Police, Rangers, M’vant Caledonia and Civic in Digicel Pro Bowl qualifiers.
ttproleague.com.

Police FC, St. Ann’s Rangers, Courts Morvant Caledonia United and Point Fortin Civic will contest the qualifying round of the season-culminating Digicel Pro Bowl due to their bottom four placements, in descending order, in the Digicel Pro League after Round Two Match Day Eight.

Police, who whipped Defence Force 3-1 on Saturday, maintained seventh-position and will face cellar-placed Civic in qualifier one from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday.

Two hours later at the Couva venue, eight-placed St. Ann’s Rangers, coming off Saturday’s 6-0 mauling by Central, will clash with ninth-positioned Morvant Caledonia with the winners advancing into the main draw (quarter-finals) in which matchups will be determined on Wednesday in a seeded draw.

Caledonia too, were in losers’ row over the weekend. The Morvant side conceded first half goals to go down 2-0 against fourth-positioned Ma Pau Stars on Sunday at the Larry Gomes Stadium despite an improved display in a second period that saw both sides appealing for a penalty but unable to force referee Gyasi Mc Donald to point to the spot.

Former Europe-based forward and Trinidad and Tobago 2006 World Cup player Jason Scotlant netted his eight league goal for Ma Pau on 25 minutes before an own goal cushioned made it 2 nil.

The win improved Ma Pau's fourth position on 28 points—one point behind third-placed San Juan Jabloteh—ahead of their final league game of the season against second-positioned W Connection (43 points) next weekend, while Jabloteh are against league leaders and two-time defending champions Central FC (44 points) in their final game.

Che Benny stars in incredible Rangers comeback against Sando.
ttproleague.com.

Teenager Che Benny scored his first top flight goals, netting twice after the break, as St. Ann's Rangers overturned a 3-nil deficit to hold rivals Club Sando 3-3 in their 18th and final Digicel Pro League match of the truncated 2016-17 season.

It was the first of two tied results at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on Friday night that included Courts Morvant Caledonia United holding Police FC to a 1-1 draw.

Sando, who like Rangers had already secured an improved finish from last season, albeit fifth and seventh positions, respectively, had looked in control for victory after leading 3-0.

Akeem Roach, who is in the lead for this season’s Golden Boot, was involved in all three Sando goals but missed an excellent scoring chance in the 18th minute to improve his league tally of 12 goals.

Joel Kevin Lewis, in a rare start this season, put Sando ahead by the third minute when he hooked in a rebound after goalkeeper Christopher Biggette had kept out a Roach attempt off Akeem Humphrey’s cross.

Lewis failed to double his tally on 10 minutes, but two minutes later Sando were celebrating another after a through pass by Roach was met by Humphrey, who raced into the area before slipping a low shot past Biggette.

Shaquille Holder later fired in a dominant Sando’s third item ten minutes after the break after he was picked out by a squared Roach pass inside the area.

However in an incredible turn of the tide, Che Benny and co., including the second half introduction of Jomoul Francois, Rangers rallied to an incredible comeback draw.

Benny, a 16-year-old Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 footballer and St. Anthony College attacker, reduced the deficit 1-3 in the 63rd-minute when he slapped home a rebound from the centre of the area.

Jameel Antoine then converted a penalty in the 82nd-minute to further reduce the deficit 2-3 after Francois was brought down in the box by Nical Stephens. Antoine gave goalkeeper Kelvin Henry no chance with his effort from the spot hitting the inside of the upright before the ball entered the opposite side of the netting.

Celebrating a victory finally flew out the window for Sando when the pint-sized Benny slotted into the bottom corner of Henry’s goal to put the scores at 3-3 five minutes from time after he was picked out by a low Francois cross.

Later, Jameel Perry fired Police – fresh off Tuesday's 9-0 Digicel Pro Bowl qualifier win over Civic – ahead in the first minute of play with a 16-yard laser that beat goalkeeper Marvin Phillip into the bottom right corner.

But an equally brilliant drive by Lester Joseph, to beat goalkeeper Adrian Foncette on 64 minutes, pulled Morvant Caledonia level in a game of pride for the Eastern Stallions, who had already finished second from bottom of the standings.

Police, however, who face W Connection on Wednesday in the Pro Bowl quarter-finals, wasted a match-winning chance twelve minutes from time when Kadeem Riley spilled at the goalmouth with Phillip at his mercy.

With the point, Police temporarily hurdled Defence Force for sixth position by goal-difference on the night, but are likely to finish below the Army/Coast Guard combination who were leading table-propping Point Fortin Civc 6-0 on Saturday before play was abandoned due to lights failure with 20 minutes left at the Mahaica Oval on Saturday.

