Five Rivers and St Augustine reach East Zone InterCol final.
T&T Express Reports.

Five Rivers Secondary will face St Augustine Secondary in the Coca Cola Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Boys East Zone InterCol final after winning their respective semi-final matches at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, yesterday. Five Rivers booked their spot after upsetting San Juan North Secondary 1-0 in the first match of the double header in Malabar.

Five Rivers, who dispatched Arima North Secondary 4-0 in their quarter-final fixture, proved too much for San Juan who had demolished Barataria South Secondary 9-0 to reach yesterday's semi-final.

In the second match, St Augustine defeated Valencia 3-1 with goals from Kenton James in the fifth minute, Anthony Samuel in the 58th and Isaiah Lee in 86th.

The Boys InterCol continues today with South and North Zone semi-finals.

In the South, Shiva Boys Hindu College go up against Naparima College at Manny Ramjohn Stadium from 1.45 p.m., while Presentation College San Fernando will take on St Benedict's College in the second match of the double-header from 3.45 p.m.

In the North, St Anthony's College open the semi-final round at St Mary's Ground, St Clair against Trinity College Moka from 3.30, while Mucurapo will be up against St Mary's College at Fatima Ground also at 3.30.

FIVE RIVERS booked a place in the final of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca Cola Intercol East Zone yesterday, with a shock 1-0 victory over San Juan North, in the first of back-to-back semi-final matches at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Mucurapo.

The Five Rivers team will tackle St Augustine in the November 18 final, after St Augustine eliminated Valencia 3-1 in yesterday’s other contest.

Today will feature a pair of semi-final matches, in the South and North Zones.

In the South Zone at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium at Marabella, Shiva Boys will oppose Naparima and Presentation San Fernando will square off against St Benedict’s. Those matches will begin at 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm respectively.

And, in the North Zone, there has been a venue change as the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo has been closed, due to the FIFA World Cup Qualifier between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States on Tuesday.

CIC oust defending champions Mucurapo
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The Coca-Cola Zonal InterCol Final has been set for both the North and South Zone, as Naparima College will face Presentation College San Fernando in the south, while the north final will feature the “Battle of the Saints”, St Anthony’s College and St Mary’s College, after yesterday’s semi-finals.

The day’s action was intense in the south, with a barrage of early goals in both matches in the double header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

In a match where Naparima finished with ten men and Shiva nine, Isaiah Hudson netted in the second and seventh minutes for “Naps” while Junior Assoon had equalised in the 5th for Shiva Boys. Jarred Dass gave “Naps” a 3-1 lead in the 17th minute, only for Shaquille John to pull another back in the second half in the 59th after which, the score remained the same for a 3-2 win.

“Pres” edged out St Benedict’s College 2-1 in the second semi of the double-header. Taryll Coutou scored a laser of a free kick into the top corner to open the score for Benedict’s in the 25th minute, however Kareem Riley and Nion Rammy scored two goals in a three minute salvo in the 30th and 33rd to send “Pres” into a lead they held to the end.

Digicel Sportsmax to broadcast Intercol.
T&T Newsday Reports.

IF PRIDE and prestige isn’t reason enough for the country’s teenaged footballers, advancing to the final stages of the Secondary Schools Football League’s Intercol tournament just got an added incentive as the national final will be broadcast live to parts of North America and Europe.

At a joint media conference yesterday, officials of the league and telecommunications provider Digicel announced the start of a five-year partnership that, among other things, will involve live and taped television coverage of the final stages of the annual tournament.

“We will be bringing one live game a week from the (SSFL) Premiership for each season,” said Oliver Mc Intosh, president and CEO of Digicel Sportsmax.

“We will be bringing the finals for each of the zones in the Intercol and then we’ll obviously be bringing the semi-final and the final from the Intercol. Importantly, that starts in ten days.

Then we bring the final from this year to an international audience on Digicel Sportsmax, Digicel Sportsmax 2, CEEN TV which is broadcast in the US and Canada and the UK, all live.” In order to do so, Digicel has brought in a state-of-the-art 13-camera HD OB (High-Definition Outside Broadcast) unit to facilitate the coverage of Digicel Sportsmax. Mc Intosh revealed the partnership with the SSFL was some three years in the making.

“We’ve had the fortune of watching Trinidad perform over the years and we know that there are many more Shaka Hislops, Russell Latapys, Stern Johns, etcetera that the world needs to see,” Mc Intosh added.

The five-year deal, covering broadcast and other rights, will put US$1.5 million into the league’s coffers; but the telecommunications provider will be investing more in terms of “activating” the event.

