At the last Pan Am Games that took place in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2011, T&T won 4 medals that included 2 silver and 2 bronze. Cyclist Njisane Phillip won bronze in the Men's Individual Sprint Track, sprinter Emmanuel Callender won bronze in the Men's 100 metres, Cleopatra Borel won silver in the Women's shot put and Roger Daniel won silver in the Men's 10 metre air pistol.

Please post all your updates on our T&T athletes taking part in the various T&F events at the upcoming 2015 Summer Pan Am Games to this thread. Many thanks!

2015 Pan-American Games

The 2015 Pan American Games, officially the XVII Pan American Games or the 17th Pan American Games, is a major international multi-sport event that is scheduled to be held from July 10–26, 2015, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with some events held in seventeen other Golden Horseshoe communities such as Hamilton and Markham among others. Approximately 6,135 athletes from 41 nations are expected to participate in 36 sports. A record of 45% of competitors are expected to be women, the most ever for any multi sport event. The first event, water polo, will begin three days earlier, on July 7. Both the Pan American and Parapan American Games are being organized by the Toronto 2015 Organizing Committee (TO2015).

The 2015 Pan American Games will become the third Pan American Games hosted by Canada and the first by the province of Ontario. Previously, Canada hosted the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1999 Pan American Games, both in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The 2015 Parapan American Games will be held twelve days after the Pan American Games.

The 2015 Pan American Games will become the first completely ecologically friendly games, because it will be fully carbon neutral. The Games will also be the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Canada (in terms of athletes competing), double the size of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Athletics

Athletics offers a variety of iconic events. The track events feature distances from 100 metres to 10,000 metres, with the excitement of hurdles and the steeplechase as well. The field events include the throwing events of shot put, discus, javelin and hammer throw while the jumping events offer pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Track and field also includes, for men, the legendary decathlon (runs of 100 metres, 400 metres and 1,500 metres; 110-metre high hurdles; throws of javelin and discus; shot put; pole vault; high jump and long jump) and for women, the equally impressive heptathlon (100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-metre run, long jump, javelin and 800-metre run).

Track and field events will be held at the CIBC Pan/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium at York University and the road events will be held at the Ontario Place West Channel, with the start and finish line on Lake Shore Blvd.

Canada is expecting to field one of its strongest teams ever in 2015. The Canadian team won a historic five medals in the sport at the 2013 World Championship, including a bronze in the 4 x 100 m sprint relay. At the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Canadian team won 17 medals, including gold from Sultana Frizell (women’s hammer), James Steacy (men’s hammer), Derek Drouin (men’s high jump), Brianne Theisen-Eaton (women’s heptathlon) and Damian Warner (men’s decathlon).

Colombian triple jumper Caterine Ibargüen, a silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games, helped her country win a record eight medals at those Games. She is expected to be one of the favourites in Toronto.

Another pair to watch — arguably the ''world’s fittest couple” — in 2015 are  Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton, who won a silver medal at the 2013 World Championships, and her American husband Ashton Eaton, Olympic champion, world champion and world record holder in the decathlon.

History

Athletics dates back to the ancient Greeks of 776 BC when the only event at the first Olympic Games was a foot race that covered the length of the Athenian Olympic stadium. The modern form of athletics, including a variety of running, jumping, throwing, walking and combined events, evolved in the 19th century.

Athletics includes the disciplines of marathon, track and field and race walk.

How it Works

Marathon

A test of endurance, the marathon is a mass start event where athletes run 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometres) on pavement. First to cross the finish line wins.

Track and field

Track and field consists of sprint, middle- and long-distance track events, hurdles, relays, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, hammer throw, javelin, steeple chase and the combined events of decathlon and heptathlon.

Race walk

In the race walk, athletes must have one foot in contact with the ground at all times as well as keeping their supporting leg straight. They must hold this position from the time their foot first impacts the ground until the supporting leg passes below the body. To increase their pace, athletes will swivel and tilt their hips to lengthen their stride. Participants are watched closely by officials surrounding the race course to ensure that they comply with the rules. Men race in distances of 20 and 50 kilometres; women compete in a 20-kilometre event.

Venue (YOR)

CIBC Athletics Stadium, York University, Ian MacDonald Boulevard/Ottawa Road, Toronto, Ontario

The fully accessible CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Athletics Stadium is designed for certification by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) as a Class 1 track suitable for hosting Olympic and other top-tier competitions.

It will have a 400-metre track and an infield that supports throwing and jumping disciplines, as well as a scoreboard, professional broadcast capabilities, athlete change rooms, equipment storage and classroom space.

Spectators in the grandstand will have an unobstructed view of the field of play, as well as the natural landscape of the campus’s protected Boyer Woodlot.

The stadium is building on the world-class athletics infrastructure already present at York University, including the Toronto Track & Field Centre, which will serve as an athlete training and warm-up facility during the Games.

Sancho meets with TTOC again
Sunday, March 1 2015 (T&T Newsday)

New T&T Minister of Sport, Brent Sancho & TTOC President, Brian Lewis

Minister of Sport Senator Brent Sancho met with Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) president Brian Lewis on Friday at the Office of the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago.

Since coming into Office, it is the second meeting held between the Minister and the national Olympic committee.

The Minister was updated on the progress of the TTOC’s plans for the upcoming Pan Am Games scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada in July.

The main item on the agenda were travel plans and arrangements for the national contingent for the Games.

