.961), the third and fourth best teams in the qualifiers battled for the bronze. USA (46.145) and Argentina (48.861), two countries expected to be in medal contention were sixth and seventh respectively.

Local cyclists, Varun Maharaj also pedaled off his medal quest in the Men’s Omnium and was in ninth spot after the Scratch Finals (15000 metres) and Individual Pursuit (4,000m) with 50 points. In the Scratch finals, Maharaj was ninth from a field of 11 for 24 points and followed with an eight place in the individual pursuit (4,000m) for 26 points.

Last night, the Elimination Race was scheduled to come off, while today, the 10K Time Trial (11.24am); Flying Lap (12.19pm) and Points Race (7.40pm) will conclude the competition. Today, Phillip who got bronze in the men’s sprint in 2011 in Mexico will go after gold in the same event with Roberts while Roger Daniel looks to add to his bronze medal from 2011 in the Men's 50m Pistol, and Marlon Moses competes in the Men's 50m Rifle Prone.

Calypso Stickmen rally for draw

Australia-based forward Akim Toussaint and Solomon Eccles scored in the final ten minutes as T&T senior men's hockey team rebounded from its 11-0 loss at the hands of Argentina with  a2-2 draw against reigning Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games champions Cuba in Pool A play at the Pan Am Fields.

At the end of the first 15 minute quarters, the scores were goalless, but Cuba which spanked T&T 5-1 in the CAC Games Final in Guadalajara, Mexico last November took a 1-0 into the half thanks to a 22nd minute item from Yoandy Blanco. Both teams then fought out a 0-0 third quarter, before Toussaint drew T&T level in the 51st minute, only for Blanco to restore his team's slim lead at 2-1, two minutes later.

However, T&T's determination would eventually pay off with a minute left as Eccles slammed home the equalizer to earn his team a share of the points, its first of the tournament ahead of its final round-robin match with USA on Saturday from 11am at the end of which the quarterfinals will take place.

Williams, Whitfield stay alive

At the Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre, T&T men's beach volleyball pair,Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield advanced to the knockout phase of the tournament when the defeated  El Salvador’s Carlos Escobar and David Vargas 21-15, 26-24 in 46 minutes their final Pool D match to end with a 1-2 record.

In their previous two matches, the T&T duo was beaten by  Chilean brothers, Marcos and Esteban Grimalt 11-21, 20-22 and NORCECA Tour rivals, Puerto Ricans, Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock, 12-21, 15-21.

The Grimalt's defeated Rodriguez and Haddock 21-19, 21-11 for top spot in the group and an automatic quarterfinal spot while as third placed finishers, T&T advanced to round-of-16 where they face Mexicans, Juan Virgen and Rodolfo Ontiveros today. Rodriguez and Haddock come up against Venezuelans, Jackson Henriquez and Jesus Villafane in another last-16 match.

However, local women's duo, Ayanna Dyette and Malika Davidson exited the main draw of the  tournament after a 12-21, 9-21 loss to Cubans Linma Flores and Leila Martinez to end with a 0-3 round-robin record in Pool D.

First year playing partners, Dyette and Davidson went under to one of the all-time top NORCECA Tour pairs in Mexicans, Bibiana Candelas and Martha Revuelta, 23-25, 7-21, and Argentines Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug 11-21, 13-21. Today, in the playoff for 13th to 16th,  Dyette and Davidson come up against Cayman Islands teenagers, Chante Smith-Johnson and Illeann Powery.

Carter skips 100m butterfly

In the 50m freestyle, Carter will be joined by Olympic and two-time World Championship bronze medallist, George Bovell in the hunt for 50m freestyle glory.

Arrindell, Lewis stay in medal race frame

At the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, T&T’s 18-year-old Kelly Arrindell finished 12th in her first event of the day, race eighth in the  women’s laser competition, but then had an impressive fourth place finish, her second top five of the event followed by an eighth placing to move to 61 points and remained seventh overall with two more races left today ahead of the medal event.

Among the men, Olympian Andrew Lewis also stayed in the hunt for the medal race after he had finishes of seventh, ninth and seventh through events eigh, nine and ten yesterday to also improve to 61 points, but joint sixth with Argentina’s Julio Alsogaray with two events left today from 11.35 and 1.35pm respectively.

Jehue pulls out from Pan Am Games
Saturday, July 18 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Jehue Gordon

Reigning World men 400m hurdles champion, Jehue Gordon, was the only Trinidad and Tobago athlete who did not accompany his fellow competitive compatriots on yesterday’s 1:05am flight to the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, due to a last-minute medical request from his doctor and management team.

