Dover relishing rematch with Soca Warriors

Dover relishing rematch with Soca Warriors
By Rawle Toney (Guyana Chronicle)

– GFF still tight-lipped on team

ON November 11, 2011 at the Guyana National Stadium, the ‘Golden Jaguars’ roared to a 2 – 1 win over the ‘Soca Warriors’ to end the Twin Island Republic’s 2014 World Cup hopes, and, at the time, created history by reaching, for the first time, the penultimate round of the CONCACAF leg of the qualifiers.

Four days later (November 15), Trinidad and Tobago, playing at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, defeated Guyana 3 – 0, but the damage was already done.
The two countries will now meet for the first time in six years on Tuesday, November 14, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, when Trinidad and Tobago play host to Guyana in a match played on a FIFA International date.

“This is a game I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” Head Coach, Wayne Dover told Chronicle Sport in an exclusive interview last evening, adding, “I think if anything else, we want to ensure we come out with a win.”

The match on November 14 will be the 21st meeting between the two countries in the sport, with the first being in 1978.

The ‘Soca Warriors’ have won 14 of those meetings, while four matches ended in a draw. Guyana’s last victory was on November 11, 2011 and their first was a 4 – 0 win in the Island’s capital.

Guyana will also travel to Indonesia on November 25 for an international friendly, but Dover stated that the strongest possible team will be selected for the Trinidad and Tobago encounter, while for the match on the Asian continent, the team will feature predominantly local players.

GFF tight-lipped
Trinidad and Tobago have already published their squad for the up-coming game against Guyana, but, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) remains tight-lipped about the composition of Guyana’s team, leaving many pundits and fans upset and wondering why the secrecy.

Dover stated that Blackpool’s midfield maestro, Neil Danns, will not be available for both friendlies, but pointed out “what you will see is a very strong team with our best available players for the Trinidad game because that’s a game where we could actually get some points, since it’s an official FIFA date. We have some players training here (in Guyana), but most of those players are really for the Indonesia game since that’s where we want to expose our local bunch.”

Veterans, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, who both played in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro-League, were named in Dover’s squad for the Friendly International, which should also feature UK-based Chris Bourne and Samuel Cox.

“I believe that we owe it to our supporters to assemble the best team for the game against Trinidad. I think people look at what happened on 11.11.11, but much has changed for both countries since then. Right now, we (Guyana football) are going through a rebuilding stage while trying to keep some of the old guards around to help in the process.

It’s going to take some time and I believe matches like these will help significantly,” Dover said.
While Guyana would’ve dropped significantly since their infamous 11.11.11 victory, Trinidad and Tobago would’ve rebounded to return to their dominant place in the region and CONCACAF, alongside Jamaica.

Guyana is ranked 165 in FIFA, dropping nine places in the recent rankings, while the ‘Soca Warriors’ moved 16 places up to 83 and eighth in CONCACAF.

While Guyana is coming off an upsetting 1 – 0 loss to Grenada in their last international outing, Trinidad and Tobago is playing for the first time since their historic 2 – 1 win over the United States, causing the ‘Red, White and Blue’ to miss the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Golden Jaguars include Jacobs, Richardson for Soca Warriors clash
Guyana Times

After a prolonged period of secrecy, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) on Wednesday released an 18-man squad for Senior National Men’s team International Friendly against Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the three locally based players invited for the Golden Jaguars are the experienced Dwain Jacobs and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson while the other is Anthony Benfield.

The other 15 comprise four debutants including Kadell Daniel, Devonte Small, Daniel Jodah and Jelani Smith.

Goalkeepers:
Akel Clarke (North East Stars FC), Andrew Durant (San Juan Jabloteh FC)

Defenders:
Christopher Bourne (Islington Admiral United FC), Jake Newton (Walton & Hersham FC), Jelani Smith (Sigma FC), Samuel Cox (Wealdstone FC), Terence Vancooten (Stevenage FC)

Midfielders:
Brandon Beresford (Rochester Rhinos), Warren Creavalle (Philadelphia Union), Dwain Jacobs (Police FC), Anthony Benfield (Alpha United FC), Kadell Daniel (Dover Athletic FC) Daniel Jodah (Sigma FC)

Forwards:
Shaquille Agard (Durham United FC), Emery Welshman (Puerto Rico Islanders), Sheldon Holder (Morvant Caledonia United), Gregory Richardson (Pele FC), Devonte Small (Reynir FC)

Technical Staff:
Rawle Adams (Team Manager), Wayne Dover (Head Coach) Charles (Pollard Assistant Coach), Lyndon France (Physical Trainer), Eon DeVeira (Goalkeeper Coach), Denzil Hernandez (Physio), Trevor Burnett (Kit Manager)

Commenting on the squad, Wayne Dover, Interim Head Coach expressed confidence of the team doing well.

