Central eyes three more points at Sando
ttproleague.com

Two-time defending champions Central FC wants to stay perfect after Tuesday’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Couva rivals W Connection at the start of their 2016/17 Digicel Pro League campaign.

Leston Paul grabbed the Central winner at the death in stoppage-time after Connection’s Grenada international and substitute forward Jamal Charles’ late strike had nullified the Couva Sharks’ first half lead through midfielder and captain Darren Mitchell.

“It was an all-round team effort – everyone did their part,” said Paul, who preferred not to shoulder the full credit after scoring the winner. “We needed to start well because we want to retain our title.”

Central are next against Club Sando from 5pm on Friday at the Mahaica Oval followed by home side Point Fortin Civic against Ma Pau Stars from 7:30pm.

“It’s very important that we also get full points against Club Sando in our next game,” continued the Central FC midfielder. “It won’t be an easier game against Sando. We are treating every game as a final with the season shorter—just two rounds. So for any team, once you get a good start you can go on to win the league.”

Like Sando, Civic and Ma Pau are all hoping to rebound from opening defeats to their 2016/17 league campaign.

Sando were edged 1-0 by last season’s runners-up San Juan Jabloteh, who will host Defence Force from 6pm on Sunday at the Barataria Recreation Ground following a 4pm kick off between St. Ann’s Rangers and Morvant Caledonia United at the same venue.

Rangers and Morvant Caledonia are both coming off opening wins against Defence Force, 2-0, and Civic, 3-1, respectively.

Meanwhile Ma Pau, although boasting a star-studded roster inclusive of Jason Scotland and Carlos Edwards, suffered the heaviest defeat of the opening slate of matches, falling 5-1 to Police FC after opening the scoring.

Todd Ryan scored a brace for the Lawmen and Jameel Perry, Christon Thomas and substitute Keion Wilson each had a goal for Police, who will next tackle W Connection from 6pm on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

“It was a fantastic result… fantastic performance by our players,” said Police FC head coach Richard Hood. “It was more than I expected because we are never one hundred percent sure of what we are going to get from your players. North East Stars were a good team attacking team on the night but they were susceptible on the counter attacks.

“We have the capability of being champions. This is something we have always been saying to our players. It’s just for our players to realise this and have the belief.”

Hood, though, is bracing for a tougher challenge against Connection—a side he has never defeated since taking over as Police coach.

“Connection are always a difficult team and we have never beaten them since I am coach [of Police],” added Hood, now in his fifth season as coach of the Lawmen. “We will try and improve on the good things such as our mobility and surprise [showing] by Perry and Kareem Freitas who I thought was outstanding. But we are also mindful that we have to correct some things at the back.”

With this season shorted to just two rounds—between September 2016 and February 2017—to facilitate reverting to the old April to December format in 2017, Leston Paul believes the race for the 2016/17 will be tougher.

“Every team would come out to play [harder] this season because of the fact that it is a shorter season,” said the Central FC player and former Trinidad and Tobago Youth World Cup captain. “Every team knows once you get a good start you can go on to win the league. No team can be underestimated this season. We saw Police beat Ma Pau 5-1 and Rangers surprising with a win against Defence Force in their first game.”

Mitchell fires Central to the top; Jason Scotland gets off the mark for Ma Pau.
ttproleague.com.

Darren Mitchell built on his opening performance by scoring twice to lift two-time defending champions Central FC to a 2-1 comeback win over Club Sando in their second Digicel Pro League game of the season on Friday night.

The victory pushed Central (2-0-0, 6 points) three spots up to occupy top of the 2016/17 standings – a position previously held by Police FC, who plays W Connection on Wednesday in their second league game of the season.

Mitchell—who scored the opener in a 2-1 win over rivals W Connection last Tuesday—first pulled the Couva Sharks level just before the hour mark, then snatched the winner in the final minute of regulation time to earn Central full points while taking his tally to 3 goals from two league outings.

Kemuel Rivers had fired Sando ahead a minute into the second half of the first game of a double-header at the Mahaica Oval with a delightful 22-yard free kick that beat the jump of the wall then goalkeeper Javon Sample for a 1-0 lead.

The Angus Eve coached-Sando came close to another item in the 56th minute when midfielder Akeem Humphrey, who headed wide after ten minutes on the best opportunity of the first half thanks to a well-placed Akeem Roach cross, hit across the face of goal.

Central, coached by Dale Saunders, responded well and in the 59th minute Mitchell made it 1-1 beating goalkeeper Stefan Berkeley off a feed from Marcus Joseph.

Sando were unlucky not to win a penalty a minute later when an effort from Jamaican midfielder Keithy Simpson struck the arm of Central substitute Kevon Villaroel.

And in the 66th minute following a foul on Kevon Piper by defender Andre Ettienne, Humphrey had another free kick from a similar position but the Sando captain struck overbar.

However disaster struck in the 90th minute for Sando—hoping to bounce back after an opening 1-0 loss against San Juan Jabloteh—when Mitchell swooped in at the goalmouth to knock the ball over the line for a 2-1 win after taking advantage on a fumble by Berkeley, who was troubled by an effort by Leston Paul.

It was a disappointing end for Berkeley, who, moments earlier, had made a double save denying a strike from Nathaniel Garcia then the follow-up effort from substitute Johan Peltier.

Point Fortin Civic, in the second game of the double-header, suffered their second defeat in as many matches after falling 2-0 against the visiting Ma Pau Stars.

Elton John opened the scoring from a free kick and former English Premier League forward Jason Scotland, in his second game back in the Pro League since 2002, completed the two-goal win on the second bite of a penalty as Ma Pau rebounded from a 5-1 opening loss against Police to rise from bottom of the standings to sixth.

Civic looked a slightly improved bunch following last week’s 3-1 defeat against Morvant Caledonia United at the same venue but fell behind at half hour when a 30-yard John free kick bounced freely beyond goalkeeper Miles Goodman after the intended target of three Ma Pau shirts including Trinidad and Tobago World Cup 2006 members Scotland and Anthony Wolfe all failed to make contact.

Little fault of Goodman, arguably the best Civic performer on the night, who had saves against another T&T World Cup 2006 member and former England Premier League full-back Carlos Edwards, Jerrel Britto and Wolfe.

Goodman also did well to keep out Scotland’s initial penalty strike in the 69th minute after Wolfe was brought down by Shevon Abraham but the Civic shot-stopper was beaten by veteran forward’s follow-up as Ma Pau celebrated a 2-0 cushion.

Civic suffered an early blow when pre-season signing Kehinde Adeshigin was brought down by a cruel tackle by Adrian Noel which tore the Nigerian forward’s sock at the ankle. Adeshigbin, a 6-foot-plus forward with excellent movement, failed to continue beyond the 43rd minute and had rushed off to hospital with a suspected fracture.

Adeshigbin’s replacement, Jamille Boatswain, had a couple looks at goal in the second half with his best forcing a save out of goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel who pushed the attempt onto the upright and out for a corner in the 79th minute.

But the best chance of pulling one back for the home side was offered to Sylvester Teesdale from the penalty spot after a handball in the box against Noel six minutes from the end. However Teesdale was denied ‘keeper Samuel who also denied the veteran forward on the follow up.

Late penalty lifts D/Force over 10-man Jabloteh; Rangers hold Caledonia as both sides see red.
ttproleague.com.

The Barataria Recreation Ground produced three red cards, two penalties, a penalty-kick flop, a revenge win, and shared points – all in the Digicel Pro League’s “SunFunDay” when professional football action returned for the first time this season to the north venue on Sunday.

Last season’s table-propping St. Ann’s Rangers and Morvant Caledonia United first played to a 1-1 draw—after both sides were reduced to 10 men—to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2016/17 season before Defence Force grabbed their first league win this term after two attempts with a 2-1 result over 10-man home side and last season’s runners-up San Juan Jabloteh.