Gordon withdrew on medical grounds since he is currently nursing a minor injury. The 23-year-old track athlete and his management team felt it best to allow him time to recuperate rather than be subject to intense competition ahead of his title defence at the upcoming IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

However, the mood of National Pan Am-bound team members remained quite upbeat. Some of them have already enjoyed significant success on the international circuit within recent weeks and this augurs well in terms of their preparation and expected performance in Toronto. The foreign-based athletes were expected to join their local counterparts yesterday and over the weekend.

Cyclist Njisane Phillip joined swimmer George Bovell on T&T’s medal list at the Pan American Games when he won silver in the Men’s Match Sprint at the Cisco Milton Velodrome in Toronto last night. Coming up against Canadian Hugo Barrette in the final, Phillip was beaten in two races by the local, who clocked 10.409 and 10.709, respectively.

It was the 24 year old Phillips’s second Pan Am medal following his bronze in the same event in Mexico four years ago. He had earlier made it through the semifinals by defeating Brazilian Flavio Cipriano in times of 10.711 and 10.761.

Phillip will begin competing in the Keirin today, entering a heat which includes American Matt Baranoski, Barrette and Argentinian Leandro Bottasso. His teammate Varun Maharaj placed ninth in the 40,000m points race of the Men’s Omnium, giving him a ninth place overall finish.

On Friday night, Bovell won T&T’s first medal of the Games when he placed third in the Men’s 50m freestyle at the CIBC Aquatic Centre and Field House. Bovell clocked 22.17 to finish behind American Josh Schneider (21.86) and Brazilian Bruno Fratus (21.91) while Puerto Rican Erik Risolvato (22.22) and American Olympic gold medallist Cullen Jones (22.23) rounded out the top five.

It marked Bovell’s fifth Pan American medal, following his two golds and two silvers at the 2003 Games.

Meanwhile, Dylan Carter won the event’s B Final, touching the wall in 22.39 to edge Brazilian Nicholas Santos (22.55) and Canadian Karl Krug (22.59).

At the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, 18-year-old Kelly-Ann Arrindell placed fifth in the Women’s Laser Radial Medal Race while Olympian Andrew Lewis was seventh in the Men’s Laser Medal Race.

In football, T&T’s Men team squandered a 1-0 lead to go down 5-1 to Paraguay. Midfielder Nathanel Garcia put T&T ahead in the 53rd minute but the Paraguayans struck back hard with goals from Carlos Ferreira (63rd and 71st), Ivan Ramirez (65th), Derlis Alegre (76th) and Arturo Aranda (79th). The result left T&T at the bottom of Pool B with two losses in two matches. Its third and final group game will be against Mexico on Tuesday.

T&T’s women’s team was down 3-1 to Mexico at press time yesterday evening. At the Angus Glen Golf Club, Sachin Kumar and Talin Rajendranath both finished the third day in a four way tie for 24th place on a tally of 227 (+11). Kumar shot 73 yesterday to go with his 78 and 76 over the first two days while Rajendranath shot 75, having registered 74 and 78 previously.

The table was led by Chilean Felipe Aguilar with 205 (-11). Monifa Sealy shot a 77 (+5) to give her a three day tally of 235 (+19) while Christina Ferreira’s 79 (+7) left her on 248 (+32). All of the golfers were yet to finish the round so overall standings were not yet final.

In beach volleyball, T&T’s men beat Nicaragua 2-1 to qualify for the final of the 9-12th playoff. T&T’s Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams won the first set over Nicaragua’s Dany Lopez Alvarado and Ruben Mora Romero 23-21, lost the second 17-21 and won the third 15-13 in a match lasting 58 minutes. They will come up against Venezuela in the battle for ninth place.

In field hockey, T&T’s men went down 2-1 to USA. The Americans went up 2-0 in the first quarter with goals from forward Holt Williams (6th) and midfielder Alex Grassi (13th) though T&T struck back when forward Ishmael Campbell found the net in the 14th to keep the match alive. Despite the best efforts of both teams, the scores remained the same by the final whistle. The result saw T&T finish at the bottom of Pool A with one draw and two losses from its three games.

First medals Phillip, Bovell get T&T on Pan Am Games podium
Published on Jul 18, 2015, 9:41 pm AST (T&T Express)

Njisane Phillip Claims Silver for Trinidad and Tobago at Pan Am Games

Sprint cyclist Njisane Phillip landed Trinidad and Tobago’s second medal of the Pan American Games last evening when he copped silver in the match sprint final in Toronto, Canada.

Phillip’s silver improved on ace swimmer George Bovell’s bronze in the men’s 50 metre freestyle final on Friday night.

Yesterday at the cycling velodrome, Olympian Phillip went down in straight rides to Canadian Hugo Barrette in the final, but had progressed there by beating Brazil’s Flavio Cipriano in straight rides in their semi-final match-up earlier yesterday. Phillip won the first ride in 10.711 seconds before returning to take the second ride-off in 10.761. He also registered a straight-rides success over Canada’s Joseph Veloce in their quarter-final duel on Friday night.

