Naps, Pres close gap on Shiva Boys
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Two-time defending champions Naparima College and Presentation College of San Fernando both picked up important victories to close the gap on leaders Shiva Boys Hindu College to three points when matches in the Premier Division of the 15-team 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary  Schools Football League continued yesterday.

With Shiva Boys winning away 1-0 to Signal Hill on Wednesday, the pressure was on the chasing pack to keep pace and Naparima playing at its Lewis Street, San Fernando home ground, got a double from Akinola Gregory and one from the league's top scorer, Isaiah Lee to whip Pleasantville 3-1. Anfernee Joefield got the lone reply for Pleasantvillle.

With the Naparima improved to 19 points from eight matches, the same as Presentation College and three behind Shiva Boys, but with a match in hand.

The scenes were more dramatic down at Morne Coco Road, Westmoorings with Alex Lee-Yaw scoring a hat-trick, including an 85th minute winner for Presentation College to hand St Anthony's a second straight home loss.

National Under-17 midfielder, Che Benny put the host ahead inside the first ten minutes, but Lee-Yaw replied with strikes in the 18th and 27th for Presentation to lead 2-1 at the half-time whistle.

With 14 minutes left in the match, another national Under-17 standout, Jaydon Prowell drew the “Westmooring Tigers” level, but with five minutes left on the clock Lee-Yaw snatched all three points for the visitors to keep their title hopes alive and dent the host chances as well.

Elswhere, St Mary’s close to within a point of St Anthony's in fifth spot with a 1-0 road win over Fyzabad Secondary thanks to Daniel Conocchiari; Queen's Royal College got its first win of the season, 2-1 against San Juan North Secondary; East Mucurapo Secondary also won 2-1 at home to St Benedict’s College and St Augustine Secondary blanked Fatima College 2-0. Matches resume tomorrow.

Lee hat-trick puts Naps back in hunt.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Isaiah Lee scored his second hat-trick of the campaign as two-time defending champions Naparima College crushed cellar-placed St Benedict’s College to get back in the hunt for the title in the 15-team 2016 Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division yesterday.

With leaders Shiva Boys Hindu College on a bye, second placed Presentation College of San Fernando and Naparima had chances to go top and close the gap respectively.

However it was Naparima, playing at its Lewis Street, San Fernando home ground which took full advantage and led by Lee’s goals in the 16th, 71st and 78th for his second treble of the season, after his first came against Fatima College to lead all scorers with 12, which coasted to the comfortable win.

Renaldo Boyce also chipped in with a double in the 45th and 62nd minute for the Angus Eve-coached unit to move to 23 points from ten matches, the same as Presentation College and two adrift of leaders Shiva Boys.

However, while Shiva Boys and Naparima have four matches left each to play, Presentation only has three in the race for the Premier Division crown and the two Shell Cup spots.

Up at Trinity College Ground, Moka, Maraval, Presentation needed a 90th minute equalizer from in-form James Alex Lee-Yaw to salvage a 1-1 draw with lowly Trinity which led through a 36th minute Jevon Ward strike.

In other matches, Tyrese Bailey scored a double as St Anthony’s College ended a three-match losing streak with a 4-0 home win over Pleasantville and was joined on 19 points by North Zone rival, St Mary’s College which stunned host Signal Hill 2-1 thanks to a Trey La Motte, 67th minute penalty.

Down at the other end of the table, St Augustine moved clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 home victory over East zone rival, San Juan North; Fyzabad slammed Fatima 4-1 behind a Shaquille Louison hat-trick, and East Mucurapo and Queen’s Royal College, battled to a 0-0 deadlock. Matches resume on Saturday.

Shiva Boys look to close in on title...Naps, Pres must win
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Shiva Boys will look to close in on its first Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division crown when it faces Queen’s Royal College at David Williams Recreation, Penal today from 3.30 pm.

The Hayden Ryan-coached Shiva Boys team currently leads the 15-team table with 25 points from ten matches, two more than two-time defending champion Naparima College and Presentation College of San Fernando followed by St Anthony’s College and St Mary’s College, both with 19 points while St Augustine Secondary, the only other team with a mathematical chance of claiming the title, has 17 points.

Coming off a mid-week bye, Shiva Boys will be well rested for the visit of the Royalians, who drew goalless at East Mucurapo and also needs to pick up points to move clear of the relegation zone.

