Central FC toil.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

LEADERS Central Football Club laboured before grinding out a deserved 2-0 win over Courts Morvant/Caledonia United in the Digicel Pro League on Tuesday night at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

With eight match days left in the Pro League season, which ends in February, “The Sharks”, Central FC, are still unbeaten and lead the Pro League with 32 points, maintaining a four-point lead over second-placed W Connection, which also kept pace with a 4-0 shutout of the bottom club Point Fortin Civic.

Following a goalless first half, Johan Peltier, a second half impact substitute, finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, when running onto a long punt down the middle, fighting off a challenge, before finally chipping over Morvant/Caledonia goalkeeper Stephon Seepersad. And from a free-kick, poor defending allowed Jason Marcano to poke a low shot to the goal and make it 2-0 with three minutes left.

For the first 45 minutes, Central FC had struggled to break down a solid bunker from Morvant-Caledonia United, the only team to beat the two-time Caribbean and Trinidad and Tobago champions this season, albeit on penalties, in a First Citizens Cup knockout match.

Central FC also struggled to create clear first-half chances. The “Sharks” captain Darrin Mitchell had one, when putting a close-up left footer an inch past the post from Marcano’s feed on the half-hour mark. And just eight minutes later, young striker Nicholas Dillion saw Cali goalie Seepersad well advanced, but a slight deflection diverted his shot wide of the target. And before the first half ended, both Marcano and Dillion then missed in quick succession, after a horrendous mistake which saw the Cali keeper drop a cross at Dillion’s feet.

Later, Police drew a match between two teams desperate for points, with a 1-1 tie against St Ann’s Rangers.
Tall striker Jameel Perry put away the first of his three good first-half chances to break the deadlock in the 25th with a low shot down the middle, giving Police a 1-0 advantage.

However, Rangers did enough to at least gain a point, but only did so deep into injury time when, with the final kick of the match, Lester Durham put away a low shot after Police had missed several attempts to clear the ball.

Earlier, Dylon King might have had Rangers level in the 35th, had goalie Theon Browne not gotten a touch as the free attacker tried to go around him. Browne repeated the feat early in the second half when racing bravely out of his area to foil Rangers again. After applying severe second-half pressure, Rangers won a 65th-minute penalty when Police defender Anton Hutchinson handled the ball in the penalty area. But the effort was so poorly placed that goalkeeper Browne just had to swat the shot away.

Jorsling again as Defence Force surges upward

Jorsling again as Defence Force surges upward
ttproleague.com

Heading into the Digicel Pro league Christmas break, defending champions Central F.C still occupy poll position on the points table four points ahead of second placed W Connection but all eyes are fixed on midtable and the Defence Force. Marvin Gordon and his men registered their fourth successive league win on Tuesday to surge into 4th position on the standings.

At the time of their First Citizens Cup triumph three weeks ago, Lance Corporal Gordon along with his soldiers, sailors and airmen were wallowing in the bottom half of the table and seemingly headed for a terrible season but grabbing the most popular title in local football apparently cured what was ailing the men from Tetron. The resurgence continued on Match Day Three of Round 2 with a workman-like 2-0 win over Club Sando. Once again it was Devorn Jorsling leading the charge up front, the ace marksman opened the scoring in the 32nd minute and as Club Sando went in search of another late draw similar to what they did against Central on Friday, Jorsling knocked the wind out of their efforts with his second goal which came with just four minutes remaining in regulation time. Those strikes bring his league tally to nine goals so far, that coupled with his seven from the FC Cup makes for some impressive scoring form.

The taste of the victory became even sweeter later that night because the second match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium between Ma Pau Stars and San Juan Jabloteh ended in a 1-1 stalemate which allowed Defence Force to leap-frog the team from Sangre Grande and settle in fourth place. Jerrel Britto opened the scoring for Ma Pau with a 35th minute item but that was cancelled out ten minutes into the second half by national team striker Willis Plaza. The draw keeps Jabloteh in third but coach Keith Jeffrey may be uneasy during the break with the knowledge that the military team is just one point behind and Ma Pau two adrift.

At the top of the table Central F.C remains unbeaten but made it look hard against Morvant/Caledonia in a 2-0 win at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Rajesh Latchoo’s team put up a tough fight until the 64th minute, that’s when substitute Johan Peltier eased the nerves of Dale Saunders and the Central coaching staff with a well taken goal. The hard-working Jason Marcano got the second with three minute remaining to give the defending champions their tenth win in twelve matches.

In the second match at the Couva venue, Police F.C were on course for a ‘bounce back’ win versus St. Anns Rangers following their loss last week but Jameel Perry’s 25th minute goal was not enough for Richard Hood’s team because a late strike by Lester Durham in add-on time is what put a rare smile on the face of Rangers coach Anthony Streete as the draw kept his team third from bottom.

The other strugglers did not do much better. W Connection travelled to the Mahaica Oval and wrapped up a win versus Point Fortin Civic F.C by the 22nd minute of the contest. Daniel Diaz (18th) and Shackiel Henry (20th and 22nd) were the early scorers for the Savonetta Boys and this blitz was capped off with an 80th minute item by the in-form Dimitri Apai to make the final score 4-0 ‘W’.

There will be only six Match Days to go when the League resumes on January 6th but none can rest comfortably in the race for the title…although it will be brave to bet against Central with ‘W’ already out of their path.

Pro League teams get Christmas $$$
T&T Guardian

Newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sport Company of T&T (SporTT) Adam Montserin wasted no time in tackling his new job and, as promised, provided funding to some of the Pro League teams, a day after meeting with representatives of the Club.

Montserin and executive managers of the SporTT Company sat with club officials, at the media room of the company’s head office in the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva on Thursday morning, to resolve funding and compliance issues that previously prevented the clubs to access their monthly budget subvention.

Present at the meeting were representatives of Central FC, Club Sando, Ma Pau Stars FC, Morvant Caledonia United, Point Fortin Civic FC, San Juan Jabloteh, St Ann’s Rangers and W Connection. The SporTT team provided guidance to the clubs on a wide range of issues including compliance with the Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements and challenges faced by the clubs in earning revenue on a continuous basis.

Jamaal Shabazz, manager of Morvant Caledonia said, “We do not intend for the funding to be viewed as a social programme so we would like SporTT to assist us with funding compliance and generating income.”

Coming out of the discussions, seven of the eight Pro League teams represented received their funding, having provided the necessary documentation.

