T&T quartet chosen for NBA experience
T&T Guardian Reports.

Four teenage T&T basketballers have been selected to attend the NBA (National Basketball Association) New York Experience in December following the closing of the Digicel Jumpstart Programme at the UWI SPEC in St Augustine, yesterday.

Thirty-five players from around the Caribbean including T&T, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos gained knowledge and experience after working with NBA coaches.

Eight players were selected to attend the NBA New York Experience in New York. The T&T players chosen were small forward Mohammed Elias, 16; small forward/power forward Remy Brewer, 15; power forward Bertrand Shakeil, 16; and point guard/shooting guard Kadeem Greig, 15. Elias and Shakeil both represent the Maloney Pacers, while Greig represents both the Maloney Pacers and Stories of Success. Brewer does not belong to a club, but attends the International School of Port-of-Spain.

The other four players chosen were Yontz Sutton from Bermuda (16), D’Moi Hodge from British Virgin Islands (16), Ghadarno Clarke from Turks and Caicos and Malachy Payne from British Virgin Islands (15).

Two NBA coaches and three NBA legends conducted the course, with the help of numerous local coaches. NBA coaches Troy Justice and William Bayno, along with  NBA legends Tyrone ‘Muggsy’ Bogues,  Adonal Foyle and NBA coach P.J. Carlesimo conducted the programme. The camp, which was supported by Sportsmax, included skill work, defensive techniques, shooting competitions, a tournament among other features.

At the closing ceremony Digicel CEO Sasha Thompson said, “Since inception Digicel has always been an advocate of the promotion and development of professionals in sport. We believe in nurturing our young talent to let them shine on a national and international level. This year we have decided to extend our support to the game of basketball by launching the Digicel Jumpstart Basketball Clinic.”

Garvin Warwick, president of the National Basketball Federation of T&T is optimistic about the future. Warwick said: “Our coaches enjoyed every moment, our kids cherished every experience and this has made me and the Federation extremely excited about the outcome of this initiative by Digicel and Sportsmax.”

He added: “This clinic has given the Federation the jumpstart it needs to start screening our best Under-16 players. Over the last few weeks we were able to select the top 40 kids and therefore it is our intention to keep these kids together. These kids are our future in basketball.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
