Correct.

Captained the WI youth team to Eng. in 1974.
Scored a century in the first "Test."

Amazingly there was no tournament that year when they selected the team.

CIC brushes aside Mucurapo.
T&T Guardian Reports.

St Mary’s College has set up a mouth-watering contest with arch rivals Fatima in the Coca Cola National InterCol play-offs next week after brushing aside East Mucurapo 3-1 yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.

The usually outstanding Tyrese Spicer was among the goal scorers for the Saints on the afternoon, along with Devon Charles and Michel Poon-Angeron. East Mucurapo, who earned promotion to next year’s Premier Division fought hard in the encounter but could only manage a solitary item from Jelani Ferari in the 56th minute. Coach Dales said afterwards that the better team won on the day.

The win has set up a showdown between the schools at the same venue on November 16.

In the other match at the Stadium, Fatima thrashed Malick Secondary 3-0. Mikhail Mc Comie scored in the 35th minute to send his team to the interval with a 1-0 advantage. And afterwards Jean-Heim Mc See and Joshua Araujo sealed the win with goals in the 79th and 84th minutes.

In the sister isle of Tobago Bishops needed kicks from the penalty spot to turn back Roxborough Secondary 4-2 after the game ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time at Bon Accord.

Roxborough opened the scoring in the 42nd minute from Terrelle Collins and appeared to be heading for the win until Dominic Lyons equalised in the 81st minute.

RESULTS

St Mary’s College 3 (Tyrese Spicer 45+1, Devon Charles 80th, Michel Poon-Angeron 85th) vs East Mucurapo 1 (Jelani Ferary 56th)

Fatima 3 (Mikhail Mc Comie 35th, Jean Heim Mc See 79th, Joshua Arajo Wilson 84th) vs Malick 0

Bishops High 1 (Dominique Lyons 79th) vs Roxborough Sec 1
- Bishops win 4-2 on penalties)

Signal Hill vs Scarborough - (postponed)

‘Pres’ boy President hosts Presentation College.
T&T Guardian Reports.

“I want educated footballers. I want educated professionals, persons who engage in critical thinking at all times,” the words spoken by His Excellency Anthony Carmona as he welcomed the Secondary Schools Football League champions and his alma mater Presentation College to President’s House yesterday morning.

The successful squad filled the reception room which last year hosted Shiva Boys, the former title-holders. President Carmona has made it a custom to invite the premier division champions to his residence after the competition concludes. He has often used the opportunity of speaking to the young players as one to impart knowledge and urge them to focus on not only football, but school. This was no exception.

He told the students, “There is a sense of disconnect in the context of us not appreciating fully, as Trinidadians and Tobagonians, that sports and academia can walk hand in hand, and can be successful together.”

Having long advocated for a Caribbean Colleges League, President Carmona says he will now start talks with the Jamaican High Commission here in Trinidad to organise two matches, where the top school from T&T can travel to Jamaica for a match and vice versa. His announcement was met with a loud applause from the Presentation players.

This has been one of the best years in the school’s history. Not only has it won the SSFL Premier Division title, but it was also assessed the best secondary school in the Caribbean and its student Joel Kissoon, topped the region in the CAPE exam.

In highlighting the achievements of Trinbagonians, the President also called on citizens to be more supportive of local talent, and that includes local footballers. He said, “I have seen magic in the Football League that can match the magic of young players in Brazil, but we don’t ‘big up’ our people… Well listen, we have young players here who are just as good.”

President Carmona was presented with a Presentation College football jersey by captain of the team Jabari Gray. The President’s surname was printed on the front of it as he kissed the crest of his alma mater.

Gray noted the honour it was for him and his team to be invited to President’s House, but he also let His Excellency know how hard his school worked for the title. “We worked very hard for this. At a point in time, the season was very draining mentally and physically, but we know we had to keep on pushing through to gain victory,” he said.

Presentation will now take aim at winning the south Intercol.

