Shiva Boys moves to fourth.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Shiva Boys Hindu College moved to fourth on the standing when they edged St Mary’s College 1-0 in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League at Morne Diablo Recreation Ground yesterday.

After a shock 1-4 defeat to Carapichaima at the weekend the south zone League winners in 2016, rebounded with a victory which came after a succession of missed chances that should have reflected a different scoreline. The usually dangerous Quin Rodney was guilty of two early missed chances in the first seven minutes, which had set the pace for an unluckily one-sided affair.

But their blushes were saved by Tyrell Baptiste who found the nets late in the 80th minute to push them to 25 points ahead of San Juan North Secondary.

With one more match to play against St Benedict’s College on Saturday, Shiva could only attain 28 points, providing an appeal against them for receiving a just warning by the SSFL’s Disciplinary Committee for the use of an improperly registered Kierron Mason, by Queen’s Royal College, is held up.

RESULTS:

Trinity College East-1 (Zachary Welch 72nd) vs Fatima-2 (Luke Boucaud 43rd, Nickel Orr 58th)

St Augustine-2 (Jeremiah Vidale 56th, Zion Holder 76th) vs Trinity College Moka- 1 (Keshorn St Rose 42nd)
Shiva Boys- 1 (Tyrell Baptiste 80th) vs St Mary’s- 0

East Mucurapo back in SSFL top flight.
By Jonathon Matouk (Guardian).

East Mucurapo and Valencia Secondary and Bishop’s High Schools have been guaranteed promotion to next year’s Secondary School’s Football League (SSFL) Premiership Division following favourable results in their penultimate round of matches in the Championship Division Boys Big- 5 Tournament, yesterday.

East Mucurapo travelled to the Woodford Lodge Recreational Ground in Chaguanas to shatter Chaguanas North Secondary’s promotion hopes after a 2-1 victory.

It was a tightly contested affair up until the 45th minute when Zidan Martin delivered the lead goal to break the deadlock as Changuanas North closed the first half with the advantage.

However, North Zone winner, East Mucurapo resumed the second session of play a rejuvenated bunch and answered when standout player, Zion McLeod scored the equalizer for the visitors in the 60th minute, and Kidane Lewis scored the winner five minutes from time to guarantee his team East Mucurapo return to the Premier Division.

East Mucurapo was relegated to the Championship Division in 2016 by the Disciplinary Committee of the SSFL for fielding an in eligible player.

Bishop’s High School and Valencia Secondary also secured promotion after their match-up ended in a 1-1 draw.

Andre Robinson gave Valencia Secondary an early 1-0 lead going in to the break, but Dominic Elias answered back early in the second half to guarantee his team a place in next season’s top division line-up. The result also meant that bottom-of-the-table Moruga Secondary will remain in the Championship Division.

The top three schools from the Big-5 Play-offs will be promoted after a round-robin round of play. Three teams from the SSFL top flight will be demoted back to their respective zones. Fyzabad was expelled last month and will not be counted in the three to be relegated.

We’re going up! East Mucurapo, Bishop’s HS and Valencia seal Premier Division places.
By Sean Taylor (Wired868).

Extraordinary scenes involving high fives and general jubilation among players and supporters of both camps marked the end of today’s SSFL Championship Division play-off at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima. You would have sworn that Valencia Secondary had put five or six goals past Bishop’s High School. Or vice-versa.

In fact, the two teams had battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, East Mucurapo Secondary beat Chaguanas North Secondary 2-1. And as that result trickled through to the players and fans in Arima, it set off the wild celebrations, with everyone jumping and screaming in celebration.

The three teams, Valencia, Bishop’s and Mucurapo will play in the Premier Division of the secondary Schools Football League next year.

It might have been the second-last round in the play-off group but everything was set up for the contest to be a sort of unofficial final.

Both sides were locked on four points before kick-off, with Bishop’s enjoying a +2 goal advantage on goal difference, one more than their rivals on the day. As long as Mucurapo won at the Ato Boldon, a draw would be enough for the two teams.

But neither team was prepared to leave its fate in other hands and both teams went for the win from the first whistle.

In the early stages, Valencia looked the more threatening outfit and only three minutes had passed on the clock when Keegan Faria stung the fingertips of Couran Roberts in the Bishop’s goal. Roberts wouldn’t be safe for long. A mere two minutes later, Akil Skeete picked out Andre Robinson with a through-ball from the edge of the area. Ghosting behind Ranaldo Johnson to control the ball, Robinson buried his shot in the back of the net.

One-nil to “Val-ee!”

As the first half wore on, however, Bishop’s began to settle and the Valencia midfield, a sea of orange moving forward in waves, seemed to stop pressing as much.

“I think both teams were a bit jaded,” Valencia head coach Roland Clarke told Wired868 after the match. “The SSFL is very strenuous on the young players because it is not a senior team or a professional team that is up to the task, it’s schoolboys. And the last four games back-to-back took a little toll.

“However, what we planned, I played a 4-3-3 to go at them from the beginning to get the goal which came early and, after that, you saw the tiredness step in with both teams. And well [Bishop’s] Tobago, we have to give credit to them, they made a [tactical] change, it worked for them and they got to come back into the game.”

Like Valencia, Bishop’s played a 4-3-3 formation, albeit a looser version, which saw players alternating roles and looking at times, particularly in counter-attack, as if they had reverted to a 4-4-2 set-up or a 4-5-1 shape.

