St Benedict’s, Tigers clinch Big-Five spot.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

St Benedict’s College and St Anthony’s College both got narrow 2-1 wins to cement their places in the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football Premier Division League “Big-Five” competition, yesterday.

At Queen’s Royal College Ground, St Clair, St Benedict’s got strikes from Shaquille Dunkley and Taryll Coutou to cancel out Demitri Dunkley’s item for the Royalians.

With the win, St Benedict’s ended with 28 points from its 14 match schedule, to slip ahead of Presentation College of San Fernando, which fell to ten-man St Anthony’s College, 2-1 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

The “Westmooring Tigers”, last year’s League and Big-Four runner-up, went into the match needing nothing less than a win to qualify.

However, it was Presentation College of San Fernando which took an early lead, through Nate Brooks in the fifth minute.

Ten minutes later, St Anthony’s College got back on level terms through Haile Beckles but midway through the second-half the visitors suffered a blow when Brent Noel was shown a second yellow-card by referee Larry Campbell.

But despite, being down a man, St Anthony’s dug deep and on one of their breaks got the go-ahead item from Adriel Kerr in the 72nd minute after which they defended doggedly to grab all three points and the fourth and final “Big-Four” spot.

At the other end of the table, Carapichaima East and Speyside joined Trinity College East as the relegated teams after defeats at the hands of St Augustine, 3-2 and champion Naparima College, 4-1.

St Benedict’s coach wants ‘Big 4’ title to return
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (NEWSDAY).

Coach of the 2015 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) runners-up St Benedict’s, Dexter Cyrus, has called on tournament organisers to reintroduce local trophies such as the ‘Big Four’ in an effort to keep the students motivated to give their utmost throughout the entire season.

While elated with his team’s improved finish from placing 4th in 2014, Cyrus observed that squads’ intensity began to diminish after the overall Premier Division winners (Naparima College) were crowned. According to the south coach, teams in mid-table who were safe from being relegated into the Championship Division, showed lesser interest in matches with the winner already decided and their spot confirmed in next year’s highest competitive school category.

“I think the ‘winner-takes-all’ in schools football is really poor and outdated,” said Cyrus on Thursday. “There should be some form of a ‘Big Four’ or a ‘Big Six’ because what you find happening is that the teams that cannot win or get relegated from the league tend to exhale coming to the end.”

He added: “It is difficult to motivate kids to play to their last ounce of energy if they know that they cannot win. For them, there is nothing like a ‘Big Four’ title or anything else to fall back on or play for. The kids now become very difficult to manage in those games because mentally they lose focus with nothing to play for.” Two years ago, the League was contested by five Zones—North, East, Central, South and Tobago.

However, since 2014, a 14-team Premier Division format was introduced by the SSFL executive.

Now, the League comprises of the top four teams from the North, East and South Zones as well as the top two teams from the Central Zone. There is also a demotion and promotion battle with the bottom two school teams dropping into the lower Championship Division, while the winners and runners-up of the Championship are then promoted to the Premier Division for the following season.

Cyrus and his managerial team of Ravi Ramgoolam and Nolan Bernard have all shifted focus though to next week’s knockout tourney, the Coca Cola Intercol.

As far as for preparations, Cyrus admitted that his team is presently in great physical form with Taryl Coutou captaining the squad.

“Intercol at this level is more mental preparation than anything else. You need to get the boys to understand that they need to play every game like a final and that’s mental. Once I get their heads in the right place, I think we should do well. Their mentality has changed over the past two seasons. St Benedict’s College has a wining mentality and they don’t play as though any team is better than them. They believe they can beat any team and that’s how they approach every game,” he declared.

Additionally, the ‘Southern Lions’ were one of the few teams this year to once again miss out on use of their original home ground (The Commons). They played home games at Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

“Playing at Mahaica Oval was not a problem for us and we were pretty comfortable as the boys adapted quickly. But, we have been given the assurance that it (Commons) would be completed next year and we should be back to our original home turf in 2016.

The boys settled down a bit late (this year), much later than last season. I think that is attributed to the fact that we lost our top two goal scorers in the form of Moriba Descartes and Anthony Herbert; we also lost our first choice goalkeeper, Jamari Warrick, who was the best goalie in the league last year; so we lost three top players.