Shiva demolish Moruga 11-0 in Intercol
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

Tyrell Baptiste netted a beaver-trick while Renaldo Edwards added a double as Shiva Boys began their campaign in the Coca Cola Intercol South Zone with a 11-0 demolition of Moruga, in the first game of a Zonal quarter-final double-header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

In yesterday’s fixture, Baptiste found the back of the net in the 27th, 63rd, 76th and 78th minutes, while Edwards got his name on the scoresheet in the 22nd and 58th.

Jude Phillip (23rd), Tyrell Emmanuel (49th), Judah Garcia (61st), Matthew Beal (73rd) and Aaron Rodney (85th) were the other goal-getters for Shiva Boys.

Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division winners Presentation San Fernando strolled past Point Fortin East 5-1 in the other game at Marabella, courtesy of a pair from Darnell Hospedales, and one apiece from Matthew Joseph, Jayie Shepherd and Aleem Barclay. St Anthony’s and QRC had comfortable victories in the North Zone quarter-final double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. St Anthony’s eliminated St Francis (formerly Belmont Boys) 3-0 while QRC took care of Trinity Moka 2-0, with items from Mikel Williams and Mark Robertson.

Cops visit Fyzabad Secondary

Cops visit Fyzabad Secondary
By Yvonne Webb (T&T Newsday)

Fraud Squad police yesterday made what was their second trip to the Fyzabad Secondary School where they seized documents as part of investigations that are ongoing into fraudulent acts to facilitate entry of students without the requisite academic qualification, into the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).

At 10 am, police led by Fraud Squad head Snr Supt Totaram Dookhie and including Insp Kent Ghisyawan, Sgts Earl Smith and Damien Thomas and PC Jointe went to the school where they spoke to several staff members and searched several offices and computers. Shortly before 4 pm, the school’s Principal Troy Jebodhsingh and its Sports Manager Nigel Lackhan were seen leaving the Siparia Road, Fyzabad school compound with the officers.

Investigations were prompted after rumours that two of the players on the Fyzo Tigers team were fraudulently registered as they did not have the necessary qualifications to gain admission into Lower Six. The school was subsequently suspended from the premier league and principal Jebodhsingh also pulled them from all other competitions until internal and external investigations are concluded.

Yesterday, president of the SSFL William Wallace said he was saddened that it had come to this. Wallace said what was bad is that children were engaged in the conspiracy and the message cannot be positive.

“That is the real unfortunate thing about all of this. From where we stand as educators and if we are supposed to be the change agents that we are, then these are not things you do. For us it is totally unacceptable and at the end of the day let the chips fall where it may.” He said that 4,000 students across the country are engaged in playing football at different levels and the message being sent to them is not positive.Asked whether it would have tainted the league’s reputation, Wallace said there are 16 schools playing at a premier division, another 40 plus engaged in the championship division and others in senior division under 16 and under 14.

Saying he was unaware of the Fraud Squad’s visit to the school yesterday, Wallace said he was not surprised because the police investigation is active.

“Can’t say I am too surprised at all, but I am very sad that it had to come to this.”

Carapichaima goes after InterCol semi-finals spot
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

Premier Division campaigners in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Carapichaima Secondary will go after a place in the semi-finals of the Coca Cola National InterCol play-off today when they face Presentation College of Chaguanas at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

The match, scheduled to be the feature clash of a double header at 5pm will follow an equally entertaining match-up between Chaguanas North and Gasparillo from 3pm.

Only last week ‘Pres’ prevailed to the quarters courtesy a convincing 4-0 victory over Couva East while Carapichaima booked their place in the quarters by virtue being the top ranked team in the Central Zone and the only school in the premier division from central.

The Carapichaima boys will be hoping to make up for their poor finish in the league, having finished middle of the 15-team standings starting this afternoon.

SSFL to engage stakeholders.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The principal and physical education teacher of Fyzabad Secondary were charged yesterday for a committing a grave foul in secondary schools football this season.

The penalty, however, is not a three-match ban.