“The US$1.5 million is the contractual investment, and that obviously covers the broadcast rights and certain other rights like team jerseys and so forth,” explained Sasha Thompson, the Digicel TT CEO.

“We want to bring people out to the games... to create the excitement.

So we want to take this to another level, from all fronts. We alone have spent in our football sponsorships, half a million US just on football activation.” Apart from TV coverage and promotion, Digicel also plans to create training and exposure opportunities for the players.

Mc Intosh said Digicel will be hosting college and university coaches as well as professional scouts once a year during which, games featuring the Intercol finalists and other Caribbean teams will be played.

“We will also have a training period for all the players to come and attend,” Mc Intosh added.

“So they will go through weight training, they will go through skills tests, and it gives an opportunity for the players to be seen by multiple scouts at different levels.” “This is a continuation of the investment that Digicel has made in sport across the region, in grassroots sports, in football, basketball, cricket, in the federations that we sponsor,” Mc Intosh continued.

“We sponsor 12 federations across the Caribbean, so this is really just a continuation of that.

“Digicel is a Caribbean company.

We live here, we have our offices here and we invest in where we live.” SSFL president Anthony Creed expressed his appreciation for Digicel’s investment and their plans to promote and position the players.

“For the past eight years, the SSFL has had three partners; and it is with pleasure that as the season comes to a close we welcome two new partners- Digicel and Digicel Sportsmax,” he said.

“And this partnership could only redound to the best for our young men and women in the SSFL.” The national Intercol final is set for November 30th.

St Augustine, Bishop’s roll to East titles.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

St Augustine Secondary cashed in on their good recent form when they won the Boys Coca-Cola InterCol East Zone Final 2-0 against a plucky Five Rivers Secondary outfit yesterday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar.

Bishop’s Anstey East were even more comfortable in the girls final, whipping Toco Secondary 5-1.

Jalene Sobers netted a hat-trick to lead her team to the title and bring some pride to the school since their male counterparts Trinity College East were demoted to the Championship Division next year.

Carereen Prentice opened the scoring for Bishop’s in the fourth minute, then Sobers doubled the lead seven minutes later. Tyanna Williams made it 3-0 halfway through the first half, while Sobers scored her second in first half stoppage time.

Toco finally got on the scoresheet in the 47th through Tanika Dann’s effort, but it was only a consolation as Sobers completed her treble seconds before the end.

Tigers claim North Inter-Col crown.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Hail St Anthony’s College, the 2015 North Zone Inter-Col champs. They received this title after defeating archrivals St Mary’s College 3–1 in the final yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

The “Tigers” were anxious to avenge a 4–0 defeat by their counterparts in the Premier Division earlier this month, and appeared well on course to achieving this, when Brent Joel met sweetly on the volley an earlier cross from the corner kick. The CIC custodian Kristopher Davidson did not time the flight of the ball properly and it fell nicely for the Joel who gave the Westmooring team the lead after the 51st minute.

The Tigers had hardly completed their celebrations when they went two goals up from an own goal. In the 58th minute, Kathon St Hilliare found room down the right flank and when he centred in search for St Hilliare, it was instead turned in by defender Nathan Harte, although the CIC goalie thought he had it covered.

St Mary’s College struggled all evening as they tried to replicate the performance that earned them the win over their opponents not too long ago. And instead of creating opportunities, they received another goal which almost confirmed that the title was heading to St Anthony’s College.

In the 85th minute Emilio Saunders was given marching orders for his second bookable offence by referee Gyaso Mc Donald. St Mary’s coach Trevor Spicer, the ex El Dorado man, was also sent off for dissent.

But instead of hanging their heads in shame the “Saints” picked themselves up and pulled a goal back as a long clearance from Davidson was poorly taken care off and from the ensuing goal-mouth scrimmage after, Shim was quick to pounce on a loose ball in the box to cut the scores to 1–2 with a minute left in regulation time.

However, any hopes of a comeback was cut short though when St Hilliare found room down the right flank by outsprinting his marker and from on top the area he beat the onrushing Davidson with a fierce low drive that squeezed below the body of the goalkeeper for the winner 3–1 in time added on.

His goal assured his team the North title and a place in the National Inter-Col semifinal on Tuesday against the winner of Saturday’s Central Zone final clash between Presentation College of  Chaguanas and Carapichaima East at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on from 3.30 pm.

Today, down South at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Premier Division champions Naparima College and rivals Presentation College of San Fernando will square off in their Zonal final from 3.30 pm.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Presentation to play for Nate Brooks.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

It's the big one in the southland, when Naparima College take on Presentation College San Fernando in the boys Coca-Cola South Zone InterCol final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium today.