Morvant Caledonia and Rangers, each with a 1-1-0 record and 4 points, both moved up a spot to occupy second and third positions, respectively, on the league standings currently led by two-time defending champions Central FC (2-0-0, 6 points). Meanwhile, in descending order, dormant Police FC (1-0-0, 3 points), who must tackle W Connection from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday in their second game of the season, Jabloteh and Defence Force, both with a 1-0-1 record and 3 points, occupy fourth, fifth and six positions respectively, with the latter jumping three spots.

Jameel “Shooter” Neptune gave Morvant Caledonia—coming off a 3-1 win at Point Fortin Civic—a 1-0 lead three minutes before the break when he struck low past an advancing goalkeeper Cleon John following a quick exchange with Akim Armstrong to get beyond the Rangers backline.

However the lightening-paced Neptune, along with Rangers captain Shakiyl Phillip, both saw red just beyond the hour mark for violent conduct that led to a brawl which was quelled by the quick action of referee Keilon Bacchus and his assistants Caleb Wales and Kevin Charles.

By then the score had already been levelled at 1-1.

Rangers’ pre-season defensive acquisition Devon Drayton had blasted into the roof of Morvant Caledonia goalkeeper Stephon Seepersad’s net from close range after meeting a lofted Kordell Samuel pass inside the area in the 48th minute.

Rangers, following a Morvant Caledonia handball in the area, had an excellent opportunity to take the lead in the 71st minute against a side that had also rocked their crossbar from a Kareem Joseph free kick midway through the first half. But Sedale Mc Lean audaciously tried to duplicate a penalty he converted in a 2-0 win over Defence Force a week ago by starting his run-up at the top of the box with his back facing the goal. This time Mc Lean’s end result only offered for a routine save by goalkeeper Seepersad, who kept out the effort at his left.

Then in stoppage-time Rangers frontman Devon Modeste spilled wide with Seepersad at his mercy following a surging run down the left by full-back Kareem Baptiste to set up the veteran attacker, who had earlier been denied by the legs of the Morvant Caledonia ‘keeper.

In the second game, Devorn Jorsling converted a late penalty as Defence Force exacted revenge over Jabloteh, who had defeated the Army/Coast Guard combination by the same 2-1 score last season when both sides met for the first and only other time at the Barataria venue.

Jabloteh’s captain, Damian Williams, was given his marching orders by referee Crystal Sobers, who issued the Jamaican a direct red card for dissent during his protest, arguing that the handball ruled against Aquil Selby occurred outside the area.

However it was business as usual for league’s all-time top scorer, Jorsling, who slotted the ball into the right bottom corner of goalkeeper Shemel Louison’s net with two minutes of regular time left.

Louison, who had picked the wrong corner, was first beaten in the 22nd minute when Defence Force midfielder and captain Jerwyn Balthazar executed a glancing header off a Kerry Joseph free kick to put Defence Force ahead 1-0 after Jorsling was barged to the ground outside the left of the area.

Defence Force surrendered the lead in the 75th minute when Trinidad and Tobago international Willis Plaza, who was denied on either side of the break by Defence Force goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke, grabbed the equaliser (1-1) with a powerful header after towering the Army defence to meet a right side Jevon Morris cross.

And after Jorsling’s item from the spot, Jabloteh substitute forward Jamal Gay thought he had earned his side another equaliser after knocking in a spill by goalkeeper Clarke in stoppage-time, but, instead, an infringement on the ‘keeper was ruled against the frontman.

Debutant Daniel Diaz rescues Connection to a 2-2 draw against Police
ttproleague.com

Substitute Daniel Diaz marked his W Connection debut with a spectacular volley to earn the Savonetta Boys a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Police FC in Digicel Pro League action at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old Diaz—with his first professional touch of the ball and only one minute onto the field after replacing Anselm Jackson in the 61st minute—smashed a right-footed volley into the Police net to level the scores at 2-2.

It was the second time on the night that Police, 5-1 winners over Ma Pau Stars in their opening game a week ago, allowed the advantage to slip after taking the lead twice through forward Keion Wilson and an own goal credited to Connection full-back Kurt Frederick.

Wilson headed the Lawmen 1-0 in front on 21 minutes for his second goal in as many matches this season when he beat Connection second choice goalkeeper Terrence Lewis off a Kadeem Riley cross.

However midfielder Kevon Goddard pulled Connection level at 1-1 eight minutes later with Police ‘keeper Theon Browne hung out to dry after Andre Toussaint won back the ball in contest with defender Elijah Belgrave at the right top corner of the six-yard box. Toussaint then served up a juicy offer for an onrushing Goddard, who made no mistake in beating a hapless Browne from the middle of the penalty area.

Browne, occupying the position between the sticks in absence of first choice ‘keeper Adrian Foncette currently on international duty with the Trinidad and Tobago national team, had made a double-save early on to deny Connection and Grenada international forward Jamal Charles.

Browne also defied gravity in the 20th minute to push over a headed attempt by Connection pre-season forward signing Shackiel Henry, who, moments earlier, was denied by the base of the upright after smashing in a low drive from the top of the box.

Connection, however, fell behind again on 49 minutes when Frederick headed past his own goalkeeper Lewis in an attempt to clear a dangerous right side corner whipped in by Police pre-season left-back acquisition Nequan Caruth. Police led 2-1.

But from what turned out a masterstroke Connection coach Stuart Charles Fevrier and his technical staff to summon Diaz, and a touch of brilliance by for former Siparia Spurs midfielder, Connection were level again at 2-2.

Diaz hammered his perfectly timed volley into the Police net from just inside the area with Browne stranded outside the six yard area after attacking a dangerous Frederick following a flowing move by Connection. Browne’s punch, however, only put the ball as far as an enthusiastic Diaz.

“We wanted to give him an opportunity because he has been working well in training,” said W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean after the game. “It was a matter of ‘let’s see what he have’.”

Diaz failed to add another in the 77th minute when he skied the ball overbar on a less difficult offer from Toussaint. And four minutes from time Connection’s Dominican midfielder Briel Thomas squandered a chance at the back post after he was picked out by substitute Shaquille Bertrand.

Diaz was among a handful of newcomers this season including Bertrand and Shaquille John as Connection stood without a total of six regulars; defender Daneil Cyrus (Trinidad and Tobago national team), goalkeeper Julani Archibald and defensive midfielder Gerard Williams (St Kitts/Nevis national team) and Dimitrie Apai (Suriname) due to Caribbean Gold Gup qualifiers while Hughtun Hector (heel) and Alvin Jones (on trial at Toronto FC) were unavailable.

Jean said the plan is to develop the young players within this season’s shortened calendar with the view of preparing for next season as the club expects moves by a number of players.

Pleased with a point, Connection’s first after two attempts, Jean said it was a good contest by both teams. He added that Police, a team with a good fighting spirit, have been improving over the years under coach Richard Hood.

Hood also settled with a point saying it was a fair result based on the balance of play. But the Police coach expressed dissatisfaction over his side’s failure to protect the lead twice.

“I was disappointed really,” Hood said. “…particularly the first goal. The second goal was a bit unlucky on the goalkeeper’s part. I thought he (Browne) had a really good game for us and I am happy about that. But disappointing that we gave away the lead on two occasions.

“They (Connection) played well but we didn’t play our game, particularly in the first half. We were a bit slow in closing them down; allowing them time and space with the ball. And of course they are quality players and they will hurt you once given that space and time.”

Hood said after the half time talk his side, who were without a few key players including last season's league leading goalscorer Makesi Lewis who is out for the season with a broken leg, showed improvement in their energy and aggression.

Police, like Connection, were left ruing missed chances, especially after substitute Joshua Leach failed to meet a low Kareem Freitas’ cross whipped across the face of the Connection goal with a minute left.

Meanwhile Police midfielder and captain Todd Ryan—arguably the hardest working player for the Blues—would consider himself unlucky not to add to a double he scored against Ma Pau after he was denied twice—a rocket in the 22nd minute and a 68th minute volley after controlling the ball off his chest—by Connection shot-stopper Lewis.

