Mason double keeps Shiva Boys perfect.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Kierron Mason netted a double to lead Shiva Boys Hindu College to a 2-0 blanking of Trinity College of Moka Maraval for a fifth straight win in the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division yesterday.

On very heavy surface at Maraval, made difficult by the mid-day rainfall, Shiva Boys were kept at bay until five minutes into the second-half when Mason broke the deadlock, and three minutes into time added one, he converted a penalty-kick to push the Hayden Ryan-coached team to maximum 15 points from five matches in the 16-team competition, two points more than fellow southerners, Presentation College who battled past Carapichaima East Secondary 2-1 blanked Signal Hill 3-0 at Guaracara park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Omri Baird opened the scoring for Presentation with his third item in two matches as early as the first minute, but Mecaheil Alexander got Carapichaima East level in the tenth, only for Jaiye Shepperd to get the decisive item for in the 31st.

In perhaps the match of the season so far, Juda St Louis scored a second-half to rally Naparima College to a 3-2 win over St Augustine Secondary after trailing 2-0 at home.

Stephon Eallie fired the”Green Machine” ahead in the 42nd minute and Anthony Samuel then doubled the advantage in the 63rd before St Louis took charge with items in the 76th, 80th and 90th minute for an unlikely win.

Over in Tobago, visitors St Mary’s College battled to a 3-2 win over host Signal Hill thanks to a brace from substitute, Tyrese Spicer.

Devon Charles netted the first “Saints” goal while Akil Frank (penalty) and Tareek Richards scored for Signal Hill.

Still in Tobago, Kishorn Hackshaw scored a goal in each-half and Kernell Sween, the other for Trinity East in a 3-0 defeat of Speyside.

In other matches, Fatima blanked Queen’s Royal College 2-0 with Luke Darwent and national Under-17 player Jean-Heim Mc Fee the scorers while St Benedict’s and San Juan North drew 1-1; and Trinity East hammered Speyside.

Yesterday’s Shell/First Citizens SSFL Premier Results:

Naparima 3 (Judah St Louis 76th, 80th, 90th) vs St Augustine Sec 2 (Stephon Eallie 42nd, Anthony Samuel 63rd)

‘Pres’, ‘Naps’ clash in South derby

‘Pres’, ‘Naps’ clash in South derby
By Roger Seepersad (T&T Express)

Presentation College San Fernando came off a gruelling contest against Carapichaima East Secondary on Saturday with full points but will head into today’s South derby against Naparima College at Manny Ramjohn Stadium without Omri Baird and Shirwin Noel after both players were shown red cards on Saturday.

‘Pres’ sit second on the 16-team Shell/First Citizens Secondary School Football League (SSFL) Premier Division table on 13 points, two less than defending champions and current leaders Shiva Boys Hindu College. Apart from a 2-2 draw in the opening game of the season against San Juan North Secondary, Pres have been dominant, winning their last four games to stay close to Shiva at the top.

Baird opened the scoring for ‘Pres’ on Saturday before getting a red card in the second half of the contest. Jaiye Shepperd scored the decisive goal in the match to ensure Pres stayed in the title hunt.

They will have little time to catch their breath with another tough encounter today against Naps, who battle from two goals down on Saturday to beat St Augustine Secondary 3-2 thanks to second half hattrick from Judah St Louis.

Stephon Eallie put St Augustine ahead in the 42nd minute before Anthony Samuel put them 2-0 up in the 63rd.

St Louis brought Naps back into the match with goals in the 76th and 80th minutes before scoring the winner in the 90th.

Naps don’t have the same consistency as Pres. Before Saturday, Naps were held to a 2-2 draw by St Anthony’s College before that, they went under 2-1 against Fatima College. However, they will be confident of stringing together a few more positive results after Saturday’s unlikely victory.

Meanwhile, Shiva and San Juan will be putting their unbeaten tags on the line today when the two teams square off in San Juan. Shiva have maintained a perfect record so far this season with five wins in five matches while San Juan haven’t lost a game with one win and four draws. San Juan are fifth on the table on seven points and above them are Fatima College (9) and Fyzabad Secondary (9).

