Borel to compete at Paris Diamond League
Saturday, July 4 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Cleopatra Borel, T&T Shot Put Champion 2015

CLEOPATRA BOREL is expected to feature in the IAAF Diamond League Meet in Paris, France today.

The 36-year-old retained her national shot put crown at the NGC/Sagicor National Track and Field Championships on Sunday, with a throw of 18.46 metres.

And she will be going up against some of the best in the world, including world and Olympic champion Valerie Adams of New Zealand, who is recovering from elbow and shoulder surgery and will be seeking to extend her five-year winning streak, in all major competitions, to 56.

Other competitors who will be looking to get the better of both Borel and Adams are Christina Schwanitz of Germany and Gong Lijiao of China. who both lead the points tally, in the women’s shot put, at this year’s Diamond Race.

In related news, a pelvis injury has ruled world record holder Usain Bolt out of both the 100 and 200 metres at today’s meet.

But a number of the top performers of 2015 are expected to feature, including 100m sprinters Asafa Powell (Jamaica) and Kim Collins (St Kitts/Nevis), as well as Olympic queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica); 400m Olympic king Kirani James (Grenada); pole vaulters Renaud Lavillenie of France and Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany; 5,000-metre runners Almaz Ayana and Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia.

Fraser-Pryce won’t defend 200m title in Beijing
Published on Jul 3, 2015, 9:43 pm AST (T&T Express)

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at Diamond League Press Conference

PARIS - Reigning women’s 200 metres World champion, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, said yesterday she would not defend her title at the World Championships in Beijing next month.

Speaking to media ahead of today’s Areva Diamond League meet in Paris, the 28-year-old confirmed she would not participate in the half-lap in an attempt to focus on the 100 metres.

“No, for sure, only the 100m,” Fraser-Pryce said, in response to a question about competing in the double in Beijing.

“It was a decision that was taken by my coach from last year that we’ll opt to do just the 100m this year and just focus on getting back to where I used to be in 2008.”

She added: “He believed I strayed a bit from the 100m in terms of my explosive starts. So we’ve been going back to the 100m, bearing in mind that next year is the Olympic Games.”

Fraser-Pryce is one of the most successful sprinters of the contemporary era. She won gold in the 100m at the London 2012 Olympics and grabbed silver in the 200m, before sweeping both sprints at the Moscow World Championship the following year.

She will have fond memories of Beijing, having won Olympic gold there in 2008.

Despite the decision to overlook the 200m for this year’s World Championships, Fraser-Pryce said she would be eyeing the double at the Rio Olympics next year.

“The 200m was good, it definitely helped me to run the 100m a little bit better and a little bit stronger,” she explained.

“Going back to just the 100m for this year, I’m looking forward to it, as opposed to next year when I will definitely be doubling.”

Cleopatra 4th in the Women's Shot put with SB of 19.07. She was in 3rd place until the very last round when she was pipped by the American Michelle Carter.
Valerie Adams in her first meet back after an operation placed 5th behind Cleo.
We can expect Adams to keep improving with every competition as she has rarely been beaten in the past. Congrats to our Cleo and the others who were able to beat Valerie Adams today as I suspect she will not allow herself to be beaten too many times again in the future.

Shelly Ann is way too strong. She didn't fade at all... She won't be beaten without a mishap. The only person who can beat her is MLA at full strength with a decent start

We need to give MLA a chance to heal properly from her grade II hamstring injury and then to work on improving her slow starts and running technique. Hopefully MLA's weaknesses will be corrected before Rio 2016 and if they are then its hell for everyone who wants to keep her off the medal podium.

MLA's current running technique which has plenty room for improvement could possibly be leading to her frequent injuries whenever she starts running fast (sub-11 times). I am only speculating here but it will explain her tendency to get injured whenever she starts running very fast.