Also in South Trinidad, Presentation College which missed a chance to go top of the table following a 1-1 draw at Trinity College Moka, will entertain mid-table San Juan North Secondary, beaten 1-0 by East rival, St Augustine Secondary on Wednesday at Guracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Down at St Anthony’s College, Morne Coco Road in Westmoorings, the “Westmooring Tigers” lifted by a 4-0 win over Pleasantville Secondary to end a three-match losing streak, hosts Naparima College in a match that can spell the end of any title hopes for the loser.

Following today’s matches, Shiva Boys will have an easy closing schedule as it faces St Mary’s, Pleasantville and Fatima in their remaining matches; Naparima will meet QRC, East Mucurapo and St Augustine; Presentation tackles St Mary’s and Pleasantville while St Anthony’s come up against St Benedict’s, San Juan North and QRC.

In other key encounters at the end of the table, Pleasantville and Fatima College, third and second from bottom on the standings, clash at Pleasantville while Trinity College entertains East Mucurapo at Moka, Maraval.

Elsewhere, Signal Hill welcomes St Augustine to Tobago, St Mary’s College host cellar-placed and relegation bound, St Benedict’s College at Serpentine Road, St Clair.

At the end of the season, the top two teams will qualify to the inaugural Shell Cup competition while the bottom three teams will be relegated back to their respective zonal Championship Divisions.

Jack nets double as Diego edges Tranquil.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

Kaydeen Jack netted a double to guide Diego Martin Central to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tranquility in the final match of the North Zone of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schoolgirls Football League, in Port-of-Spain on Thursday evening.

Alizza McCulcheon scored the other item for the Diego Martin, to finish the only unbeaten team and claimed the zonal title with 22 points, registering seven wins and a draw.

Shaneen Phillip stepped up to hit a pair of goals herself but her team remained on the losing end when time expired. Her team placed third in the standings after Bishop’s edged ahead of them by a point after picking up three points by default when St Francois Girls forfeited the other match in the zone.

Bishop’s made an impressive comeback late in the season to place second with 16 points - five wins, two losses and a draw - compared to Tranquility’s five wins and three losses for a total of 15 points.

Over in the East Zone, which still has matches outstanding, St Augustine came away with a 2-1 win over St George’s College and San Juan North was held to a goalless draw with Bishop’s Anstey.

Both San Fernando East and Pleasantville Secondary claimed easy points as well after Point Fortin East and St Joseph Convent, forfeited their respective matches.

It was a similar situation in Tobago as leader Signal Hill kept a clean slate to complete the second round and claim the zonal title, without even taking the field as Pentecostal Light and Life forfeited. Signal Hill ended with full 30 points from 10 wins this season.

Mason Hall stayed on for the runners-up position, overpowering Speyside High, 9-1, thanks to four goals from the reliable Celene Lorraine and two from Crystal Toney. Shekila McGilvery, Luvorn Robinson, Curisia Campbell netted a goal each for the winner. Shivern McKenzie scored the lone item for Speyside.

The other match between Scarborough and Bishop’s Anstey ended tied at one.

Shiva Boys inch closer with Rodney’s treble.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Quinn Rodney netted a hat-trick to lead Shiva Boys Hindu College to a comfortable 5-0 mauling of Queen’s Royal College to move closer to capturing the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division crown, yesterday.

The Hayden Ryan-coached Shiva Boys were heavily fancied to gather all three points at David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal and after some early resistance from QRC, Junior Assoon broke the deadlock in the 21st minute while Rodney got his first six minutes later, followed by a strike from Ronaldo Edwards in the 29th for a 3-0 lead at the half-time whistle.

After the resumption, Shiva Boys continued to dominate with Rodney the main beneficiary with further strikes in the 67th and 87th to seal the lopsided win and improved his team to 28 points from 11 matches at the top of the 15-team table, two ahead of Presentation College of San Fernando which got a 40th minute goal from Nion Lammy to eke out a 1-0 win over San Juan North Secondary at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Down at St Anthony’s College, Morne Coco Road, Westmoorings, the “Westmooring Tigers” put a serious dent in two-time defending champions, Naparima College, hopes of a third straight crown with a 4-2 win.

National Under-17 defender Derron John scored two penalties for the “Tigers” while Tyrese Bailey and Shem Clauzel, the son of former national player Ian “The Dread Dribbler” Clauzel, added one each to carry their team to 22 points, one behind Naparima which got its goals from Ronaldo Mc Intosh and Isaiah Lee.