However, the boys adapted well to the pre-season training and we were able to get in a seven-game unbeaten streak, and that contributed greatly to us coming in second place,” Cyrus concluded.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

So Premier Division now has Naps, Pres, Benedicts, Shiva, Fyzo and Pleasantville from south and QRC, CIC, Fatima, Trinity, Mucurapo and St. Anthony's from town.

Outside of Signal Hill and Gustine who are proven big sides over the years too...I think them other zones need to check themselves quick cause I seeing Malick and Princes Town probably regrouping and will make this thing turn into a two zone league just now.

Tobago Zone SSFL Intercol match-ups postponed due to waterlogged field at Mt. Pleasant Recreational Ground. All matches have been re-scheduled for Monday 9th November. Venue is TBD. Chances are......it might not be Mt. Pleasant unless the weather eases up from tomorrow till Monday.

Roxborough will NOT be fielding a team for Intercol. Speyside will now receive a bye into the semi finals. This could be 3 weeks without a match played for Speyside.

Fyzabad clinch SSFL Big-4 title.
By Roger Seepersad (Express).

Fyzabad Secondary clinched the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls Big-4 League title in dramatic style yesterday, defeating St Augustine 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 deadlock after full time at Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva.

The teams were locked 1-1 after 80 minutes following late strikes by both teams. Laurel Theodore put St Augustine ahead in the 75th minute before Kadeen Louison equalised three minutes from time to keep the South team in contention.

There was no extra time and the teams went straight into a shootout, with Fyzabad holding their nerve to come away with the victory.

St Augustine won the Big Four title in the previous two seasons and were going for a hat-trick of titles in the competition.

It was a well deserved win for the South Zone team after coming close in previous seasons. However, their coach, calypsonian Bryan London was always confident they could win a national title this year saying it was in the making for a long time.

“Last year we were in rebuilding mode. Seeing the players and having them early in the season and knowing the work they put in, I told them that this year we had a good chance at the national double,” London said.

“We started off in April with a lot of gym work and other things so when I saw the kind of work they were doing, I knew we had what it took to win a national title. We went down late in the second half and the players showed great character to come back and take the game to penalties,” he added.

Fyzabad manager Nigel Lakhan was also proud of the team’s performance and said it was a great achievement not only for the school but for the community of Fyzabad and football fans in the South area.

Lakhan also noted that former Trinidad and Tobago footballer Anthony Rougier signed on as technical director at the school in an effort to give back to his former school. Lakhan said the girls are now focussed on completing the double with their InterCol campaign starting tomorrow.

In other matches yesterday, San Juan North Secondary romped past Barataria South 9-0 in the Boys East Zone InterCol quarter-final played in St Augustine. San Juan’s goals were spread out with Rhondel Gibson, Brandon Semper and Joshua Leach scoring two each while Brent Sam, Lukman Brooks and Jermelle Britto scored one each.

The Boys Tobago Zone InterCol quarter-final double-header at Mount Pleasant yesterday had to be postponed due to rain. Scarborough will now face Mason Hall on Monday while Pentecostal Light and Life B tackle Bishop’s.

The Boys InterCol quarter-finals continue today with action in the North, East and South Zones.

Girls zonal InterCol moves to semis stage.
T&T Express Reports.

It was an anti-climactic day in the BGTT/First Citizens Girls Zonal InterCol competition yesterday as only three of the eight quarter-final matches scheduled in the North and South Zones actually kicked off.

In the North, Tranquility Secondary edged Bishop Anstey 1-0 at the St Joseph’s Convent ground in the only match of the day in the zone. Both Providence Girls and St Joseph’s Convent won by default as their opposition St Francois Girls and Success Laventille Secondary respectively did not show for their matches.

The clash between Diego Martin Central Secondary and Holy Name Convent has been rescheduled to Wednesday, after which, the winners of that contest will play St Joseph’s Convent in the semi-final. Providence are set to play Tranquility in the other North Zone semi-final.

It seems that East Mucurapo Secondary have the right formula for knockout football, as the reigning national champions reached the Coca-Cola North Zone InterCol quarter-finals against Queen's Royal College at the St Mary's ground in St Clair yesterday.

Mucurapo, who campaigned in the Championship division this season, and won the competition last year despite being relegated from the Premier Division, had to rely on the penalty shootout to overcome the “Royalians,” winning 5-4 from the spot after the match finished in a 1-1 draw.

