Horsford breaks Carifta record

Tyriq Horsford produced a record-breaking throw in the boys' under-18 javelin, the T&T athlete landing the spear 70.73 metres to secure gold in the event. The throw is a Carifta Games record, as well as a new national youth (under-18) standard. Another T&T thrower, Vandel Joseph claimed bronze with a 61.67m effort. Silver went to Jamaica's Kevin Nedrick (65.09m)

Warren gets her gold

Portious Warren threw a personal best 15.22 metres to grab gold in the girls' under-20 shot put. Another T&T thrower, Chelsea James produced a 14.73m effort to bag bronze. Trevia Gumbs, of the British Virgin Islands, claimed silver with a 14.83m throw.

Hislop 2nd in 200 final

Akanni Hislop clocked 10.47 seconds to earn silver for T&T in the boys’ under-18 100m dash. Bahamian Javan Martin won in 10.41, while bronze went to Jamaican Tyreke Wilson (10.56).

Kayelle Clarke was fourth in the girls’ under-20 100m in 11.75 seconds. And in the boys’ under-20 100m, Xavier Mulugata clocked 10.65 to finish sixth.

James claims javelin silver

Asha James claimed silver for T&T in the girls’ under-18 javelin with a 45.12m throw. Gold went to Barbadian Hayley Matthews (47.37m), while bronze was bagged by Dominica’s Shanee Angol (43.55m). Shot put silver medallist Akidah Briggs (40.35m) was sixth.

Jacob St Clair celebrates his silver medal after U-18 400m final

Jacob St Clair produced a spectacular run to strike silver in the boys’ under-18 400 metres final. St Clair made a strong challenge for the title, the T&T quartermiler battling hard in the final stages of the race. He closed in on the leader, Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, but eventually ran out of track. St Clair had the satisfaction, though, of clocking a personal best 46.73 seconds. Taylor got gold in 46.64, while bronze went to another Jamaican, Devaughn Ellington (47.43).

Isaiah Taylor struck gold for T&T this evening. He topped the boys’ under-18 shot put field with a Games record throw of 17.56 metres. Jamaicans Kevin Nedrick (17.44m) and Kyle Mitchell (17.03m) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

West currently 6th in octathlon

After three disciplines in the boys' open octathlon, T&T's Ian West is sixth with 2,049 points. West clocked 11.36 seconds in the 100m, jumped 6.14m in the long jump and threw 12.72m in the shot put.

Benoit, Williams 7th

Omari Benoit finished seventh in the boys' under-20 high jump. The T&T jumper's best clearance in the competition was 2.00 metres. And in the boys' under-20 discus, Kenejah Williams threw 44.36m to secure seventh spot.

Clarke to challenge for 100 crown

Kayelle Clarke will challenge for the girls' under-20 100 metres title. In the qualifying round, the US-based T&T sprinter won heat one in 11.64 seconds to qualify second fastest for tonight's final. Jamaica's Natalliah Whyte won the second heat in 11.55 seconds to go into the championship race as the fastest qualifier.

Kim Collins to Appear at CARIFTA Games 44 as Athletic Stadium to be Renamed in His Honor

Kim Collins being recognized for flying St Kitts & Nevis flag around the world

World Sprint Legend and the fastest Man over the age of 35 in history will be the focal point of a special ceremony being staged at the CARIFTA 44 Games in Basseterre, St.Kitts.

Hon. Shawn K Richards Deputy Prime Minister of St.Kitts-Nevis and Minister of Sports announced on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 44th CARIFTA Games that Collins will be recognized and honoured during a special ceremony to be held on Sunday April 5th at 3pm at the games being held now at the Silver Jubilee Stadium. The highlight of the Ceremony will be the official renaming of the stadium in honor of the World Champion and multi-time World and Indoor Championship medalist. The stadium will be renamed the KIM COLLINS National Athletic Stadium.

The stadium which was opened in 2008 played host to the CARIFTA GAMES held that year. The Stadium was named the Silver Jubilee Stadium whilst a stand in the Stadium was named the Kim Collins Stand. This created an uproar as the country felt that the new stadium should bare his name at the very least. Many have blamed political machinations as the reason for what most saw as a slight of Collins in the naming of the facility.

