T&T quietly seeking 3-points, Mexicans wants to seal W/C spot by summer.
By Inshan Mohammed.

Mexicans flying high - T&T hopes to clip El Tri wings.

Some may say that Panama are one of the weaker teams Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) will have to face in the 2017 HEX, some may even say that they are also the oldest. One thing for certain, they are a cohesive unit and it's by no luck and chance they were unbeaten until their slim 1-0 defeat to T&T in Port of Spain last Friday.

Head coach Dennis Lawrence and his staff must be applauded for getting the job done effectively. T&T must now build on the victory and take it to the Mexicans in tomorrow's affair at the Hasley Crawford Stadium from 7pm.

If Mexico beats T&T tomorrow, they could very well qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia by summer. Mexico's next two games are at home against table-proper Honduras and a rehabilitated United States team and, with an almost 100% home record, victories for Mexico are a huge possibility. Now it's up to T&T to put a spoke in the Mexicans wheel and force them to wait a bit longer for their inevitable destination.

X-Factor

Now, without Keron Cummings, T&T never looked the same in recent times, the link-up play from the locally based superstar and T&T forward line were a match made in heaven. The talented left-footer played a pivotal role in T&T's 2015 Gold Cup epic 4-4 comeback against CONCACAF's giants that left pundits dumbfounded and the Mexicans faces in disbelief. It was like a bucket of ice-cold water over delusions of grandeur.

With hindsight, it is easy to brush all that off and suggest Mexico should always beat tiny T&T. Not at all, two months later without its inspirational captain (Kenwyne), T&T again pulled out a rabbit from their hats when they met the Mexico (Eli-Tri) in a friendly encounter at the Rio Tinto stadium in Salt Lake City. The match ended in a 3-all draw, this time Mexico were the one's getting the last laugh, as they had to rally from 2-goals down and a late strike from Héctor Herrera to end the match even. The Gold Cup match must had been replaying in the players heads and seemed quite content to have settled with a draw at the end.

What did we learned from both matches? own-goals from forced mistakes. If Kenwyne Jones (in the first match) and Daneil Cyrus (in the second match) hadn't scored against their compadre Jan-Michael Williams, T&T could have had a more positive results against the North Americans, obviously, Kenwyne's goal were an outright mistake, while, Cyrus' was a result of a silly mistake because of added pressure. Not blaming anyone, just amazed what T&T could do when up to the task.

Mexico away

Mexico, does not play well on the road and they do have a particular gripe when they have to play the Soca Warriors at home. Since 2000, T&T hosted Mexico 5 times, T&T won twice, drew twice and only lost once to the El Tricolor. On neutral grounds, both teams met 4 times since 2000, with 2 wins and 2 draws going in Mexico's favor.

Now, getting back to Cummings, the Central FC man was called up by new head coach Dennis Lawrence but failed to seal a spot on the final roster. One of the reasons were, he hasn't been able to regain his match fitness since being shot in his leg back in 2015. But we do have a player who looks revitalised and ready to lead Lawrence's team captain Kenwyne Jones, a player who manipulated and single-handedly tormented Mexico at the 2015 Gold Cup. The former Stoke City attacker could be the decisive factor in tomorrow' game.

A passionate soldier

Former coach Stephen Hart spent 3-years nurturing the current crop of players' incremental growth and now that he's gone, Dennis Lawrence seems to be falling right into place and positively continuing the upward trend.

Lawrence answered emphatically to his new job and has brought life into the team. Without getting carried away by the 1-0 result over Panama, I must applaud the T&T coaching staff and I do appreciate what I saw from the players, certainly, a result to build on and not crawl under a rock and criville-up when Mexico shows up tomorrow.

Dennis “Tallest” Lawrence looked impulsive and passionate from the bench, like Liverpool's Jürgen Klopp, it was nice seeing the him hugging his players when they exited the field, much love can only do wonders for the players' confidence. The former soldier will definitely instill discipline and passion into the T&T team. As a player Lawrence was all heart and soul and as we all saw it was his goal took T&T to its first ever World Cup in 2006.

With Sol Campbell, one of England's best defenders in the game and T&T's goalscoring machine Stern John on his staff, Dennis seems to be in safe hands.

Hopefully, T&T don't get deceived by the Panamanian-pip and stay focus at the tasked ahead. No doubt T&T can pull off a surprise versus Mexico come Tuesday, but that would entirely be up to their top players like; Kevin Molino, Kenwyne Jones, Cordell Cato, Khaleem Hyland, Levi Garcia, Andre Boucaud, Joevin Jones and the new and well talked about Jamille Boatswain, all of whom can punch the wind out of any oppositions on their day.

