Club Sando hires Angus Eve in search of lift

Club Sando hires Angus Eve in search of lift
ttproleague.com

Club Sando became the latest project of Angus Eve after the former North East Stars and St. Ann’s Rangers coach agreed to a three-year agreement with the Digicel Pro League (DPL) club for the upcoming 2016/17 season and onwards.

“The plan is to improve on what Sando did last season [in the league],” said Eve who wants his new side, Sando, to also push for the First Citizens Cup and Digicel Pro Bowl finals in the upcoming season. “Nothing is beyond us as Leicester City demonstrated last season [in the English Premier League]. Sando made no finals last year, so to make it to two this season will be an improvement. If we can do that then we will give a go at titles.

“But for now we are realistic,” added Eve. “Our team are young. We are not W Connection who have a very young team but very experienced due to play at the CONCACAF Champions League experience and international exposure. So it’s a matter of managing our expectations at Sando.”

The expectations are high—a top half of the table finish this season and eventually the DPL crown—from Eve’s new employers. “We don’t expect success overnight,” said Club Sando boss and San Fernando businessman Eddison “Eddie” Dean. “We are a 25-year-old club and it took us quite some time to dominate the South Zone and then it took us some time before dominating the Super League. [But] I hope it don’t take as long to dominate the Pro League.”

Since joining Sando in June, Eve has made “wholesale changes” to the club’s roster with goalkeeper Stefan Berkeley, midfielders Kevon Piper and Keron Cornwall and forward Trevin Latapy all joining from Rangers. Former North East Stars midfielder Jamaican Keithy Simpson has also reunited with Eve following a stint Finland.

Other signings include Akeem Roach (Defence Force), Leslie Russell (Morvant Caledonia United), Kevin Lewis (Police FC), Vincentian Nical Stephens (Cunupia United), Jayson Joseph, Nicolas Thomas (Point Fortin Civic) and Kaashif Thomas (San Juan Jabloteh). While Kemuel Rivers, Shaquille Holder, Akeem Humphrey, Jared London, goalkeeper Kelvin Henry and former Naparima College captains Michael Basdeo and Amrit Gilharry have all been retained. Eve has also promoted 20-year-old midfielder Anderson Toussaint from Sando’s Super League team.

Sando made their Pro League debut last season, finishing seventh on the 10-team DPL standings under coach Anthony Streete who had led them to the Super League title the previous season and before that a runners-up finish.

But at the end of last season, Sando parted ways with Streete, who has now returned to his old employers Rangers, who failed to avoid a third consecutive cellar-position finish last season even with Eve at the helm. Credit to Eve, however, Rangers’ play showed improvement while nearly tripling their points tally from the season before under previous coaches.

Prior to his stint at Rangers, Eve had a three-year spell at North East Stars – his first position as head coach of a professional club – and led the Sangre Grande club to the 2012 Toyota Classic and 2015 TTFA FA Trophy. Also during his tenure, Eve guided North East Stars to 4th (2012-13), 5th (2013-14), and 4th (2014-15) finishes in the DPL.

Eve also had successful spells at San Juan Jabloteh (2006–2009) and Ma Pau SC (2009–2011) as assistant coach to Terry Fenwick and Michael Mc Comie, respectively, while his international coaching experience stands at having a stint as the Trinidad and Tobago Under-23 team for the 2012 Olympic qualifiers.

However it was the former Trinidad and Tobago international’s coaching success with Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) giants Naparima College over the past years, including last season’s treble (National Inter-Col, South Inter-Col and Premier League) that captured the interest of Sando, with club boss Eddison Dean a Naparima College old boy and keen supporter of “Naps” football team.

Eve said his philosophy to develop young players for the development of Trinidad and Tobago football while creating better opportunities for youngsters align with the thinking of Dean.

Eve has acquired the services of former Guyana international Charles Pollard as assistant coach and former San Juan Jabloteh and North East Stars goalkeeper coach Brian James, both who had lengthy playing careers in the Pro League.

Eve will face his former employers when Club Sando tackle San Juan Jabloteh on September 30 from 5pm at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin in the opening game of the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League followed by home side Point Fortin Civic against Morvant Caledonia United from 7:30pm to complete a South vs North double-header at the venue.

Hood optimistic as Police looks to new Pro League season.
ttproleague.com.

Police FC coach Richard Hood wants his men to show their full potential in the shortened 2016/17 season which runs September to February.

The Lawmen will kick-off their Digicel Pro League (DPL) 2016/17 campaign on Tuesday October 4 against Ma Pau Stars, formerly North East Stars, but action commences on Friday September 30 with a South-vs-North double-header at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin. (See schedule below)

This season the DPL will have two Rounds, with teams facing each other twice and not the regular three Rounds, while only the First Citizens Cup and Digicel Pro Bowl knockout competitions will be contested to facilitate the shortened season format before the Pro League reverts to its April to December calendar for the 2017 season.

Hood said his players have the “potential to do really well” and the ultimate goal of Police FC has always been to win titles.

Police came closest to ending a two-decade title drought in 2014 by reaching the final of the Digicel Pro Bowl, under Hood, but lost to W Connection in the title game. The Lawmen last enjoyed silverware in 1994 with the National League and FA Trophy double.

Hood believes it has been difficult for most of his players in overcoming psychological and physical challenges in balancing their jobs as policemen and the football.

“The fact is that we are not fully a professional team,” Hood said. “We have the players with the quality but always had the problem having to battle with the football and duties [off the field]. Our players can’t dedicate their lives to the football as a professional team could. It’s not comfortable for the players and it makes it even more difficult to try and have success on the field. This has been responsible for a lot of the inconsistencies in our performances.”