Fatima, who came away 2-0 winners against Signal Hill on Saturday, have managed to win their previous three games and will be favourites to overcome struggling Trinity College Moka. Meanwhile, Fyzabad did not see action over the weekend with their game in Westmoorings being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. They face St Augustine Secondary in St Augustine today. All matches kick off at 3.40 p.m.

Today’s SSFL Premier Division matches

St Benedict’s College vs Signal Hill Secondary, Barrackpore

Fatima College vs Trinity College Moka, Mucurapo

St Mary’s College vs Carapichaima East Sec, Serpentine Road

Trinity College East vs QRC, Trincity

Presentation College San Fernando vs Naparima College, Manny Ramjohn Stadium

St Anthony’s College vs Speyside High, Westmoorings

St Augustine Secondary vs Fyzabad Secondary, St Augustine

San Juan North Sec vs Shiva Boys Hindu College, San Juan

Noticed that B moble is the sponsor of one of the teams.

How can a state company be so selective in choosing who it wants to sponsor in the league?

How can state money be used so selectively when it is taxpayers' monies? That is BS to the highest.

They may as well sponsor every team in the league or just sponsor the league.

To sponsor a team or a few teams is irresponsible for a state company.

SOS for Tobago football.
By Colin Murray.

Has anyone looked closely at the Seconday Schools Football League (SSFL) table after five rounds of hard fought football by these youngsters?

What stood out for me is the positions of the Tobago schools—Signal Hill and Speyside. Signal Hill are rock bottom and Speyside just three positions above them.

After both teams did well in their opening fixtures, they have lost four consecutive matches; even worse is they have lost home games.

In the past, one feared going to Tobago to play against school teams no matter what age group from Under 14, Under 16 and the senior division.

The fear was that the Tobago boys would be bigger, stronger and eager to prove they were better than their Trinidad counterparts.

Signal Hill boasts of some of the most talented footballers ever to grace the schools league, the most famous being Dwight Yorke, but tactically they were well-coached, organised and their home was like a fortress.

Tobagonian Bertille St Clair is one of the best coaches this country produced.

I remember having some real battles for Fatima with Bertille but only on few occasions we got the better of him.

Scarborough Secondary was promoted a few years ago and has gone back down; now Speyside has come up and they are struggling.

I am hoping that the executive of the SSFL, in particular President William Wallace, a man whom I have the highest regard for as he served with me as 2nd Vice President of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) from 2005 until 2009—one of the most successful periods in T&T cricket history—will keep a sharp eye on what is happening with Tobago football.

Let me make it clear that I have not seen either of those teams play and I am only going by their results but if the trend continues, they could both be heading out of the Premier division and back into the championship which would be disastrous for Tobago school football.

We need to ensure that those boys continue to get top level competition in order for them to shine through and for us to produce another Yorke one day.

I have always felt that Tobago has been neglected in all sporting disciplines.

In cricket, they have produced some excellent players but in recent years no one seems to be making a breakthrough especially at senior level and I am unsure as to the type of assistance the athletes in Tobago receive.

I hope I am not getting paranoid about the Tobago schools and it’s just a blimp in their performances, but if it continues I hope that the executive can give them the necessary help they may need. We need a strong Tobago to have a competitive SSFL.

A moment of madness

On another note, a moment of madness erupted in the game between Presentation College San Fernando and Carapichaima East Secondary last Saturday where a fight broke out between players of both teams.

I have seen players square up before as the game is emotional but when suddenly punches are thrown à la Mike Tyson and a player floored, it goes beyond passion and fight takes on a different meaning.

Kudos to young referee Kwinsi Williams and his team of officials who I thought handled the situation magnificently.

He also had to put up with two team officials running onto the field who should have been dismissed from the technical area.

He eventually correctly dismissed four players—two from either side and my only disappointment was those two officials weren’t removed.

Let us now await the ruling of the disciplinary committee to see what punishment is handed out.

I hope to never witness that again on the field of Secondary Schools football.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Shiva Boys still lead after protest defeat.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Defending champions, Shiva Boys Hindu College endured a difficult day on and off the football field, but at the end of it all, the southerners still lead the 16-team Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division table on goal-difference from southern rivals, Presentation College of San Fernando and Naparima College, with all three teams on 13 points after six matches.

