“There has been a lot of rant and rave from Super League clubs (the second tier of Trinidad and Tobago football) in terms of their level of football. So this is another opportunity for us in the Pro League to show we are still the dominant league in the country,” continued Eve.

Super League clubs (the second tier of Trinidad and Tobago football) in terms of their level of football, according to Angus.  Well, the pro-league clubs looked 2nd tier in the recent concacaf football.

Hear what going on: dahis de Pro League office differentiating that they are the top dogs. With the SL having increased visibility, the PL sees a need to draw clear lines.

My take: The words in parentheses are not from Angus. They are from the writer.

North East Stars drawn to face Siparia Spurs in big money FA Trophy.
ttproleague.com.

Title holders North East Stars must travel to second tier club Siparia Spurs when the 2017 FA Trophy competition kicks off on the weekend of September 16-17 with the Round of 64.

It is one of eight pairings that includes Pro League clubs against lower league sides, while Central FC are against Morvant Caledonia United in the only all-Pro League clash of the Round of 64.

All this, along with huge cash incentives totally TT$415,000., were revealed on Tuesday afternoon during the preliminary round draw at the Media Room of the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.

Venues and times are not yet determined although all participating clubs were to indicate their home venue prior to the draw.

The 2017 FA Trophy will involve all ten (10) Pro League clubs, nineteen (19) Super League sides, six (6) each from the Northern FA, Eastern FA, Central FC, Southern FA and Tobago FA, and five (5) from the Eastern Counties Football Union (ECFU)—all hoping to advance to the TT$100,000 final.

The overall champions will, in fact, walk away with a total purse of TT$135,000 due to—for the first time in the tournament which have gone without prize money in its last few editions—a prize structure that will see winning teams of the Round of 64, Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarter finals, and Semi Finals earn TT$3,000., TT$5,000., TT$7,000., TT$9,000. and TT$11,000. respectively.

“It’s a great motivator for all the clubs involved, knowing the current situation clubs are in for financial support,” said North East Stars head coach Derek King.

Ewing Davis, vice president of the tournament organizers, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), said the competition currently stands without a sponsor and, at present, the prize monies would have to come from the FA.

Teams will also benefit from gate receipts through to the quarter final round before the FA takes control for the semi-final and final stages.

Spurs are currently tenth on the Super League’s division one standings while North East Stars are third on the Pro League standings but inactive till September 8 due to a break in the PL to facilitate the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s Senior Team preparations for crucial FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying.

“It’s tough trying to keep players motivated at the moment by just training and playing practice matches,” said King, who took charge of North East Stars last May. “But we will try our best to be ready when the FA Trophy comes around. We are the defending champions.

“We also know that the FA Trophy is tough; it’s a knockout tournament and you have to be on top your game not taking anyone for granted. Some teams in the Super League are good challenges for Pro League opponents.”

Two years ago, when the competition was last contested, North East Stars, led by former coach Angus Eve, won their second FA Trophy by defeating four-time former winners W Connection 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 draw at the Ato Boldon Stadium on March 29, 2015.

King also FA Trophy success when he defeated Connection in the 2009 final to hand Joe Public the crown with a 3-2 win.

Connection, who last had their hands on the FA Trophy by defeating Couva rivals Central FC in the 2013/14 final on penalties, must host ECFU side Tamana United on Sunday 17 September while Club Sando, Eve’s present club, must travel against Northern FA side Cultural Roots.

Three-time former winners San Juan Jabloteh are drawn against EFA side La Horquetta XF while six-time former champions Defence Force must face NFA’s Belmont FC. Police FC, another Pro League campaigner and three-time former winners, and WASA, the 2006 champions, will meet in the Round of 64 while Point Fortin Civic, the 1969 champions, are against EFA side Red Hill FC.

Since the debut of the professional teams into the FA Trophy competition in 1999, clubs from the former Professional Football League (PFL) and the current Pro League have won the trophy in all but 2006 when WASA became surprise winners. WASA defeated two top flight clubs including North East Stars 4-2 on penalties in the final following a 3-3 draw.

TTFA agrees to $.1M FA Cup winner’s cheque.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Thirty-one matches have been scheduled for this weekend, as 62 vie for the $100,000 winner’s cheque at stake when the T&T Football Association National FA Trophy Competition gets underway at the weekend with matches across T&T.

On Saturday, T&T Super League leaders Hydro Tech Guaya United will plunge into action against D Marie Hill Youths at 4 pm at the D Hill Recreation Ground in Sangre Grande.

Coach Ron La Forrest, known as the “Professor”, is attempting to shake off a few niggling injury concerns in his camp, assuring his team will be ready for any game including the FA Cup encounter. Yesterday he told Guardian Media Sports he had a stern talk with his players after they failed to step up to the plate when they were given an opportunity. “Because of injuries to a few players on the team, we had to use three bench players and they did not perform the way they were expected to, so I had to impress upon them the importance of seizing the opportunity when they are given,” La Forrest explained.

D Marie Hill Youths are winners of the Eastern Counties Football Union (ECFU) League competition last year and will be hoping to create a major upset on Saturday. Apart from the $100,000 cash prize the winner of the tournament will also receive 25 gold medals and a trophy, while the runner-up will walk away with $25,000 and 25 silver medals. Other cash incentives include winner of round of 32—$3,000, winner of round of 16—$5,000, winner of round of eight—$7,000, winners of quarterfinals—$9,000, winners of semifinals $11,000.

Hydro Tech Guaya United are one of eight Super League teams in action on Saturday. The others are the University of T&T (UTT), Prisons FC, which campaign in the Championship Division, Perseverance Ball Runners, Siparia Spurs, Cunupia FC, Harlem Strikers and Bethel FC.

The university men will begin their campaign at their O’Meara Campus Ground against Northern FA champs Malta Carib Alcons from 4 pm, while the Prisons officers will face Manzan United, another ECFU team at 4 pm at the Manzanilla Recreation Ground.

Also Saturday, a clash between T&T Pro League teams Central FC and Morvant Caledonia AIA will take centre stage at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, at 4 pm, while W Connection and San Juan Jabloteh will take the field against Tamana United at the Ato Boldon Stadium and La Horquetta XF at the Larry Gomes Stadium from 4 pm, respectively.

W Connection humiliate Tamana 12-0, N/E Stars whip Super League’s Siparia Spurs and Morv’t Caledonia boot Central out in FA Trophy first round
ttproleague.com.

Pro League powerhouse W Connection flexed their muscles against lower league side Tamana United on Sunday, trashing the Eastern Counties Football Union (ECFU) outfit 12-0 in the 2017 FA Trophy Round-of-64 action ahead of Tuesday’s Pro League clash against bitter Couva rivals Central FC.