“Minister Sancho has been very positive and proactive in ensuring that the Ministry’s support is in place. He has asked us (TTOC) to keep him updated as he wants to make sure there are no hiccups and that all arrangements are in place well in advance of the Pan Am Games,” Lewis stated in a press release yesterday.

$$ for medals
By Mark Pouchet (T&T Express)
Published on May 22, 2015, 9:08 pm AST

TTOC president Brian Lewis

Trinidad and Tobago athletes will be compensated if they win a medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

That's because the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) is introducing a cash for medals initiative starting with the Pan Am Games in July.

Contacted yesterday, TTOC president Brian Lewis says the exact amount corresponding to each type of medal is still being worked out by the TTOC executive. He added the level of Games --Olympic Games medals will be awarded more than Pan Am Games medals-- will also be considered and determined.

But Lewis said the idea behind the introduction of the medal bonus is to encourage local athletes to raise their game.

"The thinking is to create the kind of environment needed to drive performance. One has to strive to high performance and performance based systems and one of the ways we want to do that is to introduce the medal bonus starting at the 2015 Pan Am Games," Lewis said. "It's a commitment I intend to honour while we continue to work on other elements

The former Harvard rugby player said for now the bonus will be strictly for medals and will include individual, relays and team sports.

"It is a starting position and we will review the quantum as we go along...I can say already say that the Olympics will definitely have a medal bonus higher than Pan Ams," he said.

Lewis added the incentive is part of the 10 Olympic golds by 2024 initiative. "I think it is very exciting in the context of what it does it signals to the athlete we are serious about creating a high performance environment," Lewis said.

Lewis added it is part of a number of other initiatives the TTOC is currently undertaking or discussing to undertake including another developing Sports Science and Sports Medicine Service network of sports medicine people, athletic trainers, physiotherapists, and a bio mechanic; the pursuit of a local Olympic Training Centre (discussions ongoing with the SPORTT company, UTT etc) in consultation with a high performance centre like the Michael Johnson Performance Centre in Texas; and internships and career placement programmes for athletes modelled after the IOC Athlete Career Programme.

"Obviously we can't solve all the problems immediately but we want to move the bar higher and what we are saying to the athlete is we are creating an incentive, To me the most important resource is the T&T athlete, at this particular point, and we are very much focused on high performance and creating that environment and opportunities for the athletes," Lewis said.

Lewis added it is all part of a "strategic, structured and systemic approach" the TTOC is adopting as the TTOC looks "to impact the athletes in a very tangible way"

"We can't continue to put so much burden on athletes, If we cannot be totally professional, we still have the facilities and resources where we can provide the athletes with support services they need and if we can create performance based incentives, create the opportunities for the athletes, it will be developing a win-win for the country, for the IOC, the NSO and corporate Trinidad and Tobago. With the Rio Olympics 14 months away, it is also important we need a sense of urgency to continue to push for these initiatives to come on stream as we look to Rio, Tokyo 2020 and beyond," Lewis concluded.

the NGC-Sagicor National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Open Track and Field Championship men’s 400 metres final, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on Saturday. Reigning Olympic men’s javelin champion Keshorn Walcott and 2013 IAAF World Championship men’s 400 metres hurdles gold medallist Jehue Gordon are among 35 athletes chosen to fly the Red, White and Black at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Also among the 19 men selected on the Trinidad and Tobago track and field team are national 100m champion Keston Bledman and quartermiler Machel Cedenio.

Nineteen-year-old Cedenio crossed the finish line first in the NGC-Sagicor National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) Open Track and Field Championship men’s 400m final, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on Saturday. However, he was subsequently disqualified for running in Jarrin Solomon’s lane. Runner-up Renny Quow was upgraded to gold, while Solomon was promoted to silver.

Cedenio and Quow have been named to run the individual 400m event at the July 10-26 Pan Am Games. Solomon joins them in a six-man 4x400m relay pool that also includes 2012 Olympic 400m bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon, Kyle Greaux and Jehue Gordon.

Bledman and Marcus Duncan will run the individual 100m event in Toronto, and are also part of the 4x100m relay pool, The other athletes selected for the sprint relay are Rondel Sorrillo, Emmanuel Callender, sprint hurdler Mikel Thomas, and Dan-Neil Telesford.

Greaux and Sorrillo will run in the 200m event.

Walcott’s older brother, Elton Walcott has been selected for the men’s triple jump. And Quincy Wilson will represent T&T in the discus.

Missing from the Pan Am Games men’s team are three-time Olympic medallist Richard “Torpedo” Thompson and quartermiler Deon Lendore. According to a press release from the NAAA, yesterday, Thompson will “sit out the rest of the 2015 track season due to a recurring injury which has been interfering with his day to day training.

‘This will give him more time to recuperate,” the release continued, “and prepare for the Olympics in Rio 2016.” On Saturday, Thompson competed in the 100m semis, but struggled with a knee injury. He qualified for the final, but did not face the starter. Lendore is also injured, and did not compete at the Championships.

Michelle-Lee Ahye finished second to Kelly-Ann Baptiste in the women’s 100m final, but was not at full fitness, and has opted out of the Pan Am Games. NAAA public relations officer Peter Samuel told the Express, yesterday, “Ahye has a hamstring grade two muscle strain”.

Baptiste and Semoy Hackett will do battle for T&T in the Pan Am Games women’s 100m dash.

