Late surge lifts Mexico over T&T.
CONCACAF.COM.

Mexico (6W-3D-0L, 21 points) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to rally for a 3-1 win over visiting Trinidad & Tobago (1-0-8, 3) in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Friday at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras.

The victory means that the Tricolor will finish atop the Hexagonal for the second time in six attempts and first since the 1998 cycle.

Shahdon Winchester put the Soca Warriors ahead in the 66th minute, when he ran onto Levi Garcia’s header and lifted a right-footed effort over goalkeeper Jesus Corona from 12-yards out.

From that point forward, Mexico shifted into a different in order to maintain its standing as CONCACAF’s only unbeaten side in qualifying.

In the 78th minute, substitute Hirving Lozano leveled for the host, firing in with his left foot from 10 yards off Miguel Layun’s cross from the left side of the box.

Javier Hernandez gave Mexico the lead for good in the 88th minute, heading home from four-yards out after goalkeeper Adrian Foncette dove to save Jesus Manuel Corona’s shot, only for the ball to shoot into the air.

The match was concluded for all intents and purposes in the fourth minute of stoppage time thanks to Hector Herrera’s brilliant right-footed free kick from 23 yards that was placed inside the right post.

Trinidad & Tobago was officially eliminated from contention, but will host the United States on Tuesday. That same day, Mexico will visit Honduras.

Tinkerman Tallest misses out on historic point; “Chicharito” leads Mexico past stubborn T&T
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team came within three minutes of a famous result in Mexico last night but, at the final whistle, it was a seventh successive loss for coach Dennis Lawrence’s men.

West Ham United striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernández was the man to break the hearts of the visiting team with a typically predatory finish in the 87th minute while a late free kick from Hector Herrera added some arguably undeserved gloss to the scoreline.

Mexico ended the game as 3-1 winners, although it was a much tighter affair than the score summary suggested.

Sure, “El Tricolor” dominated possession throughout—67 percent to 33 in each half—while the count of successful passes read 319 for the hosts and 93 for the visitors. But with Defence Force utility player Curtis Gonzales in top form in central defence and Police FC goalkeeper Adrian Foncette up for the challenge between the uprights, Mexico rarely looked like scoring.

And, in the 65th minute, Trinidad and Tobago suddenly looked capable of pinching more than just a point as, against the run of play, Shahdon Winchester scored with a neat finish.

The Soca Warriors could not hold on, though, as substitute Hirving Lozano levelled in the 78th minute before Hernández and Herrera spared Mexico the blushes.

Lawrence would no doubt prefer to focus on the positives and there were a few. The lanky rookie coach has already proven to be an unorthodox squad selector but it took his team’s elimination from the campaign to really bring out his inner “Tinkerman.”

Not only did Lawrence leave out 12 players from his last match-day squad—including his two main goalkeepers, two team captains and all three forwards—but he sprang another surprise with his available players in Mexico as his two most high-profile players, Kevin Molino and Joevin Jones, started the contest on the bench alongside Canada-born goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh.

Just over a week ago, Lawrence said he omitted Jan-Michael Williams and Marvin Phillip to give Ranjitsingh a shot. So, presumably, the United States-based goalkeeper did not suitably impress on the training ground. After all, Foncette has been in the squad all along—languishing as third choice behind the veteran pair of shot-stoppers.

Foncette’s first chance in the spotlight came under former head coach Tom Saintfiet in January and he did not cover himself in glory on that occasion, when Trinidad and Tobago conceded six goals in two matches against Suriname and Haiti in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Play-offs.

But he looked steady enough at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras—some 6,070 feet above sea level—and made two impressive first-half saves to deny Chicharito and opposing captain Andrés Guardado.

Defender Kareem Moses, called up up of the blue once Lawrence realised that right-back Alvin Jones was unavailable through suspension, played out of position on the right side of the defence and struggled at times. But it was Moses’ alert defending at the back post to deny Hernández that was the most outstanding play of the first half and ensured that both teams went in at the interval on level terms.

