just talking my talk here. The Houthis are Zaidis or 'fiver' shiites. Even though they carry the name 'shiites' the zaidis are actually more similar to sunnis than to the 'twelver' shiites - virtually all the shiites outside of yemen. So even though the media would say over and over that the houthis are iran-backed  sort of implying that it is okay for saudi to be backing a horse in the race too...twist your jaw when you repeat that. It is definitely not the same type of support.
so i is definitely no expert on international law or the laws of war or anything, but I does wonder how the UN or the 'world' does come to decide when is okay for one country to fly in the sky and send down rockets inside another? what make it okay for the us to fire rockets and all but kill ghadaffi all of a sudden?
I dunno B...if is one thing that IS got right is that it don't really have no justice in international law and the only justice is to kill or be killed.

Silly that anyone would still be questioning the jurisdiction of the UN in international affairs.

Kounty, de Arab League forming a task force to take out de Houthis. Maybe the Iran connection is superficial but seem like they taking this opportunity for some ethnic cleansing; get rid of a troublesome domestic opponent?

There was a piece in the Economist a few weeks back about the consequences of World War One and the disillusion of the Ottoman Empire (the last Caliphate). The article suggested the roots of the disorder in the Middle East stemmed from this collapse. And the fallout continues.

Seeker, maybe de middle east need a new King Caliph?

Ribbit, this dude did his PhD at Yale, lives in Tennessee and IS called for his killing, so very much an American islamic scholar, but I think he went a little more into the role of the west in the shaping of the middle east today after WW1 as you point out.

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr: Anger at execution of top Shia cleric

Saudi Arabia's execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr has sparked anger and protests in Shia communities across the region.

Shia-led Iran, Sunni-led Saudi Arabia's main regional rival, has led the official condemnation of the execution.

Protests have taken place in Saudi Arabia's Shia-majority Eastern Province, in Bahrain and several other countries.

Sheikh Nimr was a vocal supporter of mass protests in the province in 2011.

He was a prominent, outspoken cleric who articulated the feelings of those in Saudi Arabia's Shia minority who feel marginalised and discriminated against, the BBC's Middle East editor Alan Johnston reports.

He was among 47 people put to death on Saturday after being convicted of terrorism offences.