The renaming of the Athletic facility on Sunday will no doubt be seen as a correcting of a wrong and will no doubt be welcomed by every citizen of St.Kitts-Nevis .

Kim Collins is the most well known national of St.Kitts-Nevis. His phenomenal career as a world class athlete has made him a household name internationally. From China to Russia, from Canada to Iran from Taiwan to Angola Kim Collins is known , regarded, respected and loved.

His International Career began in 1996 with his first of 5 appearances at the Olympic Games. He made it to the Quarter Finals . In 2000 in Syndney in just his second appearance he became the first OECS National representing an OECS country to run in an Olympic Finals in the 100m. The following year he raced to glory with a memorable victory at the Commonwealth Games of 2001 and then two years later his historic World Championship Victory in Paris, France.

Some 19 years after making his first International Appearance Kim Collins remains at the top of World Sprint Athletics. He is currently the Number 1 ranked Sprinter in the world over 60m having not lost a race for the entire 2015 season. He holds the World’s record for the fastest time ever ran by an athlete over 35 with his Masters Record 9.98 seconds run in 2014 at age 38.
Without a doubt Kim Collins is a Living Legend and a role model to children throughout the world.

Another gold medal for T&T. While some are focus on the medal table, athletes are improving in different events. Like I said before T&T continue to excel in the field events. All our gold medals so far has come in field events.

5,310 points for West

Ian West finished seventh in the boys' open octathlon with 5,310 points. His T&T teammate, Michael Mackenzie was 15th with 4,596 points. Another T&T athlete, Kareem Lezama was a non-finisher, having competed in just four of the eight disciplines.

4,281 points for Roberts

Khemani Roberts was the best of the T&T athletes on show in the girls' open heptathlon. She accumulated 4,281 points in the seven-discipline event to finish fifth. Meriah Freeman (3,982) and Anya Akili (3,807) were seventh and ninth, respectively.

Under-20 girls disqualified

T&T earned three medals in the 4x100m events. The girls' under18 quartet claimed silver in 47.10 seconds. The under-18 boys also picked up silver, getting home in 41.43. And the boys' under-20 quartet clocked 40.55 seconds to secure bronze. The under-20 girls were disqualified for a baton exchange outside the zone.

Hislop was the fastest of the boys’ under-18 qualifiers, topping his heat in 21.25. And Clarke clocked 23.94 for second spot in her girls’ under-20 heat.

Andwuelle Wright captured Trinidad and Tobago’s fourth gold medal at the 2015 Carifta Games here in Basseterre, St Kitts, late yesterday.

Just before press time, Wright was crowned Boys Under-20 long jump champion, the 17-year-old athlete entertaining an appreciative crowd at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium with a wind-assisted 7.44 metres leap.

Tyriq Horsford produced a monster throw in the morning session, landing the spear a record-breaking 70.73m to secure gold in the Boys Under-18 javelin.

Horsford, who turned 15 in January, upstaged his older rivals with the jaw-dropping round five effort. After four rounds, the T&T field athlete trailed Jamaica’s Kevin Nedrick (65.09m). But everything then fell into place for Horsford, the young thrower establishing a new Carifta Games under-18 record, as well as T&T Under-16 and Under-18 records.

“I was shocked,” Horsford told the Express, “shocked and excited at the same time. The goal I came into the Games with was to achieve 70 metres, and I did so.”

Another T&T thrower, Vandell Joseph claimed bronze with a 61.67m effort, while Nedrick’s 65.09m throw earned him silver.

Portious Warren threw a personal best 15.22m to grab gold in the Girls Under-20 shot put. Another T&T thrower, Chelsea James produced a 14.73m effort, also a PR (personal record), to bag bronze. Trevia Gumbs, of the British Virgin Islands, claimed silver with a 14.83m throw.

“I’m extremely gratified,” Warren told the Express. “Though I didn’t go away with the record, I came away with a PR, 15.22, first 15 of the season. There are many more to come.

“For me,” she continued, “I have no limitation. I just want to go out there each and every time, just give it my best because you never know what’s your limit.”

Kayelle Clarke was fourth in the Girls Under-20 100m final in 11.75 seconds. And in the Boys Under-20 100m, Xavier Mulugata clocked 10.65 to finish sixth.