In the first half, Collin Sargeant was Bishop’s main target. But Gabriel Baird and his midfielders seemed unafraid to play searching long-range passes in his general direction. Still, it wasn’t until the 36th minute that Richard Goddard’s troops almost equalised.

Valencia skipper Daniel La Croix conceded a cheap free kick 30 metres from goal and Baird’s free kick should have created the equaliser. However, with D’Abreau at his mercy, Johnson failed to get a touch at the near post and a certain goal went a-begging. He beat the ground in frustration.

But after the interval, Bishop’s wouldn’t have to wait long to get back on terms, finally getting the reward for their dangerous set-pieces. Captain and centre-back Dominique Lyons had been busy in the Bishop’s defence throughout the first half and that would continue throughout the afternoon.

As Adriel George stood over the ball for a 48th minute free kick, Lyons ran up into the opposing penalty area for the umpteenth time, hoping that George might pick him out. He did. And rising imperiously over his markers to sink his powerful header in the Valencia net. Lyons pumped his fist in celebration as ecstatic celebrations broke out in the stands át the visitors’ end.

“In the dressing room we had to talk about the fact that we’ve made it this far,” Richard Goddard told Wired868. “We’ve earned the right to be here and, after all of that, in order to get over the next hump, it’s not a case of style or flair or the back heels or the spanners and them kinda thing. It’s a case of who wants it and that header is kind of a symbol of who we became this year.”

After that, the match ebbed and flowed, with Goddard almost rewarded for his substitution in the 68th minute when Atiba Roberts, subbed on, nearly capitalised on a lapse in the Valencia defence. They recovered in time to block the shot.

With ten minutes to go, Valencia’s Faria bent a free kick from the left-wing that needed an intervention from Roberts to steer it over the bar.

“Come on, ‘Val-ee,’ keep it going, come on!!” shouted a fan from the stands. The men in orange almost obliged. Putting everything into a loose ball from ten metres outside of the area, La Croix saw his drive from distance just whizz frustratingly past the near post.

The endless running from both sides continued until deep into injury time but neither side could find the winner before the final blast of the referee’s whistle.

“We have one more game against East Mucurapo,” Goddard explained after the match, “and we’d like to make that match as competitive as possible.”

Then there is InterCol,” he continued. “We’d love to take it all the way and see how far we go in the rest of the competition. But as of right now, we’re going to celebrate and, maybe in a couple days, we’ll get ourselves back onto the field and back to work.”

On Friday, Mucurapo will face Bishop’s High School in Black Rock, Tobago while Moruga Secondary and Chaguanas North will play for nothing but pride in Moruga at the same time. Having played four matches in the past week, Valencia will have a well-deserved rest.

Pres hammers Trinity to stay alive.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Presentation College San Fernando did not disappoint in their second-to-last game of the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday, hammering Trinity College East 6-0 at home to hold on to a mathematical chance of winning the title.

They got double strikes from Ackeel Jacob in the 22nd and 87th minutes and the prolific Darnell Hospedales in the 33rd and 38th, with other goals coming from Omri Baird in the 32nd and Jayie Sheppard in the 74th, which assured them maximum points. The result ensured the southerners remain in third position on 29 points, just one behind leaders St Anthony’s and second Naparima College, both on 30 points but separated by goal difference.

Presentation will next face Fatima College tomorrow in their final game at Fatima Ground, needing to win to have a chance at clinching the title. A win will put them on 32 points, which means that they will only be assured of the precious silverware if St Anthony’s and Naparima are beaten tomorrow.

In another game yesterday lowly Trinity College Moka edged Signal Hill 1-0 in the sister-isle of Tobago to move to 11 points and out of the relegation zone. Their lone strike came from the boot of Keshoun St Rose in the 18th minute.

Results

Signal Hill 0 vs Trinity College Moka 1 (Keshoun St Rose 18th)

Presentation College 6 (Ackeel Jacob 22nd, 87th, Omri Baird 32nd, Darnell Hospedales 33rd, 38th, Jayie Sheppard 74th) vs Trinity College East 0

Upcoming Fixtures

(Saturday 4 November)

Has the desire to win gone to far?

Yes and No. If there is no desire to win, and be contented to be  runners up is a problem. On the other hand, to win at all cost is a problem. Cheating or claiming ignorance is detrimental to the integrity of the game.

Shiva Boys relegated after SSFL rejects “identity theft” argument for Beal

Shiva Boys relegated after SSFL rejects “identity theft” argument for second illegitimate player
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868.com)

Defending champions Shiva Boys Hindu College will be relegated from the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division at the end of the 2017 season, after their latest alleged administrative failing left the “Penal Princes” adrift at the bottom of the 15 team standings.

After hearings at Carapichaima East Secondary yesterday, the SSFL’s Disciplinary and Appeals Committees ruled that Shiva Boys be docked a combined total of 14 points for failing to properly register two players, central midfielder Kierron Mason and left-back Matthew Beal.

The ruling means Shiva Boys plunge from fourth place to last with a total of just nine points; and they have no chance of avoiding relegation on the closing day of the season tomorrow.

The beneficiaries near the foot of the table are Trinity College Moka and St Benedict’s College, who will both avoid the drop now. At the top of the table, meanwhile, Presentation College (San Fernando) go two points clear after their 3-0 on-the-field loss to Shiva Boys on 14 October became a 3-0 triumph in the boardroom.