Taking third was Venezuela’s Hersony Canelon who beat Cipriano also in straight rides.

On Friday, Bovell clocked 22.17 seconds, but the USA’s Josh Schneider won gold in 21.86, with Bruno Fratus of Brazil taking silver in 21.91.

T&T’s other swimmer, Dylan Carter, won the B final in 22. 39 seconds after losing a swim-off against Puerto Rico’s Erik Risolvato for the final spot in the men’s A final after both men were tied for eighth position going into the final.

It was also a productive day at the beach for T&T’s women volleyballers Ayana Dyette and Malika Davidson. They defeated the Cayman Islands’ Chante Smith-Johnson and Lleann Powery 21-18, 21-18, for a 2-0 straight set victory in a playoff to decide positions 13 through 16. They now face Guatemala to decide 13th position at 10 a.m. today.

And the men’s pair of Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams missed out on a medal spot when they were defeated 21-16, 21-9 by Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Rodolfo Ontiveros in their quarter-final contest on Friday. Whitfield and Williams rebounded to beat Nicaragua’s Dany Lopez Alvarado and Reuben Mora Romero, 23-21, 17-21, 15-13, for a 2-1 win in a playoff match for positions 9th-12th. They face Venezuela tomorrow for ninth place.

In field hockey action, T&T’s men team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss at the hands of the USA in a Pool MA preliminary round match. William Holt gave the Americans the lead in the sixth minute and Alex Grassi made it 2-0 in the 13th before Ishmael Campbell pulled a goal back for T&T a minute later.

T&T’s Under-22 male footballers were beaten 5-1 by Paraguay late on Friday after midfielder Nathaniel Garcia gave them the lead in the 53rd minute of the match. The South Americans responded with goals from striker Carlos Ferreira (63rd & 71st), who came on as a substitute in the 56th minute, Ivan Ramirez (65th), Derlis Alegre (76th) and Arturo Aranda in the 79th.

T&T’s women footballers also went down 3-1 to Mexico and thus were denied a place in the semi-finals.

Stephany Mayor got a double in the first half for the Central Americans, But Mariah Shade replied six minutes into the second half before Monica Ocampo restored Mexico’s two-goal advantage in the 70th minute.

And in action on the water, T&T’s sailors Kelly-Ann Arrindell and Andrew Lewis had mixed fortunes. Arrindell captured top spot in the Women’s laser radial class medal race to pick up two race points but it was not enough to get her on the podium as her combined total of 72 points saw her finish joint fifth with Lucia Falasca of Argentina.

USA’s Paige Riley won gold with a total of 50 points, with silver going to Dolores Moreira of Uruguay while Brazil’s Fernanda Demetrio took bronze.

In the medal race of the Men’s laser, Lewis finished eighth and picked up 16 race points in the process to finish with a combined total of 90 which was good enough for seventh position overall.

Guatemala’s Juan Maegli won gold with a combined low score of 39 points with Robert Scheidt of Brazil capturing silver and Canada’s Lee Parkhill collecting bronze.

TORONTO\\\\\ Fresh off his Pan American Games silver medal in the Sprint on Saturday, Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Njisane Phillip was in action again yesterday, this time reaching the Men’s Keirin final after placing second in the first round heat behind sprint gold medallist Hugo Barrette.

On Saturday, Phillip went down in straight rides to Canadian Barrette, in the match sprint final, bagging T&T’s second medal (a silver) at the Toronto games and earning a US$2,000 bonus as part of the T&T Olympic Committee’s (TTOC) medal bonus programme.

Swimmer George Bovell earned T&T’s first medal at the games, a bronze, in the 50m freestyle and also received a medal bonus of US$1,000.

Phillip was scheduled to come up against Barrette in the Keirin final late yesterday. The other finalists were Hersony Canelon Vera, Jair Tjon En Fa, Lea Bottasso and Fabian Puerta Zapata.

Meanwhile, veteran swimmer and Olympic medallist Bovell, became the first athlete to benefit from the programme. The medal bonus programme is an essential component of “TenGolds24,” the ten or more Olympic Gold medals by 2024 Athlete Welfare and Preparation Fund launched by the TTOC last year.

In an e-mail on Saturday, TTOC president Brian Lewis said “It is fitting that he became the first athlete to benefit from the fund launched by TTOC president Brian Lewis last year. As a four-time Olympian, Bovell is the Caribbean’s most successful swimmer, the holder of multiple world championship medals, a former world record holder and Sportsman of the year 2014. He embodies sporting excellence and the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.”

“Few athletes have worked as hard as he has and given so much inside and outside of the pool. Most recently Bovell has partnered with Atlantic and other local organisations, to host successful several swim clinics in Trinidad and Tobago. The clinics, which were designed to enhance the technical abilities of young athletes, while providing them with strategies for use daily in training, have been hugely successful,” Lewis added.