For the past two months, clubs have not received their $50,000 monthly Government subvention which was due to the current financial state as reported earlier this week, by the chairman of the SporTT Company, Michael Phillips. He said that one of the challenges of making the SporTT Company viable was its inability to collect money from the rental of the sporting facilities, for which they are responsible.

Earlier this year Minister of Sport, Darryl Smith, had assured clubs of the continuation of Government assistance through the SporTT Company until the end of the season, which is in February.

Montserin promised to continue the conversation in the New Year saying, “We would meet again in January to look at improving how we engage clubs and to further discuss the possibility of public-private partnerships to enable them to achieve their objectives.”

A former Fatima College student, Montserin, took over as CEO, replacing former acting CEO Adrian Raymond, some three months after Raymond’s contract was terminated on August 30, making it the seventh change in the position since former Prime Minister Patrick Manning established the institution in 2004.

The former CEO at iGovTT’s National Information and Communication Technology Company Limited will be operating out of the National Velodrome and the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva, where the headquarters of the SporTT Company was relocated.

Clubs urged to be financially compliant

Clubs urged to be financially compliant
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

Seven Pro League clubs yesterday received most of the outstanding $50,000-per-month subventions that they were owed by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) since October.

In a media release issued by SPORTT yesterday, it was revealed that representatives from eight Pro League clubs - Central FC, W Connection, San Juan Jabloteh, Point Fortin Civic, Ma Pau Stars, Morvant Caledonia United, Club Sando and St Ann’s Rangers, met with recently-appointed SPORTT CEO Adam Montserin and executive managers on Thursday to discuss financial issues at SPORTT ’s office, located at the National Cycling Velodrome in Balmain, Couva.

Police and Defence Force are exempt from the monthly subventions as their players are members of the protective services.

“Coming out of the discussions, seven of the eight Pro League teams represented received their funding, having provided the necessary documentation,” the media release said.

SPORTT chairman Michael Phillips yesterday declined to name the team which did not receive its subventions, stating that he didn’t want to hinder the club from attracting potential sponsors.

However, Montserin, in the media release, noted, “we would meet again in January to look at improving how we engage clubs and to further discuss the possibility of public-private partnerships to enable them to achieve their objectives.” Central FC owner and managing director Brent Sancho, in a telephone interview yesterday, said, “we had a meeting with the new CEO, (not me) but one of my representatives from the club (operations director Kevin Harrison).

They mentioned that they had financial challenges but they had to try and make sure that they could try and stay up to date with the subventions.”

Concerning the subventions, Sancho stated, “as far as I understand, apparently they wanted clubs to be compliant. The only unfortunate thing they did is waiting until now to pay that. I’m sure that’s a bit of a blow to the clubs that need the money but I’m sure the clubs are working to become compliant.” The ex-national defender admitted that Central FC was one of the clubs which got their Christmas wish yesterday.

“We have 80-90 percent of what is required and we’re still working on others to make sure that we’re compliant,” he stated. “This is not just for Pro League clubs. This is for NGBs (National Governing Bodies) and everybody who receives monies from the Sports Company.

“The challenge of it is that some of the governing bodies and Pro League clubs, some of the things that they’ve asked for, it is a bit of a challenge for small organisations to put together,” he added. “And I’m hoping that the Sports Company works in conjunction with the governing bodies and the clubs to make sure everyone comes up to scratch and everybody is fully compliant.

“From a Pro League perspective, during the two-month wait for the subventions, the clubs could have been working on the compliancy. I hope that some kind of logic comes about, while working with the clubs, and they still make sure and give them their subventions.

At the end of the day it’s Christmas and the players should get their monies for Christmas.” Asked if the subventions were from October to now or just the month of December, Sancho responded, “I think one month is missing from what I understand. I think they got up until November.”

What did the clubs need to do to come up to scratch? Sancho replied, “things like your business plan, (strategic) plan, things like your constitution, accounts, all these different things that they were asking for, which is something that they’re putting into place. The problem is for some clubs it’s a bit of a challenge in trying to get those things together. At the end of the day, it is a right move (by SPORTT ).”

Sprint to Pro League title resumes.
ttproleague.com.

The race for the 2016/2017 Pro League title resumes on Friday following a short Christmas break and all eyes are on Central F.C who are yet to taste defeat in this campaign.

The defending champions are four points ahead of their nearest challengers, Direct TV W Connection and with six matches to go Dale Saunders and his men must stay focus. “The ball is round and anything can happen so we are not leaving anything to chance. The team is working hard and we remain vigilant” Saunders told Pro League media.

“We know how to win titles and will do everything it takes to successfully defend this one plus, we are fully aware of what’s happening around us which is motivation to keep focused and working hard” said the former National midfielder.

What’s comforting for the Central Sharks is the satisfaction of already dispatching W Connection in this second round of league action, which means Stuart Charles-Fervier’s team will need some help if they are to wrest the championship trophy away from the holders. That help could start as early as Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium when the Sharks face a resurgent Defence Force, winner of their last four league encounters. Led by a rampant Devorn Jorsling up front, Marvin Gordon’s team has been unstoppable since winning the First Citizens Cup in early December and although they are thirteen points adrift of Central, their recent form will give them hope of at least a Champions League spot after a terrible start to the season.

A victory for the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen could buss the title race wide open if ‘W’ gets pass a tricky Club Sando in the first game of the Hasely Crawford double header. According to the Connection coaching staff they will do what they must do because the race is not over and there are teams still capable of upsetting the defending champs.

Also in the chasing pack is San Juan Jabloteh who sit in third, some 12 points out of the lead and eight behind Connection. Head Coach and Technical Director Keith Jeffrey is not ruling out a run for the league title but also has his eyes on a bigger picture. “We have CFU Champions League starting in February so our focus includes that because it’s our intention to make club and country proud. If we finish in the top two of the Pro league while doing that I would be satisfied” Jeffrey said.

Rounding out the top five is Ross Russell and his Ma Pau Stars who are fourteen points away from poll position. They will be confident in their hope of remedying that when they face third from bottom St. Ann’s Rangers in the opening game of Match Day Four, Round Two at the Barataria Recreation ground from 5:00pm.

The Sangre Grande squad has blown hot and cold this season with Russell taking the mixture of youth and experience to a next level. The form of 38 year old captain Carlos Edwards has been a definite plus for Ma Pau as well as the player who has been recalled to lead the national team due to his outstanding Pro League play.

The goalkeeping of Glenroy Samuel has also caught the eye of the national selectors and this will be a key factor if the Stars are to make a run for at least a champions league place. That will be the goal of most teams despite their voicing of league glory ambitions because under the regional spotlight is where they all want to reach.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Lansiquot emerges as Rangers stun Ma Pau.
ttproleague.com.