Having started the day on maximum 15 points from five matches, Shiva Boys was first informed that the SSFL Disciplinary Committee (DC) delibrating on a protest against it. After hearing evidence presented in the matter regarding the eligibility of its player Kierron Mason in the match against Naparima on September 9, 2017 the DC decided that the player was ineligible to represent the school as a player in that game, and therefore the result (2-1 to Shiva Boys) was overturned and Naparima College was award the win (3 points & 3 goals).

The letter informed Shiva Boys that the school had the rights to appeal, and it must be done in writing within seventy-two (72) hours of receipt of the email to the Appeals Committee” accompanied by a fee of $1,000.

Such fee shall be refunded if the appeal is successful while pending the hearing of such an appeal, the decision stands.

The Hayden Ryan-coach Shiva Boys then had a chance to take out their anger on the playing field against National Inter-Col champions San Juan North Secondary, however, both teams failed to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw at San Juan North’s Bourg Mulatresse Ground.

With the points deduction from the protest and then the point earned in a drawn match, Shiva Boys improved to 13 points, the same as Presentation College, who then wasted a chance to open a cushion in a 2-1 loss to Naparima College at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Presentation which began the afternoon top of the table after Shiva’s protest defeat took the lead as early as the second minute through national Under-20 player Jordan Riley, but Judah St Louis then got “Naps” level with the first of two well struck free-kicks before he netted from dead-ball in the 37th for a 2-1 half-time lead after which his team held on for the win.

Taking full advantage at the confusion at the top of the standings were Fatima College, St Anthony’s College, Trinity College East, St Augustine Secondary and Carapichaima East, who all won.

Naps starts U-14 with 12-1 win.
By Vinode Mamchan (Guardian).

Naparima College made a magnificent start to the Secondary Schools Under-14 football league when they hammered Fyzabad Anglican Secondary 12-1 at Lewis Street in San Fernando on Friday.

Leading the way for Naps was Molik Khan who scored an amazing six goals.

He was well supported up front by Kern Cedeno who netted four times, while there were single strikes for Nirvan Ramnarine and Terrel Rajoon.

While Naps peppered the Fyzabad net, their goalkeeper Joshua Dowlath was very good between the sticks and kept the opposition at bay.

Sports administrator at Naparima College Percy Samlalsingh told Guardian Media that he is very pleased with the development programme that the school has in place and the young players are pointing to a bright future. “At Naparima College we are all about a balance with the academics and sport.

We try to do things properly here as this has been drilled into us by principal Dr. Michael Dowlath and we are starting to see the results.”

Samlalsingh added that although Naps have a young team in the Premier league this season, he sees no reason why they can’t win every title that is before them.

“We have a young team this season but still we have retained 11 players from last year.

These guys have the experience and talent, so I see no reason why we can’t go on and win every title that is before us.”

Last season Naps won the Digicel Play Big-4 and finished second to Shiva Boys in the league. In the Intercol, they were beaten by penalty kicks in the semi-finals of the South Zone.

SSFL players suspended for fracas.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Four players were handed suspensions by the disciplinary committee of the Secondary Schools Football League yesterday following a fracas that broke out on the field during a clash with Carapichaima East Secondary and Presentation College last Saturday at Carapichaima Ground.

Carapichaima midfielder Theophilus Bourne and defender Brandon St Clair, as well as Presentation’s Omri Baird and Sherwin Noel were handed red cards for their involvement in an on-the-field fight, but after a careful assessment of the incident, the League’s disciplinary committee upgraded the penalty by slapping St Clair with a four-match suspension, while Bourne, Baird and Noel were hit with two-match suspensions.

Both schools are allowed three days in which to lodge an appeal but it must be accompanied by a fee of $1, 000. Contacted Ashbert Charles of Carapichaima said his school will not be appealing the decision although he felt Bourne had been unfairly hit with the suspension. ‘Pres’ manager Andre Benjamin echoed similar sentiments on the punishment but he too said Omri was merely a by-stander in the incident.

Mario John hails the SSFL.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

Former Queen’s Royal College goalkeeper from the 1993/94 period, Mario John has paid tribute to the Secondary Schools Football League for helping shape his career from footballer to medical practitioner.