“One of the four additions is a young, talented Central Defender – Smith,” Dover said. “We have been short of Central Defenders as of recent and although we have identified talent, the likes of Jeremy Garrett and Cecil Jackman, who will emerge as leading defenders in the future, we’ll focus on using the new-found talent for the Trinidad game,” he added. Daniel, while new to the senior national team, played at the national U-23 level in an Olympic qualifier some years ago.

Looking ahead to the Trinidad game, Dover said: “We are expecting a very tough game where Trinidad will bring it to us especially since they’re coming off from a 2-1 victory against the United States. They should be confident but we’re preparing for that. We will try to give a good account of ourselves, give a good match and get a positive result.”

Meanwhile, a 24-man locally-based squad begun training from November 5, as Guyana also travels to Indonesia for another International Friendly on the November 25.

Dover said this squad will be available for selection, he is pleased with the attendance thus far and the players have shown a commitment to fitness, which is one of the critical areas.

“Fitness is currently our number priority. Analysis of our previous match against Grenada revealed a number of areas in the team’s performance that can be improved. Such areas included our crossing ability and our execution of combination play. Nevertheless, we have used this knowledge to develop a new training regimen.

While some of the selected players travel to Trinidad, the others will remain as a unit with identified coaches.

“Bryan Joseph and Lyndon France will remain to work with players who are not selected and, in so doing, provide them with an opportunity to improve their fitness and understanding of tactics. This will improve their chances of being selected for the subsequent Indonesian International Friendly,” Dover said.

The overseas-based players, who are all in peak shape from playing in on-going seasonal matches with their respective clubs, will join the locally-based team members in Trinidad.

The Golden Jaguars are set to depart for Trinidad and Tobago on Friday for their November 14 date with the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s National Team at the Ato Bolton Stadium from 19:30h.

Trinidad and Tobago face stern Guyana test

Trinidad and Tobago face stern Guyana test
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

Murciélagos winger Shahdon Winchester will come in as a replacement for captain Kevin Molino for today’s key international friendly encounter with Guyana at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva from 7:30pm this evening.

Molino, the scorer of one of two goals for the T&T Soca Warriors in a disappointing 2-2 tie with Grenada at the same venue on Saturday, picked up a knock that has led to coach Dennis Lawrence’s decision to let him sit out of today’s match, which will serve as part of the Warriors’ rebuilding process to conquer the Caribbean once again and prepare a strong team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Winchester joined the Warriors’ camp on Sunday as promised, following his team’s 4-0 triumph over Atlante in the Mexican Ascenso MX.

The former W Connection striker did not score in his team’s victory on Saturday but said he will attempt to continue scoring at the international level. The stocky forward last scored for T&T in a World Cup qualifier against Mexico on October 6 in a 3-1 defeat. His inclusion will strengthen an already depleted TT team that will now have to do without the services of defenders Kevon Villaroel and Mekeil Williams, due to injury.

Meanwhile the Guyanese, nicknamed ‘The Golden Jaguars’ arrived in T&T over a week ago for the encounter with a number of familiar faces to local players and coaches in the T&T Pro League, such as Kelsey Benjamin who scored recently for Morvant Caledonia United in the National FA, goalkeeper Akil Clarke (North-East), Andrew Durant (San Juan Jabloteh) and striker Sheldon Holder of Morvant/Caledonia.

In addition Gregory Richardson and Dwayne Jacob, two ex Morvant/Caledonia players, are also in coach Wayne Dover’s team, as well as Charles Pollard, an assistant coach for Naparima College in the SSFL.

Dover yesterday said his team is in the best shape of its life and looks forward to a very friendly, yet competitive match. He noted that having players currently in the T&T pro league and those who have played in the TT top flight domestic football league in the past, will help his team understand the conditions they will be playing under, as well as the players they will be up against.

