CFU launches Womens Challenge Series 2018
cfufootball.org

Twenty teams from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) will be in the hunt for top honors in the CFU Women’s Challenge Series. The competition is scheduled for April and will be played across five venues, namely Warner Park Sporting Complex in St. Kitts; UWI JFF Captain Horace Burrell Center of Excellence in Jamaica; Stade Sylvia Cator in Haiti; Antigua Recreation Grounds in Antigua; and Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad.

CFU Interim President Randolph Harris said the Challenge Series addresses a dearth of competitive play for women footballers in the Caribbean and is a welcome addition to the calendar.

“This is both exciting and productive for our Member Associations. The respective women’s national teams have been itching to get off the mark for some time, so we are confident that the competition will redound to the benefit of the teams and football fans across the region,” Harris said.

The groups are:
Group A: St. Kitts and Nevis (hosts), St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Dominica
Group B: Jamaica (hosts), Barbados, Cuba and Turks and Caicos Islands
Group C: Haiti (hosts), Martinique, Dominican Republic and USVI
Group D: Antigua and Barbuda (hosts), Curacao, Guadeloupe and Montserrat
Group E: Trinidad & Tobago (hosts), Grenada, Guyana and Suriname

The CFU Women’s Challenge Series will be played over a period from April 18-29, 2018. Medals will be awarded to the group winners and runners-up.

CFU Women’s Challenge Series 2018 gets the ball rolling on re-commitment to female players.
TTFA Media.

Female footballers from the Caribbean region
will be in action this month, April, in the Caribbean Football Union Women’s Challenge
Series 2018. The competition, which will be played in five groups, addresses a dearth of
competitive play and is only the third CFU contest targeting women in the union’s
recent history.

The last competition was the 2014 Caribbean Women’s Cup, which was
won by Trinidad and Tobago. Haiti won the inaugural competition in 2000.

Jeaninne Wong-Loi-Sing is the Chairperson of the CFU Women’s Football Committee
and weighed in on the importance of the upcoming group contests.

Why is the CFU Women’s Challenge Series 2018 important to female players in the
region?

JWLS: The competition will be a showcase for the growth of women’s football in the
region and will be used as practice-and-development platform for different
stakeholders such as players, coaches, referees and local organizing Member
Associations.

Football in the Caribbean has been a predominantly male-focused event from grassroots
to adult.

While FIFA has, over the years, encouraged the allocation of 15 per cent of its
resources to the development of the women’s game, little attention if any was given to
its growth in the CFU. The staging of an annual event of this kind will allow for year-
round interest amongst our senior female players and as motivation for the younger
players.

The Caribbean is yet to see a senior women’s team reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup
and there therefore must be concerted efforts to change the status quo, hence the
introduction of the Challenge Series.

People may wonder why a group format instead of a Caribbean Cup. How would you explain this?

JWLS: Women’s football in the Caribbean, as well as worldwide, does not yet benefit from substantial financial allocation. Hence, a group format is the most efficient and cost-effective way to organize the events.

What are the primary objectives of the Women’s Football Committee insofar as an increase in competitions is concerned?

JWLS: A main objective is to create opportunities for the players to compete. This will also allow the countries, and the Women’s Football Committee, to compare their level of development, exchange experiences and hopefully learn from each other.

What next after the Challenge Series for the women footballers of the CFU?

JWLS: After the Challenge Series, the Women’s Football Committee will meet to discuss and define the action plans to help realize the goals and objectives for development as set out in the Strategic Plan of the CFU.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Senior Women gear up for CFU Challenge Series.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Women’s team are engaged in intense preparations ahead of their opening match in the Caribbean Football Union Women Challenge Series against Suriname on April 25th at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

This is the third women’s competition organized by the CFU, after the 2000 CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup and the 2014 CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup.The last competition was the 2014 Caribbean Women’s Cup, which was won by Trinidad and Tobago. Haiti won the inaugural competition in 2000.

It is being played across five venues, and serves as preparation for the CONCACAF Championship and World Cup qualifiers starting in May. Unlike the two previous CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup tournaments, there is no final round and thus no overall champion.

Group C action commenced in Haiti on Wednesday with the hosts defeating US Virgin Islands 7-0 while Cuba also getting past Barbados 7-0 in Group B action over in Kingston.

T&T captain Tasha St Louis said she anticipating the upcoming matches following T&T’s recent two-game exercise with Panama.