If Trinidad and Tobago fans felt it could not get better than that, they were wrong.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Winchester, who is on the roster at Murciélagos FC in the Mexican Second Division, reacted sharply to a Levi Garcia’s headed flick-on and then produced a finish to match, steering the ball home off the inside of the far post.

It might even have been 2-0 but for a low save from Mexico goalkeeper Jesus Corona off Trinidad and Tobago winger Nathan Lewis, another Warrior who did himself justice on the night.

In central midfield, team captain Khaleem Hyland—Trinidad and Tobago’s most capped player yesterday with 73 appearances before kick-off—was the glue in the team, using his wit and experience to keep his team compact, slow the game down and frustrate the hosts on the small ground.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osario pushed players forward in search of an equaliser. Lawrence countered by introducing the fresh legs of Molino and Joevin.

Molino ran hard for the team—Joevin not so much—but his touch was not there and Trinidad and Tobago never looked better off for the changes. And Lawrence might have felt short-changed when Mexico’s substitute, Lozano, grabbed the equaliser from close range after Joevin failed to pressure a left-side cross from opposing wing-back Miguel Layún.

It could easily have been 2-1 to Mexico in the 82nd minute but Foncette produced a good reflex save to deny Hernández off a Carlos Vela pass. And the Warriors looked to be on course for a famous point in Mexico.

Trinidad and Tobago’s five previous World Cup qualifying trips to Mexico all ended in defeat with 17 goals conceded and one Hayden Tinto strike to show for their time. Notably, though, the Warriors briefly looked like stealing a point on their last trip to the Spanish-speaking North American nation before stumbling to a 2-1 loss on 9 June 2009.

Would Lawrence’s men go one step further than Russell Latapy’s team had done eight years ago?

The final answer was ‘no.’ In the 87th minute Corona ran into space down the right side of the Trinidad and Tobago box and, although Foncette parried his firm effort, Chicharito latched on to the rebound to score with a swivelled header.

And, three minutes into stoppage time, Mexico added an unnecessary insurance item when Herrera beat Foncette from a set piece.

At least Lawrence has something to build on when the Warriors end their campaign against the United States on Tuesday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

For all the talk of fresh blood, there were a respectable 277 caps in Lawrence’s starting team in Mexico. Although, at the other end, in their first XI, Mexico boasted a remarkable 726 international appearances.

The United States need a win in Couva to be sure of automatic qualification for Russia although, their 4-0 win against Panama last night means that, if Honduras and Panama both lose on their final day, a draw or even a loss might still see them sneak through.

If United States coach Bruce Arena feels he has some clear idea of what team Lawrence might put out to face the “Stars and Stripes,” he might not find another person in the two-island republic who shares his confidence.

Mexico whips Warriors 3-1.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Mexico scored three unanswered goals in the second half to rally for a 3-1 win over an inexperienced visiting T&T outfit in Friday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras in San Luis Potosi.

The victory means that the Tricolor will finish atop the Hexagonal for the second time in six attempts and for the first time since the 1998, while the Soca Warriors have been confined to their eighth loss of the qualifiers for a total of just three points from one win.

The Mexicans, who have been beaten only twice by T&T in world cup qualifiers, have now jumped to 21 points from six wins and three drawn matches.

Hutson Charles, an ex-national midfielder and coach praised the team’s performance but blamed the lack of enthusiasm by the players who came on as substitutes for the loss.

“I saw an excellent display by the T&T team, in both the defensive and offensive aspects of the game in the early part of the game, but I believe the players who came on disrupted the smooth flow and aggression of its play. We kept the Mexicans at bay to the point where they appeared to have become frustrated, so I really believe that we should have at least gotten something from the match, at least a point” Charles said.

On Friday night Shahdon Winchester put the Soca Warriors ahead in the 66th minute, when he ran onto Levi Garcia’s header and lifted a right-footed effort over goalkeeper Jesus Corona from 12-yards out. From that point forward, Mexico shifted into a different order to maintain its standing as CONCACAF’s only unbeaten side in qualifying.

