Last season’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 champions T&T Red Steel will be known as the T&T Knight Riders for this year’s edition of the tournament, which bowls off in June.

CPL insiders revealed that the owners of the T&T Red Steel franchise, who also own the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier league (IPL), have requested a name change for the T&T franchise.

Last year, the T&T Red Steel was bought by Red Chillies Entertainment which is owned by Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, as well as Jay Mehta.

The team won the title in front of home supporters at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, and fans were looking ahead to another successful season for the Red Steel.

The nucleus of the new T&T Knight Riders is expected to remain and Dwayne Bravo will be at the helm. However, the team’s marquee foreign player would be the New Zealand Brendan McCullum, who plays for the KKR in the IPL. McCullum was one of the standout players in last year’s World Cup where he led New Zealand to the final.

The draft for the tournament is scheduled for February 11 at the Hilton Barbados and the six teams will finalise their roster for the tournament. It is understood that some of the Bollywood stars involved in the set-up would be present at the draft.

This CPL will be making significant strides this year, as matches are carded for outside of the Caribbean. There is a block of matches at the end of July which is scheduled to take place at the Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, which is the only International Cricket Council (ICC) recognised venue in the United States.

What a stupid change in name smh. T&T Red Steel had a ummph! Red Steel you quickly know to come out in Red. It had a sort of national emotional tie to the name. Knight Rider is wha? An American movie?  :D

I honestly don't like the name. Knight riders were the original KKK. Gooogle it. We can't tell people in India what to name their teams. But I feel a certain disappointment in the naming of our team with that moniker. Red Steel is perfect.

People could vex how much they want, but in reality, the owners really have no allegiance to Trinidad nationally, culturally or otherwise.  In the end it seems like a smart business move and a cheap way to source new talent for KKR and promote THEIR BRAND. I guess the WI in its brilliance really ended up farming out their own talent and infrastructure for pennies on the dollar...
We fire de old set ah managers we had wukkin..and iz ah new group we went and we bring in. And if the goods we require de new managers not supplying, when election time come back round iz new ones we bringin. For iz one ting about my people I can guarantee..They will never ever vote party b4 country

You can look at it that way and you would be correct .But you can also look at it as Cricket has no sponsors in the WI and its being run buy dead broke islands .The red force team in the champios league showed TnT to be a little gold mine. But the Wicb promptly dismantled  the TnT 20/20 hoping to cash in on our success , our players could no longer be seen .
KKR loves Narine , and this could be awesome they have money the to do this right .Am thinking first class everything for the team , am seen discovering new talent and no longer having to prove your worth as a player to a bunch of jealous and spiteful territories to hopefully get a pick.
Am seeing great parties and movies and music a cultural sharing comparing only to when kanchan and babla came in the eighties .
This could be wonderful.

Red Steel renamed Trinbago Knight Riders
T&T Newsday Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel have been renamed Trinbago Knight Riders in a move that reflects the vision of the new Indian owners to make the brand a truly global one.

The franchise was purchased last season by businessman and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who is also a co-owner of established Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders.

“The acquisition of the Trinbago franchise is consistent with our vision to expand the ‘Knight Riders’brand globally,” said Venky Mysore, chief executive of KKR.

“We are proud of the powerful KKR brand we have built in India as part of the IPL as well as the ever- growing fan base. We now look forward to expanding our brand in Trinbago as well as the entire Caribbean as part of the CPL.” The TT franchise are the reigning CPL champions after defeating 2014 champions Barbados Tridents in the final of the tournament.

They have been one of the more successful teams, reaching the semi-finals of the inaugural tournament in 2013 and the following year.

This year, they managed to acquire off-spinner Sunil Narine from Guyana Amazon Warriors, to reunite him with the KKR brand.

Narine plays for KKR in the IPL.

Despite the name change, Shah Rukh Khan said he did not expect Trinbago Knight Riders to lose the local flavour.

“It is a great honour to become part of the rich cricketing tradition of Trinidad and Tobago,” he said.

“We will do everything to uphold the tradition and thank all the people of Trinbago in advance for their passion and support.” The CPL draft is set to take place in Barbados today ahead of the start of the 2016 campaign in June.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

From a marketing standpoint that was dotishness...Red Steel was a name that the local fans could relate to.

If they were so keen on the Indian influence, maybe Red Riders.

I can go with that. I just don't like the knight riders.