Last season Police finished sixth in the Digicel Pro League – their best finish in the last three seasons – and Hood, who pointed out that his team were second at the end of Round One, stands optimistic ahead of the shortened 2016/17 season although being without scoring ace Makesi Lewis who suffered a broken leg in pre-season training after colliding with a goalkeeper.

Lewis, who is expected to be out for eight months, top scored in the DPL last season with 20 goals while his performances won him three international caps with the Trinidad and Tobago team against Grenada, Uruguay and China.

“We will miss having Makesi (Lewis) but I am hoping that other players can take up the mantle,” said Hood. “We have players that can destroy any defence at any given time. It’s now for those players to go out and show a little more maturity and do well. It’s also my job to find the best way for the players.

“I expect us to have a really good season. We encountered a number of problems along the way last season in our goalkeeping department with (Adrian) Foncette away at times as well as a number of injuries. But things are expected to be better this season having goalkeeper Foncette for the full season as well as a number of new additions to the squad.”

Hood has boosted his arsenal with the return of former Trinidad and Tobago Under-23 midfielder Micah Lewis, who spent last season in Turkey with lower division side Serik Belediyespor, as well as new signings in former T&T youth captain and defender Ryan O’Neil (St. Ann’s Rangers), Nideon Noel (Point Fortin Civic), Kadeem Hutchinson (St. Ann’s Rangers), Ken Ceohas, Xavier Wheeler, Nequan Caruth and Joshua Leach.

Regular captain and veteran midfielder Todd Ryan will again lead the squad inclusive of goalkeepers Adrian Foncette and Theon Browne; defenders Karlon Murray, Anton Hutchinson, Dexter Alleyne, Elijah Belgrave, Jibri Mc David, Akeil Thomas and Kemron Purcell; midfielders Kaaron Foster, Kareem Freitas, Dillon Kirton, Kurdell Brathwaite, Kadeem Riley, Christon Thomas, Wendell Joseph and Kenaz Williams; forwards Jameel Perry, Keion Wilson, Shaquille Nesbitt and utility player Clevon Mc Fee.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Can someone please inform me where each team will be playing their home games this season.

For the last two seasons we have argued the issue of home games being played not at home and also argued the responsibility for clubs to develop grassroots relationships with their home communities to garner home support for games. But to start off this season where will Club Sando, Caledonia, Jabloteh, Pont Fortin be playing their home games this season?

Stronger Jabloteh but tougher season predicts Jeffrey
« Reply #8 on: September 26, 2016, 05:14:40 PM »
Stronger Jabloteh but tougher season predicts Jeffrey
ttproleague.com

San Juan Jabloteh head coach Keith Jeffrey predicts the upcoming Digicel Pro League season will be tougher than the last.

Jeffrey, who led the San Juan Kings to one of two Concacaf Champions League qualifying spots – the Caribbean Club Championship 2017 – by finishing runners-up in the DPL behind two-time reigning champions Central FC, said the ambition is to achieve another top-two finish in 2016/17.

To try and achieve his goal, Jeffrey has boosted his squad with the San Juan return of Trinidad and Tobago international forward Willis Plaza and midfielder Elijah Manners, as well as talented T&T Under-20 defender Keston Julien and midfielders Kion Joseph and 27-year-old Canadian Lukas Risto. Plaza, who last represented El Salvador’s Allanza and Risto, formerly of Toronto Skillz FC, are pending international transfer certificates (ITC).

“Plaza will always make a contribution in the Pro League. He is the kind of player that any club will want once you want to achieve things,” said Jeffrey, who also believes Manners, Julien, Joseph and Risto can make huge contributions for his team in the coming season.

Jabloteh have retained the services of Grenada international Shemel Lousion, Guyanese Andrew Durant and Trinidadian Raheem Belgrave in the goalkeeping department; defenders Aquil Selby, Akeem Benjamin, Jevon Morris, Jerome Mc Intyre and Josiah Trimmingham; midfielders Sean Bonval, Brent Sam and Jamaica duo Damian Williams and Adrian Reid; and forwards Jamal Gay, Keyon Edwards, Tyrone Charles, Noel Williams and Trinidad and Tobago international Nathan Lewis.

Lewis, the club's most prolific forward last season, who was shot in his shoulder earlier this month during a drive-by shooting in his Maloney hometown, will miss the opening games while Jamaican playmaker Fabian Reid has returned to his homeland – for personal reasons following the birth of his daughter – where he joined Arnett Gardens.

“Our new signings have made us a stronger team than last season,” continued the Jabloteh coach. “[But] you have to be at the top of your game else you will lose. The league was close last season and this season it will be tougher.”

Jeffrey said Defence Force’s chemistry, having the same bunch of players for the longest period, and Central FC, the two-time reigning Caribbean and League champions, will give the biggest challenge. But also warned that W Connection, with a youthful but experienced squad, Club Sando, with new coach Angus Eve at the helm, and North East Stars with their new signings and coach Ross Russell, are other difficult opponents to be wary of.

“But if I have my way, I would like Jabloteh to finish on top and Police second,” continued Jeffrey, a former policeman and player. “Police have a good team but have beaten themselves a lot of times. I would like to see them return to the glory days.”

Jabloteh will tackle Club Sando on Friday September 30 from 5pm at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin in the opening game of the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League followed by home side Point Fortin Civic against Morvant Caledonia United from 7:30pm to complete a South-vs-North double-header at the venue.

Maritime gets a kick out of Central FC

Maritime gets a kick out of Central FC
Central FC Media

Today, financial services giant The Maritime Financial Group announced their new partnership with Caribbean Club Champions, Central F.C.

