Fyzabad kicks off girls SSFL title defence
T&T Guardian

Fyzabad Secondary, the National and South Zone Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League title-holders, will begin defence of its zonal title today when it host Point Fortin East at Fyzabad from 3 pm.

Last season, Fyzabad Secondary coached by calypsonian Bryan London as well as former national captain Anthony Rougier and featuring SSFL “Girls Player of the Year” Ray-Ann Montano, goalkeeper Shamika Rocastle, Tamara Johnson, Jahra Thomas, Krystal Preddie, Collette Morgan, Renique Primus, and Kader Louison, all “All Star” team selectees dominated the zonal and national competitions, capturing the National Coca-Cola title as well and will be fancied to repeat.

However, Montano, Rocastle, Preddie and Thomas are among seven members of the team who have moved on, leaving Johnson, Morgan, Primus and Louison to form the core of this year’s team with Rougier in charge of coaching duties.

In the other matches in the South Zone, San Fernando East travels to Pleasantville Secondary  while St Joseph Convent (San Fernando) is on a bye.

Baptiste keeps Shiva Boys perfect

Baptiste keeps Shiva Boys perfect
Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Substitute Tyrell Baptiste scored the lone goal as Shiva Boys Hindu College edged St Benedict’s College 1-0 to maintain its 100 per cent winning record in the 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division yesterday.

Following a 3-1 win over another South Zone rival, Presentation College of San Fernando to kick off the season on Wednesday, Shiva Boys was out to pick up a second straight win at its home base, Irwin Park Savannah, Siparia .

However, they were made to work hard for all three points which came when Baptiste who replaced winger Quinn Rodney scored in the 73rd minute against Presentation College which was coming off a 2-0 loss to Fyzabad Secondary.

The win carried Shiva Boys to maximum six points, two clear of Fyzabad Secondary and Trinity College Moka. Fyzabad rallied from 0-2 down at home to earn a 2-2 draw with St Augustine Secondary.

St Augustine looked on course for its first win of the season when Rahim Borde (41st) and Anthony Samuel (44th) netted just before the half for a 2-0 lead. However, the host lifted their game in the second period and cut the lead in half in the 50th minute through Shaquille Louison, while Ken Bhola fired in the equaliser in the 78th.

With two minutes left in the ill-tempered which featured six yellow-cards, four for the visitors, St Augustine was reduced to ten men when Nyicoaba James was red carded, but in the end the “Green Machine” held on for an important away point, its second of the season.

Up at Trinity College Grounds, Moka Maraval, the host got goals from Isaiah Mc Lean and Saleem Henry to turn back San Juan North 2-1

At Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre, Jarod Gordon scored in the 18th minute to earn Presentation College of San Fernando, a 1-0 win over visitors Fatima College to join St Anthony’s College in third on three points, after the latter’s home match with North Zone rivals East Mucurapo at St Anthony’s Morne Cocoa Road, Westmoorings was postponed due to a water-logged field.

In the other matches yesterday, Signal Hill was held goalless at home by Queen’s Royal College, while St Mary’s College also had to settle for a point in a 1-1 home draw with Pleasantville Secondary.

Champ Fyzabad mauls Pt Fortin 8-nil.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

A double from three different players Bouanna Osbourne, Kadean Louison and Abishai Guy helped the National and South Zone Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League title-holders, Fyzabad Secondary, get its season off in dominating fashion defeating Point Fortin East, 8-0 at home yesterday.

Collette Morgan, one of last year’s leading players, and Shanaqua Lewis, also netted a goal each in the one-sided affair.

Osbourne opened the scoring for the Fyzabad team, which is coached by former national player Anthony Rougier, in the 17th minute.

Two minutes later Lewis got her name on the scoreboard in the 19th and then Louison joined them a minute later, quickly pushing their team to a 3-0 advantage after only 20 minutes.

In the 38th minute, Guy scored the first of her pair before Osbourne completed her double in 45th, to see their team close the first half leading, 5-0.

