2015 IAAF Diamond League Meeting Athletissima Lausanne

The meeting

One City – One great event – One Passion

Athletissima was held for the first time on July 8, 1977 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Lausanne, at the instigation of former 800m runner Jacky Delapierre. Today this meeting belongs to the major events of Lausanne’s Summer season.  In the meantime the organisation has settled in the Stade de la Pontaise, to the north of Lausanne. Since 2010, Athletissima is member of the Diamond League, gathering the most prestigious events.

In 2013 Athletissima published a souvenir album recounting its adventures since its creation in 1977. This album is available from the secretariat of Athletissima.

The 2015 40th edition will take place on July 9 at the Stade de la Pontaise.

>> Discover the 2015 disciplines

Athletissima is not only an athletics meeting. It is also many various activities during the whole year as well as during the few days before the great event:
•    a special training session for young athletics fans;
•    a mini-stars relay for kids between 6 and 16;
•    the opportunity to take part in the UBS Kids Cup;

Athletissima is looking forward to see you come in numbers on July 9, 2015 at the Pontaise.

Press conference with the athletes !

Asafa Powell & Tyson Gay at Diamond League Athletissima Lausanne 2015 Press Conference

Kariem Hussein, David Rudisha, Allyson Felix, Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay,
Jasmin Stowers, Sharika Nelvis, Pedro Pablo Pichardo, Renaud Lavillenie.

Kariem Hussein, 400m hurdles

"I’m always my own doctor."

Kariem Husssein, medical student who, being ill a while ago, stayed in bed for an entire week.

David Rudisha, 800m

"Everything started for me here in Lausanne."

David Rudisha, triple winner at Athletissima – he started off as a college-boy – will be looking to win a fourth time on Thursday.

Allyson Felix, 200m or 400m

"After Athletissima, I’ll choose whether I’ll run the 200m or the 400m at the Beijing World Championship in August. I’m the only athlete to compete on these two distances."

In China Allyson Felix, SB in 21’’98 on 200m at Doha, will also compete for the 4x400m USA relay.

"I don’t know who has the Athletissima meeting record on 200m." Nice to know for Allyson Felix, it’s Jamaican Merlene Ottey, running in 22’’07 in 1995.

Asafa Powell, 100m

"The younger generation will have to wait a little more, we are still very fast."

The Jamaican also spoke about Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin. "Is Gatlin invincible ? He thinks so, but I think he can be beaten."

"I think it’s great to have the best sprinters in the same race in a meeting. It allows us to improve aspects of our race for the Championships or Olympics to come."

Tyson Gay, 100m

"We’ve been running together for a while (with Powell and Gatlin). We aren’t going to step down yet for the younger generation."

"I’m looking forward to run Thursday at Athletissima, to compete against the best. It’s a good thing, to face one another tomorrow."

"Can Gatlin be beaten ? Absolutely but to do so you have to be in your best physical shape."

"Our generation of sprinters has committed mistakes, but we mustn’t be compared to what has happened in the past. Ok, we made mistakes but we have worked hard to come back to our best level; this deserves respect, for our sport too."

Jasmine Stowers, 100mH

"The problem in the US is that we have 8 out of 10 top hurdlers." "Dawn Harper-Nelson made an amazing accomplishment, winning the USA nationals."

"Dawn Harper-Nelson could be a mentor for us, for the preparation of the Olympics."

Sharika Nelvis, 100mH

"Every time we [Jasmine and Sharika] race each other, we push each other. It’s a motivation."

"The 100m is about speed as for the 100mH is all footwork."

"She [Dawn Harper-Nelson] is a very friendly person."

Pedro Pablo Pichardo, triple jump

"When I compete here in Lausanne, I felt good. My sensations here are always good."

"I’m not thinking about the world record yet. For now I’m focussing on hard work."

"The Cuban tradition is a key motivation for the athletes, most of them jumping over 17m. Teddy Tamgho also is a big influence."

Renaud Lavillenie, pole vault

"I keep repeating that I’m not invincible."