Central, the three-time defending Pro League champions and two-time former FA finalists, were the only top-flight team not to advance out of the FA Trophy Round-of-64 after they were sent packing with a 2-0 loss against fellow Pro League campaigners and three-time former FA winners Morvant Caledonia United on Saturday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field.

Guyanese forward Sheldon Holder (27th minute) and veteran full-back Kareem Joseph (65th minute) scored for Morvant Caledonia who lifted the prestigious title in 2008, 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Also on Saturday, San Juan Jabloteh crushed Eastern Football Association (EFA) side La Horquetta XF 7-1 at the Larry Gomes Stadium, and defending FA Trophy champions North East Stars whipped Super League outfit Siparia Spurs 5-1 at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground.

Sean Bonval (5th & 27th minutes) and Jairo Lombardo (33rd & 68th minutes) both finished with two goals apiece while Julio Noel (8th minute), Kadeem Hutchinson (10th minute) and Dominic Douglas (79th minute) each had a goal for the three-time former FA winners, Jabloteh, against La Horquetta.

While in Palo Seco, Anselm Jackson (69th minute), Keston George (43rd minute) and Qian Grosvenor (83rd minute) all scored on debut for North East Stars after switching from St. Ann’s Rangers, Central and Connection respectively in the PL transfer window, as Spurs crumbled late, conceding two more items from Jalani Felix (90th minute) then Elton John (90’+2 minute) from the penalty spot.

On Sunday, Point Fortin Civic hammered Eastern Football Association (EFA) side Red Hill FC 5-1 with a hat-trick from Jabari Mitchell (19th, 49th & 70th minutes) and a goal each from Keron Neptune (74th minute) and Jerimiah Kesar 89th minute) in Maloney, while Defence Force cruised to a 3-0 win over Northern Football Association (NFA) side Belmont FC, and Police FC (2-1), Club Sando (2-1) and St. Ann’s Rangers (1-0) edged Super League’s WASA FC, Cultural Roots (NFA) and Central Football Association (CFA) side Perseverance Ball Runners respectively.

But nothing compared to the licks suffered by Tamana United when Connection visited.

St. Lucian forward Malik St. Prix (14th, 18th & 23rd minutes) and Trinidad and Tobago international striker Marcus Joseph (27th, 30th & 71st minutes) each ended with a hat-trick, while winger Neil Benjamin Jr. (15th & 83rd minutes) and Suriname international forward Dimitri Apai (78th & 80th minutes) each scored twice, all after defender Ronell Paul opened the scoring in the fourth minute with his debut Connection goal.

Daniel Diaz (65th minute) also got on the scoresheet for Connection to advance into the Round-of-32 carded for September 30 and October 1.

Connection will look to transfer Sunday’s form into their league fixture against Central FC from 6pm on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium. North East Stars will visit Club Sando from 8pm at the Couva venue in a top-of-the-table clash to complete the double-header, while Point Fortin Civic must host Morvant Caledonia from 6pm at Mahaica Oval on the same day and simultaneously at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field, Police FC must welcome San Juan Jabloteh.

FA Trophy pits Eve’s Club Sando against La Forest’s Guaya in one of four Pro League v Super League clashes confirmed.
ttproleague.com.

Club Sando head coach Angus Eve will come face to face in competition with head coach Ron La Forest, one of the men he credits for his success in football, when his Pro League outfit hosts Guaya United in the 2017 FA Trophy.

The sides of Eve and La Forest, who are both Carenarge residents and ex-Trinidad and Tobago international stars, were pitted against each other in one of four Pro League versus Super League clashes already confirmed during Friday’s random draw for the FA Trophy Round-of-32, which proposed dates are September 30, October 1, 4 and 5.

La Forest’s Guaya United are currently positioned at the summit of the Super League while Eve’s Club Sando are third on the top-flight league.

Eve, who still holds the record (117) international caps for Trinidad and Tobago, in a recent interview hailed La Forest as one of influential figures in his footballing life.

Eve, a First Citizens Sports Foundation Hall of Famer, said with the support of his parents and later guidance from national coaches Bertille St. Clair and La Forest, and the late Richard Abraham, an ex-Joe Public and T&T national team manager, and others, he was able to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional footballer and captain of his country.

Sando and Guaya advanced from the Round-of-64 (first round) with wins over Cultural Roots (2-1) and D’Marie Hill Youths (1-0) respectively last weekend. See full 2017 FA Trophy Round-of-64 results including W Connection’s 12-0 win over Tamana United.

Pro League clubs W Connection, Morvant Caledonia United and San Juan Jabloteh must host Super League’s Bethel United, Stokely Vale FC and Defence Force respectively as determined by the random draw.

While Police FC must await the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA)’s decision on a protest action by Super League’s WASA FC who lost 2-1 to the Pro League outfit in the Round-of-64. If the FA’s ruling stands in favour of the result, Police will host Super League’s University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in a fifth Pro League versus SL clash.

TTFA president David John-Williams, following the Round-of-32 draw, pleaded with clubs to work together to try and rebuild the country’s football. He reminded that first mentioned teams of each round of the draw are responsible for the venue and that the FA Trophy must be a priority. The FA boss said the financial incentive awarded by his administration for wins in each round should help teams offset some costs.

For the first time in the history of the tournament the FA will reward winning teams of the Round-of-64, Round-of-32, Round-of-16, quarter finals and semi-finals cash prizes of TT$3,000., TT$5,000., TT$7,000., TT$9,000., and TT$11,000 respectively while the champions and runners-up will walk away with TT$100,000 and TT$25,000 respectively.

Other Round-of-32 matchups include defending champions North East Stars to travel to Southern Football Association (SFA) side Pitchmen FC; Defence Force (Pro League) against Trinity Rangers (EFA), and St. Ann’s Rangers against the winners of Fire Service/Black Rock. See full Round-of-32 matchups below.

The proposed date for the rescheduled Fire Service versus Black Rock Round-of-64 fixture is Wednesday 27 September.

Police FC advances in FA.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

T&T Pro League’s Police FC will take their place in the round-of-32 in the T&T Football Federation FA Trophy competition after a protest lodged by its round-of-64 opponent, WASA FC of the T&T Super League was dismissed by the Competition Committee.

When round-of-64 action took place on September 16 and 17, Police eked out a last gasp 2-1 win over WASA at the latter’s St Joseph Ground.

However, WASA lodged a protest with the T&TFA with regards to one of the goals scored by the Lawmen, but after deliberations on Sunday last, a decision was taken to uphold the original result of the match, which will now see Police FC taking on another Super League team, the University of T&T (UTT) in the round-of-32 this weekend.