Isaiah Taylor was the first of the T&T gold medallists, winning Saturday’s boys’ under-18 shot put with a Games record throw of 17.56m.

“Strategy was just to remain calm,” said Taylor. “I came out here and I did what I was supposed to do. All the hard work that I have done was not in vain. I’m very glad for making this pb (personal best), and I know I have a lot more progress to make.”

Taylor outlined the keys to his success.
“Thanking God every day, remaining calm, talking with my coach, and just getting support from my family, friends, and also my coach.”

In a moving ceremony, yesterday, the Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium was re-named the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium, in honour of the country’s 2003 100m world champion.

Less than 24 hours after Isaiah Taylor captured T&T’s first gold medal in a new Games record which bettered the 17.42m set by Jamaican Christopher Brown four year ago, his compatriots Tyriq Hosford and Portious Warren added two more gold medals via field events, shot put and javelin.

Hosford competing in the Boys under-18 Shot field put even, Tyriq Hosford added another gold when he threw the 700g “Iron Spear” 70-73 metres on his fifth of six throws at the 44th Carifta Games taking place at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, Basseterre Stadium, St Kitts yesterday.

Hosford challenged 14 contenders in his quest for gold and records distances of (64.18, 58.59, 57.81, a fouled effort, 70.73 and closed off with 68.32metres) to hold off Jamaica’s Kevin Nedrick (65.09m), the leader at the halfway mark.

Hosford’s compatriot Vandel Joseph secured the bronze medal with an effort of 61.67 metres. In fact he was the leader from the start. He fouled his second attempt, then followed up with efforts of 56.78m, 56.89m, another foul and finally 60.67m.

Meanwhile, Warren also had her challenges when she bounced back from fouling her first attempt to land the precious gold medal with her fifth attempt (15.22 metres). Her efforts were 13.85m, 14.50m, 14.42m, 15.22m and 14.60m. Her opponents Trevia Gumbs finished second with a 14.83m throw in her second attempt before fouling her next four efforts, while T&T”s Chelsea James ended in third place with a best of 14.73 metres. She had five good attempts (13.84m 14.15m 13.96m 14.56m 14.73m) before red-flagging her last try.

Sprinter Akanni Hislop secured the silver medal in the Boys Under-18 100 metres dash behind a time of 10.47 seconds, trailing Bahamian Javan Martin, who stopped the clock at 10.41 seconds with Jamaican Tyreke Wilson third in 10.56.

There was no medals for T&T in the Girls Under-20 100 metres finals after Kayelle Clarke had to settle for fourth place in 11.75 seconds which was slower than the 11.64 she clocked in the preliminaries. The race was won by Natalliah Whyte of Jamaica in 11.56 seconds, one hundredths of a second slower than her qualifying time.

T&T’s Xavier Mulugata finished sixth in the Boys Under-20 finals in 10.65 seconds. His qualifying time was 10.57 seconds.

GIRLS’ Under-20 200m

Defending champion Kayelle Clarke of Trinidad & Tobago who had one of the narrowest margins of victory last year returns to take on all challengers for her coveted crown. Clarke who attends New Mexico Junior College made the women’s 200m semi-finals at the World Junior Championships last year and has a personal best of 23.44 seconds. She has not run many 200m outdoors this season and therefore might be lacking race sharpness. She will be hoping to get things right on the big day.

Nelda Huggins (23.77 PB) of the British Virgin Islands and Sada Williams (23.43 PB) of Barbados who were also in the same semi-finals as T&T’s Clarke at the World Junior Championships will add potency to this field. Kieanna Albury of Bahamas is a quality athlete and should be in the mix of things.

Jamaica’s Saqukine Cameron in last year’s 200m final seemed on course to challenge for a medal before pulling up injured with about 60 metres to go in the home straight, is now on a course of redemption in her final CARIFTA Games. She had been sprinting impressively throughout the season before her mediocre showing at ‘Champs 2015’. Cameron up to that point had established a new personal best of 23.18 seconds at the Jamaica CARIFTA trials and looked unbeatable. Now she has one final attempt to make things right and graduate from the junior level with honours.

