Looks like this will be another SMALL carifta team. I think only 1 400m runner from TT made the standard.. That goes for male and female and all age groups. Also no 400mh athletes qualified.

Disappointing to see that Jacob st Clair did not get the 400m standard. He was the only one to give the Jamaican a run in that event last year.

Performances might have been affected by the wind. But still, there is no excuse for having little representation in the 400m and 400mh.

Since 2010 Carifta was the best performance TT ever had. Ever since that, there has been a steady decline. I dont see this team being bigger than 40 athletes.

Just for your information our Carifta team last year consisted of 68 athletes.
I won't be surprised if they send a similar size team again this year unless they need to save money due to cut backs and the recession.

PORT OF SPAIN

Tyriq Horsford and Khalifa St Fort were in dominant mood on the second and final day of the Carifta trials, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Horsford improved on his Trinidad and Tobago boys’ under-18 javelin record, the 16-year-old thrower landing the spear 71.52 metres— well past the 59.00m Carifta standard. The massive third round effort was 79 centimetres better than the 70.73m throw that had earned Horsford Carifta gold, the Games record and the national record, in St Kitts and Nevis last year.

St Fort won the girls’ under-20 200 metres final in 23.64 seconds to complete the sprint double. A powerful display on the straight dispelled any thoughts of a challenge to the 2015 World Youth Championship 100m silver medallist.

St Fort’s clocking was well inside the 24-flat Carifta qualifying standard and almost a second faster than second-placed Renee Stoddard’s 24.59. After the race, the IAAF World Championship 4x100m bronze medallist flashed her broad smile and waved to the crowd.

The boys’ under-20 200m final was also a one-athlete race. Akanni Hislop quickly made up the stagger on Kashief King, coming off the turn with only the clock to challenge him.

With an illegal 3.0 metres per second wind at his back, Hislop motored to the line in 21.09 seconds—more than three-tenths of a second faster than the 21.40 Carifta standard. King had to settle for the runner-up spot in 21.53.

Che Richards produced a solid series to emerge victorious in the boys’ under-20 long jump. The best of his four legal jumps, 7.30m, came in round four, the tall athlete landing well beyond the 7.20m Carifta qualifying distance. Richards also jumped 6.74m, 7.02m and 7.24m.

Reigning Carifta Games champion Andwuelle Wright was well short of his best, finishing second to Richards with a 5.96m jump.

Twenty-two athletes produced qualifying standards yesterday. Nineteen of them were new, bringing the two-day total to 40 athletes. Three of them--St Fort, Chelsea James and Anya Akili--qualified on day one, and then achieved the Carifta standard in a different event on day two.

St Fort qualified in the girls’ under-20 100m and 200m, James in the girls’ under-20 discus and shot put, and Akili in the girls’ under-18 100m hurdles and girls’ open heptathlon.

James was on show in yesterday’s shot put event, throwing the iron ball 14.09m. Akili, meanwhile, completed the heptathlon, finishing with 4,272 points to top the seven-discipline event.

The 2016 Carifta Games will be staged in Grenada between March 26 and 28.

St. Fort clocks 11.39/23.54, Horsford's 71.52 light up T&T Carifta Trials
March 7th, 2016 8:32am (TrackAlerts.com)

Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) 1st with 71.52 & Khalifa St Fort 11.39/23.54 at T&T Carifta Trials 2016

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - World Youth 100m silver/World 4x100m bronze medallist, Khalifa St. Fort was one of the outstanding performers at the NGC/T&T NAAA Carifta Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurpapo on March 5 & 6.

Competing unattached, St. Fort cruised to victories in the girls under 20 100m (11.39w) and 200m (23.64), crushing the field in both sprints. In the 100m on the first day (March 5), the 18 year old pulled away from her opponents to win by over five metres and dipped below the qualifying standard of 11.80 for the event on the first day of competition (11.79/-1.7 in the heats).