Sangre Grande-based North East Stars, champions in 2003 and 2014/2015 will continue its quest for a second straight T&T Football Federation FA Trophy crown and third in club history with a round-of-32 clash with Southern Football Association’s Pitchment FC.

Stars under the guidance of first year head coach Derek King, a former national defender and Joe Public winning coach (five titles in one season) kicked off its title defense with a 5-1 trashing of Super League’s Siparia Spurs on Sunday September 17 at Palo Seco while Pitchment FC had a 5-4 penalty-kicks win over fella SFA club Serial Strikers after a 0-0 draw.

Overall, it was a favourable draw for the remaining clubs from the T&T Pro League as they were all pitted against lower league opponents.

FA Trophy Round-of-32 schedule: intriguing Club Sando, Guaya United clash in Couva plus more
ttproleague.com.

Guaya United, the current Super League leaders, avoided a monster clash against Pro League 2017 front runners North East Stars and W Connection in last week’s random draw of the 2017 FA Trophy Round-of-32—but Ron La Forest’s Green Army were pitted against the PL’s third-placed Club Sando, an outfit coached by his close friend and past student of the game, Angus Eve.

“This is a match to see,” said one Super League official to another, during the final announcement of the Round-of-32 match-ups by Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president David John-Williams on September 22 at the Media Room of the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The Round-of-32 will be contested on October 1, 4 and 5 at more than a dozen already-confirmed venues across Trinidad and Tobago.

“Carenage versus Carenage!” shouted a club official, highlighting that both La Forest and Eve are Carenage-born.

“Master versus student,” Eve poked fun at the situation this week as his side prepare to host Guaya from 7pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Wednesday.

However the Sando coach says his side will maintain priority on qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League, which means finishing in the Pro League top two.

“I have a lot of respect for Ron, but this is just a match for me,” said Eve, who led North East Stars to the FA Trophy the last time it was contested back in 2014/15.

“My mantra this season is qualifying Sando for the CONCACAF Champions League and to do that we must first finish in the top two of the Pro League. So we are going to maintain our priority in the Pro League. We used a weaker team, testing some of our [non-regulars] in the FA [Trophy] first round (in a 2-1 win over Cultural Roots) and we will do same against Guaya United who I consider a professional team playing in the Super League.

“They (Guaya) have a Pro League team and a former national coach who coached at various national levels as well as clubs such as San Juan Jabloteh, Joe Public and Ma Pau, and even led St. Anthony’s College to a national championship. They have players from the Pro League such as Keon Joseph, brothers Glenton Wolffe and Anthony Wolfe and others.

“They have a professional unit down there and coach known as the ‘professor’. They are not crying out for sponsorship like teams in the Pro League. Their coach drives a new and very expensive vehicle branded by their sponsors. No Pro League team have that! His salary is even higher than some Pro League coaches and players are being paid on par with Pro League clubs.

“A team with that sort of community support and resources should definitely be a Pro League franchise. If they win the Super League or FA Trophy they still can’t go further like into the Caribbean Club Championship or to CONCACAF. They should be playing at the highest level in the country,” ended Eve who played under La Forest during his time with the Trinidad and Tobago national team and credits the former national coach as one of the influential figures in his footballing life.

FA Trophy Round-of-32 action kicks off on Sunday with six match-ups inclusive of Morvant Caledonia United’s hosting of Tobago’s Super League side Stokely Vale FC from 3:30pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Other Sunday matches include Defence Force’s Pro League outfit taking on Trinity Rangers from 3:45pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium; Point Fortin Civic hosting Tobago’s Signal Hill United from 4pm at Mahaica Oval; and defending FA Trophy champions North East Stars visiting Pitchmen FC from 7pm at La Brea Recreation Ground.

Jorsling bags five as D/Force, Morv’t Caledonia and title holders N/E Stars all progress in FA Trophy.
ttproleague.com.

Devorn Jorsling scored five goals, with his first three converted from the penalty spot, as Defence Force’s Pro League outfit marched into the FA Trophy 2017 Round-of-16 with a comprehensive 10-0 win over Eastern Football Association (EFA) side Trinity Rangers last Sunday.

Jorsling, the Pro League’s all-time top scorer, was clinical versus ‘keeper Jerry Woodley, who stood between the sticks for Trinity Rangers down at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, to net from the spot in the 9th, 24th and 27th minutes.

Jorsling, the 33-year-old veteran Defence Force forward who scored the opening goal in his side’s 3-0 win over Belmont FC in the Round-of-64 a fortnight ago, also scored late in either half (45th & 80th minutes) from open play to finish with five goals to his name against Trinity Rangers while teammate Hashim Arcia scooped a hat-trick, scoring in the 31st, 83rd and 84th minutes for the six-time former champions.

Forward Kellon Serrette (42nd minute) and winger Jemel Sebro (55th minute) also had a goal in the romp for coach Marvin Gordon’s Army/Coast Guard combination.

Fellow Pro League clubs Morvant Caledonia United and FA Trophy holders North East Stars also progressed out of Round-of-32 action on Sunday.

North East Stars defeated hosts Pitchmen FC 4-2 at the La Brea Recreation Ground. Derek King’s men took charge of the contest with Kishun Seecharan (6th minute), Kerry Baptiste (19th minute) and Jomoul Francois (23rd minute) sending the visitors in at the break with a 3-nil cushion.

Elijah Alleyne gave the Pitchmen belief with a quick-fire double, netting in the 79th and 81st minutes, but Giovanni Abraham’s debut goal for the Stars first team in the 84th minute put the match out of the visitors reach.

Elsewhere at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, three-time former champions Morvant Caledonia rallied from an early one-goal deficit to level 1-1 late through a Sheldon Holder strike before ousting Tobago’s Stokely Vale United 4-3 on penalties.

Round-of-32 play resumes on Wednesday 4 Oct. with three more Pro League versus Super League clashes among other fixtures. W Connection are against Super League’s cellar-placed Bethel United from 3:45pm at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium; San Juan Jabloteh will host Defence Force’s Super League side from 5pm at Barataria Oval; and Police FC will welcome UTT at the Police Barracks from 6pm.

Meanwhile the highly anticipated Club Sando-Guaya United clash has been shifted to Thursday 5 Oct. from 3:30pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Also on Thursday, MIC-IT St. Ann’s Rangers will host Fire Services Central Football Association side that narrowly defeated Tobago’s Black Rock FC 4-3 in their rescheduled Round-of-64 fixture on Sunday.

Brazilian Silva among stars as W Connection sends Bethel packing out of FA Trophy.
ttproleague.com.