To say Ma Pau Stars missed the services of defender Carlos Edwards and goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel would be a bit of an understatement as Digicel Pro League action resumed at the Barataria recreation ground on Friday with Match Day Four of Round Two.

With those two key players away on National duty, the Sangre Grande outfit went down 5-3 to St Ann’s Rangers who saw the emergence of a 19 year old on the big stage. Remember the name, Micah Lansiquot, the Carenage native was undoubtedly the star of the show as Anthony Streete’s team made a mockery of game predictions to upset the team who was sitting three places above them on the points table in fifth.

Lansiquot got the scoresheet buzzing as early as the 11th minute with a beauty of a finish which Ma Pau goalkeeper on the day Shane Mattis could do nothing about as his defence failed to clear a throw-in from the left side and Jameel Antoine lobbed a side-footed pass to the National under 20 winger who controlled and let loose up into the top corner.

Three minutes later he was causing problems again when he burst through the heart of the Ma Pau defence following a steal and slipped one to Dylon King who made no mistake. Things settled down a bit after that and Ma Pau even created a couple chances but Christopher Biggette did well to keep them out.

The scoring resumed in the 37th minute when Ross Russell’s men went to sleep while defending a corner and Antoine turned scorer to make it 3-0 Rangers as his shot caused Mattis to have an unwanted meeting with the post.

That goal woke them up, six minutes later, the ever dependable Jerrel Britto surprised Biggette with a low scorcher from atop the box to make the score 3-1 at the half. Fifteen minutes into the second period Hayden Tinto caused some worry to creep into the Rangers camp when he pulled his team within one with a rocket from a tight angle.

Things got worse one minute later when Samuel Delice got a red card following a second caution when he upended Britto. It was Britto causing issues again after that as he earned a penalty for his team which was saved by Biggette but Streete did all the right things on the evening as he regrouped his players with some calm instructions which resulted in goal number four coming off the boot of King in the 76th minute. Once again it was Lansiquot doing all the hard work on the flank to provide the assist.

Defender Shakiyl Phillip got into the act with five minutes remaining when he took the ball from deep in his half straight to the opposing goal to kill off all resistance from Ma Pau. Well not all, there was Britto again in the 87th minute to round out the scoring and make the final score 5-3. The win taking St Ann’s Rangers to sixth on the points table and within sight of their season ambitions to finish in the top five.

Game two at Barataria was not as goal filled but another youngster made his name on the night not only with a goal but with some fine mature play in the San Juan Jabloteh offence. Josiah Trimmingham with the lone item for Keith Jeffrey’s team in a win over Morvant/Caledonia United. That triumph keeping Jabloteh in touch with the leaders who are in separate encounters on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 6:00pm and 8:00pm.

Was thinking the same. Yuh seeing more boat rides ahead?

He's on the U20 NT. Comes off the bench, but as I said on another thread, would like to see what he can deliver from the first whistle.

The hat-trickery of Jamal Charles brings ‘W’ within a point.
ttproleague.com.

Boom! And just like that the high-mast flood lights at the Hasely Crawford Stadium were gone for the night.

The electrical malfunction was caused by an exploding transformer just outside the Wrightson road venue and that brought a premature end to proceeding on Match Day Four of Round Two, meaning the highly-anticipated clash between Digicel Pro League leaders Central F.C and a surging Defence Force had to be rescheduled.

Despite missing out on game two of the double header, there was none of the customary grumbling from fans which is possibly due to the entertainment provided in game one between mid-table Club Sando and second placed W Connection.

The final score of 3-1 might hint at some form of domination by the eventual winners W Connection but in fact it was a competitive affair which was decided by a player finding his scoring form on the night. Jamal Charles was undoubtedly the player of the night as he banged in three goals to give W Connection the win and bring them within a point of the forcibly idle Central F.C.

The last time Charles featured on the score sheet was back in Round One versus the very same Sando and he showed his liking for the back of their net 30 minutes into the encounter with a well taken header following Shaquille Bertrand’s chip over goalkeeper Kelvin Henry.

He was at it again in the 43rd minute but had little to do for his second as Kevon Goddard stole the ball in midfield and punished the Sando defence with a well measured pass to Neil Benjamin who in turn provided the perfect center for Charles to slot home and give his team a 2-0 lead at the half.

When the second half got underway, it took a fine save from Henry to deny Charles an early triple after he was sent clear through by another neat pass from Bertrand but it would be the southerners pulling one back through Keron Cornwall who slapped one pass the first post of Terrence Lewis after receiving  the ball from his captain Akeem Humphrey at the end of a well-orchestrated build up by Angus Eve’s team in the 50th minute.

Sando did press for the equalizer but the Savonetta Boys stood firm in defence and then came the goal of the night which proved that Charles was in inspired form. The ever-green Andre Toussaint took the ball in midfield and bisected the four man Sando defence with a pass to Charles who made a move to get around the goal keeper which put him at a tight angle inches from the by-line…no problem, hat trick in the 73rd minute. The result making the Central/Defence Force match even more enticing as we race to the title.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Lethal Apai boosts Connection’s league hopes
ttproleague.com

W Connection’s ambition to dethrone bitter Couva rivals Central FC in the race for the truncated 2016-17 Digicel Pro League crown received a much needed boost on Friday night when the Savonetta Boys whipped Defence Force 4-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Suriname international Dimitrie Apai bagged a double by netting on either side of the break, only separated by teammate Jamal Charles’ first half strike, before setting up Connection’s final item scored by Neil Benjamin Jr.

Connection, on 34 points and four games left, moved to the top of the standings for the first time this season while celebrating a fourth consecutive win.

However the taste at the top for coach Stuart Charles Fevrier’s men could be temporary with Central (32 points), who have led the table all of this season, returning to action against fifth-positioned Ma Pau Stars today (Saturday) from 3:30pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

The Couva Sharks, also with a rescheduled game in hand against Defence Force, are hoping to make history by becoming the first team to lift a third successive Pro League crown.

But with former champions Connection determined to put their hands on the title later this month, an exciting race to the end is on the forecast.

Electrifying was Apai. The Surinamese forward put Connection 1-0 ahead 20 seconds into play after catching Defence Force cold. Apai controlled an intelligent Kevon Goddard pass with one foot and with the other foot quickly fired low past goalkeeper Andre Marchan.

Grenada international Charles, coming off a last week’s hat-trick against Club Sando, handed Connection a 2-0 cushion in the 33rd minute which lasted into the break.