Ironically, all three teams with a chance to clinch the title on Saturday—Presentation, St Anthony’s College and Naparima College—all benefitted from protests against Shiva Boys. The defending champions had defeated “Naps” and “Pres” and drawn 2-2 with the “Westmoorings Tigers.”

Today’s boardroom ruling centred on a Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) outing by Mason for Marabella Family Crisis Centre on Saturday 2 September; and a Southern Football Association (SFA) match played by Beal for Siparia Angels on the same day, which was 48 hours after the deadline for SSFL players to stop participating in Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA)-affiliated competitions.

The SSFL Constitution allows for schoolboys who played outside of the deadline to still be registered for its competition. However, schools must request clearance for such players, complete with the relevant paperwork from the league in question.

According to Article 16 of the SSFL Constitution, failure to do so is punishable by “Loss of points or even suspension from further participation in the League for the remainder of the season, as the Disciplinary Committee may decide.”

The Penal-based school had already lost six points this season after successful protests by Naparima College and St Anthony’s College for the improper use of Mason.

Shiva Boys principal Dexter Sakal, who handles the team’s administrative duties alongside manager Sheldon Maharaj, accepted responsibility for the Mason cock-up—which he said was an honest oversight rather than a deliberate attempt to get an advantage over the rest of the field.

His defence of Beal’s name appearing on a Siparia Angels team sheet on 2 September was far more interesting.

Sakal told the Disciplinary Committee that it was a case of identity theft. In an effort to strengthen Shiva Boys’ case, he produced another Siparia team sheet, on 23 September, which suggested that Beal had again represented the SFA team during the schoolboys’ season.

On that same day, though, Beal played for Shiva Boys in Moka where they defeated Trinity College Moka 2-0. And Sakal said the left-back was with the school team from about 11am until 9pm when they got back to Penal.

He said it proved the club was in the wrong.

“When we investigated, we realised that [Siparia Angels] had used another player under his name,” Sakal told Wired868. “The boy told us he didn’t play but we were worried until we saw that team list on 23 September. That proved what the club was doing…”

However, the Disciplinary Committee was not convinced that Sakal’s second team sheet was sufficient evidence to invalidate the first document, which suggested that Beal played for Siparia on 2 September.

There was also the matter of Shiva Boys application for Beal’s clearance from the SFA, which was made on 24 October and suggested that he had not been properly registered prior to that. Or does it?

“When we thought he had played, we got [the clearance],” said Sakal. “But then we realised there was an error and we didn’t need clearance. The boy always said that he didn’t play but we didn’t know what to think until we saw the second team list.”

It is uncertain whether Sakal will challenge the Disciplinary Committee’s verdict.

Yesterday, he refused to attend the Appeals Committee’s meeting on Mason on the grounds that it was illegal.

On 17 October, a two-man Disciplinary Committee panel, comprising SSFL general secretary Azaad Khan and North Zone secretary Roger Martin, pardoned Shiva Boys for their improper use of Mason throughout September. The decision was not communicated to the general membership.

The SSFL’s letter to Sakal gave its reasons for not deducting points as the Shiva Boys’ apology and acknowledgement that it had flouted the rules as well as the school’s “attempt to immediately procure the transfer certificate.”

Fatima College and Queen’s Royal College (QRC) subsequently protested the decision not to deduct points from Shiva Boys. But Sakal pointed out that the appeal was lodged more than 72 hours after the verdict and contended that, as a result, it should not have been heard.

“There is […] no justification for considering an appeal that is 72 hours late,” said Sakal. “I have written to the League asking that they provide an explanation but none has been provided.

“Given this situation, I feel that the Executive of the League are acting unlawfully and I will not be coerced into attending any appeal (hearing) that is unconstitutionally convened.”

However, Fatima and QRC countered that the timing of their appeal was no fault of theirs as they were not officially informed of the decision until a week after the fact.

SSFL president William Wallace admitted as much in an interview with Wired868 last month.

“Normally, a protest would come from a school and so when the matter is dealt with both schools—the protesting school and the one facing the protest—would be informed after the hearing,”  Wallace said on 25 October. “In this case, no school protested the matter; it was information that was picked up and dealt with directly by the Committee. So they just informed the school that was involved.

“But now that we have a third party interest, we asked [the Disciplinary Committee] to send [its decision] to everybody, especially the two schools who (had) enquired about the status of the matter.”

Whether or not the Disciplinary Committee’s decision was valid in the first place is also open to debate. There are allegations that, to start with, Martin was not a member of the committee while the question has been asked about whether two persons can legally constitute a quorum.

Arguably, Sakal’s position that he would not appeal the Mason decision could spare the SSFL Executive many blushes.

“I don’t feel I should commit my school to that kind of torture for football,” said Sakal. “Whatever happens, I will leave it there. This is a school and not a football club.

“At some point, I have to say enough is enough with the football and the distractions.”

Yet, in the end, it was the Beal case that proved to be the last nail in Shiva Boys’ coffin.

Even if the SSFL had ruled on behalf of Shiva Boys in all three challenges against Mason, Sakal and Maharaj’s failure to prove the whereabouts of their left-back on 2 September would have sunk them anyway since he played—supposedly without proper clearance—in 10 league matches.

Today’s boardroom decision capped off a bizarre season off the field for the schoolboys league and, unquestionably, the most disastrous title defence in the history of the competition.

Things went awry from Shiva Boys first match as ‘they used Mason off the bench in their 2-1 opening win over Naparima College although he had been registered as a student for barely 48 hours before kick-off.