Nonetheless Police remains unbeaten after two matches and are now second behind leaders and two-time defending champions Central (6 points) on the 2016/17 standings and tied on four points with, in descending order, Morvant Caledonia United and St. Ann’s Rangers. While Connection, who were edged 2-1 by rivals Central last week, remains eight with one point and only ahead of bottom positioned Club Sando and Point Fortin Civic.

Connection returns to play on Friday against Club Sando at the Ato Boldon Stadium while Police will take on Point Fortin Civic at the same venue next Tuesday.

Central and Connection seek confidence booster ahead of final CCL fixture

Central and Connection seek confidence booster ahead of final CONCACAF Champions League fixture
ttproleague.com

With both teams already failing to make the next step in the 2016/17 Concacaf Champions League (CCL), Caribbean powerhouses Central FC and W Connection chase pride in their final group game of the CCL next week.

Two-time reigning Caribbean Club champions Central FC will be away to Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 19 at the Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, while Connection must travel to Mexico against Pumas UNAM on Oct. 20 at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario in Mexico City.

But first, Central and Connection are after domestic wins in the Digicel Pro League (DPL) before flying off for their final CCL fixture.

W Connection, with just one point after two league games, will play Club Sando on Friday from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium, following which, Central, also the two-time reigning DPL champions and current 2016/17 leaders, will look to continue on their one hundred percent form after two games when they tackle Defence Force from 8pm at the Couva venue.

“We are on top in the Pro League and we want to continue with a win against Army (Defence Force),” said Central FC head coach Dale Saunders who has already led the Couva Sharks to wins over W Connection (2-1) and Club Sando (2-1).

“We want to leave to go Kansas on a high because we want to finish on a positive result [in the CCL]. But first we have to focus on Army. We knew that with the shorter [DPL] season for 2016/17 it was important to start strong if we are to defend our title. So we are focusing game by game to try and stay positive in our results.”

Connection meanwhile, are after their first win domestically and are coming of a 2-2 draw with Police FC last Tuesday.

“We want a victory [against Sando],” said Connection assistant coach Earl Jean, whose side sit third from the bottom on the DPL standings after two games. “We want the confidence going into the Concacaf game and we want to build for the season [domestically].

“The league is young still but with just two rounds we must give everything possible to try and get maximum points. We don’t want to stay too far from the [leading] pack.”

Jean said it is also important for the Savonetta Boys to win their final CCL game next week against Pumas. “The most important thing is to win the game. We don’t want to go out there to lay down—we want a good result.”

Competing out of season against teams CCL teams well into their respective domestic seasons, Central and Connection felt at a disadvantage and currently occupy bottom of Groups C and A, respectively, at the Concacaf tournament which kicks off in August.

But with the Pro League season shortened in 2016/17 (September 2016 to February 2017) to allow reverting the calendar to the April to December format in 2017, Trinidadian teams competing at next season’s CCL, once qualified, will be deep into their domestic season.

Vancouver Whitecaps (4W-0D-0L, 12), of the Major League Soccer (MLS), have long secured their place in the quarterfinals of this season’s CCL out of Group C with Sporting Kansas City and Central, both with a 0W-1D-2L record, left to try and salvage some pride.

Meanwhile in Group A, second positioned Pumas (2W-0D-1L, 6 points) are hoping to hurdle leaders Honduras Progreso (2W-1D-1L, 7 points) with a win or draw over Connection (0W-1D-2L, 1 point) to snatch a place into the quarterfinals of the CCL.

Coach Russell: Stars fitting in well with Ma Pau

Coach Russell: Stars fitting in well with Ma Pau
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

ROSS RUSSELL, coach of Ma Pau Stars (formerly North East Stars), has commended the new players on his team, namely ex-Trinidad and Tobago internationals Carlos Edwards, Jason Scotland and Hayden Tinto, as well as Jerrel Britto, for the way they have integrated themselves in the club’s set-up.

Speaking during a telephone interview recently, Russell mentioned, “so far, I think, they have fitted in well. They are now coming to play the type of football that I like to play.” Asked what style he favours, the ex-Defence Force and Central FC tactician replied, “the players wouldn’t be that quick but I like to play a lot of ball-possession. I like to play attacking football. All the players (mentioned) are more attacking-minded players.” Last Tuesday, Ma Pau Stars were trounced 5-1 by Police in their Digicel Pro League Round One Match Day One contest at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. But, three days later, they responded with a 2-0 win over Point Fortin Civic FC at the Mahaica Oval, Point Fortin.

“From a scale of 1 to 100, I think it was about 65 percent,” was how Russell rated Friday’s performance.

“We are now gelling really, because we have a lot of new players.

The old ones are now gelling with the new ones. It was a good performance, a good win for the team, a booster coming after that large defeat against Police. I think it (boosted) their confidence a little bit and gave them a little more trust in what we’re doing.” Some of the experienced players from last season includes the Wolfe brothers, captain Anthony and Glenton, as well as Kerry Baptiste and goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel.

Asked about the blend between the new and regular members, Russell replied, “training will bring all the meshing but I think they’ve (blended) in well. They are a nice core of players, they’re a good group together because, seeing off the field and on the field, they talk football and lime a lot.

“The season is still early,” he continued. “I think we’ll do well this season, with the type of players (we have). It’s just to keep them well, keep them healthy, keep them focused. All of them are mostly experienced players, who have been around the national team, in-and-out. I think experience will bring it all (together). It’s just to keep them fit and focused.” Are the experienced players working with the younger brigade, especially the lesser divisions? Russell responded, “right now, Glenton Wolfe is coaching one of the youth teams (Under-14s) since last year. He stepped up and (went) to coach. Jason will be doing that as soon as the Reserve League starts, because right now he’s a player/coach with me. He’s put his foot into that already.

“The rest of players, I’ll see where they head. You can’t really force a player to coach. They have to make the first step,” he ended.

Marcus Joseph nets double as Central record third straight win

Marcus Joseph nets double as Central record third straight win
ttproleague.com

Marcus Joseph scored twice and set up another as two-time defending Digicel Pro League champions Central FC hammered Defence Force 4-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Friday night to record their third straight win in as many league games this season.

Conversely, in the earlier game of the Couva double-header, rivals W Connection registered their first league win after three attempts this season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Club Sando, and are now five points adrift of leaders Central in fifth but tied on four points with, in descending order, Police, Morvant Caledonia United and St. Ann’s Rangers.

It was the dosage of confidence booster both Central and Connection were seeking ahead of their final, but insignificant, Concacaf Champions League 2016/17 group stage fixture next week against opponents of the United States’ Major League Soccer (Sporting Kansas City) and Mexico (Pumas UNAM), respectively.

Kemuel Rivers handed Sando the lead on 36 minutes against his ex-employers, beating goalkeeper Julani Archibald from the penalty spot after a handball was given against Connection captain Gerard Williams. But the southerners, like in the previous game were they lost 2-1 against Central, failed to protect the early lead while goalscorer Rivers was unable to continue beyond 30 seconds into the second half after pulling out injured.

Connection were level five minutes after the break when forward Shackiel Henry smashed a right-footer beyond the outstretched right arm of goalkeeper Kelvin Henry for his first Savonetta Boys goal since joining the club from Point Fortin Civic ahead of the season.

Sando then gave it completely away after allowing Connection’s Grenada international forward Jamal Charles to run unchallenged for almost 70 yards down the middle on a counter attack, before smashing a right-footed strike beyond goalkeeper Henry and into the back of the net for his second league goal this season.

Connection’s St. Kitts/Nevis international goalkeeper Archibald, who along with international teammate Gerard Williams returned to the starting line-up following international duty in Gold Cup qualifiers, later preserved his side’s lead with an all-important save two minutes from time to deny Akeem Roach, who had two earlier near misses for Sando.

However it was business as usual for the DPL leaders Central, coming off league wins against W Connection and Sando.

Joseph fired the Couva Sharks ahead on 13 minutes, hitting off the base of the upright to score past goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke after controlling off his chest a classy outside-the-boot feed over the top by midfielder Sean De Silva.