“I think these games are good for us because in in the past we really never hard a tournament such as this to prepare us for the World Cup qualifiers coming in May. These matches will help show where we are with fitness and how much work needs to be done,” she added.

Teammate Ayana Russell is also of the belief that the T&T team will find its rhythm at the right time as they use these matches to fine tune for the qualifiers.

“It’s a good opportunity to help improve  team dynamics on and off the field with us figuring out what each teammate likes, the advantages and challenges,” Russell said.

“It’s a good opportunity for the staff to evaluate what works and what does not. After this tournament there really can’t be much experimenting so having the opportunity to do that right before qualifiers is huge for us. The team chemistry and cohesiveness will improve every time we play together and every time we get an opportunity to spend more time together. These little things make the difference in the overall preparations of our team,” Russell added.

Kick off is 6:30 on April 25th with Guyana meeting Grenada in the first game of the double header from 4pm. Double headers will continue on April 27th and 29th

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Shade says wins on the cards for T&T in CFU Challenge Series.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Senior team forward Mariah Shade says the hosts will need to possess a desire for victory and prove it on the field of play when they begin their Caribbean Football Union Women’s Challenge Series against Suriname at the Ato Boldon Stadium from 6:30pm on Wednesday.

Shade and her teammates will undergo a final rehearsal at the TTFA Home of Football venue in Couva on Tuesday evening before opening their account against the Dutch-speaking nation in the second game of a double header which will see Grenada and Guyana squaring off from 4pm.

T&T are preparing for the start of their CONCACAF Caribbean 2019 World Cup qualifiers which will also be staged here in May. And Shade wants to see the team developing a winning habit beginning from this series.

“I think we need to come out with more energy and determination to win,” she told TTFA Media on Monday.

“Every game is important but we know as we continue our preparations how important these games are. Personally I except nothing but victories and I know the team does also. No excuses! We know we need to get the job done. It’s about time we start getting some wins,” Shade added.

Regarding the team’s preparations under head coach Jamaal Shabazz, the former France-based player said emphasis was also being placed on the team’s defensive shape.

“Training has been very much focused on our defensive work and responsibilities so we’ve been working a lot on that. We have also been working on movement in the attack and penetration along with being comfortable with the ball. These games will be good practice for us to see how well we can implement what we have been working on,” Shade said.

The Caribbean teams are no longer push overs and Shade hinted that her team has no intentions of letting up against any of the upcoming opponents.

“We know that the teams in the Caribbean are no walk over anymore so we cannot take anyone for granted. Many teams are stepping up and becoming more difficult to defeat but it’s again a good opportunity for us to just go out there and execute the game plan and show that we, Trinidad and Tobago are still the giants of Caribbean in Women’s Football and then look to take that dominance into the CONCACAF Level,” Shade said.

US-born duo in T&T women’s squad.
T&T Newsday Reports.

JAMAAL SHABAZZ, coach of the national women’s football team, has named the American-born duo of midfielder Liana Hinds and goalkeeper Saundra Baron in his team for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Challenge Series.

TT will be hosting Suriname (on Wednesday), Grenada (on Friday) and Guyana (April 29) in a round-robin group, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

This will be the first international action for the T&T women since a two-game home series against Panama last month. Panama won the first meeting 2-1 at Couva and the second game, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, ended in a 1-1 draw.

“We’re expecting to have three additions to the team that played against Panama,” said Shabazz, in a recent interview. “We’re bringing in Aaliyah Prince, the Under-17 player, Liana Hinds who was in the World Cup Under-17 (team of 2010) and Saundra Baron.”

Shabazz pointed out these matches will be an ideal test for the team before they kickstart their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

“This tournament is, in fact, a preparation because it comes about three weeks before the start of the qualifying tournament (for the World Cup),” Shabazz said. “It provides the ideal dress-rehearsal for the first leg of qualifiers. We welcome it with open arms. It gives us the opportunity to see what progress have been made since the Panama games, and what adjustments we’ll need to make.”

The CONCACAF qualifiers will begin in May and T&T will be hosting one of five qualifying groups —Group C — which comprises Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts/Nevis and the United States Virgin Islands. With regards to any fitness concerns, Shabazz said, “We have a couple people coming off injuries, (but) Rhea Belgrave will be out (as she’s) still recovering from a hamstring.

“Karyn Forbes is not yet 100 (per cent), Janine Francois now coming back from injury. We expect to use them in the tournament but try not to depend too heavily on them,” added the T&T women’s coach.

