WATCH: Dexter Skeene discusses the Trinidad and Tobago Professional League with Steve David and Narada Wilson
https://www.youtube.com/v/F67O4RUkCBU

Good video.
I must say, I have been watching these shows "Field of Dreams" hosted by Steve David and also "Scoreboard" hosted by George Matheson.
All good and desperately needed on T&T TV. Steve David's show focusing only on football is excellent.
Very informative to hear the analysis by Skeene and Narada and Steve David's feeling of urgency to see results now rather than soon or later. All the episodes were informative. Next persons to be on the show should be:
Flex, Tallman, Hart, Angus Eve, Russell, possibly McComie again, experienced interviewees like Jan, then a few choice less experienced local players like Ball-pest, Plaza etc within a supporting panel to keep the conversation flowing.

Stars face former coach in Pro League action.
T&T Newsday Reports.

NORTH EAST Stars coach Roland Clarke said his players are fired up to meet the club’s former coach Angus Eve when they host St Ann’s Rangers from 4 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium today in Round One Match Day Three of the Digicel Pro League .

Clarke, now in his first stint as a coach of a Pro League team, said, “For me personally, it isn’t a grudge match.

But it is like a personal vendetta for some of the players. Their mind-set is that the game is an avenue for them to express their feelings for how they felt in the past three (seasons).” Clarke, who replaced Eve, at the end of the latter’s three-year contract, said he only learnt of the “grouse” after he took over the team for pre-season.

In 2012, Eve, a former assistant coach to Terry Fenwick at San Juan Jabloteh and to Michael Mc Comie at the now defunct Ma Pau SC, entered his first stint as Pro League coach and led the Sangre Grande-based club to the 2012 Toyota Classic and 2015 TT FA FA Trophy.

Clarke, although relatively unknown, believes he’s “no Johnny- come-lately.” The 50-year-old is a former assistant coach at North East Stars, and also had a spell as technical director of the club’s youth programme, as well as coach of the Reserve and Under-17 teams.

He was also a coach at Joe Public’s Super League and East Zone teams. At present, both North East Stars and Rangers are unbeaten after two League games, occupying second and seventh positions respectively.

North East Stars defeated Club Sando 2-0 and were held to a 4-4 draw with Police, while Rangers tied both their matches 1-1 and 2-2 against Defence Force and Club Sando, respectively.

“It’s about taking it one game at a time,” explained Clarke. “I have some work to do still. As I got deeper into it I realised there are certain weaknesses in the team. Already I am hearing the critics saying that North East Stars bring an exciting brand (of football). But it’s a long season and the players all know we need to continue working and improving.” Also today, defending champions and current leaders Central FC will tackle newcomers Club Sando, for a second time in five days, from 6 pm at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

This after the “Couva Sharks” defeated the former Super League champions 4-0 to reach the final of the First Citizens Cup on October 30 against Couva-rivals W Connection.

W Connection will also make the trip south and will face home side Point Fortin Civic from 8 pm at Mahaica Oval.

And in a simultaneous double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Morvant Caledonia United and Police FC will face each other from 6 pm and Defence Force are against San Juan Jabloteh from 8 pm.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Central unbeaten in nine after eking out 1-0 league win over Sando.
ttproleague.com.

Teenaged forward Nicholas Dillon grabbed his first goal of the season with a second half strike last night (Tuesday) at the Mahaica Oval to earn defending champions Central FC a marginal 1-0 win over Club Sando in Round One Match Day Three Digicel Pro League (DPL) 2015-16.

The 18-year-old Dillon, who recently returned to Trinidad following a three-week trial at U.S. club Portland Timbers, scored in the 65th minute to give Central the match-winning item over the side they defeated five days ago, 4-0 in the semi-final round of the First Citizens Cup (FCC) 2015.

Despite the slim margin, it also meant a nine-game undefeated streak – in all competitions – for coach Ross Russell’s players ahead of Friday’s FCC final clash against Couva-rivals W Connection from 8 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Connection, last season’s DPL runners-up, were also in action at the Mahaica Oval last night but had to settle for a goalless draw against home side Point Fortin Civic in the second match of the venue’s double header.

Connection (3 points) are unbeaten in their last five games, in all competitions, but occupy sixth position on the league table after three draws in as many matches, while Civic (4 points) are fifth.

Central leads the table but only ahead of North East Stars (7 points) on a slim goal-difference, while Police FC and Defence Force, both with 5 points, are third and fourth respectively, following wins last night.

In the lone match contested at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Jomoul Francois scored a late winner to give North East Stars a 2-1 win over visiting St. Ann’s Rangers to take temporary lead.

Rangers, coached this season by former Stars’ coach Angus Eve, had equalised in the 75th minute through Kadeem Hutchinson after Neveal Hackshaw put the home side ahead in the 39th minute.

But Francois’ strike in the 86th minute snatched victory for North East Stars and their new coach this season, Roland Clarke.

In the day’s other games, hosted at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Police FC defeated Morvant Caledonia United 2-1 before Defence Force edged San Juan Jabloteh 1-0.

Police took the lead through Kareem Freitas, the forward netting his third league goal this season in the 16th minute.

However seconds before the stroke of half-time, MCU’s Guyanese international Sheldon Holder rifled the ball into the roof of goalkeeper Adrian Foncette’s net to tie the scores 1-1.

Police, who were denied numerous times by MCU goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, finally had the ball in the back of the Trinidad and Tobago shot-stopper’s net again in the 76th minute for the 2-1 win.

Forward Keon Wilson, who five minutes earlier replaced Jameel Perry, had picked MCU captain and wingback Kareem Joseph on the left before sending a perfect strike into Phillip’s far netting.

The Lawmen were unlucky not to score again five minutes from time when an effort from Christon Thomas rattled the crossbar.

And in keenly contested clash between Defence Force and Jabloteh, a 31st minute goal by Ross Russell Jr. gave Army their first league win this season after two opening draws.

Russell Jr. was at the right place at the right time to direct an Aklie Edwards effort into goalkeeper Raheem Belgrave’s net following a low corner into the area by Kerry Joseph.

Jabloteh had themselves to blame after wasting on two excellent scoring opportunities before the interval.

Nathan Lewis had goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke at his mercy in the 36th minute but the talented midfielder opted to square a pass in search of an oncoming Kennedy Hinkson, who failed to connect.

Lewis later won his side a penalty in the 45th minute after he was brought down by Clarke, however the Defence Force goalie redeemed himself with a superb diving save on his left to deny midfielder Keyon Edwards from the penalty spot.

Defence Force thought they too had won a penalty in the 64th minute when substitute Richard Roy was brought down at the edge of the six yard area in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Belgrave, however referee Crystal Sobers wasn’t convinced.

Instead, Defence Force had to settle for the three points by way of the slim 1-0 win in the end.

D/Force gets confidence booster but Central and Connection play to 1-1 draw ahead of crucial Toyota Clasico

North East Stars are the new leaders of the Digicel Pro League 2015-16 championship following events in south and central Trinidad on Tuesday.

In the first instance, North East Stars, previously tied on seven points with defending champions Central FC but second on goal-difference, defeated home-side Point Fortin Civic 2-1 in the lone fixture at the Mahaica Oval.

T&T international Keron Cummings put North East Stars in front in the 35th minute but that advantage was lost when Civic’s Kenwin Stafford levelled the scores in the 62nd minute.

However the visitors snatched all 3 points when wide attacking midfielder Jomoul Francois grabbed the winner in the 75th minute, an item that kept the Sangre Grande club, coached this season by first—time head coach Roland Clarke, unbeaten this term after four league games.

Then, in the second match of a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Central were held to a late 1-1 draw by Couva-rivals W Connection, who they must also face on Sunday 29 November in Semi-Final Two of the Toyota Classic.

The result in Couva left North East Stars (3-1-0; 10 points) seated at the summit with a two-point lead, while Central (2-2-0; 8 points) dropped into third although tied on points with Defence Force (2-2-0; 8 points), who moved two spots up into second with a higher scoring rate, after a comprehensive 4-1 win over cellar-placed Club Sando (0-1-3; 1 point) in the earlier game.

“The aim was to win and move higher up the table,” said Defence Force defender Curtis Gonzales following the match. “We had the right attitude and got the result.”

Twenty-one-year-old Dominican defensive midfielder Briel Thomas was the hero for W Connection, snatching the equaliser in the 88th minute to salvage a point for W Connection, who remained unbeaten in the league but still winless after four games.

Briel’s glancing header off a left side Alvin Jones , which also beat a last ditched clearance effort on the line by Central’s Leston Paul, proved vital for the Stuart Charles-Fevrier-coached Connection, which only a month ago, edged the Couva Sharks 2-1 in the final of the First Citizens Cup.

Central had dominated the first half but only had a superb Willis Plaza goal to show for it.