On the resumption, Point Fortin’s defence did well in holding off the Fyzabad attack until Guy broke through to put the ball in the back of the net in the 53rd minute. Morgan got in on the action just a minute later and it seemed there was no holding back Fyzabad, who took full advantage of playing at home.

Louison produced the final item in the 74th to give the Fyzabad lasses, a boost to begin the season.

In the other match played in the South Zone, San Fernando East was beaten 5-0 by hosts Pleasantville Secondary.

In the North Zone, Shauna Lee Govia slammed in five goals for newly promoted Tranquillity Government Secondary to upset St Joseph Convent (PoS) 7-2 at St Joseph Convent ground in St Clair.

The match in the zone between St Francois and Diego Martin Central which was scheduled to play yesterday was postponed until tomorrow at the St Francois Ground at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Over in Tobago, Signal Hill whipped Speyside, 16-1 thanks to five goals from Asha James, four from Gamelia Waldron, Abiela Adams added three, Jelice Alexander netted a double while their teammates Verisha Bristol and Tishai Cupid scored a goal each.

Raylene Kerr produced the lone item for Speyside.

Title-holder Scarborough Secondary completed a 7-1 crushing of Pentecostal Light and Life and Mason Hall sealed a 3-2 victory over Bishop’s High.

There are changes to this week’s matches in both boys and girls divisions due to the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 Men’s qualifying tournament to be held in T&T from Friday to September 25.

The adjustments made to the Championship division fixtures are that all boys matches scheduled for Friday will be played on Thursday instead at the same time and venues; all boys matches scheduled for September 20 will be played on September 19 at the same time and venues; all girls Championship matches scheduled for Sunday and the Diego Martin Central versus Bishop’s PoS scheduled for Thursday will be re-scheduled to a date to be advised.

San Juan stops Shiva Boys.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Isaiah Alexander of Trinity College, Moka was the toast of his team-mates yesterday, as his lone goal earned a 1-0 win over Queen’s Royal College, St Clair.

The win moved Trinity to the top of the 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division with seven points.

The victory was its second on the trot after edging San Juan North, 2-1 on Saturday.

The trio of Shiva Boys Hindu College, St Anthony’s College and Presentation College of San Fernando are all on six points.

At San Juan North Secondary Ground, Bourg Mulatresse, the host got a second-half double from Jerome Boyce to cancel out Shiva Boys’ Tyrell Emmanuel 42nd minute strike in a 2-1 win.

Emmanuel along with team-mate Quinn Rodney were expected to be part of the national Under-20 team which left for Guyana yesterday for a pre-Caribbean Football Union tournament camp, but for various reasons the duo remained with their school team while goalkeeper Denzil Smith made the journey.

At Warren Street, St Anthony’s got a goal each from Derron John and Haile Beckles, a penalty to earn a similar come-from-behind 2-1 win over host St Augustine, while Jordon Riley’s 55th strike earned Presentation College a 1-0 win over St Benedict’s College.

Defending champions, Naparima got their first win of the campaign thanks to Lee Isaiah’s 89th strike to get past Fyzabad 2-1 while Fatima blanked St Mary’s 2-0 and Signal Hill slipped past East Mucurapo for their first wins as well. (NS)

Lee treble sink Fatima in SSFL
By Sean Taylor (T&T Express)

Naparima College found their stride as they cruised to a 3-1 win against Fatima College, to continue their unbeaten run in the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday.

A second-half hattrick from Isaiah Lee was enough for the two-time reigning Premier Division champions, as they carved the Fatima defence in two on the counter attack throughout the second half.

Wide forward Stephon Marcano was able to hit the target for Fatima moments before the final whistle.

The match was played as if it were a training ground exercise in the first half, with both teams content to move the ball around without any penetration up front.

After the break however, as the visitors took the lead when lone forward Isaiah Lee tapped in from close range after “Naps” collected a loose ball in the middle and sprayed it wide to Renaldo Francois, who advanced up the left side before finding Lee with a teasing low cross - the silence was deafening in the stands.