A Pole Vault competition is never won until it’s over.

Renaud Lavillenie mentions his defeat in Paris last Saturday. "I would like to find a meeting without anyone expecting me to do a big performance."

Star TT trio in ‘Diamond’ action today
By ASHFORD JACKMAN Thursday, July 9 2015 (T&T Newsday)

STAR T&T ATHLETES: Keshorn Walcott, Keston Bledman & Jehue Gordon

NEWLY-CROWNED national men’s sprint champion Keston Bledman will run in the metre race today, when he gets into the blocks at the IAAF Diamond League Meet in Lausanne, Switzerland. Bledman is one of three TT athletes registered to compete at the world-famous Athletissima, but the sheer quality of the field for the men’s century will ensure that event commands the most attention.

Each of the seven men in the provisional list is capable of winning on his day.

They include American Justin Gatlin, who has the world-leading time this year of 9.74 seconds; his compatriot Tyson Gay is next on 9.79, and Michael Rodgers will also be there; then there is Jamaican Asafa Powell, who ran 9.81 on Saturday last in the Paris leg of the Diamond League series.

Bledman joined the list of sub-ten runners for the season when he recorded a 9.86 in taking the title at the NGC/NAAA Open Championship two weekends ago. Earlier in June, he had run a very close second to Gay at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York (10.13 to Gay’s 10.12), only to be disqualified when on review it was determined he had false-started earlier.

Bledman’s best recorded time in the series came in the opening event in Doha, when he clocked 10.01 in crossing the line 3rd.

Meanwhile, the odds will favour Keshorn Walcott landing among the medals in the Men’s Javelin; the Olympic champion set a meet record of 84.84 metres at the National Open, just weeks after twice re-setting his own national mark in successive Diamond League meets.

Walcott set a new mark of 86.20 in Rome, only to push it further (86.43) in Birmingham. On both occasions, he earned bronze for his efforts, and the men who have stood between him and gold, Kenyan Julius Yego and Vitezslav Vesely of the Czech Republic will both be in the fray on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, unlike his compatriots, Jehue Gordon will still be striving for his first top-three Diamond League 2015 finish in Lausanne. Gordon stumbled and did not finish the race in Eugene, Oregon; in Rome, he was 7th of nine runners in 49.22, his best for the season thus far.

Clearly not in his best shape as he prepares to defend his World Championship title, Gordon will need to get in under 49 seconds to give his confidence a boost before Beijing.

His main rivals are American Michael Tinsley who has a season’s best of 48.34 and the European champ, Kariem Hussein (48.96) who will have the support of his home fans in Lausanne.

Whatever happens, the TT threesome will have a clearer picture of where they stand, going into the World Championships in Beijing.

Big throw there from Keshorn. Finally a throw that puts him up there with the elite and a PR to match being an Olympic champion.

Don't mind Bledman's 10.03. He is almost there. Once he works on his mechanics, he will do well.

Walcott is now in the ELITE. Not surprised. I knew it was coming.

Whatever Jehue and his management team have been doing this season, they have been getting his preparations to defend his world championship title totally wrong.

As it is it is possible he may not even make the final at Worlds after running rounds unless he improves dramatically between now and Beijing. There's just over a month left to go.

In fact the two Gordons have been disappointing so far this season but Jehue's performances are now becoming embarrassing.

Anyway on the bright side congrats to Keshorn on a new national record once again and he now moves to 2nd in the World Top List.

Decent run from Bledman in the 100m this evening but we need him to run a few sub-10s outside of T&T to shut up all the doubters who believe that he can only run sub-10s (9.8xs) in PoS.

And here is video of Bledman's 100m race.

Justin Gatlin 100m 9.75 destroys Powell and Gay DL Lausanne 2015

Bledman did not have a good start or else he could have run his first legal sub-10 outside of T&T for 2015.
Rodgers and Bledman ran the same time of 10.03 but Rodgers got the nod for 4th place.