Plaza superbly dinked goalkeeper Julani Archibald in the 22nd minute for a 1-0 Central lead after latching onto a perfectly timed Guerra pass inside the area.

It was a return of favour from Guerra who had struck the base of the upright in the 13th minute before Mitchell placed the rebound inches wide, all following brilliant move by Plaza, leaving a handful of Connection players in his path before finding Guerra at the edge of the box.

Plaza, who forced Archibald into a low save in the 15th minute and missed the target by inches in the 24th minute, had the ball in the back of the Connection net again in the 33rd minute from 20 yards out, but referee Rodphin Harris’ whistle was already sounded for a foul against the Couva Sharks.

There were loud shouts for penalty in the 38th minute when Plaza went down in the box after turning between two defenders as Connection escaped again.

Following the break Charles-Fevrier summoned the experience of Gerard Williams at the expense of Triston Hodge at centre-back and later replaced right-back Shannon Gomez with recent T&T national team call-up, teenager, Aikim Andrews and former Central FC forward Dwight Quintero for veteran attacker Andre Toussaint.

While Central FC head coach Ross Russell's main toss was Akeem “Battery” Benjamin into the mix, replacing Marcelle Francoius at the start of the second period, and lanky defender was impressive, adding fresh life to the Sharks back-line.

But from a deflected Quintero effort, Connection won the corner that provided the equalising goal.

Central protested the goal, some calling for a handball and others arguing that the ball didn’t cross the line. But referee Harris stuck to the decision of his first assistant Caleb Wales while Central players Paul and goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams were shown the yellow card during their protests.

After the game, W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean admitted, “Central came out and played a very good first half, they nullified us. They know our game is possession and they came out and did a very good job. You must give credit to them on the day for coming out and playing the way they did.

“After coach (Charles-Fevrier) had a chat with the guys (at half time) and made a few substitutions, our guys went back out and tried to play. I think we were just a bit timid today.

“But we must give credit to our boys, they came back and got us a (positive) result. Sometimes you have a poor game and 1-1 is a good result for us.”

Four minutes were allowed for stoppage-time, but even that failed to separate both sides who must face each other again Sunday on the knockout stage.

“It hurts to give up a goal in the 88th minute,” continued the Central FC coach. “It’s difficult for any coach after your players worked really hard for the victory. Kudos to my (Central FC) players because my team deserved to win today.

“We did a good job tonight. We did our homework on the last game we lost to them (Connection). Tonight the guys really stuck to the task. We could have scored more in the first half but muffed a lot of chances and it came back to haunt us in the end.

“Connection are a good team as well and at some time in the game they will get into it. They did for about 20 minutes trying to get a goal, then we took back control. Always when you are playing against a team like Connection, there will always be a spell where you will have to work in keeping them off your back.”

In the earlier match at the Couva venue, Russell’s son, Ross Russell Jr., celebrated a double in Defence Force’s 4-1 win over Sando as they look towards Sunday’s Toyota Classic Semi-Final One showdown with defending champions San Juan Jabloteh from 4 pm in Port of Spain.

Russell Jr., a former Trinidad and Tobago youth player latched onto a perfectly placed Sean Narcis pass over the top before hitting beyond Sando goalie Alexei Julien in the 53rd minute—the ball hitting the far upright before the ball entered the net.

Julien wasn’t as fortunate when a 29th minute strike from 26 yards out by Jelani Felix crashed off his upright and back into play before the rebound was eventually cleared out of danger.

But Sando’s trouble doubled in the 64th minute when Devorn Jorsling made it 2-0, capitalising on an errant clearance into his path at the middle of the area and striking a right-footer into the back of Julien’s net.

Substitute Kerry Joseph, just four minutes onto the field in the 72nd minute, made it 3-0 from close up when he completed an attack pointed by Jorsling.

Three minutes later Sando pulled a goal back when Teba Mc Knight’s header off a Devon Modeste cross defeated the outstretched glove of goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke for a 3-1 score.

But Russell Jr. restored his side’s three-goal advantage and completed his double for the 4-1 Defence Force win by the 88th minute.

It was a contrasting performance to last weekend’s slim 2-1 win over Super League side FC Santa Rosa in the quarter-final round of the Toyota Classic.

“It’s a great boost for us (ahead of the Toyota semi-finals) because our (previous) performance (against Santa Rosa) wasn’t a good one,” said Defence Force head coach Marvin Gordon after Tuesday’s league win. “To come and play like this tonight and scoring this amount of goals is great for the confidence of the team for the game on (semi-final against) Jabloteh.”

Gordon said his players didn’t show their professionalism against Santa Rosa, taking the Super League side for granted “because they are a lesser team.”

“I had a go at my players about it and tonight you would have seen a difference in performance,” added the Defence Force coach. “It was brilliant from me as coach to do what I did after the Santa Rosa game. I needed the players to understand what I expect from them every time they go out onto the field.”

Round One Match Day Four of the Digicel Pro League continues on Thursday with a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Morvant Caledonia United will tackle St. Ann’s Rangers from 6 pm followed by Police FC against San Juan Jabloteh from 8 pm.

Rangers win and Police rally to hold Jabloteh in 6-goal thriller.
ttproleague.com.

Last season it took St. Ann’s Rangers all of the 24 Digicel Pro League games before registering a win in the final match-day. But this this season, under the guidance of new coach Angus Eve, Rangers are celebrating a win and last term’s 5-point tally by their fourth league outing.

Experienced forward Sayid Freitas scored a first half brace to steer Rangers to a 2-1 victory over Morvant Caledonia United (MCU) in the first game of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last night.

Then in the second game, a late double within a space of three minute from Police FC attacking midfielder Makesi Lewis saw the Lawmen battle back to a 3-3 draw with San Juan Jabloteh.

Jabloteh, who must tackle Defence Force in Sunday’s Toyota Classic semi-final round, had a 2-0 advantage into the break after netting early on within a space of seven minutes.

Even a double on the night from former Trinidad and Tobago Under-23 forward Jamal Gay, Jabloteh allowed maximum points to slip away.

Gay opened the scoring for Jabloteh in the 7th minute when he smashed a heeled Nathan Lewis pass into the roof of goalkeeper Adrian Foncette’s net.

The Keith Jeffrey-coached Jabloteh then doubled the advantage on the 13th minute when Lewis went from provider to scorer with a neat chip over an advancing Foncette from inside the box.

But a 25-yard rocket of a free-kick by Police captain Todd Ryan which cannoned off the far upright on the 45th minute signalled what was to follow in the second period.

Jabloteh were lucky not to concede an own goal in the 63rd minute when an attempted headed clearance by Aquil Selby sent the ball skidding off the top of goalkeeper Shemel Louison’s crossbar.

Police finally pulled a goal back five minutes later through Kareem Freitas, the younger brother of Rangers' double scorer Sayid Freitas.

Freitas (K) sent a low strike into Louison’s far bottom corner to reduce the deficit 1-2 following a free-kick into the area and short feed.

But Gay, showing good composure after latching onto a long ball forward by Caleb Sturge before attacking the area, executed a simple finish past Foncette on the 79th minute to restore Jabloteh’s two-goal lead with a 3-1 score.

Gay, who failed score on a golden opportunity in the 24th minute after Foncette got his glove to a Kaashif Thomas strike, failed to complete a hat-trick in the 83rd minute when he rolled an effort inches wide of the far post.

Jabloteh’s rued chances, including a stoppage-time effort from Jevon Morris which flew inches over, would stand to haunt the San Juan club in the end.

Makesi Lewis on the other end had stolen the show with a brilliant double, netting in the 85th and 87th minutes, to level Police 3-3, a result that kept coach Richard Hood’s side in fourth position with 6 points while Jabloteh on 4 points remained seventh.

Rangers meanwhile jumped three spots up the standings into fifth, an unfamiliar position for the side that finished bottom of the standings in recent years.

Freitas gave Rangers a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when he converted from the spot, beating Caledonia goalkeeper Marvin Phillip after referee Keon Yorke awarded the penalty for a tackle by Shaquille Edwards which sent Sedale Mc Lean to ground inside the right of the area.

The 33-year-old former Police FC forward then completed his double on the 20th minute to give Rangers a 2-0 cushion.

Kevon Piper whipped in a perfect delivery from the right, and Freitas blasted in a left-footer on the second bite after Phillip’s outstretched arm got in the way of the forward’s initial attempt.

Freitas missed to later chances before the break, heading overbar from a right side Richard Williams’ free-kick in the 37th minute and seconds later hitting a right-footer wide.

But in the end, like a second half strike in Rangers’ only win last season achieved against Defence Force 2-1, his two goals on Thursday night proved vital for the St. Ann’s club after Caledonia pulled back a goal five minutes into the second period.