Daniel aims for Pan Am glory
Thursday, July 2 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Roger Daniel T&T rifle shooter aiming high

VETERAN TRINIDAD and Tobago rifle shooter Roger Daniel is bracing for the challenge he will expect at the Pan American Games, scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada, from July 10-26.

At the 2011 edition in Guadalajara, Mexico, the 45-year-old Daniel earned a silver medal in the men’s 10-metre air pistol and, this month, he will be seeking another piece of silverware, in his third Pan Am Games.

During an interview on Monday, the Defence Force standout said, “this time around, I know it’s even more challenging because the rules in the sport (have) changed.

“But I believe this time, a gold is the goal. I feel more confident, I feel stronger, much more secure in the sport,” he added.

The 10-metre air pistol will take place on July 12 at the Pan Am Shooting Centre in Innisfil.

The event consisted of two rounds — a qualifier and a final. In the qualifier, each shooter fired 60 shots with an air pistol at 10 metres distance. Scores for each shot were in increments of one, with a maximum score of 10.

The top eight shooters in the qualifying round moved on to the final round. There, they fired an additional 10 shots. These shots scored in increments of .1, with a maximum score of 10.9. The total score from all 70 shots was used to determine final ranking.

Daniel commented, “the way it has changed, you’ll definitely have to increase (your) training and muscular endurance because it’s more crowd-orientated. No longer it’s points going forward to the finals, now it’s more concentration, it’s a longer time.”

Stating that his preparations has been “very good”, Daniel does not see himself retiring from competitive rifle shooting anytime soon.

“The sport affords you to go as long as you can hold the unit, really and truly,” he said. “Look Joe Costa just won in the United States and he’s aged 50. So he has won the World Championship twice, back-to- back.

“So I’m not putting it past (me). My sport allows me to go at that age and beyond, so if I’m afforded to go, I will do it,” he ended.

Women ‘Soca Warriors’ coach bracing for Pan Am challenge
By JOEL BAILEY Thursday, July 2 2015 (T&T Newsday)

TRINIDAD and Tobago women Soca Warriors coach Ross Russell is bracing for the challenge which he will face at the Pan American Games, which will take place in Toronto, Canada from July 10-26.

The women Soca Warriors will be facing Argentina on July 11, Colombia on July 14 and Mexico on July 18 in Group A action - all matches will be contested at the Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium.

Group B will comprise hosts Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica and Ecuador, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semi-finals on July 22. The final is carded for July 25.

Interviewed on Monday, Russell asked how he felt entering his first major competition as the head of the women’s team, he said: “In coaching I don’t like to say scary but it’s a bit scary because you don’t know what to expect, because we haven’t had a full international to play against anybody,” he admitted.

“It’s just the (local) clubs we play and we roll over them, so their confidence is high.

“Going into a tournament like this, playing against Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, to be over-confident could be a let-down,” added the former Defence Force tactician.

“Most of them played against Mexico already and they have that under their belt. I think the girls will do well.”

Russell took over the team a couple months ago from the American Randy Waldrum, who was unable to guide the team to a spot in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which concludes this weekend in Canada.

Russell have kept most of the players, who featured in the World Cup campaign in his 18-member squad.

Regarding expectations for his team, Russell, the ex- Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper and Under-20 coach, remarked, “I’ll keep it close to my chest.”

The women Soca Warriors squad is: Maylee Attin-Johnson (capt), Kennya Cordner, Tasha St Louis, Karyn Forbes, Kimika Forbes, Rhea Belgrave, Janine Francois, Arin King, Patrice Superville, Dernelle Mascall, Mariah Shade, Khadidra Debesette, Ayanna Russell, Ahkeela Mollon, Brianna Ryce, Shalette Alexander, Lauryn Hutchinson, Shenelle Henry.

Pan Am athletes get send-off from Guardian Life
By JOEL BAILEY Wednesday, July 1 2015 (T&T Newsday)

MEMBERS OF the Trinidad and Tobago contingent, who will feature at the forthcoming Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada from July 10-26, got an official “send-off” from the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) on Monday afternoon at the Guardian Life of the Caribbean Atrium, Westmoorings.

In attendance were members of the national women’s football team, 2011 Pan Am Games medallist Roger Daniel (rifle shooting), boxer Chimere Taylor, as well as officials from badminton, golf and hockey.

Canada Ambassador to TT Gerard Latulippe was also in attendance, along with former TTOC president Douglas Camacho and the team’s chef de mission Diane Henderson. Latulippe noted in his address, “my country of participation (TT) will be so well-represented in Toronto. “I’m looking forward to hear your national anthem during the Games, with some of you on the podium,” he said. “There will be over 10,000 athletes and teams from 41 countries.

“We’re expecting 40-50,000 visitors to Toronto,” added the Canadian Ambassador. “While sports will be at the core of the Games, it’s also a celebration of cultures and various festivals and activities are planned to showcase the vibrant culture of the participating countries.”

He ended, “I wish you a very successful competition and I hope and I pray that the next time I see you is here in Trinidad and Tobago to celebrate the medals that you’re going to (get), and hopefully, a gold medal.”In her address to the athletes present, Henderson said, “(when you) leave here, some of the values of Olympism, we want you to be guided and you remember who you are representing.

“Part of the principles of Olympism being holding the policies of body, mind and spirit,” she continued. “We hope that we will carry that through.”