Apai, though, wasn’t done. The diminutive attacker completed a wonderful team move to make it 3-0 four minutes into the second half with his eighth league goal this term—six of them coming in his last four appearances.

Apai then turned provider just before the hour mark when he slipped a pass into the left of the area and Benjamin made it 4-0 with a brilliant left-footed strike past Marchan.

Defence Force, fourth on the standings with 19 points, finally found a consolation item through defender Jamali Garcia, who headed in a Devorn Jorsling corner for a 4-1 finish.

Jorsling, who leads the league scorers’ list this season with nine goals, saw his first-half free kick pushed behind by Connection goalie Julani Archibald and eight minutes from time he was denied by the crossbar.

Defence Force’s miserable night was compounded in stoppage-time when referee Joel Cox issued ‘keeper Marchan a direct red card for a high boot challenge on Andre Toussaint some forty yards away from the goalmouth. An ugly end for this season’s First Citizens Cup champions who entered play on a six-game winning streak in all competitions.

In the earlier game of the Hasely Crawford Stadium double-header, Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 forward Nion Lammy rescued cellar-placed Point Fortin Civic to a 1-1 draw with St. Ann’s Rangers.

Rangers had led through midfielder Jameel Antoine who redeemed himself after squandering a excellent first half opportunity by volleyed past Civic custodian Miles Goodman off a substitute Kathon St Hillare’s right side cross in the 58th minute.

But Lammy struck in the 75th minute when he directed a substitute Jeremiah Kesar’s hard-worked cross past goalkeeper Cleon John to level the score.

It was only the third point for Civic this season, who remain anchored at the bottom, while seventh-placed Rangers join Police FC on 16 points.

Police, sixth on the table, travel to third-positioned Jabloteh (23 points) today (Saturday) in the second game of a double-header at Barataria Recreation Ground while tail-enders Morvant Caledonia United and Club Sando must battle each other in the first game.

Former coach snaps Central’s unbeaten league run; title in toss as Couva Sharks beaten by Ma Pau
ttproleague.com.

Central FC’s unbeaten run in the Digicel Pro League this season came to a crashing halt on Saturday when the two-time defending champions fell 2-0 against Ma Pau Stars at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Veteran winger Hayden Tinto broke the deadlock after an hour of goalless play at the Malabar venue before a clinical Jerrel Britto from the penalty spot completed the victory for former Couva Sharks coach Ross Russell.

For Central, the loss is a dent to their ambition – to hoist a third successive league crown – with bitter rivals W Connection (34 points) leading by two points after defeating Defence Force 4-1 courtesy a double and an assist from Suriname international Dimitrie Apai on Friday night.

It spelt the end of Central’s permanent reign at the top of the standings since Oct. 7.

Central (32 points), though, have a rescheduled game in hand against Defence Force, while there are only four regular league games left in the truncated 2016-17 season which will conclude later this month.

Central, on 10 league wins and two draws prior to Saturday’s kick-off, had two first half scoring opportunities—the clearer of the two falling to Jason Marcano, but the midfielder fired overbar from the top of the six-yard area with goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel at his mercy.

Samuel was later forced into a low save near the hour mark by Marcano before a lunging goalmouth attempt from Johan Peltier on the rebound had Central, including their coach, Dale Saunders, and assistant coach, Stern John, appealing for a goal. However, assistant referee Joseph Bertrand, the official best positioned to tell if the ball had indeed crossed the line, stood his ground.

There wasn’t any doubt, however, when Tinto smashed a low drive beyond goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams in the 64th minute on the other end after the Central defence had allowed Shane Sandy’s cross to sneak through.

Central’s troubled worsened eight minutes from time when referee Keilon Bacchus pointed to the spot after defender Kevon Villaroel, in a desperate attempt to quell goal-bound run by Britto, upended the forward just inside area.

Britto made no mistake from the spot to hit beyond Williams for the 2-0 score and his seventh league goal this term.

Despite five minutes stoppage-time, and the return of speedy Tobagonian forward Rundell Winchester, who entered play on the hour mark, Central were unable to rebound from the two-goal deficit and must now focus on Tuesday, when a new slate of matches are contested.

Winchester, who is back with the Sharks following his most recent stint abroad with PS Kemi Kings in Finland, was played through on goal by Darren Mitchell with a couple minutes of regular time left, but a slip in the area saw the lanky forward steer the ball wide.

Central, for the second time in as many matches this season, were unable to beat Ma Pau, led by two-time former Defence Force league-winning coach Russell, who was sacked by the Couva Sharks after less than five months into last season. Both sides played to a goalless draw last October.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Club Sando and San Juan Jabloteh were also in winners’ row.

Nical Stephens’ 12th-minute strike provided the decisive item as Club Sando edged Courts Morvant Caledonia United 1-0 in the first game of a double-header at the Barataria Recreation Ground.

Later, Jabloteh enjoyed a 3-1 win over Police thanks to a second-half brace from forward Jamal Gay, cementing the San Juan Kings position in third on the standings with 26 points, five points ahead of Ma Pau (21 points) who hurdled Defence Force by two points for fifth position. Sando (17 points) meanwhile are sixth, climbing two spots with their narrow win.

Nathan Lewis had given Jabloteh an early lead before Police forward Jameel Perry equalised just over the half-hour mark.

But Gay struck twice in a space of 12 minutes (53rd and 64th minutes) to win it for last season’s runners-up, Jabloteh.

Tactically, in this league the overall defending is poor...thus the reason for the dominance of W Connection.

Connection is allowed to play without any real pressure and the speed of possession by Connection is slow...that alone shows the lack of fitness and tactical awareness by the players in this league.

The players are fit enough to play  a very slow brand of football which lacks any real tactics that could help the player on the International level...case in point ..the overall performance of W Connection in the Champions league.

A lot of respect is given to Connection because of their local dominance but  when you put the local game in perspective ..much is to be desired.

Very on point. That's why some players can dominate this league and can't do much once they leave for more competitive leagues.

Connection looks to extend lead but Central still confident of third successive league crowning.
ttproleague.com.

Digicel Pro League leaders W Connection will attempt to stretch the gap to five points ahead of Couva rivals Central FC when they visit St. Ann’s Rangers from 6pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday.

Connection (34 points) snatched the lead for the first time this season with last Friday’s 4-1 win over Defence Force, while Central (32 points), who previously led the standings all season, suffered their first league loss, 2-0, against Ma Pau Stars on Saturday.