Maritime will utilise Central's community programme as part of their commitment to supporting youth empowerment and community development in T&T.

“We will be devising several community projects with Maritime's core values in mind,” said Central F.C. Managing Director, Brent Sancho. “Once we met with [Maritime CEO] Andrew [Ferguson] and his team, we recognised that we were both on the same page with regards to Corporate Social Responsibility, and that by harnessing the strengths of both organisations, we can deliver meaningful projects to the community.”

With the two-time Pro League champions embarking this week for their Champions League encounter against Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada on Wednesday, the timing couldn't be better.

“It will be a proud moment for the team to step out on global television with the Maritime logo on our jerseys” said Sancho, who confirmed that Maritime would also be featured on all training and travel attire.

Speaking on the new partnership, Ferguson said, “For us at Maritime, Corporate Social Responsibility is about more than just filling a quota or responding to a mandate. It’s important to us that we identify opportunities where we can make a genuine difference to the communities we serve, especially when we are reaching out to young people. We believe that this partnership with Central’s programme will allow us to do exactly that: make a lasting impact by engaging young people through sport, a medium that fosters a sense of unity and togetherness that is essential to building strong communities for the future.”

Central will return from their 18-hour journey to Vancouver in time for the launch of the 2016-17 Pro League season which kicks off in Point Fortin on Friday evening with a double header. Central will see their first league action against fellow Champions League contenders W.Connection in a thrilling opening game at Ato Boldon on Tuesday.

“It's always exciting to begin a new page in the club's history,” said Sancho. “We have been extremely fortunate in working with some great sponsors since we were formed in 2012, and we look forward to a productive partnership with The Maritime Financial Group.”

Morvant Caledonia United ready to play flair-filled attacking football
Morvant Caledonia United Media

With a new head coach and a World Cup veteran in its ranks, football fans can expect great things from Morvant Caledonia United in the 2016/2017 T&T Pro League.

Since winning the 2016 Lucozade Goal Shield, Morvant Caledonia United is demonstrating its continued push for trophies with the appointment of new head coach, Rajesh Latchoo.

Latchoo, a former National Youth coach and assistant Women Soca Warriors coach, has come into the role of head coach for the senior team vowing to build on the success and style of play developed by former coach Jerry Moe.

He says fans can expect football filled with an attacking flair to be on show at Morvant Caledonia United this season as the players “have freedom to play more attacking football while still using the great passing ability and philosophy they learnt under the last Coach.”

Latchoo believes his team’s strength plays right into that passing/attacking philosophy and issues a challenge to other Pro League teams saying, “I have faith in all my players this year especially my midfielders and I believe I have the best midfield in the Pro League…on the field and on the bench…and I would like to see other teams try to stop them.”

Caledonia’s midfield is certainly boosted with the return of veteran midfielder Densill Theobald whom Latchoo describes as vital saying, “Densill is a vital part of the team because with his experience and knowledge it is easier for those around him to play attacking football”.

Latchoo looks forward to giving the younger players on the team the chance to learn from Theobald who also believes it is his responsibility to give back to a league and a country that have helped to define him and his career.

Theobald insists the Pro league is an excellent development pool for the National Team and is hoping to not only nurture Caledonia’s young local talent into potential Soca Warriors but to also meet the goal set for him by Coach Latchoo of earning a recall to the National Team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Aside from nurturing his young teammates and earning his recall, Theobald is already eyeing trophies and foresees that the current mix of players has what it takes to bring the 2016/2017 TT Pro League title to the Morvant Caledonia Community.

And while Coach Latchoo also has an eye on the 2016/2017 TT Pro League title, he has reminded the entire team that the bigger picture is a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League next season and with a barrage of talent at their disposal, the Stallions seem to be well on their way to achieving this goal and bringing pride to the Morvant Caledonia community.

More community grounds as Pro League seek turning point towards self-sufficiency
ttproleague.com

With the Digicel Pro League 2016/17 season set to commence on the weekend, TT Pro League chief executive officer Dexter Skeene was pleased to announce, that through the support of the Trinidad and Tobago Government and local government, more community grounds are earmarked to become available for professional play.

Defence Force Headquarters Ground in Chaguaramas, Irwin Park in Siparia and Park Street Recreation Ground in Morvant, together with the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin and Barataria Recreation Ground, will all come alive for the new season. While the Diego Martin, Carenage and Sangre Grande recreation grounds are expected to be upgraded within the next two years.

All this, including the coining of a new motto – Your Clubs, Your League, Reaching Communities, Creating Stars – focused on the new thrust of the League, were revealed during the official launch of the DPL 2016/17 on Tuesday morning in the Digicel Corporate Box of the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

Skeene, during his remarks, referenced the Major League Soccer (MLS) which, in its early years, experienced financial and operational struggles despite millions of dollars pumped in by wealthy owners Lamar Hunt of the Dallas Cowboys, Phillip Anschutz and Bob Kraft. The MLS had lost millions of dollars, while teams played in mostly empty American football stadiums back then, but today, with soccer-specific venues, average MLS attendance exceeds that of the National Hockey League (NHL) and National Basketball League (NBA). The MLS has also secured TV deals and is now profitable.

“The catalyst for investment, they state, came with the advent of investment in soccer specific stadia throughout the US in soccer mad cities,” said Skeene. “None of these projects were mega constructions so they were not mega risks. They were scaled to 20,000-30,000 capacity buildings which were initially funded by the owners but subsequently with the increase in franchises, the municipalities were willing to contribute.