Sheldon Bateau is also a welcoming sight after serving a one match suspension and will likely partner Daneil Cyrus in central defence.

Mexican wave

Mexico meanwhile, is one of the most technically gifted teams in CONCACAF, they may not be able to match T&T physically or out jump them or even out run them, but they certain provoke you enough to make mistakes and lunge on you with venom. They are smart, they can move the ball around constantly like Barcelona does and they will sniff you out like a bloodhound until they get into a position to do the damage.

The North Americans know they wouldn't be able to match their taller competitors through set-plays or dead balls, so they would probably litter their players around T&T's penalty box and surge attacks down the center blazing shots from on-top of the box. T&T should count their blessings though, LA Galaxy's attacker Giovani dos Santos, FC Porto's midfielder Jesús Corona and of-course the talented PSV Eindhoven hitman Andres Guardado are all absent through injury.

The aging Rafael Márquez is also out after hurting his back in last Friday’s win over Costa Rica. Coach  Osorio has decided not to call in any replacements for Marquez and Jurgen Damm so he’ll have just 22 players available to him against Trinidad and Tobago.

In-spite the injuries, Mexico stilled managed to get the better of Costa Rica (Ticos) in an impressive 2-0 victory last Friday, claiming the number one spot and dumping them into second place. After, its 2016 Copa América Quarter-final humiliating 7-0 defeat to Chile, Mexico seems to have regain its confidence and at the moment they are riding high under head coach Juan Carlos Osorio. Mexico is likely to go with a similar 4-3-3 formation as against Costa Rica.

Historic Chicharito

Speak to people who have known Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from the beginning of his career and the characteristic that is highlighted is his mental strength. "Chicharito" has been able to ride the ups and downs of his career and consistently score goals, adapting to life in three different European leagues along the way. The center-forward now has his individual place in Mexican football's Hall of Fame.

Hernandez seemed to have regained his prolific finishing skills netting one against Costa Rica and as a result tied Jared Borgetti's goal-record for his country with 46. The Bayer Leverkusen striker is one of the quietest players you'll see on the field. He's quiet like a mouse but still as a house, you may not see him for a periods in the game, but then, he shows up from nowhere and pounce magically. In the box he is easily the best finisher in CONCACAF, he's slippery and quick, surely a man to keep close eyes on. Carlos Vela also adds to Mexico's attack.

Then you have Héctor Herrera, a player who can kick the ball like Steven Gerrard did in his prime from half field. Carlos Salcedo, wingbacks Luis Reyes and Miguel Layún and center-back Néstor Araújo are the anchormen that gets forward in a blink of an eye.

Araujo has scored two goals for Santos Laguna so far in the 2017 Clausura, but before Friday night, he hadn't struck for the Mexico national team since the 2011 Copa America. Fast-forward to Friday, though, and his towering and hefty figure allowed him to connect a darting header that Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas simply couldn't stop to put El Tri up 2-0. On top of being a great defender who provides solidity in the back-line, he's smart in taking the ball out from the back.

Miguel Layun, Hector Moreno, Hector Herrera and Carlos Vela all carrying yellow cards.

A future star

Orbelin Pineda, 20, is also a highly rated youngster that is liked very much by his head coach Juan Carlos Osorio. The Chivas man has emerged as the cream of the young Mexican central midfield crop. El Tri are loaded with good young players in the center, but Pineda is said to be one of the best.

What I admire Mexico the most for is, they let their boots do the talking. They however, are in the Warriors Den and does not like to be man-handled, they easily lose their rhythm, therefore, T&T must take it to them early and try to dictate the flow of the game because, if Mexico finds their tempo, it's goodnight for T&T and I mean, a knock-out punch, goodnight.

The El Tri has already arrived in T&T on a chartered flight from Mexico City around 23:30 and will train at the Hasley Crawford Stadium around 5:pm.

Osorio told ESPN's Tom Marshall: "I think that every game has it's own pressure," said Osorio. "Tomorrow we compete for three points to stay in first place [in the Hexagonal table]. The objectives are to qualify [for the World Cup] in first place. We have to keep on track."

"We spoke with the boys and our position was very clear in that we have to contest each loose ball as if it was the last and be attentive," he said. "That factor will not count in whether or not a player is selected."

The Colombian coach described Trinidad and Tobago as the "most athletic" team in the Hexagonal.

Good luck to the T&T staff and players, after tomorrow's affair, T&T will have only two home games left, so make it count against the Mexicans. I hope to see more fans turn up for this game unlike the match against Panama. It would be disappointing to see more Mexican supporters in our stadium or, the few there, making more noise that us in our turf.

Correct, however, Jonathan dos Santos, Javier Hernandez, Guillermo Ochoa, Carlos Vela, Jesus Molina, Hector Moreno and Nestor Araujo is very good, they were tops vs Costa Rica.