In the 78th minute, substitute Hirving Lozano levelled for the hosts, firing in with his left foot from ten yards off Miguel Layun’s cross from the left side of the box. Javier Hernandez gave Mexico the lead for good in the 88th minute, heading home from four-yards out after goalkeeper Adrian Foncette dove to save Jesus Manuel Corona’s shot, only for the ball to shoot into the air.

the end of this game was very hard to watch. IMO Winchester and garcia was far more dangerous than jones and molino.

Lawrence got his subs wrong. Why bring in three attackers when you're up 1-0 in the 70th minute? imo he should have left Garcia and lesson Paul in the game take off Winchester and bring in Jovin to boost the midfield and try and grind out a 1-0 win. I wonder who the hell gets in his ear to make these horrible mistakes?

We will split it.

T&T has the record for smallest population as well as smallest by land area currently.
Iceland will be the smallest population. We will still retain the land area record.

Ranjitsingh have to play next game, Foncette is terrible.

Molino and them is a waste we.

Bad subs by Lawrence, you score and instead of tightening the midfield, we lose it up....  :rotfl:

Decent play by T&T though.

Anybody have a link to the full game.

No politricks.. I will like Greg to get a call for the U S game not because Foncette was terrible because actually I think he did well for us,this campaign is over and it's time opportunity be given to someone who we will need for the total rebuild.
The substitutes did not add anything to this game, which is a shame because Jones and Molino are veterans in this squad and so leadership from them never came
Again look at the tape and do not rely on your memory,we had an opportunity to score a second goal...Levi was the last person to touch the ball before it went out of play...observe his position...he looks all contorted...his body appears to be going in different directions...he had nothing left

Foncette did well. But the 3rd goal was his fault. It started with him. He threw the ball right outside the area to a player and the Mexican forward intercepted, causing Molino to foul. He could not stop that shot. He made one particular save in the first half that kept us in the game. But overall he was good. But DL should start looking to develop new local keepers. And yes, Greg should be in the mix. He needs to get about 2 to 3 games with the senior team. Yes he looking good in the clips, but he is playing in a lower league. Not taking anything away from him. But that all depends on what DL  is looking for, and who DJW may want or will want DL to include on the team.

I absolutely hate it. This is the third time we had this team to beat at full strength and we let them off the hook. how is it that we could take a lead on them and find a way to squander it so cheaply, where is our national pride that we can't hang these teams like usa and mexico when jamaica does it quite frequently?

as for the goalie he needs to leave that failing league and find a contract in a solid league before he's allowed to represent us in a serious way, sure he's shown promise but so did his predecessors Jan and marvin who never improved in that soft league. it's high time we get defenders who don't struggle in games and that's what I saw last night, a defense that was struggling. we need defenders who play in leagues where the pressure is on for 90 plus and avoid silly mistakes like letting layun cross a ball on the ground right across your box let alone not being intercepted only to find an unmarked player and that right there is unacceptable in any serious league.

we can't continue to play the whipping boy role in concacaf any longer. this must be the turning point where we start taking football seriously by consentrating first on dominating CFU teams and having decent results over the north and central american teams, no mistakes taken no excuse given. and dennis lawrence I would be crushed if I don't see greg ranjitsingh in goal on tuesday, it's high time we cap this lad and see what he has to offer.

Having your best players on the bench for your WC game is pretty stupid they not the type of players you bring off the bench 20 to 30 min is not enough time for them to grow into the game.

T&T has a better record than Jamaica when playing the  U S A and Mexico in WC games.

Actually, he may have had a point. Against Pan. we did not seem to want it as much as they did and perhaps it's because we were out and they weren't.

Hungry guys with something to prove might be more prudent. Under normal circumstances, I would always want to see JJ and KM in tandem.

This is how Trini coaches coach for ages...

The Soca Warriors had 32 percent of the ball in Friday's 3-1 loss at Mexico. They completed a decent-enough 69 percent of them, but that number cratered to below 30 percent in the attacking third, and zero percent on crosses. More than 25 percent of their passes were long-balls.