The 2015 Pan American Juniors sprint queen then returned on Sunday (March 6) to secure the 200m on a wet track following early afternoon rains. Her 23.64 was under the Carifta standard of 24.00. St. Fort is expected  to be in T&T’s contingent for this year’s Carifta Games, set for St. Georges, Grenada from March 26 to 28.

Reigning Carifta champion and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) stole the spotlight on the second day with his national youth record throw of 71.52m in capturing the boys under 18 javelin crown on Sunday (March 6) morning. Horsford improved on his previous national mark of 70.73 set in winning last year’s Carifta title in St. Kitts/Nevis. So dominant was Horsford that all six of his throws (68.66, 56.12, 71.52, 68.92, 60.89 and 66.42)  could have won him the title and were superior to the Carifta standard of 59.00.

Horsford’s Zenith club mates also impressed in the javelin events taking three of the four titles, producing all four of the Carifta qualifiers in the discpline. Vandel Joseph took home the boys under 20 honours with a distance of 59.31 and had four other marks over the 57.00m standard. The 2015 Carifta boys under 18 bronze medallist beat his training partner, Odel Joefield who also got over the standard with 58.31.

Asha James clinched the girls under 18 javelin spot on the team on the opening morning of action (March 5) with a mark of 43.59 to surpass the 40.00 standard. She will be hoping to improve on her silver medal achieved in the discipline in 2015. James led a Zenith sweep of the event as Talena Murray (38.81) and Kymoi Noray (35.15) took second and third.

Tobago athletes excelled in the throws taking nine of the twelve throwing titles on offer. Konnel Jacob (Tobago Jaguars) and Clarence Hannibal (Tobago Falcons) finished 1-2 in boys under 18 shot put and discus. Jacob won the shot with a distance of 15.23 (standard-15.20) ahead of Hannibal (15.13) but Hannibal reversed the positions in discus taking the top spot with 47.29 (standard-44.30) to Jacob’s 40.20. Triple Carifta champion Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons) landed the girls under 20 shot put with a mark of 14.09 (standard-13.50). James was also second in the discus with 40.93 behind Shaiann Charles (D’Abadie Progressive) 41.70 as both were over the 40.00 qualifying mark.

Another Tobagonian, Nkosi James, competing for the University of the West Indies, secured the boys under 20 discus with a hurl of 41.71 (standard-47.00) and was also second in the shot put (13.62) behind last year’s Carifta boys under 18 winner and record holder Isaiah Taylor (Abilene Wildcats), 15.26.

On the track, another of Zenith’s defending Carifta champions, Akanni Hislop won the boys under-20 200m in a wind aided 21.09 (3.0m/s) after running a strong bend.

Cougars secured the top two spots in the boys and girls under 18 800m. Jaden St. Louis took the junior boys two-lap final in 1:59.54 ahead of teammate, Recardo Prescott, 1:59.76. The two will make the trip to Carifta, as Prescott ran 1:57.85 in the heats earlier in the day to ensure that the pair dipped under the 1:59.60 standard. In the girls under 18 Kershell McIntyre took gold in 2:15.77 to cross the line inside the 2:16.00 standard. The 1500m winner was pushed all the way by teammate, Joanna Rogers, who narrowly missed qualifying with her time of 2:16.51.

The girls open heptathlon proved the be the most competitive event at the two day trials, as the lead kept changing at the completion of almost each individual event.

Ayana Glasgow (Toco TAFAC) headed the standings, going into the seventh and final event, the 800m, but with her cellar place in the two lapper, could not hold on to the advantage, and eventually finished in third position. Anya Akili (Kaizen Panthers) took the 800m and overall title with 4272 points ahead of early event leader Antonia Sealey (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 4207 and Glasgow (4272). All six finishing competitors were above the 3500 points standard. Only two will be selected to compete in Grenada.

Anya Akili also qualified for the girls under 18 100m hurdles clocking 14.50 to edge out Cheziah Phillip (Toco Titans) 14.52, as the two bettered than the 14.70 standard.