The match has been dubbed "The Clasico of the South" from both camps, which is just as well, because the actual La Liga fixture will kick off tomorrow at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.

Despite the final being an obvious high-profile encounter, the Presentation camp's hearts will be with their forward Nate Brooks, who has been hospitalised since the early hours of Saturday morning after he was accidentally hit by a stray bullet after a gunman opened fire in the heat of an altercation.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Naps edge Pres 3-2 in south final.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Naparima College came from behind in a composed but urgent second half display to win the Boys Coca-Cola South Zone InterCol title as they triumphed over Presentation College San Fernando as 3-2 winners in their clash at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, yesterday.

It was the quintessential tale of two halves, as “Pres” looked on their way to causing a major upset the first period, only for Naparima to turn the match upside down in the second half with three goals clinically converted on the counter attack. Terell Williams netted a second for Presentation in stoppage time, but it was too little too late for “Pres” as the whistle blew seconds after.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Naparima earns South Intercol title with lethal second half against Presentation
By Roneil Walcott (Wired868)

Two-time reigning Premier Division champions Naparima College continued their quest for an impressive national double in the 2015 SSFL season as they pipped old foes Presentation College (San F’do) 3-2 to lift the South Zone Intercol title yesterday at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.
The “Pres Lions” registered the first and last goals of the contest but it was “Naps” who prevailed in the five-goal thriller with three goals in the space of 15 minutes in a relentless period in the second half.
National Under-17 attacker Kareem Riley got the ball rolling for Presentation in the first half with a firm, long range drive but the Pres Lions failed to make full use of a first half which they looked ominous throughout.
Shawn Cooper’s charges would regret not making better use of the first period as the Premier Division champs came out with a vengeance after the resumption, ably aided by the halftime introductions of midfielders Judah St Louis and Justin Sadoo.
What Naparima did in the first half of their semi-final encounter against Shiva Boys Hindu College—score three times inside the first 20 minutes—should have served as ample warning to the Pres Lions, but they did not seem to take heed.
“At the halftime talk I told the boys that we needed to forget about the first half and deal with the second half,” Presentation coach Cooper told Wired868. “Now in dealing with the second half the first fifteen minutes are very important. We needed to get a goal to settle the nerves,” Cooper added.
Pres did not get that goal though.
“If they had scored one (I told them) the momentum would have gone in their favour, and so said so done.”
Naps midfield workhorses Shane Sandy and skipper Michael Basdeo recognized the importance of a good second half start for their team and they immediately made their intentions clear as they both had cracks from outside the box in the 47th minute. Basdeo’s finessed effort, which was parried wide by Pres custodian Ishmael Salaam, led to Naps sought after equalizer.
Sandy’s inviting in-swinging corner was beautifully met by defender Anderson Toussaint who did exactly what the coaching manuals preach--head the ball back where it came from--as his lofted header eluded Salaam and nestled in the back of the net.
“I think after the equalizer the guys didn’t settle down and they were disappointed because we had a lead and it went away so easily,” Cooper said.
Naps’ lively sub Sadoo did not give the Pres Lions a chance to lick their wounds as he combined brilliantly with attacker Jarred Dass on a swift counter-attack in the 55th minute before inadvertently finding Naps sharpshooter Isaiah Hudson who buried with aplomb to give Naps a 2-1 lead.

Grovesnor concerned about Carapichaima today.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Nigel Grovesnor, the St Anthony’s College coach has said he is concerned about today’s Intercol semifinal encounter with Carapichaima at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 3 pm.

After a training session yesterday, Grovesnor said they have beaten their opponents in the league before hence the reason for him being concerned. “The last time we defeated St Mary’s College in the North Zone Intercol final was because we were prepared for it. We had revenge on our minds because the ‘saint’ had beaten us in the league 3-0 so we wanted to get back at them badly,” Grovesnor said.

He said that it will more or less be the same concept for today since they defeated the Central team in the league earlier and expectations are that they will be coming to exact revenge.

“In addition to losing to us earlier in the season, Carapichaima has also been religated so that they will have nothing to lose against us come tomorrow (today). We will not be taking them lightly at all,” he said.

He explained that his team had a good training session on Saturday and yesterday and he has been talking to his players about the importance of this game.

“I have been telling the players that we cannot afford to give anything away or even take Carapichaima lightly because winning the National Intercol is so much sweeter than just taking their exit at the semifinal rounds,” Grovesnor said.