Instead, Troy Jebodhsingh and Nigel Lakhan were each granted $120,000 bail with a $15,000 cash alternative and will return to court next week.

As they appeared at the San Fernando Magistrate Court, the president of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), William Wallace, was talking to Guardian Media Sports about plans for the league to plug the cracks that have allowed this sort of behavior to go on for decades.

The first plan Wallace has is to listen, and not just listen to his committee, but even those in other sports.

He said: “In terms of going forward, we will be looking to the Ministry of Education to tighten up on some things.

“We on our own [SSFL], would like to invite persons who have an interest in secondary schools cricket and persons in the football fraternity, who may have something to offer in terms of going forward.”

When it comes to the Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL), Wallace doesn’t have to go very far to find its president.

The SSCL president teaches at the same school as Wallace, Carapichaima East Secondary.

Speaking to GM Sports yesterday, Surujdath Mahabir noted the SSCL had a credentials committee with strict guidelines. He said the deadline for schools to submit credentials was November 30th this year, which gave the committee enough time to vet who would be playing next year and who would not.

Wallace said he would also seek the suggestions of those who watched the league each week.

“I would like to open it up to the public, persons who have been observing what has been happening over the years and if they have suggestions to make, we will gladly embrace those suggestions once they are workable and within the remit of the Ministry of Education,” he said.

The SSFL president also stressed again about the oncoming database, which would aim to keep track of all the student-footballers around the league.

He said: “If you [players] move from the north zone to the south zone, you will have an ID code that goes with you, so we will be able to track all of the players. Things like that will be able to help.”

He also said the SSFL’s constitution committee would look at the constitution of the league and see which areas could be tightened up.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Saints reach North Intercol final.
T&T Newsday Reports.

St Anthony’s and St Mary’s both advanced to the Coca Cola Secondary Schools Intercol north zonal final with identical results yesterday.

At St Mary’s Ground, St Anthony’s defeated Queen’s Royal College (QRC) 2-1. A penalty from Tyrese Bailey and Che Benny gave St Anthony’s a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Marc Robertson pulled a goal back for QRC early in the second half, but St Anthony’s held on for the win.

At Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, St Mary’s got past Fatima 2-1. Fatima opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Justin Araujo-Wilson. Tyrese Spicer levelled the match for St Mary’s in the 38th minute, before Gabriel Nanton found the winner in the 79th. It was a turnaround by St Mary’s who lost to Fatima 5-1 during the league competition.

There was a stunning upset in the east as Valencia Secondary beat Trinity College East in zonal semifinal action at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

Trinity East, who played in the premier division league competition this season, were favourites to defeat newly promoted Valencia who proved no pushovers.

Valencia took the lead in the 35th minute through Keegan Farrier, before Nickel Orr equalised just before halftime with a 44th minute item. The match had to be decided with a penalty shootout after regulation time ended 1-1. Valenica prevailed 5-4 on penalties and will face San Juan North in the east zone final.

In the second match of the double header at the Larry Gomes Stadium, San Juan North got past St Augustine Secondary 3-0. After a goalless first half, Renaldo Boyce opened the scoring in the 47th minute before Brandon Semper doubled San Juan’s advantage with a 51st minute goal. Boyce rounded off the scoring with an injury time strike.

In the Tobago zone semifinals, Speyside High defeated Goodwood Secondary 2-0, while Signal Hill edged Bishop’s High 1-0.

Fyzabad Secondary principal, teacher get bail on corruption charges
By Kevon Felmine (T&T Guardian)

A month after the Fyzabad Secondary School was booted from the Secondary Schools Football League for submitting false academic certificates for two players, principal Troy Jebodhsingh and physical education teacher Nigel Lakhan appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court on six charges of corruption.

Jebodhsingh and Lakhan were each granted $120,000 bail with a $15,000 cash alternative.

Jebodhsingh, 50, has 27 years with the Teaching Service Commission of which seven was spent as a principal. The father of two also served as a police officer for four years.

Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine read the charges that on September 6 at the Ministry of Education along Farrah Street, San Fernando, Jebodhsingh, being in a public office as the principal of the Fyzabad Secondary School, misbehaved by submitting A Level recommendation forms for 2017 O’Level results for two students to a School Supervisor III of at the St Patrick District Office of the Ministry of Education, knowing that they were not a bona_fide students of the Fyzabad Secondary School and was not qualified to pursue the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

Also, on September 5 at Guapo Road, Fyzabad, while as principal of the Fyzabad Secondary School, him being a member of Teaching Service Commission, contrary to the Education Act, did misbehave himself in public office by signing a declaration on a Secondary School Football League players’ form, authorising the students to participate in the Secondary School Football League’s premier league competition knowing they were not bona_fide students and were not qualified to pursue CAPE.

The charges against Lakhan, 40, a teacher for 21 years, were that on September 5 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, he submitted player registrations forms for the ineligible students, bearing the school’s stamp and the principal’s signature, knowing that they were false and intended to defraud. Also, at Guapo Road, Fyzabad, he intended to defraud with a forged Secondary School Football League’s player registration form bearing the school’s stamp and the signature of the principal.

Lakhan and Jebodhsingh were jointly charged with two offences that on September 5 at the Ministry of Education office along Farrah Street, San Fernando, they uttered false Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Secondary Education Certificates for January 2017 for the two players in contravention of the Forgery Act.

The charges against both accused were laid indictably, however, prosecutor Cleyon Seedan did not object to bail.

Jebodhsingh was represented by attorney Chateram Sinanan while Chris Ramlal stood for Lakhan.

Both lawyers protested against the arrest of their clients on Monday before warrants were issued. However, Seedan said the Fraud Squad investigators led by Sgt Smith were liaising with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The charges that occurred in Fyzabad were adjourned to November 22 at the Siparia Magistrates’ court while the Couva matters will be held at the Couva Magistrates’ Court on November 23. They are expected to return to the San Fernando court on November 28.

Fyzabad principal and PE teacher charged with six counts of fraud each over SSFL scandal.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Fyzabad Secondary principal Troy Jebodhsingh and physical education teacher Nigel Lakhan appeared before a San Fernando court today on multiple fraud-related offences related to their registration of school footballers Dez Jones and Maurice Dick.

Jones, a former Siparia Secondary student who captained Fyzabad Secondary this season, and Dick, a former Moruga Secondary student, were both enrolled in lower sixth form on the basis of fraudulent CXC transcripts, which claimed they had four passes each.

The Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Executive unearthed the discrepancy—after a probe was requested by Trinity College Moka—and the matter was relayed to the Ministry of Education and then the Fraud Squad. Fyzabad were ejected from the SSFL Premier Division while Jebodhsingh subsequently suspended his team’s entire football programme in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions.

Jebodsingh, 50, faces six charges which include four counts of misbehaviour in public office and two counts of uttering forged CXC certificates. The school principal, who was a police officer for four years, has been in the Teaching Service for 27 years. He was represented by attorney Chateram Sinanan.

Lakhan, 41, will also answer six charges, two counts of uttering forged certificates to school supervisor Zabeedah Abid, two for uttering forged application forms to the SSFL and two counts of forgery. The PE teacher has been a member of the Teaching Service for 21 years. He was represented by attorney Chris Ramlal.

The DPP on Wednesday evening advised the police to charge the two teachers, following investigations led by Head of the Fraud Squad, Totaram Dookhie. The charges were laid by Sergeant Earl Smith of the Fraud Squad.

Jones and Dick were questioned but not charged while coach Brian Williams, a Trinidad and Tobago national youth team coach and former Strike Squad standout, was not implicated.

Jones and Dick maintained that they had no part in the fraud. Both teenagers told Wired868, in an interview last month, that Lakhan requested their exam certificates and never returned them. They were then told that they would be allowed to enter Form Six at the school.