SSFL rules state that players must be registered for at least 72 hours before they can properly compete.

The bigger problem, though, was that Mason’s TTSL outing for Marabella meant he was still unqualified as a player since proper clearance had not been sought by his school.

By the time Sakal and Maharaj caught on and submitted the appropriate paperwork, Shiva Boys had already played eight matches. So the school was forced to continue from there with zero points and just six matches remaining.

There was still opportunity for coach Hayden Ryan’s team to rescue their Premier Division status for the 2018 season by winning their remaining fixtures.

But then, like a thief in the night, came word of Beal’s registration issues. And Shiva Boys were deep in trouble.

Whispers about Beal’s eligibility, Wired868 is aware, had been making the rounds as far back as Monday 1 October. Somehow, it took the rumours three more weeks to get to Penal.

And, by the time Shiva Boys management team sprang into action and cleared the player on 24 October, there were just four games left, that proved to be insufficient time for the Penal Princes to save themselves from the drop.

Belatedly, Sakal argued that Beal didn’t need clearance at all and was the victim of some devious behaviour by his club, Siparia Angels. But he could not convince the SSFL Disciplinary Committee of the truth of his story.

There is, though, one sliver of hope.

Last season, San Juan North Secondary were set for demotion—based on the standings—but successfully petitioned their fellow teams to ignore the table and vote for them to stay up; they argued that they had been unfairly penalised owing to post-season boardroom decisions against East Mucurapo Secondary and Presentation which negatively affected their final placing.

Sakal and company can follow suit. They might appeal for the sympathy of their colleagues on the grounds that Shiva Boys never sought to cheat but had simply made a mess of the registration process.

If the first school to get wind of the Beal issue had shared the information with Sakal, the Penal school would be in mid-table today. But this does not change the fact that it was Shiva Boys’ error to begin with.

“This season started really well but then it didn’t go well,” Sakal told Wired868 on Monday 30 October. “We really stumbled this season [with] our off-field challenges which were more than our on-field challenges…

“At the beginning of the season, I said we have such a good team that the only ones who can beat us is ourselves and it turned out so true—not for the boys but the management, who made a couple of errors [that] cost us dearly.”

Should the current table reflect nothing but results on the field of play, Shiva Boys would today be tied with Presentation at the top of the standings and seeking their second successive title with an emphatic win over St Benedict’s on Saturday.

Had they managed it, they would have become only the second school to successfully defend the Premier Division crown, following Naparima’s back-to-back league trophies in 2014 and 2015.

Instead, owing to shoddy administrative work and a controversial team list, Shiva Boys are set to play in the lower division next season.

I really don't understand why these schools would go thru all this trouble when the standard of football is so low...it's not worth the trouble.

Personally I feel that these Principals should travel to Africa and bring back to Trinidad some talented players ..those players need help and many of them could speak six languages..look at those U17 African teams in the U17 WC them fellas look like grown men and play football like grown men.

More trouble looms for Shiva Boys.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

There are speculations circulating that Shiva Boys Hindu College may face further sanctions from the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).

The Premier Division defending champion is awaiting a decision by that the SSFL’s Disciplinary and Appeals Committees that may be docked points for failing to properly register two players, central midfielder Kierron Mason and left-back Matthew Beal.

Beal was supposedly never registered properly up to this date, so if Shiva may have to forfeit all the matches he played in, that will calculate to a 17-point deduction. This means that the Penal-based school may face relegation from fourth to last with just six points on the 15-team table which could see them demoted to the Championship Division for the next season from its fourth place on the 15-team standings, to last with six points.

Shiva Boys principal Dexter Sakal in an interview with Guardian Media Sports yesterday said it was an oversight rather than a deliberate attempt to violate the rule but is still awaiting the final word from the committee.

“We didn’t pay attention to that rule,” said Sakal. “We don’t think we infringed it, so it depends if the disciplinary committee says we infringed that rule, the final result is still pending because I hasn’t received any word on it.”

If the SSFL Appeals Committee rules in favour of QRC and Fatima College after the Port of Spain school challenged a decision by the SSFL’s disciplinary committee to give Shiva Boys a warning for the illegal use of Mason. The talented midfielder who played for T&T Super League outfit Marabella Family Crisis Centre was required to submit a transfer certificate from his club to register in the SSFL.

“I believe we have legit case not to get penalised,” said Sakal.

Manager Sheldon Maharaj, who also handles the team’s administrative duties, with Sakal said his school provided the SSFL with imperial evidence that Beal did not play for the Angels though he was listed to play on September 2.

“It was said that Beal also played for the Angels on September which was the same date he played for the school against Trinity College Moka. We provided the SSFL with documented evidence from the game but they still don’t want to believe us, so I don’t know what else to say more than they just want us out their league,” Maharaj said.

On Thursday, Sakal suggested that legal proceedings would follow the decision to award QRC and Fatima points and goals from their appeal on Thursday last.

However, yesterday he had a change of mind saying: “I have already made up my mind that I wouldn’t go that way after all, I said we committed an infringement in certain ways. We were not fairly treated but in the end we compromised ourselves.

“Right now we are focused on the Intercol and coming out with something.”

The school has already appealed a recent decision to award St Anthony’s College the win, in spite of the fact that their protest was done outside the 72-hour time frame.

Efforts to contact SSFL president William Wallace and general secretary Azaad Mohammed-Khan proved futile.