The other Jamaican spot could come down to a toss up between Rene Medley who finished second at the CARIFTA trials and Natalliah Whyte (23.36 PB) the Youth Olympic champion and recent double sprint queen at ‘Champs’. Since the trials, Natalliah Whyte has been the more impressive of the two sprinters. She could get the nod ahead of Medley based on current form. Caribbean fans should expect top class sprinting from this field and the possibility of a photo finish deciding the winner must not be ruled out.

BOYS’ Under-20 200m

Barbadian Mario Burke fresh from his sensational victory in the Boys’ Under-20 100m final in a personal best (10.21) must be harbouring thoughts of winning the sprint double. Burke, will be competing against a few sprinters who specialize in this event and will probably need to run another personal best to claim a famous victory.

One of the sprinters who will pose a serious threat to Burke’s victory aspirations is Trinidadian Jonathan Farinha. The tall and smooth striding Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) sprinter is the former 2012 Under-17 200m champion and has a personal best of 20.68 seconds. Farinha has the distinction of being in both the 2013 World Youth and 2014 World Junior Championships finals in this event. He demonstrated that he is in good sprinting form winning the 2015 T&T CARIFTA trials in an impressive 20.71 seconds. He will be hoping for a medal to make up for his no-show in last year’s classic CARIFTA final.

Jamaica’s Chad Walker is another medal prospect in this event. It is his first year among the seniors after winning the Under-18 200m crown last year. Walker was an easy winner of Jamaica’s 2015 CARIFTA trials and placed second at ‘Champs’ behind Michael O’Hara in the 200m final. Some observers believe Walker must run faster than his personal best of 20.97 seconds to have any chance of standing on the podium.

It is not clear if Jamaica’s second participant in this event will be Nigel Ellis who came second to Walker at the CARIFTA trials. Ellis has lots of potential, however, many Jamaicans feel that World Youth champion and World Junior Championship bronze medallist Michael O’Hara is more worthy and should report for duty. O’Hara is the defending CARIFTA champion in this event and will no doubt like an opportunity to retain his title and finish unfinished business with Mario Burke of Barbados. Let us hope for the sake of the fans; the Jamaican officials will make the right decision. Will Burke become the undisputed king of Caribbean sprinting?

The outstanding performance at the 2010 Carifta Games in George Town, Cayman Islands is the standard Trinidad and Tobago teams must strive for. The country’s athletes captured a record haul of 40 medals at this edition of the regional junior championships, Jehue Gordon leading the way with a hurdles double.

Gordon was named most outstanding athlete at that Games, taking home the coveted Austin Sealy trophy. Later that year, he became world junior champion in the 400 metres hurdles, and did the same at the senior level in 2013.

Keshorn Walcott also struck gold for T&T at the 2010 Carifta Games. It’s now history that while still a junior athlete, Walcott captured the Olympic men’s javelin title, showering himself in glory at the 2012 London Games.

That 2010 T&T team was packed with talent, so a total of 40 medals, including 12 of the golden variety, is not the kind of performance to be expected from every T&T team that attends the Carifta Games.

Inevitably, there was a drop-off in performance the following year, the 2011 team earning seven gold medals and 29 in total.

The downward trend continued in 2012—22 medals for T&T at the Carifta Games, six of them bronze. The 2013 team got the golden tally up to eight, but the overall haul dropped by two medals, to 20.

Last year, T&T slipped back to six in the gold column, but earned a total of 25 medals in Martinique.

This weekend 68 athletes will be in St Kitts and Nevis representing the Red, White and Black.

Three of the five individual gold medallists at Carifta 2014—Machel Cedenio, Shakiel Waithe and Kevin Roberts—are no longer in the junior ranks. But though this is something of a rebuilding year, there is enough quality on the 2015 team for T&T supporters to have reasonable expectations of the teen athletes matching last year’s golden haul.

Kayelle Clarke is a freshman at New Mexico Junior College in the US, but is making the long trek to St Kitts and Nevis to defend her girls’ under-20 200m title. Another 2014 champion, Chelsea James makes her under-20 debut. Also on the team are former Carifta champions Jonathan Farinha, Andwuelle Wright and Jeminise Parris, as well as in-form throwers Portious Warren, Tyriq Horsford and Akidah Briggs.