Brazilian striker Euller Eduardo Silva Couto produced two assists in his first start for W Connection in a 3-0 win over Super League side Bethel United when Round-of-32 action in the 2017 FA Trophy continued on Wednesday.

Silva, a 23-year-old former attacker of Brazil’s Futebol Clube do Porto, set up goals scored by St. Lucian forward Shivorne Malik St. Prix and Daniel Diaz on either side of the break before substitute forward Dimitri Apai completed the comfortable win at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium to send the four-time FA Trophy champions into the Round-of-16 carded for Sunday 22 October.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, a hat-trick from Jameel Perry saw Police FC’s Pro League outfit make like work of Super League’s University of Trinidad and Tobago for a 3-1 win at the St. James Barracks.

Perry scored in the 6th, 68th and 76th minutes for coach Richard Hood’s Police while Trinidad and Tobago’s 2006 World Cup striker Cornell Glen grabbed the lone item for the Clayton Morris-coached UTT in the 9th minute.

Police’s Super League outfit also advances into the next round of FA Trophy action after edging Southern Football Association side San Fernando Giants 1-0 in Point Fortin courtesy an 85th-minute Jason Boodram strike.

There was, however, Pro League casualty at the Barataria Oval when a double from ex-PL standout Michael Edwards lifted Defence Force’s Super League side to a 2-1 comeback win over hosts San Juan Jabloteh.

Jamaican midfielder Keithy Simpson fired the two-time former FA Trophy winners Jabloteh ahead after 18 minutes but veteran Edwards first equalised for soldiers in the 33rd minute before completing his double with the winner in the 72nd minute.

In Marabella though, it was one-way traffic for Pro League’s W Connection against Bethel although the Savonetta Boys’ assistant coach Earl Jean fielded a number of non-regulars such as Silva, 21-year-old Venezuelan left-back Frank Padilla Gil and ex-Point Fortin Civic defender Weslie John who were signed in August.

But John, 26, back in Trinidad following a stints El Salvador (CD Universidad de El Salvador) and Belarus (Isloch Minsk Raion), lasted no more than seven minutes after picking up a harsh knock from Bethel’s Nkosei Chance.

Jean meanwhile stood in charge with head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier currently in Mexico as assistant coach to Dennis Lawrence with the T&T national team for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against El Tri.

St. Prix, scorer of a hat-trick in a 12-0 crushing of Tamana United in the Round-of-64, broke the deadlock four minutes from the break with a flicked header past the broad stature of Bethel goalie Kenneil Roberts.

The lanky St. Prix redeemed himself after two failed chances by connecting to Silva’s perfectly-placed left side cross to send the Savonetta Boys in at the interval with a 1-0 lead.

Roberts, who produced a great save after fifteen minutes to put behind a St. Prix header, later failed to match a brilliantly struck Diaz strike six minutes into the second half as Connection found the 2-0 cushion.

The match was put further out of Bethel’s reach when Suriname international Apai made it 3-0 by executing a cool finish past a hapless Roberts thanks to a diagonal feed to the left by Jameel Antoine.

Antoine should have ended Connection with a five-nil score but the midfielder miraculously turned two separate scoring chances -- thanks to two Silva feeds -- at the death wide with the vacant goal at his mercy while substitute Shaquille John was denied by the crossbar.

Other Wednesday results includes Andy London and Amin Julien both finishing hat-trick heroes for Club Sando Moruga in a 6-3 win over Sangre Grande Dream Team in Grand Chemin and 1976 FC Phoenix cruising to a 4-1 win over fellow Super League side Prisons FC at the Youth Training Centre in Arouca.

Round-of-32 action resumes Thursday (today) with the highly anticipated Club Sando-Guaya United clash from 3:30pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium. Elsewhere MIC-IT St. Ann’s Rangers will host Fire Service from 4pm at St. Augustine Secondary School Ground; FC Santa Rosa will host Santa Flora FC from 3:45pm at Arima Velodrome, and Cunupia FC meets Central Soccer World from 6:30pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field.

Guaya outlast Sando on marathon kicks to advance; Rangers, Santa Rosa and Cunupia complete Round-of-16 list
ttproleague.com.

Guaya United topped Club Sando 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in a highly anticipated FA Trophy clash between the Super League leaders and the third-place Pro League outfit on Thursday.

Kion Joseph, a former San Juan Jabloteh and Trinidad and Tobago youth midfielder, celebrated the winning sudden death kick from the spot at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium to send two-hundred-plus Green Army loyalists into wild celebrations as their side progressed to the Round-of-16 which is carded for October 22.

But a suspected offside equaliser and an ignored penalty shout in the final minute of regular time stood out against Sando before the “Oranges” had themselves to blame when Keron Cornwall, who looked to have been fouled in the box at the death, failed to beat Guaya goalie Erskine Johnson on the fifth regulation kick from the spot after Leroy Jones had drilled Guaya’s fourth kick miserably wide.

Johnson, though, made the crucial save, denying the Sando substitute who he had also denied three minutes into the second half.

Guaya, like in open play were resolute in the end, with Justin Fournillier, Jody Allsop and Kion Joseph proving clinical against Sando goalkeeper Kelvin Henry from the spot, as did ex-North East Stars players Glenton Wolfe and Kevin Jagdeosingh and ex-W Connection standout Andrei Pacheco in the first three kicks.

Akim Armstrong, Nical Stephens, Kemuel Rivers and Michael Basdeo had Sando on a roll and Tyrone Charles continued the trend after Cornwall’s failed effort, but the end for coach Angus Eve’s men arrived after Kevon Piper missed the entire target on the seventh kick.

Similarly, Piper spilled on scoring opportunity in the 79th minute after Armstrong had done well to escape defender Wolfe inside the right of the area before picking out the second-half substitute in the middle of the area.

Scoring would have restored Sando’s lead and possibly secure the victory.

However Sando must now refocus on “CONCACAF priority” -- a top-two finish in the Pro League -- as early as Sunday’s return to the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium to take on second-placed W Connection from 3:30pm.

Poking fun last week, Eve rightfully called his competitive clash with Ron La Forest a “master versus student,” having played under the Guaya coach at national level and credits “the professor” as a major influence in his football development.

Eve also advocated that Guaya, a team with strong community support and resources, should be a Pro League franchise.

“They are a professional team playing in the Super League,” said Eve back then. “If they win the Super League or the FA Trophy they still can’t go further like into the Caribbean Club Championship or to CONCACAF. They should be playing at the highest level in the country.”

Sando had taken the lead on 18 minutes when defender Leslie Joel Russell powerfully guided a Tyrone Charles corner past Johnson.

