Dear WNT coaching staff, perhaps you've noted that Colombia has a goalkeeping concern. Taborda (the coach) lacks confidence top to bottom in his keepers.

Castaño, who started the opening WC game versus Mexico is technically suspect. Her failure to deal with a corner kick moved her from the starting lineup. Wrong body position, poor footwork etc. ... made a mockery of it. If for some reason she's in goal, our women should be looking to capitalize on her issues with reading flighted balls.

Some background ...

In less than a year, Taborda has relied on at least six (6) different goalkeepers for camps and tournaments. Since his options are limited, he's settled on stimulating competition in the position. At one point, he even called a keeper on the verge of retirement back into action.

Following Colombia's elimination from the WC, he's made yet another change. Catalina Perez, the University of Miami keeper who started against the US in the Round of 16 (Colombia's last WC match), has been replaced. You'll recall her expulsion from the game at the start of the second half, thus making way for Castaño (who had started the opener v. Mexico) to play again.

Perez was the third goalkeeper used during the WC. Sepulveda (who accumulated yellow cards in the second match (versus France) and third match (versus England) offers good positioning, effective shot blocking and reasonably safe hands, and is leaps and bounds better than Castaño. She's also more experienced having been at 2 prior World Cups. She's the keeper you are likely to face on July 14.

The new keeper (Forero) coming into the team, is a former University of Miami goalie who transferred to Barry University seeking a better playing situation. She's still in college at Barry, but not a starter. She has previous YNT and NT experience, and up until prior to the WC was in the provisional WC squad before final cuts were made. Her inclusion for Pan Ams signifies the extent of his concern. (Recall Perez had a reasonably composed first half versus the US and then came the red card minutes after taking the field, and sadly that was that!). Interesting thing is that both keepers were at the University of Miami at the same time, prior to Forero leaving.

Because the Pan Am squad max is 18, Taborda had to cut WC squad members. Aside from the GK, he removed three forwards, a defender and a midfielder. None of the cuts go to the core of how Colombia plays, so how to plan for them should be clear. What they will present is predictable.

The players cut are Yisela Cuesta, Laura Cosme, Manuela Gonzalez, Lina Granados, Carolina Arbelaez and the keeper mentioned above. Cuesta had a corbeaux sweat at the WC, and the others (aside from Perez) didn't see action.

Anyhow, first there is Argentina.

Good question. If they are at a location other than the athletes village that could mean $$$. But who knows if the commute from downtown TO to the stadium justifies not staying at the village.

Pan Am: Mexico comes to town ready
By Steve Milton (The Hamilton Spectator).

Although they got together for an expanded Under-20 camp a couple of months ago, the Canadian women's Pan Am soccer team spent their first full practice day together on Tuesday.

The Mexican women's team, which practised earlier in the day, has about three-quarters of their starters who have been together for eight months.

Only three members of Canada's team were on the roster for the Women's World Cup, which just concluded, but at least eight of the Mexicans played in the Canada2015 tournament.

"We were together, at least 15 of us, in Mexico City for eight months," says midfielder Christina Murillo Ruiz.

"We are taking the Pan Am Games very seriously."

Murillo is American-born and raised and postponed her senior year of eligibility at University of Michigan to play for the land of her heritage. She is a former college teammate of Canadian team members Nkem Ezurike and Shelina Zadorsky, and is one and one of a small handful of American-born players on the Mexican team.

"My college coach, Greg Ryan, is an ex-coach (2005-07) of the U.S. team and he talked to me about playing for Mexico because my style is more similar to Mexico's," she said after Tuesday's practice.

"He thought I'd have a better opportunity in Mexico and I have had better opportunities."

And what is that Mexican style of play that she personifies?

"I feel like we get a little more freedom, that you can be a little more creative as opposed to American style, which is a lot about athleticism," Murillo says. "And clearly that style works for them, where ours is more about individual play with technical work ... it's not so mechanical. It looks more like a South American football team."

She says that she and the other American-born players "have adapted to the culture of Mexico. It's a very rich culture and I'm more of a part of it now, and I'm glad."

Mexico, known as Tricolor, is not in Canada's pool for the round-robin, and faces Trinidad-Tobago, whom they had to beat in overtime to qualify for the World Cup, Argentina and strong Colombia.

According to Leonardo Cuellar, who has coached Mexico for 17 years, any three teams in the tournament could be the medallists.

"We earned a bronze medal in the previous Games (Guadalajara, 2011), so the intention is to step again onto the podium," he says. "We're hungry to have a good performance.

"Colombia is good, Argentina is preparing well, Costa Rica just had a great World Cup and had that whole team here. And Brazil won the silver medal four years go.

"It's going to be a very even, attractive tournament for fans in Canada."

Good morning, coaches and ladies. Leh we vibes it up lil bit with a look @ your opponent. Some player-specific details will follow in the coming hours as time permits.