Hopefully the sub-10s outside of T&T will start coming regularly for Bledman as we get closer to Beijing as well as top 3 placings against strong elite competition like today's. Once Bledman sarts doing that he will be a serious medal contender in Beijing.

All we are saying is that Jehue does not look like he will even make the final right now. Its only 6 weeks to go to Beijing and he is not even in the top 15 in the World keeping in mind that it is usually 8 of those in the top 10 list who make it thru to the final. (http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/hurdles/400-metres-hurdles/outdoor/men/senior/2015)

In 2013 Jehue was in the top 10 list for most of the season and went to number 1 after his World Championships win. (http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/hurdles/400-metres-hurdles/outdoor/men/senior/2013)

Jehue is yet to run a sub-49 time this season and it will probably require a sub-48 time to win the title in 6 weeks time.

If we are being realistic the signs are most worrying regardless of all the peaking at the right time talk.

Keshorn gets stronger
Published: Friday, July 10, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

From left, Justin Gatlin from the USA, Tyson Gay from the USA and Asafa Powell from Jamaica compete in the men’s 100m race at the Athletissima IAAF Diamond League athletics meeting in the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday. AP PHOT

Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott set a new national record for the fifth time in less than a year when he won the Javellin event at the Diamond League Meeting Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland yesterday. Walcott’s throw of 90.16m was a meet record as well as the second furthest throw in the world this year behind Kenyan Juklius Yego’s 91.39m in Brimingham, England last month. It was a significant improvement over his previous personal best of 86.43m, also set in Birmingham.

Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, president of the National Association of Athletic Administration Ephraim Serrette credited Walcott’s coach Ismael Lopez Mastrapa for bringing out the best in his athlete. “Keshorn was outstanding,” he said. “It appears that his programme is working well as he continues to improve. He is peaking at right time with the Pan Am games just a few weeks away and the World Championships coming up.”

Meanwhile, national sprint champ Keston Bledman clocked 10.03 to place fifth in the Men’s 100m, finishing behind USA’s Justin Gatlin (9.75), Jamaican Asafa Powell (9.92) and Americans Tyson Gay (9.92) and Mike Rodgers (9.92). Serrette said he felt Bledman had some room for improvement.

“He needs to work on his start. When you are at that level you pay for the slightest mistake,” he said. The event saw three big name rivals in action with Gatlin easily beating his two big-name rivals by clocking 9.75 seconds.

Keshorn Walcott joined the elite 90-metre club, at the Athletissima IAAF Diamond League meet, in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday.

In the very first round of the men's javelin competition, Walcott landed the spear 90.16 metres to smash his own national record, jumping from 59th to 14th on the world all-time list in the process. He also broke the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) record, bettering the 87.20m standard set by Cuba's Guillermo Martinez in 2011.

Walcott had established the previous Trinidad and Tobago record of 86.43m at the Sainsbury's Birmingham Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, in England, on June 7. The 2012 Olympic champion finished third on that occasion.

There was no beating Walcott, yesterday, the 22-year-old field athlete securing his first Diamond League victory with his first-ever 90-metre effort. When the distance was posted on the scoreboard, an exultant Walcott triumphantly raised both arms. The 90.16m monster throw is a new meet record, bettering the 89.94m standard established by world record holder Jan Zelezny, of the Czech Republic, back in 2001.

Silver yesterday went to another Czech Republic thrower, Vitezslav Vesely, the reigning world champion producing an 87.97m effort. And Finland's Tero Pitkamaki bagged bronze at the Athletissima meet with an 87.44m throw. Pitkamaki is seventh on the world all-time list at 91.53m. Three-time Olympic champion Zelezny heads the list with his world record throw of 98.48m.

Walcott is only the 14th thrower to join the exclusive 90-metre club. Understandably satisfied with his superb opening round effort, the Toco athlete only took one more throw in the competition, a third round foul.

Meanwhile, Keston Bledman finished fifth in the Athletissima men's 100 metres dash, the T&T sprinter getting to the line in 10.03 seconds, the same time clocked by fourth-placed Michael Rodgers of the United States.