But Guaya levelled the scores 1-1 three minutes from the half through a suspected off-side Jagdeosingh goal.

Jagdeosingh, the brother of Trinidad and Tobago’s Thailand-based forward Kendall Jagdeosingh, had given the Guaya supporters belief on the half-hour mark although his strike from the top of the area made for a comfortable take by Henry.

The visitors’ had another lift in confidence when seven minutes later a Jagdeosingh header – though tame – forced a clearance off the line from Russell and a subsequent gather by Henry who was initially forced to avert danger from a right side cross.

Eventually the equaliser did arrive for Guaya and following two second half tries and fourteen kicks from the penalty spot later, the Green Army are through to the Round-of-16. (See full Round-of-64 and 32 results below)

Also on Thursday, MIC-IT St. Ann’s Rangers and FC Santa Rosa advanced with comfortable wins over Fire Service and Santa Flora 3-0 and 3-1 respectively, before Cunupia FC completed the Round-of-16 list with an 8-0 romp against Central Soccer World.

Ex-Pro Leaguer Kevon Woodley led with a beaver-trick for Cunupia while Stevon Stoute, Kerwin Valley, Hakeem Legall and Kern Roberts each had a goal in the lopsided affair at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field.

In St. Augustine, St. Ann’s Rangers had a goal each from Micah Lansiquot, Kazim Donald and Neil Gerard Mitchell against Fire, to join six other Pro League clubs:Morvant Caledonia United, Defence Force, North East Stars, Point Fortin Civic, W Connection and Police FC in the Round-of-16.

Khelon Mitchell and ex-Pro Leaguers Ryan Stewart and Keron Cornwall produced the goals in Arima for Santa Rosa, the club of Super League president Keith Look Loy which will join fellow Super League sides Central 500 Spartans, 1976 FC Phoenix, Club Sando Moruga, Defence Force and Police (SL).

WASA FC’s Eastern Football Association side are the only zonal team to advance to the next round.

The Round-of-16 match-ups will be determined by a random draw on October 18 and contested on October 22, while the quarterfinals, semi-finals and final are carded for November 12, November 26 and December 17 respectively.

Guaya dumps Club Sando from FA.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Guaya United pulled off the second major upset of the T&T Football Association FA Trophy competition when it dumped T&T Pro League title challengers Club Sando out of the tournament at the round-of-32 hurdle, 6-5 on penalty-kicks on Thursday night.

This after both teams battled to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation-time at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella with defender Leslie Joel Russell heading in the opener for Club Sando from a Tyrone Charles corner before Kelvin Jagdeosingh, the brother of T&T’s Thailand-based forward Kendall Jagdeosingh, drew Guaya level, three minutes from the half-time whistle.

In the penalty-kicks shoot-out, Kion Joseph, a former San Juan Jabloteh and T&T youth midfielder, converted the winning sudden-death penalty-kick from the spot to send two-hundred-plus ‘Green Army’ into the round-of-16 which is carded for October 22.

However, Club Sando had themselves to blame for the loss, as Keron Cornwall failed to beat Guaya goalkeeper Erskine Johnson with his team’s fifth penalty attempt after Leroy Jones had drilled Guaya’s fourth kick wide.

Johnson, though, made the crucial save, denying the Club Sando substitute who he also denied three minutes into the second-half.

Guaya, like in open play were resolute in the end, with Glenton Wolfe. Jagdeosingh, Andrei Pacheco, Justin Fournillier and Jody Allsop scoring their other attempts while Akim Armstrong, Nical Stephens, Kemuel Rivers and Michael Basdeo scored the first four Club Sando efforts followed by Cornwall’s missed effort, a a Tyrone Charles goal, and then Kevon Piper missed effort to exit the competition. he entire target on the seventh kick.

At St Augustine Senior Secondary School Ground, Warren Street, St Augustine, cellar-placed Pro league club MIC-IT St Ann’s Rangers got a goal each from national Under-20 striker Micah Lansiquot, Kazim Donald and Neil Mitchell in a 3-0 defeat of Central Football Association’s Fire Service to join six other Pro League clubs, Morvant Caledonia United, Defence Force, North East Stars, Pt Fortin Civic, W Connection and Police FC in the final 16.

Also on Thursday, FC Santa Rosa (Super League) whipped Santa Flora FC (SFA) 3-1 respectively and Cunupia FC clobbered Central Soccer World 8-0 with ex-Pro Leaguer and national beach soccer striker Kevon Woodley scoring a with a beaver-trick at the Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Field, Mucurapo.

The round-of-16 match-ups will be determined by a random draw on October 18 and contested on October 22, while the quarterfinals, semi-finals and final are carded for November 12, November 26 and December 17 respectively.

Morvant against holders NE Stars, plus four Pro League versus Super League clashes among Round-of-16 match-ups
ttproleague.com.

Morvant Caledonia United will attempt another upset in the 2017 FA Trophy competition when they take on defending champions North East Stars from 3:30pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in one of seven Round-of-16 clashes on Sunday.

Morvant Caledonia, FA Trophy champions of 2008, 2011-12 and 2012-13, ousted current three-time Pro League holders Central FC 2-0 in the first round (Round-of-64) last month before edging Tobago’s Stokely Vale United on penalties following a 1-1 second round (Round-of-32) draw.

Last Monday’s random draw pitted Morvant Caledonia against current Pro League leaders North East Stars in the only all-Pro League match-up for a place in the FA Trophy quarter-final round on November 12. The semi-finals and final are carded for November 26 and December 17 respectively.

“[The ambition] is to go all the way and win the FA Trophy, again,” said Morvant Caledonia assistant coach Abdallah Phillips, whose side must also face North East Stars on Tuesday in Round Two Match Day Four of the Pro League.

Morvant Caledonia currently occupy fourth on the Pro League standings, eleven points adrift the Stars with six league games left.

“Going all the way and winning the FA Trophy—the most prestigious title in the land would put some gloss on the season for us,” continued Phillips. “But it won’t take away from what we are trying to achieve in the Pro League. We are fourth in the (Pro) League presently and committed to finishing as high as possible.”

Phillips continues to serve as caretaker with regular head coach Jamaal Shabazz currently away on international duty as head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 Girls at the 2017 Caribbean Girls U17 finals in Haiti.

North East Stars, champions of 2003 and 2014-15, defeated Super League side Siparia Spurs 5-1 in the first round before dispatching South Football Association (SFA) side Pitchmen FC 4-2 in the second round.

