Warriors to face Grenada in W/Cup qualifying Warm-Up on March 19.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

This country’s National Senior Men’s Team will face Grenada’s National Senior Team in an international friendly at the National Athletic/Football Stadium in St George’s Grenada from 7pm on March 19th.

The fixture was confirmed by Trinidad and Tobago Football Association President David John-Williams on Monday following discussions with Senior Team head coach Stephen Hart. John-Williams was able to finalize the match following previous discussions with the Grenada Football Association.

The game will serve as part of preparations for this country’s two upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers against St Vincent/Grenadines on March 25th in Kingstown and March 29th at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Hart said the game comes at a good time as he seeks to look at players who can potentially increase the national team player pool for the rest of the Qualifying campaign as well as other upcoming international competitions including the Caribbean Cup.

“Well it serves two purposes as for one I’ve been asking for a sort of local camp in which the home-based players can be looked at in a camp environment and in an international match scenario,” Hart told TTFA Media on Monday.

“And secondly the local Pro League will be breaking a few days well before we play our next two World Cup qualifiers, so getting these players together and keeping them active will keep players who can potentially be in the World Cup squad, game sharp and ready for the two games later in the month.”

“It’s good to have a game against them (Grenada) but for me what is more important is the camp environment and giving players an opportunity so that they can push to create a bigger player pool.

“We have the two qualifiers in March and then we have to potentially look at the FIFA dates in May where hopefully we can get at least two quality games, and the there’s the Caribbean Cup up which is crucial for us getting to the Gold Cup. And of course we cannot forget the closing two semi final round games in the qualification in September. This is all a good step in terms of forward planning for the long journey ahead,” Hart added.

The TTFA also wishes to extend its thanks to the TT Pro League for adjusting its fixtures to facilitate a longer period of preparation inclusive of the home-based players leading up to Friendly and the two qualifying matches. The FIFA international window begins on March 20th but the National Team will have access to the players from the Pro League a few days ahead of it the friendly fixture on March 19th in St George’s.

Hart will announce a squad for the Grenada encounter comprising largely of home-based players, later this week.

Grenada has a pretty decent history against T&T, having twice defeated the “Warriors” in CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying action, the latest being in 2010 when they defeated T&T 1-0 at the Caribbean Cup in Martinique to eliminate them. They also completed a 2-1 win in 2008 in the Caribbean Cup in Jamaica. Those two wins came in the two most recent meetings between the teams.

“They have proven to be a formidable opponent against us and I’m quite sure they will give us a good test when we get there,” Hart added.

The Grenadian National Team meantime is currently preparing for qualifying matches in the Scotiabank 2016 Caribbean Cup against St. Maarten on March 22nd and against US Virgin Islands on March 29th. Grenada, which is coached by Anthony Modeste, was eliminated in the preliminary stage of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers by Haiti last September.

T&T are currently in second place with four points in the CONCACAF semi-final round group, behind to the United States on goal difference, with Guatemala third on three points and St Vincent in fourth without a point. The top two teams from the group will advance to the CONCACAF Final round of qualification towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Hector, Hyland in squad to face Grenada
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Head Coach Stephen Hart has today announced a 22-man squad for the upcoming international friendly against Grenada in St George’s on March 19th.

The game comes as part of preparation for the 2018 CONCACAF Semi-Final Round World Cup qualifiers against St Vincent/Grenadines on March 25th in Kingstown and March 29th at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

As hinted earlier by Hart, the squad comprises mainly home-based players and sees the return of DirecTV W Connection midfielder Hughtun Hector who was sidelined from action for close to year with injury before making his return a few weeks ago.

Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland is available for selection and has been included in the squad which includes four players from Hart’s team that have been involved in the qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup so far. Those other players include goalkeeping duo Jan Michael Williams and Marvin Phillip and defender Daneil Cyrus. Some other names that have been in the national squad previous, who have been selected for this friendly include W Connection’s Shahdon Winchester, Alvin Jones and Jomal Williams, Central FC midfielder Sean De Silva, Marcus Joseph and Leston Paul.