Jason Marcano then gave Central a 2-0 cushion two minutes from the half with a scorcher from the right side. Marcano’s strike was unmatched by Clarke after the winger controlled off his chest, a deep cross from the left by Joseph, before having an early go at goal beyond left-back Aklie Edwards.

Substitute Hashim Arcia reduced the Defence Force deficit 1-2 eleven minutes into the second half, hitting low past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams after linking-up with Devorn Jorsling inside the area.

But it wasn’t the same fighting performance that saw the Army push this season’s curtaining-raising Digicel Charity Shield into a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw last September, although losing on kicks against Central.

Defence Force found themselves deeper in trouble when Marcus Joseph completed his double from the penalty spot for a 3-1 Central lead after he was brought down in the area by defender Rodell Elcock on the hour mark.

Central midfielder and captain Darren Mitchell, off a feed from Keston George following an entertaining team move, then rounded off the scoring in stoppage-time for the 4-1 win with a composed finish past Clarke, who had moments before denied Marcano a second. Mitchell, with 5 goals from four games in all domestic competitions, has scored in every league game for the Couva Sharks, including the Charity Shield which Central defended.

Sean Narcis had struck high and wide with the Central goal at his mercy on the half hour mark in what could have affected the course of the game. The veteran midfielder got closer in the second half with a headed attempt put over by ‘keeper Williams and a volleyed attempt overbar, but goals mattered at the final whistle and Central had more of it.

To grandma with love; Willis Plaza steals Morvant mega show
ttproleague.com

Willis Plaza bagged a double and was involved in another two goals as San Juan Jabloteh sent Morvant Caledonia United skidding to a 4-2 defeat on their home debut at the Morvant Recreation Ground which attracted over 2,500 spectators by many estimates on Sunday.

Plaza, who said he is always self-motivated to perform, “crowd or no crowd”, later dedicated his match-winning performance to his grandmother Florentine Cipriani, girlfriend Kareena Rose, and cousin Elizabeth Plaza, who all celebrated their birthday on Sunday.

The win hurdled the Keith Jeffrey coached-Jabloteh (6 points) up four spots to occupy second position behind Digicel Pro League leaders and two-time defending champions Central FC (9 points), while Morvant Caledonia, dropping two spots into fifth, remain tied on 4 points with Police FC, St. Ann’s Rangers and W Connection.

But the 29-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international forward, Plaza, who was surprised by the turnout of spectators, felt he should have had more goals to his name before being substituted with four minutes left.

“I feel a bit disappointed because I had more chances I could have put away,” said Plaza, whose career landed him stints in Vietnam, Belgium and El Salvador. “But this was a big surprise to see the amount of people coming out to support the Pro League.”

Supporters included the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Darryl Smith, Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant, Adrian Leonce, Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee president, Brian Lewis, Ephraim Serrette, president of the National Association of Athletics Administration, and councillor for the area Franz “Delamo” Lambkin.

Impressed by the turnout, Lambkin said, “It’s the first time I have ever seen an event like this attract such magnitude of people in Morvant. This is what the community needs—something to distract the young people from the negatives.”

Plaza silenced the thousands—mostly made up of home supporters— surrounding the Park Street venue with the quickest goal of the season, beating national teammate and goalkeeper Marvin Phillip with a right-footed laser after just one minute and 16 seconds following a release down the right by Noel Williams and slipping beyond defender Taje Commissiong.

Jamaican defender Adrian Reid then cushioned the visitors 2-0 on 42 minutes from the penalty spot after referee Keon Yorke ruled that defender Otev Lawrence had brought down Plaza in the area.

Tyrone Charles joined in on the fun, netting against his former employers in the 45th minute for a comfortable 3-0 lead. Phillip was hung out to dry by his defence when Charles had a free run at goal after Plaza headed-on a deep pass from the back by Reid.

Morvant Caledonia, without key attacker Jameel Neptune who was red carded against Rangers, did however pull a goal back in stoppage-time of the first half through Morvant resident Kareem Joseph from the penalty spot—reducing the deficit 1-3 before the break—after Tobago referee Yorke ruled that goalkeeper Shemel Louison had brought down forward Kordell Samuel just inside the area.

Louison, a Grenada international goalie, and a handful of his teammates protested to the officials that Samuel was impeded outside the area, but Yorke stood with his decision in pointing to the spot.

However Plaza restored Jabloteh’s three-goal cushion on the hour mark for a 4-1 score by chipping goalkeeper Phillip, who had moments earlier made two separate saves to deny Plaza and Kion Joseph. But the ‘Soca Warriors” ‘keeper was hung out to dry once more after Plaza broke the backline to score his third league goal in as many matches this season as Jabloteh dominated despite being without suspended captain Damian Williams (red card) and injury listed Keyon Edwards, Kennedy Hinkson and Nathan Lewis.

Akim Armstrong pulled back another goal for the home side in the 73rd minute for a 4-2 score after climbing in the Jabloteh area to head past Louison off a Kareem Joseph cross. But it wasn’t enough against the visitors who weathered the wet surface better following earlier rainfall.

“Our defence let us down today,” said Morvant Caledonia head coach Rajesh Latchoo after his third game in charge since being promoted at the helm in pre-season. “If we didn’t make those mistakes we would have won. But today individual mistakes let us down. At this level you can’t allow mistakes because you will be punished. The guys had no better reason to perform [their best] today because the support was very good.”

Armstrong concurred.

“It’s the best feeling as a footballer, to come home and feel this love and support,” said the resident and Morvant Caledonia captain. “The support was tremendous and it’s more disappointing that we were unable to reward the turnout with a win, being such a good crowd.”

By the look of things, the Park Street venue in Morvant, which became available through the invaluable support of the Ministry of Sport, the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago through its facilities manager Anthony Blake, and the local corporation, has surpassed the Pro League games’ attendance witnessed at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin (home of Point Fortin Civic) and the Barataria Recreation Ground (home of San Juan Jabloteh), and may have also outdone yesteryear attendances at Guaguayare Secondary School Ground (home of Super League side Guaya United).

“This (Morvant) is the home of football passionate people,” said resident and Defence Force veteran forward, Devorn Jorsling, who came out in support at the Morvant Recreation Ground. “And the crowd will be even bigger when we (Defence Force) play here against Morvant Caledonia.”

Morvant Caledonia will next return to the Park Street venue on November 6 when they host Defence Force, but must first lock horns with Central FC and Club Sando in away fixtures.

While Jabloteh’s next three league fixtures are against Ma Pau Stars, Police FC and Point Fortin Civic.

Stars shoot Ma Pau into third; Police held by Civic
ttproleague.com

Point Fortin Civic withstood Police FC’s second-half assault to earn their first point after opening the new campaign with back-to-back defeats.

The table-propping Civic had looked set for their first win of the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League term under new coach Dick Furlonge after a quick-fire double by striker Jamille Boatswain in the second game of a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday night.

But the Lawmen pulled the scores level through substitutes Joshua Leach and Kaaron Foster.

However, despite dominating the second half and twice rattling the Civic crossbar in the late moments, Police failed to find the winner.

The result saw Police (5 points) slip one spot into fourth after three games, while Ma Pau Stars (6 points) moved four spots up into third and tied on points with second positioned San Juan Jabloteh after a comfortable 3-0 win over 10-man St. Ann’s Rangers in the earlier game at the Couva venue.

Two-time defending DPL champions, Central FC (9 points), leads the standings, and, like W Connection must compete in their final Concacaf Champions League fixture this week before refocussing on their domestic ambitions.

Anthony Wolfe, Jason Scotland and substitute Kerry Baptiste all found the back of the net for the Ma Pau Stars, with Carlos Edwards playing a pivotal role in each item.

Wolfe acrobatically fired Ma Pau (1-0) ahead with an overhead kick on 16 minutes after controlling off his chest a floated Edwards’ free-kick ahead of former Stars goalie, Cleon John.

Scotland, who, like Edwards, recently returned to the Pro League after spending more than a decade abroad, made it 2-0 on the half hour mark. Scotland folded back the years when turned defender Devon Drayton before letting off a left-footed strike beyond John and into the far netting following a throw-in by Edwards.