Dr John is currently medical director of Hughston Clinic, Oviedo, located at Oviedo Medical Centre in Florida. He completed his general surgery internship at Harlem Hospital in New York City before completing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC.

John played in the Championship Division and Intercol competitions in 1993 and 1994 and played in the Under 14 division in 1987.

“Participating in the SSFL game me a solid foundation that made me a success today. It gave me the opportunity to obtain a football scholarship to prepare me for a lifetime of academic pursuits,” John said.

“That discipline during that era gave me the purpose and drive to be a success during all the years of rigorous academic pursuits. I credit that time to my coaches and teachers. Most importantly my SSFL era bought me closer to my community and allowed to make alliances with fellow players, relationships that I cherish today.

“I think the SSFL is a great stepping stone for our young footballers to gain recognition whether via national football, going professional or obtaining scholarships as a means of financial aid to get a proper education.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Benny shows up twice as Tigers, Royalians share honours.
By Rachael Thompson-King (Guardian).

The pint-size forward Che Benny looped in a long-range shot in the final minute to earn 10-man St Anthony’s College a 3-3 draw with hosts Queen’s Royal College in a highly competitive match in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday in St Clair.

It was Benny’s second goal in the intense affair that saw the “Westmoorings Tigers” come-from-behind to tie the score and deny Nigel Grosvenor-coached QRC its second win of the season.

Grosvenor, though disappointed with not getting the win, appreciated the draw and was more impressed by the effort of his young team.

“They are inexperienced but the are playing with passion,” said the former coach of St Anthony’s College after the match. “They are a talented bunch, today (yesterday) was very good.”

QRC got on the scoresheet first when “Man of the Match” captain Anfernee Stokes, connected a low header through goalkeeper Jabari Brice’s legs in the 15th minute from a free kick on the right side. The lead was short-lived after a fumble by QRC’s keeper Jermaine McNeil allowed St Anthony’s to level the score thanks to a long- range shot from Tyrese Bailey.

“We have been plagued by soft goals all season but I can’t come down on him (McNeil), he is just 15 years old,” said Grosvenor of his inexperienced custodian. “After our main keeper got injured we basically threw him in the lion’s den but he is doing well.”

Another bad judgment by keeper McNeil saw him bring down a player inside the box. Benny stepped up and connected the penalty to give St Anthony’s a 2-1 lead which it held on to at the half.

Play remained just as intense in the second session with both teams having their fair share of missed chances and frustration seemed to seep onto the field.

It was a penalty in the 60th from Stokes that tied scores 2-2 before Randy Harris gave QRC the go ahead goal in a scramble on the line.

St Anthony’s knew they would need something great in the final moments of the match and that it got from Benny, who, from a free kick, placed the ball in the left-hand corner away from a visibly disappointed McNeil.

Over at Mucurapo Road in Port-of-Spain, Premier Division leader Shiva Boys’ Hindu College made light work of Fatima College to maintain their top position, winning 4-1. Quinn Rodney (24th), Tyrel Emmanuel (67th), Ronaldo Edwards (90th) and Kierron Mason (92nd) were on target for the Shiva Boys’ team.

The southerners now move to 16 points after seven matches and hold a slim advantage by goal difference to arch rivals Presentation College, after a three-point advantage was taken away from them by virtue of losing in the protest room last week.

Presentation continued its impressive run with a narrow 3-2 victory over hosts Fyzabad Secondary.

It was a good evening for St Benedict’s as it pulled off its first win of the season defeating hosts Carapichaima East 3-1. Scoring for the winner were Reuel Tyson in the 19th, Jaycee Paras in the 70th and Keon Boney in the 91st.

Kevon Williams scored the lone item for “Caps”, a penalty in the 77th minute.

Minute silence as mark of respect to Clive Pantin

The SSFL expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Clive Pantin following his passing yesterday.

Pantin was a former footballer and past national player, a sportsman and an avid supporter of the SSFL. He was a past principal of Fatima College and a former Minister of Education. He was also the founder of Foundation for the Enhancement and Enrichment of Life (FEEL).

As a mark of respect, there will be a minute’s silence before kick off at all SSFL matches today.