“We will employ positive approach for positive result” Coach Dover
Guyana Times

“We are having a very good preparation as a team that was here [in Trinidad] since Friday and we are going in to the game with a positive approach for a positive result,” the words of Golden Jaguars Head Coach Wayne Dover on the eve of their international friendly against Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Trinidad.

The Golden Jaguars 18-man squad who will be tackling the highly rated “Soca Warriors” today, were out in the evening drizzle at the match venue on Monday in Couva in Central Trinidad where Dover told Guyana Times Sport  that the team is really ready for the challenge as they seek to become a powerhouse in Caribbean football.

“We are in the rebuilding phase of our football and this is a very important game for us and for us to get a good result with the new players which will encourage many more players to show their intention of representing Guyana in football,” Dover said.

Dover said that the overseas based players have settled in and are gelling well with the Guyana-based players in giving 100 percent and showing great commitment of doing well on match days.

The head coach also sung praises for the work of Assistant Coach Charles “Lily” Pollard who is also a former national captain. “Lily” is remarkable, with his experience as a player for so long and now as a coach is really well for us, the lads are looking up to him and his ethics is tremendous, we are really happy to have him here,” Dover stated.

The hosts are on a high after beating USA 2-1 to end their (USA) chance of another world cup final and drawing 2-2 with Grenada in Grenada last weekend while Guyana’s last encounter ended in a hard fought defeat to Grenada 1-0 in St. Georges.

Guyana’s captain, Samuel Cox who was upbeat about the contest ahead of his charges stated that “we have taken a lot of positives out of the loss to Grenada recently and have put in a lot of good work ahead of this one [against Soca Warriors] and tomorrow [today] is a good opportunity to show the good work we have been putting in.”

Cox also spoke well of the efforts of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and coaches Dover and pollard and said that “the young team will give a good account of themselves which will hopefully bring joy to the faces of the Guyanese supporters.”

Guyana Golden Jaguars squad reads; Akel Clarke, Andrew Durant, Christopher Bourne, Jake Newton, Jelani Smith, Samuel Cox (Captain), Terence Vancooten, Brandon Beresford, Warren Creavalle, Dwain Jacobs, Anthony Benfield, Kadell Daniel, Daniel Jodah, Shaquille Agard, Emery Welshman, Sheldon Holder, Gregory Richardson and Devonte Small.

The Management committee comprises; Rawle Adams Manager, Head Coach Wayne Dover, Charles Pollard Assistant Coach, Lyndon France Physical Trainer, Eon DeVeira Goalkeeper coach, Denzil Hernandez Physio and Trevor Burnett Kit Manager.

The opening whistle is at 19:00h.

Not really, we are experimenting and our last two opponents are not the push overs that we think they are.

Having said that, we are undefeated in our last two games.  ;D ;D

Let me guess Guyana and other Carib teams have improved so much we should expect not to beat them  :D (dais the same rhetoric I was hearing after the Grenada game in here)

For me its more like T&T is so bad now we on par with these Carib teams

Agreed! Our level has dropped, partly because of the selections of including 14 Pro League Players to boost the number of caps required to transfer players to other leagues. Unfortunately, the players not good enough to impress other than Winchester who has done well for himself. Kudos to him

They have improved and we usually fk up. How do you think we lost to Bermuda and Guyana in the space of a week and got eliminated a few years ago. When last we won the C'bbn Cup?

TT is fallable, plain and simple.

We lost to those Carib teams at home and failed to reach final round of Carib Cup, and have been struggling to beat Caribbean teams in recent years because we have regressed to their level. Plain and simple!  The region has NOT improved, instead we are still way behind our counterparts in Central America. We would like to believe they (Carib teams) have improved so we can feel a little good about our depressing situation as we continue to struggle to beat them in recent years. Their standard of football is the SAME and ours have REGRESSED.

Sando, I know you pissed off at the national team. Yes, they underachieving. But to say the other CFU national teams have not improved is not true. But it is frustrating to see our team’s  gross inability to put away teams or hold a lead with 5 mins.  to go in a game.

Like I said this is “practice” games. And I hope DL and staff are making appropriate assessment of players. So when the real games come up, starting with the CFU Cup, we don’t want any excuses. One thing bothering me though. Someone questioned if the players selected are chosen to see if they can make the grade at the international level, or are the chosen to get the international caps so that they could be sold to clubs overseas. If it is the latter, then that defeats the purpose of the former. We can’t be “playing games” with the development process for selfish reason.

