CPL to debut at Lara Stadium 2017.
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

The long awaited Brian Lara Stadium is expected to wel-come cricket in the new year and plans are afoot to host the opening ceremony of the 2017 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at the venue in Tarouba, South Trinidad.

Completion work on the controversial venue was restarted under the present government after the building was left idle for several years needing completion before it could be occupied.

Work has been ongoing for almost a year now and sources close to the government told the Sunday Guardian that the government of the day plan to bid for the opening ceremony to take place at the venue which should coincide with the official opening of the ground, which is July, 2017.

According to the source: “The stadium is owned by the government and of course the owners of the CPL will be looking to use it because it would be cheaper than the Oval. The venue is world class for what it offers in terms of ‘live’ broadcast and this will be a great fit for the CPL which is called the greatest party in sport when it comes to the game’s T20 format.”

CPL rents the Queen’s Park Oval for an average of US$40,000 per day (an estimated TT$300,000) and now the government can use the facility to negotiate with the organisers to have more matches played in T&T.

Chairman of the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT) Noel Garcia revealed a couple months ago that 15 packages out of 17 were awarded to contractors and work is ongoing at the site in Tarouba.

Clean up work at the site has been completed, structural work is ongoing and nearing completion.

General repair and rehabilitation works on the building are going together with work on the field (the grass has been replanted), work on the pavilion is almost over and officials are looking at closing out work on the facility for the latest January, 2017.

The initial cost given in 2006 for the stadium was $500 million TT dollars, when construction started to have it ready for the T&T leg of the 2007 ICC Limited Overs World Cup for which T&T secured the Brown package.

However, with the cost overruns and the increase in prices of materials, this amount has increased significantly.

The Chairman of UDECOTT, as of June 2008, Calder Hart, had placed the approximate completion date at July 2008, some two years after the initial schedule handover. Now it should be ready nine years on.

This stadium will serve as a training facility for cricket players.

It will feature four indoor cricket training pitches with computerised biometric technology to measure an athlete’s performance, including two full-length run-up pitches for fast-bowlers.

Patrons at the stadium will have an unhindered view from every area of the facility, including the concessionaires area.

It also has areas specifically de-signed for the print, radio and television media, respectively.

258 players register for CPL 2017.
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

As the popularity of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) continues to grow, so to the interest from international players, as there has been an increase in the number of them signing up for the 2017 draft, which takes place next next Friday in Barbados.

In all, 258 players from across the Caribbean and most of the leading cricketing nations are in the frame to secure a coveted place in the tournament, which is this year scheduled to take place between 1 August and 9 September, with fixtures and dates to be announced in due course.

There’s a strong list containing 26 talented players from the West Indies all of whom were both drafted and undrafted in 2016, including former Antigua Hawksbills and St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots star all-rounder Marlon Samuels who was the man of the match for the West Indies in their ICC World T20 final victory over England last year.

Most of the international players will be coming from Pakistan, as there are 46 in the draft an increase of eight from the last tournament.

There will be 28 players from Australia in the Draft, an increase of six from last year’s campaign, including a blend of experience in Brad Haddin, Ben Hilfenhaus and Brad Hogg allied to a crop of up-and-coming talent which includes leg-spinner Adam Zampa who was a star for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2016 season.

A further 17 New Zealanders, including the likes of Corey Anderson, Grant Elliott and Jimmy Neesham, are also in the mix.

There are 46 players from Pakistan which includes Kamran Akmal (T&T Red Steel) and Umar Akmal (Trinbago Knight Riders). South Africa will export 16 players and Sri Lanka 19 which comprise Jeevan Mendis, who displayed his talent with the Barbados Tridents.

Zimbabwe will not be overlooked as Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Craig Ervine and Malcolm Waller are all hoping to be drafted for some Caribbean action.

England have four players and included is T20 specialist fast bowler Tymal Mills, who made his T20 international debut for England against Sri Lanka last summer, and is an eye-catching addition amongst the contenders who will be aiming to secure a place in the Hero CPL for the first time. Ireland will have three representatives in the Draft.

Afghanistan’s rise in the shortest format of the game sees Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi named in a five-strong contingent who will also be hoping to make their tournament bows.

With the high-profile transfers of Chris Gayle (Jamaica Tallawahs to St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots) and Dwayne Smith (Guyana Amazon Warriors to Barbados Tridents) already confirmed, the list does not include those players who have been retained by their franchises. Republic Bank, CPL partner till 2020
T&T Newsday Reports.

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Republic Bank have jointly announced the signing of a threeyear contract extension to continue as the tournament’s Official Bank Partner until the end of the 2020 campaign.

Headquartered in Trinidad, Republic Bank has sponsored the Hero CPL for the last two seasons and is expanding its role in the region’s largest sports-entertainment event in line with the vision to be the region’s leading bank.

As part of the arrangement, all CPL banking activity will move to the bank which will assist in helping navigate the inter-island challenges that many Caribbean businesses face.

On May 15 this year, Republic Bank will mark its 180th year of operations - a testament to its great standing across Caribbean society. As part of this new deal, fans of the Hero CPL will avail of special offers and exciting competitions to further extend the strong links across the local communities.

