Sancho applauds sponsors at Rotary Games Launch
Wednesday, March 18 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Minister of Sport, Brent Sancho

MINISTER OF Sport Brent Sancho wished aloud that he would be the last such minister to be obliged to ask corporate Trinidad and Tobago to invest in local sport.

Senator Sancho was speaking yesterday afternoon at the official launch of the 27th Rotary Games at the Lions’ Civic Centre, Mucurapo. The annual event for primary schools in Port of Spain and Environs is scheduled to be run off on Tuesday (March 24) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Sancho, a former national football team defender, reminded Rotaries and the media of the importance of sport as a means of keeping young people occupied and away from crime, as well as bringing welcome global attention to the country. He recalled the day almost three years ago when Keshorn Walcott won gold in the Men’s Javelin at the London Olympics. Sancho speculated that just about the entire nation waited and watched to enjoy the moment when the national flag was raised and the anthem was played for all the world to hear.

Chairman of the Port of Spain and Environs Sports Council Kelvin Nancoo noted that World Champion hurdler Jehue Gordon and sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye, both prominent figures in international athletics, competed in their formative years at the Rotary Games.

In his address, Nancoo also promised the competition at this year’s edition would be “very fierce,” given what he had seen of the young athletes in zonal competition last week. He also pointed out that since the Rotary Club’s association with these Games, Port of Spain and Environs have gone on to be champions in 25 of the last 27 National Primary School Games.

Among the other speakers yesterday were Bill Schultz, CEO/Director (Caribbean) of the Pan American Insurance Group, the main sponsors of the Games; and Robert Faria, president of the Port of Spain Rotary Club. The Massy foundation and Atlantic LNG are also part sponsors of the event. Some 89 schools are expected to participate in the Games.

This year’s Games, titled “Doing It Like A Boss”, will mark Port of Spain and Environs District’s dominance at the National Primary Schools Track and Field Championships. TWO up-and-coming female sprinters dominated the 27th Annual Rotary Games, even as a new zonal champion was crowned yesterday.

The Games, exclusively for teams in Port of Spain and Environs, brought together athletes from various primary schools, competing in 40 track events at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Central “A” emerged overall champions, amassing 155 points, 16 more than last year’s winners West “B,” who owed much to the exploits of Diamond Vale Government’s Caliyah Wallace; Central “B” finished third on 93 points.

Wallace ruled the roost in the Girls 13-15 division, starting with gold in the 100 metres, beating Shaniqua Williams (East B) and Journee Charles (Central B) into second and third respectively.

Later, she stormed to victory in the 400m ahead of Shenelle Carrington (Central A) and Jada St Hillaire (West A). Wallace completed her domination of the senior girls’ sprints by taking the 200m and anchoring West “B” to victory in the 4x100 metres relay.

Running for West “A” in the Girls Under-13 division, Shaniqua Bascombe of Maraval RC won the 100 metres from Peneil John (West B) and Reneisha Andrews (East A).

In the 400m, she was once again ahead of John, with Octavia Cambridge of Central “A” in third; and Bascombe made it three of three, taking the 200 metres ahead of Andrews ( East A) and Kishanti Alcantara (North A).

However, she was denied a clean sweep when Peneil John anchored West “B” to victory in the 4x100 relay, leaving Bascombe and West “A” with the silver, while East “A” got the bronze medals. Jabari Fevecque of Richmond Street Boys was another standout, winning both the 100 and 200 metres for Central “A” in the 13-15 Boys division.

Sports Minister Brent Sancho and Wendell Mottley, TT’s 1964 Olympic silver-medallist both took time off to witness some of the events.

The next major primary school athletics event at the Hasely Crawford Stadium will be the National Primary Games on March 20..

Massy Foundation invests in youth sports
Published: Saturday, July 4, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Gaston Aguilera, chairman of The Massy Foundation hands cheque to Lawford Dupres,
Rotary Games Chair, at Rotary Club of Port-of-Spain.

Recognising the importance of investing in the youth of T&T through sport, The Massy Foundation donated $40,000 recently to the Rotary Club of Port-of-Spain 27th Annual District Games for Primary schools in Port-of-Spain and environs.

The athletic meet which took place at the Hasely Crawford Stadium earlier this year, brought over 800 primary school children to the venue for a day of fun, camaraderie and keen competition. Over the years the event has been actively supported by dedicated parents, school officials and well wishers.

This year an added feature at the Games was the involvement of special needs and differently-abled children in competitive races. Gaston Aguilera, chairman of The Massy Foundation stated that, “The Massy Foundation felt it necessary to be part of this venture.” He added, “It is important for children to participate in sports, as it helps build character, strength and a great deal of self discipline. All of these attributes can be applied in the journey of life.”

On receiving the cheque, Lawford Dupres, Rotary Games Chair, Rotary Club of Port-of-Spain said, “We were delighted that the Massy Foundation could be part of the Games which are so important for the youngsters to showcase their talent.” He added: “To undertake such an event requires a great deal of funding so that without the help of corporate citizens like The Massy Foundation the Games would not have been possible.”