This comes back to Contro. I know he pisses off the forum sometimes, especially with the call to bring back SH. But he has alluded to this on some occasions. I think many of us or all us know this sort of thing is going on. This is a new era in football where big money, legal and illicit money is driving or ruling the game. Take your pick.

You are correct that the latter defeats the former, thus the results. DL has won 3 matches, drawn 3 and lost 7. However, the practice continues though the results exhibit tremendous failure. We are calling up players age 29 and older that will be too old to compete in/for Qatar 2022 yet DL is rebuilding.

One last thought is that these players are still not paid to represent their country for the March matches, so I believe an understanding exists between the TTFA and the player for the call up. regardless, the players do not appear motivated to fight to the end for TnT, not sure its due to the lack of compensation or DL inability to motivate and inspire.

Sando, I know you pissed off at the national team. Yes, they underachieving. But to say the other CFU national teams have not improved is not true. But it is frustrating to see our team’s  gross inability to put away teams or hold a lead with 5 mins.  to go in a game.

Instead of looking at Sando frustration, look at the trend of consistent losses against Caribbean opposition in recent years. the proof is in the pudding regardless how you try to spin it

Based on what have they improved? Because they beating us or drawing us? That's easier for you to accept These same Caribbean teams getting slaughtered against their Central American counterparts. Yes they improved their record against us

Again, like in the Grenada game we had lots of chances and missed most. That is not good. We dominated but cannot score. That is worrisome. But like I said, these results will let them fellas know that they "not there as yet". They have a hell of a lot to do to win or place among the top 4 to go to the GC. This guys need to work on their own or they will not make it.

Since everybody so upset that we can lose to other Caribbean teams. If you were the coach or the President even, what would you do differently to guarantee we have more positive and satisfactory results. So far I have seen every coach, president and different combination of players on the losing end. To a certain extent why we are here today
nb: even in our World cup year(2005)..we lost to St Vincent, Antigua, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti.
then in friendlies pre-WC after beating Bahrain, we win 1(iceland, they take we record -10 years later ?),draw 1 (Peru), and went on to lose 3 friendlies in a row, 1 of those teams made WC. And like us was eliminated 1st round. Then followed by a draw and 2 loses in WC, we were out played, but not shamefully.  To a Team that got knocked out next stage, and the other in quarters. And we still all say a prayer and thanked God for (has)Been-E. Nobody call for his head.
I think the last time we soundly beat a team in our region besides our favorite whipping boys, St Vincent was more than 5 years ago. So tell meh again, what make we feel we so good and how we supposed to beat up everybody by just taking the field and in some cases trying out some fellas to see how they look.
So let me hear, no, tell everybody what y'all personal plans are to gaurantee we beating everybody and making our players and teams the greatest in the Caribbean, even while the rest of the world can't see it and not giving our guys major contracts in the top world leagues.
If we get a friendly next month against we boys St Vincent, tell us yuh program to gaurantee we will win, and if is the same team and program you will be using to gaurantee a more positive performance for WC 2022 - 3 years to qualifiers .

Fire DJW, Fire DL, Fire MoS, Fire PNM. hire UNC, Hire SH, Hire Pep bring back Been-E,  Flex for Pres, try this and then that and then try the reverse and everything would be fine ? what historical proof or divine enlightenment does one have to back that up. Besides this sense of entitlement.
My only suggestion, TT socalled fans just need to chill and let people do the work (players and staff), join the staff and actually do some work, run for the office so you can actively contribute if yuh to old to train or  volunteer your divine assistance. Other than that we can offer different suggestions to and for trials and team composition in we rumshop, and stop pelting critical busshead at the ppl who actually in the spotlight trying to represent us. Every time is not the first time, we true true fans have to stop carrying on like it is, and leave that for the fairweather ppl who doh know better. This is not settling is actually doing something about it or not.

SH plus a full contingent, fire the house negro and his tow the line coach..

Allow someone who actually can get funding for the team and players and revamp the whole program, from youth level up

That’s what needs to happen, actually prepare the players and have real friendlies and camps that actually benefit the national team

Secondly, bring Cfu together to get 2 and a half spots for the wc, which should have happened eons ago

But it didn’t because we have some subservient heads who can’t think for themselves and don’t have the belly to unite and stand up and say, we need spots