Rangers’ troubles tripled six minutes into the second half when referee Kevin Smart—who later handed over outfield duties to fourth official Dennis Changiah—awarded forward Devon Modeste a direct red card for a foul on Kareem Eastman.

Changiah later became the focus of attention with two minutes left when he allowed play to continue after Stars’ substitute Jerrel Britto, who had two scoring opportunities in the second half, was brought down in the box by Kareem Baptiste.

Ma Pau’s protest was brief, possibly because the Ross Russell coached-side were already 3-0 in front at the time.

Baptiste (K) had completed a simple tap-in at the goalmouth in the 75th minute following a right side move by Edwards to round defender Kareem Baptiste before squaring a pass across the six-yard area to find his teammate.

Marvin Lee had the best scoring chance for Rangers—back with Anthony Streete as coach—which arrived in stoppage-time but the substitute forward skied overbar from inside the area in the last kick of the match.

In the second match, Police coach Hood saw his troubles heap up in doubles after both starting forwards Keion Wilson (hamstring) and Kareem Freitas (ankle) failed to continue beyond 25 minutes. And with Jameel Perry possibly out through injury and last season’s DPL topscorer Makesi Lewis out for the season with a broken leg, it was down to experimenting in attack.

Then came Boatswain’s double within a space of two minutes.

Boatswain, starting upfront in absence of injured Nigerian forward Ahinde Adeshigbin (ankle), handed Civic the shock lead (1-0) on 24 minutes after beating a host of Police players including goalkeeper Adrian Foncette just outside the top of the box to meet a long pass forward by Shaquille Stewart before hitting low into vacant net.

The powerful Boatswain then made it 2-0 a minute later when he capitalised on a blunder by the Police defence to complete his double by poking a Kestwin Goolie cross past goalkeeper Foncette.

Goodman preserved Civic’s two-goal cushion just before the half hour mark with a penalty save to deny Todd Ryan, who he had also blanked after 15 minutes.

The Civic ‘keeper had the travelling pack of Point Fortin supporters cheering again when he rushed off his line to blank Christon Thomas.

But even on his best night, Goodman was unable to stop a left-footed screamer by substitute Leach which fitted like a hand to a glove in the top left corner from 28 yards out as Police reduced the deficit 1-2 two minutes before the break—moments after defender Ryan O’Neil only won himself a yellow card for a “hand of God goal” from a corner play.

Foster later pulled Police level (2-2) on the hour mark when he headed in at the goalmouth after Goodman had produced a double-save by keeping out a powerfully struck Ryan free-kick then the initial follow-up by Leach.

The Lawmen continued to pile on the pressure with second half substitute Micah Lewis, who was also denied brilliantly by Goodman, causing havoc in Civic’s half. But a winner couldn’t be produced by either side.

Boatswain, who was inches wide of his side item early into the second half, failed to put Civic back in front ten minutes from time by hitting wide with goalkeeper Foncette at his mercy.

Then on the other end, Leach and Ryan rocked Goodman’s crossbar five minutes apart, before Kenaz Williams with the best chance of snatching the win on the latter’s rebound, skied his attempt overbar.

Police are back at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Friday against Rangers from 8pm, following a 6pm kick-off between Club Sando and Defence Force.

Ma Pau Stars meanwhile, will be at the Barataria Recreation Ground on Sunday from 5pm against hosts San Juan Jabloteh.

Club Sando and St. Ann’s Rangers stun armed forces Defence Force and Police, respectively, in Couva
ttproleague.com

Dylon King and Marvin Lee both struck as St. Ann’s Rangers—the usual minnows now occupying second—continued their surprise start to the 2016/17 Digicel Pro League season with a 2-0 win over Police FC on Friday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Rangers weren’t the only ones celebrating an upset on the night, after Club Sando, in the first game of the Couva double-header, had a goal each from Keithy Simpson, Akeem Roach and substitute Akeem Humphrey in the second half to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat Defence Force 3-2.

Defence Force were 2-0 ahead at the break after Hashim Arcia and Sean Narcis found the back of goalkeeper Kelvin Henry’s net in the 25th minute and stoppage-time of the first half, respectively, off right side crosses from winger Jemel Sebro.

Sebro (knee) failed to continue beyond the hour mark, at which time Sando had already trimmed the deficit 1-2 three minutes earlier through Jamaican midfielder Keithy Simpson, hitting past army goalkeeper Andre Marchan, following a move involving Roach and Humphrey.

Humphrey, the regular Sando captain who entered play following the break, and Roach, a 20-year-old former Defence Force player with a point to prove, were the real troublemakers against the Army/Coast Guard combination, and eventually the Angus Eve-coached Sando were celebrating their first win of the season after four attempts.

Roach levelled Sando 2-2 when he hit home from close up in the 78th minute after the army defence and ‘keeper Marchan were sent into disarray following an attempt by Simpson and a follow-up by another orange shirt.

Marchan, who was lucky not to concede four minutes from the half after defender Devin Jordan cleared off the line to deny Keron Cornwall, was forced into two later saves ten minutes from time as a rejuvenated Sando searched for the winner.

That goal, though, would come in the 85th minute through Humphrey. The attacking midfielder rounded Marchan and last ditch attempt from a defender following a pass from Roach before hitting into the net for a 3-2 score as Sando celebrated their first win of the season following narrow defeats against San Juan Jabloteh, Central FC and W Connection.

Rangers, meanwhile, are now with two wins (Defence Force and Police FC), one draw (Morvant Caledonia United) and one loss (Ma Pau Stars) under return coach Anthony Streete this season.

Friday’s win hurdled Rangers (7 points) five spots up into second on the DPL standings—two points behind leaders and two-time defending champions Central FC and one point above both San Juan Jabloteh and Ma Pau Stars, who face each other from 5pm at the Barataria Recreation Ground on Sunday.

King punished his former team-mates, Police, to put Rangers ahead on 32 minutes from a well-orchestrated set piece above the area that sent goalkeeper Adrian Foncette the wrong way.

Police, unable to shake off last Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Point Fortin Civic, mounting numerous raids—many of which were quelled by Rangers goalkeeper Cleon John—but were unable to find a way back.

Rangers, though, the quicker of the two teams on the night and looked more dangerous on the counterattack, including a play that saw King rattle the crossbar a minute from time.

But Police’s lights were finally out in stoppage-time when a wonder goal by substitute Lee made it 2-0. Lee, set alight by a King pass, made rushed into the area and minced a couple challenges by Kenaz Williams before hitting low past Foncette to find the bottom right corner.

Defence Force midfielder Sean Narcis undergoes eye surgery…playing career threatened
ttproleague.com

An early morning vehicular accident on Saturday (today), less than eight hours after scoring his second league goal of the season from four games, could end the playing career of Defence Force veteran midfielder Sean Narcis, though his injuries are not life-threatening.
The 31-year-old Lance Corporal Narcis underwent emergency surgery to his left eye at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt. Hope following the accident which occurred on the Uriah Butler Highway in the vicinity of the Divali Nagar Site.

There were no injuries to his (Narcis) body such as broken bones, “only head trauma”, said Lieutenant Basil Thompson, the Defence Force FC team manager.

Thompson, who is at the hospital to liaise with doctors on the next step in the care of Narcis, confirmed that player underwent surgery to his eye.

If Narcis does become visually impaired, it would mean an end to his playing career, while his responsibilities with the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment will be limited to less risky duties.

Images have appeared on social media of a badly damaged Kia SUV, thought to be owned by the footballer. The vehicle appears to have been in a collision with another vehicle.

However details of surrounding the incident which occurred around 3am are still unknown to officials of the Defence Force football club.

Narcis, a two-time (2010/11 & 2012/13) Pro League medal winner with Defence Force, scored his team’s second goal in a 3-2 defeat against Club Sando on Friday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Jabloteh edge Ma Pau to go level on points with Central.
ttproleague.com.

Jamal Gay scored fourteen minutes from time to earn San Juan Jabloteh full points with a 1-0 win over visitors Ma Pau Stars on Sun-Fun-Day at the Barataria Recreation Ground.