Lewis also wished Bovell a happy birthday saying: “Bovell has already qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics, and thus has another opportunity to add precious metal to his extensive medal collection. He represents the best of us. Happy Birthday.”

In other results in Canada yesterday, the T&T women volleyball team of Malika Davidson and Ayana Dyette lost 21-15, 21-16 to Guatemala in the Women’s Beach Volleyball playoff of the 13th-14th spots.

In golf, T&T’s Christina Ferreira finished ten-over par, She was in a three-way tie for 26th place in the women’s individual competition while Monifa Sealy finish 11-over par to finish 29th after round four.

Talin Rajendranath shot two over par in the Men’s Individual competition to tie with three other players for 18th place while Sachin Kumar hit three over par to finish tied for 22nd place with two other players. Together the T&T golfers combined for a score of 156 in the mixed team event, placing them last.

Today, Chemere Taylor will hit the ring for the women’s middle weight (69 - 75kg) quarter-final bout against Yenebier Guillen Benitez. The T&T men’s beach volleyball team of Daniel Williams and Fabien Whitfield will also be in action today against Venezuela in the playoff for 9th place.

Njisane fifth in Pan Am keirin
Monday, July 20 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Trinidad and Tobago’s Njisane Phillip

NJISANE PHILLIP was unable to gain back-to-back cycling medals in the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada yesterday.

On Saturday, Phillip got silver in the men’s match sprint but, in the keirin, the 24-year-old placed fifth out of six finalists.

Fabian Puerta Zapata of Colombia captured the gold medal, while Hersony Canelon of Venezuela, the match sprint bronze medallist, finished second and Canada’s Hugo Barrette, who defeated Phillip in Saturday’s match sprint final, was third yesterday. Leandro Bottasso of Argentina finished in fourth spot and Jair Tjon En Fa of Suriname was sixth and last.

Golfer Talin Rajendranath was 24th in the men’s individual category with a 13-over-par 301, one shot more than Sachin Kumar, who finished in 25th spot out of 32 entrants.

In the women’s individual section, ace national golfer Monifa Sealy was joint 22nd, along with Bolivia’s Natalia Perez, out of a field of 30. Both completed their four rounds with scores of 318 each, while another TT participant, Christina Ferreira, shared 26th spot with Priscilla Schmid of Uruguay with 330.

The national women’s beach volleyball duo of Malika Davidson and Ayana Dyette finished 14th overall after they were beaten by the Guatemala pair of Maria Orellana and Blanca Recinos 21-15, 21-16 in a 40-minute affair, for the 13th and 14th places.

Today, Trinidad and Tobago men’s beach volleyball pair of Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams will be vying for ninth place with Venezuela’s duo of Jackson Henriquez and Jesus Villafane.

Chimere Taylor, TT’s lone boxer at the Games, will make her debut when she faces Yenebier Guillen Benitez of the Dominican Republic in the quarter-final round of the women’s middleweight.

Despite copping silver and bronze medals over the weekend from both Njisane Phillip and George Bovel, respectively, Trinidad and Tobago were unable to increase their medal tally yesterday as the Pan American Games continued in Toronto, Canada.

Dorian Alexander failed to advance in the men's eighth final (68kg and under) taewkondo bout at the Mississauga Sports Centre. His opponent, Colombian Miguel Angel Trejos defeated him 11-5, with four of his points coming as a result of penalisations against Alexander. The other combat sport athlete on the cards yesterday was Chimere Taylor, who lost via techincal knockout at 1.20 into the second round of her bout against Yenebier Benitez-Guillen of the Domican Republic at the Oshawa Sports Centre.

In the sands, T&T's male beach volleyball pair were winners over a Venezuelan team while their female counterparts were not as fortunate a day before on Sunday, as Malaika Davidson and Ayanna Dyette lost 21-15; 21-16 in straight sets against Maria Jose Orellana and Bianca Recinos of Guatemala.

Today features the men's field hockey team, who suffered a close 2-1 defeat to the USA over the weekend. They will be hoping to bag their first win of the Games, as currently they have two defeats and one draw on their 2015 Pan Am record. They face their Canadian hosts at the Pan Am Hockey Fields at St George University.

The Under-23 men’s football team will be playing for pride when they face Mexico in their final group B match, as they already have no chance of progressing out of the group stage. The team that also failed to advance past the first stage of Olympic qualifying earlier in the month are coming off a 5-1 defeat to Paraguay last Friday. The match kicks off at 5.35pm at the Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium.

Also today, T&T will feature four athletes in athletics as the women's and men's 100-metre heats begin from 10.30am at the CIBC Pan Am Athletics Stadium. Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Semoy Hackett will be T&T's female competitors, while Marcus Duncan and Keston Bledman will be representing the red, white and black from 11.10am.