If MLA's current coach cannot help to improve MLA's starts and running technique to get her to perform at the elite level without being so injury prone then maybe MLA should consider giving Ato (who already has Khalifa St Fort in his camp) a call to help work on her weaknesses.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves due to patriotism. MLA is yet to run a 10.7x in her career so how is she going to be more of a threat to a Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at her best (in 10.7x form) than some of the other elite female sprinters who have run faster than MLA's 10.85 PB on a number of occasions?

PS:
In fact I would love to see Kai Selvon, Kamaria Durant, Reyare Thomas and Michelle-Lee Ahye all join Ato's camp as I think he can get them all down to consistent sub-11 form after working with them long enough but the question is does Ato have the time to work with so many of our female sprinters given his busy schedule?
Thinking about it I can also see some of our young male sprinters benefiting from working with Ato as he will improve their running techniques and get them to run more 200's to help improve their speed endurance.

Borel throws 19
…beats Olympic champ in Paris

Cleopatra Borel TTO Shot Put Champion 2015

Cleopatra Borel produced her first 19-metre effort this season, at the Meeting Areva IAAF Diamond League meet, in Paris, France, yesterday.

In the very first round of the women’s shot put, Borel landed the iron ball 19.07 metres to put herself in contention for a top-three finish. The Trinidad and Tobago thrower eventually secured fourth spot, just missing out on the podium.

Germany’s Christina Schwanitz was the class of the 12-woman field, striking gold with a huge 20.31m throw. Gong Lijiao picked up silver for China with a 19.75m effort. And bronze went to American Michelle Carter (19.37m).

While Borel’s 19.07m throw was her best on the day, she also had the satisfaction of coming close to the 19-metre mark in round two, the veteran field athlete throwing the iron ball 18.98m.

As a bonus, Borel defeated New Zealand’s Valerie Adams for only the second time in her career. The two-time Olympic champion was fifth yesterday with an 18.79m effort. Borel’s only other victory over Adams was 11 years ago in Austria. Going into the Paris meet, Adams had not lost a shot put competition since August 2010.

With yesterday’s 19.07m throw, Borel jumped from tenth to fourth on the 2015 world outdoor performance list. Only Schwanitz, the world leader at 20.77m, Gong (20.24m) and Carter (20.02m) have thrown further this season.

Borel is preparing for the July 10-26 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, and the August 22-30 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

T&T-based Cuban, Orlando Ortega produced one of the best performances in Paris yesterday. Ortega stopped the clock at a personal best 12.94 seconds to win the men’s 110m hurdles, taking over the top spot on the 2015 world performance list in the process. The 23-year-old hurdler is now joint-tenth on the world all-time list, alongside American Jack Pierce and Jamaican Hansle Parchment.

Borel fourth in Paris
Sunday, July 5 2015 (T&T Newsday)

CLEOPATRA BOREL’s best throw for 2015 failed to land her among the Women’s Shot Put medals at the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Diamond League meet in Paris, France yesterday.

Borel, who had picked up silver in Birmingham, England with her previous best of 18.80 metres, launched the iron ball a distance of 19.07 metres in the French capital on Saturday and finished in fourth place. Germany’s Christina Schwanitz produced the day’s best of 20.31 to win the gold ahead of China’s Lijiao Gong (19.75) and American Michelle Carter (19.37).

The Caribbean’s track athletes did better on the day; Jamaican Asafa Powell stood out, converting a very good start into a 9.81 seconds winning time in the Men’s 100 metres; France’s Jimmy Vicaut (9.86) was second and American Mike Rodgers (9.99) got the bronze, while Jamaican Nesta Carter (10.02) finished fourth.

Earlier, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce had taken the women’s equivalent in 10.74, just ahead of Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbure (10.80) and English Gardner of the US (10.97).

However, Grenada’s Olympic 400-metre champion Kirani James was beaten in the Men’s quarter-mile by a strong-finishing South African Wayde Van Niekerk, who crossed the line in 43.96 seconds. James got the silver in 44.17 while American David Verburg (44.81) took the bronze.