The result saw Jabloteh leapfrog St. Ann’s Rangers for second spot and level on nine points with Digicel Pro League leaders and two-time defending champions Central FC, who have a better goal-difference and a game in hand against Morvant Caledonia United on Tuesday from 8pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Gay towered the Ma Pau defence on 76 minutes to head past Stars goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel off a left side Elijah Manners’ corner; his first goal of the season giving the home supporters something more to cheer about other than the free giveaways and bouncy castle that offered kids a true Sun-Fun-Day.

Samuel, whose crossbar was rattled by a rocket from Tyrone Charles just over the hour mark, denied the hosts a second item ten minutes from time with a reflex save to get to a Brent Sam free-kick which took a wicked deflection off the wall.

Ma Pau Stars coach, Ross Russell, said the contest was evenly matched, but conceded that “not much goalmouth action was produced by both sides to offer enough excitement for the good turnout of supporters” at the Barataria venue.

Russell, a two-time former league champion winning coach with Defence Force, added, “We were pushing to be second after this game, now the result is a setback for us. We did a lot of what we had set out to do but one mistake cost us.”

The Stars (6 points) maintains fourth position, one point behind Rangers, while W Connection (4 points), who faces Point Fortin Civic on Tuesday from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium, and or Morvant Caledonia United could hurdle both sides to occupy third at the end of Round One Match Day Four play.

Jabloteh head coach Keith Jeffrey reiterated that the ambition is to return the San Juan Kingsas one of the dominant forces in Trinidad and Tobago football.

Jeffrey, who led Jabloteh to a runners-up finish last season behind Central to qualify for next season’s CONCACAF Champions League qualifiers, felt his side should have put away the win early against Ma Pau despite being without six regular players.

Winger Sean Bonval, goalkeeper Shemel Louison, defender Aquil Selby, and winger Nathan Lewis, the T&T international who was shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting in his native Maloney last September, are all sidelined through injury, while regular captain Damian Williams completed his two-match suspension on Sunday and talented left full-back Keston Julien is with the T&T U20s for Caribbean qualifiers to the U20 World Cup.

Meanwhile Ma Pau had to do without former United Kingdom based forward Jason Scotland due to illness. Other veteran strikers Kerry Baptiste and Collin Samuel were used off the bench, with Russell starting Anthony Wolfe upfront.

Jeffrey, though, was happy to give his team’s supporters—who he hopes to foster as Jabloteh’s 12th-man—a victory.

Willis Plaza had three early misses for the San Juan Kings while winger Noel Williams struck wide with the goal at his mercy – all within the first fifteen minutes.

“As far as I am concerned, we kept them (Ma Pau) in the game,” said Jeffrey. “No disrespect to Ma Pau but they came with a game plan to sit deep and try to beat us on the counter[attack] and I didn’t see that beating us. The possession, in my opinion, was 65/35 in our favour—a one-way contest. If you look at the first 15 minutes we should have been 4 nil and that would have forced them to change their game plan.”

Ruthless Connection humiliate 10-man Civic; Central edge Morv’t Caledonia to stay perfect
ttproleague.com

W Connection, still fresh from last week’s embarrassing defeat at Mexico’s Pumas UNAM in the Concacaf Champions League, unleashed all their fury on unsuspecting opponents as 10-man Point Fortin Civic were trashed 7-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

The result lifted Connection -- now tied on 7 points with St. Ann’s Rangers -- four spots up the Digicel Pro League standings into third, that’s two spots down from leaders Central FC (12 points), who edged Morvant Caledonia United 2-1 in the second game of Tuesday’s double-header at the Couva venue to maintain their 100 per cent record after four league games.

Winger Neil Benjamin Jr. grabbed an uninterrupted hat-trick while Dimitrie Apai, Andre Toussaint, Gerard Williams and Daniel Diaz each had a goal for Connection as cellar-placed Civic conceded the heaviest DPL defeat of the season to date.

Remember the expression: when it rains, it pours? This was exactly the case for Civic, who, a week ago had held Police to a draw, but on Tuesday night were brought crashing down to earth by Connection.

Civic’s defence were caught flat twice by former player Andre Toussaint who provided the telling passes for Suriname forward Dimitrie Apai and Benjamin to score past goalkeeper Miles Goodman in the 23rd and 37th minutes, respectively.

Connection were 2-0 up while Civic’s best chance of a possible comeback, striker Jamile Boatswain (hamstring), was replaced injured just beyond the half hour mark.

The problems of Civic coach and Point Fortin legend Dick Furlonge quickly raged on after his side were reduced to 10 men two minutes after Connection’s second goal.

Defender Ancil Wells saw a straight red out of referee Kevin Smart’s pocket after appearing to elbow opposing defender Ronell Paul, who joined Connection from Civic this season.

Two minutes from the break, Benjamin got to his second after beating a hapless Goodman to send Connection 3-0 at the half. Toussaint, involved again, squared a pass to the right to find 20-year-old Diaz, one of a handful of new signings by Connection this season, in the middle of the Civic half, and the diminutive attacker instinctively fed Benjamin through towards the box.

Picking up where he left off, Benjamin completed his hat-trick -- surpassing his league tally of last season -- for a 4-0 Connection cushion with a cool finish into a vacant net nine minutes into the second period after rounding Goodman following a measured pass behind the Civic defence by St. Lucia international Kurt Frederick.

Goodman, who did rescue Civic at times, was hung out to dry multiple more times against a side returning home from an 8-1 trashing at Pumas after struggling to cope at altitude 2000 metres above sea level in their final game of the 2016/17 CONCACAF Champions League group stage.

Toussaint, who was denied by the frame in the first half, fittingly added his name to the scoresheet to put Connection 5-0 on 64 minutes, hitting into the back of the net from close up on a second bite after his initial attempt rebounded off the crossbar.

Gerard Williams sent Goodman the wrong way in the 82nd minute to convert Connection’s sixth goal (6-0) from the penalty spot after defender Shevon Abraham was adjudged to have brought down substitute Shaquille Bertrand inside the area.

Then Diaz, who terrorised Civic non-stop, redeemed himself after an earlier miss to complete the 7-0 romp two minutes from time by scoring his second goal of the season off Goodman’s upright following a dazzling run and combine with Benjamin.

Central, like Connection, entered Tuesday’s game on the heels of a disappointing exit at the Concacaf Champions League following last week’s 4-1 defeat at Sporting Kansas City, but the “Couva Sharks” faced Morvant Caledonia United—a side desperate to shake off a 4-2 home defeat against San Juan Jabloteh.

However, first half goals by Jason Marcano and Marcus Joseph, kept Central perfect at the summit despite Morvant Caledonia trimming the deficit in stoppage-time of the first period through World Cup 2006 midfielder Densill Theobald.

Morvant Caledonia matched Central for speed early on with both sides denied by big saves from Trinidad and Tobago national team shot-stoppers Marvin Phillip and Jan-Michael Williams on either end.

Williams superbly put behind a Seon Thomas header on 7 minutes to deny Morvant Caledonia and ten minutes later Phillip, in a one-on-one on the opposite end, denied Joseph (M) who attempted to chip the visiting custodian.

Joseph (M) was denied again when Morvant Caledonia’s Ghanaian defender Maestro Mensah got his leg in the way of the Central forward’s goal-bound attempt.

But from the resulting corner, Marcano swooped in to meet Joseph (M)’s kick, hitting past Phillip for a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

Joseph (M) finally found the back of Morvant Caledonia’s net on 38 minutes to put Central at a 2-0 cushion. Picked out by a pass out of the back by Andre Ettiene, Joseph (M) exchanged a pass with Keron Cummings before blasting into the far bottom corner of Phillip’s net.

Central, however, failed to clear a dangerous Jameel Neptune cross and Densill Theobald reduced the visitors’ deficit 1-2 by rifling low into the net two minutes from the break.

The second half saw Central enjoy the better share of some enterprising plays but no further goals, other than a disallowed Marcano finish, were produced.