Fatima came to life after conceding the goal, and forced the issue with their neat passing game moving forward.

“Naps” however doubled the lead 20 minutes later in the 68th, and it came from the same source.

Lee played a one-two with Akinola Gregory and then lashed his shot past Fatima keeper Darrion Hamilton at the near post.

The forward completed his treble in cheeky style, this time fighting off the attentions of four Fatima players before laying a square pass to Decklan Marcelle, who fed him a return pass which he took and dummied his way past Hamilton before playing it into an empty net.

Fatima, however, were determined to leave their mark on the match, and few deserved the consolation goal more than Marcano, who put his right foot through the ball from around 25 yards out, leaving Levi Fernandez sprawling in vain.

The goal however came deep in stoppage time and was not enough to make a difference.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Salandy double lead Tigers to top
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

N’Kosi Salandy scored a pair of goals to lead St Anthony’s College to a comfortable 4-1 whipping of arch-rival St Mary’s College and jumps to top spot on goal difference in the 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division, yesterday.

The “Westmooring Tigers” took the lead in the 16th minute when a shot by Shem Clauzel, the son of former national player Ian “Dread Dribbler” Clauzel, took a wicked deflection off St Mary’s defender Nathaniel Williams and into his own net, but St Mary’s was soon back on level terms in the 20th thanks to Tyrese Spicer in the  Serpentine Road, St Clair encounter.

St Mary’s joy was shortlived, though, as Salandy restored St Anthony’s lead at 2-1 a few minutes which it took into the interval, and two minutes into the second-half, he completed his double and extended the advantage to 3-1 while Haile Beckles added a fourth item three minutes from the final whistle.

With the win, the “Westmoorings Tigers” remained the lone team with a 100 per cent winning record —three wins from as many matches for maximum nine points, the same tally as Shiva Boys Hindu College and Presentation College of San Fernando, but with a superior goal-difference and the lead on the 15-team table

Down at David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal, Shiva Boys got goals from Yohannes Richardson in the 32nd and Tyrell Baptiste in the 70th to blank former table-toppers Trinity College of Moka 2-0.

At Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, Nathaniel Dyer (61st) and Jordan Riley (87th penalty) netted second-half items for Presentation College of San Fernando in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Signal Hill which led through a 30th minute Akeem Benjamin strike.

The trio of defending champions, Naparima College  Fyzabad Secondary, and San Juan North Secondary all won to move into four-way tie with Trinity College of Moka on seven points each.

At Fatima College Ground, Mucurapo, Isaiah Lee scored the first hat-trick of the SSFL season to lead Naparima past Fatima 3-1; Alleric Williams (31st & 41st) and Ken Bhola (87th & 90th) netted two goals each for Fyzabad in a 4-2 entertaining win over Pleasantville at Mahaica Oval, Pt Fortin, and San Juan North edged East Mucurapo 2-1 at Bourg Mulatresse, San Juan

And in the second match at Mahaica Oval,cellar-place St Benedict’s College, coached by former national striker Leonson Lewis picked up its first point in a 0-0 draw with St Augustine Secondary. Matches continue on Wednesday.

Signal Hill stays unbeaten with James’ beaver-trick
By Rachael Thompson-King (T&T Guardian)

Signal Hill, led by Asha James, rolled out another win in the Tobago Zone of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schoolgirls Football League Championship Division on Thursday evening, claiming a hard fought 5-3 victory over host Mason Hall.

James were responsible for four of those goals to help Signal Hill remain unbeaten after four matches, already topping Speyside High (16-1), Bishop’s High (5-2) and Scarborough Secondary (3-0), respectively.

The other goal for the winner came from Avonel Lorraine, to help Signal Hill closeout round one as the leader.

Mason Hall, who was previously undefeated with wins over Bishop’s (3-2), Scarborough (2-1) and Pentecostal Light and Life (8-0), got a goal each from Desiree Cox, Celine Lorraine and Curisia Campbell but they were all in vain as their team suffered its first loss of the season.

