BIG THROW: Akeem Stewart

Akeem Stewart produced a big 19.26 metres throw to win the Falcon Games men's shot put event, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, on Saturday.

The 23-year-old para athlete underlined his class with a dominant display against able-bodied opponents. Shervorne Worrell was more than four metres adrift of Stewart, claiming silver with a 15.12m effort. Kesean Phillips (14.61m) picked up bronze.

Stewart opened the competition at 18.53m, and followed up with the big 19.26m throw. The Parapan American double gold medallist fouled in round three, but came back strong in the fourth round, throwing the iron ball 18.55m. He fouled again in round five, before closing off at 18.32m.

Stewart's winning throw was just eight centimetres short of the 19.34m Trinidad and Tobago record he had established in April 2013.

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: Akeem Stewart (Tobago Falcons) and Che Richards (Oasics) were the stand-out performers on the first day of the 15th annual Tobago Falcons Games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet on Saturday (March, 19).

Stewart took the men’s shot put with a season’s best throw of 19.26m. The winning mark was short of his national record of 19.34 set in 2013. The victory is the second straight for the 2011 double Carifta medallist who won at the Southern Games in Guaracara Park in Trinidad (March 13) with 18.34, his previous season’s best. The 23 year old is was aiming for the Olympic qualifying standard of 20.50. Stewart is the 2015 Para-Pan American double gold medallist and is looking to qualify for the Rio Olympics in Brazil in Augusts as he has already booked his spot at the Rio Paralympics Games. He is seeking to become the first local athlete to compete at both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Taking the minor places were 2011 Carifta boys under 17 discus champion Shervorne Worrell (UTT), 15.12 and Kesean Phillips (UWI), 14.61 in a repeat of the podium finish at the Southern Games.

Richards topped the field in the men’s long jump with a personal best of  7.44m/0.8m/s. The 2013 Carifta boys under 17 bronze medallist and 2015 National Open Academic Scolarship winner in Languages improved on his previous best of 7.30 set at winning at the Carifta trials on March 6. Multiple Southern Games champion Dwaine Herbert (UTT), 6.89, took the runner-up spot ahead of his younger brother Dwight (Warriors) 6.83.  Richards showed that he is shape to vie for the gold in the boys under 20 event at this year’s Carifta Games in St. Georges, Grenada next weekend (March 26-28). He is one of 42 athletes who will representing T&T at the regional meet.

Former World Indoor and Junior 4x400m bronze medallist Jereem Richards (Unattached) took the men’s 400m (46.65) ahead of Kyle Greaux (Abilene Wildcats), 47.32, and Tacuma Sterling (Alpha), 47.69. Three -time Carifta shot put gold medallist Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons) also fine-tuned her Carifta preparation by triumphing in the women’s discus (43.37) ahead of 43 year old multiple World Masters champion Geraldine George (Pt. Fortin New Jets), 36.58 and Chevelle Mc Pherson (Zenith), 34.06. Chelsea will be vying for gold in the girls under 20 shot put and discus in Grenada.

Reigning Carifta boys under 18 javelin champ and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) led several other Carifta-bound athletes to victories. Horsford took the boys under 18 javelin with a toss of 67.91, well short of his 71.52m national youth record at the Carifta Trials. Tyrel Edwards (Toco-Titans-boys under 18 100m-11.12/-1.3), Vandel Joseph (Zenith-men’s javelin-60.93), Josiah Edwards (Abilene Wildcats-boy’s under  18 long jump-6.78), Clarance Hannibal (Tobago Falcons-boys under 18 shot put-15.47), Ako Hislop (Zenith-boy’s under 18 110m hurdles-14.59/-0.2), Jenea Spinks (Concorde-girls under 18 100m-12.29/-1.8 ), Anya Akili (Kaizen Panthers-girls under 18 100m hurdles-14.49/-2.0) and Joanna Rogers (Cougars-girls under 16 400m-57.32) all registered wins before flying over to the Spice Island.