Tigers climb to fourth, Saints stun Green Machine.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

North Zone duo, St Anthony’s College and rivals St Mary’s College both picked up 4-1 wins over visiting Fyzabad Secondary and St Augustine Secondary in two rescheduled Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division matches, yesterday.

Down at Morne Coco Road, Westmoorings, host St Anthony’s coasted to victory with inform national youth team player, Che Benny among the goals once more.

Benny, who had a recent trial stint in Europe opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Joden Powell, another national youth team player doubled the advantage eight minutes before the half-time interval.

Jodel Brown extended the ‘Tigers’ advantage to 3-0 in the 75th minute before Des Jones pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 88th, only for Jordan Barclay to add a fourth item three minutes into time added-on.

With the win, St Anthony’s pushed its points tally to 14 from seven matches, two behind the trio of defending champions, Shiva Boys Hindu College, Presentation College of San Fernando and Naparima College.

At St Mary’s Ground, Serpentine Road, St Clair, St Mary’s denied the “Green Machine from going top of the table with similar 4-1 triumph. Matches resume tomorrow.

Pres takes in front.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Presentation College surged to the top of the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League yesterday when they thrashed Speyside High 3-0 in the sister-isle of Tobago, courtesy a double strike by Jayir Sheppard.

The southerners who went into yesterday’s encounter in second position on the standing on goal difference, got their third goal from Darnelle Hospedales which propelled them to a comfortable two-point lead on the table, after Shiva Boys Hindu College were clobbered away to Michael Grayson’s Trinity College East 3-1 at Henry Street Recreation Ground and Naparima College, which were among the three teams on 16 points yesterday, were held to a high-scoring 3-3 tie by St Benedict’s College at their Lewis Street home ground.

Naps who have now sunk to third with 17 points, stormed back to take the lead 2-1 after Jaycee Paras fired St Benedict’s into the lead in the 6th minute. Ronaldo Mc Intosh found the equalizer in the 17th minute before Jeron Francois’ 27th minute goal put them in front for the first time in the match. But the home team was unlucky to allow their opponents back into the game when Rondell Payne got the ball into his own net soon after the resumption for a 2-2 scoreline.

Later Payne thought he had made amends for his earlier blunder by giving Naps the lead a second time in the 38th minute. But Benedict’s did not give up and found the equalizer with Reuel Tyson’s 64th minute item for a share of the points.

At Arouca, Shiva Boys got the opening goal in the 31st minute when Judah Garcia found the nets for an early lead. But the home team stormed back with three unanswered goals from Trinity College East’s Kurdell Sweeen 79th, Stephon Hoyte 90th and Kishorn Hackshaw 93rd that pushed them to seventh with 13 points. The Penal team has now dropped to fourth on 16 points.

Meanwhile Che Benny guided St Anthony’s College to second on the table with a hat-trick in a more-than-convincing 6-2 triumph over Trinity College Moka in Maraval. Apart from Benny’s heroics, the Tigers also got goals from Jaydon Powell, Tyrese Bailey and Haile Beckles in the win.

Saints hit Speyside for six but Pres still leads Premiership.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Inexperienced Speyside goalkeeper Jonathan Thomas received a baptism of fire at the St Mary’s College Ground, St Clair, yesterday when he had six goals hammered past him in a 6-0 win for St Mary’s College over his team in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League.

In spite of this result and others around the league, Presentation College, San Fernando, maintained their top position on the standings with a come from behind 2-1 victory over Queen’s Royal College (QRC) at Guaracara Park, Point-A-Pierre. The win moves Pres to 22 points.

Previous leaders Shiva Boys Hindu College shared the points in a 2-2 draw with St Anthony’s College at Westmoorings to remain in fourth on 17 points while the Tigers dropped to third after Naparima shot-out Signal Hill 2-0 to move to second 20 with points.

At Serpentine Road in St Clair, Thomas found himself on the wrong side of an excellent display by the home team. Under stormy conditions, his team was in early trouble when striker Tyrese Spicer was put through a shaky Speyside defence in the 2nd minute, but lifted the ball over the crossbar before Thomas could reach him.

However, two minutes later Spicer made amends when speedy winger Nathaniel Williams stormed down the right flank and sent in a cross which Thomas parried into the path of Spicer for the game’s opening goal.

