Secondary Schools Football League kicks off tomorrow.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

THE 2017 season of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) will kick off tomorrow with a Premier Division double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

At 3 pm, Carapichaima East will square off against Fatima while, two hours later, reigning champions Shiva Boys will tackle Naparima.

The other Round One matches will take place on Saturday, all starting at 3.40 pm – St Benedict’s versus St Anthony’s, Speyside versus QRC, St Mary’s versus St Augustine, Fyzabad versus Trinity College Moka, Trinity College East versus Signal Hill and Presentation College San Fernando versus San Juan North.

The 2017 season was launched yesterday at the National Cycling Centre, Couva and SSFL president William Wallace, in his feature address, promised those gathered that its website will be up and running in a few days.

He added, “the (Trinidad and Tobago Football Association) has met with us and has agreed on the inevitable, that is acknowledgment that the SSFL has a major role to play in youth development.

To this end, a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) is currently being drafted which speaks to both organisations working together in the area of Coaches Education and Player Development.” Wallace also pointed out that a number of coaches were certified by the TT FA, an initiative which received assistance by sponsors Coca- Cola.

He also revealed that at least one member of the technical staff from each school will be trained as a “first responder”, in the event of a major injury or incident affecting a player on the field of play.

Representatives from the 2017 SSFL sponsors also spoke at the launch – Lisa Guissepi, marketing manager of Digicel; Tanya Lee, head of marketing at SportsMax, Jinelle Holloway, product manager of First Citizens; Aneka Mentor, community relations advisor at Shell and Maritza Ballack, marketing activation manager at Coca-Cola.

SSFL access on Play Go app.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Football fans will have access to matches in this year’s Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) at their fingertips through Digicel’s Play Go app.

At yesterday’s launch of the league at the Call Room of the National Cycling Centre in Couva, Digicel’s Marketing Manager Lisa Giuseppi said they are in the business of making meaningful contributions by connecting you to your loved ones, and connecting you to entertainment in the comfort of your homes or in the palm of your hands. As such fans can download the app from their respective store free of charge and tune in through Sportsmax.

Giuseppi said her company’s partnership with the SSFL is viewed as an investment in our people which is why they eagerly accepted the opportunity three years ago. “For us it exemplifies our ethos; giving back to the communities were serve: investing in the future of this twin island nation and nurturing and developing the youth in sport from grass root to professional” Giuseppi explained.

The league kicks off with a double header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva tomorrow (Friday), in which last year’s InterCol Champions Shiva Boys Hindu College will be up against southern rival Naparima College in the feature game at 5pm in the Premier Division. In the opening match Carapichaima East Secondary will take on Fatima College from 3pm.

Jamaican Sports Network Sportsmax is also bracing for an exciting season, giving a promise that it will broadcast 21 matches of the Premier Division and the Intercol. Tanya Lee, Head of Marketing at Sportsmax said her company will also honour a commitment to air the Girls InterCol final live, based on a request by Anthony Creed, the ex SSFL president last year and because she believes in the development of women in sports.

She said the SSFL has been a mainstay in their sports inventory, to the point where it is the third largest investment in sports. “Just to show how much of a mainstay this will be for us, Sportsmax ‘s investment in high school sports is the third largest monetary investment within our catalogue of sports rights, bettered only by our investments in La Liga and the NBA” Lee explained.

In their 10 years-plus of existence the cable channel has benefited tremendously from T&T’s involvement, as its second market when it expanded beyond the shores of Jamaica in 2007. Lee told a large gathering that included president of the SSFL William Wallace, members from various sponsors such as Coca Cola, First Citizens, Shell, executives of the SSFL, student players from various schools, teachers and coaches that some 1.3 million people from 25 countries in the Caribbean will be viewing the SSFL premiership and intercol matches in time to come.

SSFL gets its own office.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Acknowledging the important role the Secondary School Football League (SSFL) plays in the development of young people, president of the SSFL William Wallace announced that an office at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva was given to them to conduct their administrative affairs by Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith.

Speaking at the launch of the league at the Call Room of the National Cycling Centre (NCC) Wallace told a large gathering that his executives are now in the process of constructing its own website for the league, while the parent T&T Football Association is in the process of drafting up Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the SSFL for coaching education to be given to the school coaches.

Wallace who has been an executive of the schools’ league for many years, said the football association met with them recently to acknowledge the role the SSFL has played in the overall development of the sport and to form a partnership between the parties.