But Dale Saunders, head coach at Central, says his team remains confident in becoming the first team in the history of the Pro League to capture the league crown three times in a row.

Saunders explained with a rescheduled game in hand against Defence Force, and just four remaining league games in the truncated 2016-17 season including Wednesday’s clash against Police from 3:30pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium, his team’s chances of defending the league crown is still within reach.

“Our destiny is in our hands,” said the Central coach. “We are still in a great position to win [the league] and we have no doubt that we can achieve being champions again.”

Saunders said Saturday’s loss against Ma Pau gave his players a reality check after twelve straight league games undefeated.

“We made mistakes and we didn’t score some chances [against Ma Pau],” he said. “And we also had a goal disallowed, which clearly crossed the line. But we are happy for the reality check and the players now understand the importance of getting it right at this stage [of the season]. We know what we have to do and we are going to try and win all our remaining games.”

Meanwhile W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier reminded, “We always try to win every competition; it’s the norm with us. Our objective is to be competitive and try to win games and competitions.”

The multiple-time former league winning coach added, “We want to win the league [this season] like everyone else. We have definitely improved in our results and I hope we can keep the consistency for the rest of the season.

“Our objective is just to take it game by game. They (Central) have a game in hand but whatever their results we only have control over our games. So we must remain focused, continuing with the game against Rangers on Tuesday.

“We want to win on Tuesday and I’m sure Rangers want the same. We know what we want while being mindful that most times the teams with the least mistakes come out on top,” ended the Connection coach.

Also on Tuesday, Defence Force will host Courts Morvant Caledonia United from 8pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to complete a double-header at the venue, while at the Mahaica Oval, home side Point Fortin Civic will welcome San Juan Jabloteh from 6pm and much earlier at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Ma Pau Stars will tackle Club Sando from 3:30pm.

Apai! Suriname international fires Connection five points clear.
ttproleague.com.

Leaders W Connection kept the pedal to the metal in the race for the Digicel Pro League 2016-17 crown after edging St. Ann’s Rangers 1-0 courtesy Dimitrie Apai’s first-half goal in the first game of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday night.

The win, Connection’s fifth in a row, extended the Savonetta Boys’ points tally to 37, five points ahead of Couva rivals Central FC, who have two games in hand including today’s (Wednesday) clash with Police FC from 3:30pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Apai, the 22-year-old in-form Suriname international, notched his ninth league goal – five of them coming in the last five appearances – in the 20th-minute to go level with Defence Force forward Devorn Jorsling and Ma Pau Stars attacker Jerrel Britto at the top of this season’s scorers’ list.

Jorsling, though, had a difficult night in the second game of the Port-of-Spain double-header although his side, Defence Force, rallied to a 1-1 draw with rivals Morvant Caledonia United.

Caledonia, against the run of play, grabbed the lead through new signing Dylon King in the 26th-minute. The former Rangers forward unleashed a cracker to find the top corner of goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke’s netting after Lester Joseph cleverly allowed a Kordell Samuel cross to roll through his legs to find the oncoming King above the area.

Caledonia, however, had goalkeeper Marvin Phillip to thank on numerous occasions, including the Trinidad and Tobago international’s save to put a goal-bound Jorsling free-kick onto the crossbar seven minutes into the second half.

Jorsling also had an earlier free-kick which cannoned off the crossbar on the half-hour mark of a heated contest.

But despite Phillip’s heroics—with no less than seven saves on the night—he was unable to help the ninth-positioned Caledonia avoid a winless run of four games.

Aklie Edwards surfaced the hero for the Army/Coast Guard combination when he equalised on the hour mark by heading into Phillip’s exposed net after a deep Jorsling corner was headed back across the area.

Ten minutes later Caledonia midfielder and captain Akim Armstrong was put through on the other end against Clarke, who started in absence of suspended ‘keeper Andre Marchan, but the Defence Force goalie was equal to the task.

Goal-scorer King had the last bite towards goal on the stroke of ninety minutes but his effort flashed inside wide of Clarke’s far upright.

King’s former teammates had a difficult time searching for a way back against Connection in the earlier contest after Apai had directed a Kurt Frederick attempt past Rangers goalkeeper Christopher Biggette.

Connection had capitalised after dominating on possession while Rangers were left appealing for an offside against Apai, who could have easily ended with a handful to his name had he not spill on three clear-cut chances within the first hour and rattled the bar from distance ten minutes from time.

Rangers did create a glorious chance to level the score but attacker Josh Toussaint’s acrobatic scissor-kick sailed the ball overbar instead of controlling Devon Modeste’s cross on his chest before attempting to find the back of the net, as a furious coach Anthony Streete motioned to his player afterwards.

Also on Tuesday, Ma Pau Stars rebounded from a two-goal second-half deficit to hold Club Sando to a 2-2 draw at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Akeem Humphrey opened the scoring in the 55th-minute for Sando before Kemuel Rivers made it 2-0 from the penalty spot ten minutes later. But late goals by Jerrel Britto and Nicholas Thomas in the 78th and 85th minutes, respectively, saw both sides walk away with a point each.

The biggest shocker of the day however, took place at Mahaica Oval when hosts Point Fortin Civic stunned San Juan Jabloteh 4-2 for their first win of the season despite losing ace forward Jamille Boatswain to Defence Force in the transfer window.

Boatswain, who made his Defence Force debut off the bench against Caledonia, netted seven times for Civic this season before completing his move to theTetron Boys this week.

But back home, Trinidad and Tobago youth footballers Darnell Hospedales and Nion Lammy were celebrating victory in Civic colours.

Hospedales opened his top flight account with a hat-trick, netting in the 3rd, 17th and 89th minutes for the hosts, interrupted by teammate Nion Lammy’s 39th-minute strike, while Elijah Manners and Nathan Lewis were the scorers for Jabloteh in the 50th and 68th minutes, respectively.

Civic will next face two-time defending league champions Central FC on Saturday.

Central cruise to victory over Police; Couva Sharks close in on rivals Connection for Pro League crown.
ttproleague.com.

Jason Marcano, Darren Mitchell and Kishun Seecharan all found the back of the net as two-time defending Digicel Pro League champions Central FC rebounded from last weekend's defeat at Ma Pau Stars to hammer Police FC 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Central (35 points), who have a game in hand against Defence Force, moved within two points of leaders W Connection (37 points) with just three regular games left in the 2016-17 league campaign.

Connection took charge of the two-team title chase last weekend with a 4-1 win over Defence Force while bitter Couva rivals Central slipped following their first league defeat of the season, 2-0 against the Stars.