Another American, Justin Gatlin won in a very fast 9.75 seconds. It was the third time this season he had produced a sub-9.80 run. Jamaican Asafa Powell seized silver in 9.92 seconds, while bronze went to American Tyson Gay, who also clocked 9.92.

T&T's Jehue Gordon finished eighth and last in the men's 400m hurdles in 50.07 seconds. American Bershawn Jackson clocked 48.71 to strike gold, ahead of South Africa's LJ van Zyl (48.92) and Russia's Denis Kudryavtsev (49.01).

Gordon, who will defend his IAAF World Championship title in Beijing, China next month, was disappointed with his performance.

"Terrible race for me. The race got away from me on the backstretch. Running from lane two was not easy and it was cold temperature, but I'm not making excuses. I have to go back to training and work hard. I am the defending champion," Gordon ended, "and I intend to do well in Beijing."

At the World University Games, in Gwangju, Korea, yesterday, University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) athlete, LeSean Noel competed in the semi-final round of the men's 100m event. The T&T sprinter finished sixth in heat two in 10.54 seconds. The top four in each heat advanced to the final. South Africa's Akani Simbine clocked 9.97 to grab gold in the championship race.

On Wednesday, Noel was third in his first round heat in 10.65 seconds, and third in his quarterfinal heat in 10.74. He was eliminated in the opening round of the 200m, after finishing sixth in his first round heat, yesterday, in 21.81.

Another T&T/UTT athlete, Kyle Stanley was fifth in his men's 400m first round heat, on Wednesday, in 51.57 seconds and did not progress to the semis.

Olympic champ joins elite 90m club
By ASHFORD JACKMAN Friday, July 10 2015 (T&T Newsday)

OLYMPIC CHAMPION Keshorn Walcott produced a throw of 90- plus metres on his first attempt, then sat back and watched as his rivals in the Men’s Javelin strove desperately and in vain to match it, at yesterday’s IAAF Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

On a day when most of the pre-meet hype seemed to centre around the strongest Men’s 100-metre field assembled for the year, the Toco-born 22-year-old forced his name into the headlines with that single gold medal-winning effort of 90.16 metres, leaving all his world-ranked rivals in his wake.

Walcott’s feat set several marks. It was the third time he had broken the national record for the year; on June 4th, he produced 86.20m with his sixth and final effort in Rome, taking the bronze medal in the process. Three days later, he reset the mark at 86.43m in Birmingham.

Yesterday’s new mark was a meet record for the Athletissima, and the second-longest throw for 2015; it was also the greatest distance ever achieved by any athlete from the western hemisphere.

Responding to the news, TT Olympic Committee Brian Lewis was ecstatic. “Really great news! It’s great to see Keshorn reaping the rewards of his hard work and discipline. He has one of the best coaches (Cuban Ismael Mastrapa Lopez) in the world. Keshorn has tremendous potential.”

Lewis, speaking from Toronto where he was attending a Pan American Sport Organisation (PASO) meeting added, “He has shown progression since London 2012, and it’s a good performance ahead of the Pan Am and Worlds.”

When Newsday confirmed that Walcott had won, Sports Minister Brent Sancho responded, “I’m extremely elated to know that Keshorn has again improved on his fine display, and we’re hoping that he continues on in this great vein of form that he’s in.”

For the record, the next-best effort, by Vitezslav Vesely of the Czech Republic, was 87.97m, while Finland’s Tero Pitkamaki (87.44) claimed the bronze.

Ephraim Serrette, president of the National Association of Athletics Federations (NAAF) paid credit to Walcott and the team working with him. “I think he’s progressing well. The programme that he’s working with, actually I think they have understood the whole preparation aspect,” he told Newsday. “So he would have started throwing 80, 85, 86 and now (he’s) peaking at a time when he should be doing those type of throws; and getting it in the first throw is even better,” Serrette said, explaining that Walcott is still contending with an ankle injury, so that it might have influenced his decision not to throw again unless necessary.