“I just carried what the school asked for, [which was] my original document and birth paper,” said Dick. “I don’t know what they did after that… It is really the administration in the school and whoever had my certificate at the time.”

Dick, who had just one CXC pass in physical education, was taking sixth form classes in business, accounts, physical education, entrepreneurship and communication when the fraud was discovered.

When last month Wired868 contacted Jones, who had two CXC passes, he was not sure what form or class he was supposed to be in—despite already being six weeks into the school term. When the Fraud Squad interviewed the two players, they are believed to have found Jones working on a construction site.

“They asked if I want to come back and play school football,” said Jones, in a previous interview. “And I said ‘yeah, I want to come and play.’ And then I went training…”

Lakhan and Fyzabad vice-principal Suresh Roopnarine told the SSFL that the two boys duped them and somehow danced around the process for vetting students, which saw their documents pass through the school’s screening committee, Principal Jebodhsingh and the school supervisor.

However, only Lakhan and Jebodhsingh will answer for the crime in court.

Both Jebodhsingh and Lakhan were placed on a total of TT$120,000 bail with a total cash alternative of TT$15,000. The principal’s bail will cover the matters in San Fernando and Siparia while Lakhan’s will cover the charges in the three areas, San Fernando, Couva and Siparia.

They will both reappear in the different courts next week.

Beal knocks champs out.
By Jonathon Matouk (Guardian).

A lone item from Matthew Beal was enough for Shiva boys Hindu College to triumph 1 nil over this season’s Secondary School’s Football League Premier Division champions, Presentation College, in the first match of the Coca Cola InterCol South Zone semi final double-header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella yesterday.

Beal, one of the two ineligible players that Shiva fielded throughout the Premier Division season, delivered a goal in the second half of regulation time to send Shiva through to the Coca Cola Intercol South Zone Final.

The team will play against Naparima College in next Thursday’s final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, after it ran out 4-1 winners against St. Benedict’s College in the other South Zone semi-final.

Midfielder Declan Marcelle opened the scoring for Naps’ in the seventh minute with a far-post strike that gifted his team a dream start.

Premier Division top scorer, Judah St. Louis then gave his team relief in the 57th minute with a well-placed shot from inside the 18-yard box.

After the team were cruising and seemed to be on their way to the final, Ronaldo McIntosh turned up the intensity, registering a quick brace (two goals) within a couple of minutes after a well-worked goal in the 69th minute and a header in the 76th minute.

Letting out his frustration for his team’s no-show, Keon Boney sent a rocket of a shot into the Naps’ goal to provide St Benedict’s a lone consolation goal in the 84th minute.

However, it was too little too late for St Benedict’s as the final whistle blew with the score reading 4-1.

Intercol action will be on hold for the weekend, until Monday, when national finals week will kick-off with Chaguanas North Secondary taking on Carapichaima East in the Central Zone Final at the Ato Boldon stadium from 5pm.

Shiva Boys out for revenge in Intercol.
By Stephon Nicholas (Newsday).

Shiva Boys booked their spot in the Coca Cola South Intercol final yesterday, edging Presentation College San Fernando 1-0 in the second match of a doubleheader at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Shiva Boys, who were deducted 14 points for improperly registering two players during the recently concluded Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division and subsequently relegated, were indebted to Matthew Beal who ironically was one of the footballers whose rregistration was protested.

Beal’s s second half strike was enough to separate the two teams yesterday and Shiva Boys will now meet Naparima College in the South Final on Thursday after the latter hammered St Benedict’s College 4-1 in the earlier match yesterday. Naparima’s Ronaldo McIntosh had a double while Declan Marcelle and Judah St Louis got one each. Keon Bony got St Benedict’s lone item.

Speaking to Newsday yesterday, Sheldon Maharaj, manager of Shiva Boys, said their team is extra motivated for the Intercol competition as they believe they are the best schools team in the country.

“Definitely, I mean during the Premiership, there were other schools such as QRC’s (coach) Mr (Nigel) Grovesnor stated after he played us that our team is a cut above the rest and this is something that he stated outright. Many teams even Benedict’s said we should not be playing school football, we should be playing Pro League.