Caledonia, who had two failed attempts from Densill Theobald in the first half, got their item on the 50th minute when Sheldon Holder executed a cool finish past goalkeeper Christopher Biggette after Kennedy Isles’ cross from the right slipped through the defence.

In the end Caledonia remained winless after four league games and occupies ninth place with one point, the same as cellar-positioned Club Sando.

Seecharan shines as D/Force take marginal Pro League lead.
ttproleague.com.

Former Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 player Kishun Seecharan scored on either side of the break on Wednesday night as Defence Force bounced back from last Sunday's disappointing First Citizens Cup final defeat to whip Point Fortin Civic 5-1 in the Digicel Pro League (DPL).

The win pushed Defence Force up a spot to lead the DPL standings with 11 points but only ahead of Central FC (11 points) on goal-difference (+6 to +5), while previous leaders North East Stars (10 points) slipped two spots into third after a 3-0 defeat at W Connection.

Connection, who also defeated North East Stars 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the First Citizens Cup en route to lifting the title with a 4-0 over Defence Force in the final, hosted the Roland Clarke coached-Sangre Grande outfit in the first match of a Round One Match Day Five DPL double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Wednesday night.

Neil Benjamin Jr. opened the scoring in the 25th minute for the Stuart Charles-Fevrier coached-Connection before second half goals from Shahdon Winchester and Andre Toussaint in the 47th and 67th minutes, respectively, sealed the Savonetta Boys first win of the 2015-16 DPL while extending their undefeated streak to 12 games in all competitions.

In the second match at the Couva venue, defending DPL champions Central FC held off a resolute second-half performance by Police to win a 4-3 thriller.

The Couva Sharks scored three times in the first half with a goal each from Ataulla Guerra, Marcus Joseph and Elijah Manners in the 18th, 35th and 43rd minutes, respectively.

However Jason Marcano’s 65th minute goal proved crucial for the Ross Russell coached-Central after Police found the back of the net three times in the second half with a goal from Kareem Freitas in the 64th minute and a double from Makesi Lewis, who scored in the 78th and 90th minutes.

Up north, in the second clash of a double-header hosted at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Seecharan too was celebrating a double—and his came in Defence Force’s 5-1 victory over Civic after San Juan Jabloteh defeated St. Ann’s Rangers 2-0 in the earlier contest with second half goals from Tyrone Charles and Nathan Lewis in the 60th and 67th minutes, respectively.

Seecharan scored in the 18th and 55th minutes for the Marvin Gordon coached-Defence Force while teammates Jerwyn Balthazar, Kerry Joseph and Kellon Serrette grabbed a goal each in the 21st, 58th and 90th minutes, respectively.

Civic, with 4 points from five DPL games, got their lone item in the 76th minute through forward Shackiel Henry. The Point Fortin club will return to action on Saturday against cellar-placed Club Sando from 4 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium followed by a 6 pm kick-off between fourth place W Connection and seventh place St. Ann’s Rangers.

Also on Saturday, North East Stars will face ninth place Morvant Caledonia United from 3:30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

But the action kicks off on Friday with Police FC against Defence Force from 6 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, followed by an 8 pm kick-off between Jabloteh and Central FC.

Police and Jabloteh puts the hurt on 10-man D/Force and Central respectively.
ttproleague.com.

Digicel Pro League leaders Defence Force and second place Central FC both failed to strengthen their positions at the top—which could slip away today—after suffering 1-0 defeats last night.

Makesi Lewis netted his sixth league goal of the season in as many games to earn Police FC the 1-0 win over 10-man Defence Force in the first match of a double-header contested at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The win moved coach Richard Hood’s Lawmen up a spot to now occupy fifth with 9 points—just two points away from Defence Force and Central, both on 11 points but separated by goal-difference (+6 to +5).

Defending league champions, Central, failed to capitalise on Defence Force’s loss by suffering a 1-0 loss themselves in the second game on the night and both teams can slip off the top after previous leaders North East Stars (10 points) tackle Morvant Caledonia United from 3:30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium today (Saturday).

Former Central FC winger Tyrone Charles, who rattled the upright from a 30-yard free-kick seven minutes into the match, scored the winner in the 66th minute to earn Jabloteh full points over the Couva Sharks.

Charles, unleashed by a long ball forward from Fabien Reid, showed good speed, strength and determination when he outmuscled defender Kaydion Gabriel to slip the ball beyond goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams and into the net from just inside the area for his seventh goal in all competitions this season.

Surely, the win was a boost in ego for Jabloteh coach Keith Jeffrey, who, last month, referred to Central the “old Jabloteh” due to the fact that their roster boasts quite a number of former Jabloteh players.

Central, without veteran creative midfielder Marvin Oliver, failed to create much tempo, while Jabloteh seemed well-drilled when it came to swamping their area defensively with green shirts whenever the Couva Sharks attacked.

Central, coached by Ross Russell, conjured a few late attempts—twice from Plaza and once from substitute Darren Mitchell—but other than Plaza’s half-volley strike in the 82nd minute, none troubled Jabloteh goalie Shemel Louison, who also did well to put behind a left-footed strike from Marcus Joseph four minutes from the break.

Jabloteh, now on 10 points as third place North East Stars, moved up a spot on the ladder into fourth, previously held W Connection (7 points), who must welcome seventh place St. Ann’s Rangers (5 points) from 6 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium today (Saturday) following a 4 pm kick-off between Club Sando and Point Fortin Civic at the Couva venue.

Defence Force, coming off Wednesday’s impressive 5-1 win over Civic, were left ruing a basket of missed chances last night while Police were celebrating full points.

Police’s liveliest player on the night, Christon Thomas, had circled Defence Force defender Marvin Jones before playing in striker Makesi Lewis inside the box. Lewis controlled the ball off his right boot before firing beyond goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke and into the back of the net off his left boot with 24 minutes left.

Jones was later ejected by referee Keon Yorke, who initially awarded the defender a yellow card for diving. But followed up with the red card for dissent, reducing Defence Force to 10 men with six minutes of regular time left.

However that wasn’t the real disappointment for Defence Force, who had ample opportunity for maximum points.

The Marvin Gordon coached-Defence Force were denied by the frame three times within the first 8 minutes of play.

Devorn Jorsling missed out on a gift of an opportunity seconds into the match when his right-footed attempt cannoned off the upright running onto a neat Kerry Joseph defence-splitting pass and skipping away from Police goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.

Jorsling, who, in the 64th minute directed a free-kick onto the upright, also had a 7th minute deflected strike skid off the upright.

Then from the resulting corner swung in by Joseph, a cheeky flick off the outside of Jerwyn Balthazar’s boot at the near post, struck the frame.

But it wasn’t only the frame that stood in Defence Force’s way. Foncette made three saves in the second half, denying Dave Long, Jorsling and Joseph to keep a clean sheet before teammate Makesi Lewis’ winner.

Jomal Williams lessons Rangers with a hat-trick as Connection climb third.
ttproleague.com.

Jomal Williams added a hat-trick to his scoring form this season, and W Connection dumped St. Ann's Rangers 5-0 on Saturday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

The win moved Connection three spots up the Digicel Pro League 2015-16 ladder into third with 10 points, but only ahead of San Juan Jabloteh and North East Stars – also with 10 points – on goal-difference, while Rangers occupy eight place with 5 points.

Also making upward movement on Saturday were Point Fortin Civic, who jumped one spot into seventh place with 7 points after a 3-1 come-from-behind win over table-propping Club Sando in the first match of the Couva double-header.

Forward Jamille Boatswain scored on either side of the break before Andrei Pacheco converted from the penalty spot, and Civic, who ended the match with 10 men, were celebrating three points away from home.

Sando took a 1-0 lead on the 23rd minute when Kevon “Showtime” Woodley scored past goalkeeper Miles Goodman from a cross.

Just two minutes later and Boatswain levelled the scores 1-1 when he struck past goalkeeper Kelvin Henry.

Boatswain later completed his double in the 53rd minute after running onto a long pass forward by midfielder Kelvin Modeste, evading Henry and hitting past a last gasp effort from a defender for a 2-1 Civic lead.

Pacheco then made it 3-1 for the Leroy DeLeon coached-Civic on the 60th minute when he sent a low penalty strike beyond the Sando custodian and into the net. Referee Kevin Smart had awarded the kick after forward Shackeil Henry was brought down in the area by defender Corneal Thomas.

Sando too, had an attempt from the penalty spot but goalkeeper Goodman was excellent to deny a not-so-good strike from Woodley on the 69th minute.

Referee Smart had ruled a handball against Ronell Paul after a cross by Kemuel Rivers struck the defender’s arm in the area.

There was another brief shout for penalty in the 77th minute when Ryan Frederick went to ground in a challenge with Civic defender Kern Peters, but Smart awarded a free-kick against Sando.