Defence Force head coach Marvin Gordon rested an injured Devorn Jorsling for Thursday’s Pro Bowl quarter-final clash with San Juan Jabloteh but had no problems finding the back of the net against a side that were flattened in midweek.

Jerwyn Balthazar, Hashim Arcia and former Civic forward Jamille Boatswain each scored twice for Defence Force.

Arcia and Boatswain joins Police forward Jameel Perry on 10 league goals and with 20 minutes left to compete against Civic, the duo are still within a shot at the Golden Boot.

But stiff competition for the Golden Boot will continue today (Sunday) as Dimitrie Apai (9 goals) and Jamal Charles and Jason Scotland (8 goals) are all expected in action at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

Apai and Charles should feature for W Connection who face Scotland’s Ma Pau Stars from 3:30pm. Connection are still within a chance of the league title, sitting one point behind two-time defending champions and leaders Central FC, who simultaneously face San Juan Jabloteh at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Central hoists Pro League crown, again; Couva Sharks complete historic three-peat.
ttproleague.com.

Central FC, the club less than five years old, have won an unprecedented third successive Digicel Pro League after edging San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 on Sunday, pipping Couva rivals W Connection to the crown for a second time in three seasons.

Central had gone into their final league game with a one-point advantage over second-positioned Connection, and got the decisive item through a diving header from Tobagonian winger Rundell Winchester five minutes from the half at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

With the win, Central (47 points), league champions of 2014/15 and 2015/16, secured the 2016/17 title to etch themselves into the history books of the 18-year-old Pro League by becoming the first team to win the three-peat.

Six-time former league winners Connection (46 points), who had been incredible in their efforts all season, defeated Ma Pau Stars 2-0 for their seventh straight league win, but had to settle for second place.

Jamal Charles opened the scoring for Connection with a header on 53 minutes before Hughtun Hector completed the win for coach Stuart Charles Fevrier's men ten minutes from time at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Ma Pau finished fourth (28 points), one spot behind Jabloteh (29 points), last season's runners-up, who had given Central a few scares.

“We are accustomed to being in these types of positions,” said Central FC captain Darren Mitchell. “We knew we had to work extra hard today. We knew Jabloteh were coming for a victory (to secure third spot) but we got the result in the end.

“[Now] it’s a great feeling—first time history in the Pro League—to be champions for a third straight time.”

Mitchell had provided the left side cross that fellow Tobagonian Winchester dived in at the back post to bury the ball past former Central second-choice goalie Javon Sample for what turned out the winner.

Sample wasn’t the only former Couva Shark in the Jabloteh starting line-up that included defender Akeem Benjamin.

But it was another defender, Josiah Trimmingham, who had Jabloteh’s best chances—first heading just wide off a Nathan Lewis corner on six minutes then hitting straight at goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams three minutes after the break when a free kick was cleared into his path at the goalmouth.

"We wanted to cement the third position and we wanted to spoil the (Central) party," said Jabloteh forward Jamal Gay. "But congratulations to Central FC for [accomplishing] the three-peat. I think they deserve it because they hold of a very strong Jabloteh squad and got the result."

Gay had not lack motivation but hadn’t received the needed support from new strike partner Jairo Lombardo before the under-21 Panamanian was replaced by Tyrone Charles after the break, before another newcomer Vernon Mills replaced the legs of Keyon Edwards just before the hour mark.

Charles, 20 minutes on, missed out on the equaliser when he struck wide from 16 yards out after meeting a through-pass by Jamaican Keithy Simpson, who was later replaced by Aaquil Campbell.

“It was always about believing right down to the end,” said a teary-eyed Central FC head coach, Dale Saunders afterwards. “We got the job done. A great… great feeling. Glory to God the almighty.

“And, I owe it to the players and staff. Everybody deserve this [title]. We always had what it takes to be champions [again] and we showed just that.”

It was the celebrating moment for Saunders at the end of his first full season in charge of the Couva Sharks. Last season Saunders took over from former coach Ross Russell midway through the season, a move that saw a turnaround in Central and the successful defence of their league and Caribbean crowns.

Saunders, who previously served as assistant coach to former Central coaches Zoran Vranes, Terry Fenwick and Russell, has been assisted this season by former Trinidad and Tobago internationals and World Cup 2006 Soca Warriors, Stern John and Brent Sancho, the club’s managing director.

“Opportunities in life, you have to take with both hands. And you can see we got the job done at the end of the day,” ended Saunders.