However, for now, you should know that in their final training session yesterday at McMaster, Argentina worked specifically on free kicks, corners and counterattacking situations. In addition, the midfield and forwards reviewed attacking patterns of play. They didn't go long. Just under an hour, in light of today's match.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/DANmkvjnbF8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/DANmkvjnbF8</a>

Have a look at Alana García, Augustina Barroso and @karenvénica first decide on what the prize should be in a crossbar challenge, and then go at it. The prize: an asado. If yuh eat meat, yuh would like asado. García, Barroso and Vénica all play on the same club team. More on that later.

Game day folks for the Women this afternoon versus Argentina at 2:05 PM EST
The CBC TV network is carrying the games howver the mandate is to cover their Canadian goings on  :bs:
So in saying that they release the video feed at each venue to the World howver whether another country picks up our full match remains to be seen. I just checked our programming guide and the game is not showing locally. I just checked the Pan Am web site and their appears to be no live stream.  :banginghead:

In saying that please look at the internet at Argentina's television networks to see if any are picking the feed up. I heard a rumour that Mexican TV is carrying their feed so maybe they will carry ours. Somebody needs to put their cyber detective skills to work to find those who aren't going to the match a feed.

The Women are wearing their Red kits today as an FYI for those who are going. Anyone who has tickets and wants to post where you are sitting I will try and come over and chat. Myself and family are on the East side in Section 114, row 114, seats 17 - 22. If I don't make it over to you then come see us.

Hope to meet a few forumites today.

Go Soca Warrior Women Gooooooo :wavetowel: :wavetowel:

A bit about Argentina

Some of the players who participated in Argentina's failed World Cup qualifying effort that lead to them qualfying for Pan Ams have been dropped. They were present at a recent camp, but Olarticochea (the coach) decided not to include them to play in Hamilton. According to my notes, six players fall in to this category. Two from River, one from UAI, one from San Lorenzo, one from Boca and one from San Lorenzo. Anyhow, they are not today's concern, but their absence reinforces the comments below regarding Olarticochea's approach to play.

He's been in the position for about 8 months, and has adopted a playing style that differs from Nicosia, the coach he replaced after WC qualifying. Olarticochea, who some will remember as a former NT WC winning player, will look to engage in build-up play that involves the GK a fair amount. He has a preference for his players probing with patience, keeping the ball on the ground, occasionally using aerial passes to spring attackers in behind. In all of this, the idea is to draw the opponent open out while protecting possession.

Having dropped players, it's interesting that he's included Maria Belen Potassa to contribute to the forward line. She wasn't a participant in WC qualifying last year, but has appeared previously at the 2007 WC, and two junior WCs. (2006 and 2008 U20 WC). Somewhat a legendary player in Argentina. Potassa is slender, wiry, committed to getting to the ball. Likes to attack through the central channel to engage center backs. Has reasonable physical presence that we should be able to handle. She's also a very good volleyer of the ball.

Potassa also plays at the same club (UAI Urquiza) as the women in the crossbar challenge. Same club ... means we should think player chemistry. And, on that note, there are also seven players in this squad from Boca [Brusca (defender), Ghigo (defender), Gomez Ares (midfielder), Minning (GK), Oviedo (forward), Santana (midfielder) and Vallejos). Funny thing: Potassa had a stint at Boca prior to returning to UAI. Again, player chemistry.

Expect Vallejos (midfielder) to skipper this squad. She's done so before and she's the oldest of the core of four players (including Potassa mentioned above) with significant tournament experience. Vallejos has been involved at the 2003 and 2007 WCs and the 2008 Olympic tournament. The other two are Minning (was on the 2007 WC roster, but didn't play; was also at 2006 U20s) and Brusca.

At 30, Vallejos is the oldest player on the squad. Potassa is approaching 27, Minning is 28. Practically everyone else is 21, 22, 23 or thereabout.

Yael Oviedo (midfielder mentioned above) is not physically imposing but she is skillful. She has lots of playing personality. Hits with her left foot. Very tenacious player. Has scored a ton of goals at club level. Both she and Potassa (forward mentioned above) are comfortable scoring with headers.

Argentina is vulnerable if we play between their lines rather than preserving the ball in front of them. If we insert players in those critical available spaces, problems can be created for them.

Women Warriors face Argentina in Pan Am opener.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women footballers will face Argentina today in their opening match at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. Despite almost missing the competition, the team will have high hopes considering their preparation for the tournament.

The players have been active in the past month preparing for Toronto, while participating in the inaugural Women's Premier League at home. Apart from league action with their franchise teams, the "Women Warriors" have also warmed up against South American opposition with the Pan Am Games in mind.

They won 2-0 against a South American select team at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on June 30 in a match arranged by The Brazil Link (TBL) Sport Management Company in order to prepare them for the opposition in the group stages of the Games.