A standings has been circulating on the coaches Whatsapp group with Presentation College as the leader and Shiva in last place.

Shiva Boys to be relegated.
By Jelani Beckles (Newsday).

Principal of Shiva Boys Hindu College Dexter Sakal is doubtful the school will protest the decision by the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) to deduct 17 points from the school for fielding two players improperly registered this season.

Shiva Boys’ Kierron Mason played a Super League game for Marabella Crisis Centre while Matthew Beal played for Siparia Angels in the Southern Football Association. Both games were on September 2, prior to the start of the SSFL season. The SSFL rules state that players must seek clearance from the league to play in other leagues after August 31. As a result, Shiva Boys now lie last in the SSFL standings with six points and will be relegated to the championship division next season. The SSFL contacted Shiva Boys yesterday and informed the school of their decision.

This season has been marred by controversy as Fyzabad Secondary were thrown out of the league last month due to two of their players being registered with false CSEC passes.

Sakal said the infraction by the two Shiva Boys players took place before the season started and the school found out about the situation late in the season. “Honestly we were not aware of this because the 2nd of September is before school started. We never asked the first player and we found out about it quite late in the season and we did not pay attention to that rule. Coming down late in the season, we realised we had another player in the same situation.”

Sakal said he is uncertain if the school will appeal the decision as the number of protests during the season has left him exasperated.

“This season has been so hard with all these protests that I will not really pursue it anymore. Since the start of the league, I have been having so much (stress because) of protests because of this same situation off the field. The season has ended, it is two months now and I am just going to leave it there, and next week I will see what I will do – if I am going to do anything. I have not made a decision yet. It is very doubtful that I will continue with anything.” Sakal said it is unfortunate because the Shiva Boys played at a high level throughout the season and were it not for protests, would have been top of the standings.

“My players are suffering the most because they played well. It is just because we did not pay attention to this 2nd of September business that all this trouble came up on us. I don’t know if the players were even aware of the rule. We were not paying attention to it because it never affected us in the past, so it is really a difficult situation for us to have played so good and then reach (so) low.” The league concludes today.

There are rules to be followed.  Now if the rules are unclear, outdated, etc. then they should be changed. I feel bad for Shiva but their management dropped the ball big time in regards to following the rules.

Pres prevails... .clinches SSFL title with 2-1 win over Fatima.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Presentation College, San Fernando, was crowned champion of this year’s highly controversial Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday at Fatima College Ground, Mucurapo, beating the home team 2-1 in a must win contest.

Their triumph though was only complete when the Disciplinary Committee of the SSFL confirmed that Shiva Boys Hindu College’s use of defender Matthew Beal was illegal and therefore “Pres” as they are popularly known, were awarded three points and as many goals from an encounter in early October, which they lost 0-3.

Williams Wallace, the SSFL president confirmed that the Penal-based, Shiva Boys was relegated after Beal allegedly played in two matches for the Siparia Angels in the Southern Football Association on September 2 and 23.

With yesterday’s victory Pres took their tally to 35 points, two more than their closest challengers Naparima, who demolished Trinity College Moka, 8-2, but needed the San Fernando-based Presentation to lose if they were to claim the title.

Sean Cooper, the Pres coach was high in praise of his team, saying it felt really great to have crossed the line first, after last year’s InterCol loss to San Juan.

“Fatima gave a great fight as expected. In fact when they equalized it created a bit of panic among the players and I had to tell our players to settle and play the game, which they did,” said Cooper.

Pres got an opening goal from Jordan Riley from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, but Joshua Araujo-Wilson put the game back on level footing with his goal in the 39th. The teams went to the half-time interval at 1-1.

Pres though got the winner in the 62nd minute from super-sub Nathaniel Dyer, who according to Cooper, has mastered the art of scoring when introduced to a game.

The former national youth coach admitted he was a bit lost with the many protests and appeals this season, but said his team got the support of former national coach Stephen Hart and the teaching staff, who were always there to encourage his players.

“We didn’t know how much points we had at one point but we know we had five more games to play. I basically told the boys to win all their remaining games and whatever happens after, happens,” Cooper explained.

Naparima manager Percy Samlalsingh said they did what they had to do, but the other results just did not favour them. They needed to win their match by ten clear goals at home to have a chance of winning, and sure enough they got three early goals from Rondell Payne (4th), Ronaldo Mc Intosh (6th) and Kordel Frontin in the 20th, but they allowed Trinity’s Saleem Henry to obstruct their smooth flow with a goal in the 25th.

However, they persevered with double strikes from Declan Marcelle (37th, 60th) and Mark Ramdeen (40th and 50th), before Judah St Louis rounded off the Naps scoring in the 60th minute for an 8-1 advantage.

But two minutes from the end, Trinity got a second goal from Javon Ward for a 8-2 defeat.

At St Mary’s College Ground the home team put tears in the eyes of their Westmoorings Tigers rivals of St Anthony’s College. First by scoring the opener in the 54th minute from Terran Winner, and later from Devon Charles on the 70th to triumph, in spite of a second half goal from Krishorn Alexander for the Tigers.

Shiva finished a heart wrenching league at Barrackpore Recreation Ground with a 2-3 defeat to St Benedict’s College.

“Pres Lions” roar in North as Premier title goes South again; Presentation conquer SSFL.
By Roneil Walcott (Wired868).

“Ain’t nobody, ain’t nobody better than Pres!”

