Kalicharan shines in North-South Classic

Kirstan Kallicharan slammed an unbeaten 114 to power North to an exciting three-wicket victory over South in the Vasha Foods Under-19 North-South Classic on Monday night at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

The East Zone batsman slammed 14 fours and two sixes off just 103 balls to lead North to 290 for seven wickets in 48.2 overs in reply to South's 289 for seven off 50 overs, which was set up by Cephas Cooper's un beaten 114 off 125 balls.

Kallicharan came to the crease with his team in trouble at 87 for five after losing Keegan Simmons (14), Amir Jangoo (19), Brandon Maharaj (0) and Saeed Mohammed cheaply.

At that stage South would have fancied their chances of making light work of the opposition as wily spinner Varendra Jagroop grabbed two wickets with assistance from Bryan Boodram and Jonathan Williams who started the slide with one apiece.

But Kallicharan found a useful partner in Joshua De Silva who made a well-played 37 with four fours.

The pair put on 89 for the sixth wicket which took the score to 176 for six in 37.6 overs before De Silva was run out.

However, his dismissal let in Renaldo Lezama who teamed up with Kallicharan to put on a match-winning partnership of 105 runs and place North on the brink of victory before he too was run out for 36.

Earlier opener Cooper struck 14 fours and a huge six and carried his bat through the innings to help his team to a good total.

He shared a 97-run opening stand with Dejourn Charles (47) before joining with Jeron Maniram (27) to post 55 for the fifth wicket.

North's Kallicharan was named Man-of-the-Match and Best Batsman while his colleague Akil Seetal copped the bowling equivalent, and South's Kalawan snatched the prize for the outstanding fieldsman.

It was the second straight victory by the North team in the classic series having defeated South last week in the Under-17 clash.

The Under-15 North-South match takes place today at NCC in Balmain starting at 2:30 p.m.

Summarised Scores

South 289-7 (50 overs) (Cephas Cooper 114 n.o., Dejourn Charles 47, Jeron Maniran 27, Cclevon Kalawan 27; Akil Seetal 2/42, Cavan Byrne 2/66) vs North 290-7 (48.2 overs) (Kirstan Kallicharan 114 n.o., Jordan Warner 39, Joshua De Silva 37, Renaldo Lezama 36; Varendra Jagrup 2/46) -North won by three wickets.

Kallicharan wants to dethrone Barbados

Published on Jul 3, 2015, 8:35 pm AST
http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150703/sports/kallicharan-wants-to-dethrone-barbados

The Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 team finished fifth at last year’s West Indies Cricket Board Under-17 Regional tournament but a deep batting line-up and balanced bowling attack this time around have instilled the team with a great deal of confidence heading into this year’s competition.

T&T are expected mount a serious challenge for the title with Kirstan Kallicharan, Saiba Batoosingh, Cephas Cooper and Keagan Simmons in the side.

The foursome dominated the domestic schools cricket competition and was also in good form in the BG T&T InterZone youth competitions and are also part of the T&T Under-19 contingent that will contest the Regional Under-19 championships later this month.

Young Red Force captain, Kirstan Kallicharan noted that the ammunition at his disposal will make it difficult for Barbados to retain their title in Tobago over the next two weeks.

“The strong points I saw in this team is the batting and our opening bowlers. The opening bowlers gave us a good start in the nets here even though we did not have any match practice but in the nets you saw that they are improving in their game and the top seven batsmen are very strong so we have depth in our batting,” said Kallicharan.

He continued, “The bowlers are very adaptable and they can be used in different situations such as in the power-plays and in the death. I think we have a really all-round team that can go on to win the tournament.”

“The beginning of the camp was great and by the end I think you could see a difference in the team. I was telling coach that we achieved our goals at the end of the camp such as improving our game and I think it helped us a lot to develop our cricketing skills,” Kallicharan noted.

“The team has bonded well in the camp which is a great thing for us. Last year we did not do to well but this year will be different because the guys want to go out there and play hard and smart cricket. The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board has given us everything such as ensuring we were mentally and physically prepared so I guess we have to go out there and do the job now,” he added.

“There is a bit of pressure for us but at the end of the day we know we have to go out there and do our jobs. It is going to be hard for us not in the first tournament but in the second one because whatever happens in the first tournament is going to transfer into the second tournament and that is either going to make us or break us. We just have to stay strong and the other guys in the team have to keep on working hard and keep their focus,” said Kallicharan.

Kallicharan and Thurton selected for WI U-15 team

All-rounder Kirstan Kallicharran and middle order batsman Crystian Thurton are Trinidad and Tobago’s two representatives in a 14-member WICB Under-15 Invitational squad announced yesterday by the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB’s) selection panel for a tour of the United Kingdom later this month.