Elswhere, Signal Hill Secondary blanked St Augustine Secondary 2-0 at home thanks to a double from Akiel Frank, in the 11th and 41st as the visitors had main striker Anthony Samuel, red carded in the 43rd, followed by coach Adrian Romain ten minutes into the second-half.

Also yesterday, Trinity College Moka and East Mucurapo Secondary drew 1-1, Pleasantville Secondary and Fatima College also battled to a 1-1 draw, and St Mary’s College was held goalless by cellar-placed St Benedict’s College.

Looking ahead to the closing stages of the league, Shiva Boys have an easy schedule as they face St Mary’s, Pleasantville and Fatima in their remaining matches; Naparima meets QRC, East Mucurapo and St Augustine; Presentation tackles St Mary’s and Pleasantville while St Anthony’s come up against St Benedict’s, San Juan North and QRC.

At the end of the season, the top two teams will qualify to the inaugural Shell Cup competition while the bottom three teams will be relegated back to their respective zonal Championship Divisions.

Rodney scores hat-trick, Shiva hammer QRC
By Jelani Beckles (NEWSDAY).

QUINN Rodney ensured Shiva Boys stayed on top of the Premier Division in the Shell/ First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League as his hat-trick led the leaders to a 5-0 victory over Queen’s Royal College (QRC) at the Penal Recreation Ground yesterday.

QRC, which have showed their prowess in defence this season could not stop Shiva Boys yesterday as after 29 minutes the Royalians had already allowed three goals. Junior Asson got the ball rolling for the southerners in the 21st minute before Rodney netted his first goal of the match in the 23rd.

Before the half hour mark Ronaldo Edwards (29th minute) got his name on the scoresheet as QRC looked for answers.

Rodney made it 4-0 for Shiva Boys in the 67th minute, before completing his hat-trick in the 87th minute. The victory meant Shiva Boys maintained their two-point lead at the top of the standings. Presentation San Fernando moved from third to second with a 1-0 win over San Juan North at Guaracara Park in Pointea- Pierre. Nion Lammy’s 40th minute strike gave Presentation the victory.

At St Anthony’s Ground in Westmoorings, St Anthony’s got past defending champions Naparima 4-2. Scoring for the “Tigers” of St Anthony’s were Derron John (two penalties), Haile Beckles and Shem Clauzel, while Ronaldo McIntosh and Isaiah Lee were on target for Naparima. St Anthony’s remained in fourth place but narrowed the gap on Naparima which dropped from second to third place on the standings.

In other matches, Signal Hill defeated St Augustine 2-0, Pleasantville and Fatima played to a 1-1 draw, St Mary’s and St Benedict’s battled to a 0-0 stalemate, while Trinity and East Mucurapo had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Fyzabad had a bye yesterday.

‘Tigers’ clobber Naparima at home in SSFL
...victory keeps them in title race
By Sean Taylor (Express).

St Anthony's College kept their title hopes alive in the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League yesterday, romping to a 4-2 win against rivals Naprima College on their home turf at Westmoorings.

A double from Derron John and one goal each from Shem Clauzel and Haile Beckles was enough to help the “Tigers” to 4-2 win, despite Isaiah Lee's late cracker from distance, which gave “Naps” hope in the dying stages.

Both teams needed a win to keep within touching distance of Shiva Boys Hindu College, who were routing Queen's Royal College at Irwin Park, Siparia, and the pace of play was breathless from the beginning, in the scorching afternoon sun.

“Naps” wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet when Ronaldo McIntosh tapped a ball in from point blank range in the eighth minute, after Andre Raymond's penetrating run on the left created the easy chance.

Five minutes later, Renaldo Francois had a crack from distance, but his effort was redirected out for a corner by Elijah Shade in the St Anthony's goal.

The hosts almost levelled the score right away when moments later, Tyrese Bailey blew his way past Khris Stroud to square for Beckles, whose shot was stopped on the line, seemingly by the left arm of Tyrike Andrews. The shouts for a penalty by fans behind the goal were ignored by the referee.

The penalty shout was a bad omen for the Naps' defence however, and McIntosh turned from hero to villain when he handled the ball in the penalty area in the 28th minute.

Up stepped centre back John, who dispatched the spot kick to level up. The moment of madness would strike the reigning champions once more two minutes later; this time, Stroud pole-axed Bailey to concede the second penalty in two minutes.

Bailey again buried his spot kick - going to Levi Fernandez's right each time - to send the visitors in front.

The match resumed at full speed ahead after the resumption, and Naparima should have equalised; but Francois hit the bar from close range with an open goal.