Central’s Mitchell bagged the most league goals for his side this term with 8, four goals shy of Golden Boot leader Akeem Roach (12 goals) of Club Sando (25 points), who finished fifth and above, in descending order, Police FC, Defence Force, St. Ann’s Rangers, Morvant Caledonia United and Point Fortin Civic. (See full table below)

Defence Force forwards Hashim Arcia and Jamille Boatswain both have 10 goals after each, along with Jerwyn Balthazar, scoring twice in a 6-0 lead over Civic on Saturday. And, with 20 minutes of play outstanding against Point Fortin side, after lights failure abandoned play at the Mahaica Oval, the duo still stands within range of the Golden Boot.

Central, meanwhile, won’t have much celebrating with this week’s quarter-final round of the season-ending Digicel Pro Bowl – a title the Couva Sharks captured in 2015 – up next.

Central must take on Rangers on Wednesday from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium before W Connection tackle Police from 8pm at the same venue.

Quarter-final action continues on Thursday with Ma Pau Stars against Club Sando from 6pm again at the Ato Boldon Stadium before Jabloteh and Defence Force lock horns from 8pm.

Champagne Central: Couva Sharks enter Pro League history books with three-peat.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Back to back to back. Central FC set down a new marker in the 17 year history of the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League today, as they became the first time to win three successive league titles.

The “Couva Sharks” dropped just seven points whole season and lost only once. And, against a typically stubborn San Juan Jabloteh team at the Ato Boldon Stadium this afternoon, coach Dale Saunders’ troops again found a way to win.

Rundell Winchester’s 41st minute item was the game’s only goal, as Central ground out a 1-0 win. It meant an unprecedented third straight league title—all worth TT$1 million each.

“This season was more special [than my first Pro League title last year] because it was back to back,” Central coach Dale Saunders told Wired868. “I want to give credit to my backroom staff, the management and the players because they worked really hard for this title.”

There were only around 400 spectators in Couva to witness the occasion. This has been another tough year for the local top flight competition which suffered from financial instability off the field and a shortage of entertainment on it.

But there was still something to appreciate in Central’s dogged consistency over the 18-match season.

Jabloteh gave it a good go today with giant forward Jamal Gay and midfield captain Damian Williams particularly keen to influence the result. But Central were resolute as always while veteran central defender Julius James—who was a mid-season transfer acquisition—was flawless at the back.

It was enough to hold off a remarkable surge by DIRECTV W Connection who won their last seven successive matches—excluding today’s affair—but still finished one point behind behind Central, despite scoring the most goals (50) and conceding the fewest (13) of any top flight team.

Connection downed Ma Pau Stars 2-0 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella this afternoon—with second half strikes by Grenadian Jamal Charles and skipper Hughtun Hector—but were powerless to stop Central’s coronation.

The fourth placed Ma Pau, who were without coach Ross Russell due to commitments with the National Under-20 team, offered little danger to Julani Archibald in the Connection goal and seemed to focus more on containing their opponents as opposed to scoring themselves.

Veteran striker Jason Scotland, who has a UEFA B coaching license, headed the technical staff today while the evergreen Kerry Baptiste led the forward line instead. But, despite countless saves from custodian Glenroy Samuel, the Stars could not deny the “Savonetta Boys” the three points at stake.

It was not enough for the million dollar first prize, though.

“First of all I would like to congratulate Central FC on their success in winning the league for a third season straight,” said Connection coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier. “I think that’s very, very good by any standard in any league anywhere. And I want to congratulate them for that.

“In terms of us, I want to congratulate my players for the effort they put in, especially in the last round. Because when the round started we were seven points behind Central and many persons felt that the league was over. But we came back and won all eight games in the last round [after losing to Central]…

“It was unfortunate that we were not able to be crowned champions after having the best offensive and defensive record. But that’s football. We have to put the league behind us now and concentrate on the Pro Bowl because that’s the last competition for the season.”

Central only had eyes for the giant Pro League trophy, which was brought to the venue by Pro League administrative manager, Julia Baptiste.

But Jabloteh, who kicked off with ex-Central title winners Javon Sample and Akeem Benjamin in their squads, did not make it easy. Even though the Sharks always seemed just a tad more decisive.

Central should have opened the scoring in the 24th minute, as forward Yohan Peltier stripped opposing defender Josiah Trimmingham but, just inside the Jabloteh box, he opted to pass rather than shoot and his strike partner, Jason Marcano, was closed down by Jabloteh defender Jevon Morris.

There was no stopping Winchester though, four minutes before the interval, as he crept away from his marker, Benjamin, for a free header at the back post off a Darren Mitchell cross.

It was Winchester’s first goal this season, after the Tobago-born attacker rejoined the squad last month. On his last outing, he was ejected by referee Crystal Sobers after losing his head against Defence Force and speaking out of turn. But this was much better use of his cabeza.