“I am pleased to state that we have reached this juncture in our history,” continued the Pro League CEO. “The Minister of Sport, together with the Ministry, the Sport Company and local government are willing to work together to upgrade football friendly facilities – my term for soccer specific stadia – to enhance the League’s attendance and build the fan base of the clubs, thereby providing the tools necessary to become self-sufficient and viable.”

Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Darryl Smith, also speaking during the launch, concurred. “Everywhere I go, people ask for the Pro League in the communities,” he said. “People in the community want to identify, they want to feel proud.

“There is no secret that [football] is the number one sport in Trinidad and Tobago. (…)We are dependent on oil and gas but I’ve always said from day one, our greatest resource shouldn’t be oil and gas, [it] should be the young men that play in the Pro League, in the Secondary Schools League and so on. We have to invest in the young people.”

Smith, a former national youth footballer who earned a full football scholarship in the United States where he attained a BSc. in Business and MSc. in Business Administration, added, “I was able to beg and the whole cabinet was very understanding knowing that this is part of our manifesto. The policy of the country right now is to pump sports back in the grassroots areas.

“It won’t happen overnight – it will take a while as revenue comes in and the monies are released – but by next year or the year after I am hoping that all the games will be played at the community level and don’t have to be in the stadium. You have the commitment from me, you have the commitment from the government to work with you all with regards to the grassroots level and that aspect of it,” Smith told all present during the launch.

Smith also cooled concerns over the Government’s subvention to the League and clubs. “At no time we have ever said we are not going to support the League. We understand the importance [of the League] and the work you all do, and we respect that. We will continue assisting you all this season and we will come together again next year and discus to see how we can move forward.”

With new developments unfolding, Lori Ann Glasgow, head of marketing at Digicel, said, “It is a proud moment on behalf of Digicel to say we have witnessed the League grow from strength to strength, providing a platform for footballers to showcase their talent and of course to compete for very attractive prizes.”

The Jamaica-born Glasgow continued, “We are especially excited for the 2016/17 season as we are taking the games to the communities. This transition of the Pro League to the community fields brings the players straight to the fans. No doubt this will spark even more excitement and passion for the game. We commend the League and its officials for their sterling efforts and dedication towards, not only the game of football, but more importantly to the players of this country.”

On Friday the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin will feature the opening games this season with a South-vs-North double-header. Club Sando will tackle last season’s runners-up San Juan Jabloteh from 5pm before home side Point Fortin Civic welcomes Morvant Caledonia United from 7:30pm.

“We have come a long way,” Skeene said. “…this year the owners clubs, coaches and players are united in taking the games to the community. We continue to challenge ourselves to re-examine every year the prevailing circumstances and economic conditions to apply the strategies necessary to become profitable.”

This season the league format will have two Rounds and the First Citizens Cup and Digicel Pro Bowl knockout tournaments from September 2016 to February 2017 with the next season reverting to the April to December format.

Skeene continued, “The clubs have also come together to strategise and execute with respect to the marketing aspects of the Digicel Pro League competition and it augurs well for the league and aligns with our motto, one people one vision one culture striving for excellence.

“Keeping alive the dream of a professional football league in Trinidad and Tobago and being the flag bearer of the Sport industry in Trinidad and Tobago hasn't been an easy journey thus far. But our unconditional love and undiminished passion for football and belief of the power of football to make a significant difference in the lives of the youth of the nation fuels our desire and hunger to keep the battle going.”

Ex-Feyenoord player Christopher Furlong takes over at Point Fortin Civic.
ttproleague.com.

Christoper Furlong, a Feyenoord Rotterdam and Blauw-Wit Amsterdam winger in Holland during the late 60’s and early 70’s, is back at his hometown club, Point Fortin Civic, for a second stint as coach—but first in the Digicel Pro League.

The 69-year-old Furlong, who coached the Civic in the late 70’s, is now the third former Trinidad and Tobago and Point Fortin star after Reynold Carrington and Leroy De Leon to take up the hot seat since the club entered the Pro League in 2013.

Furlong, a former Grenada national team and Olympic team coach, also had coaching stints with Kingston Lions in Jamaica, Lambada in Barbados, Science International in Canada and Secondary Schools League outfits Fyzabad and his alma mater St. Benedict’s College in Trinidad. His most recent coaching stint, prior to returning to Civic, was at Grenada national league side Paradise FC.

Furlong, who believes T&T is in much need of a national academy for football due to the low standard of play and football knowledge even at the national level, has broken down his ambition for Civic into the stages of: developing players, lifting the standard of play, then getting the players to the point where they can become exportable.

“We will see a lot of improvement [at Civic] over time,” said Furlong, a former Civic and T&T national teammate of De Leon, Warren Archibald, Steve David and Wilfred Cave. “We will play quality football – not that I am saying we are going to win the league [just yet] but the aim is to give a good account of ourselves.”

However Furlong, who also enjoyed playing stints in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with Kansas City Spurs and Dallas Tornadoes, conceded that the players of his hometown community of Point Fortin aren’t as passionate as before.

Civic, on debut in 2013/14, finished in an admirable fourth position at the end of the season under Carrington, who, after a string of abysmal performances, was replaced by De Leon beyond the halfway mark in 2014/15. De Leon in the position as caretaker hit the ground running and finished Civic in a creditable fifth position. But last season, continuing in the post as head coach, an eight place finish on the 10-team table brought an end to De Leon’s time in charge.

Civic’s chairman, Garthorn Craig, said it was a mutual decision following discussions with De Leon, who remains a Board member.

“It was based on performance,” Craig said. “He (De Leon) started brilliantly but it didn’t go well after that and he understood this. The results weren’t what we expected and we weren’t where we wanted to be at the end of the season. Now we are happy to go with another son of the soil.”