Williams, on either side of the break, preserved Central’s narrow lead with saves to deny Kareem Joseph free-kick attempts, while Sheldon Holder, with the best chance for an equaliser for the visitors, flopped his attempt wide from inside the six-yard area in the 72nd minute following a right side move by Akim Armstrong.

On the other end Central substitute Nathaniel Garica and Marcano were both denied by Phillip in separate plays, before Marcano finally had the ball in the back of the net again in stoppage-time but no goal ruled the referee, before signalling a handball against the “Couva Sharks” attacker.

Connection and Central will return to play on Friday against Defence Force and Ma Pau Stars, respectively, in the first of two Round One Match Day Five double-headers on the weekend at the Mahaica Oval, which will come alive again on Sunday when Club Sando face Morvant Caledonia United and hosts Point Fortin Civic entertain St. Ann’s Rangers.

Round One Match Day Five will later culminate at the Ato Boldon Stadium next Tuesday with Police FC facing San Juan Jabloteh.

Could 2016/17 be one of the most competitive seasons in the Pro League?
ttproleague.com

Central FC are perfect at the top of the Digicel Pro League 2016-2017 standings after four matches, sitting three points ahead of the pack as the Couva Sharkschase a third consecutive league crowning.

But Keith Jeffrey, coach of second-positioned San Juan Jabloteh (9 points), predicts the 2016-2017 season – shortened (Sep. 2016 – Feb. 2017) to facilitate reverting to the old April to December format in 2017 – will be one of the most competitive league title challenges in the history of the Pro League.

Speaking after his team’s narrow 1-0 win over visiting Ma Pau Stars last Sun-Fun-Day, the Jabloteh coach also pointed out, “Looking at the weekend results (Club Sando 3-2 Defence Force; St. Ann’s Rangers 2-0 Police FC), anything can happen in the league.”

The season is still young but results such as Police FC’s 5-1 win over Ma Pau Stars, St. Ann’s Rangers’ 2-0 wins over Defence Force and Police FC, and Club Sando’s 3-2 win over Defence Force adds steel to Jeffrey’s predictions.

On Tuesday, though, Central, led by coach Dale Saunders who is assisted by ex-Trinidad and Tobago forward Stern John, maintained their 100 percent league form with a 2-1 win over a stubborn Morvant Caledonia United challenge, while W Connection, multiple-time former champions, showed no mercy against cellar-placed Point Fortin Civic, trashing the southerners 7-0.

However former W Connection and St. Lucia forward Earl Jean, who serves as an assistant coach to his fellow countryman and longstanding Connection coach, Stuart Charles-Fevrier, echoed Jeffrey’s feelings.

“This will be a good season for people who enjoy football,” said Jean, who, during his playing career, had stints in Portugal, England and China. “The league is very competitive and it has been growing this way since last year. We will continue to see some very interesting results, some of them shocking. Nothing is lost yet, with everything still to play for.”

This season’s abbreviated format will feature just two Rounds of league action (18 games per team), and just the First Citizens Cup and Digicel Pro Bowl knockout titles to compete for.

However Jean dismisses the assumption that the changes for 2016-2017 PL calendar will take the sting out of competition. “Every team wants to enjoy this season,” he said. “It is shorter, yes, and changes are in. But it will be exciting for everyone.”

On Connection’s thumping of Civic, Jean credited, in part, the performance to his team’s involvement in the just concluded 2016-2017 CONCACAF Champions League group stage in which Central were also a part of, having both qualified out of the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship.

“Of course, playing at that (Concacaf) level give us an edge back home,” he said. “We are always grateful for the experience and playing against the best players in Concacaf. It give us added motivation to do well in our (domestic) league. So it was good to come back and setting our foot down [with such a result and performance against Civic].

But like two-time reigning Caribbean champions Central, Connection finished bottom of their CCL group, bowing out on a disappointing 8-1 loss last week in Mexico City against Pumas UNAM.

“I don’t think they (Pumas) were seven goals better than us,” said Jean, whose side were at a huge disadvantage playing on Pumas’ Estadio Olimpico Universitario home turf situated over 2000 metres above sea level. “The altitude had a lot to do with the result up there. We had a couple of our players bleeding from the nose while everyone had difficulty breathing.”

Connection and Central were both at early disadvantage, beginning CCL play in the off-season of the Pro League and against top Concacaf teams well into their respective domestic seasons. This is one disadvantage the PL will eliminate by reverting to the old April to December format.

Jean also credited his players, most of whom needed a couple days rest after the Mexico nightmare, for their focus and dedication in Tuesday’s win over Civic, especially during a period he described “devastating” for the club. The club had lost its former team administrator Raymond Mc Lean who passed away a week earlier, and on Saturday, there was the news out of St. Lucia on the passing of Patrick Newton Fevrier, father of technical director/head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier.

Connection and Central will both return to play on Friday against Defence Force and Ma Pau Stars, respectively, in the first of two Round One Match Day Five double-headers on the weekend at the Mahaica Oval, which will come alive again on Sunday when Club Sando face Morvant Caledonia, and hosts Point Fortin Civic entertain St. Ann’s Rangers.

Round One Match Day Five will culminate on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium with Police FC against Jabloteh, who will welcome back into the fold talented 18-year-old left full-back Keston Julien from duty with the Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 team.

Julien, a former W Connection player, is one of the talents to watch this season along with new Connection signing, enterprising 20-year-old Penal-born attacker Daniel Diaz, with two goals already to his name from two appearances.

Connection attacker Neil Benjamin Jr., who netted a hat-trick against Civic, joined regular standouts Marcus Joseph (Central FC) and Willis Plaza (San Juan Jabloteh) on three goals. Above the trio and leading the PL scoring chart this season is Central FC’s Tobago-born midfielder Darren Mitchell with four goals.

Connection are third on the standings but tied on 7 points with fourth-positioned St. Ann’s Rangers, who have enjoyed their best start in recent years with two wins, one draw and a loss under returning coach Anthony Streete.

Central FC held by Ma Pau Stars; Connection continue rise after win over D/Force.
ttproleague.com.

Central’s 100 percent run of form this season in the Digicel Pro League was snapped by Ma Pau Stars, who held the two-time defending champions to a goalless draw on Friday night in the second game of a double-header at the Mahaica Oval.

Central entered the game on a four-game league winning roll after wins over W Connection, Club Sando, Defence Force and Morvant Caledonia United, but failed to continue their hot streak against Ma Pau Stars – a team coached by their former coach Ross Russell.

The goalless result slowed the leaders, Central (13 points), while Couva rivals W Connection continued their upward thrust with a 2-0 win over Defence Force in the earlier game at the Point Fortin venue.

Andre Toussaint, one of three Point Fortin-born players used by Connection at Mahaica Oval on Friday night, fired the Savonetta Boys in front on 31 minutes following a quickly taken set-piece, before Suriname international forward Dimitrie Apai made it 2-0 in the 79th-minute after rounding goalkeeper Andre Marchan to complete a counter-attack with his second goal of the season.

Marvin Gordon, head coach of the ninth-positioned Defence Force (3 points), said afterwards that the score-line doesn’t reflect the performance of his side who were denied by the upright and had another attempt cleared off the line.

Meanwhile the 2-0 result, combined with Tuesday’s 7-0 win over Point Fortin Civic, served as a fitting tribute for former W Connection team administrator Raymond Mc Lean who passed away earlier this month.

It may also add some ease to Connection technical director/head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier, who, after attending the funeral service of his close friend, Mc Lean, last Saturday, had learnt of the passing of his father Patrick Newton Fevrier later the same day. Fevrier is expected to travel to his native St. Lucia for the funeral of his father.

Connection (10 points) leapfrogged San Juan Jabloteh (9 points)—who plays Police FC on Tuesday—for second spot while Ma Pau Stars continue to occupy fifth position but tied on seven points with fourth-placed St. Ann’s Rangers who plays Civic on Sunday when action returns to the Mahaica Oval.