But the Couva Sharks were prepared to bounce back from early on and grabbed the lead at the Larry Gomes Stadium through attacker Marcano who headed past Police goalkeeper Adrian Foncette in the 10th minute.

Following a volley of first half chances on either end, coach Dale Saunders' men finally got the desired 2-0 cushion on the stroke of half-time—Mitchell completing Jem Gordon's right side move by hitting into the far bottom corner of Foncette's net.

Mitchell was denied another by Foncette on the hour mark, but Central, who strengthened their attempt for a third consecutive league this season with the signing of former MLS defender Julius James and the return of winger Winchester, were already leading 3-0.

Foncette's barrier of blue shirts failed him again, and Seecharan completed a tap in from close up three minutes after the break off another Winchester cross from the right.

Foncette was lucky eight minutes from time when Marcano headed onto the crossbar, and a minute later substitute Johan Peltier struck wide off a well-placed Marcano cross as Central, who returns to the Malabar venue on Saturday against Point Fortin Civic, continued their dominance.

Police, meanwhile, struggling this season without injured striker Makesi Lewis, remain slumped in seventh position on 16 points.

Coach Richard Hood's pairing of attacking brothers Jameel and Kareem Perry up front failed to produce the goods for the Lawmen, who returns to the Larry Gomes Stadium on Sunday against sixth-positioned Club Sando.

Third-positioned San Juan Jabloteh (26 points), who were virtually knocked out of the race for a top-two finish by bottom-of-the-table Civic on Tuesday, will meet St. Ann's Rangers in the first game of a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium Stadium on Friday, followed by Ma Pau Stars against Defence Force.

Also on Friday, Morvant Caledonia United will welcome leaders Connection at the Hasely Crawford Stadium

Pro League title-chasing Connection continue winning ways.
ttproleague.com.

Morvant Caledonia United became the latest victim of title-chasing W Connection last night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training ground, which welcomed for the first time in its history, floodlights.

Second half goals by Jamal Charles, Jelani Peters and Hughtun Hector ensured Connection were comfortable 3-0 winners over Morvant Caledonia to celebrate a fifth straight win.

The result put the Digicel Pro League 2016-17 leaders at 40 points, five points more than rivals and second-positioned Central FC, who have two games in hand against Point Fortin Civic and Defence Force.

Central, champions of 2014-15 and 2015-16, will travel to the Larry Gomes Stadium today (Saturday) against Civic from 3:30pm before clashing with Defence Force on Tuesday from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Minister of Sport, Darryl Smith, and a brigade of other ministry officials including MP for Laventille West, Fitzgerald Hinds, and Sport Company (SPORTT) chairman Michael Phillips, and officials from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission were all on hand for the commissioning of the floodlights at the HCS training ground.

Then it was down to action on the slick surface due to earlier rainfall.

However no goals were produced in the first half which saw Connection’s Neil Benjamin Jr. guide his team’s best chance overbar, and on the other end lively Morvant Caledonia’s Guyanese teenager Kelsey Benjamin curl a brilliant effort just wide.

Connection, though, broke the floodgates in the second half with a quick-fire double as Caledonia’s earlier resolute defending seemed to wear off against the Savonetta Boys.

Charles, with a neat flick off the outside of his boot to beat goalkeeper Kern Caesar, celebrated his eight league goal to put Connection 1-0 in front from Dimitrie Apai’s cross in the 50th-minute.

Two minutes later Connection were celebrating another and it was 2-0 advantage. This time defender Peters heading in substitute Shaquille John’s cross from a free-kick which was misjudged by Caesar. Peters partying with his first goal of the season before he jets off to Canada for trial at Toronto FC’s B team later this month.

Hector made it 3-0 just two minutes onto the pitch. Andre Toussaint brilliantly held up play at the edge of the area before slipping a pass to Hector who darted into area and controlled the ball before hitting past a hapless Caesar.

Caesar had moments earlier produced a wonderful save to deny Charles a second on the night. The Grenada international forward was also denied five minutes from time when his powerful drive was cleared off the line by a Jelani Felix.

Caledonia, whose closest effort to a goal arrived in the 80th-minute when Dylon King hammered a strike onto the near upright, failed to end a winless slide—four of the last five ending in defeats. The Eastern Stallions are anchored ninth on the ten-team table on 11 points with just two games remaining in the shortened season.

San Juan Jabloteh and Ma Pau Stars, in a personal battle for a respectable third place finish—with Connection and Central virtually securing the top-two spots—both enjoyed wins in a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Jabloteh improved their position in third to 29 points after trashing St. Ann’s Rangers 5-0, but Ma Pau Stars kept alive their mathematical chance with a 2-0 win over Defence Force.

Veteran forwards Kerry Baptiste and Jason Scotland both netted in the second half for fourth-positioned Ma Pau, who are now on 25 points, while a second-half double from Nathan Lewis and a goal each from Jamal Gay, Keyon Edwards and Aaquil Campbell earned Jabloteh their comfortable three points.

Akeem Roach leads Sando to victory over Police; Central within striking distance of Connection.
ttproleague.com.

Akeem Roach put in a man-of-the-match performance with two goals and an assist to lead Club Sando to a 4-2 win over Police FC at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Sunday.

With his double, the 20-year-old Roach moved to the top of Digicel Pro League 2016-17 scorers' list with 10 goals—one more than Dimitrie Apai (W Connection), Jerrel Britto (Ma Pau Stars) and Devorn Jorsling (Defence Force).

While his team, Sando, moved up a spot into fifth with 21 points, sitting ahead of, in descending order, Defence Force (20 points) and Police (16 points) with two games left.

Defence Force, however, will meet second-positioned Central FC in a rescheduled clash from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday.

Central, the two-time defending champions, picked up three vital points on Saturday without kicking a ball after bottom-placed Point Fortin Civic arrived half hour after kick-off time at the Larry Gomes Stadium. Civic, who lost by default, cited traffic problems as the reason.

Central (38 points) now two points adrift of leaders W Connection (40 points) will look to a top-of-the-table return on Tuesday in chase of becoming the first team in the history of the Pro League to win the league title three times in a row.

Meanwhile for Sando, coached by Angus Eve, a mid-table finish this term will be an improvement from last season’s seventh-placed debut finish under previous coach Anthony Streete.

Roach has shouldered the role of centre-forward for Sando in this shortened season, following stints at Defence Force and Morvant Caledonia United in the position of winger and attacking midfielder, respectively.