She added, “be mindful of the social media and your personal brand. You are now going to an international Games and how you act and portray yourselves in the social media will be a reflection of your team, the TTOC as well as your country.”

Bledman, Baptiste, Walcott and Borel head TT Pan Am athletics squad
Wednesday, July 1 2015 (T&T Newsday)

TRINIDAD AND Tobago can expect to medal in both track and field events at this month’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada. Yesterday, the National Association of Athletic Administrations (NAAA) released the final squad, which includes 20 male and 16 female athletes, as well as nine team officials.

Heading the list of gold medal contenders is Keshorn Walcott; the Olympic Men’s Javelin champion has found form, twice breaking his own national record during at successive Diamond League meets in Europe last month. Neither of the two men who have outdone the Toco-born athlete this year will compete in Toronto, since one hails from Kenya and the other from the Czech Republic. TT’s other outstanding medal hope in field competition is the evergreen Cleopatra Borel, who has also been consistent at her discipline this season.

As always, the red, white and black is expected to feature prominently in the sprints. The loss of three-time Olympic medalist Richard Thompson to injury notwithstanding, the sprint relay team will fancy its chances of mounting the prize rostrum, with Keston Bledman, Rondel Sorillo, Emmanuel Callender and Marcus Duncan among a squad of six registered for the event.

Bledman and Duncan will carry the hopes of TT in the 100 metres, while the Tobago-born duo of Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Semoy Hackett will contest the women’s equivalent.

Baptiste appears to be in excellent shape, destroying the field in the final with a 10.84 second run at last weekend’s National Open Championship, while Bledman’s time of 9.86 in the men’s final underlined the fact that he should not be underestimated in Toronto. Despite the fact that Renny Quow won the 400 metres at the Open, it is the younger Machel Cedenio who has clocked the fastest times this season. They will both contest the Men’s 400 metres and spearhead TT’s bid for precious metal in the mile relay. Jarrin Solomon and Olympic bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon will be the other runners in the relay quartet. The other athletes may not be as well-known internationally, but they will all be striving to ensure that when the games are over, their names will be on the lists of finals, and possibly also on the medals listing.

George Commissiong is the team manager and Ian Hypolite is the head coach. The games will run from July 10-26.

Bledman, Baptiste lead athletics to Pan Am Games
Published: Wednesday, July 1, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Keston Bledman were the first names to appear on the list of 35 athletes announced yesterday to represent this country at the Pan American Games, which takes place in Toronto, Canada, from July 10-26.

The final team was revealed two days following the end of the NAAA National Open Championships, which was the last opportunity for national athletes to be considered for the Pan Am Games.

Baptiste and Bledman were among the stand-outs over the weekend with both securing gold medals in the respective women and men’s 100m finals with relative ease.

However, not making the final team was Richard Thompson, who also missed out on the last Pan American Games, four years ago.

Following, a slow finish (10.40 seconds) in the semifinal, Thompson opted of the final and later revealed that a nagging injury in the left knee was the cause.

According to the NAAA, “Yesterday (Monday), Richard Thompson, along with many other athletes were screened by a medical team led by Dr Anyl Gopeesingh. After the screening a decision was taken between Dr Gopeesingh and Mr Thompson for him (Thompson) to sit out the rest of the 2015 track season due to a recurring injury which has been interfering with his day to day training.”

The NAAA noted that Thompson’s absence from the Pan Am Games will “give him more time to recuperate and prepare for the Olympics in Rio 2016.”

Though without Thompson, T&T will be represented by its fastest runner this year, Keston Bledman, the first named athlete on the roster.

Bledman, who stormed through the semifinal, recaptured his national gold medal in 9.86 seconds, a mark that equalled his personal best. He will enter the Pan Am men’s 100m event, while T&T is also set to take part in the 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400m, 110m and 400m hurdles races, the field events in triple jump, high jump, discus throw, javelin, shot put and the multi-event heptathlon.

Emmanuel Callender and Cleopatra Borel, the lone two track and field athletes to secured medals for T&T at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico, were both included in the roster. Four years ago, Callender took bronze in the men’s 100m final, while Borel won her second ever Pan Am medal, a silver in the women’s shot put, in which she threw a personal best 18.46m.

On Sunday, Borel captured her tenth senior national shot put gold medal throwing 18.46m on her best attempt.

Callender finished fourth in the men’s 100m final on Saturday, clocking 10.21 seconds. He was the only T&T representative in the 100m final at last Pan Am Games. Darrel Brown also challenged the event but failed past the preliminary stage.

Meanwhile, Keshorn Walcott, who reset his national record twice in recent weeks, set a championship record with an 84.84m throw on Sunday. He has been included on the team and will contest his second Pan Am Games.

The up and coming 20-year-old Shakeil Waithe, who placed second in the men’s javelin on Sunday with a personal best 77.30m, will make his Pan Am Games debut.

Calypso Stickmen, Mexico draw 3-3 in Pan Am warm-up

This country’s senior men’s hockey team continued its build-up towards the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada later this month with 3-3 draw against host Mexico in Guanajuato, Mexico on Tuesday to conclude a four-match tour.

Getting the goals for the T&T squad was Defence Force forward Mickell Pierre, inform Paragon player Kiel Murray and Courts Malvern teenager Tariq Marcano.

With the draw, T&T ended the four match series which also included Central American and Caribbean Games champions Cuba, with one and three defeats.