The “Tigers”, as they have been known popularly, have won the National Intercol title on six occasions and have copped the league crown three times. He described this as a good achievement but he promised that he will not sit on his laurels for today and the rest of the matches, until they claim the title for yet another time.

A victory for either team will put them into the final where they will await the winner between South Zone champion Naparima College and St Augustine, who yesterday edged Speyside 2-1 in Tobago.

Meanwhile Carapichaima coach Kevin Jeffreys said yesterday that his players are upbeat and looking forward for the clash today.

“Although we have been relegated, the results are not a proper reflection of how the team performed throughout the season. Our main problem has been scoring goals and we have been lacking badly there. When we last played the Tigers we were leading 1-0 but lost the match because of two defensive blunders,” Jeffreys said.

The central team will, for the first time, be back to full strength and Jeffreys said his team are looking forward to today’s match.

The 2015 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) season is rapidly nearing its finale, as St Anthony's College take on Carapichaima East Secondary 4.15pm today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in the first semi-final of the Coca-Cola National InterCol competition.

Carapichaima qualified for the semi-final after they prevailed 3-0 winners over Presentation College Chaguanas in the Central Zone Final on Saturday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

St Anthony's are most people's favourites to go through to the final, however they are not taking the “Caps” challenge lightly. “We are confident for the semi-final, but we take no team for granted,” said Simon Joseph, the captain of the North Zone InterCol champions.

The Westmoorings “Tigers” edged Carapichaima 2-1 the first time the two sides met this season, and have also beaten them 1-0 in the 2011 Big Five at the Ato Boldon Stadium, however today's match is one that Nigel Grosvenor is taking seriously.

He told the Express shortly after Thursday's final against St Mary's College that he intended to work with his charges on Monday, and that the he is not allowing complacency to creep in at this crucial stage.

The “Tigers” have steadily improved after a shaky start to the season, and will be expected to have a similar attacking approach today as they did in Thursday's North Zone final in which they beat CIC 3-1 at the same venue where they will be contesting today's semi.

Beckles brace secures national final berth for Tigers.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

St Anthony’s College are coming into their own as they cruised to a 2-0 win against Carapichaima East Secondary in yesterday’s Coca-Cola National InterCol semi-final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

A first half double from super-sub Haile Beckles was more than enough for the Westmoorings “Tigers” to move into their third national final in the last five years.

Whether they can win their third title (after winning in 2011 and 2012) remains to be seen. However, the Central Zone InterCol victors did not provide them with the same threat as St Mary’s did in the North Zone final last Thursday.

Meanwhile, it’s down to the last four. The “Green Machine” will travel to the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, and attempt to take away the dream of a treble from Naparima College as the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Divsion winners and South Zone Coca-Cola InterCol champions host St Augustine Secondary in the second semi-final today.

The last time the two teams met was a comprehensive 3-1 win for Naparima at Lewis Street, San Fernando last month. It may have been a routine encounter for Naparima at the time, but it was a result that helped to mould a title-winning season for St Augustine.

Since that match, the boys from Warren Street, have won eight consecutive matches, a run which has not only seen them hoist the East Zone InterCol title, but also has also seen them come full circle; facing the team who galvanised them into action.

St Anthony’s cruise into Intercol final
By JOEL BAILEY (NEWSDAY).

ST ANTHONY’S virtually cruised into the final of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca Cola National Intercol competition yesterday, by virtue of a 2-0 victory over Carapichaima in the first semi-final contest.

This game was staged at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Substitute Haile Beckles scored twice, in the first half, to see the “Westmoorings Tigers” book a spot in the November 30 final, at a venue to be determined.

Today will feature the other semi-final, between Naparima and St Augustine, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella from 3.30 pm.

The St Anthony’s team, from the opening minutes, were virtually encamped in the Carapichaima half, but, on a number of occasions, their final pass was totally lacking.

They had a close chance to break the deadlock in the 12th minute, as winger Kathon St Hillaire sent a cross from the right which was partially cleared by the defence. The ball fell to the path of Jodel Brown whose shot deflected off a defender and went wide of Dejourn Charles’ goal.

However, there was a major development in the 25th as striker Beckles came on for left-back Jediael Harewood, who was injured after going in to a tackle with Carapichaima right-back Michael Williams. As a result, winger Shakeem Patrick filled in the breach left by Harewood.

After a number of half-chances, Beckles got his name on the scoresheet in the 34th.

He got a ball on the run and, after evading left-back Jerome Forte, he expertly placed his right-footer past the left of a stunned Charles, from close range.