They will face St Mary's College in the semi-finals on Friday after CIC had a comfortable 3-1 win over Blanchisseuse Secondary at the QRC ground.

Meanwhile in the southland, Presentation College San Fernando clobbered Vessigny Secondary 8-1, while St Benedict's College edged Pleasantville 1-0 in their respective quarter-finals. The win means “Pres” will take on Benedict's in the South Zone semi-finals at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium on Friday.

Back in the north, QRC could not make the most of their dominance in the first half when they held on to the ball for nearly an eternity.

QRC's Jean-Paul Rochford missed a sitter at the near post when he side-footed his volley wide in the tenth minute.

Mucurapo were dangerous only on the sporadic counter-attack, and scored against the run of play when QRC custodian Jadel Poon-Lewis failed to tip over Glenroy Pierre's left-footer from outside the 18-metre box.

The “Royalians” kept the ball moving has the half wore on, and eventually got their reward in the 39th minute, when their ace Rochford made space for a firm left-footer that went in past Terral Cambridge in the Mucurapo goal.

However, QRC lost their edge in the second half and were unable to take the few chances they made, while Mucurapo came more into their own as the match approached the dreaded penalty shootout.

Cambridge was the hero in the shootout for the reigning InterCol champions, as he dove to his left to make a smart save when QRC's Keyshawn Villafana took his spot kick.

The miss meant Mucurapo substitute Ishaq Abdulla had the chance to send his team into the semis and he made no mistake from the spot, prompting wild celebrations at the end.

The Royalians on the other hand, would have to wait until next year, as their season is over.

Tomorrow's fixtures

The original schedule said Friday, November 13th. Don't know if that's still the case.

And in the east, St Augustine continues to rule the roost...they hammered Toco Secondary for 8 at the Larry Gomes Stadium.
However, Trinity East's miserable season finally came to an end as the relegated Blue Hawks were put out of their misery by Valencia High School. See Video https://www.facebook.com/CNC3Television/videos/10153748872432996/

InterCol down to zonals last 4
By Sean Taylor (Express).

So we’re down to the last four in the Boys Coca-Cola Zonal InterCol competition, with more drama and excitement on the menu in store for the travelling fans across the country.

Today’s action will feature both the East and Tobago zones, with a place a in the respective zonal finals up for grabs.

San Juan North Secondary are coming into today’s semi-final with Five Rivers Secondary after mauling Barataria South Secondary 9-0, and will be hoping to dish out a similar punishment to “Rivers”. However, If East Mucurapo’s exploits last year are anything to go by, Five Rivers should not be written off, especially as they dispatched Arima North Secondary 4-0 in their respective quarter-final.

St Augustine Secondary will be aiming for their stake on the East Zone InterCol trophy when they take on Valencia High in the second match of the double-header at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

“The Green Machine” put an 8-1 thumping on Toco Secondary in Monday’s quarter-final, and finished strongly in the premier division, while Valencia edged Trinity East 2-1 in their respective quarter-final.

SURPRISE PACKAGE: Mucurapo’s Micah Lansiquot, left, motors away from his QRC marker Tshad Selvon during their North Zone InterCol quarter-final clash on Monday. Mucurapo held on for a hard-fought 1-1 draw and triumphed on penalties 5-4 to book their semi-final place against St Mary’s College tomorrow at 5.30pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. --Photo: Kerwin Pierre

‘Pres’ humiliate Tabaquite
T&T Newsday Reports.

PRESENTATION CHAGUANAS humiliated Tabaquite 8-1 yesterday, in the Central Zone Quarter Finals of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca Cola Intercol.

The Presentation team, spurred on by their home supporters, ended Tabaquite’s 2015 season in convincing fashion.

And this result was the most one-sided out of the three matches which took place yesterday.

Couva East spanked Miracle Ministries 4-1 at the Couva East Ground, while ASJA Boys thumped Chaguanas North 3-0 at the New Settlement Ground in Chaguanas.

The attention will turn to the Zonal Semi Finals, which will get going today in the East and Tobago Zones.

In the East Zone, Five Rivers will meet San Juan North while St Augustine will battle Valencia in a double-header at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima from 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm.

And, in the sister isle, Signal Hill will tackle Pentecostal Light and Life while Mason Hall will face Speyside. However, up to press time last night, no venue/ venues were confirmed for those contests.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