Sando, quite lethargically, also failed to take advantage with a player more, after Civic’s Glenn Sutton was ejected in the 67th minute—receiving his second yellow card in a space of two minutes while his team led 3-1.

Sando had a couple tries in the final eight minutes but Goodman, who was generally brilliant on the evening including a point-blank save in the 57th minute to deny Woodley, did well to steer attempts by Akeem Humphrey and Devon Modeste wide.

In the second match at the Couva venue, Jomal Williams stole the night with three goals, putting his tally to 9 goals in all competitions this season.

The 21-year-old attacker opened the scoring against Rangers just 62 seconds into the match with a clinical strike into goalkeeper Stefan Berkeley’s net after combining with Shahdon Winchester inside the left of the area.

Jomal made it 2-0 on the 19th minute, sending a strike off the upright and into the net after he was picked out by a Kurt Frederick pass.

Rangers, led this season by coach Angus Eve who has tasked himself to turn the St. Ann’s club into a formidable outfit, conceded a third in the 28th minute when the 23-year-old Winchester headed a Frederick cross over a hapless Berkeley.

The score read 3-0 to Connection at the break, and Rangers were lucky not to conceded more after close misses by Andre Toussaint and Briel Thomas, including a desperate clearance at the line by Rangers defender Shakiyl Phillip after directing a Neil Benjamin cross towards his own net.

But just three minutes inside the second period and Jomal completed his hat-trick for a 4-0 Connection lead with strike from 23 yards that flew into Berkeley’s far netting.

Connection chasing a bigger score-line, saw Benjamin miss the far post by inches after a flicked return pass into the area by Jomal and substitute Dmitrie Apai forcing a save out of Berkeley later on.

But Berkeley, who avoided embarrassment in the 33rd minute by plucking a lobbed Jomal attempt out of the air, was beaten again in the 84th minute—this time from the penalty spot as Connection completed a 5-0 rout, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games.

Winchester, from the penalty spot, completed his double on the night and seventh goal in all competitions this season, after referee Gyasi Mc Donald ruled a handball against Rangers defender Jelani Peters in the area.

Connection, like Jabloteh and North East Stars, are now one point adrift of Defence Force and defending champions Central FC, who have held first and second place, respectively, in the last five days on 11 points.

Stars, with a chance to return to the top on Saturday, failed to do so after surrendering to a 2-1 loss against visiting Morvant Caledonia United at the Larry Gomes Stadium earlier in the day.

Caledonia, for their first league win of the season, got their goals from unlikely sources in Jamaal Harvey and Kyle Bartholomew, netting their first goals of the season in the 2nd and 25th minutes respectively, before the hosts pulled back a goal through Trinidad and Tobago international Keron Cummings five minutes before the break.

Despite the win, Caledonia remained in ninth place with 4 points, one less than Rangers and three more than cellar place Sando.

Subventions likely to be reduced.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

CLUBS IN the TT Pro League are likely to be in immediate financial trouble as there is the possibility that the monthly subventions from the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) will be reduced.

Recently-appointed SPORTT chairman Michael Phillips, in a telephone interview yesterday, revealed, “right now there has been no agreement in place, for that payment to be facilitated. That is the problem.” Asked if, in the case of no agreement, that things has stopped for now, Phillips replied, “it is something that was being addressed.” He admitted, “in the past it (was) the Sports Company that dealt with those payments of the subventions.” But it seems likely that the subventions will now fall under the purview on the Ministry of Sport.

Questioned whether the subventions are likely to be slashed from the $83,000 per month, the former national cyclist stated, “the information with regards to the quantum of support — all of those things are to be made public, all of those things were being sorted out.” Newsday understands that reducing the $830,000 monthly payment for the 10 Pro league clubs is being mulled.

Brent Sancho, managing director of Bankers Insurance Central FC, in an interview last evening, said, “it’s something that will have to take place, discussions will have to take place first of all before we go down that road. To reduce something like that now I think it’s absolutely ludicrous.

I agree in having some sort of discussion as to the way forward, whether it is reducing or whether it is finding other ways of assisting the clubs earning a revenue stream. It’s not just as simple as reducing a subvention, you have to look at the holistic picture, as it relates to football in this country.

The survival of Pro League clubs, the clubs are the ones that drives and has pushed the national programme.

Many of our young players have come from the Pro League clubs. It shows that this industry is a very valuable conveyor belt for our national programme.” How soon may the club get subventions? Sancho replied, “for us personally, it is a challenge, it will be a challenge. I know another month without it will definitely mean big trouble for (some) clubs. I’ll be very surprised if clubs survive the Christmas period.

I’m very aware that, in some clubs, players have left in exodus to look for employment. So it’s already starting to have an effect.

No club in the Pro League is having a go at the Government.

We are very grateful for the assistance of the Government. But the challenge we have as clubs is when you have budgeted monies over the course of a year and it doesn’t come, it leaves you in a perilous state.” Jerry Hospedales owner of Play Whe San Juan Jabloteh, earlier revealed that subventions which had not been paid for the last two months were expected to be forthcoming this month.

“I understand that matter is solved, I think it’s solved, so I understand.

The players understood the rationale of the non-payments of wages. But that matter is now settled, as I understand it.

In other words, the Sports Company is making arrangements to have the payments made, but consistent with their own statutory requirements. It’s not a matter I would have concern about right now,” he answered.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Clubs have to see that hard times are coming and they MUST as a matter of URGENCY, find alternative revenue streams, most likely associated with gate receipts, most likely from community grounds that are urgently to be constructed.

Jamal Gay nets hat-trick as Jabloteh demolish Sando 6-0; D/Force gets revenge on Connection and Civic edge Calè.
ttproleague.com.

Jamal Gay scored a hat-trick as San Juan Jabloteh romped to a 6-0 victory over Club Sando in their Digicel Pro League (DPL) clash on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Jamaican defender Ricardo Harriott put Jabloteh in front on the 16th minute before Gay made it 2-0 in the 27th minute—a cushion which the visitors took to in at the break.

Club Sando, with regular defenders Corneal Thomas and Devon Drayton unused on the bench, were defensively poor and Jabloteh took full advantage.

Jamaican midfielder Fabian Reid scored Jabloteh’s third goal in the 63rd minute before Gay completed his hat-trick within nine minutes, netting in the 65th and 73rd minutes, to increase his scoring tally to 7 goals in all competitions this season.

Substitute Brent Sam, in his first game for the San Juan Kings this season, marked his return to top flight football with a goal in the 78th minute to complete the 6-0 win.

Sam, a San Juan North Secondary standout in the Secondary Schools Football League, executed a cool finish beyond a hapless goalkeeper Kelvin Henry following a giveaway in the area by Sando.

While the result stands as the biggest win for any team in the DPL this season, it isn’t the highest scoring outing in all competitions this term for the San Juan Kings, who demolished Super League side Marabella Family Crisis Centre 7-0 in the preliminary round of this season’s Toyota Classic before whipping Super League’s Guaya United 5-0 in the quarter-final round.

North East Stars remains with the biggest win in all competitions this season courtesy an 8-0 result over Super League side Siparia Spurs in the preliminary round of the Toyota Classic.

Tuesday’s win, however, pushed the Keith Jeffrey coached-Jabloteh up two spots into second with 13 points, one point behind leaders Defence Force (14 points).

Defence Force kept their position at the top of the 2015-16 standings by halting W Connection's 13-game undefeated streak in all competitions with a 2-0 win over the Savonetta Boys in a feisty battle in the second game of the double-header contested in Couva.

Earlier at the Mahaica Oval, home-side Point Fortin Civic edged Morvant Caledonia United 1-0, courtesy a 10th minute item from forward Shackeil Henry – his third goal of the season – as his side picked up a second consecutive league win.

The win puts Civic up a spot into sixth place on 10 points with North East Stars and W Connection also on 10 points, in ascending order.

Connection had defeated 10-men Defence Force 4-0 in the final of the Toyota Classic on Dec. 6, and while Tuesday’s win for the army/coastguard combination isn’t as valuable as Connection’s title win, there was some level of retribution for Defence Force.

“Tonight (Tuesday) was like a virtual final for us again,” said Defence Force head coach Marvin Gordon after the win. “…because losing tonight would have dropped us down the league table and without a chance to win the first round. The plan is to win the league round by round.”

Defence Force took a 1-0 lead through a powerfully struck Ross Russell Jr. strike, which took a deflection to beat W Connection custodian Julani Archibald four minutes before the break.

Forward Devorn Jorsling, who was red carded in the final of the Toyota Classic, redeemed himself on Tuesday with a brilliant performance which included a penalty goal in the 58th minute.

Referee Gyasi Mc Donald awarded Defence Force the penalty, ruling a foul was committed on Jorsling, who went to ground in the area following a collision of players.