The mandate for Furlong, according to Craig, is to develop the relatively young squad to be competitive but while there is time to allow development, the plan is not to “just roll over and die” this season.

Civic have added competition to their goalkeeping department with Callum Marshall and Tevin Moore who will compete with regulars shot-stoppers Akini Adams and Miles Goodman for starting positions.

Kurfi Pierre, Trent Lougheed, Shequille Stewart, Shevon Abraham, Keron Neptune, Kerlon Richards, Shane Garraway, Ancil Wells and Orin Branker make up defensive options while veteran player Nickcolson Thomas, Akeem Redhead, Shaquille Dublin, Rondell Phillip, Necarlon Tuton, Tyrell Johnson and Kestwin Goolie are midfielders. While Jamille Boatswain, Sylvester Teesdale, Austin Hernandez, Tereek Joseph and 25-year-old United States-born Nigerian Kehinde Olakunie will compete for starting positions up front.

“Our team are a team in progress although I can say there is some ability and enthusiasm present,” continued Craig. “We have a lot of young players based on our budget, as we were unable to keep some of the more experienced players.”

Civic will kick-off their 2016/17 campaign at home when the host Morvant Caledonia United from 7:30pm at the Mahaica Oval on Friday September 30 following a 5pm kick-off between Club Sando and San Juan Jabloteh at the Point Fortin venue.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

New Caledonia coach Rajesh Latchoo ready to turn up the heat

New Caledonia coach Rajesh Latchoo ready to turn up the heat
ttproleague.com

Rajesh Latchoo, the new coach of former Caribbean Club champions Morvant Caledonia United, wants to turn up the heat, especially in offence, while sticking with the club’s style of possession play.

Latchoo, who will play a 4-3-3 system and not the 4-4-2 system previously employed by MCU, gets his first test on Friday Sep. 30 when the Digicel Pro League (DPL) 2016/17 season kicks-off with a South-vs-North double-header at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

Morvant Caledonia United and home side Point Fortin Civic who both finished at the bottom last season – only ahead of cellar-placed St. Ann’s Rangers – will tackle each other from 7:30pm after a 5pm kick-off between Club Sando and last season's DPL runners-up San Juan Jabloteh at the Point Fortin venue.

“My philosophy at Caledonia is to improve the possession to penetrate!" explained Latchoo who has replaced coach Jerry Moe this season. "…because we are accustomed with the possession and knocking [the ball around]. But now we want to add a little more flare to the football, a little more speed in the attack and [knowing] when to penetrate especially down the flanks and through the centre. We want more stretch, more attacking, more entertaining football.”

The 33-year-old Latchoo, a former Joe Public (Pro League and Super League) and Barackpore United (Super League) head coach, was a member of Moe's coaching staff at Morvant Caledonia United in the past three seasons as assistant coach as well as served as Director of Youth Football—a position now taken over by longstanding servant of the club, Moe.

Latchoo, back with the status as the youngest head coach in the Pro League, also had coaching stints at the national level—in both the male youth and women’s divisions—and is a Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) coach instructor.

“Our long term strategic plan is about building our staff to improve their competencies and this exercise is to complete that part of the process,” explained Morvant Caledonia United boss Jamaal Shabazz. “It was a perfect switch for both individuals. We need a little more management focus on the senior level – and for the youths we need more dynamism for the drills.”

Shabazz, MCU’s technical director and former Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana national team coach, continued, “In the last two years we (MCU) have made a more serious approach to youth development at the club. And by taking the person (Jerry Moe) responsible for drilling the style of play for so many years at the senior level and putting him in the youth programme shows where our head space is at the moment.

“Jerry is in his second season [at the Secondary Schools Football League] with San Juan North Secondary and Latchoo have also had experience with Joe Public and Barackpore United. We are confident that on both counts, youth and senior level, we see this move will bear dividends.”

Shabazz said he would like to see MCU—at least—finish second, a position the former Caribbean Club champions achieved in 2011/12. But says “staff and senior players found this request to be modest and want nothing but first spot.”

This season, Caledonia have welcomed the return of 2006 World Cup midfielder Densill Theobald, adding to a mixture of youth and experience with goalkeepers Marvin Phillip of the T&T national team, Stephon Seepersad and Hakeem Thomas; defenders Jair Edwards, Guyana’s Kevin Layne, Ordell Flemming of St. Kitts/Nevis, Otev Lawrence of St. Lucia, Seon Thomas, Taje Commissiong and Teriq Highland of Barbados.

Akim Armstrong, Anthony Charles, Keron Bethelmy, Lester Joseph of St. Lucia and Maestro Mensah of Ghana will compete for starting roles in midfield while Dominic Douglas, Jameel Neptune, Jordan Devonish, veteran Kareem Joseph, Kordell Samuel and Guyana duo Amos Ramsay and Sheldon Holder are forward options for Latchoo, who will be assisted by former player/coach Abdallah Phillips.

“I have learned a lot under Jerry Moe as his understudy for the last couple years,” added Latchoo. “I will use [what I’ve learned] to help the game defensively but I want to see a little more flare in the build-up. We have changed the system to 4-3-3… before it was 4-4-2. The philosophy remains the same but the starting positions of the players now will be different.”

Last season Caledonia lifted the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield following a remarkable rise from the qualifiers to celebrate as champions of the knockout title.

Winning start for Latchoo as Caledonia whip Civic

Winning start for Latchoo as Caledonia whip Civic
ttproleague.com

Rajesh Latchoo got off to a winning start as Morvant Caledonia United’s head coach after he guided the “Eastern Stallions” to a 3-1 win at Point Fortin Civic on the opening night of the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League.