“It’s an opportunity to measure work and progress, and to try to replicate some of the things we’ll want to do in the (forthcoming) qualifiers,” he ended.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Women look to make winning start to CFU Women’s Challenge Series.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Women’s Team will be looking to begin their Caribbean Football Union Women’s Challenge Series campaign on a winning note when they host Suriname from 6:30pm in the second game of a double header at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Tuesday.

The encounter will be the second affair of a double header with Guyana coming up against Grenada from 4pm.

The T&T team had their final session at the venue on Tuesday and head coach Jamaal Shabazz told the media that he was focusing on the competition solely from the perspective of it being the idea preparation for T&T’s CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers which begin in May.

“We are excited for the tournament because it gives us the ideal dress rehearsal for our World Cup qualifiers in May,” said Shabazz. “Knowing that in May we have to face Caribbean opponents, it really is the ideal warm up settings for us.”

Regarding his preparation for the opener against Suriname, he added, “We are trying to do a little more work on how we get behind the defence. I’m pretty comfortable in how we operate in terms of winning the ball back and being compact. But now the transition to penetrate, to get behind the defence is causing some concern and this is what we working on to hopefully get it right tomorrow.”

On the composition of the squad he seemed pretty happy.

“This is really a good experiment for us. We have under 17 kids, under 20s, old veteran seniors and just the other day seniors so it’s a tremendous blend for us. They are fitting in well with each other. We have some players in the programme since 2000 and we have some who just came into the programme. To me it’s just what the doctor ordered.

Shabazz said he felt the players understood how important it would be to achieve winning results with solid performances in this competition.

“I hope to (get the desired results). I have every confidence in their commitment. I think they have the importance of this tournament to the overall women;s programme. Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are no longer the powerhouses that we used to be in women’s football in the Caribbean,” he added.

T&T Squad

Goalkeepers:-

Saundra Baron, Nicolette Craig.

T&T Women cruise past Suriname in CFU Challenge Series opener.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Women opened their 2018 CFU Women’s Challenge Series campaign with a convincing 7-0 victory over Suriname on Wednesday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

T&T rushed into a 6-0 lead prior to half time as the Dutch-speaking nation struggled to deal with their more experienced and technically better opponents in the second outing of the evening. Guyana and Grenada had earlier played to a scoreless draw as Group C opened at the TTFA Home of Football

T&T’s goals came from Shenelle Arjoon 5′ and 46′, Tasha St Louis 11′, Patrice Superville in 30′, Karyn Forbes in 36′, Mariah Shade in 41′ and Jonelle Cato, wife of National Senior Team player Cordell Cato, in the 52nd minute of play.

Arjoon opened the scoring with well taken item in the 5th minute and as T&T began to find their stride, in came a right side cross from Mariah Shade for Tasha St Louis to head home from near the six yard for a 2-0 advantage on eleven minutes.

Shade had a glorious chance to extend the lead moments later but fumbled after rounding the goalkeeper with the goal at her mercy.

On 29 minutes Arjoon almost got her second of the night but her effort cannoned off the left post. Soon after she would turn provider, slipping a pass from the left for Patrice Supervise to tap home on the half hour.

It was then Cato’s turn to rock the bar with a long range effort before Karyn Forbes netted T&T’s fourth item in the 36th minute. T&T were in total control as their opponents could hardly mount a decent attack in home team’s half of the pitch. St Louis also got involved in the crossbar challenge as her attempt rebounded into play in the 39th minute.

Shade would eventually give the home fans more to cheer with a goal in the 41st minute and Arjoon increased Suriname’s troubles with a 46th minute item. The second half was pretty much the same with T&T controlling proceedings but with only one further goal to show off Cato’s boot seven minutes in.

“All in all I was pleased with the effort and the fact that we scored seven goals but I do not think it was a very strong Suriname team tonight,” head coach Jamaal Shabazz said after the win.

But he did express concerns on the team’s drop in performance after changes were made in the second half.

“I thought the gave a lot of rooms on the sides of the field and we made use of it early in the game. But the worrisome thing is when we took out three of the veteran players, Tasha St Louis, Karyn Forbes and Ayanna Russell, I think we lost our way a bit and this is worrying when you look at the depth we are trying to create in the team. All in all pleased that we scored seven goals today but far from making cartwheels and jumping for joy,” Shabazz added.