Clauzel sent the hosts 3-1 up when he bundled the ball over the line after Krishon Alexander's long run on the left set him up after ping-ponging its way through a crowd of defenders. Beckles then scored a soft fourth as John's free kick was nodded into his path by Bailey, who was putting in a match-of-the-match performance.

The goal of the match would come too little, too late, however as the SSFL's top-scorer Isaiah Lee cut inside from the left, and unleashed a heat-seeker which left Shade rooted to the spot. The “Tigers” managed to hold on to win, despite a massive six minutes of added on time played due to the numerous stoppages yesterday.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Promotion battle continues in SSFL Championship Division
By Sean Taylor (T&T Express)

The Shell/First Citizens Championship division Big Five competition is around the corner, and there are two clear leaders in the zones vying for a play-off spot.

In the South Zone, Princes Town West Secondary have already qualified, after winning all of their eight matches with a ten-point gap over second-placed Moruga Secondary.

Over in Tobago, Speyside High still have four matches to go, but have all but wrapped up their qualification for the playoffs with a 14-point lead over Mason Hall Secondary. The East, North and Central Zones, however, are far from a foregone conclusion.

At the start of the month, Holy Cross College had a six-point lead over Valencia High in the East Zone. However, in the weeks since, Trinity College East have had something to say about their Arima rivals’ bid for promotion.

The “Trinity Hawks” have beaten Five Rivers Secondary twice (7-0 and 8-1), and have also beaten Valencia Secondary 3-0. They lost, however, to Holy Cross 1-0 then drew with them 2-2, which leaves them a point behind the zone leaders, with one more match to play against cellar-placed Toco Secondary, while Holy Cross have played all their matches.

In the North Zone it’s a battle between Tranquility Secondary and Malick Secondary, with both teams locked on 19 points. However, Malick have two games in hand.

Meanwhile, in Central Zone action, Carpichaima East Secondary have a three-point advantage over Chaguanas North Secondary with 18 points.

Over in the Girls’ Championship action, Signal Hill Secondary have a three-point lead in Tobago over Mason Hall Secondary with 24 points. Meanwhile, St Augustine Secondary are still one of the top teams in the East Zone, recording a 19-0 win over San Juan North Secondary and an 11-0 win over St George’s College.

Reigning National Girls InterCol Champions Fyzabad Secondary are currently top of the South Zone with 21 points, three better than Pleasantville Secondary. Over in the North Zone, Diego Martin Central Secondary enjoy a five-point lead over Bishop Anstey Port of Spain and look to be well on their way to winning the zone.

Leaders Shiva Boys staying ‘cool’
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

SECONDARY SCHOOLS Football League (SSFL) leaders Shiva Boys will be taking things step by step, as they enter the homestretch in the Premiership Division.

There are three days of action remaining in the Premiership Division - today, Saturday and next Wednesday.

On the standings, Shiva Boys have a total of 28 points from 11 games, while Presentation San Fernando are next with 26 points from 12 games, two-time champs Naparima 23 from 11 and St Anthony’s 22 from 11.

Each of the top four teams have taken turns sitting at the top of the pile, but Shiva Boys’ consistency have seen them remain in first place for the past few matches.

Today, Shiva Boys will be entertaining St Mary’s at Irwin Park in Siparia.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Shiva Boys’ coach Hayden Ryan acknowledged, “it’s the technical staff that would prepare the players for a Championship. We’re cool.” Describing the mood within the camp as “the same as it has been throughout the tournament”, Ryan is not looking to far ahead in the title race.

“It’s really game by game,” he described their approach.

Key players in the Shiva Boys squad include former national youth team players Tyrel “Pappy” Emmanuel, Quinn Rodney and Judah Garcia but Ryan was quick to point out that the team does not revolve solely on the trio.

“It is a collective effort,” he said.

“Some have to defend, some have to create and some have to score.” However, Ryan admitted that the title was not his major focus this season.

“One of my goals this season is to see the team improve (in) every game,” he said. “This time, I will like to see the team be stronger for the knockout (Intercol). Even though we’re on the road for a Championship, the Championship is not on my mind. My (aim) is to see the team improve so we could be ready for the knockout tournaments.” In other action today, East Mucurapo will be visiting St Augustine, Pleasantville tackle hosts Trinity College, Signal Hill welcome lowly Fatima and Fyzabad.