The 20-year-old received much criticism during his debut call-up to the Trinidad and Tobago senior team for two friendlies against Nicaragua and for Caribbean play-offs to the Concacaf Gold Cup against Suriname and Haiti under previous coach Tom Saintfiet.

But his performance up front for Sando earned him applauds as he was substituted in the 85th minute.

Roach's willingness to constantly run at defences makes him a nightmare for his opponents, and Eve, an ex-T&T international and most-capped player, surely believes the player has what it takes remain part of the national set-up.

Roach equalised twice in the first half before setting up Kevon Piper to seal the 4-2 win against Police by the 65th-minute.

Roach netted past Police goalkeeper Adrian Foncette in the 19th and 31st minutes during a keenly contested first half which saw the Lawmen took the lead twice through Jameel Perry (16th minute) and Jibri Mc David (26th minute), who was denied a second by ‘keeper Stefan Berkeley late in the second half.

Coach Richard Hood’s Police were unlucky not go in at the break with the lead after a cracker from distance by substitute Kurdell Brathwaite cannoned off Berkeley’s cross-bar in the 42nd-minute.

But the match took a sour turn for the Lawmen when Kemuel Rivers converted a penalty for Sando in the 61st-minute after defender Dexter Alleyne was adjudged to have brought down Keron Cornwall in the area.

Then four minutes later Roach squared a pass to Piper, who hit past Foncette for what turned out the final item.

Sando could have added another with 19 minutes left, but midfielder Jayson Joseph spilled overbar with Roach in excellent support.

Late Marcano penalty puts 10-man Central in Pro League control with two games left
ttproleague.com

Central FC are two wins away from lifting a third consecutive Digicel Pro League crown after Tuesday night’s 2-1 come-from-behind win over Defence Force in a rescheduled fixture.

Ten-man Central needed a second-half own goal and a late Jason Marcano penalty to overcome a tough bunch in the sixth-positioned Defence Force.

Tenacity alone didn’t suffice. Had it not been for two crucial mistakes by Defence Force centre-back, Rodell Elcock, the headline could have, instead, favoured the Couva Sharks’ bitter town rivals, W Connection.

Central had trailed leaders Connection by two points before kick-off and looked to have surrendered it all after Hashim Arcia had given Defence Force the lead on 10 minutes and Couva Sharks’ winger Rundell Winchester seeing red just three minutes into the second half for dissent.

Arcia, for his eight league goal this term, had pounced on a mistake in the area by defender Keion Goodridge and rounded a hapless goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams to hit into the exposed net under a late challenge from Trinidad and Tobago 2001 Under-17 World Cup and former MLS defender Julius James.

Central avoided another when Sean De Silva cleared Aklie Edwards’ effort on the half-hour mark and less than a minute later Elcock struck wide of the far upright as Defence Force looked to increase the advantage.

But Central, who also saw a Keston George’s attempt cleared off the line by Curtis Gonzales minutes inside the second half, were back on level terms when Elcock’s powerful header--in an attempt to clear substitute Kishun Seecharan’s dangerous corner--hit the underside of goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke’s bar and entered the back of the Defence Force net in the 66th-minute.

It turned out a masterstroke by the Central coaching staff, which includes head coach Dale Saunders and technical coach Stern John, to toss in the former Defence Force winger two minutes earlier at the expense of De Silva.

Meanwhile, it was unfortunate for Clarke, who had kept his side in front with brilliant saves to deny Marcano and Mickaeel Jem Gordon, separated by the half.

Clarke also did well to keep out a point-blank effort by Marcano in the 77th-minute before Darren Mitchell spilled the rebound wide with the goal at his mercy.

However ten minutes later Mitchell, the Central captain, was brought down inside the area by Elcock, forcing referee Cecile Hinds to point to the spot. Marcano stepped up and wrong-side Clarke and clinch the Central winner.

“It’s always great when you can lead your team and get the points,” Mitchell told www.ttproleague.com after the game. “We started shaky and let in a soft goal. But at the break the coach reminded us that we are a champion team and that we needed to go out and get the victory.

“We knew we needed to win from tonight because of the trouble we were in [based on the points]. It was all about fighting for the victory and we got the three points. It was a bit tough playing with a man less but we dug deep as a team.”

The result returned Central to the top of the 2016-17 standings after two weeks with 41 points, trading places with Connection (40 points), while San Juan Jabloteh (29 points) and Ma Pau Stars (25 points), in third and fourth respectively, are left in pursuit of a respectable third-place finish.

Connection returns to action against Jabloteh on Friday and will look to keep alive their shot at the title while keeping the pressure on Central, before ending their league campaign against Ma Pau Stars.

Central, meanwhile, must next face the troublesome St. Ann’s Rangers on Saturday before taking on Jabloteh in their final league. (See upcoming fixtures and standings below)

Hector winner puts Connection in front, while Akeem Roach puts breathing space on scorers’ list.
ttproleague.com.

There will be no early title celebrations for Central FC when the two-time defending champions take on St Ann's Rangers today (Saturday) at the Larry Gomes Stadium in their penultimate match of the truncated 2016-17 Digicel Pro League.

This after W Connection returned to the top of the standings with a narrow 1-0 win over third-placed San Juan Jabloteh courtesy a second half goal by substitute and captain Hughtun Hector at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Friday night.

Connection, with one game left against Ma Pau Stars, are with 43 points, two points ahead of Central (41 points) who also have a game against San Juan Jabloteh (27 points).

The decisive Connection goal arrived on 56 minutes when Hector, who replaced Grenada international Jamal Charles immediately after the break, guided a half volley out of goalkeeper Javon Sample's reach and into the far netting.

It was a captain's goal in every sense. Hector's side desperately needed to find a way against a very physical Jabloteh side that seemed unwilling to let up.

A superb one-handed save by recent goalkeeper signing, Sample, 18 minutes into the contest kept out a curling Alvin Jones free-kick that was destined for the far top corner—it was Connection's best chance of a tense first half.

However, even with the former Central second choice goalie, Sample, at full stretch, Hector broke the deadlock after connecting to Neil Benjamin's improvised cross—which looped high inside the area—under challenge from defender Akeem Benjamin.

Twelve minutes later the 32-year-old Hector executed a spectacular volley off a right side Jones cross, but a magnificent Sample was equal to the test, not once, but twice after also denying the midfielder on the quick rebound.

Hector, needless to say, had done enough when his side most needed with his seventh league goal this season.

Earlier at the Couva venue, Akeem Roach continued his rich form by scored twice to help Club Sando hold off bottom-placed Point Fortin Civic 3-2 in a feisty affair.