T&T faces Grenada from 6:30pm on Friday with Guyana meeting Suriname from 4pm.

This after Arjoon netted a pair of goals in the fifth and 46th minutes to lead T&T to a convincing 7-0 victory over Suriname on Wednesday night at the same venue.

Prince hattrick leads T&T to 8-1 win over Grenada.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Women strutted around with their scoring boots on in the second half of Friday night’s CFU Women’s Challenge Series, scoring seven unanswered goals in an 8-1 thumping of Grenada in their second encounter at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Young Aaliyah Prince came off the bench in the second half to notch a hattrick to lead the Women Warriors to the resounding victory. Prince netted in the 65th, 79th and 84th minutes after both teams were tied 1-1 at half time. Karyn Forbes put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute but Grenada hit back after a T&T lapse at the back, with Kristal Julien putting the ball into an unprotected net in the 16th minute.

Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz, later admitted in the post-match press briefing that he had to shake his players up at half time with some stern words and it seemed to have worked for skipper Tasha St Louis and her teammates.

Natasha St Louis put T&T 2-1 ahead in the 46th and Liana Hinds converted in the 63rd. St Louis got her second item on 69 minutes as T&T pulled away from their opponents who had no answer in the second half. Prince went on to get her hattrick and Forbes finished things off with a goal from way out on the left in the 91st minute.

Guyana and Suriname played to a 2-2 draw in the first match, leaving T&T atop the Group with six points. T&T meets Guyana from 5:30pm on Sunday in Couva following the 3pm kick off between Grenada and Suriname.

Shabazz worried over team’s complacency.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

Coach admits half-time rant spurred on TT women footballers…

TT women’s football team coach Jamaal Shabazz admitted using a harsh approach towards his squad, during the half-time interval, to spur them towards a convincing 8-1 win over Grenada, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Friday evening.

Action was in Group E of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Challenge Series.

The scores were locked at 1-1 at the midway point of the match, with Karyn Forbes scoring from a corner in the 12th minute, while Kristal Julien equalised four minutes later.

However, TT went on a goal-spree in the second half, courtesy substitute striker Aaliyah Prince (66th, 79th and 84th), another reserve Natasha St Louis (46th and 69th), US-born midfielder Liana Hinds (63rd) and Forbes (90th).

The mild-mannered and soft-spoken Shabazz admitted in a post-game interview, “It’s unfortunate that the coach have got to change his behaviour at half-time. I never get angry in the game but, in so many years, I can’t remember getting so angry in a half-time discussion.”

Asked what he said in the dressing room, Shabazz replied, “I thought we were playing for the likes and not playing for the love, to take a thing out of young (Chronixx) song. We were not understanding that we needed to play football.”

The former T&T and Guyana men’s coach continued, “We were expecting to just show up on the pitch and those days are gone. Fifteen years ago, we would just show up against Grenada and we don’t have to play. Some players are living in that era, in that mindset. We’ve got to work hard and play.”

Unlike their second-half display against Suriname on Wednesday, when they missed a host of chances, T&T capitalised on a number of opportunities in the latter stages of Friday’s match.

“You can see that if we play to our potential, at least we’ll be five goals ahead of these teams,” said Shabazz. “The challenge is to get us to play. We got that in the second half. When we do this, it gives opportunities for the younger ones.”

Shabazz acknowledged that he was impressed with the performances of Prince and fellow T&T Under-20 player, midfielder Shenieka Paul.

This tournament serves as preparation for the start of the CONCACAF Championship and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers in May.

And Shabazz stressed that the team’s performance will need to seriously improve for T&T to have a chance of booking a place in the World Cup in France.

“We’ve always have got to think about CONCACAF,” said the veteran coach. “In 2014 we were one point from the World Cup. If we want to talk about that, we must not be satisfied with this performance. The result (is) okay but the performance (is) far from what is required to go to the next level.”

T&T will conclude their Women’s Challenge Series Group E participation today against Guyana, at Couva.

“It’s an important game for us,” said Shabazz. “I think Guyana (are) the most organised of the three teams that we have to play. We want to take it seriously again. It’s not just the result, it’s trying to see how we can get, into the game, some of the things that we’ve worked on in practice. We want our country to be proud, we want to remove the spirit of negativity that pervades (throughout).”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Women top Group E with 3-1 win over Guyana.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Women topped Group E of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Challenge Series when they recorded their third consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over Guyana at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Sunday evening.