The all-time leading Pro League top scorer then converted from the spot for his fourth goal of the season in all competitions after wrong-siding Archibald for a 2-0 lead.

“We understand how W Connection play in their marking and tracking. We also made a change in our system starting with only one defensive midfielder because I thought tactically I needed that, but we needed to work hard defensively because W Connection have a lot of good (young players) going forward.

I thought we played to plan, we solved them out, and as the game progressed, we got into a rhythm and started to possess the ball and created chances. Tonight my players were brilliant especially in their attitude and how we worked on defence, not giving up anything and making W Connection work for everything. In the final (of the Toyota Classic) the red card hurt us but tonight with all 11 players on the park and the right attitude, it gave us a brilliant result."

Archibald had made a low save to keep out a strike by Defence Force team captain Jerwyn Balthazar before winger Kishun Seecharan whipped in the dangerous return cross, which created problems for the home side and the eventual penalty decision.

Archibald later pulled off a one-handed save in the 65th minute to deny a Jorsling free kick from the edge of the area.

Connection, also this season's First Citizens Cup champions, had an excellent opportunity to reduce the deficit with 16 minutes of regular remaining. But forward Shahdon Winchester's sliding attempt to meet a Kurt Frederick cross at the goalmouth was in vain.

Both sides mounted late openings but no attempts were able to trouble the opposing goalkeepers in the DPL Round One Match Day Seven clash.

“The decision to give the penalty really affected us,” said W Connection head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier. “It wasn’t a penalty… the two army (Defence Force) attackers clashed.

“But having said that, I felt that our players allowed the decision to frustrate them and our game went to pieces after that. It’s because a lot of them are still immature.

“We always knew this game would be tougher (than the final we played against Defence Force). But our players must understand that sometimes you will get decisions that are not correct. I have to address it with my players because it’s all about growing and learning as professional players. It’s a group of young players and you could have seen the frustration in the body language after the penalty, and we lost the game because we got disorganised and mentally we were in pieces. Our players virtually gave Defence Force the game after the penalty.”

Round One Match Day Seven continues today (Wednesday) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium when eight place St. Ann’s Rangers (5 points) welcomes seventh place Police FC (9 points) from 6 pm, before North East Stars tackle third place defending champions Central FC (11 points) from 8 pm.

Makesi Lewis tricks as Police maul Rangers; Central falls to own-goal against N/E Stars.
ttproleague.com.

Makesi Lewis scored the third hat-trick of the season on Wednesday night as Police FC rebounded from an early deficit to whip St. Ann’s Rangers 6-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The win improved the Richard Hood coached-Police up three spots into fourth on the Digicel Pro League 2015-16 standings with 12 points, one point ahead of defending champions Central FC (11 points), who slipped two spots into fifth at the end of Wednesday’s double-header at the Port of Spain venue.

Central were edged 1-0 by North East Stars, who moved up two spots to occupy third on 13 points with San Juan Jabloteh – both one point away from leaders Defence Force – through an own-goal credited to Couva Sharks defender Kevon Villaroel in the 43rd minute.

Stars, with a creditable performance on the night, held on for the win, while Central had themselves to blame after wasted chances, resulting in their second consecutive league defeat.

In the earlier match however, Police recorded their second consecutive win in the league in a lopsided affair although Rangers had a 1-0 lead in just the 4th minute of play when defender Jelani Peters headed a Miguel Romeo free-kick past goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.

Forward Kareem Freitas, younger brother of Rangers midfielder Sayid Freitas, levelled Police 1-1 in the 25th minute with his fifth goal of the season in all competitions.

Freitas slid in at the back post to put the ball over the line after a Jibri Mc David right side cross was flicked beyond goalkeeper Christopher Biggette.

It was downhill from there on for Rangers, especially Biggette and his defence.

Police utility player Christon Thomas made it 2-1 in the 27th minute with a cracker from 24 yards out to beat Biggette.

Two minutes later and Biggette was beaten again from distance when Makesi Lewis executed a blast of his own, for his first item on the night and a 3-1 Police cushion.

Lewis got to his second for a 4-1 score four minutes before the break by smashing the ball past Biggette at the far post after Kurdell Brathwaite headed on a Dylon King corner.

Brathwaite had started in midfield in place of captain and veteran Todd Ryan, who picked up an injury during the pre-game warm-up.

It clearly didn’t affect the night for Police although losing substitute and scorer Anton Hutchinson to a successive yellow cards.

Makesi Lewis, from an Elijah Belgrave cross in the 69 minute, completed his hat-trick with his 11th goal in all competitions this season before Hutchinson made it 6-1 in the 73rd minute.

W Connection’s Jomal Williams and San Juan Jabloteh’s Jamal Gay are the only other two players to have scored hat-tricks this season in all competitions, while North East Stars’ Jomoul Francois and Club Sando’s Kevon Woodley are with a beaver-trick each.

Hutchinson, however, who replaced Jasimar Ashers in the 46th minute, will miss Friday’s clash with Club Sando from 6 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in their final match before the Christmas break.

Hutchinson was issued a second yellow card two minutes after scoring for a foul, reducing coach Richard Hood’s Lawmen to 10 men.

Also on Friday at the Couva venue, W Connection will tackle San Juan Jabloteh from 8 pm.

The action continues on Saturday before heading into the break. At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Defence Force will face North East Stars from 4 pm prior to a 6 pm kick-off between St. Ann’s Rangers and Point Fortin Civic. Also on Saturday, Morvant Caledonia United will take on Central FC from 3:30 pm.

Christon Thomas lifts Police into lead.
ttproleague.com.

Connection return to winning ways as Rawle Fletcher Trophy intensifies.

Police FC heads into the Christmas break on a three-game winning streak after defeating cellar-positioned Club Sando 2-0 in the first game of a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on Friday night.

Utility player Christon Thomas grabbed both goals for Police, scoring on either side of the break, putting his individual tally to 3 goals in the last two games while demonstrating his worth in the role of wide attacking midfielder.

Thomas, often used as a wingback or fullback, scored the second goal in Police’s 6-1 league win over St. Ann’s Rangers on Wednesday night while forward Makesi Lewis grabbed a hat-trick.

But on Friday night, Thomas stole the show with well-executed strike in the 24th minute and completed his double in the 89th minute when his deflected strike left goalie Kelvin Henry beaten a second time as Sando recorded a fifth consecutive loss in all competitions and winless at the bottom of the Digicel Pro League (DPL) standings with just one point.

While the win for Police, propelled coach Richard Hood’s Lawmen up three spots into the DPL 2015-16 lead with 15 points—just one point ahead of Defence Force (14 points), who must face North East Stars (13 points) from 4 pm on today (Saturday) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium before heading into the two-week break.

The race to win the Rawle Fletcher Trophy – awarded to the top team after Round One in the DPL – intensified further by the end of last night’s Couva double-header.

W Connection, who had their 13-game undefeated run in all competitions snapped by a 2-0 loss against Defence Force on Tuesday, returned to winning ways by defeating San Juan Jabloteh 2-0 at the Couva venue.

Jomal Williams put the Stuart Charles-Fevrier coached-Connection ahead four minutes before the break, before Shahdon Winchester redeemed himself with a goal on the hour mark after earlier missing a penalty and follow-up strike.

The result thrusted Connection three spots up the ladder into third with 13 points as Jabloteh and North East Stars, in descending order.

Last season's Rawle Fletcher Trophy winners' Central FC are sixth with 11 points, one point ahead of Point Fortin Civic, and will take on ninth-positioned Morvant Caledonia United from 3:30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium today (Saturday).

Jomal failed to put Connection ahead from the 28th minute when, unchallenged in the Jabloteh area, he directed a header just wide of goal after Aikim Andrews supplied the perfect cross.

However Jomal redeemed himself in the 41st minute by scoring his 10th goal in all competitions this season.

Gerard Williams had evaded two Jabloteh shirts before threading a telling pass from midfield and Jomal latched onto the pass inside the box before finishing low past goalkeeper Shemel Louison for a 1-0 lead.

Jabloteh found themselves in trouble in the 55th minute when referee Gordon Maloney awarded Connection a penalty after attacker Dimitrie Apai was brought down in the box by defender Aquil Selby.

However Louison, Grenada national team goalkeeper, pulled off back-to-back saves denying Winchester’s kick from the spot then the rebound effort from the Connection forward.

But on the 60th minute Winchester, who also curled an effort inches wide in the 30th minute, redeemed himself when he hooked an Apai cross beyond Louison and into the net for a 2-0 Connection cushion and his 8th goal in all competitions this season.

Jabloteh mounted continuous attacks with coach Keith Jeffrey even trading midfielders Fabian Reid and Keyon Edwards and fullback Caleb Sturge for forwards Nathan Lewis, Brent Sam and Jordan Devonish, respectively, in the second period, but Connection second choice goalkeeper Terrence Lewis was at the top of his game in preserving a clean sheet.