Nigel Baptiste, Managing Director of Republic Bank Limited, reiterated the Bank’s focus, saying: “Republic Bank is honoured, as the Caribbean’s largest indigenous banking Group, to partner with the Hero Caribbean Premier League in bringing the region’s largest sport entertainment event to cricket fans everywhere.

This partnership has given us the opportunity to not only augment our focus on building successful societies, both locally and regionally, but to also help provide the economic and environmental benefits of tourism – a sector that is critical to the development of many of our Caribbean countries.

“Our hope is that, through this League, there will be deeper integration and collaboration between the leading minds and organisations across the region, resulting in both the tangible and intangible benefits that can come from being parts of a larger whole. What better way to start that unification, than through the time-honoured and globally treasured sport of cricket.” Welcoming the announcement, Damien O’Donohoe, Chief Executive Officer of the Hero CPL said: “It is my great pleasure to welcome Republic Bank as one of Hero CPL’s major partners for the next three years.

Their vision of an event that unites and inspires the region is a vision that we also share. We look forward to working closely to continue to drive the mutual goals of social and sporting unity, and positive economic impact through investment, global exposure and tourism.” Jamie Stewart, Commercial Director of the Hero CPL, added: “Success in T20 cricket relies on players with all-round abilities and in that sense Republic Bank are a very appropriate partner for the region’s T20 extravaganza.

Their comprehensive array of products and services making them the great all-rounder of regional banking.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Carib signs 3-year deal with CPL
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

Carib has continued it’s love affair with Caribbean cricket by coming onboard the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) as a sponsor for the next three years.

The decision by the company was announced at a press conference at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, last evening. This is a major boost for the popular CPL, as sponsorship is hard to comeby in these harsh economic times. Carib has decided that they must do their part in assisting what has now become the ‘biggest party in sport’.

Carib will be the official beer of the tournament, and officials at Carib will work together with the tournament’s marketing and sponsorship team this summer to deliver outstanding fan-centred events around the various stadia. In addition, this year fans across the Caribbean can relish specially themed ‘tailgating’ parties, which will hype up the colour and carnival atmosphere off the field even further.

Damien O’Donohoe, Chief Executive Officer of the Hero CPL, said, “Carib is passionate about this partnership and they are an innovative and socially aware company who have strong core values, such as leadership, accountability and going the extra mile, which are also a big part of the Hero CPL’s own values. Carib Beer has a long-standing association as the number one beer in the Caribbean and we are delighted to team up together for the next three years. We believe that this association will enable both brands to ramp up the biggest party in sport this summer, in this, the Hero CPL’s fifth year.”

Ian MacDonald, chief executive officer at Carib Brewery, said: “The importance of cricket to Caribbean people is beyond doubt and at Carib Brewery we have, over the years been at the forefront of supporting local, regional, cultural, sporting, charitable and social activities throughout the diaspora. Carib beer and cricket are firmly rooted in the way of life of our people and with T20 being the most exciting form of modern day cricket, it gives us great pleasure to come on board as the official beer of the Hero CPL.”

The CPL will bowl off in the first week of August and will end with the finals in the first week of September. There has been no announcement of where the finals will be played but there has been interest shown from as far away as Singapore.

Thanks. I was too lazy. But the progress from Colonial to RB is interesting.

1925 The Colonial Bank merged with the Anglo-Egyptian Bank (est. 1864) and the National Bank of South Africa (est. 1891) to form Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas) (Barclays Bank (DCO) ). Barclays had inherited the ownership of The Colonial Bank when it acquired the London Provincial and South Western Bank in 1918. On May 6, 1926, The Colonial Bank changed its name to Barclays Bank (DCO).[3]

CPL accepts US$1M offer
T&T Guardian Reports.

Caribbean Premier League (CPL) executives have accepted the T&T Government’s offer of US$1 million to host this year’s CPL finals, but Cabinet approval is still needed for the deal to be finalised.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Darryl Smith, wrapped up the deal yesterday after he led held talks with the CPL group on behalf of the Government.

Speaking to Guardian Media Sports last night he described the meeting as a “pleasant” and “successful” one.

Smith said once his Government colleagues accept the proposal, the agreement will be fulfilled partly in T&T currency and partly in contra.

He said CPL Chief Executive Damien O’Donohue and chief operating officer Pete Russell seemed eager to host the grand regional T20 cricket finale in T&T.

However, he said the terms include the possibility of matches being played at both the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain and the recently opened Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

News of the CPL’s interest in staging matches at the new BLA was broken exclusively by Guardian Media Sports since last December, when it was initially hopes the opening ceremony would have been staged there.

The facility was opened on May 12 with a friendly T20 match between a Brian Lara XI and a World XI and since then the CPL executive seemed to warm to the idea of hosting the final stages of the competition.

The CPL rents the Queen’s Park Oval for an average of US$40,000 per day (an estimated TT$300,000) to stage matches, according to reports.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Looks like the Knight Riders have to play an extra match for the chance to advance to the final.

This has been a very disciplined bowling performance by the Patriots.