There were a flurry of goals in the other matches played in the zone as well, with Scarborough sealing a 6-nil victory over Speyside High and Bishop’s High, a 6-1 win over Pentecostal Light and Life.

Aaliyah Charles and Jahmilia Edwards netted three goals each for Scarborough, who secured its second victory from four matches.

In the other affair, Megan Henry, Darianne Henry and Dinesha Manning each netted a pair of goals for Bishop’s. Faith Joseph hit the lone item for Pentecostal.

Denecia Prince finally returned to action for Fyzabad in the South Zone after getting approval from the Ministry of Education and her presence was immediately felt, notching four goals, to pilot Fyzabad to a 11-1 win in a one-sided encounter.

Abishai Guy and Shanaqua Lewis scored a double each while their teammates Aniyka Sylvan, Precious Paul and Douanna Osbourne added one apiece in the comfortable win in Pleasantville, to complete the first round on top of the standings. St Joseph Convent got an easy three points after Point Fortin East forfeited the other match in the South Zone.

North Zone’s leading scorer Shauna Lee Govia scored the winner for Tranquility, who escaped with a narrow one-goal victory Bishop’s Anstey High.

Govia’s tally now goes up to 12 goals after netting five in her team’s opening match against St Joseph Convent Port-of-Spain, bettering that on Sunday against St Francois Girls, with six.

On Sunday from 3.45 pm, Tranquility will be looking to stay unbeaten to end the first round on top when it meets Diego Martin Central, who also has no losses.

Shiva Boys, Pres target outright SSFL lead
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

South Zone duo, Shiva Boys Hindu College and Presentation College of San Fernando will both be confident of taking sole possession of the top spot in the 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division when round six matches take place today from 3.40pm.

Both Shiva Boys and Presentation College are currently joint top of the 15-team table with 12 points from five matches, two ahead of two-time reigning champion Naparima College which has a match in hand while St Anthony's College, the lone team with a 100 per cent winning record is fourth with nine points from three matches.

Today, Shiva Boys which leads by virtue of a better goal-difference than Presentation College of San Fernando led by its core of senior players in Junior Assoon, Tyrell Emmanuel, Tyrel Baptiste, Yohannes Richardson, Quinn Rodney and national Under-20 goalkeeper Denzil Smith  will host cellar-placed East Mucurapo which is yet to pick up a point after three matches, at David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal.

Zion Mc Leod, who has been the shining light for East Mucurapo with all three of his team's goals this season will be happy for the return of national duo, Jesse Williams and Micah Lansiquot as they try and turn their team's wretched form around.

Presentation College, on the other hand, boosted by the return of national Under-20 duo, captain Kareem Riley and Kori Cupid, and Under-17 midfielder Nion Lammy will also fancy its chances of full points against struggling third from bottom, Queen's Royal College, yet to win in four matches, at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. For QRC, John-Paul Rochford is expected to feature after his national Under-17 exploits as well.

Already boasting leading scorer Isaiah Lee (five goals) in its ranks, the Angus Eve-coached Naparima College will also be delighted with the return of its four national Under-17 players in Tyrique Andrews, Mark Ramdeen, Andre Raymond, Isaiah Hudson (Naparima College) as well as Under-20 pair, Rondell Payne and Shane Sandy for its home clash versus a resurgent Signal Hill at its Lewis Street, San Fernando, home.

Following a mid-week bye, the "Westmooring Tigers" of St Anthony's also sees the return of its quota of national players in Elijah Shade, Jodel Brown, Che Benny, Jaydon Prowell, Tyrese Bailey, Jabari Brice and Kathon St Hillaire when they journey to Fyzabad, which is two points behind.

In another matches,  San Juan North which welcomes the return of Kerdell Sween and Brandon Semper from national duties host St Mary's College at Bourg Mulatresse, San Juan; St Benedict's College and Pleasantville Secondary meet at Mahaica Oval, Pt Fortin, and Trinity College Moka is at home to St Augustine.