W Connection, four-time former champions (1999, 2000, 2002 & 2013-14) and runners-up to North East Stars when the FA Trophy was last contested, will host Cunupia FC from 3:30pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in one of four Pro League-versus-Super League clashes on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Sunday, MIC-IT St. Ann’s Rangers must travel to Grand Chemin against Club Sando Moruga from 3:30pm and simultaneously at the Police Barracks in St. James, Point Fortin Civic will go up against Police FC’s Super League side.

Police FC’s Pro League outfit, meanwhile, must face WASA FC’s Eastern Football Association (EFA) side from 4:30pm at WASA Ground in St. Joseph.

Defence Force FC’s Pro League and Super League outfits will host Central 500 Spartans and Guaya United respectively in a double-header (4pm and 6pm kick-off times) at the Barataria Oval.

Then on Wednesday, FC Santa Rosa will travel to 1976 FC Phoenix from 5pm at Canaan Recreation Ground in Tobago to complete Round-of-16 play.

Holders N/E Stars knocked out of FA Trophy by Morv’t Caledonia.
ttproleague.com.

Connection, D/Force, Civic, Police and C/S Moruga also progress to quarters.

Morvant Caledonia United made another leap towards a fourth FA Trophy by ousting fellow Pro League compatriots and defending champions North East Stars 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in one of six Round-of-16 clashes contested on Sunday.

Teenaged Guyana forward Kelsy Benjamin arrived off the bench to level Morvant Caledonia on the hour mark at the Hasely Crawford Stadium with his first goal for the club after Keston George had put current Pro League leaders and 2003 and 2014-15 FA Trophy champions North East Stars in front on 29 minutes.

Unable to find the winner, both teams trashed it out from the penalty spot and Morvant Caledonia, FA Trophy champions of 2008, 2011-12 and 2012-13, eventually celebrated their first win in two attempts in all competitions under caretaker Abdallah Phillips—the assistant coach holding the reigns in absence of regular head coach Jamaal Shabazz who is expected back this week after international duty with the Trinidad and Tobago U17 Girls Team in Haiti.

Morvant Caledonia’s Kareem Joseph, Sheldon Holder, Kerry Daniel and Otev Lawrence all found the back of North East Stars goalkeeper Akel Clarke’s net while Jelani Felix stood the only scorer for the Stars with Glenroy Samuel between the sticks for the eventual winners.

Morvant Caledonia and North East Stars must lock horns for a second time in three days when the Stars return to the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday in Pro League action from 5pm at the training field.

Stars’ head coach Derek King, who will now return his focus on the Pro League crown with six league games left this season, reportedly said “[despite dominating] the (FA Trophy) affair” against Morvant Caledonia, his side deserved to be on the losing end having failed to convert their scoring opportunities.

Also progressing to the FA Trophy quarter-final stage carded for November 12 were four other Pro League outfits: W Connection, Defence Force, Police FC and Point Fortin Civic – all former champions – and Super League’s Club Sando Moruga.

Connection, four-time former champions, edged Super League’s Cunupia FC 3-2 in a fiery contest that saw three red cards, a missed penalty, a converted penalty, and a “Showtime” double at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

But six-time former champions Defence Force, led by an uninterrupted hat-trick from Trinidad and Tobago attacking midfielder Hashim Arcia, made light work of Central 500 Spartans, trashing the Super League outfit 5-1 at Barataria Oval.

Arcia scored in the 11th, 39th and 51st minutes for Defence Force before national teammate and defender Curtis Gonzales and Akil Morris got on the scoresheet in the 82th and 90th minutes respectively. Donavon Derrick scored the lone Spartans’ item in the 62nd minute.

Three-time former champions, Police FC, left it late against WASA FC’s Eastern Football Association (EFA) side for a 2-1 win through goals by Elijah Belgrave and Kenaz Williams 89th and 92nd minutes to overturn a one-goal deficit at WASA Ground in St. Joseph after Theo Hosein had given the hosts the lead on 59 minutes.

Elsewhere, Jabari Mitchell and Shaquille Dublin scored on either side of the break to earn 1969 champions Point Fortin Civic a 2-0 win over Police FC’s Super League side at Police Barracks in St. James.

But in Marabella, Connection and Cunupia turned the heat up on the wet Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Diaz fired Connection ahead after just seven minutes, turning Euller Eduardo Couto’s cross past Cunupia goalkeeper Keston Malchan. Then, Suriname international Dimitri Apai made it 2-0 on 53 minutes with a close range header after Diaz headed a Hughtun Hector’s left side corner back across the six-yard area.

But the diminutive Diaz and Cunupia left-back Tevin Mungo were sent off with direct red cards on the hour mark for violent conduct.

Referee Joel Cox, who awarded two penalties to Cunupia on the afternoon, also issued a direct red card to Cunupia midfielder Zavion Navarro deep in stoppage-time for what looked a hit to the face of Brazilian forward Couto.

Earlier ex-Pro Leaguer, Kevon “Showtime” Woodley, produced a double that kept Cunupia in the game and some neat tricks, including a cheeky heeled pass that created an opening for Navarro who saw his attempt crash off the upright in the 45th minute.

Woodley first sliced Connection’s lead in the 69th minute, wrong-siding Connection goalie Julani Archibald from the penalty spot after drawing a foul from defender Triston Hodge then showing teammate and another former Pro Leaguer Michael Yaw Darko how to keep his cool against the Savonetta Boys.

Darko had spilled overbar from the spot on 20 minutes after Hakeem Legall was pulled down in the area by enterprising Connection full-back Frank Padilla Gil. And moments later Archibald was at his best to keep out a strike from Legall.

But Connection despite wasting the majority of chances restored their two-goal advantage in the 71st minute when Alvin Jones, who was denied by the upright ten minutes into the second half, drilled a low Hector feed past Marchan for a 3-1 score.

“Showtime”, however, wasn’t done.

Woodley completed his double in the 75th minute, slotting the ball past a last-ditch attempt by Hodge to defend at the goal line after running free on a long pass from Stephen Julien and rounding goalkeeper Archibald.

But with Cunupia on the wrong side of a 3-2 score and self-destructing in the final moments, Connection are through to the quarter-finals.

Connection, second on the Pro League standings, will shift their focus to Tuesday’s league clash against Police FC from 3:30pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium. Simultaneously, Club Sando must take on Point Fortin Civic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium; Central FC against Defence Force at Larry Gomes Stadium; and St. Ann’s Rangers are to host San Juan Jabloteh at St. Augustine Secondary School Ground.

Morv’t Caledonia, Police through to FA Trophy semis in contrasting style.
ttproleague.com.

Former champions Morvant Caledonia United and Police FC, both of the Pro League, have booked their places into the 2017 FA Trophy semi-final round which is tentatively set November 26.

