don't you guys think that you are being a bit unrealistic? a PM that was installed 15 months ago cannot make an instant dent in crime it is simply not a realistic goal, if that was the case then the former regimes would have done so and crime would be a nonissue.

ATM crime is a major issue world wide and has gripped a few developed nations like spain -france even places which once enjoyed a high quality of life until recently ala demark and sweden who 25 years ago were the safest places on earth to reside who now has found themselves trying to make sense of the upsurge in violent criminal activity which has turned their once tranquil society on it's head.

people tend to forget what is the driving force behind crime world wide yet they are not compelled to take a closer look at the drug trade which rakes in more purse than the petroleum industry. most of us underestimate the magnitude of the impact that the drug trade has made on the world and it's quality of life.

20 years ago honduras was the budding star of central america where a high quality of living was enjoyed, now today it is murder capital of the world with an 85% or more murder rate per capita since the cartels landed on their door step.

the reality is that the drug trade has been changing the face of our nation for decades and now it has taken root. in present time police officers and stewards of the courts are no longer men and women of honor and could be bought and sold like chicken at a fowl farm. so you and controversial could stay right there and criticize. all the PMs tried and failed to curb crime and it would take the whole nation to band behind their leader to rid the country of this plague, not just one man and his minister of national security.

crime took three decades to take root and you want to cut it down in 15 months? that's a tall order for an ordinary politician who has to follow the rules and guide lines of a civilized society, unless you're using a military marshal law approach to clean up the nation of course, which could land you in international court on war crimes charges.

... However, the issue is an issue that the present government had a headstart on whilst in opposition (not merely the implementation phase since being sworn-in).

Despite resolution of the issue being multi-dimensional, the issue is not a novel one and is, was, and should have been recognised as the most pressing challenge facing the country. At this stage in the present government's term, the population should (have) be(en) getting the sense that a new sheriff with a clear plan is in town. That's not being transmitted to the populace.

Instead, crime has negotiated the change in administration seamlessly.

No one is denying that a reasonable period of transition (in terms of efffectuating policy) ought to have occurred, but the authority of the state's stamp on battling crime should be felt by now. On the contrary, the country has transitioned to a state of impunity. We are on a dangerous path.

And, the present opposition should be ashamed of themselves for unduly politicising an issue on which their moral authority is lacking and at which they presided over a turn to guide the proper order.

The political class (across the spectrum) needs to adopt a completely renovated approach to crime. One or two of the new guard "get it", but the Prime Minister's projection on the matter has not produced even a minimum facelift. We are beyond cracking the whip time. It's time to drop the hammer. And heavily.

I want to address this separately.

We are a "who doh hear, does feel" kind of society. Do you have an issue with the apparatus of the state projecting that?

is demography a factor? the median age for males in t&t seem to be around mid-20s while in other less restive countries, the median is in the mid-30s. t&t might just have to ride this out and in 10 years, after everything blow up, the crime will come down.

So if all these 20 somethings dying where will the older demographic come from in 10 years?
What about the birth rate? Is that coming down?

Your analysis is simple to the extreme. Need to continue following the line of critical thinking. Do not stop short

according to the data the population growth rate below 20 years is slowing.

demography is one factor that has not been mentioned in the discussion on crime. yes, crime in t&t is not driven by one factor. sounds like you have a more sophisticated analysis that yuh keeping under your hat for a special occasion. smart.

If we waiting for the population to get old, so that the crime will go down, then that augurs disaster for the Afro Trini. We need  young people. This is  self inflecting genocide.

Allyuh might have heard of the Arab Spring. Well demographers predicted that unrest about 10 years before it kicked off. Available jobs vs. Unemployed young males.

There is little diversification in the economy, youths in the ghetto, get govt contracts and run their illegals to maintain their livelihood, you then have a system where they can be subject to being killed and then replaced by a younger head who ready to run the show..

Once they taste the better life, girls, cars, money, an illusion of power in their blocks, they are happy, illiteracy is rampant and not everyone will get a government job, not everyone is cut out for that and the private sector doesn't offer a diversity of opportunities

The govt is creating this dangerous vacuum, so you ask about the 10 year cycle, it may not exist, because they are either killed, end up in jail or continue running their things because that's all they know.. broken homes, the govt and drug lords dropping off 1% of the product passing through Trinidad is what is continuing this dangerous cycle.. police and military are also involved, in some cases their girls are aligned to gangs..

How do you rebuild, well there's only one answer, cut the head off of the snake and the snake in this situation is not the youths ...

Dad and daughter were shot dead (little lady was only 5)

SOLOMON Joseph and his five-year-old daughter were shot dead, and not stabbed, as police were initially told.

Joseph was shot three times in the abdomen. The child was shot once in the neck. The motive for the killings remains a mystery.

Autopsies on the bodies were done on Friday at the Forensic Science Centre, St James.

The bodies were found inside the family's small wooden home at Mamoral No. 1, central Trinidad on Friday morning.

Relatives were told that people liming on the road near the house heard explosions shortly after midnight.

Hours later, Joseph, 36, was found at the base of a bed, with one foot on the mattress. Daughter Solisha was in the bed, and the first responder thought she was asleep until were discovered.

The mother, Kernisha Solomon worked the 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift at a casino.

The killings were discovered shortly after 3 a.m. after Solomon, 22, tried contacting her husband, because he was late in picking her up from work.

When he did not answer, she contacted  a neighbour who when went to check on the family. It was the neighbour who found Solomon Joseph dead, and thought the daughter was still asleep.

Solisha Solomon was a first year pupil of the Carapo Roman Catholic Primary School.

Certainly not the response I expected.

Crime isn’t new to T&T, says Hinds

Crime is not new to Trinidad and Tobago, as heinous acts have been committed over the last 20 years, says Government Minister Fitzgerald Hinds.
“We have a crime epidemic, so the motion (in Parliament) calls it, but I am saying what we see happening now is now new, Member for Chaguanas East. If you look at the headlines in this country over the last 20 years, screaming headlines about crime, who lost their head, which baby get killed, I mean this is not new,” he said in his contribution to the Opposition’s private motion on the crime epidemic which was debated at the Parliament sitting yesterday.
Hinds, the newly appointed Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General, said heinous crimes are not committed in T&T alone, pointing out that he read of a case in Russia where one man killed 54 people and ate their entrails.
He said there is a “new phenomenon” on the horizon where global drug trafficking is becoming more sophisticated.

Mr.Hinds you are an idiot to talk that kind ah shit, are you justifying the crime situation with your foolish comparison of crime  20 years ago,,please do better than that.I don't live in TT so I am safer than most Trinis,I feel sorry for my people and wonder when our governments will bring crime under control,it's as if they(the Govt)thinks it's not that important, after all its mostly Laventillians killing each other, but with the new Government it has spread to other parts with speed. As far as I'm concerned, crime should be first and last on the government agenda, from what I read and hear from family and friends,it's like living in a prison.I also hear some rubbish about Honduras and other places where crime is out of control,so that basically means,we must follow and have a high crime rate, what bullshit. When a country's population is suffering and so badly hurt because of a murderous minority, the government in power takes the blame,we have one of the most mixed population in the world, and have lived in harmony with each other, why should a savage minority have us "quaking in our boots",before I close let me say,Mr.Hinds, you are a "pothong".