Roach stretched his lead at the top of this season's league scorers' list—three goals ahead of the pack—with 14 goals while his side improved their fifth position with 24 points, one less than fourth-positioned Ma Pau who face Morvant Caledonia United on Sunday from 3:30pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Roach, a 20-year-old recent Trinidad and Tobago Men’s Senior Team call-up, snatched the winner just over the hour mark after the scores were tied at two-all at the break.

Kevon Piper opened the scoring in the 23rd-minute, hitting off the underside of the bar to beat Civic goalkeeper Miles Goodman and give Sando a 1-0 lead after a left side Akeem Humphrey cross strolled freely across the six-yard area.

Then two minutes later, with new T&T national team coach Dennis Lawrence looking on from the stands, Roach unleashed a rocket from 25-yards out that Goodman was no match for to put Sando 2-0 ahead.

Civic, however, pulled a goal back by the 33rd minute when Akeem Redhead's fierce angled strike deflected off defender Nichcolas Thomas and into the back of goalkeeper Kelvin Henry's net.

Teenagers Nion Lammy and Darnell Hospedales then combined to level Civic 2-2 at the stroke of half-time with the latter guiding squared pass onto the underside of the bar before it sunk into the back of the Sando goal.

Sando had paid miserably for a couple missed chances in the first half which included Roach anxiously hitting over bar on the half-hour mark.

Roach also put another effort over on the hour mark off substitute Shaquille Holder's hard worked cross.

But the Sando hitman redeemed himself in the 65th-minute by finding the 3-2 winner with a clinical finish into the bottom corner of Goodman's net after controlling a Nical Stephens cross off his chest.

Roach, who is followed by Defence Force's Devorn Jorsling, Ma Pau Stars' Jerrel Britto and Connection's Dimitrie Apai (9 goals) on the scorers’ list, played provider in the final minute of regulation time by putting substitute Holder through against Goodman, but the winger struck wide on the rebound after his tame initial attempt was kept out at the goalmouth.

Jorsling, a multiple-time former Golden Boot winner, and his sixth-positioned Defence Force (20 points) side will travel to Mannie Ramjohn Stadium today (Saturday) against Police FC in a clash of the armed forces from 3:30pm.

Defence Force, like the five teams above them, have already secured places in the main draw (quarter-final round) of this season’s season-ending Digicel Pro Bowl knockout tournament.

Meanwhile, in descending order, Police (16 points), Rangers (16 points), Morvant Caledonia (11 points) and Civic (6 points), must contest the Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier round on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training ground due to their unavoidably bottom-four finish after Round Two Match Day Eight in the Pro League.

Two missed penalties but Seecharan and Mitchell double up as history seeking Central trash Rangers.
ttproleague.com.

Central FC demonstrated on Saturday that they are deserving of champions status once more—a feat that will make them the first team in the history of the Pro League to win the league three consecutive times.

The Couva Sharks returned to the top of the Digicel Pro League 2016-17 standings with one game day left and a point ahead of rivals W Connection after showing all teeth and bite in a 6-0 romp against 10-man St. Ann’s Rangers.

Kishun Seecharan scored on either side of the break and Darren Mitchell twice in the second half while Jason Marcano and Mickaeel Jem Gordon had a goal each in a display of domination by coach Dale Saunders side.

But it can turn into a sour end for Central (44 points) if they were to lose against third-positioned San Juan Jabloteh (29 points) in their final league game of the truncated season and Connection (43 points) were to win against Ma Pau Stars.

However, judging from their biggest win this term at this stage of the league competition and against a side that had not conceded such a loss in all of this season, the Sharks seem equipped to the task ahead, although second-positioned Connection—on a seven-game winning streak—are biting at their tails.

The 20-year-old Seecharan, who started in place of suspended winger Rundell Winchester, handed the Sharks the lead on 12 minute with a fine left-footed strike beyond Rangers goalie Cleon John and into the back of the net from 18 yards out. It was from a perfectly calibrated pass over the top from Marcano that allowed Seecharan to break the offside trap and enter the area with John at his mercy.

Rangers, although being without the availability of teenagers Rushawn Murphy, Kathon St. Hillaire, Micah Lansiquot and most notably Josh Toussaint who are all currently in a training camp in Columbia with the Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 squad in preparation for upcoming Concacaf final round qualifiers to the Under-20 World Cup, managed to head into the break with the narrow deficit thanks to some fine goalkeeping by John.

But the St. Ann’s club (16 points) crumbled to their ninth defeat in the second half with John helpless between the uprights to remain eighth on the standings, three points below Police FC (19 points) who simultaneously defeated Defence Force (20 points) 3-1 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Seecharan made it 2-0, completing his double in the 63rd-minute with a thunderous left-footed strike into the top corner of John’s net. “Block the left foot! Block the left foot!” John barked John at his defenders as Seecharan made his way across the top of the box from the right. But a quick exchange and Seecharan was free to fire beyond the Rangers goalie.

Seecharan was offered a chance to complete his first professional hat trick five minutes later, but anxiously skied his attempt over the bar from the penalty spot after former Central attacker Samuel Delice was ruled guilty of dragging down Mitchell inside the area. It was the second penalty miss by Central on the afternoon after Marcano’s attempt from the spot on 20 minutes was kept out by John following defender Richard Williams foul on Kevon Villaroel in the box.

Delice, who Rangers coach Anthony Streete had heavily depended on up front, had flared up at referee Crystal Sobers’ decision to point to the spot in the latter instance and a yellow card quickly turned into the red after he angrily kicked away the ball which flew in her direction.

Central, from then onwards, took full dominance and added four more goals to Rangers’ miseries.

Marcano redeemed himself with a perfectly executed finish into the far bottom corner of John’s net fifteen minutes from time, before solo goals by Tobagonians Gordon and Mitchell from close up in the 79th and 80th minutes, respectively.

Mitchell, the Central captain, then fittingly completed rout in stoppage-time with a cool finish from just inside the six-yard area after a Villaroal played in a low dangerous cross.

The action continues today (Sunday) with Morvant Caledonia United facing Ma Pau Stars from 3:30pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Central FC demonstrated on Saturday that they are deserving of champions status once more—a feat that will make them the first team in the history of the Pro League to win the league three consecutive times.

Deeks, Tallman or anyone who familiar with T&T league history, can this be true?

I thought Defence Force won the league 3 consecutive times in 95, 96 & 97?

The league was semi professional from 1996. Before that it was essentially amateur with the exception of Defence Force, Police etc