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: Tobago throwers made full use of competing at home to shine in front of their supporters at the 15th annual Tobago Falcons Games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet on March 19 & 20.

Leading the way was double Para-Pan American Games champion and World Parathlete record holder Akeem Stewart of the host club Tobago Falcons. Stewart followed up his impressive victory in the men’s shot put (19.26m) on first day of action on Saturday by taking the men’s discus with a mark of 55.84m, less than two metres of his personal best 57.57m set earlier this year.

Stewart was not the only Tobago Falcons thrower to achieve the throws double as three-time Carifta champion Chelsea James (women’s shot put-13.43 , discus-43.47), Clarence Hannibal (boys under 18 shot put-15.47, discus-46.84) and Christopher Crawford (boys under 16 shot put-12.61, discus-42.59) all mounted the top of the podium twice.  James and Hannibal will be hoping for similar success at the Carifta Games in St. Georges, Grenada on the weekend.

Zenith athletes showed their strength in the javelin as last year’s Carifta girls under 18 silver medallist Asha James led a Zenith sweep of the Girls under 18 event on the second day on Sunday with a distance of 46.69 to a finish ahead of club mates Kymoi Noray (39.38) and Talena Murray (35.68) as she did at the Carifta trials on March 5 & 6.

Asha will also be going for gold in Grenada. On Saturday, reigning Carifta boys under 18 champion and record holder Tyriq Horsford took the boys under 18 title (67.91) for Zenith ahead of team-mate Kareem Peters (45.39).  Another Zenith athlete, Vandel Joseph, secured the men’s top prize with 60.93 with Jeffrey Williams (Kaizen Panthers) of Tobago in second (58.03).  Zenith also had success in the girls under 18 shot put (Tonya Chapman-12.15) and discus (Chloe Roberts-23.10). Toco Titans’ Josoynia Fifi upset the Tobago trend by winning the girls under 16 shot put (11.73) and discus (21.13).

On the track 2014 World Relay 4x100m bronze medallist Kamaria Durant (Simplex) sped to her second sprint double in as many meets. Durant took the women’s 100m (11.95/-1.7) and 200m (23.93/-1.6) running into head winds. At the Southern Games at Point-a-Pierre on March 13 she also won the 100 and 200m titles.

The 2015 World Championships campaigner was one of seven athletes to record double victories on the track. Janae De Gannes (Zenith) was most impressive of them all as she ran away with the girls under 12 60m and 150m titles and narrowly missed on medalling in the girls under 16 long jump. The younger sister of national junior table-tennis player Jasher De Gannes finished fourth in the long jump. Other double winners were: Imanni Matthews (Toco Titans)- G U10 60m/150m, Tyrese James (Silver Bullets) B U12 60m/150m, Shaniqua Bascombe (Cougars) G U14 100m/200m, Shakeem Mc Kay (Memphis Pioneers) B U14 100m/200m and Katie Chehowy (Caltaf-CAN) Women 1500m/3000m.

In the 4x100m and 4x400m relays  Abilene Wildcats took three victories (B U 18 4x100m, 4x400m & men’s 4x100m) while Cougars secured the mixed under 12 4x100m and mixed under 16 4x400m gold medals.
Memphis Pioneers (mixed under 14 4x100m), Point Fortin New Jets (boys under 16 4x100m), TTDF (men’s 4x400m) and the Carifta Girls under 18 (women’s 4x100m) all secured relay titles.

Over the two days of action athletes from athletic clubs in Trinidad and Tobago matched strides against competitors from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Canada, Suriname. Among the sponsors of the 15th annual Tobago Falcons Games were the Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport of the Tobago House of Assembly, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, TSTT, Office Authority, Rena’s Roti Shop, Star Excavation and Transport, Viola’s Place, The Mangrove Shop, John Plumbing and Brantal’s Grill House.