Women’s boxer, Chimere Taylor, missed a first ever medal for T&T among her gender at the 28th Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada yesterday when she was kayoed in her middleweight (69-75 kg) bout by Dominican Republic’s Yenebier Guillen Benitez. Fighting at the Oshawa Sports Centre, 27-year-old Taylor was trailing 30-27 on points  when she was floored by her opponent with a minute and 20 seconds left in round two of their quarterfinal, with the winner certain of a bronze medal for the least.

In taekwondo, Central American and Caribbean Games bronze medal winner in 2010 and 2014, Dorian Alexander, 31,  started well before losing to Colombian Miguel Trejos, 5-11 in their three-round battle, helped by four penalty points  at the Mississauga Sports Centre.

Alexander, who fought at the 2009, 2011 and 2013 World Taekwondo Championships and is a medical doctor by profession, won the first round 2-1, but in the second round Trejos turned up the heat and outscored his T&T opponent 8-1 to take command of the contest, 9-3, before the second round played out 2-all on points.

At the Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre, Fabien Whitfield and Daneil William secured ninth spot via their default win over Venezuelans Jackson Henriques and Jesus Villafane. On Sunday night, cyclist Njisane Phillip failed to add to his silver medal in the Match Sprint when he ended fifth in the Men’s Keirin which was contested over eighth laps at the Cisco Milton Pan Am Veledrome.

In the morning heats, Phillip was second in heat two behind Canada’s Hugo Barrette while Argentina’s Leandro Battasso earned the other qualifying spot to the final ahead of USA’s Matt Baranoski. And in the other heat, Colombian Fabian Puerto won ahead of Venezuela’s Hersony Canelon and Suriname’s Jair Tjon En Fa, while Brazil’s Flavio Cipriano was fourth and did not advance.

However, in the six-man ride off for the gold medal,  Phillip could only muster a fifth spot behind gold medal winner Puerta while Canelon took silver and Barrette, bronze. Bottasso was fourth while Tjon En Fa was sixth followed by Cipriano and Baranoski. At the Angus Glen Golf Club, the local quartet of Sachin Kumar, Talin Rajendranath, Christina Ferreira and Monifa completed tough campaigns.

Rajendranath carded rounds of 74, 78 75 and four over 74 for a total of +13 (301) and 24th, one spot above Kumar who had scores of 78, 76, 73 and 75 for a +14 (302) tally. Ferreira carded a final round of 82 (+10) to go with previous rounds of84, 85 and 79 a four-day total of 330 (+42) an 26th while Sealy ended four places higher after she shot a final round of 83 (+11)  to add to previous scores of 81, 77 and 77 for a combined 318 (+30) and joint 22nd with Bolivian Natalia Soria.

And in the Mixed Event, the T&T quartet had rounds of 155, 153, 150 and 156 for +38 for 15th. At the Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre, T&T’s Ayana Dyette and Malika Davidson ended in 14th spot after going under to Guatemalans, Maria Jose Orellan and Blanca Recinos, 15-21, 16-21.

Today (Tuesday), at the CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium, T&T men, beaten 4-0 by Uruguay and 5-1 by Paraguay tackle Mexico from 5.35pm while at the Pan Am Hockey Field, the national men’s team come up against the host country in their final quarterfinal from 7.30pm. So far swimmer George Bovell (50m freestyle bronze) and Phillip are the lone T&T athletes to medal at the games which steps into high gear this week with the start of the track and field events.

TT sprinters make Pan Am entry
Tuesday, July 21 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Kelly-Ann Baptiste

THE FOCUS of the Trinidad and Tobago contingent will be in track and field, as action will get underway today in the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada.

Nine athletes will be competing in five events, including national 100- metre champions Keston Bledman and Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

Bledman and Marcus Duncan will be featuring in the men’s 100m heats, while Baptiste and Semoy Hackett will be involved in the women’s 100m heats.

Veteran Josanne Lucas and Sparkle McKnight are scheduled to race in the women’s 400-metre semi-finals, while Alena Brooks and Jessica James will be participating in the women’s 800m “semis”. And Ayanna Alexander is expected to line up in the women’s triple jump today.

Also today, Trinidad and Tobago will be facing a tough test against hosts Canada in the men’s hockey quarter-finals. In the preliminary round Trinidad and Tobago, in Pool A, finished fourth and last with one point after three matches. But, with only eight teams in total, TT moved into the “quarters”.

The national men’s Under-23 football team will conclude their campaign in Group B today when they oppose Mexico. TT lost 4-0 to Uruguay and 5-1 to Paraguay in their previous two matches. Chimere Taylor had a forgettable debut at the Pan Am Games yesterday.