Uninhibited jubilation. When referee Nicholas Murray’s whistle sounded to signal the end of today’s final round match at Mucurapo Road, Presentation College (San Fernando) celebrated their 2-1 away win over Fatima as if celebrations were going out of style.

The victory meant that the “Pres Lions” had finally copped the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division title in a topsy-turvy season when, on the final match-day, any one of three teams still had a mathematical chance of being crowned champions.

“The institution is bigger than us and this win was for the institution,” said Presentation coach Shawn Cooper. “I think the principal and the staff at Presentation College worked tirelessly in keeping the boys focused both on and off the field as student athletes.”

But Fatima ensured that Presentation’s victory was no walk in the park and, on an exciting final day in the Premier Division, the visitors needed a second-half strike by sub Nathaniel Dyer to seal the title.

Profiting from an SSFL boardroom decision which went against Shiva Boys Hindu College for their use of defender Matthew Beal, Presentation had yesterday jumped to the top of the table. And they were able to stay there thanks to Dyer’s 63rd minute goal.

The teams were all tied up after the first half, Jordan Riley’s penalty being cancelled out by a leveller from opposing skipper Joshua Araujo-Wilson.

Meanwhile, Naparima, nipping at the leaders’ heels at the start of the day, were doing their utmost to pile on the pressure, leading Trinity College Moka 5-0 at the interval. The 2014 and 2015 title-winners eventually ran out 8-2 victors, good enough to propel them above title hopefuls St Anthony’s College who succumbed away to CIC in the “Battle of the Saints” at Serpentine Road.

“Today, it was a difficult [game] because I had to keep the boys focused,” Cooper told Wired868. “Coming into the game with a two-point lead, a draw could have left us losing on goal difference to Naparima because we knew they had Moka at home and they took them to a bigger and flatter field in Point Fortin where they could use their pace and guile.”

The news of Naps’ dominant performance at Mahaica Oval did not dampen the ardour of one lanky Presentation supporter who remained bold in his predictions.

“Naps could score about 15!” he exclaimed, “but we will still get the job done.”

He might well have believed every word of it but it was not obvious to the observer; his body language as he constantly paced up and down the side-lines did not convey the same confidence contained in his statement.

Perhaps the Presentation players too weren’t quite feeling it as they never really looked like the cohesive unit their fans have become accustomed to seeing. Truth be told, Fatima never really allowed them to settle, coach Wayne Sheppard’s side stroking the ball around nicely and pressing the Lions relentlessly.

“Is only one team under pressure inno,” Sheppard reminded his audience. “We are good.”

Sheppard, it is worth noting, is assistant coach to Cooper at Queen’s Park Cricket Club, a factor which, according to Cooper, contributed to a more keenly fought contest.

“Their coach Wayne Sheppard and I work together at Queen’s Park. He’s a very knowledgeable coach […] and he knows me inside out.”

Prior to Riley’s 21st-minute penalty, the hosts had looked a more composed unit but their 39th-minute leveller was, to tell the truth, fortuitous. Araujo-Wilson found himself on spot to nod the ball into the net from close range after a Presentation defender inadvertently headed a set piece off Jabari Gray’s crossbar.

Araujo-Wilson’s headed equaliser made for an interesting off-the-field side-show between Cooper and Sheppard and a couple near misses by Presentation midfielder Darnell Hospedales raised the tension for Cooper even more. On the stroke of half-time, the midfielder sent a close-range volley wide of the mark after fellow midfielder Terrell Williams played a sweet, lofted pass from the right.

“How he miss there?” a perplexed Cooper asked his technical staff members.

With National Under-15 attacker Jean-Heim McFee up top, Fatima always looked a threat. However, Riley is no slouch on the break himself and he gave wing-back Luke Boucaud a good runaround today.

Kees Dieffenthaller’s “Fighter” had been blaring from the Pres dressing room and the new Premier Division champions must have drawn their pre-game inspiration from it. On the hour mark, Cooper made a substitution which ultimately sent the title to the Southland and Presentation’s doorstep.

Cooper declined to take all the credit for himself, though, heaping praise on his technical staff and Presentation Principal Dexter Mitchell.

“I don’t think they could have gotten a better principal,” he told Wired868. “Since Mr Mitchell came to the school, we have been winning a lot of things; he’s a sort of blessing in disguise for us…

“We had the top performer in the Caribbean in the CAPE exam. And last week I asked him what box is left to tick and he said to bring home a title.”

The speedy Dyer, who has often been used to devastating effect off the bench alongside Jaiye Sheppard, came on the pitch in the 60th minute. Just three minutes later, he had a goal, decisive as it turned out. Stealing the ball off an opposing defender, he wiggled past a couple more Fatima players before banging a right-footed effort past Jacob Camacho between the uprights.

Dyer was able to bask in the glory of his achievement immediately after his close-range effort had rippled the net. But twice thereafter, the home team came dangerously close to spoiling the moment for him with efforts from lanky National Under-15 attacker Jean-Heim McFee.

“I must say kudos to them for giving this last game such a momentous feeling because it was not like we ran over them,” Cooper conceded. “They gave us a fight down to the very last minute.”

In the end, however, when Murray’s final whistle went, the score-line still read Presentation 2, Fatima 1.

And the southerners made merry on Mucurapo Road singing the refrain:

“Ain’t nobody, ain’t nobody better than Pres!”

Jaiye is very talented.  Probably the most talented in his age group.  He and other guys like Judah Garcia, Jordan Riley and Pappy represent the future of our football.  We need to develop them and not let them just be SSFL stars.