Ace forward and hometown hero Marcus Joseph had a great chance to put Central ahead of the Stars in stoppage-time of the first half after Kevon Villaroal was upended in the area by Neil Gerard Mitchell.

“You know where he is going,” shouted coach Russell to his goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel as Joseph -- who has 3 goals from four previous league games this season including a penalty item -- prepared himself above the penalty spot.

“Well done son,” soon followed off the tongue of Russell, a two-time league winning coach with Defence Force who had a five-month stint with Central at the start of the 2015-2016 season, and knows a lot about goalkeeping being a former ‘keeper himself.

Samuel had picked right. The Stars’ goalie had dived low to his right to thwart his former Trinidad and Tobago 2007 and 2009 FIFA Youth World Cup team-mate’s left-footed strike from the spot.

“Yesterday in training we did some penalty kicks and he (Joseph) was good but today he came and passed the ball to the goalkeeper,” said Central FC head coach Dale Saunders as he rued his sides missed chances which included a wide header by Darren Mitchell and another strike from Joseph which swerved just wide of the top corner in the first half.

“Even in the second half we created some chances to bag some goals but didn’t,” continued Saunders, who had replaced Joseph just before the hour mark with Johan “Guti” Peltier.

“He (Joseph) was a little too relaxed… a bit lethargic,” the Central coach explained over his decision to replace the talented forward. “As a big striker you have to put away those goals. We have depth in our team [therefore] everyone deserves a chance.”

“Finish Guti!” shouted Saunders from the technical area in the 68th minute. But Peltier had lifted his attempt for a comfortable take by Samuel. “No! On the ground,” came the following instruction.

Peltier did laser another attempt on the ground ten minutes from time, but Samuel was equal to the test.

“Credit to them (Ma Pau Stars), they came with a plan and went away with a point,” conceded Saunders after the game. “We didn’t put away our chances today but once we haven’t lost, it’s good for us.”

Russell meanwhile said it was easier planning for Central because of his familiarity with most of the Couva Sharks’ players.

“Central have been unstoppable [in the league] since last year and a point for us (Ma Pau Stars) right now is good for our team because we are a rebuilding team while Central were playing at a higher level (at the Concacaf Champions League) and are unbeaten [domestically].

“We (Ma Pau Stars) are getting better as we go along. The players are now meshing together. Our point [earned] tonight is a great achievement for the team—we have ended the winning run of Central,” concluded Russell.

Rangers nears personal target after trashing Civic; Caledonia and Sando share spoils in six-goal thriller.
ttproleague.com.

Jomoul Francois scored a second half double after being involved in two earlier goals as St. Ann’s Rangers snatched their third win of the season with a 4-0 hammering of home side Point Fortin Civic on Sun-Fun-Day.

Previously dubbed the whipping boys of the Digicel Pro League, Rangers are now up one spot into third, hurdling San Juan Jabloteh, who plays Police FC on Tuesday, by one point, to join second positioned W Connection on 10 points—three points adrift of 2016-2017 leaders and two-time defending champions Central FC.

Rangers coach Anthony Streete said afterwards, the target is to achieve “more than fourteen points”. That’s the points tally Rangers achieved under last season’s coach, Angus Eve, as the struggling St. Ann’s club finished last for a third consecutive time.

“I just want to prove it wasn’t really the players [at fault],” said Streete who returned this season as coach of Rangers. “Don’t take a job that you know will have faults and make the players the problem. If you take such a job, you have to do your best to try and make it work.”

Coincidentally, Eve now heads Club Sando, the side Streete led to a seventh-position finish on Pro League debut last season.

Sando were also in action on Sunday but had to settle for a point after thrilling 3-3 draw against Morvant Caledonia United in the first game of the Mahaica Oval double-header.

Sando had led on three occasions with goals by Keron Cornwall, Akeem Roach and substitute Shaquille Holder but failed to hold out against the Eastern Stallions who snatched their third equaliser in stoppage time.

Kordell Samuel first equalised for Morvant Caledonia three minutes from the half off a low feed from Jameel Neptune after Cornwall had put Sando ahead just over the half hour mark with a solo item.

Roach then restored Sando’s advantage in the 56th minute with his second league goal this season after beating goalkeeper Stephon Seepersad to the ball to hit into an exposed net. But six minutes later Akim Armstrong, also for his second goal of the season, headed in a Densill Theobald corner to level the scores again.

The see-saw effect continued after Holder buried a rebound to again put Sando ahead following a save by Seepersad -- who started in absence of injured Marvin Phillip (groin) -- to deny Keithy Simpson in the 89th minute.

Morvant Caledonia were in the end celebrating a point after staring defeat in the face.

Neptune the hero.

The winger connected to a long pass out of the back by defender Seon Thomas before quickly rounding goalkeeper Kelvin Henry inside the area to hit into the net for his third league goal of the season and a 3-3 finish in stoppage time.

The result saw Morvant Caledonia (5 points) and Sando (4 points) maintain seventh and eight positions, respectively.

“It was a roller-coaster game,” said Morvant Caledonia coach Rajesh Latchoo, who condemned his defence. “I’m not pleased with our defenders. We kept making mistakes and paid for those mistakes.

“Yes we are getting better, but if we didn’t make mistakes, we won 3 nil (sic).

“We stay in front [of Sando], they don’t leapfrog us,” continued the irate Morvant Caledonia coach. “…but that’s not where we wanted to be. We wanted to move forward on seven points and unfortunately we had to keep chasing the game because of those moments of lack in concentration by our defenders.”

Latchoo did however credit his offence with special mention of Neptune for his late equaliser and early assist.

In the second game, however, Civic were caught cold and Rangers grabbed a two-goal cushion within the first seven minutes through attackers Osaze Springer and Dylon King before Francois completed the rout with two to his name following the break.

A diminutive Springer handed Rangers a 1-0 lead on four minutes when he completed a solo move with a low drive into the far bottom corner of goalkeeper Miles Goodman’s net after he was set into motion by Francois outside the right of the area.

Francois, enjoying his first start for Rangers this season, then picked out King lurking at the top of the area in the 7th minute, and the former Police FC attacker, after shuffling to make room for himself, let off a strike to beat Goodman for a 2-0 cushion.

Rangers continued their dominance against the cellar-placed Civic, who were without injured forwards Jamille Boatswain and Nigerian Ahinde Adeshigin, but featured three teenaged Venezuelan signings on coach Dick Furlonge’s 18-man squad. Jose Herrera, 17, started in attacking midfield and winger Mario Romeo, 19, off the bench in the second half, while defender Nestor Ruiz, 18, remained an unused substitute.

Perhaps it was a wise choice by Furlonge not to toss Ruiz into a sure baptism of fire against a fully charged Francois, who frolicked against the Civic defenders more than kids had earlier enjoyed romping in the bouncy castle on Sun-Fun-Day.

Francois, who was denied twice in the first half by Goodman, finally beat the Civic goalie four minutes after the break with a hit from the right to find the far top corner as Rangers enjoyed a 3-0 lead.

The former North East Stars winger then completed his double and Rangers 4-0 scoring in the 82nd minute with a low strike off a Jameel Antoine feed to find Goodman’s far netting.

Civic’s Sylvester Teesdale and Akeem Redhead were both denied by the frame in the 86th minute and stoppage time, respectively, as the home side searched for a late consolation item.

“Praises to my team and the staff for reaching this far,” said coach Streete, whose side stands with three wins (Defence Force, Police FC & Point Fortin Civic), one draw (Morvant Caledonia United) and one loss (Ma Pau Stars). “…especially the players believing in themselves. I think the last couple years they weren’t believing in themselves. Now they are winning and they are more and more believing in themselves.”

Streete, who considers himself a tactician, said his players are committed to the task and the team even on the training pitch. Streete also said the younger players are feeding off the experience of teammates such as goalkeeper Cleon John, Devon Drayton and Dylon King who he considers the backbone of the team.

Sando must next face W Connection and Streete, who steered his former side Sando to two league wins over the Savonetta Boys last season, is hoping to extend his winning trend as coach against the Couva powerhouse.