The next meet on the Diamond League calendar will be on Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

I agree Soca. I'm all for MLA sitting out the rest of the season or at MOST running as part of the relay but that is it! The main priority is her health and being healthy for the Olympics.

Like you say it could well be improper technique which leads to these injuries and it was my hope that her coach would deal with that but it just seems as though he helped increase strength and speed without focus on technique.

I know she hasn't been in 10.7 territory so I may be very far ahead of myself but running 10.85 with a semi-ok( yes semi-ok) start and improper technique tells me she can be there once those things are amended.

On another note, Van Neikerk? Wow. I will like to see Cedenio's and Lendore's response to that.

Lendore is recovering from injury my friend so let’s not put extra pressure on him at this point which will only result in him re-injuring himself.

As for Cedenio, Van Neikerk already dusted him & the rest of the field out at the New York DL Meet a couple weeks ago (Wayde van Niekerk 44.24 NR wins 400m Final NY Diamond League 2015:
http://rutube.ru/video/619ac5a9f23c6e080e54d674e367c02c) so let’s give Van Neikerk his due respect at this point.  Van Neikerk is now justly rated at no.2 in the world just behind Kirani James because he has proven himself to be the no.2 400m man right now. In fact he probably just made Kirani realise that his main worry for World Champs is not defending champion LaShawn Merritt but Wayde van Niekerk.

Machel Cedenio just needs to put his head down and train as hard as possible with the hope that he keeps improving and once he does that then he will eventually be able to beat anyone. Getting on the podium at Rio 2016 Olympics should be Cedenio's main goal right now especially if he is not selected to compete in the individual 400m in Beijing due to his lane violation at T&T Trials.
Cedenio's short-term goal should be helping our 4x4 relay team to medal in Beijing if he is selected to the relay squad which seems almost certain at this point unlike his selection to run the individual 400m in Beijing which still hangs in the balance depending on if Jarrin Solomon runs the individual 400m WC qualification standard of 45.50 or better before the World Champs Team is announced.

I agree. MLA at most should only do the relay if she is ready to go for Beijing. There is no doubt in my mind that if MLA was 100%, she would have run 10.7x by now.

Van Neikerk has earned my respect since his 44.2. When I heard Kirani lost, I knew it was Van Neikerk.

I just want to see Cedenio or Lendore answer back.. obviously when they are ready.

Paris: Adams Loses Her Gamble, And Her Winning Streak

Paris: Adams Loses Her Gamble,
And Her Winning Streak

Valerie Adams - Women's Shot Put - Paris 2015 © Jiro Mochizuki

Valerie Adams may have described her competitive comeback at the Meeting Areva in Paris today as something of “a lottery” yesterday, but even the 2014 World Athlete of the Year cannot have imagined the numbers would fall so hard against her at her first IAAF Diamond League outing of 2015 on Saturday (4).

The world and Olympic champion’s five-year dominance of the women’s shot put came to a crushing end in the Stade de France this evening when she was defeated for the first time in 57 meetings on her return from shoulder and elbow operations 10 months ago.

Adams not only fell short of a 57th straight victory but could finish only fifth as Germany’s Christina Schwanitz cemented her reputation at the top of the 2015 putting pecking order with two throws over 20 metres and another four Diamond Race points.

The German’s best of 20.31m came in round six, having already thrown 20.17m and 20.18m in rounds three and five.

Adams ended with a best of 18.79m from the fifth round and she never looked anywhere close to her commanding best.

“I took a risk and came to compete against all the best current girls,” she said afterwards.

“I knew the winning streak was in danger, and I lost it. But I do not  feel that sorry. We can start again, and with better execution I will improve.”

Adams had received a great reception from the early comers to the Stade de Frane but the New Zealand great didn’t exactly announce her return with a bang, her first competitive throw for 10 months landing more than three metres short of her best at 18.17m.