On Monday, T&T, beaten by Cuba 6-1 in the CAC final last November suffered a 5-2 loss against the same with Pierre and Murray the players on target in the loss for the T&T.

The other loss for the Darren Cowie-led world 29th ranked T&T, was 1-0 to Mexico, despite having a number of chances which included a Murray penalty-stroke that was saved by the Mexican custodian.

When the three-team warm-up series flicked off on Friday last, T&T and Courts Malvern goalkeeper Andrey Rocke pulled off a number of saves in the penalty shoot-out to earn his team victory after a 1-1 draw with Cuba at the end of regulation time with Murray scoring the decisive penalty.

Speaking just before the team left Mexico for their pre-Pan Am Games camp in Canada, national coach Francis said the Mexico camp was very beneficial to his team.

A former national goalkeeper, Francis said, “The camp was very productive and we were able to play high quality matches where they were able to see the speed of the game at the international level and we were adapted to it with great effect.”

He added, “It is also noteworthy that we have some very young players and they also adapted pretty well to the level. We are still in the process of working on a lot of stuff tactically and using players in different roles and positions to see how they will react to match situations at the Pan American Games and it was really great to see how they responded.”

Yesterday, the T&T squad departed Mexico for Toronto for another camp before entering the Games Village on July.

For the tri-nation series in Mexico, T&T was without Australian-based duo, Akim Toussaint and Stefan Mouttet as well as Aidan De Gannes with the reserve trio of Lyndell Byer, Teague Marcano and Jordan Vieira making the trip,

But barring any injuries to any member of the team, Byer, Marcano (Teague) and Vieira will return to T&T tomorrow with Toussaint, Mouttet and De Gannes joining the team in Canada.

For the eight-team Pan American Games, T&T will be without injured standout and most capped player, Kwandwane Browne, who will serve as an assistant to Francis will campaign in Pool A against Argentina, Cuba and USA.

Browne’s Olympic Games hopes and T&T chances of a medal finish at the Pan American Games suffered a blow early last month when he sustained a torn achilles tendon left leg injury, forcing the 18-year national team veteran with over 300-appearance to his name, out of the tournament in Canada.

However, having completed his surgery and started his recovery which will take between six and nine months, Browne, the current England Under-21 assistant coach and coach for National League Premier Division’s Canterbury, will now serve the T&T men’s team in the role as an assistant coach to Francis.

He has represented T&T at four Commonwealth Games as well as four Pan American Games and three Pan American Cup, and in 2012/13 won the award for England Hockey High Performance Coach of the Season.

His last competitive outing for T&T at the FIH World League Round Two qualifiers in San Diego, California in March.

Squad

T&T men: Stefan Mouttet, Akim Toussaint, Dillet Gilkes, Aidan De Gannes, Ishmael Campbell, Darren Cowie, Shaquille Daniel, Solomon Eccles, Kristien Emmanuel, Tariq Marcano, Che Modeste, Kiel Murray, Mickell Pierre, Jordan Reynos, Andrey Rocke, Christopher Scipio.

Technical staff: Glenn “Fido” Francis (coach), Kwandwane Browne (assistant coach), Kirth Davis (manager), Nicholas Baldeosingh (videographer)

Taylor looking forward to Pan Am debut
Saturday, July 4 2015 (T&T Newsday)

CHIMERE TAYLOR is looking forward to making her Pan American Games debut at Toronto, Canada, when she competes in the women’s light heavyweight category.

The soft-spoken boxer, in a recent interview, admitted, “It feels pretty good knowing I’m the first female to qualify for the Pan Am Games.”

The Games will be staged from July 10 to 26.

Taylor will be expected to take to the ring at the General Motors Centre in the quarter-final phase on July 20, with the semi-finals set for July 21 and the final on July 24.

She noted that her preparation phase “has been coming along pretty good” and, under the guidance of her coach Reynold Cox, she has been focusing a lot on sparring.

“We were in Mexico a couple of weeks ago,” she said.

“We had training with other athletes as well.” About her readiness for the Games, Taylor pointed out, “mentally I’m 100 percent but we’re still working on a lot of stuff that we probably missed on.”

Being the first female TT boxer to compete in the Pan Am Games, Taylor said, “it feels good because I did (well) to reach this level, and I’ll continue going.”

She is the only TT pugilist — male or female — to be named in the contingent of 180 (athletes and officials) for the Games.

T&T women fly out to Pan Am games
...Sancho’s intervention saves day for footballers

Published: Tuesday, July 7, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

T&T Women Soca Warriors off to Pan Am Games

Minister of Sport Brent Sancho says the threat by some T&T senior women’s team players not to board a flight bound for Canada yesterday would have been realised had it not been for his intervention.

In a telephone interview, Sancho said he convinced the players to take the flight after giving them the assurance that he would look into issues, some of which were made public by one of the players, Kennya Cordner, who took to social media over the weekend in a critical post directed to the T&T Football Association (TTFA).

On Saturday, Cordner posted the following on Facebook: “So on Monday 6th of July I would not be going to Canada without any stipend this is ridiculous now I would let ppl know wat alyuh about TTFA because this is not fair to us, why must the men be in comfort while we suffer not any more I'm so fed up of you all treating us like this no more.”

Then, on Sunday, a day before the team was scheduled to depart for Canada, Cordner posted on the same forum: “As I lay in my bed and think back! You know it was never about the money when coming to play for our country, we always used to go and play and fight for the, but is the Constance (sic) disrespect from the TTFA I cannot take. Few months ago we brought this country together, we change the face of women's football but yet still we are treated like we are no-body why must that be?

