Briggs puts T&T on medal table

Akidah Briggs became the first T&T athlete to earn precious metal at the 44th Carifta Games here in Basseterre, St Kitts. Briggs threw the iron ball 15.09 metres to secure silver in the girls' under-18 shot put, in the first session today (Saturday).

George, Lewis in 400 hurdles final

Aaron Lewis into the 400m Hurdles Final

Both Tauren George and Aaron Lewis are through to the boys' under-20 400 metres hurdles final. George was an automatic qualifier, clocking 55.09 seconds to secure third spot in the opening heat. Lewis, though, advanced as a "fastest loser" after finishing fifth in heat two in 55.15. Lewis went out hard and looked a contender for one of the automatic qualifying berths, but faded coming home.

West 7th after octathlon 100

Ian West produced an 11.36 seconds run in the boys' open octathlon 100 metres dash. The run was worth 782 points for the T&T athlete. West is seventh, while his teammates, Kareem Lezama (11.78, 695 points) and Michael Mackenzie (11.91, 669 points) are 13th and 14th, respectively.

Akili clocks 15.26 in heptathlon hurdles

Anya Akili was the fastest of the T&T athletes on show in the girls' open heptathlon 100 metres hurdles. Akili clocked 15.26 seconds to earn 808 points. She is fifth after the first of seven disciplines. Meriah Freeman got to the line in 15.28 seconds, and is sixth with 805 points. And Khemani Roberts secured 665 points with her 16.41 seconds clocking, and is ninth.

St Louis 6th in triple jump

Alisha St Louis finished sixth in the girls' under-18 triple jump, late on Friday. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete produced a wind-assisted 11.56 metres effort. Her only wind-legal jump in the competition was 11.38m. Bahamian Charisma Taylor (12.01m) captured the gold medal.

Frederick, Pierre bow out

Both T&T entrants bowed out in the qualifying round of the boys' under-20 400 metres event. In heat one, Jesse Frederick pulled up lame close to the 200-metre mark. And in the second heat, Jamoul Pierre finished fifth in 49.18 seconds. The clocking was not fast enough to earn Pierre a "fastest loser" lane in tomorrow's final.

St Clair advances in one-lap

Jacob St Clair will face the starter in tomorrow's boys' under-18 400 metres final. In today's qualifying round, the T&T quartermiler finished second in heat two in 48.20 seconds to secure automatic qualification. Judah Taylor also represented T&T in the event, but was elimnated after finishing fifth in heat one in 51.32.

Stoddard in 400 final

Renee Stoddard qualfied for tomorrow's girls' under-18 400 metres final. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete clocked 56.28 seconds to finish third in heat two, advancing to the championship race automatically. The other T&T entrant, Anika Wolfe was sixth in heat one in 58.39, and did not advance.

So what's up with Christopher Taylor? He ran 45.69 on Jamaica's lightening fast track but just managed 46.64? Was it the rounds? Does he run fast if he has just one race?

Another peculiarity - last year when he first came on the scene and ran 48.7 they said he was 13 years old; this year they say he was 15 when he ran 45.69. Now when the Carifta results are posted they are posting his age as 16. What gives? He's a phenom for sure, but wish someone can provide his actual age.

If it wasn't for her very slow start, I think Kayelle Clarke could have won a silver in the U-20 100m. As it was she just got edged out for the bronze and she ran out of real estate to get back into the top 3.

Hopefully Kayelle can make up for the disappointment in the 100m by successfully defending her 200m title that she won last year.

On a competitive note right now both Bahamas and Barbados are ahead of T&T on gold medals so we need to have very good days both tomorrow and Monday in order to pass them both and move into 2nd place in the Medal Table behind Jamaica. Anything less and we will need to be asking our coaches at home and our NAAA's some serious questions regards what they are doing to spot and develop our young talented athletes so we can start trying to compete with Jamaica who are in desperate need of some competition at Carifta level.

Sando and Socapro, Happy Easter. Fellow Breds, actually both of you are correct. We are underachievers when looking at our population and resources. And really we should be better than Bahamas and Barbados. But some years we are good and come 2nd to JA. Other years we are bad and will be 3rd or 4th on the medal table. But the peculiar thing remains. why is there such a huge gap in performance between us and JA, even when we have our "best" team. This has been the case from the very first Carifta games. If TT wins 10 golds, JA will win 25 to 30 golds. If we win 30 medals overall, JA will win about 65. And wether we like or not, medal count is part of TF. But the actually performance of each athlete is most important. Remember this is both a developmental meet and also the first international meet for the youngsters.

Like Deeks said you are both correct Sando and Soca.

Trinidad has the second largest population at Carifta level. So technically we have a larger talent pool to choose from than Bahamas and Barbados and therefore should be doing better. However we only tap into 34%(according to Wikipedia, I'm aware it's not a reliable referencing resource but for arguments sake) of that talent by focusing solely on the afro trinbagonian population. So if we say that we have a population of 1.3million then approximately 440000 is our actual talent pool. Though it is more than BAH and BAR it is much closer than 1.3million. We have to market the sport to everybody to tap into more talent. It is good to focus on these population dynamics with other countries to gauge where we are at.

However track and field excluding the relays is an individual sport. It is a team sport in the sense of representing your country and winning as many medals for them as possible but when you step onto that track or circle or runway- athletes compete as individuals. If they each focus on improving individually then the whole team can improve collectively and in the process we can win more medals.

In my opinion we have to take both points into consideration to maximize our overall performance.