The Saints who struggled to find their form this season, got their second goal in the 15th minute when play-maker Gabriel Nanton threaded a ball through to Trey La Motte who beat the on-rushing Thomas with a grounder to the far post to spark wild celebrations.

Speyside had hardly recovered when the Saints got their third goal, courtesy La Motte. This time the talented St Mary’s striker benefited from a defensive blunder inside the area and with Thomas racing out to prevent further damage, La Motte fired it past him to the bottom right hand corner in the 16th minute.

Speyside, who earned promotion to the top flight division after an impressive display last year, had their key marksmen, brothers Kern and Kerry Mc Donald bugged down by a steady CIC defence as they trailed 0-3 at the end of the half.

Matters got progressively worst afterwards, when defender Seon Melville turned Williams’ right side cross past his own goalie for a 4-0 CIC advantage in the 55th minute. The Saints, who mounted more than 30 attacks on the Speyside goal area, were themselves guilty of leniency, or otherwise the scoreline may well have been in double digits.

Substitute Devon Charles completed the rout with goals in the 81st and 90th minute. First he darted in to head a left-side cross over a stranded Thomas, and later Charles received a pin-point cross from the left, which he quickly collected and slotted past the goalie.

Presentation remains out front with win.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Presentation College San Fernando maintained its top position in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League yesterday when it clobbered Trinity College Moka 3-1 at the Trinity ground in Maraval.

The win move them to 25 points, a mere two points advantage on their arch rivals Naparima College who were also winners on the day, edging Carapichaima 2-1 at their Lewis Street Recreation Ground home. Under coach Angus Eve, the dangerous Ronaldo Mc Intosh fired in two goals in the 53rd and 57rth minutes to assure them a come from behind victory, after the visitors snatched an early lead in the 8th minute from Theophilus Bourne. At QRC Ground in St Clair, the home team continued their decline on the standing, falling to their seven defeat 1-3 at the hands of arch rivals St Mary’s College under new coach Nigel Grovsnor at home.

Like they did in their previous two matches, the Royalians scored first when Miguel Williams found the nets in the 34th minute.

Thereafter it was all the Saints who found the equaliser on the stroke of half-time from Devon Charles, the scorer of two goals in their last 6-0 triumph over Speyside. And then Tyrese Spicer handed them the lead with his item in the 51st. The Royalians’ form this season was summed up by a horrific own-goal by Jabari Mitchell in the 69th minute which planted them firmly at the bottom of the standing with just five points from 10 matches.

Naps move into pole position.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

Naparima College is the new leader of the Premier Division in the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League after edging San Juan North, 1-0, when the teams met at Lewis Street in San Fernando, yesterday evening.

Judah St Louis netted the winner, a penalty in the second minute, to move his team to the top of the 16-team standings with 26 points from 11 matches, earning eight wins, two draws and suffering one loss.

“Naps” move to the head was part due to previous leader Presentation College falling to a 3-0 loss to defending champion Shiva Boys Hindu College at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Mareballa. After a goalless first half, Simeon De Bourgh got Shiva’s first item in the 55th minute. Some 20 minutes later, Yohannes Richardson put in his team’s second goal in 75th before Junior Asson sealed the victory in the 93rd.

Presentation slipped to second place with 25 points from 10 matches, followed by St Anthony’s College with 24, Shiva Boys and San Juan remain in fourth and fifth places with 23 and 18 points, respectively.

Queen’s Royal College (QRC) was the only other team that made some movement upwards on the table, jumping from the cellar spot to 14th place after comfortably beating St Benedicts, 4-1 thanks to a double from Miguel Williams.

He scored QRC’s opening goal in the 18th and later added another in the 54th. Joining him on the scoresheet were Kalev Kiel (20th) and John-Paul Rochford (76th).

In other matches, St Anthony’s College made full use of its home field advantage, grabbing a narrow 3-2 win over Trinity East at Morne Coco Road, Westmoorings; St Mary’s was held to a 3-3 draw by Trinity Moka at Serpentine Road in St Clair; host Carapichaima East defeated Fyzabad, 2-1; and Fatima edged home team St Augustine at Warren Street.