One win away ...as Assoon puts Shiva on title brink

One win away ...as Assoon puts Shiva on title brink
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Junior Assoon scored a goal in each half to lead Shiva Boys Hindu College to a 3-0 blanking of St Mary’s College and within a win of a first ever Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division title at David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal from 3.40pm.

The win lifted Shiva Boys to 31 points from 12 matches, five more than two-time defending champions Naparima College and Presentation College of San Fernando, and needing only a win from one of its two remaining matches against relegation threatened Pleasantville Secondary and Fatima College to be crowned champions.

Down at Penal, Shiva Boys was held at bay until Assoon broke the deadlock a minute before the half-time whistle while Tyrell Baptiste double the advantage in the 73rd before Assoon got a second and his team’s third three minutes later.

Over at Lewis Street, San Fernando, Naparima College kept its faint hopes of a third straight title alive with a 1-0 defeat of visitors second from bottom, Queen’s Royal College thanks to a 92nd minute item from Jeremiah Kesar.

However, at Morne Coco Road, Westmoorings, St Anthony’s College saw its title hopes ended with a shock 1-0 loss to cellar-placed St Benedict’s College, which got its first win of the season courtesy a 78th left footed free-kick from Dettori Boucher.

In the other key final rounds of matches, Naparima meets East Mucurapo and St Augustine in its final two matches; Presentation tackles St Mary’s and Pleasantville while St Anthony’s come up against San Juan North and QRC.

Elsewhere yesterday, Signal Hill Secondary shut-out Fatima College 2-0; Trinity College of Moka pipped Pleasantville Secondary 1-0; ten-man Fyzabad edged San Juan North Secondary 3-2 and Rahim Gordon got all four goals in St Augustine Secondary’s 4-0 defeat of East Mucurapo Secondary.

At the end of the season, the top two teams will qualify to the inaugural Shell Cup competition while the bottom three teams will be relegated back to their respective zonal Championship Divisions.

Shiva Boys need one more win

Shiva Boys need one more win
By Sean Taylor (T&T Express)

It’s settled. The Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League title will remain in south Trinidad this year.

Shiva Boys Hindu College are flying high and just a win away from their first-ever title. However, San Fernando giants, Naparima and Presentation Colleges, are the only teams who can catch them.

The odds are heavily in Shiva’s favour, as they have 31 points and they would have to drop points in their next two outings —to Pleasantville Secondary and Fatima College—for their rivals to pull the rug from underneath them.

Both Naparima and Presentation are locked on 26 points, with the former enjoying a plus-13 goal differential that has them in second spot.

“Naps” face East Mucurapo Secondary and then St Augustine Secondary; “Pres” must play St Mary’s College and then Pleasantville Secondary; if either of them were to win both their matches and Shiva fail to win, Shiva would drop into third.

Shiva coach Hayden Ryan speaking to the Express yesterday, preferred not to hype up the occasion too much.

“We fear no-one, but we respect everyone,” he said. “We prepared for the game, and we’ll go out and see how it goes tomorrow. We said earlier in the tournament that we felt that we turned the corner. We found our way, everyone start feeling it—you could have felt it in the camp. So that hasn’t changed, we’re confident, but at the same time we respect everyone and we’ll go out tomorrow and see how it goes.”

Other noteworthy clashes today include the relegation-threatened teams.

Pleasantville are in 13th place and must go for a win against Shiva. With the league-leaders needing the points to take the title, it should be a cracker.

Fatima entertain Trinity College and must beat their North Zone rivals to climb out of the drop zone. The Moka boys are already safe with 15 points.

St Benedict’s College need to follow up their first win of the season on Wednesday against St Anthony’s College with two more, to stand a chance of staying in the Premier Division. They face a tough Signal Hill team, however, and finish off at Moka on Wednesday.

Out of the title race, St Anthony’s College travel to Bourg Mulatresse to face a struggling San Juan North Secondary, while Queen’s Royal College have to win against Fyzabad Secondary to stay in the top flight.

Shiva Boys claim SSFL Premiership title.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Shiva Boys Hindu College were yesterday crowned champions of the Premiership Division of the First Citizens/Shell Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) after the defeated Pleasantville Secondary 3-1 at Pleasantville.

Needing just a victory to assure themselves winners, the Shiva Boys outfit thought they had allowed it to slip away when Shane Baldeo opened the scoring in the 24th minute, courtesy a blunder from the leader’s defence.

