Young Nixon progressing at Union.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

Forward Jerren Nixon, the 16-year-old son of former T&T striker Jerren Nixon is reportedly making rapid progress at the academy of American Major League Soccer club Philladelphia Union.

Nixon, currently with the national U-17 team at the Concacaf qualifiers in Honduras, has been a regular in the Union start team.

He recently scored the match-winner in the U-16 team’s win over DC United in the second leg of the Generation Adidas Cup East regionals. The Union advanced to the finals of that tournament in Dallas in April.

Young Nixon has made six appearances (four starts) and scored three goals in his first season with the Union Academy. He played in Lilburn, Georgia with Gwinnett Soccer Association before joining the Academy and was born in Zurich, Switzerland, when his father was playing for FC Zürich.

Nixon accompanied his father at the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup and had the opportunity to witness the T&T training sessions and interact with the current senior players.

The older Nixon’s career included playing time at FC St Gallen and FC Zurich in Switzerland and also at Scotland’s Dundee United where he is still remembered for his blistering pace at the club between 1993-1995 during which time he won a Scottish Cup medal. Nixon also represented T&T at every level including the U-17s.

Another US-based player Noah Powder, who plays for the New York Red Bulls U-16s, is also with the T&T U-17 team at this time.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Philadelphia Union Academy forward Jerren Nixon verbally commits to University of Virginia
By Matt Ralph (brotherlygame.com)

Philadelphia Union Academy forward Jerren "J.J." Nixon has verbally committed to play college soccer at the University of Virginia, joining teammate Raheem Taylor-Parkes in the 2016 recruiting class for the defending national champions.

Nixon, 17, scored 5 goals in 20 appearances and 7 starts for the U-16 team in his first season with the Union Academy last year. One of his biggest goals was a game-winner he scored for the U-16s in a win over DC United in the Generation Adidas Cup regionals. Another highlight for Nixon on the year was competing with the Trinidad & Tobago U-17 team in CONCACAF World Cup qualification in February.

The son of former Trinidad & Tobago striker Jerren Nixon, he played in Lilburn, Georgia with Gwinnett Soccer Association before joining the Union Academy and was born in Zurich, Switzerland when his dad was playing for FC Zürich.

Nixon told TopDrawerSoccer he chose Virginia because he felt a personal connection with the staff. "I was very impressed with the school and the first-class education that I can receive there," he said.

Nixon is one of several Academy players heading to ACC programs in 2016. Auston Trusty and Jack Skahan are verbally committed to North Carolina, Michael Swift to Clemson and Joseph DeZart to Wake Forest.

This player looking enterprising. Taking it to the opposition.  These are the type of players T&T needs to foster and cultivate.

I don't understand why somebody who has a son with a European passport move to the  U S A if he wants his son to develop into a football player.

It's easier to make the USA team.

I sure University of Virginia don't have a "football" major.

Although you have a point, perhaps his father wants him to have an education.
Shaka Hislop had a British passport and it worked for him.

Trinidad and Tobago bond attracts Jerren Nixon to grad transfer spot with Stony Brook Men's Soccer
By Adam Rubin (stonybrookathletics.com)

Jerren Nixon was born in Switzerland while his father played professional soccer for FC Zürich and later Yverdon-Sport and FC St. Gallen. And his earliest memories are of practicing with his father at the 30,000-seat Letzigrund Stadium in the country's largest city.

Now, after his own soccer career has taken him to the Philadelphia Union Academy and then the University of Virginia, Nixon has joined the Stony Brook men's soccer team as a graduate transfer with an eye toward a professional soccer career of his own in Europe.

Nixon, a 6-foot-5 forward who will pursue an advanced graduate certificate in coaching at Stony Brook, felt comfortable completing his career with the Seawolves in part because of the program's well-established embrace of his Trinidadian roots.

He joined his new teammates for their first spring practice on Tuesday night at the Stony Brook Indoor Training Center.

Nixon played alongside new teammate Kori Cupid on Trinidad's U-20 national team. They are two of four players from that nation on Stony Brook's roster for the spring 2021 season, along with Rondell Payne and Twon Grannum. Head coach Ryan Anatol shares that heritage as well.

"Kori told me a lot of good things about Stony Brook," said Nixon, who had never been to the campus in person until driving up from Atlanta in mid-January. "He said it's a really good school and nice environment."

Nixon's father, Jerren Sr., represented Trinidad and Tobago in 38 international matches, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1993 and 2004. He also played for Trinidadian clubs Airport Authority, ECM Motown and North East Stars and Scottish Cup winner Dundee United in addition to eight years in Switzerland.

"Since I was born, I was kicking a ball. At halftime and after my dad's games, I would be on the field kicking the ball and the fans were cheering me on," Nixon recalled about his early years in Switzerland. "The past few years I went back a few times. I remember it vividly. It's home still and the downtown area is really nice. It's a really nice vibe and really peaceful environment."

Nixon's mother Kathy-Ann also represented Trinidad on the national team. Nixon remembers attending her games as she captained Joe Public FC in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League.

Nixon, himself, also played in World Cup qualifiers on the country's U17 team.

The family relocated to Atlanta when Nixon was 12 years old. He attended a couple of years of high school in Georgia before joining the Philadelphia Union Academy and completing his prep schooling at the Major League Soccer club's YSC Academy.

At Virginia, Nixon appeared in 26 matches spanning the 2016, '17 and '19 seasons. He recorded his lone collegiate point in three seasons with the Cavaliers with an assist on a game-tying goal against Lehigh on Oct. 10, 2017.

Nixon had a year of eligibility remaining upon graduating from UVA with a bachelor's degree in American studies because he did not appear during the 2018 season.

"Jerren is a surprisingly quick player for his size, with an exceptional eye for goal," Cupid said. "He's definitely a team player with a really good ability to going forward. I enjoyed my time playing with him on the national team, and we are happy to welcome him to the Seawolves family."