Coca Cola Intercol kicks off in North Zone today.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Following a turbulent season in the Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division, schools turn their attention to the one which started it all as the Coca Cola Intercol knockout competition kicks off with preliminary matches in the North Zone today.

Three matches will usher in this year’s competition and among them will see newly promoted team and 2014 champions East Mucurapo Secondary come up against Diego Martin Central Secondary from 3:30pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

That encounter is the second match in a double header which also sees Malick Secondary match wits against Diego Martin North from 1:30 pm.

At QRC grounds in St Clair, St Francis College, formerly Belmont Intermediate will meet Tranquility Secondary from 3:30pm. Since the inception of the new format of the SSFL League competition, schools from the south zone have prevailed in all four years.

On Saturday, Presentation College, San Fernando continued the South Zone’s dominance, following in the footsteps of Naparima College which was the back to back winner in 2014 and 2015 as well as the now relegated Shiva Boys Hindu College which claimed the title in 2016.

The Intercol competition has proven a tougher trophy for the southerners to secure however, as dating back to 2010 only one school has been successful when Naps did the League and Intercol double in 2015. Apart from that the title has been shared amongst the East, North and Tobago Zones. Signal Hill won it in 2010 following a double for St Anthony’s College the next two years\ and one win for St Augustine in 2013.

Mucurapo’s and Naparima’s wins preceded San Juan North Secondary’s win last year.

The defending champs will see action for the first time on Monday November 13, entering the competition at the zonal quarter-final stage against El Dorado East Secondary.

East Mucurapo shut-out D/Martin North 2-0.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

East Mucurapo, newly promoted to the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), sent a strong signal to its opponents in the Coca Cola InterCol yesterday by shutting out Diego Martin Central 2-0 in the feature match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Under coach Dale Saunders, who left T&T Pro League outfit Central FC for unpaid wages, the Mucurapo boys got an opening goal from Kevon Edwards 57th minute before Gabriel Charles completed the victory with his strike in the 84th.

Saunders congratulated his team but said they will be taking it one game at a time. “They are a very young bunch of players who are eager to learn. They have been working hard and showing the right attitude, which is important and which is sufficient for him” Saunders explained.

Mucurapo will next face SSFL North Zone giants St Mary’s College at the same venue and Saunders said while he will not make predictions, his team will attempt to progress in the tournament at the hands of a very strong CIC unit.

In another game yesterday Malick Secondary also flexed its muscles against Diego Martin Central in the day’s first match, in winning 3-0, courtesy a double strike from forward Jaheem Granderson.

Granderson tormented the Diego Martin Central defence for his two goals, before Christian Morris added another to put Malick through to the next round. In another game at Queen’s Royal College (QRC) Grounds in St Clair, St Francis, former Belmont Intermediate, clobbered Tranquility Secondary 4-2.

Tranquil’s two goals came from the boot of Kedar Mc Burnie in the 65th minute and Khalis King in the 82nd.

Results

East Mucurapo 2 (Kevon Edwards 57th, Gabriel Charles 84th) vs Diego Martin Central 0

Malick Secondary 3 (Jaheem Granderson 2, Christian Morris) vs Diego Martin North 0

St Francis College 4 vs Tranquility Secondary 2 (Kedar Mc Burnie 65th, Khalis King 82nd)

Secondary schools football scarred for life.
By Andre Baptise (Guardian).

As far as the Secondary Schools Football League is concerned. Perhaps thankfully the 2017 League season is over or is it?

I can only ask that, based on comments attributed to certain coaches and staff of some of the teams (sorry schools), that are already looking ahead to the National intercol tournament set to start

shortly. However, it is both perplexing and some may find it amusing, that many teams which may have been in the limelight for different reasons, are attempting to shrug off those queries and attempting to focus on the intercol. So can the Secondary Schools Football League under its current President William Wallace confess or reveal, if all matters under scrutiny are complete and that teams (sorry schools),

participating in the Schools Intercol, have all their necessary documents in place and there will be no more deductions, suspensions or police investigations going forward?

If the answer is yes, then, I believe the country will be happy and look forward to the National Intercol series of matches that lie ahead of us.

However, if the answer to the question (that is long, I know), is No!! …. Then we need to examine whether the teams (sorry again, schools) in question should participate
As it stands at the moment, President Wallace must be wondering what has gone wrong this season, given the number of off field matters that have drawn the attention of a nation, once believing that secondary schools football was pure.

I could be wrong (although I doubt that), but I believe this 2017 season, may have witnessed the largest number of claims/protests from various schools against one another. If one did not know better, it could have appeared to be an attempt to diminish the incumbents at the Secondary School League, and force them to resign and be replaced by another group of individuals gratefully waiting in the wings.

For the moment and unless there is drastic change, the results of the 2017 season will long remain under scrutiny and sadly perhaps some of those that may have played the game fairly, may also be brushed aside by this large paint brush.

It is quite noticeable, that when I visit several schools to talk on sports, the question at the centre of attention for these young students in both primary and secondary school, is about the problems and the errors that have been revealed in the Secondary Schools Football.

Further to that, at three schools recently in the …(west…no south no east.no central.wherever), I was told by those in authority, some of whom have knowledge of the level of salaries being paid in the PRO league, or SUPER League to our coaches, that a Secondary School Football coach at certain schools can earn upwards of $10,000 TT for their efforts…in fact it appears some coaches double up as well with Pro League/Super League duties in combination with similar duties in the Secondary Schools league.