The lone Trinidad and Tobago boxer at the Games, the 27-year-old Taylor had no answer to the power of Dominican Republic’s Yenebier Guillen Benitez, as Swedish referee Anders Andersson had to stop the fight in the third and final round of their women’s middleweight bout. Guillen Benitez was already ahead on the judges’ cards, having won the first two rounds 10-9 and 10-8, and was leading 10-8 in the third round.

Another Pan Am Games TT debutant Dorian Alexander was sent packing in the men’s taekwondo 68kg first round.

Facing Miguel Angel Trejos of Colombia, Alexander was comprehensively beaten 11-5.

Trinidad and Tobago’s duo of Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams finished ninth in the men’s beach volleyball after their Venezuelan opponents defaulted.

Don't know what is up with Josanne Lucas but she is clearly no longer the athlete that she used to be back in 2009 when she won bronze at the World Championships.

She placed 7th today in Semi-Final 2 of the 400m Hurdles in 1:00.30 and did not make it into the Final.

Its just the Heats so lets not get too excited yet.
We can get excited once he gets to the final and medals.
Regards the time I had little doubt that Bledman would also run a few sub-10s this season outside of T&T because he has done it in the past before and after clocking sub-10s at National Champs.

PS: Oh the wind reading was +2.8 but I still have little doubt he will run a few legal sub-10's outside of T&T this season.

First of all, I did not read anything about wind in the article until you mentioned it. And 9.95 is certainly not morocoy pace. And plus he did it outside of POS. Off course I excited.

Trinidad and Tobago track stars, Keston Bledman and Kelly-Ann Baptiste produced solid performances yesterday to establish themselves as medal contenders at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Bledman won the third and final men’s 100 metres first round heat in a wind-aided 9.95 seconds to advance to today’s semifinal round as the fastest qualifier. American Remontay McClain was second in 9.99, while third spot went to Bahamian Shavez Hart (10.13).

The other T&T sprinter in the men’s century, Marcus Duncan finished seventh in heat two in a windy 10.52 seconds, and was eliminated. American BeeJay Lee won that heat in 9.99. Canadian Andre De Grasse, meanwhile, topped heat one in 10.06.

At 6.50 this evening, Bledman will run in the first semifinal heat. The final is scheduled for 8.50pm.

Baptiste emerged victorious in the opening women’s 100m heat in a wind-assisted 11.07 seconds. Her T&T teammate, Semoy Hackett was third in heat two in a season’s best 11.17. American Barbara Pierre won heat two in 10.92, while top spot in heat three went to Brazilian Claudia Ana Silva in a windy 10.96.

At 6.25pm today, Baptiste and Silva will clash in the opening semifinal. And at 6.32, Hackett and Pierre square off in the second semi. The championship race takes place at 8.30.

At 7.15pm, Sparkle McKnight faces the starter in the women’s 400m hurdles final. In yesterday’s qualifying round, the T&T athlete won heat one in a season’s best 56.56 seconds. Her main rival for the title will be American Shamier Little, the winner of heat two in 56.08.

Another T&T hurdler, Josanne Lucas was eliminated after finishing seventh in heat two in one minute, 00.30 seconds.

T&T’s Ayanna Alexander secured eighth spot in the women’s triple jump with a 13.83 metres effort. Colombians Caterine Ibarguen and Yosiry Urrutia earned gold and bronze, respectively. Ibarguen disturbed the sand at a wind-assisted 15.09m, while Urrutia jumped a windy 14.38m. Brazilian silver medallist Keila Costa produced a windy 14.50m effort.

Alena Brooks got home in 2:07.84 to finish fifth in heat one in the women’s 800m event. The clocking was not fast enough to earn the T&T halfmiler a “fastest loser” berth in the final.

Cleopatra Borel will bid for precious metal in today’s women’s shot put final, starting at 6.45pm. Deandra Daniel competes in the women’s high jump final from 10.05am. Janeil Bellille will be on show in the opening round of the women’s 400m. Machel Cedenio and Jarrin Solomon will run in the men’s 400m qualifying round. And Emanuel Mayers bids for a men’s 400m hurdles championship race berth.

T&T slumped to their third straight defeat in the men’s football tournament, going under 4-2 to Mexico, yesterday. Ricardo John scored in the seventh minute and Shackeil Henry netted in the 39th to earn T&T a 2-0 halftime lead. But Mexico battled back in the second period of play. Jorge Espericueta struck in the 60th minute, and Daniel Alvarez notched the equaliser in the 68th.

The Mexicans then netted two late goals to snatch victory. Marco Bueno found the target in the 90th minute, and Martin Zuniga put the icing on the cake in time added on.

T&T ended their Pool “B” campaign with three defeats in three outings.

At press time, last night, T&T’s hockey men were still locked in battle with Canada in a quarterfinal fixture.