T&T got goals from Shanieka Paul in the 12th, Kayrn Forbes in the 75th and Jonelle Cato in the 88th. Suriname edged Grenada 6-5 in the earlier encounter to finish second in the group with four points ahead of Guyana (2pts) and Grenada (1pt).

T&T took the lead when Paul forced her way into a good shooting position atop the penalty box and hit a well placed shot into the net. T&T were not as dominant in their previous two outings as Guyana were disciplined for most parts and made a committed attempt to stay organized. They would find the equalizer in the 63rd minute through a penalty by Mariam El-Masri after a hand ball offense by T&T.

Guyana would however gift the second goal to the hosts when Canadian-born goalkeeper Aneesa O’Brien dropped a right side cross and Forbes was on spot to slot home for a 2-1 lead.

Cato would then take her time to chest down a loose ball way out on the right  before swinging goalwards to see the ball go through O’Brien and into the goal for T&T’s third item.

T&T head coach Jamaal Shabazz later expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress ahead of next month’s CONCACAF Caribbean round of 2019 World Cup qualifiers.

“After the hardships comes the ease. The women’s programme has has some tremendous hardships and it is good that we can win today and feel some ease.  We feel good that in a long time we’ve not played in a tournament and now be able to come out victorious at home,” Shabazz said.

“They did well, they worked hard. Guyana played a smart game. They gave us room to play in front, they denied the room behind them. They gave respect to us and not try to press but then chose good moments to press. All in all we played against a sensible opponent and I thought our ladies handled it well as well,” he added.

“Lots of good ( we can take from this). We were able to score goals. We are smelling again like the team that can be a top team in the Caribbean. It’s been a long time, maybe since 2014 that we could say we are a top team in the Caribbean. Now that feeling is coming again. The girls are much  more confident but we still have a lot more work to do in terms of being able to go forward and establish dominance.”

Results

Trinidad and Tobago 3 (Shenieka Paul 12, Karyn Forbes 75, Jonelle Cato 88) v Guyana 1 (Mariam El-Masri 63-Pen).

T&T's Soca Princesses pulled off a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Guyana in the final game of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women's Challenge Series at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, last night.

The Guyanese who drew their first two matches against Grenada 0-0, and Suriname 2-2, sought to solidify its defence in the opening moments, but it worked until Aaliyah Prince weaved her way past two defenders from on top of the area and the ball rolled invitingly for Shenieka Paul to fire past goalkeeper Aneesa O'Brien in the 12th minute.

T&T, playing its best game of the tournament, kept ball possession for long periods, but struggled to get past a defence made steady by an increase in numbers. Coach Jamaal Shabazz decision to push defender Liana Hinds and Karyn Forbes into more attacking positions did create the chances, which saw Shanelle Arjoon twice striking the crossbar and Forbes' long-range attempt also crashing off the bar earlier.

Later Arjoon, exchanging passes with Prince in a neat build-up ended with Arjoon shooting wide of the post before the half-time interval which the host took a slim 1-0 advantage into the dressing room.

After the break, the Guyanese got the equalizer when Naomi Guerra handled the ball in the area from Jinelle Cato's pass in the 63rd minute and Mariam El Masri beat goalkeeper Nicolette Craig with the spot-kick.

But T&T regained the lead and control of the contest when Cato stormed down the right flank and her shot slipped through the grasp of O'Brien in the 75th minute and Forbes was on spot to fire into an empty net.

Moments later, Prince missed out on a golden opportunity to push her team further ahead when Kedie Johnson pick her out with a left side cross, but the pint-size striker failed to convert.

Guyana problems deepened when the team was reduced to 10 players after El Masri was sent off for her second bookable offence in the 85th minute.

The host wasted no time and capitalised on its strength in numbers when Cato long-range shot from the right side again went through the hands of the goalkeeper and into the goal for a comfortable 3-1 win in the end.

T&T was later adjudged winner of the tournament after winning all three matches which included (Suriname 7-0; Grenada 8-1), while Suriname finished second, Guyana third and Grenada fourth.

In the first match of the night's double-header programme, Suriname got the better of Grenada in a high-scoring affair that ended 6-5.

T&T's Forbes and Arjoon finished as joint top-scores with four goals each.

Shabazz: We want to compete at Concacaf level.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

T&T Women's footballers will return to the practice pitch today after getting just one day off yesterday, following their triumph at the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Challenge Series at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva on Sunday night.

