I am a bit surprised at the state of the ground although it looks green. When St. Bede's technical school was there, the field was well manicured. Grass always cut. There was a maintenance crew. There was a swimming pool on the other side of the road, next to the school.
The 74 youth team stayed there for a 2 week prep. before going to Canada. The whole experience was an eye opener for me. get up in the morning, go down the hill from the rooms in the Abbey to that very field. do warm up exercises. The group jogged down St.John Rd. At the bottom, more stretching. Then full race back up to the field. More stretching. Sprint and stamina work. After that run up the steep hill to the Abbey. Shower and head to the dining room for breakfast. And that is just the beginning of the day. You still had 10 - 12 and 3 to 6pm sessions. And after, look at film and talk tactics and teamwork before bed. You do that for two weeks and you start to believe you could play pro.
Tunapuna RC school sports was a hell of an occasion, when it was kept there also. That is my beautiful experience of St. John rd and Mt. St. Benedict.
Time has changed. The jumbies(not the jumbie onthis forum) have invaded the lives of black people in TT, or at least the black communities have allowed the jumbies to take over their lives. These communities struggling to do the right thing for their children. Must commend the Abbey for allowing the community to use the field to do something useful. Must commend the Brothers and Sisters for organizing the football sessions for the young ones. Blessings!!