Over in Tobago, Signal Hill and Speyside could not be separated as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Yesterday’s matches:

Signal Hill 2 (Akiel Holford, Jabarry Francis) vs Speyside 2 (Stephon Antoine Kerry Macdonald).

St Anthony’s 3 (Nkosi Salandy 16th, Che Benny 20, Haile Beckles 57th) vs Trinity East 2 (Kishon Hacksaw 13th, Kendell Sween 71st).

Carapichaima East 2 vs Fyzabad 1 (Nicholas Blake 42nd)

St Augustine 0 vs Fatima 1 (Jean-hein McSee 68th).

Presentation 0 vs Shiva Boys 3 (Simeon Debourgh 55th, Yohannes Richardson 75th, Junior Asson 93rd).

Shiva Boys knock ‘Pres’ from summit.
By Nickolai Madray (Newsday).

Presentation College San Fernando are no longer the leaders of the Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division after falling to a 3-0 defeat to the hands of defending champions Shiva Boys Hindu College at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, yesterday.

The result paved a way for Naparima College to take the top spot when they recorded a crucial 1-0 home win over the previously unbeaten San Juan North Secondary.

In the top of the table clash between the current leaders and former leaders, the match started off tense as both teams tried not to make any errors and battled for the possession to control the game.

After a quiet first half which ended 0-0, Shiva Boys came out the dressing room with more urgency and they applied the pressure as they looked sharper on the ball.

The first breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Shiva’s Simmeon Debourgh latched on to a loose ball in the 18 yard and sent a powerful shot past Presentation’s goalkeeper. Yohanese Richardson then doubled Shiva Boys’ lead after brilliantly placing his free-kick into the back of the net in the 75th minute. Junior Asson added the third and final blow in the 93rd minute when he rounded Presentation’s last defender then lobbed the custodian to secure the victory. Presentation are now second on the table with 25 points while Shiva are fourth on 23 points after 11 games.

Naparima College made a quick start to their game and went ahead through Juda St Louis who slotted home a penalty kick in the second minute of the game.

San Juan North had visited the southerners as the only team undefeated thus far in the tournament, however, they left with nothing as Naps held on to the lead and claimed all three points. Naps now lead the standings with 26 points after 11 games while San Juan North remain in fifth with 18 points. Trinity East traveled to St Anthony’s where they lost 3-2 as the “Westmoorings Tigers” held on to third position with 24 points.

Elsewhere, Queens Royal College (QRC) demolished St Benedict’s College 4-1 in Debe while Fatima edged St Augustine Secondary 1-0 in St Augustine. Carapichaima East entertained Fyzabad where they defeated the visitors 2-1 at home. St Mary’s College (CIC) were held to a 3-3 draw by Trinity Moka in St Clair, while Signal Hill and Speyside also rallied to a 2-2 draw in their Tobagonian encounter.

Wallace: SSFL is combating all issues head-on.
By Jonathon Matouk (Guardian).

Throughout its 50-plus years of existence, the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) has been no stranger to controversies. Though the league is evolving and has enjoyed substantial commercial support, player eligibility disputes have hindered the league’s development.

A select few SSFL Premier Division teams continually disregard the player eligibility legislation imposed by the league, which has damaged the league’s image.

The SSFL Disciplinary Committee tries its best to discourage schools from engaging in the illegal practice but it is a combined lack of effort from all parties involved, which ensures player eligibility remains an issue.

SSFL president William Wallace believes the league is doing its best to combat the issue but he pointed out that league administrators rely on the principals to inform them about any irregularity that is taking place so that they can act upon them.

“We are grateful to have been able to get more people on the Credentials and Disciplinary Committees to come out so far, and they have taken time off to examine the documents that come to them,” he said.

“This year protests are being brought to the attention of the league quicker and the league can only respond to them depending on how timely we get the information.”

According to Wallace, “So far this season the SSFL has had to address one protest from Naparima about a player’s eligibility.”

Asked about the Trinity College, Moka and Fyzabad issue he explained: “The SSFL received information and we acted on that information and we continue to urge the principals to bring to our attention any concerns that they have on any issue because at the end of the day this is their league.”

Wallace revealed that on following up on Fyzabad’s use of player Maurice Dick, the SSFL Credentials Committee unearthed that both Dick and team-mate Dez Jones, were registered with the wrong documentation.