He said coaches in the league, for the first time last month, were made to do a C- Prep License for coaches with no qualifications; C License and a B License. It was the first time the courses were ever done in T&T, Wallace said.

He urged the young players to accept the fact that they will encounter players who will be better than them in the league. He also urged players to accept that there will be failures and that they should use these failures to appreciate their achievements.

Meanwhile, Jenelle Holloway, Product Manager Marketing at First Citizens said her organization will be offering $45, 000 in new nEo Youth Savings Accounts to players from the Premier League of the SSFL and will educate them about the importance of habitual savings and managing their finances. In the past the bank facilitated nEo financial tours at 20 schools that participated in the league, where they took the opportunity to educate students on sound financial planning.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Shiva Boys hunt Naps in SSFL opener.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

“It will be quite simple today; just go out there and win” Sheldon Maharaj, the Shiva Boys Hindu College manager said yesterday ahead of today’s opening clash with arch rivals Naparima College from 5pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva.

His confidence is not only because they defeated Naps for the Premier Division’s South Zone League title last year, but rather because they will be fielding basically their same team from last year, having lost just two players in defenders Shaquille Williams and Jerome Samuel.

“The core of our team is still there which means we still have our a powerful team. We are aware of Naparima and what they have to offer but we are the south champions, and while we will respect them, like we will give any other team, we are going out to start with a victory” Maharaj explained.

The game will be the feature match of a double header at the Couva venue, and will follow a 3pm match-up between Carapichaima East Secondary and Fatima College, which were spared relegation to the Championship Division based on a technicality.

Shiva coach Haydon Ryan has beefed up his team by recruiting midfielder Jude Phillips from Pleasantville Secondary and attacking midfielder Kierron Mason from Naparima, and have been hard in training for the past two months in preparation for a an even more difficult season than last year. Maharaj said both Phillips and Mason are likely to be on the starting team today, but he will be looking forward for a good overall performance from the team.

The Premier Division this season will include 16, and not the normal 15 teams, because the League took a decision not to demote San Juan North Secondary.

Action in the league will begin officially tomorrow (Saturday) with matches in the different zones across T&T, but Championship Division matches will kick-off next Friday.

Shiva Boys begin SSFL defence today.
T&T Newsday Reports.

HAYDEN Ryan, coach of defending Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division winners, Shiva Boys, says his team will focus on one match at a time this season.

Shiva Boys, who won their first Premier Division title last year, will open the 2017 season today at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. Shiva Boys face southern rivals Naparima at 5 pm in the second match of a double header. In the first match Carapichaima East will tackle Fatima from 3 pm.

Ryan, speaking to Newsday yesterday, said: “As long as all goes well we are in it. I am the humble type of coach that will take one game at a time.” Ryan said most of last year’s team are returning this year, but if they don’t unite as a team they will not play at a high level.

“One of the things that I have learnt about chemistry is that it takes a degree of gelling and coming together. It does not matter how much years people play together, if they don’t have that unity and the love then that could be a slight issue. But I guess we have it so I am expecting the guys to flow tomorrow.”

Phillip helps Shiva trick Naps in thriller.
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

Reigning champions Shiva Boys scored a late winner against Naparima College to walk away with a thrilling 2-1 victory in their opening clash of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division competition at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva last evening.

Shiva led 1-0 until the 69th minute when Naps equalised through a wonderful free kick from Keshorn Murphy. Their joy was however short lived as Jude Phillip - ran down the right side beat an offside trap and scored with just seven minutes to go.

Naps started well and made some searching runs into the Shiva penalty area but was unlucky. In the seventh minute Ronaldo McIntosh struck the bar much to the excitement of the Naparima fans who were out in their numbers.

However, in the 14th minute against the run of play Junior Asson scored to give Shiva the lead. After this close range strike Naps came to life looking for an equaliser and for the rest of the half the game was played in Shiva’s half.

The teams went into the locker room with the score 1-0 in favour of Shiva Boys.

Earlier, the first clash between Fatima College and Carapichaima East failed the capture the attention of the crowd, as both teams looked very short of work.

Carapichaima though looked the better of the two and it showed in the final score of 2-0.

The wet turf at the stadium foiled good ball control but Kevon Williams was able to open the doors in the 21st when he netted for Caps.

Fatima tried in vain to level the scores but when the half time whistle went, the score remained 1-0.

On the resumption, Fatima started to push men forward in an attempt to equalise and this left them thin in the back. Elijah King needed no invitation and in the 65th he doubled and the score. Fatima had some near misses towards the end of the match but it was the team from central that recorded a comfortable 2-0 triumph.