Carapichaima had an opportunity to level the scores, four minutes later. Forte made a surge down the middle and picked out striker Justin Joseph. The St Anthony’s back-line was slow to react to the move but Joseph’s shot nicked off the body of a defender and trickled past the right of Jabari Brice’s goal.

That error proved costly as, in the 44th, Beckles netted his second item. St Hillaire skipped past a tackle and sent a square pass across the Carapichaima defence.

Beckles was on hand on the left to swivel and hit his right-footed shot off the legs of Charles and over the goal-line.

Carapichaima were devoid of ideas in the second half, and their only opportunity of note, in the second half, took place in the 60th.

Midfielder Colin Wheeler was given space in the penalty spot, on the left, but his angled left-footed shot went wide.

After that, the Kevin Jeffrey- coached Carapichaima offered nothing to worry the Nigel Grovesnor-coached St Anthony’s outfit who, in turn, saw two goal-scoring chances squandered.

Ten minutes later, St Hillaire took a pass from substitute Kheisa Granger from the right and chipped the advancing Charles, but the ball went wide, to the keeper.

And, in the 81st, substitute midfielder Shem Clauzel saw his effort miss the target, after collecting a ball at the edge of the penalty box.

Naps edge Green Machine for Inter Col final spot.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Naparima College advanced to the final of the Coca Cola National Inter Col yesterday when they defeated the “Green Machine” of St Augustine 2-1 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Gerard Dass scored in the 46th minute and Shubal Celestine added another item two minutes into time added on to confirm a meeting with arch rivals St Anthony’s College on Monday at a venue to be announced.

After the match “Naps” coach Angus Eve said his team played a good game but they didn’t score as many goals as they should have scored in the encounter.

“They created a number of chances but did not convert them. But we are into the final and that is most important. We will be facing the only team that defeated us during the Premier Division season this year” Eve said.

St Augustine, as they did in the league encounter against Naps earlier this month, took the lead in the seventh minute from a penalty spot. Midfielder Jesse Joseph was brought down in the area while on his way to goal causing the referee to point to the penalty spot. And captain Joshua Marshall stepped up and beat the Naps goalkeeper from the spot kick.

Naparima, who have won the league and South Zone Inter Col titles to date, got the equalising goal in the 46th minute when Gregory found room down the right flank and squared it back for Dass to meet nicely with a sliding kick past the St Augustine goalkeeper for the lead.

And they got their second goal and the winner from a neat build in and around the Green Machine box. The ball was then centred for an unmarked Celestine to fire home.

Only recently Eve said he was heading for a treble of titles after claiming the league, south zone intercol and now heading for the national intercol. Eve, a former national midfielder called on the West Mooring team to come out and play attacking football that the crowd will be coming out to see. The St Anthony’s ‘Tigers’ are the only team to have beaten the southern giants for the season.

But yesterday Eve said the Tigers played a defensive style of football that he hopes they will not do for the coming final on Monday.

‘Green Machine’ halted
Naparima to face St Anthony’s in InterCol final
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Naparima College needed two gifts from their St Augustine Secondary opponents to seal their place in this year’s Boys Coca-Cola National InterCol final on Monday against St Anthony’s College, as the South Zone champions edged out the “Green Machine” 2-1 in a mostly one-sided semi-final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium yesterday.

After having to travel to Tobago to get a tricky 2-1 win at Speyside High, the “Green Machine” looked as if they needed oiling near the end, as they tried to hold on for a penalty shoot-out.

The East champions were almost successful too, however lapses in concentration in their back-line ultimately cost them the match and a place in the final.

“Naps” bossed the opening ten minutes, as they strung together an endless number of passes and looked the livelier of the two teams.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

To forumites at home, is Dass good enough to a bligh from Hart. He has featured prominently on the scoring charts in this year's boys hs football. Long ago the top scorer in the college's league usually get a cobo sweat with the MNT. Like a call up to practice with the team. Or, is his site focused on a scholarship to the US?

No disrespeck bro....but you really feel a player playing in a substandard league in our already substandard domestic setup going to be anywhere near ready for a call up to the senior mens national team?

Yes in the past players like Ian "Moose"" Clauzel and Clint Marcelle were called up to the National team when still technically at school....but those were purely exercises in Public Relations and not because they earned it.

What Yorke and Latas and to a lesser extent Leonson were able to do was an anomaly.  The exception far from the rule.  Given the kind of scouting in today's football, if any local player on the radar it would be Levi Garcia.  If he cannot get a cobo sweat with the senior mens national team (and rightfully so IMO), who else could get it?

We trying to RAISE standards.  That is why I shocked at the question/suggestion.