Lewis, who tipped behind a Reid (F) attempt in the 24th minute, made a superb one-handed save ten minutes from time to deny Jabloteh forward Jamal Gay, who should have done better off Sam’s cross.

Sam was earlier denied by Lewis and also struck wide in separate plays just a minute after entering the pitch in the 57th minute.

Lewis had the last say thwarting Gay on two bites of the cherry in the 87 minute from close up after initially blocking out a Tyrone Charles effort.

Jorsling tricks as D/Force puts one hand on Rawle Fletcher Trophy.
ttproleague.com.

All-time Pro League top-scorer Devorn Jorsling turned back the clock on Saturday afternoon, netting an uninterrupted hat-trick, off his usually avoided right boot, to pace Defence Force to a comprehensive 6-1 win over North East Stars at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The win returned Defence Force (5-2-1; 17 points) to the summit of the 10-team Digicel Pro League (DPL) 2015-16 standings with one hand on the Rawle Fletcher Trophy, which is awarded to the winners of Round One in the DPL.

The winners of the Rawle Fletcher Trophy, however, will not be decided until the league resumes with the final Round One slate of games on January 8-9 after the two-week Christmas break.

Police FC (4-3-1; 15 points), who had a temporary stint atop the standings following Friday night’s 2-0 win over Club Sando, are now two points behind in second.

While Central FC, last season’s DPL champions and winners of the Rawle Fletcher, Akeem Adams and Kevon Carter trophies for each round of the league, are virtually unable to defend the Rawle Fletcher Trophy although defeating Morvant Caledonia United 4-0 at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Saturday.

Defender Jamal Jack opened the scoring in the 4th minute for the Couva Sharks before midfielders Jason Marcano, five minutes later, and Leston Paul, in the 45th minute, added a goal each for a 3-0 lead at the break. Then on the 90 minute, forward Marcus Joseph wrapped up the 4-0 scoring.

The result snapped a two-game losing run for Central (4-2-2; 14 points) now three places up into third and three points away from leaders Defence Force. But are well behind the army/coastguard combination on goal-difference (+14 to +7).

Defence Force, needing just a point in their final game of Round One against Morvant Caledonia United, stands with the best chance of capturing the Rawle Fletcher Trophy, which is named in honour of their late teammate.

Jorsling scored twice in the first half against North East Stars, sending the Marvin Gordon coached-Defence Force into the break with a 2-0 cushion on Saturday.

The 31-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international fired past the fingers of goalkeeper Shane Mattis from the centre of the area for his first goal. It was from a sweeping move down the left by Ross Russell Jr., who exchanged a return pass with Jerwyn Balthazar, before providing the assist to Jorsling in the 30th minute.

Jorsling got to his second on the 39th minute after a right-side Curtis Gonzales’ cross was glanced off the head of Balthazar and into his path.

Jorsling missed out on another three minutes inside the second period, hitting just overbar off his thigh from a perfect Gonzales cross behind the defence.

But the veteran Defence Force forward completed his first hat-trick of the season and seventh goal in all competitions by the 52nd minute, showing excellent composure sharpness inside the box, following a Balthazar feed, to find the far bottom corner of Mattis’ net for a 3-0 score.

North East Stars later reduced the deficit 1-3 in the 64th minute after Keron Cummings converted from the spot, beating Defence Force goalkeeper Sheldon Clark down the centre, after he was fouled just above the six-yard area.

Clarke, who made a point blank diving save to keep out substitute Neveal Hackshaw’s strike in the 47th minute, had pulled off another excellent shutout to deny Hackshaw again after Alanzo Adlam’s rocket cannoned off the crossbar and back into play.

But in the follow-up off Clarke’s save, Cummings was bundled to ground, forcing referee Rashby Mc Phie to point to the spot.

North East Stars managed a few wide attempts in their quest to further reduce the deficit. But Defence Force’s dominance paid off with three more goals.

Gordon’s men made it 4-1 on the 68th minute through Kishun Seecharan.

Seecharan, who was excellent in the wide attacking role and was involved in the plays leading up to two of Jorsling’s goal, capped off his performance with an exceptional goal.

After collecting a Ross Russell Jr. cross with a deft tough on his favoured left boot, the former T&T youth player, with the same boot, calmly lifted the ball beyond an advancing Mattis and into the back of the net.

Defensive midfielder Sean Narcis joined in on the fun in the 75th minute by smashing Gonzales’s deflected cross into Mattis’ net for a 5-1 score.

Mattis was hung out to dry again in the second minute of stoppage-time by his defence after making a save to keep out substitute Kellon Serrette’s attempt, but another substitute Stephan Campbell was alive in the box to smash the ball beyond the goalie to complete the 6-1 rout.

In the second game of the Port of Spain double-header on Saturday, St. Ann’s Rangers edged visiting Point Fortin Civic 1-0 through a 40th minute item from Keron Cornwall.

Rangers (2-2-4; 8 points), under new coach Angus Eve, remains in eight place but have already outdone last season in which they tallied just 5 points from 24 league games.

Civic (3-1-4; 10 points) are seventh and were on a two-game winning run prior to kick-off against Rangers.

Club Sando trounce Caledonia 3-0 for first DPL win.
ttproleague.com.

Jesse Downing, Amrit Gildharry and substitute Kerron Mitchell each scored their first goal of the season on Tuesday night as Club Sando defeated Morvant Caledonia United 3-0 for their first Digicel Pro League win of the season after eight attempts.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak in the league and five overall in all competitions for Sando, since defeating Caledonia 4-2 in the third place play-off of the First Citizens Cup on October 30.

However Sando, the former Super League champions and debutants in the Pro League this season, remained bottom of the 10-team 2015-16 standings due to a much lesser goal-difference although moving level on 4 points with ninth place Caledonia.

Downing unleased a 25-yard laser on the 37th minute to give Sando a much deserved 1-0 lead, following earlier near misses by forwards Kevon Woodley and Devon Modeste and a save by Caledonia reserve goalkeeper Deandre Villaroel to deny Woodley.

The 19-year-old Villaroel, starting in absence of Marvin Phillip who is with the Trinidad and Tobago national team preparing for Friday’s Copa America Centenario play-in with Haiti in Panama, had little chance at the Downing effort.

Downing, occupying a wide attacking role, unleashed the strike with precision and sting to fit the ball into the bottom corner following a desperate clearance by the Caledonia defence.

Having ended the first half on top, Sando remained on the front foot and doubled the advantage by the 53rd minute.

Defender Gildharry blasted into the roof of Villaroel’s net from inside the box for the 2-0 cushion after the Caledonia ‘keeper had charged down a Woodley attempt from a left side corner swung in by Modeste.

Caledonia, on a rare opening past the Sando defence, had a chance to slice the home side’s lead just over the hour mark. But Caledonia captain Kareem Joseph’s crack from the right side cannoned off the far upright and stayed in play before it was carried out to safety by Sando.

Earlier Caledonia coach Jerry Moe threw in creative midfielders Pernell Schultz and Akim Armstrong in support of midfielder Densill Theobald and talented forward Sheldon Holder.

But, other than Joseph’s attempt off the upright and Holder troubling the side netting a minute before the break, the visitors failed make it a miserable night for goalkeeper Kelvin Henry.

Henry’s clean sheet in the end wasn’t possible without the solid defensive work by midfielder Jared London and defenders Corneal Thomas, Kemuel Rivers and captain Kern Cupid before he was stretchered off with 12 minutes left in regular time due to a suspected leg strain.

However Cupid’s replacement, Kerron Mitchell, sealed the 3-0 win in the third and final minute of stoppage-time for the Anthony Streete coached- Club Sando.

Mitchell slid in near the goalmouth to put a right side Akeem Humphrey cross beyond a hapless Villaroel.

Eleven minutes earlier Villaroel was lucky not to concede after Sando substitute Shaquille Holder was brought down at the edge of the box by defender Otev Lawrence. Sando’s Corneal Thomas, from a set-piece, curling the free-kick inches wide of the far top corner.

Earlier this week, Sando’s technical director Muhammad Isa said he wants his players show more appetite and Tuesday’s 3-0 win should surely suffice in their first game since this Christmas break.

The bigger test, though, will come on Saturday against W Connection from 7 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in the final game of Round One.

Meanwhile Caledonia, now on a three-game losing streak since edging North East Stars 2-1 on December 12 in a league contest, will return to action on Friday against DPL leaders Defence Force from 6 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Defence Force, with 17 points, are two points and a healthier goal-difference ahead of second position Police (15 points), with the race to the Rawle Fletcher Round One Trophy to be decided this weekend.

Defending DPL and Rawle Fletcher Trophy winners, Central FC, are third with 14 points.