Hector Herrera didn't have a good game.

The Mexican bus money is certainly not going to build Trump's wall. Look, Mexican football fed are very prosperous. They provide their national teams with everything possible to be winners. Their football is probably the best run institution in  Mexico. corporate support knows no bounds. Support to the fullest. Unlike ours.

Best wishes to Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow. I hope that we can win but a draw would be good enough for me.
To win would require a tall effort and that would be a tall order after coming off a hard game on Friday. We can't play with Jones up front if you want to win because we have to press;

We cant commit too many going forward so we need pace on the wings and in the middle so we cant use Edwards.

We need players who could hit from outside so ...

Anyway Good Luck Tallest we need it. Just remember Dont Get Caught Napping.

Lawrence to players: ‘Be brave and believe’
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Senior men’s national football coach Dennis Lawrence is calling on his players to be brave, focused and believe that they can beat Mexico when the teams meet this evening in a World Cup Qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 7pm.

His call at the pre-game press conference at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday comes days after the T&T footballers got their first three points from a dogged 1-0 triumph over Panama at the same venue on Friday last, a result that didn’t change its position on the CONCACAF standing, but has given it hope following its opening two defeats in the hex stage.

Lawrence, who has been in this position before as a player, said he believes the biggest challenge for his players will be keeping their focus. He pointed out that T&T cannot afford to let Mexico take total control of the game since they are extremely good at doing that.

“The key for us is to be brave and do exactly what we want to do. What we cannot afford to do is let Mexico take total control of the game, so it will be a good test for our group. The idea is to be brave tomorrow and try and go toe-to-toe with Mexico and ensure that we stay involve in the game,” Lawrence explained.

The Mexicans pulled off an important 2-0 win over Costa Rica in their last match and will be hoping to maintain their good string of results against T&T. The Soca Warriors have had impressive performances against their opponents, the last being an impressive 4-4 draw at the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2015.

Lawrence said he has been combating a culture where T&T teams tend to rest on their laurels after winning games, noting that he has had to impress on the boys that while it was only natural to want to celebrate the Panama victory, it could only have been for five minutes, as they immediately had to change their focus, as they would be coming up against an extremely talented football nation in Mexico, which they need to be prepared for as best as possible.

In last Friday’s encounter, Lawrence believes the T&T team could have kept the ball a bit more, especially in the second half and hopes his team can improve in that area against the Mexicans tonight.

Since Friday’s contest, Lawrence has been focusing on players’ recovery, saying it is difficult to play two matches in four days, and yesterday he was a happy man as his team was declared injury free. Sheldon Bateau and defender Randanfah Abu Bakr, who both missed Friday’s encounter for varying reasons, were reportedly back to full fitness and were available for selection.

Lawrence dismissed talks the Mexican team can be weakened by the loss of a few key players, saying Mexico has got talent coming out of every avenue. “I think with these players being out, I would like to hope that it can be a positive to us, but I am expecting the replacement to be just as good.”

Lawrence is also hopeful that the players will draw confidence from the previous meetings between the two teams in the past, but made it clear “The main thing is that we need to be brave. We need to be brave and believe that we can go up against this Mexican team which will be extremely difficult, but we need to believe that we can compete and we can do well.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Ah like Boatswain, but Kenwyne playing good ball, so who can he really replace, Cato?

Against Mexico, we might need to go with 5 in de middle?

Put Kenwyne under Boatswain, more like ah 4-4-1-1

Abu Bakr might be a lil to slow for Mexico.

SNM recognized Hasely Crawford Stadium

This Monday night, at 8 pm local time and 18 from the center of Mexico, the National Team of Mexico, directed by Juan Carlos Osorio, recognized the stadium of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Port of Spain, home of its eliminatory match of the day of Tomorrow before the combined Trinidad & Tobago.

With the presence in practice of the Ambassador of Mexico, Jesus Alberto López González, in the Caribbean country, the Aztec set trained for an hour in the building where tomorrow Trinidadians and Mexicans will see each other.

The media had access to the last 15 minutes of the session and in the end the striker, Oribe Peralta, and Mexico National Team strategist Juan Carlos Osorio attended them at a press conference, where the striker was first Who answered the questions and then the Colombian coach.

The first thing mentioned by the Mexican striker is about the state of the Hasely Crawford court in Port of Spain:

"The court is a bit loose, difficult, but I think we have the quality enough to make a good match tomorrow."