The school registered both players for the SSFL with transcripts that claimed they had four passes each which is needed to qualify to be Lower Sixth Form students at the school, when in actuality Jones and Dick were enrolled with two and one CXC passes, respectively.

As a result, nine points were taken away from Fyzabad after all the matches in which the players’ participated in were forfeited.

According to a school representative who spoke to Guardian Media Sports on the condition of anonymity said, “The league is trying its best to improve the Credentials process by implementing an online Credentials registration process and creating a Player’s pass that will be scanned by match commissioners in order to verify a player’s eligibility for a match. But the online registration process is a tedious one.”

However, the source believes that SSFL dealt with protests quicker last season than it is doing this season, which is a cause for concern.

In response, Wallace said, “The SSFL can only address concerns that are brought to it, but it is for the principals to lodge complaints. The SSFL beg its members to keep it informed about any situation or development.”

Last season, two ineligible players, Abdus Ramcharan and Kori Cupid of East Mucurapo Secondary and Presentation College (San Fernando), respectively, were fielded in a combined nine Premier Division games. The SSFL failed to recognise these infringements at the early stages of the competition and only addressed it after matter after protests were lodged by St Benedict’s and Naparima Colleges. St Benedict’s protested the use of Ramcharan and Naparima, the use of Cupid.

All of the matches that the players had participated in resulted in forfeited games for their respective schools.

It led to a radical change to the league final standings. The teams that were initially facing relegation, Queen’s Royal College (QRC) and Fatima College, ascended out of the demotion zone and were replaced with East Mucurapo and San Juan North.

The San Juan team eventually won an appeal before a general council committee to keep them in the league under the belief that the SSFL Credentials and Disciplinary committee failed to spot the wrong doing and act in an appropriate time.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

SSFL suspends Fyzabad as coach Brian Williams resigns.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Fyzabad Anglican Secondary School was yesterday suspended from the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with immediate effect for its use of utility player Dez Jones and key midfielder Maurice Dick, both of whom it alleged submitted false documents to gain entry in schools' Sixth Form.

Jones received two CSEC passes from the June/July exam in 2016, while Dick got just one pass from the same examination. Both required a further two and three passes respectively to earn entry at sixth form level, which were said to have been achieved at the CSEC exam in January 2017.

Speaking to Guardian Media Sports, SSFL president Williams Wallace said yesterday his league deliberated on the matter before making a decision that was based purely on the original CSEC certificates that showed the students/players had received. The players, however still maintained they submitted their original certificates showing two and one passes respectively, which in any event, would have prevented them from gaining places in the school's sixth form programme.

Wallace said apart from suspending the school from the league for the rest of the season, his league will also put the matter into the hands of the Ministry of Education for further investigation.

The SSFL will also sit in the near future to determine if the school will be debarred from participation in the Championship Division of the SSFL next year.

A release from the SSFL yesterday stated the league position was based on a "bogus certificate" the league received from the school over the past few days. Secretary Azaad Khan said,"It was clear to me that while the players' certificate for the 2016 CSEC exam was authentic, they were able to determine that the students did not sit exams in January of this year due to inconsistencies with the school centre number."

Khan also said, "That to earn entry at sixth form required a signature from a Supervisor from the Ministry of Education which would have seen the certificates of the young players. He is expected to deliver a report to the Ministry of Education this morning."

When Guardian Media Sports contacted Dick he said, "I was invited to play for the school by a school official while playing with Guaya United in the T&T Super League and I accepted the offer as I never played at the top flight league before. I was given the assurance that I would get in the school with just one pass. I don't know where that certificate with four passes came from, I don't know anything about that."

He continued, " I know people will not believe me, but I don't know what they did to get me in school. I don't know what is happening in the administration of the school but there is something wrong there."

Fyzabad coach Brian Williams submitted his resignation on Tuesday in the wake of the controversy, saying he does not condone such behaviour and he did not want to be in an institution where it is taking place. The former Strike Squad defender said he took up the job at Fyzabad some two months ago after being bombarded by teachers from the school and community members. He said because he has observed certain types of behaviours at the nation's schools, he made it clear that he did not want to have any part to play in the administration of the team.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