Jameel “Shooter” Neptune and new signing Jair Edwards—both from assists by returning attacker Kordell Samuel—and veteran Kareem Joseph each had a goal for the visitors at the Mahaica Oval, which, due to floodlights operation failure, forced match officials to abandon the first game of the double-header between Club Sando and last season’s runners-up San Juan Jabloteh four minutes into the second half.

However the lights—thanks to the arrival of a technician—were operational in time for the second game and it took Neptune just five minutes to give Caledonia a deserving 1-0 lead after meeting Samuel’s hard-worked right side cross to hit past a hapless goalkeeper Miles Goodman.

But Sylvester Teesdale pulled Civic level, 1-1, on the half hour mark when he converted from the penalty spot, beating his former Civic teammate, goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, after Akeem Redhead was sliced down in the box by Caledonia’s St. Lucian defender Otev Lawrence.

It was not until ten minutes inside the second half that Caledonia were back in front. Jair Edwards timed his jump perfectly to meet a cross from the left by Samuel to head past Goodman for a 2-1 lead while exposing Civic’s weakness in defence.

Edwards returned the favour in the 72th-minute but the 31-year-old well-travelled Samuel headed overbar. Samuel had represented North East Stars, Joe Public and Caledonia during 2005 to 2011 before plying his skill in the United States (Brooklyn Italians), Malaysia (Royal Malaysia Police Association FC), Thailand (Nakhonpathom United) and El Salvador (Pasaquina FC and Chalatenango).

Kareem Joseph, however, had extended Caledonia’s lead to 3-1 in the 66th-minute with a superb free kick when he guided the ball over the wall and into Goodman’s top corner from 22 yards out.

“I’m happy to start with a win,” said Latchoo after Caledonia’s win. “And I thank the players for that. Our players did what they had to do in the second half.”

Latchoo—the youngest head coach in the league at 33—who replaced longstanding coach Jerry Moe this season, continued, “I felt the first half wasn’t our best showing because our guys are better than [what we saw]. The score could have been better had things continue going to plan and not giving them (Civic) the fire they got when we gave them the penalty. But we took control in the second half and showed that we can play. We still have some things to tweak in our build-up and as our players go on, they will get a little more confident because we have some youngsters in the squad.”

Latchoo, who will next lead his side into action against St. Ann’s Rangers on Oct. 9, said he expects improvement from as early as his next training session.

Meanwhile new Point Fortin Civic coach Dick Furlonge believes his youthful side gave a good effort despite the result, but promised improvement.

“As we (Civic) move on you will see improvement in the team,” said the former Trinidad and Tobago international and Holland-based player during the late 60’s and early 70’s. “We have a young team. A lot of them are inexperienced [at this level]. We had opportunities to go ahead with the game but didn’t convert and that is what the game is about… if you throw away it will come back to haunt you. But I think the guys tried well and we will go from strength to strength.”

Kehinde Olakunie had an excellent opportunity to put Civic ahead in the 54th-minute after he was sent through one-on-one with goalkeeper Phillip, but the Nigerian-born forward was denied by the Trinidad and Tobago international at the near post.

Redhead also had attempt tamed by Phillip midway through the second half and in stoppage-time substitute Tereek Joseph failed to make contact to a Teesdale cross which flashed across Caledonia’s six-yard area.

Earlier, Jabloteh had led Club Sando 1-0 by the 14th-minute after teenaged left-back signing Keston Julien smashed a half volley into the back of goalkeeper Stefan Berkeley’s net. Brent Sam had beaten the Sando defence to a Tyrone Charles’ corner and the ball fell in favour of Julien just inside the area.

Jamaican defender Adrian Reid preserved Jabloteh’s lead before the break with a clearance off the line after goalkeeper Shemel Louison was beaten by an improvised lifted attempt by Jared London.

Jabloteh were back at it three minutes inside the second half when Keyon Edwards was denied by the upright. But soon afterwards the floodlights failed to operate and later plunged players and fans into darkness.

Rangers stun D/Force to post first opening win since 2011.
ttproleague.com.

St. Ann’s Rangers impressed with a winning start, for the first time since 2011, by defeating Defence Force 2-0 on Sunday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar in their opening Digicel Pro League 2016/17 match.

Coincidentally, Rangers are now back with Anthony Streete. He was the last coach to achieve such a feat when the St. Ann’s club edged Caledonia AIA, now known as Morvant Caledonia United, 2-1 at the start of the 2011-12 season but was later sacked with four games left and one spot off the bottom.

This time around, Sedale Mc Lean and new signing Dylon King both scored on opposite sides of the half from dead-ball situations on Sunday to earn Rangers – last season’s cellar-placed finishers – and Streete full three points against last season’s third-place league finishers and Digicel Pro Bowl winners Defence Force.

Mc Lean, wearing the captain’s armband, converted from the penalty spot in the 37th-minute to put Rangers 1-0 ahead after Devon Modeste was brought down inside the area by Marvin Jones.

Mc Lean, after a quick huddle with his teammates, got a little fancy by taking up his starting position at the edge of the box with his back towards Defence Force goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke. Then on the sound of referee Rashby Mc Phie’s whistle, Mc Lean turned and ran towards the spot before hitting down the centre to beat a wrong-sided Clarke.

King, who made his Pro League debut last season with Police FC, made it 2-0 for his new employers with his debut goal arriving on 55 minutes when his free-kick from 25 yards proved too hot for Clarke, who, at full stretch, got glove to the effort but couldn’t stop the midfielder’s strike from entering the goal. Rangers finally getting it right after three failed first half set-pieces including one from King in the 31st-minute which flew just wide of the upright.