FYZABAD SECONDARY and St Anthony’s College steered their teams to comfortable victories as action in the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division continued yesterday.

The heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the Port of Spain area affected one fixture -- the St Mary’s/St Augustine match, scheduled for Serpentine Road, which was postponed due to a waterlogged field.
But the five other matches kicked off, yielding three victories and two draws.

Down South, “Fyzo” took care of business against Trinity College Moka with a 3-1 result.

There, Sharkeel Louison sent coach Brian Williams’ team into the lead in the 10th minute. Trinity’s Saleem Henry converted a penalty in the 51st but it was a short-lived 1-1 scoreline, as Ntinni Jones gave Fyzabad the go-ahead goal one minute later. Maurice Dick rounded out the scoring for the winners.

Shiva Boys drops a handful on Speyside.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

South Zone League champions Shiva Boys Hindu College demolished Speyside High 5-0 for their second victory in as many matches in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) at yesterday.

And afterwards Shiva manager Sheldon Maharaj said despite the victory his team has shown some areas that need working on ahead of their next encounter with Fyzabad Secondary on Saturday.

Playing at the Speyside Recreation Ground, Tobago, the Southerners silenced the home crowd from as early in the 16th minute when Judah Garcia fired in the opener. With little to no resistance from the home-team the visitors grabbed a second goal from Kierron Mason in the 24th minute before securing a 3-0 cushion from Quinn Rodney in the 39th that took them to the half-time interval.

Junior Assoon and Tyrel Baptiste added two more goals after the break to complete the rout and shift their focus to Saturday’s encounter with Fyzabad, which were also winners on the day, defeating Fatima College 1-0 at Fyzabad grounds.

At QRC ground, the home team rebounded from their disappointing 0-2 loss to Speyside on Saturday last to a convincing 3-1 triumph over Trinity College Moka, courtesy a double strike by John Paul Rushford in the 3rd and 44th and another from Anfernee Stokes in the 44th. Wendell David, the QRC manager said the scoreline was not a correct reflection of the match as his team should have scored a lot more goals. The Royalians will next be at home to San Juan North Secondary on Saturday.

The biggest shock of the day however came from the West mooring Ground where the home team St Anthony’s College were clobbered 3-1 by unlikely Carapichaima East Secondary in front their home fans.

At Lewis Street in San Fernando south giants Naparima College also stormed back from a 1-2 defeat in the opening match, to a comfortable 2-0 win over Trinity College East. Ronaldo Mc Intosh got the opening goal in the 16th and Judah St Louis sealed the win with a 66th minute item.

Speyside: Travel woes won’t set us back; Signal Hill make satisfactory away start.
By Sean Taylor (Wired868).

Speyside High School, one of two Tobago schools in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League this year, has plans to bring at least one national title back to the sister isle.

But travelling between the islands is a problem that can potentially put paid to those plans, money for travelling between the two islands, to be more precise. According to Speyside coach Kerry Lynch, funding from the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has yet to be approved for the team to travel to Trinidad during the current season.

“I calculated [the cost],” he told Wired868 last week. “It’s $40,000 to go down to Trinidad seven times. The SSFL informed me that I have to submit our budgets for the plane tickets, the times and how much (sic) persons so I already have a letter drafted; it’s just to drop it in [to the THA] now.”

Speyside is not alone in its woes but at least it has some breathing space. Fellow Tobago Premiership participant Signal Hill Secondary, proud winners of six national titles, are in the same boat. Unlike Speyside, however, they were bound for Trinidad in round one and came away with one point from their game against Trinity College East.

Speyside, in contrast, had a full week before they travel to Trinidad for the first time for this season—their assignment a tough one against the other Trinity College in lonely Moka. In the first round, they had what proved to be a not-too-tricky assignment at home to the Nigel Grosvenor-coached Queen’s Royal College, as they won 2-0.

Grosvenor, who led St Anthony’s College to five of their six national championships, told Wired868 that he and his new charges have had no issues making the trip across the Gulf. And he implied that suggesting that you might get money from the League before the start of the season was macaroni-pie-in-the-sky talk.

“The thing is you don’t get that money one time,” said Grosvenor. “You put out the money and then you get it back. That is how it works.

“The onus is on them if they want to play in the Premier Division or not. It’s only so much the League will help them out with and they would have to find the funds for the rest.”