A total medal haul in the 20s would be a satisfactory showing as the T&T junior programme builds with the 2010 benchmark in mind. Crossing the 25-medal mark would certainly be a welcome bonus.

So far we are only on 13 medals going by my count:- 4 gold (Boys U-20 Long Jump, Girls U-20 Shot Put, Boys U-18 Javelin Throw, Boys U-18 Shot Put); 5 silver (Girls U-18 Shot Put, Boys U-18 400m, Boys U18 100m, Girls U-18 4x100m, Boys U-18 4x100m) & 4 bronze (Boys U-18 Javelin Throw, Girls U-20 Shot Put, Girl U-18 400m Hurdles, Boys U-20 4x100m).

Seeing that our minimum expectation was to win at least 20 medals with at least the same number of gold medals as last year (based on above article by Kwame Laurence), we need to win at least 7 medals today with a minimum of 2 of them being gold. Anything less and we have had a disappointing games and are still regressing as per the trend since 2010.

PS:
Our Girls U-20 4x100m Relay Team threw away a definite bronze medal yesterday evening by making one of their baton exchanges outside of the baton exchanging zone, seeing that only 3 teams were in the Final. Kayelle Clarke has had a disappointing 2015 CARIFTA Games so far seeing that she could have definitely won a silver medal in the 100m Final had she had a better start and now her Relay Team threw away an easy bronze medal which could even have been a silver if they had done better exchanges throughout the race.
I hope that Kayelle Clarke can make up for her disappointment so far by winning gold in the Girls U-20 200m final this evening but it won't be easy as the Jamaicans and the Bahamians are also looking good.
Kayelle Clarke may need to run near her PB or better in the 200m final if she hopes to win gold.

Lewis 2nd in heat two

Aaron Lewis will face the starter in this afternoon's boys' under-20 110 metres hurdles final. This morning, the T&T athlete finished second in heat two in a wind-assisted 13.90 seconds to secure an automatic berth in the championship race.

Glasgow throws 39.76 metres

Ayana Glasgow was fifth in the girls' under-20 javelin with a 39.76 metres throw.

Williams just outside medals

Kenejah Williams finished just outside the medals in the boys' under-20 shot put. The T&T field athlete threw 16.10 metres to finish fourth. His teammate, Shaquille Singuineau produced a 15.59m effort to secure sixth spot.

T&T up to 15 medals

Khemani Roberts added to the Trinidad and Tobago medal tally with silver in the girls' under-20 high jump. She cleared the bar at 1.73 metres. Jamaicans Safia Morgan (1.76m) and Shanae McKenzie (1.73m) earned gold and bronze, respectively.

Going into the final session of the meet, there are 15 medals in the T&T bag - four gold, seven silver, four bronze.

Paul 7th in triple jump

T&T's Kobe John clocked 54.29 seconds to secure fifth spot in the boys' under-18 400m hurdles final, on Sunday. Troy Richards was eighth in one minute, 07.09 seconds.

Terrel Paul produced a 13.06 metres throw to finish seventh in the boys' under-18 triple jump. Troy Richards (13.05m) was eighth.

Based on the above info we have T&T athletes in 15 Finals this evening meaning we have 15 chances of winning a medal but I think our best chances of winning medals this evening will be from the following athletes/teams if they put out their best performances:-

Jeminise Parris in the U-20 100m Hurdles
Aaron Lewis in the U-20 110m Hurdles
Terry Fredericks in the U-18 800m
Chelsea James in the U-20 Discus
Akanni Hislop in the U-18 200m
Kayelle Clarke in the U-20 200m
Jonathan Farinha in the U-20 200m
T&T Team in the Men's U-18 4x400m
T&T Team in the Men's U-20 4x400m

If all goes well our best chances of gold medals this evening will be from Akanni Hislop, Kayelle Clarke & Jonathan Farinha. We may possibly win another gold medal but it is difficult to predict who of our other likely medalists will rise to the occasion and strike gold and note that PB's might be required from all the possible gold medalists.

Sando Prince is focused on TnT improving in individual events in each discipline which will lead to more medals. Does not matter if we finish third, fourth or fith on the medal table once we improve from the previous year.