Both goals came either side of the half from Kennya "Yaya" Cordner and goal-poacher Mariah Shade. The South Americans were made up of players from Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela and coached by Dede, the Brazilian assistant coach of WPL team CNGC Rush.

Sheldon Phillips and Ross Russell saw it as the ideal opportunity to prepare the local women especially considering the limited resources of the Federation. TBL were also able to transport the players and supporters and organise the match officials’ fees.

Coach Dede has wished his players Janine Francois, Ahkeela Mollon and Mariah Shade all the best and success at the tournament. T&T open their account against Argentina today at the Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium in Toronto from 2.05 p.m.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Mexican soccer player off Pan Am team with chickenpox
FoxSports

TORONTO (AP) A player for Mexico's women's soccer team has been pulled from the Pan Am Games team after being diagnosed with chickenpox.

The Mexican Football Federation said Friday that Veronica Charlyn Corral Ang is being replaced by Nancy Guadalupe Antonio Lopez. Ang started showing symptoms including a fever and lesions Monday and alerted sports authorities. Tests conducted at the athletes' village medical clinic in Toronto confirmed two days later that she had chickenpox. A spokesman for the games, Teddy Katz, says Ang is in ''self-isolation'' until the contagious period ends Sunday.

He says Ang's teammates are also being assessed but that most have been vaccinated or have already had chickenpox and are not considered susceptible.

Katz says public health officials are helping to manage and monitor the situation.

Corral is a starter for Mexico. Played against us in the WC qualifiers and led their line at the WC. Unfortunate timing for them coming down with chickenpox; presumably one problem less for us.

In the women's tournament today, Brazil trounced Ecuador 7-1  ... following up on Canada's 5-2 victory over the Ecuadorans a few days ago.

Canada lost to Costa Rica 2-0. Costa Rica lost their first match 3-0 to Brazil.

After having lost 1-0 to Colombia, Mexico defeated Argentina 3-1.

Canada lost to Costa Rica 2-0. Costa Rica lost their first match 3-0 to Brazil.

After having lost 1-0 to Colombia, Mexico defeated Argentina 3-1.

With Canada losing to Costa Rica last evening and playing the almighty Brazil on Sunday it looks like the Canadians are going home. I know the ball is round and any given day anyone can beat anyone however Canada has brought a much younger inexperienced squad to the Pan Am games. The team looked out of sorts last evening & with Buchannan and Lawrence back at school in West Virginia they will be in tough against Brazil. Costa Rica plays Ecuador and should grab 3 points. So in group B my prediction will be Brazil & Costa Rica going through to the semi's however if Canada manages a win they will top the group as head to head is the 1st factor when two teams are tied and then Costa Rica would be going home having lost to Brazil (assuming they beat Ecuador)

In the group of death  ;D as it stands right now if Trinidad can beat Mexico they will move on. Columbia should beat Argentina and take 1st place in the group however in the recent 2014 Copa América Femenina Argentina and Columbia drew nil nil. All time vs Columbia they are 2 wins , 2 loses & 1 draw.
This group is wide open as there are a lot of what if's. Trinidad could win the group if Argentina was to beat Columbia couple with a a TnT win over Mexico.

Trinidad must win as a tie does them no good. Anyways I know where I will be on Saturday afternoon. So the CBC Network decided to air the Brazil vs Costa Rica game on Sports Net 1 yesterday afternoon before the Canadian game due to public outcry so that gave me hope that our game will be aired on Saturday afternoon. live on Sports Net 1. However during the Canadian broadcast they mentioned that they are only airing Canada's group on Sunday and not Group A (so we get the shaft again :bs:)

I am sure the Mexico Deportive will air the game so you all will have to find a steam again  :cursing: last minute as usual  :bs: . We who live here in the big smoke are just dumbfounded that the big events like football , basketball , baseball we cannot watch the matches live on one of our many specialty sports stations we have.

In taking with a good friend in the business he advised that CBC opted not to collaborate with the other specialty sports stations for the games  :frustrated: :frustrated: however the next ones will be .... really come on CBC  :pissedoff: :pissedoff: :banginghead: :banginghead:

Anyways my rant for the day.

Go Soca Women Warrior's Go !!!!!!!!

They are supposed to be in summer school. The WV coach has a long time relationship with the CSA as she has had many National team players come through her school over the past number years. The WV coach realizes the big picture for these girls as ultimately it is about an education / career in a chosen field as let’s face it women's footie aren’t making one the breadwinner  :frustrated: a source close to me just called me and said that both Buchanan & Lawrence will be back for Sunday's game. To me this is a panic move as they won’t beat or tie Brazil with those two ladies backs. No disrespect to them as they are very good players and are mainstays in Canada's line up for another cycle or two. It’s the surrounding cast that supports them that are the issue. When my network of friends advises me something regarding the CSA WNT its money in the bank.