It's unfair to us look we have pan am games not even a practice game why because we not worth it? Am asking you TTFA. Going back to wen Coach Randy put up the Twitter post and you all said things would be better for the women's but yet still the lies keep coming smh. Ladies it's about time we stop take the disrespect because we are human not robots. I would always b happy to represent my country, but wen we are being disrespected I would let ppl know.

With these concerns, some players threatened to boycott the event. Sancho said he received a call the night before from one of the players, which brought some of the issues to his attention. He said he wants the TTFA to be “transparent and open.” “They have to let us know what happened.”

Sancho said he could not understand what the issues were in terms of match fees and preparation for the Pan Am Games since the TTFA recently received “Gold Cup money” from Concacaf. “The federation got money from Concacaf for preparation for the Gold Cup and airfare but we (Government) are paying for airfare,” Sancho said.

However, in a subsequent interview, TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips said the Minister may have been mistaken when it came to the figures. “We did not receive $100,000 from Concacaf (for the Gold Cup). We received around $33,000, which did go towards the two Pan Am teams.” He said the association “received an advance” from Concacaf in the absence of Ministry subventions which would have gone toward the Pan American Games.

In terms of the women team’s preparation for the Games, Phillips noted that the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL)  featured all national women players and allowed them to prepare through a number of friendly matches, including one against a WPL XI.

The women’s team is scheduled to kick off the account at the Pan American Games on Saturday with a clash against Argentina and will play Colombia and Mexico on July 14 and 18, respectively, at the preliminary stage. The men will face Uruguay (July 13), Paraguay (July 17) and Mexico (July 21).

Funding woe$ again
By JOEL BAILEY Tuesday, July 7 2015 (T&T Newsday)

IN A near-virtual repeat of the issue which gained nationwide, and even global condemnation last October, members of the national women football team, dubbed the “Women Soca Warriors”, yesterday threatened to boycott their flight, and henceforth miss the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada due to lack of stipends and per diems for the 18-member squad.

Nearly a year ago, then team coach Randy Waldrum highlighted the fact that the players arrived in Houston, Texas, United States, for the CONCACAF Women’s Championships, with only US$500 as spending money.

Over the weekend, veteran striker Kennya Cordner took to Facebook to lament the lack of financial assistance towards the team, particularly from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), as the respective players were each given US$600 as stipend for the July 10-26 Games.

Cordner, on her Facebook page, posted on Saturday, “so on Monday 6th of July I would not be going to Canada without any stipend .This is ridiculous. Now I would let people know what allyuh about TTFA, because this is not fair to us. Why must the men be in comfort while we suffer? Not any more, I’m so fed up of you all treating us like this no more.”

On Sunday, Cordner, again on her Facebook page, commented, “as I lay in my bed and think back! You know it was never about the money when coming to play for our country, we always used to go and play and fight for the red, white and black.

“But it is the constant disrespect from the TTFA I cannot take .A few months ago we brought this country together, we changed the face of women’s football but yet still we are treated like we are nobody why must that be? It’s unfair to us, look we have Pan Am Games and not even a practice game. Why because we not worth it? Ladies it’s about time we stop taking the disrespect because we are human not robots,” she declared.

Contacted for a comment, Sports Minister Brent Sancho stated that he was informed of the developments on Sunday night. “But I assured them that I would have discussions with the (TTFA) with relation to it,” he said. “So they eventually decided that they were going to play.”

The Sports Minister emphasised, “my main concern is that we didn’t have a second Houston scenario. I wanted to make sure I do everything in my power, to make sure that they got on the flight and represented the country. I must admit I am a bit disappointed that everything has come to (this).”

Most of the players on the current TT team were on the same squad who struggled last year to receive financial aid from the TTFA.

And Sancho pointed out, “the Ministry have gone above and beyond. We’ve been housing these players since the start of the WPL (Women’s Premier League). The question is what is happening with the TTFA. They keep finding themselves in this situation.”

Concerning the players’ threat to skip the Pan Am Games as a mark of protest, the Sports Minister noted, “a lot of them were frustrated that, despite all that happened the last time, they’ve come back to the same juncture - it’s really heart-wrenching. We’re hoping to have a conversation with the (TTFA) this week so they can explain what is really going on.

“I have met with them about five or six times over the past two months, and they have not once put in any sort of request for the women’s team.”

However, Sheldon Phillips, general secretary of the TTFA, described the entire episode as “a case of misinformation.”

He admitted, “we were able to resolve the issue. Currently, the situation is, the Ministry has told us that the funds they said were available, we didn’t have access to it. We had decided to call upon some emergency funding from CONCACAF in order to get partial payments of per diems to the players that were leaving for the Pan Am Games. We hope to get the funds that the Ministry said that were available for us several weeks ago.”

Asked how much funds were supplied to the players, Phillips replied, “the funding for that really comes from the TTOC (TT Olympic Committee).

“We are able to, from the TTFA funds, commit to US$600 per player, and the remaining money, what we have budgeted from the subvention, from the allocation from the Ministry of Sport.”

About the players’ proposed plan to boycott the Games, Phillips remarked, “we have heard that was an utterance and we got some phone calls from players alerting us to the sentiments of some of the players. It’s something we don’t want to see materialise so we took steps to resolve the matter.”