However Shiva Boys, who have enjoyed a near 100 percent record by losing just once for the season, got the equaliser in the 33rd minute when Shaquille Williams found the net in the 33rd minute to send the teams to be half-time break level at one apiece. At the restart both teams fought hard to get the go-ahead goal, but it was late in the 85th minute that took the advantage through Tyrel Baptiste item, before they sealed the win with another goal from Junior Asson, a minute before the stroke of regulation time.

The victory pushed Shiva Boys to 34 points and outside the reach of any other team with a round of matches still to go.

Presentation College (San Fernando) secured the runner-up position by virtue of a better goal difference after hammering St Mary’s College 10-1 at Serpentine Road, St Clair, while Naparima College edged East Mucurapo 1-0 at Trinity College Ground in Moka, Maraval.

Meanwhile Queen’s Royal College (QRC) faces relegation after going down to Fyzabad, 1-0, at home and Fatima College have confirmed their position in the Championship Division next year by going down to Trinity 1-0 in a match played at Fatima grounds in Mucurapo.

Bottom of the table St Benedict’s College will also join Fatima in the Championship Division next year, in spite of beating Signal Hill 1-0 in Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

In the other match between San Juan North and St Anthony’s College, the “Westmoorings Tigers” claimed a hard fought 4-3 victory at Bourg Mulatresse, San Juan.

RESULTS

St Mary’s College 1 vs Presentation College (San F’do) 10

East Mucurapo 0 vs Naparima 1

Pleasantville Sec 1 vs Shiva Boys 3

QRC 0 vs Fyzabad Sec 1

Fatima 0 vs Trinity Moka 1

Shiva Boys crowned 2016 SSFL champions.
By Jelani Beckles (Newsday).

SHIVA Boys are the 2016 Premier Division Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) champions after a come from behind victory against Plesantville at the latter’s school ground, yesterday.

Needing a win to seal their first Premier Division title, Shiva Boys won the match 3-1 after two goals in the final five minutes.

With one round left, Shiva Boys are now on 34 points and holds an unassailable lead in the standings.

Presentation San Fernando are on 29 points in second place, with 2015 champions Naparima in third place also on 29 points.

Pleasantville, a team battling to avoid relegation, shocked the Shiva Boys supporters as Shane Baldeo gave the home team the lead in the 24th minute. Shiva Boys did not take long to respond as Shaquille Williams found the equaliser in the 33rd minute to leave the match evenly poised at halftime.

The match seemed to be heading for a draw but Tyrell Baptiste found the winner in the 85th minute before Junior Asson sealed the title with an 89th minute strike.

Following the match Shiva Boys coach Hayden Ryan said the league title did not feel like a reality yet. “We win, but it has not soaked in yet because when you coaching you really have to take care of stuff. This game was not an easy game at all, this game they run us down to the board and we needed to pull out everything in order to win this game.” Ryan said Pleasantville fought hard as they don’t want to finish in the bottom three and get relegated.

“It was not a walkover, they challenge us, they come fighting because they fighting relegation too. We respond from behind and we did it again. Kudos to the guys.

He added, “It is not the first time in the tournament we went down and the guys responded positively and come back and win the match comfortably.” Ryan added that the reason for the success of the team is the respect they have for each other.

“One of the reasons (why we are successful) that I could say offhand is that we operate in love, in unity. We respect every single player. I introduce respect to every player, I don’t bawl at one player while allowing the next one off the hook.” Ryan is looking forward to the Intercol competition saying, “We working hard and obviously we looking forward to greater and better things.” The Shiva Boys coach said the school’s principal is planning a celebration for the team.

In other matches yesterday Presentation College trounced St Mary’s 9-1 to move from third to second place, while Naparima dropped from second to third after defeating East Mucurapo 1-0.

Elsewhere St Anthony’s edged San Juan North 3-2, Trinity defeated Fatima 1-0, St Benedict’s got past Signal Hill 1-0 and Fyzabad outlasted QRC 2-1.

The last round on Wednesday is expected to be exciting with many teams trying to avoid relegation.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Presentation College (San Fernando) secured the runner-up position by virtue of a better goal difference after hammering St Mary’s College 10-1 at Serpentine Road, St Clair ...

I guess the Saints started marching during the match.  :P Very distorted result for a team positioned mid-table.

Ryan claimed that the secret to their success was his ability to adjust coaching methods to the culture of his players, who, according to the coach, were big on talent but not so keen on matters like training, organisation and discipline.

“Culture is stronger than principle a thousand times,” said Ryan. “And that is to say that when you grow up doing one thing, behaving one thing [and] believing one thing, it is very hard to just do something else.

Let that sink in! The team that won the league.