In the boys open Octathlon, Ian West maintained his overnight lead and went on to claim the top honours with 5280 ahead of Kerlon Ashby (Kaizen Panthers) 4841 and Michael McKenzie (Alpha) 4748 and Aaron Caesar (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 4591, as the top four scored over the 4500 points standard.

The boys under 18 and 20 100m produced contrasting finishes as Adell Colthrust (Abilene Wildcats) showed a welcome return to form to secure the first-named sprint crown. A sprint phenom in his juvenile days, he won in 10.64 by more than 1/10 of a second. He also led four boys under the 10.85 qualifying time. Tyrel Edwards (Toco Titans) was second in 10.75 to record his third sub 10.85 clocking of the day, after posting the fastest times in the heats (10.82) and semifinals (10.80). Avindale Smith, also of Abilene Wildcats, copped third (10.81 ahead of Ako Hislop (Kaizen Panthers) 10.82. In contrast, in the senior boys 100m 0.04 seconds separated the top four in a blanket finish.  Jalen Purcell (Simplex) got the nod for the victory in 10.67, with Chad Richards (ZC Athletics), 10.68, Xavier Mulgata (Memphis Pioneers) 10.69 and McNish Compton of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 10.71 all followed closely behind. The quartet narrowly missed getting under the 10.65 standard.

Jenea Spinks and Concorde training partner Akidal Lewis took the top two spots in the girls under 18 100m (standard-12.00). In the finals, Spinks was first to the line in 11.98 ahead of Lewis (12.05). Lewis had earlier run 11.83 in the semis.

St Fort gets sprint double
…Horsford breaks javelin record

Monday, March 7 2016 (T&T Newsday)

Khaifa St Foth (sprinter) & Tyriq Horsford (javelin) star on Day 2 of T&T CARIFTA Trials

WORLD YOUTH silver medallist Khalifa St Fort completed an impressive sprint double on the second day of the NGC/NAAA Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday.

St Fort ran away with the girls Under-20 200 metres in 23.64 seconds to add to her victory in the 100m on Saturday. Watched by her coach, TT ’s quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon, the 18-yearold defied the wet track to finish well ahead of the field and dipped inside the 24.00 Carifta standard.

Taking second spot was 400m champion Renee Stoddard (Speed Factory) 24.59 and Jada Barker (Cougars) 24.83.

On Saturday, she won the 100m in 11.39 to book her ticket to this year’s Carifta Games in Grenada from March 26-28.

Reigning Carifta gold medallist Akanni Hislop (Zenith) copped the boys Under-20 half lap in a wind assisted time of 21.09 to leave Kashief King (Pt Fortin New Jets) 21.52 and Jerod Elcock (Abilene Wildcats) 21.92 behind. Hislop blazed past the 21.40 standard.

Another Carifta champion Tyriq Horsford, also of Zenith, stole the headlines on day two setting a national youth record in winning the boys Under-18 javelin with a throw of 71.5 metres. Horsford eclipsed the previous national record of 70.73 which he set in winning the event at last year’s Carifta Games in St Kitts/Nevis.

Horsford was well inside the Carifta standard of 59.00. Jante Lewis (Mayaro) finished in the runner-up spot (50.27). Horsford was one of four javelin throwers from the Zenith Athletic Club to achieve the Carifta standards in their age groups.

Vandell Joseph and Odell Joseph finished one-two in the boys Under-20 event. Joseph, the Carifta bronze medallist in the boys Under-18 event in 2015, took the top spot with 59.39 ahead of Joefield’s 58.31 as the two went over the 57.00 standard.

On Saturday team-mate, last year’s Carifta silver medallist Asha James, walked away with the girls Under-18 javelin with 43.59 (standard- 40.00).

Kershell Mc Intyre (Cougars) celebrated her birthday by taking the girls Under-18 800m finals in a Carifta qualifying time of 2:25.77 to beat her team-mate Joanna Rogers (2:16.51) and the standard of 2:16.00. Another Cougars duo reigned in the boys Under-18 800m finals as Jaden St Louis won in 1:59.54 ahead of Recardo Prescott (1:59.76).

