Who is our all time great?
« on: July 29, 2015, 10:41:07 AM »
Argentina can boast of Maradona. Brazil- Pele. France- Zidane.
Who is our all time great, transcending generations- Is it Gally Cummings. Russell Latapy- Dwight Yorke.
I guess one has to be internationally known and played at the highest level. I trust now that we are quiet I just want to keep the board alive and the conversation going. Hopefully some of the older posters may come alive once more

I would say Dwight, because he achieved the most overall, played in the WC, the highest level of pro football, many accolades, not to say Latas and Cummings and the rest were not great players but in terms of achievement if we are measuring based on that with a man like Maradonna, i would have to say Dwight... jmho

It would have to be Yorke in the end because he led us to a World Cup and the international fame.

The rest would be "cult" heroes like how Garrincha is in Brazil, but Pele more famous outside.

I going with Latas, but I have only seen clips of Gally.

I putting the first incarnation of Stern John in my top 5 players too.

Latapy.

I'm willing to believe that we may have had comparable players before. Even so I think he wins on longevity. Latas was our best player from the late 80s to the early 2000s. And then of course came back for the 05-06 campaign.
Latas was always the star when he was on the field. Whether he played with Yorke, Nakhid, Dwarika, Faustin or whoever.

Yorke's club achievements are superior but Latas wins for performance for the national team.

I'd say Yorke. I think if Latapy had Dwight's training work ethic, he would have accomplished as much as (or more than) Dwight did.

Yorke's club achievements are unrivalled compared to any other local player, no point in even having that debate. At the national level, that's definitely debatable as you could make a case for Latapy, Stern, Gally, and a handful of others.

I would say Dwight, hands down.  He was born into the era when the open door policy in English and Euro football allowed many talented foreigners to excel at the game.  He had the mind set for the challenge. Latapy and Shaka are also of this era. I would also say Warren Archibald would have made a name for himself. Gally also. I think guys from the 67 PanAm games team could have made it. Reaching the superstar level as Dwight, that I can never tell.

As we have Dwight on the spotlight, there was a guy from Tobago, I think. His name was Richard "train" Stewart. He played for the Regiment and was on that PanAm team. Anybody know of him? Is he still alive?

yorke for all round achievement but for National football Latapy hands down.......lets be honest he carried the team for much of the early/mid 2000s  when the nucleus of  strike squad got old and retired and riches in natural talent seem to simply dry up, he was our engine and we struggled without him, even when dwight came back for 05/6.......2001/2 warriors being a notable exception talent wise..... before the wheels fell off dat campaign ....and still they was ten times better with him in the team. other players just seem to get "better" when he was around and free to operate....was a sight to behold......dwight couldn' do dat

I pity the fool....