Her second, a foul, fell short of the 17-metre line and with her third reaching only 18.25m she lay in sixth place at half way, trailing Schwanitz by nearly two metres.

Gong Lijiao was giving Schwanitz a great run for her money, though, the Chinese thrower, a Diamond League winner on home soil in Shanghai in May, eventually taking second with 19.75m.

US champion Michelle Carter’s final throw of 19.37m was enough for third.

Adams made up some ground in round four with 18.55m before her best in round five, but for a woman used to regularly peppering the ground beyond the 20-metre line this was painful stuff, not that Schwanitz is taking anything for granted as far the IAAF World Championships next month are concerned.

“It was a really very tough competition and it will be very tough in Beijing,” said the 2013 silver medallist. “I expect Valerie to be back in top shape. She will improve.

There will always be Paris for Schwanitz

“This is something special though. This win is very important to me because I beat Valerie for the first time in my career.”

Adams will hope it’s not the first of many. “There’s still a lot of time before Beijing,” she smiled ruefully.

Piotr Malachowski - Men's Discus Throw - Paris 2015 © Jiro Mochizuki

Piotr Malachowski was smiling too after he extended his lead over fellow-Pole Robert Urbanek at the top of the men’s discus Diamond Race standings with his third Diamond League victory in a row.

Malachowski won with a last round throw of 65.57m having led from round one in what he described as his best competition of the season.

Urbanek, who was second in the Diamond Race by just one point before tonight, could only finish fifth, while Zoltan Kovago of Hungary clinched second with 65.23m.

World leader Jason Morgan had an off day, the barrel-shaped Jamaican finishing down in seventh.

Michael Hartfield - Men's Long Jump - Paris 2015 © Giancarlo Colombo

The men’s long jump began as a close battle between Russia’s reigning world champion Aleksandr Menkov and Michael Hartfield, but it was the American who leapt to life in the final round to snatch victory from local man Kaeftien Gomis with 8.19m to 8.13m.

The Frenchman had briefly taken the lead after Menkov saw his pre-eminence disappear in round five when Australia’s Fabrice Lapierre and Spaniard Eusebio Caceres both went beyond eight metres.

Menkov sat out the last two rounds, much to his cost, as first Gomis, then Hartfield took the honours.

Hartfield is now level with Britain’s London 2012 Olympic Games champion Greg Rutherford at the top of the Diamond Race standings, while Menkov could eventually only finish fifth with a best of 7.99m.

Paris: Wayde Van Niekerk Makes History

Meeting Areva in Paris, member of the IAAF Diamond League - © Jiro Mochizuki

Wayde Van Niekerk made a little bit of history at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Paris when he became the first African to dip below 44 seconds for one lap of the track, when he ran 43.96 on Saturday (4).

The 22-year-old South African not only snatched his first victory in the Diamond Race but also announced himself as a genuine world title contender as he beat London 2012 Olympic Games champion Kirani James, handing the Grenadian his first defeat of the year and moving up to 10th on the all-time list for the event.

With van Niekerk on his outside, James strained every sinew in lane four to make up ground in the home straight but had to settle for second in 44.17.

US champion David Verburg was well back in third in 44.81.

On a night of five world leads on the track but a series of disappointments for the French fans, at least sprinter Jimmy Vicaut was able to send the crowd home happy after matching the European 100m record.

Vicaut ran 9.86, equalling Francis Obikwelu's 2004 mark, to finish second behind Asafa Powell in the Stade de France.

The latter clocked 9.81, his quickest time for four years, to win a race that was meant to feature his fellow-Jamaican Usain Bolt.

Mike Rodgers took third for the USA in 9.99, ensuring three men ran under 10 seconds for third time this year.