“They saw us as the dominant team and we come out to prove that we are the dominant team. We will prove that we had deserved to go out and win that Premiership. Unfortunate circumstances didn’t allow it, but we’re going to prove we have the best team and we’re going to prove it in the Intercol. We’re out to prove something.”

Maharaj noted that had it not been for any deductions in the Premier Division, Shiva Boys would have retained their SSFL title comfortably. He said his players are all highly motivated and they are competing with a chip on their shoulder.

“They themselves want to prove (something). They know their capabilities,” he said.

same situation as Mason for Shiva.

They were registered correctly, supposedly, weeks later.
So I believe they are both eligible now

The admins of the teams that were penalised just lapsed big time

Pleasantville win Girls Big 5; ‘Caps’ cop Central Intercol
T&T Newsday Reports.

Pleasantville Secondary captured the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) First Citizens-sponsored Girls Big 5 crown yesterday, after a narrow 2-1 win over St Augustine in the final at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

An own goal, as well as a strike from Aliyah Pascall, was enough to guide Pleasantville to the title.

Joel Maloney, coach of Pleasantville, praised the work of his team as they came up trumps against the highly-fancied St Augustine outfit. “The team played well, they followed instructions and executed perfectly,” said Maloney. “It was a hard victory.”

Pleasantville will now turn their attention towards a Girls South Zone Intercol contest against Penal Secondary. “Hopefully we can get another trophy,” Maloney stated.

The Pleasantville-St Augustine was the first game of a double-header, with Carapichaima East and Chaguanas North squaring off, in the latter match, in the Coca Cola Boys Intercol Central Zone final. And it was Carapichaima East who were victorious, by a 4-2 margin, courtesy kicks from the penalty spot.

The scoreline read 2-2 at the end of regulation time, with Theophilus Bourne and Josiah King finding the back of the net for Carapichaima East, while Zidane Martin and Malique Robinson were the goal-getters for Chaguanas North.

But Carapichaima East held their nerves in the penalty shootout, as they booked a spot in the National Intercol competition.

Caps take Central Inter-Col crown.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Carapichaima East Secondary are the Coca Cola Intercol champions of the Central Zone.

Yesterday, they needed penalties from the spot 4-2 to prevail over Chaguanas North Secondary in the final at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva, after the scores were knotted at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

After a fairly decent season in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) where it finished middle of the standings, Carapichaima were in the driver’s seat when Zidane Martin fired them into the lead in the 20th minute, a lead that they took to the interval.

But Chaguanas, beaten twice by its counterparts last year, stormed back with the equaliser in the 49th minute as they remained determined to gain revenge. And in the 76th minute the Chaguanas boys placed one hand on the title when Mikhail Robinson gave his team the advantage for the first time in the game 2-1.

However Theophilus Boyce, the usually prolific Carapichaima striker, spoiled the Chaguanas North party when he found the equaliser with three minutes left on the clock.

Carapichama later prevailed 4-2 from the spot to set up an entertaining semifinal encounter with the winner of the Naparima College/Shiva Boys South final scheduled for Thursday at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

After the game Randolph Boyce the Carapichaima coach said he felt extremely pleased with the victory. He said his side was up against a really defensively disciplined Chaguanas team and had to dig deep to eek out the victory.

“Chaguanas were discipline today, packing its defence and playing off the counter-attack. They had us trailing late in the game but our boys kept their composure and won the game in the end,” Boyce said.

He congratulated Chaguanas on the challenge, saying its football is in good hands.

Today action continues with finals in the North Zone, a mouth-watering contest between St Mary’s and St Anthony’s at 3.30 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, while a champion will also be crowned in the Tobago Zone when Speyside and Signal Hill will clash at 4 pm at Plymouth.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

CIC wins ‘battle of the saints’.
By Jonathon Matouk (Guardian).