‘Clash of the Queens’ lauded
By JOEL BAILEY Tuesday, July 7 2015 (T&T Newsday)

‘Clash of the Queens’ between T&T’s senior netball team and Maylee Attin-Johnson led Women Soca Warriors

The physical fusion of Sunday’s ‘Clash of the Queens’ event between Trinidad and Tobago’s World Championship-bound senior netball team and the Maylee Attin-Johnson led Women Soca Warriors, is being viewed as a major developmental stepping stone for both sporting disciplines as they conclude preparations ahead of a hectic international campaign.

This inaugural event was held at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo, as a special fund-raiser for both teams who would be representing the red, white and black at the World Championships (August 7-16/ Australia) and Pan American Games (July 10-26/ Canada). And even though the Calypso Girls won the friendly encounter against the female footballers 58-9, Trinidad and Tobago Netball Association public relations officer Lynette Duncan is hailing this initiative as a unique way of uniting different sports under one umbrella.

“To me it was a great idea getting the two teams coming together towards the common purpose and goal of raising funds to assist them on their upcoming tournaments. It was very nice to see both sports unite under one banner with togetherness. It’s a great way moving forward as this is the first time that both sporting disciplines are working together,” said Duncan.

Both teams have equally split the money earned from Sunday’s event in an effort to offset costs ahead of both tourneys.

The Women Warriors departed TT yesterday en route to Toronto where they will begin their final training sessions before the start of Pan Am.

After both competitions conclude, the netballers will suit up in football gear to return the favour, and square off against the Attin-Johnson’s unit in another friendly encounter.

“We are splitting the monies earned 50/50,” added Duncan. “It was well attended. This time the footballers clashed with the netballers on court so when they come back, the netball girls will put on their football boots and rematch the Women Soca Warriors in a friendly to keep both sporting fraternities close and united. This is going to be an ongoing event and we hope to include more sporting disciplines. For a first time initiative, it was well executed.”

While she was pleased with the assistance from the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago and other institutions, Duncan noted that they would like to get more involved in attaining funds by themselves.

Money for medals
Pan Am athletes to be rewarded for success in Canada

Pan Am athletes to be rewarded for success in Canada

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), in an effort to give its athletes extra motivation to perform at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada, has announced medal bonuses which will form part of the TTOC's 10 or more Olympic gold medals athlete welfare and preparation programme.

TTOC president Brian Lewis set a national objective to achieve eight more Olympic gold medals by the 2024 Summer Games and for the first time in its history the TTOC will have a medal bonus which will see athletes getting US$3,000 for winning a gold medal, US$2,000 for a silver and US$1,000 for bronze in individual competition at the Toronto Games which start on Friday.

In the relay events, teams will get US$9,000 for gold, US$6,000 for silver and US$3,000 for bronze.

In respect of team sports, US$1,500 will be rewarded per athlete for a gold, US$1,000 for silver and US$750 for bronze.

The TTOC is determined to take the necessary steps and decisions in its effort to create the environment that will assist the athletes in striving to achieve medal winning objectives.

TTOC vice-president Dr Ian Hypolite feels that the introduction of the medal bonuses could be a very worthwhile initiative.

He said that while athletes are already motivated to do well, the incentives will let them know their efforts are appreciated and will be like the icing on the cake.

“Anything that serves to incentivise our athletes is obviously welcome,” Hypolite told the Express. “It is a bold initiative and principle in the cause in an attempt to incorporate corporate Trinidad in the process.”

“There are a lot of expectations surrounding our athletes but I think the public needs to understand that athletic success is not a give and that support is always vital. The incentives are one thing but what the TTOC is really calling upon is for corporate Trinidad and Tobago to support our athletes,” he explained.

“Motivation is a complex thing. Many athletes are already intrinsically motivated however some extrinsic motivation in the form of a reward can always be like the icing on the cake so to speak,” Hypolite added.

“I don't think there are any athletes who are going to say they are going to run for the money. They are already motivated to do well but I think the rewards will be an indication of some level of appreciation for the athletes' commitment towards Trinidad and Tobago and I think that is also a major consideration,” he said.

According to a TTOC press release, “the introduction of medal bonuses is an essential component of the 10 or more Olympic Gold medals athlete welfare and preparation programme.

“In pursuit of its strategic goals and objectives the TTOC acknowledges the support of its corporate partners: bpTT, Guardian Group, Scotiabank, Adidas, Lisa Communications and NLCB. It is an exciting time for the TTOC. Rio 2016 is just around the corner. Pan Am Toronto will get underway this week. Lots of challenges but it's exciting,” the release stated.

Pan Am medal prosepct: Keshorn Walcott

From this weekend, another slew of medals will be on offer for athletes and teams from the Pan American region. The question that comes to my mind is how large a share can the Trinidad and Tobago contingent reasonably be expected to win?

Some 115 competitors in 14 disciplines, inclusive of men’s and women’s football and hockey teams will, in principle at least, be aiming to mount the medal rostrum in Toronto, Canada. I have to stress “in principle” because the majority of that group will not get near the podium. Check the history.

Since these regional games began in 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, T&T have come away with no more than seven medals at a time—in Winnipeg, Canada in 1967, Cali, Colombia 1971 and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2003. And only eight times in the 16 editions of Pan Am have T&T won gold, and five of those golds have come from cyclists alone.