Herein may lie the problem, if the Secondary Schools League are brave enough to address it, in that players from Pro League / Super League outfits may be tempted to return to play for schools for a fee or just tempting to join a school, because a coach with connections and influence wants to win a title to add to his resume, and the school authorities because of bragging rights, may turn a blind eye, without checking the quality of all of the relevant information provided.

The situation is dire, and needs to be addressed and no school should be spared or given lenient treatment, despite whatever rich history they may in the sport or the league.

At the moment, some have suggested that it is one rule for some schools (the prestige schools) and another for the rest, if that is so, then this must be stop, and President Wallace has to be open on these points.

Whether anyone likes it or not, this years Secondary Schools Football season has been scared and with doubts still lingering over some of the teams and players, given the drastic transformation in form and results since all these revelations on i95.5fm I sports, it is left to be seen what happens next. Will the Sponsors also run away? Uhmmm.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Pres leads by example.
By Colin Murray (Guardian).

The 2017 controversial Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division has ended with Presentation College San Fernando (SF) coming away with the title. Congratulations to both the technical staff and teaching staff at the school for sticking to the rules, being fair and still ending up victorious.

It must give them immense satisfaction to know that they have abided by the rules, worked hard and sweated blood and sand to be victorious. It is indeed refreshing to know that a school was able to abide by all the rules that were put in place by the very principals and teachers and come out on top.

It is beyond comprehension to understand how the same persons making the rules are the very ones breaking them. These nasty occurrences brought the league into disrepute far too many times and I hope that moving forward, the executive of the League ensures that what happened this year will never occur in the future.

Turning to the more positive aspects of the league, there were some excellent games with some good football produced by some of the teams. As I wrote previously, I feared for the Tobago teams and both have been demoted.

I trust that both schools will get some help as they left a lot to be desired technically. I am happy to see another Tobago school - Bishops High School - being promoted. Let us hope they will be a real threat next year.

Shiva Boys were a huge disappointment with their off the field antics and they are fortunate to just be demoted. St Mary’s, Fatima and San Juan North showed on their day that they could match any of the big three.

Unfortunately, Fatima and St Mary’s were too inconsistent and neither seemed to possess the ‘never say die’ attitude that was needed in every game. The talent was there but the grit was lacking at times. The San Juan boys lacked the concentration needed for 90 mins and they conceded silly goals when they were on top. However, they are a talented side that can cause an upset if they played with consistent drive in moving forward.

Trinity East seemed a much more talented side than where they finished the season but they lacked the discipline to see out results when it was needed. St Augustine, QRC and Trinity Moka were not as talented as the years gone by and it was always going to be a struggle for them to avoid the drop.

Carapichaima East was a real surprise. They played some excellent games and offered good value for their position. They were perhaps a little unfortunate to lose some games that they could have easily won.

The top 3 – Presentation College SF, Naparima College and St Anthony’s College were consistently the best teams and on any given day they would beat one another. Presentation and Naparima were well organised and coached and you could see their plan unfolding during a game. They both deserved to finish where they did. As they say, the table never lies.

There are so many talented players in the League which makes it difficult to choose a League team of the season. However, these players have worked immensely hard and their efforts showed throughout earning them a place in my selection.

Trinity East fires six past Holy Cross in Inter-Col.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Premier Division campaigners Trinity College East were severe on East rivals Holy Cross College yesterday in their first match of the Coca Cola National InterCol play-off at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima, firing six goals past them in a 6-0 victory to advance to the next round of matches.

After a poor campaign in which they finished eighth on the 15-team standings in the League, the boys from Henry Street Arouca were in a no-nonsense mood with the talented Nickel Orr spearheading the attack with a hat-trick and an equally talented Kerdell Sween notching a double. In front its home team at the Malabar venue Orr got the opening goal after just six minutes, before adding another in the 41st.

In another game at the same venue, newly promoted Valencia High also marched on to the next round in the intercol by virtue of clobbering Five Rivers Secondary 3-1. After ensuring a berth in next year’s premier division for the first time, Valencia made light work of a team that they defeated twice already for the season, by forging in front in the 32nd minute from Jeremy Adolphus’ goal.

But the Arouca boys found the equalizer when Jamal Thompson shot past the Valencia goalkeeper in the 50th minute, only to discover afterwards that his effort was all in vain. Kerdell De Verteuil gave Valencia the advantage for a second time in the 67th before Daniel La Croix drilled the final nail in their coffin with a 70th minute item.

RESULTS:

Trinity College East 6 (Nickel Orr 6th, 41st, 62nd, Romario Williams 44th, Kerdell Sween 71st, 89th) vs Holy Cross 0

Valencia High 3 (Jeremy Adolphus 32nd, Kerdell De Verteuil 67th, Daniel La Croix 70th) vs Five Rivers 1 (Jamal Thompson 50th)

Presentation (Chag) 4 (Kemuel Hagley 5th, Veron Aqui 40th, Stephen Allong 66th, Joshua Bobb 82nd) vs Couva East 0

Pleasantville Sec 5 (Sherwin Andrews, Dillon Yearwood (2), Jishawn Joefield) vs Fyzabad Anglican 0

Princes Town Sec 2 vs Point Fortin 3

Unlike the one written by Walter Alibey.  His article is a mess. East Mucurapo apparently played both Diego teams. And then Malick did the same.