Congratulations to Club Sando. It was always going to be tough for them, so happy they got that first league victory out the way.

Plenty of characters on this team, with very interesting backgrounds...hopefully they stay hungry from here on.

I am impressed every time I see Jared London play...Tallman, how old is he?

Jesse Downing is capable of doing dem kinda ting; he is Aaron Downing's big brother. Anybody else remember his promise?

Jared London is 20. He plays defensive midfield.

Another player to watch is Tobago-born Jarieb Louis (spelling?) who plays for Mason Hall. Only 14, he currently plays in the TFA League and according to his coach, he is capable of playing in the Super League. He was also part of the Whim Primary School was won and challenged for National Primary School Titles a few years ago.

Defence Force crush Caledonia 8-0 to take home Rawle Fletcher trophy.
ttproleague.com.

Jerwyn Balthazar scored an early hattrick to inspire an invincible Defence Force performance as they crushed Morvant Caledonia United 8-0 on Friday night to secure the Army/Coast Guard combination’s maiden Rawle Fletcher trophy.

The Rawle Fletcher (Round One) trophy, along with the Akeem Adams (Round Two) and Kevon Carter (Round Three) trophies were introduced last season in honour of the late players, while increasing the level of competition throughout the Digicel Pro League championship.

Central FC made a clean sweep last season, winning every round en route to lifting the league championship.

But on Friday night, with full points at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in their third consecutive league win, the Marvin Gordon coached-Defence Force maintained their position at the summit of the current 2015-16 standings with an unassailable 20 points from Round One to secure the Rawle Fletcher trophy this time around.

The result dashed the hopes of second position Police FC (15 points) and third positioned Central FC (14 points), who must tackle Point Fortin Civic and St. Ann’s Rangers, respectively, today (Saturday) in their final Round One fixture.

Earlier this week, Gordon said his side will use every available cannon in the artillery to secure the Round One trophy in honour of their former teammate and soldier Rawle Fletcher.

Fletcher, who played as a defender and had attained the rank of lance corporal, was one of three people, including his best friend businessman Mitra Maharaj and 19-year-old Anil Diram, killed in a drive-by shooting in Couva in December 2013. Fletcher was age 34.

Despite being without scoring ace Devorn Jorsling, due to injury, while forward Richard Roy was used off the bench in the final 30 minutes, Defence Force were blazing all guns against the ninth positioned Caledonia from early on and had an excellent chance to take the lead inside the second minute of play.

But Balthazar headed wide from the edge of the six-yard area after meeting a well-placed Curtis Gonzales cross.

However Balthazar would redeemed himself by bagging his hattrick within a space of 11 minutes and Defence Force were well in control for full points and the title in honour of Fletcher.

Balthazar, wearing the armband, led brilliantly from attacking midfield, but generally, it was a passionate team effort from Gordon’s side.

Balthazar gave Defence Force a deserving 1-0 lead on 10 minutes with a glancing header at the near post to put a Kishun Seecharan corner past rookie Caledonia goalie Deandre Villaroel.

Villaroel, who also stood between the sticks in Tuesday’s 3-0 league loss at Club Sando, had no idea he was in for a nightmare, while Caledonia’s first choice goalie Marvin Phillip was an unused substitute in Trinidad and Tobago’s 1-0 loss against Haiti in the Copa America Centenario play-in in Panama on Friday night.

Villaroel was beaten again after in the 14th minute when a 25-yard Balthazar free-kick to a deflection in the box before entering the back of the net for a 2-0 Defence Force cushion.

Balthazar then completed his hattrick from the penalty spot for a 3-0 advantage on 21 minutes after Ross Russell Jr. was upended in the Caledonia box by defender Antonio Joseph, forcing referee Crystal Sobers to point to the spot.

The lopsided affair continued and Defence Force grabbed three more, through defender Rodell Elcock, midfielder Sean Narcis and winger Seecharan, for a 6-0 score into the break.

Elcock’s header off a Gonzales corner clipped the underside of the crossbar before entering the Caledonia net on 25 minutes.

Then a quick exchange between Balthazar and Seecharan and a feed from the latter resulted in Narcis scoring from close range just over the half hour mark.

Seecharan, who created havoc for Caledonia, added a goal to his two assists on the night, when a ball over the top by Balthazar on the stroke of halftime was met by the teenager who controlled in the area before firing low past Villaroel.

The misery didn’t stop there for Caledonia, who even stood without 2006 World Cup midfielder Densill Theobald, who will depart on Monday for his third spell in the India I-League but first with Sporting Clube de Goa.

Despite some early second half resistance by Caledonia, Defence Force got to their seventh goal 10 minutes after the restart when Ross Russell Jr. rounded Villaroel before strolling the ball into the net.

Forward Kellon Serrette, who was denied by the offside flag in the first half, completed the 8-0 Defence Force win with a minute left in regular time as Caledonia slumped to their sixth straight loss in all competitions.

In the second game of the Port-of-Spain double-header on Friday night, substitute Brent Sam rescued San Juan Jabloteh to a 2-2 draw while denying visiting North East Stars and their debuting coach, Ross Russell a victory.

Jabloteh grabbed the lead inside 2 minutes of play through winger Kennedy Hinkson.

Fullback Caleb Sturge whipped in a telling cross which was knocked into the path of Hinkson by Jamal Gay, and Hinkson, who evaded his challenger, struck past goalkeeper Cleon John from the edge of the six-yard area.

But a spectacular left-footed volley from Gorean ‘Ratty’ Highley, off a deep Rickel Dickson cross, beat goalkeeper Shemel Louison to level the score 1-1 on 24 minutes.

Coach Russell, who was sacked a month ago by defending league champions Central, saw his new side take the lead through a Neil Mitchell deflected strike on 64 minutes.

Finally an instinctive flick off the boot of substitute Sam when he met a diagonal Keyon Edwards feed with 2 minutes left in regular-time, saw Jabloteh level the score 2-2.

Sando upset Connection and Central spank Rangers, while Police keep chase on leaders D/Force.
ttproleague.com.

Club Sando moved off the bottom of the Digicel Pro League (DPL) standings on Saturday with a 1-0 upset win over W Connection.

It was the second consecutive win for the Anthony Streete-coached Sando in less than a week, after registering their first DPL league win of the season on Tuesday with a 3-0 score over Morvant Caledonia United.

But Saturday’s win wasn’t possible without some luck at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Devon Modeste capitalised with headed goal on 36 minutes after Connection goalkeeper Terrence Lewis palmed a cross into the Sando forward’s path.

Connection had carved Sando open on numerous occasions despite the opponents occupying their own half for most of the game. But the Savonetta Boys, without the services of forward Shahdon Winchester and attacking midfielder Jomal Williams due to international duty with the Soca Warriors, failed to find the back of the Sando net.

Twenty-year-old forward Jamal Charles came closest to pulling Connection level, but his strike, five minutes from time, clipped the base of the upright. Charles was one of three second-half substitutes, including 19-year-old recent T&T national team call-up Aikim Andrews and 15-year-old Isaiah Hudson, called upon by coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier.

The 1-0 result saw Sando (7 points) trade places with Morvant Caledonia United (4 points), to now occupy ninth and tenth, respectively. While Connection (13 points) slipped two spots into sixth at the end of Round One.

The 2015-16 standings is led by Defence Force, who humiliated Caledonia 8-0 on Friday night to secure the Rawle Fletcher (Round One) trophy with 20 points to their name.

But on Saturday, Police FC and defending league champions Central FC, now with 18 and 17 points, respectively, kept chase on the leaders with two rounds of the DPL still to go.

Police edged visiting Point Fortin Civic 3-2 earlier with a double from the DPL leading scorer this season, Makesi Lewis, and an equalising item from Elijah Belgrave.

Lewis opened the scoring in the first minute of play and scored the winner on 90 minutes, taking his league tally to 11 goals in nine games this season.

Civic had rebounded in the second half with a goal each from Kerwin Stafford and Akeem Redhead at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the 57th and 64th minutes, respectively. But the second positioned Police stormed back late to register their fourth straight win, with Belgrave’s equaliser on 81 minutes then Lewis’ winner.

Central, occupying third on the ladder, later whipped St. Ann’s Rangers 3-1 in the second game of the Couva double-header.

The Couva Sharks took 1-0 lead on 10 minutes when midfielder Sean De Silva smashed a right-footer past goalkeeper Stefan Berkeley from 22 yards after an errant long-range pass from Rangers defender Shakiyl Phillip.

De Silva missed out on another after 25 minutes of play when his strike, following a neat move involving Jason Marcano and Marvin Oliver, crashed off the upright.

Oliver, enjoying another of his hundreds of classy performances, even at age 40, should have put his name on the scoresheet ten minutes later, but struck high.