The Signal Hill authorities seem to have got the same memo as Grovesnor. Manager Quasi Duke told Wired868 that their travelling expenses were already accounted for and, in fact, they purchased tickets for all their trips to Trinidad last Wednesday.

“I’ve now got tickets for the entire season,” said Duke. “My thing was more urgent because we [had to travel to Trinidad for our opening game] on Saturday.”

Signal Hill coach Nigel De Souza confirmed that there was no money problem although, when they first approached the THA—as Duke revealed—they were told that there was no money allocated for that purpose.

“When the initial talks started, they said that they don’t have money to give the Tobago teams to go to Trinidad and play football,” said De Souza. “They were saying that they don’t have money. It’s a reflection of what is taking place right now.”

“But as of now, we have the funds to [travel].”

For Speyside and Lynch, there is no such peace of mind as the negotiation process is still ongoing. But Lynch hastened to point out that the real issue was not simply not having enough money to travel but the myriad inconveniences that come with not receiving funds up front.

“It is imperative that we get the assistance and the approval very early,” he insisted. “Year before last year, there were times when we overnight in the airport, reaching in 2 ‘o’ clock in the morning on the last flight and guys have to leave from the airport and reach quite Charlotteville because Speyside is up in the East.”

Wired868 was informed that, since the SSFL’s Premier League was established in 2014, the administration and the THA have both struggled with the logistics of getting Tobago teams across the seas. As a result, there were no Tobago teams in the first year as no one was certain about how the travel bills would be paid and no one wanted to run the risk of finding himself saddled with a huge debt.

Which explains why the Speyside authorities are so insistent that a THA intervention is absolutely vital. Up to Thursday, they had had no word from the THA and Wired868’s efforts to contact Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles or members of the SSFL Executive yielded no fruit.

Lynch, however, remains optimistic that they will receive the funds this week, before they leave for their Trinity challenge. Pointing out that Signal Hill had had “no trouble getting through with their tickets,” he expressed the hope that the same will prove true for his school.

“I believe we will get the tickets,” he confided to Wired868 last week, “at some time during the course of the week.”

The coach stopped short of saying so in words but his optimism is not limited to what will happen with funding. He made it clear that, whether or not there are issues with getting his team to and from Trinidad, on the field at least they will ensure that, for Speyside, things go swimmingly.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Angus Eve said that it is a shame that there's no pro-team from the sister isle in the pro-league. The very complain from the schools is very much one of the reason.

BHS' field needs to be re-done. That plan is in the works. No football being played at Shaw Park by order. Mason Hall field is too small to have most matches including U14.

Shiva Boys stay perfect in SSFL.
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

Defending champion Shiva Boys Hindu College stayed perfect after three matches. Kierron Mason scored twice from the penalty spot to deny Fyzabad Secondary when competition in the Premier Division of the Shell/First Citizens Bank Secondary Schools Football League resumed at the David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal, yesterday.

Both schools went into the match with six points from two victories each, but Shiva Boys had a better goal difference at the top of the 16-team table.

However, Mason made no mistake with his spot kicks in the 7th and 68th minutes of the contest.

Carapichaima East Secondary also suffered its first loss going under to winless Trinity College East in Trincity 3-0.

After the visitors scored an own-goal, the host got on the scoresheet through Nickel Orr and Tyrese Williams in the 46th and 86th minutes respectively.

Presentation College moves into second place after a comfortable 4-1 win over St Mary’s College at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. Akeal Jacobs was in brilliant form for Presentation as he netted a hattrick with goals in the 14th, 21st and 25th minutes to give his school the much needed three points.

Also getting on the scoresheet was Jaiye Sheppard, who closed out the victory with a 70th minute strike. Devon Charles, who scored the visitors equalising goal, was later ejected before the first half ended by the referee.

Elsewhere, Naparima College went under 2-1 to Fatima College which got a goals from Mikhail McCommie and Justin Araujo-Wilson in the 24th and 84th minutes to hand the southern team its second loss in as many games.

Out at Moka in Maraval, Keshawn St. Rose was good enough to notch a double which lead his team to a 2-1 win over Speyside. Kerry McDonald scored for the Tobago outfit.

Belmont Boys becomes St Francis College

yes, meh Breds "Big Bird" Brown said it is true. I missed out on that piece of info. Jeez, from a football point of view, the RC church should of renamed them Belmont Intermediate. Not that I have anything against Francis of Assisi. Oh well St. Francis!