In a brief statement, Hart said: “I am looking for players who adapt quickly and can bring something different to the present squad. I am also looking to create a deeper playing pool, with an aim of establishing competition for places.

“This game will serve its purpose in that way and it provides that opportunity for players who have been knocking on the door. And of course we have a few of the regular squad players who will add that stability and experience to the team that will play in Grenada. This is also a good opportunity for us to get these players, several of them new to the stage of international football, in a training camp environment which allows us to see how the react to such conditions,” Hart added on Friday.

The team will enter a training camp on Sunday and will hold its first training session on Monday morning at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium. Sessions will take place both at the Manny Ramjohn and Ato Boldon Stadium prior to the team’s departure on March 18th.   The game on March 19th is scheduled for 7pm a the Grenada National Athletic Stadium in St George’s.

Interesting to see Hyland's club releasing for this game when they're in season. I wonder how he managed to pull that off?

Jones: We can be unstoppable.
TTFA MEDIA.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Stephen Hart commenced preparations with a selection of home based professions on Monday morning at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium for Saturday’s international friendly against Grenada in St George’s.

There were several new faces involved with the likes of Daneil Cyrus, Morvant Caledonia United goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, DirecTV W Connection forward Shahdon Winchester, Defence Force defender Curtis Gonzales,Police custodian Adrian Foncette and Connection midfielder Hughtun Hector being among those with previous international experience.

Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland is expected to join the training on Tuesday as Hart conducts double sessions at the Manny Ramjohn and Ato Boldon Stadium.

There was some news of concern over goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams who suffered a dislocated shoulder while on duty with Central FC in Caribbean Club Championship action in Jamaica on Sunday and according to Hart, will not be involved in the fixture with Grenada. Police custodian Foncette and Phillip will travel as the two goalkeepers. There was also word that Cordell Cato has been ruled out of the match with St Vincent due to a hamstring injury.

Hart is expected to name his squad for the two World Cup qualifiers next week. And among those expected to make the cut is Seattle Sounders player Joevin Jones. The ex-W Connection midfielder said on Tuesday that he felt the game versus Grenada would provide a timely opportunity for some of the home-based players to give Hart something extra to consider regarding future team selections,

“I think it’s a good way to see what talent there is out there that can come in and add something to the current team,” Jones told TTFA Media.

“I remember when I was in a similar stage in my career and how I felt when these kind of opportunities came. I knew when I got called up that I would have to go out and make an impression and force the coaches to keep an eye on me and keep in the selection for future games.

“Hopefully the guys can grab this chance and push on in their careers and at the same time bring some kind of added value to the team.”

Looking ahead to the two qualifying matches, the 24-year-old Carenage-born wingback, said while history would show that St Vincent is capable of posing a difficult challenge for the ‘Warriors” he expects Hart’s men to come out on top but will take nothing for granted.

“I think we have to leave nothing behind for these two games, especially the opening match in St Vincent. I remember in the past we’ve always had a tricky situation to face when these so called smaller Caribbean teams came up against us.

“But I think we have a strong force and enough fire to get the job done. As I see it, six points in these two games is totally gettable and would put us in a bit of a comfortable situation for the last round of matches,” Jones stated,

“Once are prepared to go out there and put in the hard work and then transfer it into the games, then we can be unstoppable,” he ended.

Tickets are on sale at Sports and Games Nationwide, Sportway Ellerslie Plaza and Gulf City, Kenny’s Sports Nationwide, Heritage Sports in Tobago, Ramsingh’s Sportworld in Couva and online at TTFootball.org

Yuh know what? Standing on its own, a fair amount of flexibility and versatility exists in this local-based squad. It all depends on what kind of juice we want to make.

Highlights of what is perhaps the last occasion the two nations met.

Villaroel is a left wingback and Jones is a utility player like his brother, but he mostly plays defense (right wing-back or central). I think Andre Ettienne and Jamali Garcia are the only out and out central defenders in the squad.

I did dat ting six years ago. It only supports 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 4-3-3, 3-5-2, and 2-3-5. If yuh want more sophistication then use lineup builder.

This is how my starting XI looks as a 4-2-3-1.

Niceness. Good link. I think I will be staying away from the 2-3-5. :)