St Louis bettered the Carifta standard of 1:59.60. However, Prescott was the quickest of the day clocking 1:57.85 in the heats in the morning session.

Anya Akili (Kaizen Panthers) won a very competitive girls open hepathlon. Akili competed the seven events with 4272 points to beat Antonia Sealy (Pt. Fortin New Jets), 4207 and Ayanna Glasgow (Toco TAFAC) 4083.

Ian West (Pt Fortin New Jets) copped the boys open octathlon with 5280 points to deny Kerlon Ashby (Kaizen Panthers) 4841 and Michael McKenzie (Alpha) 4748 and Aaron Caesar (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 4591 as all four were superior to the 4500 standard.

See this link as a reminder of last year's team: 44th CARIFTA Games 2015: 3rd to 6th April, Kim Collins Stadium, St Kitts & Nevis

Thanks for bringing me up to speed about last year's numbers. . Your prediction of close to 68 is off. I count who make the standard. I predicted 40.. They sending 42.

Now I predicting 15 to 20 medals. Bahamas and Barbados will top us. Mark my words. Despite the promising athletes coming up, our track and field is in a "talent recession". Big steups..

To the TF buffs, what is the problem for this paucity of youth athletes.

Dont know Deeks. In 2010 we had our best run at Carifta. All the other Caribbean nations have improved since. I was very disappointed with the results over the weekend. The weather greatly impacted the performances.. this might explain why we will be sending a team that is around 35% less than last years team. I believe the weather was not ideal for last years Carifta trials.. Some how we were able to still send a team of 60+.

Just a fyi, the Jamaican youth are now begin to put more focus on Champs as opposed to Carifta. Reason being is that Carifta is not as competitive as Champs. Jamaica continues to break their medal count each year at Carifta. To the point that almost 95% of the Jamaican athletes win at least one medal at Carifta. Where as with us, only 40% of the athletes leave Carifta with a medal.

Wednesday, March 9 2016 (T&T Newsday)

Khaifa St Foth & Tyriq Horsford , two star TTO athletes who attained CARIFTA Standards.

Trinidad and Tobago’s World Youth 100m silver medallist Khalifa St Fort (Unattached) is among 36 athletes who have attained the the qualifying standards for this year’s Carifta Games set for St Georges, Grenada from March 26-28.

At the Carifta trials held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on the weekend, St Fort notched impressive qualifying times in winning the the girls under 20 100m (11.39) and 200m (23.64).

The 18-year-old Florida resident is expected to earn her first Carifta team selection and was among 12 girls to surpass the under 20 standard set by the National Association of Athletics Administration.

Three-time Carifta shot put champion Chelsea James surpassed the mark for the girls under 20 shot put and discus, winning the shot put (14.09) and was second in the discus (40.93).

Akili has also qualified for the girls under 18 100m hurdles with a time of 14.50 seconds.

Fourteen athletes have surpassed standards in the boys under 18 division. Defending Carifta champion and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) leads the way with a new national youth record throw of 71.52 in the boys under 18 javelin. Horsford was more than 14m over the 57.00 standard.

Khalifa St Fort will lead the charge for Trinidad and Tobago at the March 26-28 Carifta Games, in Grenada. The 2015 World Youth Championship girls’ 100 metres silver medallist is among 42 athletes selected for national duty on Easter weekend.

St Fort captured the Girls Under-20 sprint double at the Carifta trials, held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on the weekend.

The Florida-based sprinter is expected to face the starter in both the 100m and 200m events in Grenada. St Fort’s training partner, Sarah Wollaston is listed for the Under-20 100m at Carifta 2016. St Fort and Wollaston will also be on show in the 4x100m relay.

Tyriq Horsford will defend his boys’ under-18 javelin title in Grenada. On the weekend, he threw 71.52 metres to better the 70.73m national youth record he had established in winning gold at the 2015 Carifta Games. That 70.73m throw is also a Carifta Games record, and the 16-year-old Tobago thrower would be looking to improve on the regional standard when he competes at the 2016 edition of the regional junior championships.