Bledman, Baptiste start Pan Am impressively

TRINIDAD AND Tobago’s medal count at the Pan Am Games is expected to increase significantly today, the second full day of competition in track and field at the Games in Toronto. Sprinters Keston Bledman and Kelly-Ann Baptiste, shot putter Cleopatra Borel and quarter-milers Machel Cedenio and Jarrin Solomon are expected to be in the spotlight contending.

Yesterday, Baptiste, Bledman and hurdler Sparkle Mc Knight led a strong showing by the national athletics contingent at the CIBC Pan Am Parapan Am Athletics Stadium.

Baptiste was the first TT athlete on the track, and she cruised in the Women’s 100 metres, winning Heat One in 11.07 seconds, ahead of Angela Tenorio of Ecuador (11.17) and Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica (11.27); Baptiste’s time would prove to be the fourth-fastest of the Women’s first round.

Semoy Hackett joined Baptiste in the semi-finals after finishing 3rd in Heat Two. Hackett clocked a season’s best 11.17 as she followed American Barbara Pierre (10.92) and Brazil’s Rosangela Santos (11.08) across the line.

Later, Keston Bledman ran the fastest time of the Men’s opening round, producing a blistering 9.95 seconds to win Heat Three from American Remontay Mc Clain (9.99) and Bahamian Shavez Hart (10.13).

However, Marcus Duncan failed to advance to the semi-final round, finishing 7th in Heat Two in a slow 10.52 seconds. American Beejay Lee won the heat in 9.99, with Barbadian Ramon Gittens (10.03) and Antoine Adams of St Kitts/Nevis (10.11) completing the top three.

Another TT athlete to impress was Sparkle Mc Knight, who won the first semi-final in the Women’s 400 metre Hurdles. Mc Knight clocked a season’s best of 56.56 seconds, finishing ahead of Mexico’s Zudikey Rodriguez (57.64) and Costa Rica’s Sharolyn Scott (57.76).

Josanne Lucas failed to advance from the other semi-final, finishing 7th in a disappointing time of one minute, 0.30 seconds. American Shamier Little was first in 56.08, followed by Canada’s Sarah Wells (56.77) and Cuba’s Zurian Hechavarria (56.82).

Today, the in-form Cleopatra Borel will bid for gold in the Women’s Shot Put Final; Deandra Daniel will also be in action in the final of the Women’s High Jump.

Janeil Bellille will be the first TT track athlete in action, running in lane two in the first of the Women’s 400 metre semis. In the Men’s 400 metres semis, Jarrin Solomon has been assigned lane eight in the first heat; Machel Cedenio, however, has been placed in lane three of the second.

In the absence of World Champion Jehue Gordon, Emmanuel Mayers will be TT’s lone entrant in the Men’s 400 metre Hurdles, running in the second of three heats.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste will run in lane three of the first Women’s 100 metre semi-final and Semoy Hackett has the same lane for Heat Two; Bledman will run in lane five of the first Men’s 100 metre semi-final. Both he and Baptiste will be expecting to be in their respective finals, which will be the last events on the day’s programme. Meanwhile, late in the day, the national Under-23 footballers ended their campaign at the Games with a heartbreaking 2-4 loss against Mexico, thus finishing with zero points from their three group matches.

Despite rumours that the team would not play because of a wage dispute with the TTFA, TT had a 2-0 lead on the Mexicans at half- time. Ricardo John put them in front after just seven minutes, and Shackiel Henry doubled the lead in the 39th. However, Mexico hit back twice in the space of eight minutes in the second half; Jorge Espericueta (60th) and substitute Daniel Alvarez (68th) drew them level, and another substitute, Marco Bueno completed the turnaround in the 90th minute, before Martin Zuniga added the final blow in stoppage time.

In other Pan Am events, last night the TT Men’s Hockey team was engaged in battle against the hosts, Canada, in the last of the quarter- finals.

Keston Bledman, Kelly Ann Baptiste and Sparkle McKnight all won their heats to give T&T a strong showing on the opening day of the track and field portion of the Pan American Games at the CIBC Athletics Stadium in Toronto yesterday.

Competing in the third of three Men’s 100 metre heats, Bledman stopped the clock at 9.95 to edge American Remontay McClain (9.99) and Bahaman Shavez Hart (10.13).

His time was the fastest of the round while in his semifinal at 6.50 pm today, he will be the only runner to have clocked a sub-ten this year.

The final will be staged later tonight at 8.50 pm. Running in heat two, his teammate Marcus Duncan was eliminated from the event when he placed seventh in 10.52. That race was won by American Bee Jay Lee in 9.99 with Bajan Raymond Gittens in second in 10.03.

Meanwhile, Baptiste clocked 11.07 to win the first of three Women’s 100m heats, beating Ecuador’s Angela Tenorio (11.17) and Jamaican Schillonie Calvert (11.27).  Semoy Hacket also qualified for the semifinals, running a season best of 11.17 to finish third in heat two.