Morvant Caledonia edged Super League side Club Sando Moruga 1-0 courtesy Kareem Joseph’s late converted penalty before Police rallied from a goal down to beat rivals Defence Force 3-1 to complete the first quarter-final double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field on Tuesday afternoon.

Jemel Sebro fired Defence Force in front seconds into the second half, but a Todd Ryan equaliser from the penalty spot and late goals from Elijah Belgrave and Joshua Leach saw the Lawmen run away comfortable winners.

Two more Pro League-vs-Super League clashes will complete the quarter-final round on Wednesday (today) in another double-header at the same HCS training field with Point Fortin Civic taking on 1976 FC Phoenix of Tobago from 4pm and W Connection against Guaya United from 6:15pm.

Morvant Caledonia, a far cry from their 2008, 2011-12 and 2012-13 FA Trophy winning teams, struggled to find rhythm against the second tier Club Sando Moruga. But chances did come with Lester Joseph spilling overbar with the goal at his mercy in the 11th minute and quarter-of-an-hour later Quincy Ballah directed his shot too close to goalkeeper Alexei Julien, who put the attempt behind for a corner.

Julien, a former top-flight goalkeeper with Club Sando’s Pro League outfit, also made a diving save to keep out substitute Rufuson Pierre Louis’ half volley in the second half and moments earlier was lucky to see a Joseph free kick fly inches wide of his far top corner.

Julien, though, was wrong-sided in the 90th minute by Joseph, the last remnant of Morvant Caledonia’s FA Trophy winning teams of the past, who was clinical from the spot to put his side in front 1-0 after CS Moruga substitute defender Kernel Hamilton upended MCU substitute Sedale Mc Lean in the box.

High praise, however, should go Glenroy Samuel’s way after the Trinidad and Tobago and Morvant Caledonia ‘keeper pulled off back-to-back saves in stoppage-time to deny CS Moruga’s Kyle Morgan and Marcus John to preserve his side’s narrow advantage and eventual victory.

The second game, as expected from the oldest surviving rivalry in Trinidad and Tobago Football, did produce higher intensity, but a dog fight between six-time FA Trophy champions, Defence Force, and three-time champions, Police.

Defence Force, undefeated against the Blues in two previous meetings this season with a win and a draw in the Pro League, grabbed the lead on the restart through winger Sebro following a wonderful team move.

But the Army/Coast Guard combination, who will try to successfully defend the First Citizens Cup when they tackle W Connection in the 2017 final of that tournament on November 17, had their lead taken from under them when ten minutes later Ryan (T), fresh from scoring the winner in a 3-2 Pro League victory over San Juan Jabloteh last Sunday, converted from the spot to level the Lawmen 1-1.

Belgrave then put Richard Hood’s side ahead for the first time for a 2-1 lead on 88 minutes after a flurry of chances which saw defender Ryan O’Neil and midfielder Kaashif Thomas -- twice -- miss the target.

Belgrave had missed great chance off a low Keion Wilson cross six minutes into the game, but made no mistake in finding the back of goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke’s net from close range when the ball, played into the area from a right side Ryan cross, fell to his feet.

Belgrave, who scored one and set up another against Jabloteh, repeated the statistic in a space of three days.

Police had done everything possible—even dished out the better share of physical blows—and Defence Force were unable to drag themselves back into the game which ended when Blues’ substitute Leach, after a couple attempts to control a Belgrave cross into the box, fired past a late Clarke challenge for the 3-1 finish.

Results

Morvant Caledonia United 1 (Kareem Joseph 90’ pen.) vs Club Sando Moruga 0, at Hasely Crawford Stadium training field;

Connection edge Guaya to join Morv’t, Police in FA Trophy semis, but Phoenix upset Civic.
ttproleague.com.

Neil Benjamin Jr. scored his 15th goal in all competitions this season to lift W Connection to a 1-0 win over Super League side Guaya United on Wednesday night to complete the last four of the 2017 FA Trophy.

Connection, FA champions of 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2013-14, joined Pro League compatriots and former champions Morvant Caledonia United and Police FC, and 1976 FC Phoenix—the last remaining team of 19 Super League clubs that were part of the competition this season—into the semi-final round which is expected to be contested on November 26.

The random draw for the semi-final round is expected next week.

Phoenix, due to flight delays out of Tobago which resulted the game starting more than half hour late, had to step off the bus and onto the pitch for Wednesday’s opening game of another quarter-final double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field.

But coach Terry Williams’s side were celebrating their opening goal in only the second minute thanks to forward Andel Noray, who bagged both goals in the Tobagonians 2-0 win over Point Fortin Civic to eventually avoid an all-Pro League FA Trophy semi-finals.

Noray, who, in the past represented Joe Public, San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force at the Pro League level, headed past Civic second choice goalie Akini Adams for the early lead off a long throw-in -- assisted by the crosswind -- from the right by dreadlocked defender Simon Nedd.

Phoenix quickly went on the defensive and played on the counterattack through Noray, Noel Williams and Shelton Williams—a move that will work in favour of the Tobagonians.

Phoenix were almost impenetrable at the back on the smaller sized pitch and did find the cushion six minutes into the second half when Noray converted from the penalty spot -- with Trinidad and Tobago and Civic’s first choice ‘keeper Marvin Phillip watching from the bench -- after he was bulldozed to ground in the area by defender Kevon Rouse.

Civic’s best chance fell to second-half substitute Shaquille Dublin on the hour mark but the forward failed to make contact to Shackiel Henry’s cross from the right which beat the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Junior Roberts.

Henry then sent a powerful free kick inches wide of Roberts’s goal ten minutes from time, but Phoenix were denied a third by the crossbar when Dominique Kerr let fly a shot from the top of the box six minutes from time.

In the second game, Guaya, spurred on by their travelling supporters, enjoyed a flurry of early chances however Ron La Forest’s side’s best effort came three minutes into the second half when ex-Connection midfielder Andrei Pacheco sent a 30-yard left-footed strike inches wide of the top corner.

Connection, though, would snatch the eventual winner in the 79th minute when Benjamin put a low Dimitrie Apai cross into the back of the Erskine Johnson’s net after the Green Army ‘keeper had made a bag of brilliant saves to keep his side level with the Pro League powerhouse.

Moments earlier Johnson, who had done well to deny Marcus Joseph and Triston Hodge on either side of the break, made a brilliant double-save in the 68th minute denying Joseph then Apai on the rebound following a blistering run and cross from the right by Benjamin.

Stuart Charles Fevrier’s side, however, would end on a bitter-sweet note after Trinidad and Tobago defender Triston Hodge was sent off in stoppage-time on a direct red card for elbowing Guaya substitute Russell Alfred.