However it was Oliver’s feed on the 62 minutes, in another play involving Marcano, that allowed Darren Mitchell to put Central 2-0 up from close range.

Marcano then made it 3-0 on 70 minutes with a powerful strike through the legs of a hapless onrushing Berkeley, who, at the end of the game, tallied four second half saves, denying substitute Marcus Joseph twice and once each Marcano and substitute Nicholas Dillon.

Central FC defender Jamal Jack, on a counterattack, had made a surging run from the back to midway into the opposition’s half and played a pass to Marcano, who slipped beyond two defenders before firing past Berkeley.

But Rangers pulled a goal back on 78 minutes when substitute Trevin Latapy had the simple task of rolling the ball into the Couva Sharks net, with a huge smile, following an error in communication between goalkeeper Akel Clarke and defender Andre Ettienne near the goal line.

Rangers, eight on the standings with 8 points, will next meet Club Sando from 6 pm on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium, followed by an 8 pm kick-off between W Connection and Morvant Caledonia United in Round Two Match Day One.

Also on Tuesday in a late double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, San Juan Jabloteh will host Point Fortin Civic from 7 pm, before leaders Defence Force meet defending champions Central FC from 9 pm.

While Police FC and North East Stars will kick off Tuesday’s slate of games from 3:30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Sando strikes again while DPL front runners drop points.
ttproleague.com.

Club Sando registered a third straight win on Tuesday night to move up a spot into eight on the Digicel Pro League 2015-16 standings courtesy a second half Jeromie Williams goal.

The Tobago-born former Trinidad and Tobago Under-23 midfielder, Williams, netted on 66 minutes to lift Sando to a 1-0 win over St. Ann’s Rangers in the first game of a Round Two Match Day One double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Sando, now with 10 points as seventh positioned Point Fortin Civic, had occupied bottom spot with just one point after eight league outings. But since returning to action following the Christmas break, the Anthony Streete coached-outfit are now riding a three-game winning streak, including wins over Morvant Caledonia United (3-0) and W Connection (1-0).

The only other side making upward movement on Tuesday were Central FC, after the defending DPL champions held current leaders, Defence Force (now 21 points), to a 0-0 draw in the second game of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The contest had the expected intensity, but no final third bite as Defence Force stood without regular forwards Devorn Jorsling and Richard Roy in their line-up. While Central FC lacked the energy of striker Willis Plaza, who recently joined Salvadoran club Alianza.

Defence Force defender Glynn Franklyn came closest to scoring when his header on 25 minutes, off a Kishun Seecharan corner, clipped the crossbar.

While Central, who added some late life with the debut of 20-year-old forward Ricardo John, saw the former T&T Under-20 player putting goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke into a late save and moments earlier Marcus Joseph had a wide attempt but nothing to avoid the stalemate.

With the point earned, Central hurdled Police for second position only by goal-difference as both teams are now tied on 18 points after the Lawmen, earlier in the day, were defeated 2-0 at North East Stars.

Forward Gorean Highley netted on 24 and 42 minutes, tallying three goals in his last two games, to earn new North East Stars head coach Ross Russell his first win after two attempts.

The result kept North East Stars in fifth, but tied on 17 points with fourth positioned San Juan Jabloteh.

Jabloteh, in the first match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, maintained their position on the standings after rebounding from a two-goal first half deficit to beat visiting Civic 3-2.

Forward Shackiel Henry scored a first half brace, netting powerful strikes on 22 and 45 minutes for Civic.

Jabloteh were forced to call on the services of first choice goalie Shemel Louison after just 12 minutes of play but that didn’t help against Henry.

The Grenada national team goalie was summoned after second choice ‘keeper Raheem Belgrave injured his leg while making a clearance in the area.

Jabloteh, however, stormed back in the second period with three goals to snatch full points.

Winger Kennedy Hinkson reduced the deficit 1-2 two minutes after the restart with a stroke of brilliance when he curled a right-footer around a full stretch Louison and into the far netting.

Civic had themselves to blame when poor defending on corners saw Jabloteh level the scores then produce the winner.

Forward Jamal Gay, who missed a golden opportunity from close up in the first half, punished the visitors on 53 minutes with a header off a Tyrone Charles corner.

Another Charles corner on 72 minute and midfielder Keyon Edwards, too, was able to head free to secure the come-from-behind win.

Edwards’ former club Morvant Caledonia United, were unable to manage such a feat earlier in Couva after going under 4-2 against last season’s DPL runners-up W Connection.

Shahdon Winchester scored twice (3rd & 36th minutes) in the first half while teammates Jabari Mitchell (14th minute) and Jomal Williams (62nd minutes) each had a goal to put Connection comfortably ahead 4-0.

Pernell Schultz (63rd minute) and Kareem Joseph (68th minute) reduced the deficit for Caledonia, but on the wrong side of a 4-2 score, the Eastern Stallions are anchored at the bottom of the standings with just 4 points from 10 games.

Central chew on Civic but Balthazar beavertrick keeps Army ahead.
ttproleague.com.

Jason Marcano grabbed a first half hattrick last night to steer defending Digicel Pro League champions Central FC to an impressive 7-0 win over Point Fortin Civic at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

It was the highest scoring league win for the Couva Sharks this season, but second overall to current DPL leaders Defence Force, who demolished Morvant Caledonia United 8-0 on Jan. 8.

Defence Force (24 points) also enjoyed a win last night, crushing St. Ann’s Rangers 4-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to maintain their three-point gap on second placed Central FC (21 points).

Defence Force veteran midfielder and current team captain, Jerwyn Balthazar, scored all goals to add a beavertrick to his, already exciting, season.

The 33-year-old Balthazar netted three times in the first half for the Army/Coast Guard combination before eclipsing his personal best this season –a hattrick in the win against Caledonia this month – by adding his fourth on the night, just over the hour mark.

While in Couva, Central were sparing no mercy against the visiting Civic.

Marcano scored in the 11th, 23rd and 43rd minutes, all off the assists of midfielder Sean De Silva, who ended the night with four assists and a goal.

De Silva intercepted a pass in midfield to set Marcano free and the veteran midfielder raced 25 yards towards goal before slipping his shot beyond Civic goalkeeper Miles Goodman and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Central lead.

Civic’s trouble doubled when Ataulla Guerra made it 2-0 on 17 minutes, finding the gap from inside the area by curling a right-footer into the far bottom corner following a De Silva pass.

The match was well out of Civic’s reach by the half, trailing 4-0, after Marcano added his second and third items in similar fashion by bundling in De Silva corners.

Former Civic star, Marcus Joseph added another Central goal on 64 minutes, beating a hapless Goodman from close up following a Guerra feed to put the score at 5-0.

And if that didn’t add insult to injury, Central’s interim head coach Dale Saunders threw in young forwards in the onslaught, replacing Joseph with Ricardo John; winger Darren Mitchell with Nicholas Dillion and Marcano with Kadeem Corbin.

John, just eleven minutes onto the pitch, snatched his debut goal for Central by netting on 77 minutes.

The 20-year-old John showed good speed and strength to hold off a challenge from defender Kern Peters, after running onto deep pass from defensive midfielder Elton John, before comfortably hitting past Goodman for a 6-0 score.

De Silva, who scored a double in a 3-0 league win over Civic on Sep. 26, wrapped up last night’s 7-0 win with a deserving item to top off a brilliant match performance. The former Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup player let off a powerful strike to beat Goodman at the near post after surprising defender Andrei Pacheco with speed and composure inside the box.

Earlier at the Couva venue, North East Stars edged Club Sando 1-0 for their second consecutive league win and third unbeaten since acquiring new coach Ross Russell earlier this month.

Gorean “Ratty” Highley gave the Sangre Grande outfit the valuable item on 71 minutes when he smashed a rebound into the roof of the net after Sando goalkeeper Kelvin Henry had made a superb save to deny the striker from the penalty spot.

Highley, now with four goals from the last three outings, was pulled down in the area by defender Coneal Thomas, forcing referee Dennis Changiah to point to the spot.

Sando, riding a three-game winning streak before kick-off, had an excellent equalising opportunity seven minutes later. But forward Kevon Woodley headed overbar off a well-placed Akeem Humphrey cross.

North East Stars had two late efforts through Chike Sullivan and Neveal Hackshaw, while Woodley had a solo attempt for Sando, however 1-0 it remained in favour of the visitors.

North East Stars climbed two spots up the ladder into third with 20 points, two points ahead of Police FC, who must tackle W Connection from 3:30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium today (Saturday).

Also at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last night, Morvant Caledonia United snapped a five-game slide by edging cross-town rivals San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 through a late Sheldon Holder goal.

The result, however, didn’t lift Caledonia off the bottom of the standings, but improved their points tally to 7 points, one less than Rangers and three away from Sando and Civic.