There was a Jabloteh shout for a penalty within seconds, as Leston Paul’s attempted clearance came off his own hand. But referee Keilon Bacchus was unconvinced.

Three minutes into the second half, there was the first genuine scare for Central as their defence failed to deal with a Tyrone Charles cross and the ball ricocheted to Trimmingham with a one on one from eight yards.

The former National Under-20 defender hit straight to Williams.

Try as they might, Jabloteh could get no closer to a result. And it is worth noting that Williams was rarely threatened in goal for Central.

Credit James for a tough, perceptive display in central defence against an inspired Gay. Three years ago, Yohance Marshall played himself into international contention with a sterling showing for the Sharks. James, who spent four seasons in the US Major League Soccer (MLS), might easily have done the same.

But today was about the team started from scratch by managing director Brent Sancho and operations director Kevin Harrison, in mid-2012, that became serial winners.

Saunders was assistant to former coaches Zoran Vranes and Terry Fenwick when Central won their first league title in 2014/15. And, as boss, he managed to maintain their tempo and tactical flexibility.

“There is not a team in the Pro League that trains as hard as us,” said Saunders. “We work hard on the training ground, day in [and] day out and the players bought into it. We just made hard work a part of [what we do].

“Winning is a habit at Central FC.”

Central’s consistency and drive under Saunders is particularly remarkable considering the regular turnover of playing staff, as they had to do without talented employees like Marcus Joseph, Andre Ettienne, Nathaniel Garcia and Kaydion Gabriel for various reasons over the course of the six month season.

But, with assistant coach Stern John conspicuously close by his side, Saunders always found the right answer—as Central continued to rack up points whether it was with left back Kevon Villaroel in central defence or midfielder Nathaniel “Spanish” Garcia or forward Jem Gordon at full back.

“No matter what players we put on the park, we always get a result because we have a philosophy within the club,” said Saunders, who credited Sancho’s eye for talent. “Whoever comes in, comes with a certain attitude to get the job done.”

No matter the combination of the starting team, Marcano, Paul, Williams and, above all, the tireless captain, Mitchell, were always at the heart of everything constructive for the Couva-based team.

The result was the most dominant force in Pro League history.

P  W  D  L  F  A  Pts
Central FC  18  15  2  1  41  14  47
W Connection  18  15  1  2  50  13  46
San Juan Jabloteh  18  9  2  7  32  23  29

The gap in the table standing between the top two(Central/Connection)  and the rest is kind of wide.

Pro League continues to lead the way.
ttproleague.com.

Dexter Skeene, chief executive officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League, stands confident that the PL will maintain its status as the best league in the country in 2017 and beyond, and by extension the Caribbean.

Skeene said the just concluded 2016-17 PL season has made strides even in economic uncertainty, and will continue to grow with the new 2017 season reverting to the previous April to December format to accomplish sporting and financial objectives.

“The competitiveness of the league continues to improve every season,” said Skeene. “On the final day of the league competition we saw [eventual champions] Central and [runners-up] W Connection battling to the wire for the crown. Also, near the end we had four teams battling for third, which was secured by San Juan Jabloteh.”

The PL boss congratulated two-time Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship holders Central FC on their historic Digicel Pro League three-peat, and also that of Defence Force’s knockout-double with the First Citizens Cup and Digicel Pro Bowl titles, as well as the on-field improvements by clubs such as St. Ann’s Rangers and Club Sando.

“We also wish Central every success at this year’s Caribbean Club Championship, and that they continue to fly the Trinidad and Tobago flag and serve the country and the Pro League with distinction and that they (Central) along with San Juan Jabloteh qualify for next season’s Concacaf Champions League.”

Central and San Juan Jabloteh, league champions and runners-up respectively in 2015-16, will contest the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship--the Caribbean's qualifier tournament to the Concacaf Champions League. Jabloteh must compete from the first round in March while Central, as defending champions, received a bye to the final round in May.

Skeene admitted that the PL, only fifteen seasons old, is still a long way from becoming self-sufficient, but with the continued support of the Trinidad and Tobago Government and the advent of upgrading community grounds, the League is on the path towards self-sustainability.

“We again thank the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Minister of Sport Darryl Smith for their continuous support for the Pro League and subvention to the League and clubs,” stated Skeene, a former Trinidad and Tobago national player and coach.

“The Minister understand the value of professional football in that it provides players for the national level, to be able to qualify for a World Cup. It is a unique animal unlike any other entity.”