King wasn’t the only new Rangers signing to star on the afternoon for the St. Ann’s club. Cleon John, a former San Juan Jabloteh and North East Stars first choice goalkeeper and a former Defence Force employee, was magnificent whenever called upon.

The overlooked Trinidad and Tobago international denied Devorn Jorsling twice in the first half and made a superb stop to keep out a half volley attempt by Army winger Jemel Sebro.

“Cleon brought his experience to the team. He is one of the leaders of the team and that’s why he is stamping his authority,” said Streete. “He is a good goalkeeper. He wants [the] playing time [he wasn’t getting at other teams] and that’s why he came at Rangers.

“But I [also] want to compliment him on his discipline. Since pre-season he start on the first day and never missed a session, and that is real seniority. I love him for his discipline… he motivates the whole team.”

Jorsling, the league’s all-time top scorer and ace Defence Force forward, did find the back of Rangers net but his celebration in the 75th-minute was cut short by the offside call while Sean Narcis’ 7th-minute effort which clipped the crossbar stood the closest to a goal for Army.

“When the attitude is poor and you are not willing to do the right things in a football match, it will always be difficult don’t matter the opponents,” Defence Force coach Marvin Gordon told ttproleague.com after the game. “I thought today my players’ attitude were poor, the energy level was poor, and the whole organisation of the team was poor. They never carried out the instructions that were given to them in the dressing room.”

Rangers were denied a third item by goalkeeper Clarke who matched a free-kick-rocket by Shakiyl Phillip with a one-handed save to put it overbar.

Clarke also made a double-save ten minutes from time—first denying substitute Marvin Lee and then the follow-up effort by Modeste, who, like Streete, makes his Rangers’ return from Club Sando.

Two-nil it stood at the end for Rangers. And it could have been a heavier defeat for Army had goalscorer Mc Lean hit the target twice more before the end.

Mc Lean struck wide of the far upright in the 77th-minute after stretching the Defence Force backline but was better in the last real attempt of the game when his effort whisked overbar.

“It was really a bad day at the office for us,” conceded Gordon, who plans to head back to the drawing board before coming back out “fighting again.”

Meanwhile Streete credited his support staff and players for the Rangers victory.

“Our technical staff all did a great job to get the team to this point today,” he said. “I am pleased because our players were on top of things in yesterday’s preparations for this game. And today our players were disciplined.”

Streete, who was forced to rebuild a squad on his return this season with a number of league newcomers, said the plan against Defence Force was to focus on three points in the opening game. And while he wants to focus on the season one game at a time, the Rangers coach added, “We are just trying not to come last this season.”

Rangers have finished bottom of the table in the last three seasons, each time under different coaches including new Club Sando coach Angus Eve, but Streete, who served the St. Ann’s club from 2006 till he was sacked in 2012, stands with the best points tally in a season with 34 points in 2008.

At the end of last season Streete was sacked at Club Sando after finishing the team in seventh position on their Pro League debut, prior to which he steered the club to runners-up then champions within consecutive seasons in the Super League—the second tier of Trinidad and Tobago club football.

Carlos Edwards, Jason Scotland, Jerrel Britto and Tinto among Ma Pau Stars
ttproleague.com

Head coach Ross Russell will unleash a galaxy of stars when Ma Pau Stars take the field for the first time this season in their opening 2016/17 Digicel Pro League match against Police FC on Tuesday from 6pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Also on Tuesday, the Port-of-Spain venue will also host the first El Clásico of the season when defending league champions Central FC—boasting former W Connection player Kenwyne Jones—will take on their bitter Couva rivals from 8pm.

But all eyes will first be on Ma Pau Stars in the opening fixture after pre-season signings by the Sangre Grande outfit include former Trinidad and Tobago internationals and 2006 World Cup players Carlos Edwards and Jason Scotland, 24-year-old former T&T youth star Jerrel Britto, and a return to the top level by fleet-footed winger Hayden Tinto.

Ma Pau Stars, formerly North East Stars, finished mid-table last season—one spot above sixth-place finishers Police—and newcomer Edwards says the aim is to win the league.

“We don’t want to just make up numbers,” said Edwards who occupied left-back, full-back and winger roles during his career. “We do have a good squad. We go with one aim and that’s to win the league.”

Edwards and striker Scotland, both 37-year-old former Defence Force players, are making their first return to the Pro League since 2000 and 2002, respectively, after lengthy spells in the United Kingdom.

Carlos had spells at Wrexham, Luton Town, Sunderland, Ipswich and Millwall—all of England—while Scotland represented Dundee United and St Johnstone in Scotland before moving to England where he went on to represent Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town and Barnsley. Scotland later returned to Scotland and represented Hamilton Academical and Stenhousemuir.

“It’s about time I came home and give back something,” added Edwards. “…and try to build and put the Pro League on the map. Also [I want] to help the younger guys emulate what I have experience over my career. And that’s one of the main reasons I’m here.”

Edwards, a father of three, described his experience in England as “absolutely beautiful”. “It was challenging at first but after a while you get used to it and knowing what it’s about. At the end of the day you put your head down and focus on the job.”

Edwards is pursuing his coaching badges in England but isn’t ready to make the switch just yet. “I feel fit but in football age is a main factor for teams. I think I have a couple more years. So after this season we will see how it goes.”

Collin Samuel, another T&T member at the 2006 World Cup, currently serves as player/coach at Ma Pau Stars. The 35-year-old former Dundee United attacker boasts a wealth of knowledge having also represented other Scottish clubs Falkirk, St Johnstone, Arbroath, East Fife and Sauchie.