Vicaut’s area record was the third of the night, following van Niekerk and Evan Jager, who set a North American record in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

Jairus Kipchoge Birech (KEN) set a World Lead and Meeting Record of 7:58.83 in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase at the Meeting Areva in Paris, member of the IAAF Diamond League - © Jiro Mochizuki

The results of the steeplechase will show another world lead for 2014 Diamond Race winner Jairus Birech as the Kenyan notched up another victory, but the bald facts don’t tell half the story for Birech was well beaten before the final barrier by the outstanding Jager who had kicked away over the last 600m.

Just as the US champion looked as if he would claim a famous victory, he clattered the last hurdle and tumbled flat on the track, allowing his long-time shadow to streak past for an unlikely victory in 7:58.83, a meeting record and the night’s first world-leading performance.

How close Jager came to claiming that mark for himself. He had dragged Birech away from the rest with three laps to go and opened a five-metre lead with 600 metres left.

Birech closed briefly before the bell but the American was having the run of his life and streaked away down the back straight and over the final water jump.

Flat out

But just when he had the finish line in sight, his form failed him.

The pony-tailed runner earned a pretty good consolation prize, though, as he picked himself up to finish second in 8:00.45, smashing his own US and North American records.

“The stupid mistake cost me the sub-eight minutes, one of my big goals,” rued Jager afterwards. “Of course, I’m happy I made the Kenyans worried. I train for that. Today, I proved I can compete for the top position at the World Championships.”

There were two more world leads just a few minutes later as the ever consistent Eunice Sum took her 800m personal best down below 1:57 for the first time, and the irrepressible Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce blasted to 10.74 in the 100m, 0.05 quicker than her Jamaican championships win a week ago and just 0.04 away from her national record.

Sum supreme

Sum clocked 1:56.99 after Ilona Usovich had taken her through 400m in 56.33.

The Kenyan followed the Belarus pacer to 500m before kicking for home chased by Cuba’s Rose Mary Amanza who also ran a personal best with 1:57.70.

Selina Buchel took more than two-tenths from her best when runnng a Swiss record of 1:57.95 in third while, in what was surely the best 800m of the year so far, there were best as well for the US pair of Molly Ludlow in fourth and Chanelle Price in fifth, with 1:58.68 and 1:59.10 respectively.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM) set a World Lead and Meeting Record of 10.74 in the Women's
100m at the Meeting Areva in Paris, member of the IAAF Diamond League - © Jiro Mochizuki

Fraser-Pryce was pressed hard by Blessing Okagbare who had beaten her easily in Shanghai back in May.

This time the Jamaican was more than a match for the Nigerian and thrust ahead to win by 0.06.

USA’s English Gardner was well beaten into third in 10.97.

The crowd barely had time to catch breath before another world lead fell in the men’s 1500m as Silas Kiplagat outkicked Ayanleh Souleiman to take his second Diamond League victory of the year in 3:30.12.

The Djibouti runner was just five 0.05 behind his Kenyan rival while Ronald Kwemoi dipped ahead of Olympic champion Taoufik Makhloufi, 3:30.43 to 3:30.50.

Orlando Ortega (CUB) set a World Lead of 12.94 in the Men's 110m Hurdles at the Meeting
Areva in Paris, member of the IAAF Diamond League - © Jiro Mochizuki

Orlando Ortega produced his first sub-13 second performance to win the men’s 110m hurdles in yet another world-leading time.

The Cuban came late to overtake David Oliver on the line in 12.94 as the world champion also dipped under 13 seconds for the first time in 2015.

He thrust his chest out to stop the clock at 12.98 while Sergey Shubenkov took 0.03 from his own Russian record in third with 13.06.

Zuzana Hejnova looked to be approaching her pre-injury form from two years ago in the women’s 400m hurdles. The Czech 2013 world champion ran a season’s best and fell just short of the world lead with 53.76.

Behind her two athletes clocked national records: Sara Petersen lowering Denmark’s national mark to 53.99 while Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya was third in 54.12.
