Morgan, Brewer shine Schools All Stars Basketball

Division MVP Hakeem Morgan of East Mucurapo and International School of Port-of-Spain (ISPS) stand-out Remy Brewer led the T&T Schools’ Basketball Association’s (TTSBA) North Zone All Star Under-17 team to a 55-52 win over East Zone Under-20 champions, St Joseph Secondary, last week in an exhibition match closing the North Zone season.

Morgan, who was largely responsible for East Mucurapo’s capture of yet another Under-17 North Zone league title earlier this month, top scored for the North Zone All Stars with 17 points. Brewer, one of few players to play in all three divisions this season, and who was named MVP for the U-15 and U-20 divisions after guiding helping ISPS the double, contributed with 12 points for the North Zone All Stars. On the opposite end, St Joseph brothers Ahkeel Boyd and Ahkeem Boyd, scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Shakiel Bertram added seven.

The All Star team from the North Zone comprised players from five schools who stood out during the league campaign. East Mucurapo was represented by four players: Morgan, Josiah Best, Tehrek Scott and Isaiah Francis, while ISPS fielded three players in Brewer, Sekou Folie and Ephrain Archer. The other players selected were, Malcolm Douglas and Kobee James (QRC), Israel Daniel (Belmont Boys), Ezekiel Humphrey (South East Port-of-Spain) and Rafer Richardson (Success Laventille Secondary).

Following the conclusion, the respective MVPS and winning schools were awarded medals and trophies for their efforts.

North out plays South All Stars 100-89

Dextroy Manswell and Adrian Joseph did everything they could to upset the party, but even their combined 77-point tally could not prevent their 100-89 loss their South Zone All Stars team suffered at the hands of a North Zone Men’s First Division All Star team at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo on Sunday.

Despite playing for Police, which campaigns in the North Zone, centre Manswell and point-guard Joseph played for the South team during Sunday’s contest.

Three matches were played comprising the best players from the School Basketball Association’s North Zone Under-20 league, the U-16 league, the Women’s Division and the Men’s First Division. They played against an East Zone Under-20 All Star team, San Fernando Secondary for the Under-16 All Star Match and a South Zone Men’s All Star team respectively.

In addition to the matches, dozens of players participated in a three-point shoot-out contest and a slam dunk contest.

On Sunday, the All Star weekend lit up when the best from the North Zone combined against those from the South Zone. Although the North Zone’s All Star team was led in terms of scoring by Akil Paynter and Saiki Guerra, who scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, they still managed a relatively comfortable and an evidently economical win against the South Zone team, which had Manswell and Joseph running riot over the court. Joseph was later named MVP of the match. The dunk-out competition among the men was won by Patrick Scipio, while Jamile King won the three-point shoot-out.

A day prior, the Women’s Division All Stars from the North Zone were divided into two teams. In the end, the ‘A’ team, led by senior national women’s team player, Kielle Connelly, scored a 41-23 win. Connelly scored ten points and was subsequently named the MVP, while Crystal Ann George, winner of the three-point shoot-out, supported with six points. Iyanna Hughes and Alicia Cumberbatch were the top players for the ‘B’ team, scoring nine and six points, respectively.