Akanni Hislop captured the Carifta Games boys’ under-18 200m title in 2015, but is stepping up to the under-20 age-group this year. He is the lone boys’ under-20 sprinter selected.

Also on the T&T team are sprinters Adell Colthrust and Tyrell Edwards, long jumper Che Richards, hurdler Jeminise Parris, and thrower Chelsea James.

All athletes, their parents and team officials are asked to attend an important meeting tomorrow (Friday), at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Starting time is 4pm. Athletes must walk with their passports and two passport photos.

St Fort, Horsford, Hislop in TT Carifta team
By CLAYTON CLARKE Thursday, March 10 2016 (T&T Newsday)

Khaifa St Fort, Tyriq Horsford & Akanni Hislop; Star TTO athletes selected for 2016 CARIFTA Games.

World Youth silver/World Senior bronze medallist Khalifa St Fort (Unattached) was named in a 42-member team for the 45th Carifta track and field Games set for St Georges, Grenada from March 26-28.

The team includes two defending champions, two former gold medallists and nine previous medallists and was named via a press release by the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) on Tuesday following the NGC/NAAA Carifta Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on the weekend.

St Fort was named for the girls under 20 100m and 200m following her victories in both events at the trials where she clocked 11.39 and 23.64 respectively. Her training partner Sarah Wollaston has been selected for the 100m despite missing the qualifying 11.80 standard. St Fort and Wollaston are among seven girls in the under 20 division.

Renee Stoddard (Speed Factory) got the nod for the 400m as she matched the 55.30 standard at the trials. Stoddard is also listed to compete in the 200m. Former Carifta champion Jeminise Parris (Memphis Pioneers) will be this country’s representative in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

St Fort, Wollaston, Stoddard and Parris have also been named for the 4x100m team.

Three-time Carifta champion Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons) will contest the girls shot put and discus. Shiann Charles (D’Abadie Progressive) will be among the starters in the discus.

Defending gold medallist and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) is among 15 boys in the Under-18 category picked to make the trip to Grenada.

Horsford will be going for a second straight gold in the boys under 18 javelin after his national youth record throw of 71.52m at the trials. His performance was superior to his Carifta record effort of 70.73 set in taking the 2015 title. Horsford’s fellow Tobagonians Konnel Jacob (Tobago Jaguars) and Clarence Hannibal (Tobago Falcons) will contest the shot put and discus. Last year’s long jump bronze medallist Clement Campbell (Memphis Pioneers) has been picked for the triple jump as he was only third in long jump behind Josiah Edwards (Abilene Wildcats) and Aaron Cruickshank (D’Abadie Progressive) both of whom will contest the long jump. Adel Colthrust (Abilene Wildcats) and Tyrel Edwards (Toco Titans), 4x100m medallists in 2014 and 2015 respectively, are TT’s choices for the 100m.

NAAA president Ephraim Serrette said the NAAA selected a 42-member team “based on the current economic climate we are in. Carifta (Games) continue to be one of our biggest spend and we need to see returns on that and have selected a smaller team.” Commenting on only one sprinter (Akanni Hislop) selected in the under 20 division and that no 4x100m or 4x400m teams were named, he explained “if there are not qualifiers (in the individual events) it does not warrant sending a team.” He added that there is need to work with the country’s sprinters “in the same way as we have a jumps and throws programme maybe the time has come where we have to work with our sprinters as well.” He was in praise, however, of the performance of the heptathlon and octathlon) athletes.

Serrette admitted though that he was expecting better overall performances at the trials. “I am disappointed. Athletes had seven Development Meets to attain the standards, not just at the trials.

If we had athletes who were just outside the standards we could have looked at their progression in the development meets and say where they warrant that (being selected).” He also added that there is also need for hurdles programme.

“We still have this notion in that everyone in TT feel they are sprinters. We have a sprinter who can manage 10.5 or 10.6 and we can teach him to hurdle I think that is the way we have to go,” he stressed.