Serrette added that being selective about the meets in which they compete had contributed significantly to the success of Walcott and female shot putter Cleopatra Borel. “So I think the programme they’re working with is working. If you look at Cleo (Borel), she’s done a 19.26 as well, so they continue to perform at a particular level coming closer to the World Championships. It’s now for them to hold that going into the Pan Am and the World Championships and repeat, or even do better.”

Leader of the People’s National Movement, Dr Keith Rowley, also weighed in on Twitter: “Congratulations Keshorn Walcott on winning gold for T&T @ IAAF Diamond League. What an inspiration to young people!”

While Walcott was ruling over his experienced rivals, it was a disappointing day for the other TT athletes at the Athletissima.

Running in lane six, Keston Bledman finished fifth in the star-studded 100 metres. American Justin Gatlin beat the filed convincingly in 9.75 seconds, while Jamaican Asafa Powell was adjudged to have taken second place after clocking the same time (9.92) as Tyson Gay.

Bledman and Mike Rodgers also dead-heated at 10.03, but the American was adjudged to have been ahead. World champion Jehue Gordon finished eighth and last in the 400 metre Hurdles, running a very slow 50.07 seconds.

On Twitter after the race, a disappointed Gordon stated: “Things didn’t go the way I wanted it to tonight. Know that’s not the kind of shape I’m in but God is good. Once it’s his will it will happen.”

American Bershawn Jackson took the gold in 48.71 seconds, with South African Van Zyl (48.92) and Russia’s Denis Kudryavtsev (49.01) taking the minor placings.

Gatlin shoots down Powell, Gay in 9.75

Too quick for ‘em: Tyson Gay of the USA, left, and Jamaica’s Asfa Powell, right, can’t catch Justin Gatlin from the USA in the men’s 100 metres at the Athletissima IAAF Diamond League meeting in the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday. —Photo: AP

Lausanne— Justin Gatlin easily beat two big-name rivals by clocking 9.75 seconds in the 100 metres at the Athletissima Diamond League meet yesterday.

The in-form Gatlin left runner-up Asafa Powell of Jamaica trailing in 9.92, the same time as his fellow American Tyson Gay in third.

The time was 0.01 outside Gatlin’s world-leading season-best and the 2004 Olympic champion remained unbeaten over 100 since 2013.

Gatlin is increasingly looking like the man to beat at the world championships in Beijing next month as title holder Usain Bolt struggles with a leg injury.

“It’s not a message to anybody,” Gatlin said of his dominating performance. “Usain is a great opponent, so it’s on me to go out and give him the best challenge I can. Hopefully he will be healthy and ready to go for the world championships.”

Though Gay and Powell were faster out of the blocks on a breezy night, Gatlin drew ahead within 30 metres and quickly went clear.

The show impressed Gay, who took the 2007 world title after Gatlin began serving a four-year ban for doping.

“The guy has improved. He’s polished, he’s sharp,” Gay said of his US relay teammate. “He has a lot of confidence and he’s on a roll right now.”

Powell, the former world record-holder, lacked his typical fast start running in the lane to Gatlin’s left.

“I didn’t run like I should. The first part of my race was not all that great,” said Powell, whose 9.81 time at Paris last weekend puts him second in the season rankings.

Also yesterday, Olympic champion Mo Farah of Britain won the 5,000 in his first race since his American coach Alberto Salazar faced doping allegations last month.

Farah approached the finish line punching his chest twice with his right fist and waved his arms wildly as he crossed in 13:11.77.

“This victory is also a way to answer some of the critics regarding my coach that came out lately,” said Farah, who was not implicated in the allegations that Salazar has denied.

Farah was among five 2012 London Olympic gold medalists who won on Thursday, with two showing great form.

Anna Chicherova of Russia cleared a world-leading 2.03 metres in the high jump. Her third attempt at the height was nine centimetres better than her previous best jump in 2015.