The tour, which runs from August 21-31, has been organised following an invitation from the England Barmy Army Colts.

“The tour has the potential to become an annual event depending on its success this year,” said the WICB’s Manager, Cricket Operations Roland Holder.

“This will provide our younger players with the opportunity to showcase their skills against their peers from another country. It will serve as a great tool for talent identification and development for our 15-year-old players.”

The tour includes a series of limited-overs matches comprising 50 overs-a-side, 45 overs-a-side and Twenty20 including an opportunity to play at the spiritual home of the game, Lord’s, against the Chris Gayle Academy on Monday, August 24.

“There is a lot of excitement about the emerging West Indies talent that will be on display and this has added something extra to the normal fixture schedule,” said Mark Stear, the director of the England Barmy Army Colts.

“We hope that this is the start of an annual invitation to the West Indies Under-15s.”

The captain of the WICB Under-15 Invitational squad will be named at a later date.

SQUAD: Collin Barlow, Joshua Bishop, Kilano Brathwaite, Dane Edwards, Johnnel Eugene, Kirstan Kallicharran, Joshua Persaud, Nico Reifer, Dominik Samuels, Raewin Senior, Kevin Sinclair, Crystian Thurton, Sanjay Williams, Nyeem Young

Team Management Unit: Robert Samuels (head coach), Courtney Walsh (manager), Floyd Reifer (Assistant Coach), Beverly Nelson (Physiotherapist)

Kallicharan hits 91 vs Guyana
BRIJ PARASNATH Friday, August 5 2016

Kirstan Kallicharan produced another inspirational knock that pushed Trinidad and Tobago U-19s to 289 for the loss of nine wickets in 107 overs on the first day of their third round Regional Championships match against defending champions Guyana at the Sion Hill playing field yesterday in St Vincent.

Kallicharan played a captain’s knock as he batted resolutely and revived his team’s fortunes only to fall short of his second hundred of the tourney.

The 16-year-old right-hander stroked ten fours off 226 balls before he was caught by Raymond Perez for 91 off the bowling of Malcolm Hubbard with the score at 170 for five after 76.3 overs.

He had joined Cephas Cooper after openers Keagan Simmons (1) and Dejourn Charles (9) were dismissed.

With Cooper, who made 17, Kallicharan posted 26 for the third wicket and then added a further 68 with vice-captain Saiba Batoosingh (16) and 49 with Bryan Boodram (19).

Joshua DaSilva took charge of proceedings after the captain departed and treated the Guyanese bowlers with scant respect especially Sherfane Rutherford who he hammered for 18 runs in his return to bowl late in the afternoon. With two sixes and six fours, DaSilva raced to 60 before he was caught by Hubbard off Sylus Tyndall who had dismissed Cooper earlier in his first spell.

Jonathan Bootan made 19 while Jabari Mills and Jarlanie Seales have so far shared an unbroken 52-run tenth wicket partnership and remained the not out batsmen on 21 and 23 respectively.

Kallicharan touted as the next Lara

May 19, 2014

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/school-boy-kirstan-kallicharan-touted-as-next-brian-lara-after-unbeaten-404-1518303

His name rings a bell. For those who loved the great West Indian team of the Seventies and Eighties, the name Alvin Issac Kallicharran rekindles memories of a nuggety left-hander, whose stylish batting style and appetite for big runs thrilled the purist. Thirty-four years after the legendary West Indian played his last Test match, another Kallicharan is making cricket headlines in the West Indies. On May 11, Trinidad and Tobago's Under-15 captain Kirstan Kallicharan scored an unbeaten 404 in a 35-over under-14 school match in Port-of-Spain. He came in at No. 3 and in the 10th over. In May last year, he had smashed Brain Lara's high-school record.

Kirstan, turning out for the Vishnu Boys Hindu College in a Secondary Schools Cricket League U-14 quarterfinal against Valencia High School, clobbered 44 fours and 31 sixes. He scored his century off just 35 balls. The Hindu College Boys won by 459 runs after Valencia, with no stomach for a fight, were shot out for a paltry 89 in the 24th over.

Last year in May, Kirstan erased Lara's name from the record books. Lara's long-standing record for the highest individual score in Trinidad and Tobago's Secondary School Cricket League was broken by Kirstan. Playing for Hindu College, Kallicharan scored 194 against Carapichaima East. The innings contained 26 fours and six sixes. Hindu College won by 197 runs but the highlight of the match was Lara's record of 168 going for a toss.

At a time when West Indian cricket has not been known for its Test performances, Kirstan's effort has prompted Trinidad and Tobago Sports Minister Anil Roberts to say that they may have unearthed a new Brian Lara (or may be an Alvin Kallicharran, who scored 12 Test hundreds at an average of 44.43).