Samuel, Edwards and Scotland will have around them the likes of ace poacher Kerry Baptiste, T&T 2006 World Cup member Anthony Wolfe, Tinto who has represented T&T at various age levels including the senior team and Britto who has returned to Trinidad following stints at Guatemala’s Deportivo Malacateco and Mexico’s Murciélagos.

Other Ma Pau Stars players include former T&T Youth World Cup goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel and Jamaican goalie Shane Mattis; veterans Glenton Wolfe and Keryn Navarro; Hakim Baird, Neil Mitchell, Neil G. Mitchell, Kerry Daniel, Adrian Noel, former T&T Youth World Cup midfield teammates Jean-Luc Rochford and Chike Sullivan, Quincy Charles, Taryk Sampson and newcomers Elton John, Kareem Eastman and Sayid Freitas.

Have to admire Civic for keeping the ground in good condition. Pity they don't play international ?national games there as before. I remember long ago there was a bigger stand. Maybe they could invest  in a new main stand. Do they still play cricket at Mahaica. I remembered a turf wicket there.

Five-star Police run riot on Ma Pau; Central edge W Connection
ttproleague.com

Stars? Who? Todd Ryan scored twice to lead Police FC to a comprehensive 5-1 come-from-behind hammering of Ma Pau Stars on Tuesday in their opening match of the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League.

New signing Jerrel Britto opened the scoring in the 12th minute and looked to have set the star-studded Ma Pau—boasting the likes of Carlos Edwards and Jason Scotland among others—on course for victory in the opening game of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

However Police veteran midfielder and skipper, Ryan, fired back with a double in a space of three minutes to pace Police, who got further goals from Jameel Perry, Christon Thomas and substitute Keon Wilson, to start at the top of the league standings this season.

Two-time defending champions Central FC, in the second game of the double-header, got off to a winning start by edging bitter Couva rivals W Connection 2-1 courtesy midfielder Leston Paul’s stoppage-time winner.

Darren Mitchell, donning the captain’s armband, fired the Couva Sharks 1-0 ahead four minutes from the half. Forward Marcus Joseph enjoyed child’s play against Connection defender Alvin Jones before picking out Mitchell who beat a hapless goalkeeper Terrence Lewis from the centre of the area.

It was not until the 84th minute that the somewhat scrappy affair—as Central and Connection seemed unable to shake off last week’s away defeats in the Concacaf Champions League against Vancouver Whitecaps (4-1) and Honduras Progreso (1-0), respectively—produced another goal.

Connection substitute forward Jamal Charles completed a sublime move by the Savonetta Boys, involving a neat flick into the area and headed assist by substitute Aikim Andrews and Andre Toussaint, respectively, with a goal. The Grenada international headed over an advancing goalkeeper Javon Sample to level the scores at 1-1.

But in the third of four minutes stoppage-time Leston Paul grabbed the 2-1 winner. Paul ran unchallenged for almost 15 yards before hitting to the left of Lewis and into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after Joseph had attracted the attention of a handful of Connection players on the right before finding Paul in the middle.

Elsewhere, last season’s league runners-up San Juan Jabloteh secured a 1-0 win over Club Sando after no goals were scored during the remaining 42 minutes of last week’s abandoned match—due to no lights—which was completed on Tuesday at the same Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

The solitary item was produced in the 14th minute of play last Friday by Jabloteh’s explosive left-back signing, teenager Keston Julien.

However there wasn’t a shortage of goals in north Trinidad thanks to a brilliant showing by the Richard Hood coached-Police FC without ace scorer Makesi Lewis, broken leg, and first choice goalkeeper Adrian Foncette currently with the Trinidad and Tobago national team for Caribbean Cup qualifiers.

Despite going under early on after Jerrel Britto’s superb strike found the far bottom corner of goalkeeper Theon Browne’s net, the Lawmen were on fire against Ma Pau Stars.

Todd Ryan smashed in the equaliser (1-1) in the 22nd minute from close range after a poorly executed clearance off a Police corner put Stars’ goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel in danger. Samuel, who was lucky not to concede less than 15 seconds into the contest after smashing a clearance attempt into Police forward Jameel Perry near the goalmouth, wasn’t as fortunate after he was only able to clear the high ball as far as Ryan who welcomed the opportunity with venom.

Ma Pau’s trouble doubled by the 24th-minute when Ryan converted from the spot to give Police a 2-1 advantage after Perry was brought down inside the area by defender Glenton Wolfe.

Perry, who failed to produce the goods earlier from two right side Kareem Freitas crosses, redeemed himself in the 38th minute by hitting past Samuel from another Freitas feed for a 3-1 Police lead.

Four minutes into the second half and Police were leading 4-1 when midfielder Christon Thomas unleashed a right-footer past Samuel.

And suddenly there was no coming back for Ma Pau whose closest to a second item arrived in the 82nd minute when Hakim Baird’s free kick—one resembling that of Ronaldinho’s infamous 2002 World Cup goal against England—deceived goalkeeper Brown and clipped the top of the Police crossbar.

Kerry Daniel, who was released on the left by substitute Scotland, had the best open play effort for Ma Pau seven minutes from the half, hitting just wide of the far bottom corner after seeing off a challenge by Ryan inside the area.

But it was finally over for Ma Pau after substitute Keon Wilson rounded off the 5-1 Police win in the 89th minute. Wilson executed a cool finish beyond Samuel off a feed by substitute Micah Lewis, who, nine minutes earlier watched on as his effort was miraculously kept out at the goalmouth by Ma Pau’s Keryn Navarro.

Police will return to play on Tuesday October 11 against W Connection while Ma Pau Stars will try to rebound at Point Fortin Civic on Friday October 7. (See full upcoming schedule below.)