She was beaten to the line by American Barbara Pierre (10.92) and Brazilian Rosangela Santos (11.08). Baptiste will enter today’s first semifinal at 6:25 pm while Hackett will take off at 6.32 pm in the second race. The final will be run later tonight at 8:30 pm.

McKnight was also in good form, winning her Women’s 400m Hurdles semifinal in a season’s best of 56.56 to advance to today’s final, which will be run at 7.15 pm.

Her time was the second best of all the qualifiers. Josanne Lucas was not as successful in the other semifinal, placing seventh in 1:00.30.

Alena Brooks missed out on the Women’s 800m final when she finished her semifinal heat in fifth, clocking 2:07.84. Brazil’s Flavia De Lima was the victor in 2:02.39

Ayanna Alexander was also in action last night in the Women’s Triple Jump final.

Several T&T’s athletes will be in action today, including Deandra Daniel in the Women’s High Jump final, Janeil Bellille in the Women’s 400m semifinal, Jarrin Solomon and Machel Cedenio in the Men’s 400m semifinal, Emanuel Mayers in the Men’s 400m Hurdles semifinals and Cleopatra Borel in the Women’s shot put final. With no chance of advancing out of the group stage, T&T’s men’s football team squandered a 2-0 lead to go down 4-2 to Mexico in their final game.

Forward Ricardo John put T&T up 1-0 in the seventh minute while Henry Shakell increased the gap in the 39th. T&T maintained their 2-0 advantage until the 60th when Mexican midfielder Jorge Espericueta found the net.

Eight minutes later, substitute midfielder Daniel Alverez evened the score, which remained unchanged until the game’s dying minutes. Marco Bueno and Martin Zuniga each scored during injury time to hand the Mexicans the win.

The result left T&T at the bottom of Pool B with three losses in three games. Mexico finished at the top with seven points while Paraguay (4) and Uruguay (3) were second and third respectively.

Also last night, Men’s field hockey unit was set to face hosts Canada in the quarterfinal at 7.30 pm.

Track Stars Advance to the Semi-Finals
Tuesday, 21 July 2015 00:00 (TTOC.org)

Keston Bledman, winning 100m at Pan Am Games, Toronto 2015

Tuesday July 21st, Toronto, Canada– Trinidad and Tobago’s medal hunt on the track got off to a blazing start with Keston Bledman, Semoy Hackett and Kelly Ann Baptiste advancing to the semi finals of the 100m sprint event.

Bledman won his heat comfortably in 9.95 saying, “It was a good race. The wind was nice; the atmosphere was nice so it feels good. I’m just coming here and trying to execute one step at a time.” There was a bit of drama for his compatriot Marcus Duncan who faced the starter in the previous heat. There appeared to be an echo on the gun 40m into the race, which caused two of the runners to stop. Duncan slowed down and then was forced to play catch up. The race was eventually recalled, but Duncan didn’t seem to have anything left in the tank.  He eventually finished 7th in a time of 10.52 and didn’t advance.

On the women’s side, Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Semoy Hackett both qualified for the semi finals of the women’s 100m. Baptiste won her heat in 11.07 and said, “the aim was to qualify as easy as possible and I think I did that.” Hackett her roommate for this year’s Pan Am games ran a season’s best of 11.17 to advance to the next round.

In the quarter mile event, Sparkle McKnight won the first 400m hurdles heat in a season’s best time time of 56.56. Following the race she said, “It felt good, the wind was strong but I just wanted to win my heat and make it to the finals. I feel good about making the finals so I’m out to contend for a medal and do my best.” Her compatriot Joseanne Lucas finished seventh with an uncharacteristically slow time of 1:00:30 and did not advance.  Of her performance Lucas said, "I'm disappointed in the run. The race doesn't truly reflect my condition for the year. I'll just move on to the next one."

Triple Jumper Ayanna Alexander finished 8th in the women’s triple jump finals. Her furthest distance was 13.83. Over in the women’s 800m semfinal, Alena Brooks finished 5th in time of 2:07:84 and did not advance.

In field hockey, the men’s team lost 3-0 to Canada. The Men’s football team took an early lead in their final match versus Mexico, but could not hold on and went on to lose the game 4-2.

Track and field action continues tomorrow with the men’s 400m, semi-finals and finals for the 100m men and women, and the 400m hurdles final.

The Worlds team hasn't been picked yet so Marcus Ducan is not guaranteed to be on the team especially if certain other sprinters who have run the World Champs qualification standard this season can prove their fitness and form. Marcus has let himself down with his individual 100m Pan Am performance and the NAAA should factor that in deciding if he is likely to enhance or regress our Worlds 4x100m team with his inclusion.