Jamaica is a whole other kettle of fish. Track and field runs through their veins it is their number one sport. Have you seen their highschool champs? The amount of talent there is massive and it will only get bigger and better. They have a culture of track and field there that is admirable. It enjoys a higher attendance than their senior champs. They also have great coaches from high school right up to pro- model coaches like Franno and Mills and clubs they can go to where they can be coached to an amazing level at home once they come out of high school/ uni. Not saying that TNT doesn't have that but it's not on a relatively large scale. E.g Jehue was coached to gold by Dr Hypolite in Trinidad, Keshorn by the his coach and Cleopatra who has won many medals and made many finals by hers (correct me if I'm wrong).

If we ever want to challenge Jamaica we have to adopt a culture similar to theirs and stick to it for many years which I don't think will happen. We just have to do the best we can do right now and support or athletes through thick and thin.

One good thing is that we currently have a relatively large crop of world class athletes. Once they retire (wishing them the longest and most prosperous career possible) they can give back by using their knowledge and experience to coach the up and coming athletes so long as politics does not interfere as it often does.

Isaiah Taylor produced Trinidad and Tobago’s first golden moment at the 44th Carifta Games, here in Basseterre, St Kitts, yesterday.

Taylor topped the Boys Under-18 shot put field with a Games record throw of 17.56 metres. Jamaicans Kevin Nedrick (17.44m) and Kyle Mitchell (17.03m) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Jacob St Clair celebrates his silver medal after U-18 400m final

Jacob St Clair produced a spectacular run to strike silver in the Boys Under-18 400 metres final.

St Clair made a strong challenge for the title, the T&T quartermiler battling hard in the final stages of the race. He closed in on the leader, Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, but eventually ran out of track. St Clair had the satisfaction, though, of clocking a personal best 46.73 seconds. Taylor got gold in 46.64, while bronze went to another Jamaican, Devaughn Ellington (47.43).

Asha James claimed silver for T&T in the Girls Under-18 javelin with a 45.12m throw. Gold went to Barbadian Hayley Matthews (47.37m), while bronze was bagged by Dominica’s Shanee Angol (43.55m). Another T&T thrower, Akidah Briggs (40.35m) was sixth.

Briggs put T&T on the medal table during yesterday’s morning session.

The Toco field athlete threw the iron ball 15.09m to seize silver in the Girls Under-18 shot put. Briggs was in pole position for much of the competition, taking the lead in round one with a 14.43m effort. She followed up with her 15.09 personal best in round two, and kept the lead up to the end of the fourth round.

In round five, however, Jamaica’s Sahjah Stevens produced a monster throw, 16.31m, establishing a new Carifta Games record and snatching gold from Briggs in the process. In an effort to land the big one, Briggs fouled her last three attempts. Bahamian Laquell Harris earned bronze with a 14.54m effort.

At the end of the competition, Briggs spoke to the Sunday Express.

“The feeling is very good. I expected more than this, but unfortunately I came out with the silver medal…not what I wanted, but I’m extremely satisfied. The goal was over 16 metres. Unfortunately I fell short, but I’m happy that I got the silver medal and I’m also happy that I got over 15 metres.”

Renee Stoddard finished sixth in the Girls Under-18 400m final, the T&T quartermiler clocking 55.95 seconds.

Meanwhile, both Tauren George and Aaron Lewis are through to today’s Boys Under-20 400m hurdles final.

George was an automatic qualifier, clocking 55.09 seconds to secure third spot in the opening heat. Lewis, though, advanced as a “fastest loser” after finishing fifth in heat two in 55.15.

Lewis went out hard and looked a contender for one of the automatic qualifying berths, but faded coming home.

Ashton Gill returned a time of four minutes, 08.10 seconds to finish seventh in the Boys Under-20 1500m. His T&T teammate, Iley Bruce was eighth in 4:14.30.

In the Girls Under-18 long jump, Safiya John (5.24m) and Chevelle McPherson (4.85m) were sixth and 14th, respectively.

Omari Benoit finished seventh in the Boys Under-20 high jump. The T&T jumper’s best clearance in the competition was 2.00m. In the Boys Under-20 discus, Kenejah Williams threw 44.36m to secure seventh spot. In the Boys Under-18 high jump, Franklyn Stanislaus cleared the bar at 1.80m to finish 11th.

And late on Friday, Alisha St Louis finished sixth in the Girls Under-18 triple jump. The T&T athlete produced a wind-assisted 11.56m effort. Her only wind-legal jump in the competition was 11.38m.

After press time, last night, T&T’s Kayelle Clarke challenged for the Girls Under-20 100m title. The New Mexico Junior College freshman won heat one in 11.64 seconds to advance to the final as the second fastest qualifier.

The other T&T sprinter in the event, Kadesha Prescott was 11th overall in 12.33, and did not qualify for the championship race.

Akanni Hislop was among the starters in the Boys Under-18 100m final. He was third in his heat in 10.68 and progressed as a “fastest loser”. Hislop’s T&T teammate, Tyrel Edwards was disqualified for a false start in heat two.

Xavier Mulugata qualified for the Boys Under-20 100m final when he finished third in heat two in a wind-assisted 10.57. He advanced via the “fastest loser” route. Francis Louis clocked a windy 10.58 in heat three, and just missed out on a lane in the final.

And in the Girls Under-18 100m, Deleth Charles and Akeera Esdelle were eliminated. Thirteen-year-old Charles finished 15th overall in 12.33 seconds, while Esdelle was 16th in a wind-aided 12.42.