Pleasantville whips Moruga in South Zone
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Three different players were on target to lead Pleasantville Secondary to a comfortable 3-0 defeat of Moruga Secondary when matches in the Boys’ Championship Division of the 2017 Secondary Schools Football League kicked off on Friday.

Shane Baldeo opened the scoring for Pleasantville in the 40th minute and a minute later Sherwin Andrews doubled the lead in the South Zone encounter before Jabari Hodge added a third item on the hour mark to seal all three points.

In the two other South matches, Princes Town West and Pt Fortin East battled to a goalless draw while Siparia West and Fyzabad Anglican drew 1-1.

In the East Zone, Zidane Liverpool netted a goal in each half to inspire Holy Cross College to a 3-0 blanking of Five Rivers Secondary, with Trevis Byron, also on target while Keagan Faria also scored twice for Valencia Secondary in a 4-1 spanking of El Dorado East.

Up in the North Zone, there were wins for former national Inter-Col and League champions, Malick Secondary and East Mucurapo, 3-1 and 2-1 over Diego Martin North and St Francis College, respectively.

In the Central Zone, Chaguanas North edged long-time zonal perennial kings Presentation College 1-0; Gasparillo battled past Couva East 2-1 and Cunupia Secondary pipped Tabaquite 1-0.

And in the Tobago Zone on Saturday, Goodwood Secondary spanked Scarborough Secondary 5-0; Bishop’s High School hammered Mason Hall Secondary 4-1 and Roxborough Secondary got a 1-0 win over Pentecostal Light & Life 0.

Charles targets Bishop’s.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

Led by Aalliyah Charles, Bishop’s High School got off to a positive start in the Tobago Zone of the Secondary Schoolgirls Football League (SSFL) on the weekend and today, the striker will be called upon again when it faces Mason Hall Secondary at Plymouth ground from 3 pm.

Both Bishop’s and Mason Hall opened their Championship division campaigns with wins against Goodwood Secondary and Pentecostal Light and Life, respectively.

Charles produced four goals in Bishop’s 6-0 thumping of Goodwood while duo Anika Thomas and Curirisa Campbell netted a pair of goals each to get Mason Hall comfortably past the Pentecostal team, 6-2.

Pentecostal Light and Life will get a break today as it is on a bye but Goodwood will host Scarborough Secondary, which is coming off an applauding 4-1 win over Speyside High. The Speyside unit will look to regroup when its travels to Signal Hill, which is opening its account for the season.

Back in Trinidad, in the North Zone, Tranquility equipped with articulate scorer Kadijah Lewis, will go after its second straight win when it hosts St Francois Girls from 3.45 pm. Lewis impressed in her team’s opener on Sunday against rival Diego Martin Central, hitting 10 goals in the 13-1 win.

Diego Martin is hoping to be better prepared for St Joseph Convent, which went under to Bishop’s Anstey (5-2). In the other match, Bishop’s tackles Success Laventille.

A combined team effort from the Success Laventille girls saw them outplay St Francois, 4-1. Fillsha Lestle, Shermia Alexander, Keda Gift and Latepha Sydney were all on target for the winner.

In the East, St George’s College will be challenged by St Augustine and Valencia hosts Bishop’s Anstey.

There will be no play in the South Zone as matches carded for today were postponed. In a release yesterday sent by the SSFL, the postponement was due to the passing of Kyle Carabon, a referee of South Zone, whose funeral service will be held today in Rio Claro.

Shiva Boys make it four on the trot.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Five different players were on the scoresheet as title holders, Shiva Boys Hindu College whipped Queen’s Royal College (QRC) 5-1 for a fourth straight as they continued their defence of their Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division yesterday.

Junior Assoon opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Shiva Boys while Quinn Rodney made it 2-0 to the defending champions in the 31st at the David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal. Five minutes into the second-half, Tyrell Baptiste made it 3-0 to the host while Jude Phillip (55th) and Yohannes Richardson (72nd) added to the tally before Marquis Lewis got an 83rd minute consolation for the Royalians

The win lifted Shiva Boys to maximum 12 points from four matches to remain the lone team with a 100 per cent winning record in the 16-team competition, two points more than fellow southerns, Presentation College who blanked Signal Hill 3-0 at Guaracara park, Pointe-a-Pierre led by a double from Omri Baird.

Baired netted in the 19th and 40th while Ackeel Jacob added a 54th minute item. National Inter-Col champions, San Juan North Secondary were the biggest winners on the day after they hammered Trinity Moka, 7-0 at its Bourg Mulatresse Ground, San Juan.