Speaking to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, Roberts said, "It not only takes skill and physical strength to deliver such an amazing performance, but clearly this young "phenom" has a level of mental discipline that belies his age."

Roberts said, "This innings reminds me so much of the drive and discipline Brian Lara exhibited while he was at Fatima in the late 80's. I witnessed that first hand as a student and now as Minister, I see Kallicharan clearly signalling that he too, has the potential to become one of the sport's greatest batsmen."

Speaking about the knock in the Trinidad and Tobago Express newspaper, Kirstan said: "At the beginning I was just batting normal, just aiming to make a hundred but when I got to my century I realised I could score more and more and I just continued to bat."

According to Vishnu Boys coach Tarandath Sammy, the 14-year-old also scored a double hundred earlier this season, hitting 215 in an Under-16 game for his school.

Kallicharan stars as East retains U-19 crown.

TT Guardian

KIRSTAN KALLICHARAN underlined his prodigious talent with an extraordinary performance of his allround cricket skills in leading East Zone to a successful defence of their Shell sponsored Under-19 Inter Zone crown against South-East at the National Cricket Centre Ground at Balmain in Couva on Friday.
The batting prodigy, who attends Vishnu Boys College in Caroni, grabbed the lion’s share of individual awards as East, defeated in two Shell Inter Zone finals already this season, finally came good with a comfortable seven-wicket victory to claim their first silverware of 2017.
Just back from an intensive West Indies Cricket Board Under-19 training camp in preparation for the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup, Kallicharan top-scored with an undefeated 62 as East Zone methodically chased down South-East’s total of 178 all out made in 38.2 overs of the 46-Over contest.
East Zone reached the winning target finishing at 182 for the loss of three wickets in 33.4 overs with other valuable batting contributions from Sachin Seecharan (56), and allrounder Aaron Mairam (37) who impressed with both bat and ball.
Kallicharan claimed the prestigious “Man-of-the-Match” honours for his unbeaten knock, and for taking two wickets and two catches when South-East took first strike, while Mairam grabbed the award for the best bowler with his haul of three wickets for 34 runs in eight overs.
South-East, catapulted into their first Shell Inter Zone final of the season mainly through the prolific batting of Cephas Cooper, who struck two consecutive centuries leading up to the final, was again indebted to their opening batsman who made 52.
But the rest of the batting line-up disappointed with only Jack Assoon (27) and Avinash Mahabirsingh (24) making any sizeable contribution, though Justin Gangoo and Brandon Singh both shored up the faltering innings with 18 runs each.
And apart from the consistent and penetrative bowling of East Zone’s Mairam, Te-Shawn Alleyne and Sachin Seecharan joined Kallicharan in claiming two wickets apiece in a clinical dismantling of the South-East batting.

Kallicharan century in vain for WI U-19s

URBAN, South Africa, CMC – Kirstan Kallicharan’s hundred was not enough to prevent West Indies Under-19s from tumbling to a five-wicket defeat to South Africa Under-19s, in the opening unofficial One-Day International of the five-match series here yesterday.
The 17-year-old struck 101 as the Caribbean side, sent in at Chatsworth Stadium, reached 222 for eight off their 50 overs.
Jeavor Royal, batting at number seven, chipped in with a breezy 28 off 32 balls but he and Kallicharan were the only ones to pass 20 as the innings struggled to recover from a poor start.

Kirstan Kallicharan
Fast bowler Thando Ntini, the son of legendary South Africa seamer Makhaya Ntini, was the leading bowler with four for 56.
In reply, captain Raynard van Tonder hammered 131 not out as the hosts coasted to their target in the 42nd over.
Wandile Makwetu supported with 35 and Hermann Rolfes got 28 while seamer Darren Nedd (2-40) and left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop (2-50) picked up two wickets apiece.
The hosts were tottering on 44 for three in the 11th over before van Tonder anchored two stands to rescue the innings.
He struck 18 fours and a six off 133 deliveries, adding 112 for the fourth wicket with Makwetu and another 66 for the fifth wicket with Rolfes.
Earlier, the Young Windies found themselves struggling at 33 for four in the 14th over after Ntini made key strikes at the top of the order.
But Kallicharan, one of the heroes from the last Youth World Cup in Bangladesh, came to his side’s rescue in an innings lasting 106 balls and including 12 fours and two sixes.
He posted 45 for the fifth wicket stand with Alick Athanaze (16), 47 for the sixth wicket with Royal before dominating a 59-run seventh wicket partnership with Bishop who made 16.
Kallicharan then found an ally in Mikyle Louis (14 not out) to put on a hasty 38 for the eighth wicket off 24 deliveries and rally the innings late.