Morvant Caledonia, the 2009, 2011-12 and 2012-13 FA champions, were the first team to qualify for this season’s FA Trophy semis, narrowly getting by Super League’s Club Sando Moruga who gave away a penalty at the death on Tuesday before Police FC snapped Defence Force’s six-game winning streak in all competitions, defeating the Army/Coast Guard combination for the first time this season with a 3-1 comeback win.

Defence Force, however, will look rebound with defence of their First Citizens Cup when they take on W Connection in the 2017 final on November 17 at the Ato Boldon Stadium while Point Fortin Civic and Club Sando will contest the third-place game.

W Connection and Police FC have set up an all-Pro League final of the 2017 FA Trophy on December 17 after comfortable semi-final wins yesterday over Tobago’s 1976 FC Phoenix, 3-0, and Morvant Caledonia United, 5-1, respectively, at Ato Boldon Stadium.

Neil Benjamin Jr. put four-time champions Connection ahead in just the fourth minute of the semi-final one against Phoenix before veteran attacker Hughtun Hector (26’) and Suriname forward Dimitri Apai (75’) sent the Tobagonians packing.

Later, Kareem Freitas scored a hat-trick, netting in the 19th, 54th and 84th minutes at the Couva venue, interrupted by the break and a double from teammate Elijah Belgrave (47th & 51st minutes) to as the Lawmen dispatched three-time former champions Morvant Caledonia, who grabbed a consolation item in the 90th minute through Sedale Mc Lean.

It is the first time in more than two decades that three-time winners Police have reached a FA Trophy final -- 1996 being the previous – and will attempt to lift the trophy for the first time since 1994.

Meanwhile Connection, the recently crowned First Citizens Cup winners, are back into the FA final for the first time since 2015 — the last time it was contested — and will look to return the trophy to Savonetta for the first time since doing so at the end of the 2013-14 edition.

Connection will however tend to urgent matters against Morvant Caledonia United from 8pm on Tuesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in the final game of the 2017 Pro League to cement second place behind new PL champions North East Stars for a return to CONCACAF qualifiers.

Tuesday’s league action will kick off with Defence Force facing Club Sando from 3:30pm at the outside field of the Hasely Crawford Stadium before champions North East Stars sign off against San Juan Jabloteh from 6pm at Arima Velodrome.

Simultaneously, Point Fortin Civic will host St. Ann’s Rangers at Mahaica Oval and three-time former PL champions Central FC will welcome Police FC in the opening match of a double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

W Connection beat 10-man Police to 2017 FA Trophy crown.

W Connection celebrated a fifth FA Trophy, reuniting with the title they last won in 2014 after defeating 10-men Police FC 3-1 last night at the Home of Football, Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva to bring down the curtain on the 2017 season for top-flight clubs.

Veteran midfielder Hughtun Hector scored late on either side of the break to finish with a double and the eventual MVP award after Suriname international Dimitri Apai opened the 2017 final scoring for coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier’s men.

“It’s a great feeling; a Christmas feeling, to come away champions,” said W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean after his team were crowned the $100,000 2017 FA Trophy champions.

He added, “I think the players have given us so much this season and we are just proud of them. We knew that it was a long time since we took the FA Trophy and we are just satisfied with the work the players have done especially in the last couple weeks.

“All credit to Police, they played well; they gave a good fight. But like I told them, when they cross the white lines that’s when the battle starts and our players were brilliant.”

Three-time former champions Police, desperate to lift their first piece of silverware in over two decades, started the brighter of the two sides.

But the Richard Hood coached-Lawmen were made to rue a missed chance by midfielder Kaashif Thomas who failed to direct his glancing header off a Clevon Mc Fee cross on target in the 21st minute moments after the latter had sent a powerful free kick just high of the target.

Connection later turned the game on its head when Apai turned in a Marcus Joseph corner past goalkeeper Adrian Foncette on 32 minutes.

Joseph had two attempts including an attempted lob on Foncette, who later had to do well to put behind a Briel Thomas header off a Hector free kick before Police defender Ryan O’Neil had to clear at the goalmouth from the resulting corner.

O’Neil made another clearance at the goalmouth for the Lawmen seconds into the second half but Hector had already cushioned the 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2013/14 champions on the stroke of half time by putting Alvin Jones’ cross over the line for a 2-0 lead.

Jones also got close to having his name on the scoresheet much earlier – the eighth minute – with a powerful shot from distance from a well-executed set piece involving a left side Hector free kick.

And Hector was inches off another item on the hour mark when he turned a brilliant Apai cross towards goal, only to see his attempt roll beyond Foncette’s upright.

Police head coach Richard Hood turned to talented attacking brothers Kareem and Jameel Perry off the bench but had mixed fortunes.

Forward Jameel – only seconds after replacing veteran midfielder Todd Ryan – sliced the Lawmen’s deficit in half with a blast past Archibald from the edge of the box to put the score at 1-2 in the 67th minute.

But less than ten minutes after restoring belief, the game fell further out of reach when earlier substitute Kareem was sent off when referee Crystal Sobers issued the attacking midfielder a direct red card following a dangerous challenge near the half line.

A later substitute Joshua Leach did bring Police supporters to their feet in a packed covered stand when he pulled off an acrobatic scissor kick towards goal in the 89th minute. The attempt, however, was brilliantly matched by Archibald.

Then, in the final minute of regular time, Hector, with his second goal of the night from close up, sealed the 3-1 Connection victory at the end of a counterattack by running onto a right side Neil Benjamin cross which beat the reach of Foncette.

“It is good to see that our players have sacrificed a lot and the rewards are here,” continued Connection assistant coach Jean whose side finished runners-up to North East Stars in the Pro League as well as finished First Citizens Cup champions.

Jean explained that the sacrifices included a very hectic scheduled that involved – at times – competing every other day.

“This is for our players to see that they can push to the next level,” said the ex-W Connection and St. Lucia forward.

That next level he said, is to return to Caribbean champions’ status then on to the CONCACAF Champions League when they join North East Stars next season in the CONCACAF Caribbean Qualifiers.

Jean also praised the work of countryman and head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier, who also serves as assistant coach to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team.

“Coach (Charles-Fevrier) has done a wonderful job too,” said Jean. “He has been with the Trinidad and Tobago national team [but] has given us (Connection) his time even when he is away on international duty. He calls sometimes at 2am to see if everything is okay. The planning is here and you can see that the organization—though struggling financially—is maintaining what we do at Connection.

“It’s so good that our players can come away happy, going home for holidays with a comfortable victory. We are are really happy with what our players achieved. We want to also thank all the supporters who came out tonight because we are trying to [rebuild] our fan base,” he ended.