Shiva Boys tough to beat this season.
By Colin Murray (Guardian).

The 2017 Secondary Schools Football League has started with the usual hustle and shebang that we have grown accustomed to over the years.

After Round 3, the table is taking on a familiar look with defending champions Shiva Boys on top having won all their games. Presentation College San Fernando are up there again followed by the “Green Machine” and the “Tigers”.

Having been privy to doing commentary on a few games on Sportsmax and CNC3 involving some of the top teams, Shiva Boys are going to be tough to beat. They possess a good defence with Yohannes Richardson and Jabari Graham in the central position tough to break down.

Their goalkeeper Denzil Smith is a national player and going forward they have creative individuals in Judah Garcia and Tyrel ‘Pappy’ Emmanuel. Quinn Rodney and Ronaldo Edwards are quick in the wide areas. They bring a strong all-rounded team capable of weathering this season’s storm.

Naps are also a talented team with their captain and central defender Rondell Payne solid at the back together with Tyrike Andrews.

They however tend to lack the fight when things are not going well and with the loss of their top goal scorer from 2016 Isaiah Lee, they are hoping that Ronaldo McIntosh will step up and consistently score goals.

Losing to Fatima was a huge setback for them and their credentials as serious title contenders must be brought into question.

Newly promoted Carapichaima East has started well. They looked good against a very timid and out of sorts Fatima team.

In Daniel Pascall, they have a worker up front who will fight for every ball and with Elijah and Josiah King attacking from wide areas, they will pose a problem for teams.

Fatima did not look the part in their first outing and if they are to maintain their form following their surprising victory against Naps, they must show more resilience.

They also need to have Justin Araujo-Wilson on the field for 90 minutes. He is a proven goal scorer and together with the speedy Stephon Marcano, they will test the ability of many defenders.

Defending National Intercol champions San Juan North are unbeaten but still awaiting their first victory. They are a talented team with Renaldo Boyce and Brandon Semper an excellent pairing up front and will score goals when the opportunities arise.

Defensively Kyle Thomas, Kareem John and Lukeman Brooks are tough at the back but they lose concentration easily and give up silly goals whenever they seem to be comfortably in charge.

St Mary’s should be difficult to beat on their day. In Gabriel Nanton they have a quality midfielder and a goal poacher in Devon Charles.

I expect them to improve and be more consistent as the season goes along.

St Augustine have played 2, won 2 and were heading for a comfortable victory leading 3-0 at half time against a lacklustre St Benedict’s outfit. St Benedict’s suddenly decided to play with some purpose in the second half and nearly came to stealing a point, going down 4-2 in the end. If the La Romaine boys are to pull off another great escape, they must show some spunk going forward.

In future articles we will feature more of the teams. It’s been a great start to the SSFL—already some super goals and surprising results!

Lewis, Charles on target in Girls SSFL.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

Shania Lewis was in a scoring mood on Thursday and so was Aalliyah Charles for their teams in their respective Zonal matches in the Secondary Schoolgirls Football League.

Lewis notched five goals for Tranquility Government School in its huge 11-0 win over St Francois Girls in the North Zone while in action in Tobago, Charles netted four in Bishop’s High easy 5-0 victory against Mason Hall at Plymouth ground.

It was the second straight win for Tranquility, which on Sunday in the opening round defeated rival Diego Martin Central 13-1. Lewis was well supported by Selicia King who put in three and got two from Iysha Lewis.

The other goal came off of Megan Diaz.

In other matches in the North, Leah Dos Santos and Arissa Romany scored a pair of goals each in Bishop’ Anstey 6-1 win over Success Laventille while St Joseph Convent topped Diego Martin, 5-2.

Over in the Tobago Zone, Bishop’s High earned its second straight victory as well having beaten Goodwood 6-0 then thanks to four goals from Charles. She was her accurate self again and with support from Darianne Henry, who scored the other goal, dominated Mason Hall.

Also getting wins were Signal Hill and Scarborough Secondary, who defeated Speyside High and Goodwood, respectively.

Jelese Alexander slotted in a double in Signal Hill’s 5-0 win while Scarborough led by Mya Alfred, who scored two goals as well, toppled Goodwood, 5-1.

Jalene Sobers also had a vibrant performance for Bishop’s Anstey in the East Zone.

She scored all four goals in her team’s 4-0 win over Valencia. In the other match, St Augustine whipped St George’s College, 13-0.