Bare figures do not tell the whole story of course. For instance, while competition might not be open to the whole world, in some disciplines like track and field, the quality will truly be world class given that the Caribbean and North America currently dominate the globe in a number of events, especially the sprints.

And with a population just past one million, it would be like waiting for donkeys to fly to expect that TRI could ever be above USA on a Pan Am medals table.

So what is reasonable to expect? Not 10 gold medals. That ambitious target of Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee president Brian Lewis is not supposed to bear fruit until 2024.

Ten medals then?

Well let’s see where those ten might possibly come from.

From track and field I can see four, possibly five.

Right now the 400 metres pool is deep. Machel Cedenio and Deon Lendore have been among the best quarter-milers in the world this year; and T&T can also call on people with big games medals like Berlin World Championships 2009 bronze medallist Renny Quow and London Olympics 2012 bronze man Lalonde Gordon, in addition to Jarrin Solomon who is also an Olympic bronze medallist in the 4x400 relay and World hurdles champ Jehue Gordon is a relay option.

T&T got 4x400 bronze at both last year’s Commonwealth and World Relay Games, so a top three placing in Toronto should be expected; and should things go smoothly, gold could be the colour.

On form, Cedenio, the teen sensation is a candidate for a top three 400 finish also, should he pace himself well through the rounds.

So that takes care of two medals.

I can also see the evergreen Cleopatra Borel collecting another top three placing in the shot put. The older she gets the steadier her arm seems to grow. The current Sportswoman of the Year collected gold at the CAC Games and silver at Commonwealth in 2014 and was also a silver medallist in the last Pan Am event in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011. Borel’s 2015 best so far of 19.26 metres is markedly better than the 18.46m that got her silver four years ago; so another medal of high shade is a definite possibility.

Three down, seven to go.

Here’s a fourth: I expect something solid from Keshorn Walcott also. His progress since his London 2012 gold strike has not been smooth. But his form this year seems to be on the improve. His re-setting of the national record in Birmingham last month was proof positive. The Pan Am competition, devoid of the high quality Europeans should be the ideal stage for the Olympic champ to gain needed confidence ahead of the World Championships by winning another significant title.

Jehue Gordon could also get a Worlds boost with a podium finish in the hurdles which should not be beyond him at this stage.

That’s five.

I’m less certain about a medal for Kelly Ann Baptiste in the women’s 100m given the strength in depth of the Jamaican and American camps. But her form since her return to competition this year certainly does not rule out a top three finish. A lot could depend on which athletes show up for these games.

In the swimming pool, it would be a surprise if George Bovell leaves Toronto empty-handed. We are talking about an elite level, world class performer who regularly holds his own with the world’s best in the 50 free. In 2003 he left Santo Domingo laden down with gold and silver. It was the year before his historic Athens 200 individual medley bronze. His history often does not neatly repeat itself so neatly. But even if the effort in Toronto is not followed up by Rio precious metal, big George will do his part at Pan Am.

I’ll be conservative and put him down for just one medal; that would make seven.

Roger Daniel took good aim in 2011 and got silver in the 10m air pistol competition. Possibly he could get another, or maybe bronze on the range.

That would be eight, but I’m stretching now. Don’t see hockey for football bagging anything but goals. With few exceptions, T&T’s record in team competition at this level is not good.

Cycling is another story. Sprinter Nijsane Phillip got bronze four years ago to keep up the sports rich Pan Am tradition. But the years since his promising fourth place finish at the 2012 Olympiad have not been as productive as he might have hoped. An individual medal is not a certainty this time, in either the sprint or the keirin. A medal in the team sprint looks even more remote for Quincy Alexander, Justin Roberts and Jude Codrington.

So I’m stuck at a shaky eight. But even that would be breaking new ground for T&T.

At least the next couple weeks will help president Lewis and his committee members to gauge how much more work needs to be put into their 10-gold plan.

T&T cyclists ready for Pan Am
Published on Jul 8, 2015, 11:08 pm AST (T&T Express)

Njisane Phillip, TTO cyclist & Olympian

The top Trinidad and Tobago cyclists will continue a busy year as they prepare for the 2015 Pan American Games, which will be hosted in Toronto, Canada. A small six-member team has qualified for the big meet, and will be participating in both the sprint and endurance events during the Games.

The members of the team are all abroad currently, preparing for their competition which starts next Thursday, July 16. The team includes London Olympian Njisane Phillip, Quincy Alexander, Justin Roberts, Jude Codrington as the sprinters, while Varun Maharajh is the sole endurance rider and Emile Abraham will participate in the road race.

Rigtech Sonics clubmates Phillip and Maharajh are both based in Pennslyvania, USA at the moment, while Alexander, Codrington and Roberts are in Colorado. Emile Abraham is in Atlanta.

The T&T cycling contingent will be competing in the team sprint event via Alexander, Codrington and Roberts. Phillip will compete only in the individual events which will include the match sprint and keirin. His local rival Alexander will also be in the sprint. Elite class endurance rider Maharahj will contest the men's omnium.

T&T's cyclists qualified for the Pan American Games based on the results from the last two Pan American Cycling Championships held in 2013 and 2014, as well as results from the CAC Games last year. This year's team will be headed by Des Dickie, team coach, while David Francis will serve as the team manager. Christopher Pitt is the team's mechanic.

The Games as a whole will commence tomorrow and will conclude on July 26. The cycling competition runs from July 16-19.