Oribe Peralta was clear in denying that neither the court nor the climate will influence the development of tomorrow's match against the Trinitarians:

"No, in this type of instances does not affect that much, we must be attentive to all the situations that happen in the game, we have the ability to dose and know when to make the maximum effort to give the best performance in the game. The court should not be a factor to make a good match tomorrow. "

He finished his speech giving his point of view on the two top scorers in the National Team of Mexico, Jared Borgetti and Javier Hernández:

"The truth is that Jared Borgetti always admired him as a child and wanted to be like him, to be in the situation where he was. With Javier Hernandez I have shared many things, I admire them both equally and I know that they are two great that have put the name of Mexico very high. "

The Technical Director of Mexico, Juan Carlos Osorio, answered on whether Javier Hernández is in a position to start tomorrow against Trinidad & Tobago:

"Fortunately not only Javier Hernandez, but the rest of the boys, are well and if you can play, has many desires, win like the rest, is an obviously difficult decision because we know that Javier is a great finisher, very important for We, but beyond the record he is aware that the most important thing is the performance of the team, this to contribute and I think one of the great contributions that makes the group, which is not only their goals, is that it is much closer Everyone, shares more with everyone and we really appreciate that. "

Regarding how the players find themselves physically for tomorrow, he replied:

"Physically they are fine, I think the medical department does a great job. Professor Ríos, Carlos Pecanha and Dr. Serrano have been and always are, a lot of attention to regenerative work, it was a long trip yesterday, the necessary measures were taken and I think the team is really well prepared for tomorrow " .

Regarding whether there will be rotation, he said:

"I would spend more to give you more and better resources to manage that game, which is going to be very different to Costa Rica, a team that plays much more directly, and not only that, but straight, there is not much diagonal ball, but If very direct to the 9, Jones, I think we have the resources to counter that part and we are going to do it, or at least we are going to try it, that is part of the rotation, to see the best possibilities we have for the team .

"If we have the opportunity to enter the last third and ten times to reach the arch rival, at least five restarts and at each restart the ball will come long at number 9, the goalkeeper pulls out very long, he will probably look for him And try to try the extensions for the other forward, we have to take that into account when selecting the lineup.

The Colombian strategist explained the way in which the subject of the admonitions inside the Mexican team was treated:

"Yesterday we talked with the boys and our position was clear, we have to play each ball as if it were the last and if you go to the ball and in the process there is a yellow card you have to accept it, but if you have to be from the first minute Not only attentive, because I'm sure the boys are, but if willing to play every ball as it was in the previous game. That factor for tomorrow will not stop us in selecting a player. "

When it was questioned whether to pay more attention to the opponent or get the most out of the Mexican players, the national coach said:

"Totally that of taking advantage of the Mexican players, our team, we always give an importance to the rival, I would say

Well written,

It is possible, yes, but to steal a point on the road is really hard.

USA is beatable, they not as good as they use to be even with super star kid Christian Pulisic and Clint Dempsey.

Bruce Arena has always disrespected us, time to shut him up.

Mexico's Rafael Marquez among 22 sanctioned for drug trafficking ties
AP

MEXICO CITY -- The U.S. Department of Treasury on Wednesday said that Mexico international defender Rafa Marquez is among 22 people sanctioned for alleged ties to drug trafficking.

The Treasury said in a statement that it will also sanction 43 entities in Mexico, including a football club and casino.

The sanctions are the result of a multi-year investigation of the drug trafficking organization allegedly headed by Raul Flores Hernandez.

It is the single largest such designation of a drug trafficking organization ever by its Office of Foreign Assets Control, the statement said.

Marquez is a former Barcelona and New York Red Bulls star who currently plays for the Mexican club Atlas in Guadalajara and is captain of the Mexican national team.

Flores Hernandez allegedly operated independently in the northern city of Guadalajara, but maintained alliances with the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels. Federal drug trafficking indictments against Flores Hernandez were returned in March in Washington and the southern district of California.

The U.S. government referred to Marquez and Norteno singer Julio Cesar Alvarez, better known as Julion Alvarez, as people with longstanding relationships with Flores Hernandez, who "have acted as front persons for him and his [drug trafficking organization] and held assets on their behalf.''

The sanctions freeze all U.S. assets of the people and entities named and forbid U.S. citizens from doing business with them.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Ah hear ya.

However, either way, it is having a profound and immediate impact on his career. He was supposed to play tomorrow night and he won't be on the team sheet.

There is also a local process that Mexican authorities will initiate through their equivalent state and federal entities. Baller won't be able to sleep well. It shows in his face. He's tormented. In Mexico Rafa Marquez has represented a figure and image of immense rectitude. The mere announcement of this matter has disillusioned some and confirmed the frailty and vulnerability of all segments of society to narco-institutions. The nexus is not in doubt. What's in question is whether he had knowledge.

For a player that has ambitions of playing at the next World Cup, this is a very disruptive matter. Particularly for a 38 year old player.
