Littbarski hopes Yorke will make it

Dwight Yorke knows he only has to glance across the dressing room at Sydney FC and dreams of World Cup glory start to spring to mind.

The 34-year-old striker's club coach is Pierre Littbarski, who helped West Germany lift the trophy in 1990 when Argentina were defeated in Rome.

Despite a glittering domestic career with Manchester United, which included a European Cup winner's medal in 1999, Yorke has never got close to that level on the international stage.

All that could change in the next week when Trinidad and Tobago aim to clinch a place in the finals for the first time. They face Bahrain in the first leg of a World Cup play-off on Saturday.

Yorke has rediscovered his scoring touch in Australia with five goals in eight starts after a difficult time first at Blackburn and then latterly at Birmingham.

Littbarski is willing him to do well in the two big games.

'It is a very important thing for Dwight because to play in the World Cup is a highlight,' he told PA Sport.

'Everyone at Sydney is hoping he can make it because he has been great for us.

'We want him to experience the greatest level of play at the World Cup.'

Trinidad's dramatic 2-1 victory against Mexico in their last game took them into play-off contention.

Yorke has chalked up a huge amount of air miles to wear the colours but his commitment to the club has never wavered, according to Littbarski.

'Dwight has been performing for us at a very difficult time for him as he has had to do a lot of flying to World Cup matches,' he said.

'That is not an easy thing to do but he is very dedicated to his training and recovery.'