Last September, during the launch of the 2016-17 season, Skeene referenced the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS), which he said in its early years experienced financial and operational struggles despite millions of dollars pumped in by wealthy owners Lamar Hunt of Dallas Cowboys, Phillip Anschutz and Bob Kraft. He said the MLS had lost millions of dollars, while teams played in mostly empty American football stadiums back then. But today, with soccer-specific venues, average MLS attendance exceeds that of the National Hockey League (NHL) and National Basketball Association (NBA). The MLS has also secured TV deals and is now profitable.

“The catalyst for investment, they state, came with the advent of investment in soccer-specific stadia throughout the U.S. in soccer-mad cities,” said Skeene back then. “None of these projects were mega constructions so they were not mega risks.”

Skeene’s notion was put to test during the just concluded season.

Through the support of the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith and the implementation arm of the Ministry of Sport, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) along with its facilities manager Anthony Blake, the Park Street Recreation Ground in Morvant was put to the test and the response was astounding, drawing massive crowds in three games over a five-week period. However, with the playing surface due for a much needed upgrade, remaining home games of Morvant Caledonia United had to be scheduled at the Ato Boldon, Hasely Crawford and Larry Gomes stadia.

“The Minister of Sport Darryl Smith is working with the League to upgrade grounds on a phased basis in the communities represented,” said Skeene this week. “…to give the clubs a revenue earning asset which will enable them to roll out proper marketing strategies to maximise their revenue line items such as sponsorship, gate receipts, merchandising and player transfers.”

The PL, the only professional league in the Caribbean, continues to attract the best local players as well as some of the region’s rising talents such as W Connection’s Dimitri Apai (Suriname), Jamal Charles (Grenada) and Briel Thomas (Dominica), and San Juan Jabloteh’s Fabien Reid (Jamaica) among others.

PL clubs also continue to attract interest in the North and Central America, Europe and Asia markets with players such as W Connection’s Jomal Williams and Shahdon Winchester (Murciélagos / Mexico), Ma Pau Stars’ Anthony Wolfe (Churchill Brothers / India) and Jerrel Britto (Honduras Progreso / Honduras), San Juan Jabloteh’s Willis Plaza (East Bengal / India), Central FC’s Nicholas Dillon (K Patro Maasmechelen / Belgium) and San Juan Jabloteh’s Keston Julien (AS Trenčín / Slovakia) all making moves abroad during the last season.

Skeene reminded, “The League is a limited liability company, which each club is a part of, and just like any other industry if one club fails it doesn’t mean that the league fails. In the past clubs such as Starworld Strikers and Tobago United left, but that doesn’t mean the League has failed.”

The new 2017 season (April – December) will boast a full calendar, including the return of one of the most anticipated knockouts, which allows the best Super League—T&T’s second tier league—sides to test themselves against their Pro League counterparts in the annual Classic, which in its eleven editions has never produced champions outside the of the PL.

But beginning in March, the League will kick off its Flow Youth Pro League season 2017, which over a five-month period, will see action in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 divisions—where stars are born.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

If the govt making the league go by assisting almost all teams, pay/sponsor 2 teams, provide fields ( don't think the league or clubs own any ), if they are not handing out the monetary prizes, what really make it a pro league and best in the country ? No wonder our footballers still operate with an underdeveloped sports mentality. They probably think our town's house league crew is the most professional in the world, organizing games for over 200 teams(gender, ages), in over 20 groups,as well as support 24 intercity teams, and all as volunteers. Seems the only professionals in the PL is the PL staff and direct relations, and the club administrators if they can manage to afford a staff at all...Btw.. wha bout the backseat payment fiasco with the next setta pros ? Or was it a banana in the tailpipe , everybody musbe forget

add:
eg of Online Football reporting with daily updates (this is just the winter session)
http://www.tsisports.ca/tsi/index.aspx
http://soccerpointeclaire.com/

Lets start with organization.

I have requested info from tsi for design of a similar setup for the TTFA (which will include all local football leagues) . The amount of leagues across the country will pale in comparison to the amount of leagues here. Will pass the info to Flex once received. All leagues should be managed and re-portable to the TTFA. So as far as the Pro League issues are concerned, I think TTFA, should be held responsible, imo. Prize money not distributed across 3 years is ridiculous.

With all the back payments that the TTFA has, I don't see how they go pay million dollar prize. Unless Toyata and them demand that the prize money MUST go to the winners.

no they don't pay, just ensure that all leagues are following proper procedures and organization to guarantee a professional product and outcome. i.e. thru audits and controls.. etc if they don't, cease and desist their operations, it can't be good for tax payers, fans nor players, or reflective of TT football, including the National team, if the football product is substandard. Especially, the one and only Pro league.