St Mary’s College (CIC) are the CocaCola InterCol North Zone champions, following a 1-0 win over St Anthony’s College yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain.

A lone goal from Tyrese Spicer in the final minute of regulation time was enough to gift CIC its first North Zone InterCol title since 1989.

The boys in the blue and white stripes entered the “battle of the saints” as the underdogs of the match-up, despite winning the previous encounter of the two teams 2-1 on the final day of the Premier Division season.

However, from the early stages of the encounter, it was clear to see why the team was given that label.

St Anthony’s dominated proceedings and will only have itself to blame for failing to score the numerous chances that the team created.

For the entirety of the match the “Tigers” kept the pressure on CIC, but shockingly the team failed to score any of the chances awarded to them.

Those missed chances would haunt St Anthony’s as CIC struck on a late counter attack.

Spicer was played in on goal with only the keeper to beat, and he sent a brilliant left-footed strike to the bottom corner passed the outstretched hands of Jabari Brice to send the CIC faithful into a frenzy at the stadium. At the final whistle, those fans would storm the field in celebration of the school’s first title in 28 years.

The title win is CIC’s eighth ever, adding to its previous successes in 1964, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1986, 1988, and 1989.

Elsewhere, in Tobago, Signal Hill Secondary captured the CocaCola InterCol Tobago Zone title after a 1-0 win against Tobago rival Speyside High in Plymouth.

Conversely to the match in Trinidad, there were no late minute strikes in the match-up.

The goal came early for Signal Hill, as Jelanie James struck a right-footed shot into the Speyside net inside five minutes.

Signal Hill managed to hold on to the 1 nil lead until the half, and despite some late Speyside scares in the second half the team held on for the victory.

The victory meant Signal Hill Secondary secured its second consecutive Tobago Zone Intercol title and the schools sixth since the turn of the twenty first century (2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011).

Today, San Juan North Secondary will take an important step in its National InterCol title defence, when it faces Valencia Secondary in the East Zone finals from 3.30 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima.

Saints edge Tigers for North Intercol crown.

Tyrese Spicer’s blistering left-footed strike found the back of the net in the 90th minute to give St Mary’s a 1-0 win over St Anthony’s in the Coca Cola North Zone final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.

Spicer raced behind two defenders to collect a ball from the middle and, from the edge of the penalty area, unleashed a powerful shot which flew past the outstretched right hand of goalkeeper Jabari Brice and into the back of the net.

In a post-game interview, Spicer said, “I can’t explain this feeling. I’ll like to thank God and my teammates for everything they have done.”

St Mary’s coach Ryan Shim acknowledged that the players were keen to claim the crown, after they finished 6th in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division title.

“Everybody on the team was gearing up for this match,” said Shim. “We played some good defensive football and we were ready for (the game).”

And indeed it was a hard-fought game with few clear-cut chances for either team.

St Anthony’s striker Jaydon Prowell mistimed his jump and failed to keep down his headed chance, from a Che Benny freekick, in the 18th, and a minute later, Spicer collected a through ball from Gabriel Nanton but shot straight at Brice.

Benny forced St Mary’s goalie Regaleo Holder to produce a magnificent save from his 66th minute freekick, and Spicer’s left-footed effort was parried by Brice in the 73rd.

Prowell had a good chance to put the “Westmoorings Tigers” ahead in the 87th, with a left-footed shot which was denied by the “Saints” goalie, and that miss proved costly as Spicer atoned for his earlier errors with a clinical finish.

Over in the sister isle, Signal Hill retained the Tobago Zone Intercol crown after defeating Speyside 1-0 at the Black Rock Recreation Ground, Courland. Jalanie James struck in the first half to guarantee Signal Hill’s passage to the National Intercol competition (featuring the five Zonal winners), which will get going next week.

Today, the focus will be on the East Zone Intercol category, with San Juan North opposing Valencia High in the final, from 3.30 pm, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

The last Zonal Intercol final will be contested tomorrow with Shiva Boys facing Naparima from 3.30 pm at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