The team is preparing to contest the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Caribbean Round from May 21 at home and coach Jamaal Shabazz said yesterday he wants to be able to compete with the Concacaf teams. "One area we have to work on to become competitive in Concacaf is our attitude. We have to give more effort on winning the ball, and also we're making that transition into how we attack," Shabazz said.

On Sunday, however, that didn't seem to be an issue though with the team producing 18 goals which included a classy display against Guyana to record a 3-1 victory and win the tournament.

Despite 7-0 and 8-1 victories over Suriname and Grenada respectively, it was the Guyanese that brought the best out of the T&T women, who showed the attitude of a winning team by displaying progressive possession, patience, ability to switch the ball from side to side while under pressure and created numerous chances that needed the intervention of dogged defending to prevent the T&T strikers from scoring.

Shabazz insists though that while he was pleased with the way his girls responded during their matches, they must not lose focus of the fact that they will be facing a much higher standard of football when the Concacaf qualifiers begin. "We still have work to do, as it is still a work in progress," Shabazz said.

He noted, "The girls gave a good account of themselves and we are now starting to look like a top team in the Caribbean once again, but the reality is that we are not there yet. We are aspiring to compete at the Concacaf level, and we want to do so without some of the top players that kept us competitive at that level for many years."

The team is expected to be strengthened over the coming days as more overseas based players will be coming to join the squad, making competition for places more difficult.

Shabazz: We can be Caribbean force again.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

As focus shifts to 2019 World Cup qualifying…

NATIONAL WOMEN’S football team coach Jamaal Shabazz is turning his attention towards the start of the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship qualification, which will get going this month.

TT will be hosting Group C, alongside Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts/Nevis and the US Virgin Islands, in First Round action from May 19-27.

In total, there will be five groups involved in First Round games this month, with the group winners advancing to the Final Round, from July 21-29, from which the top three will progress to the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

Eight teams will participate in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, in the US, from October 4-17. The top three teams will automatically book spots to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, while the fourth-placed team will engage in a playoff with the third-placed team from CONMEBOL (South American governing body).

T&T finished their Group E participation in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Challenge Series with a 100-per cent record (7-0 over Suriname on Wednesday, 8-1 against Grenada on Friday and 3-1 over Guyana on Sunday) at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva. In a post-game interview on Sunday, Shabazz said, “We’re back on the field for a recovery session on Tuesday (today) and then (from) Thursday full speed ahead again. No time to rest.”

“This tournament did not qualify us for anything,” added the T&T coach. “What it has done is renewed our confidence and lifted the spirits of the programme. Now it’s back down to serious preparation for the qualifying tournament.”

Reflecting on Sunday’s match, Shabazz pointed out, “There is a (verse) in the Quran which (translates to) ‘God says after the hardship comes the ease’. So it’s a good feeling. Too much hardship with regards to the result that we can get an ease, and that we can smell the feeling that we can become a force in the Caribbean again.”

Asked what was the ease that he was referring to, Shabazz responded, “The fact that we won three games, the fact we scored a bundle of goals, the fact that players are growing in confidence and seeing the need to get up off their laurels and work harder, and not just think that the victory will come based on the reputation that was established many years ago.”

Overall, the ex-national and Guyana men’s coach was pleased with the desire to score from the TT women attackers, as well as the players’ fitness levels.

He added, “I think the players have responded well to being pushed. Going forward in the preparations for the qualifiers, I think that it’s going to be very competitive for spots.”

On the other side of the coin, he disclosed, “If I’ll have to look at one negative, I think the veteran players, when things don’t go well, have got to show a lot more leadership, on the field.”

Shabazz was pleased with the turnout of fans at the Couva venue for the three matches. “It’s always good that the public can come out. We’ll want to encourage them to keep coming out when the tournament starts,” he ended.

With a five-team group and matches every two days, has the technical staff requested a larger squad?

Shabazz replied, “I am going to request to the TTFA (TT Football Association) that we’re allowed to have a squad of 23 players. To ask people to play four games in eight days is going to be very difficult.”

Excluding goalkeeper Saundra Baron, who has returned to the US, the rest of the 20-member squad will continue training for the qualifiers.

Shabazz noted that a few foreign-born players will be added to the training squad, as well as the North America-based trio of Kayla Taylor and twins Khadidra and Khadisha Debesette.
