Spectacular to have had Shaka in the booth. For anyone who has been away from SSFL football for a lengthy period, it would be surreal to have live quality TV coverage, to see Crystal Sobers as the ref, to have heard Shaka's analysis and to have that twinned with Sancho and Murray. Really, the missing ingredient is a full house.

Yeah boy.  I was real impressed to see the game live on mih phone, followed it all the way home and then watched the end on the TV.  Real good game.  Long time the Stadium would have been full but the attendance was more than a typical Pro League and certainly more than National games recently.

I eh know Pres eh win de title in 40 years before today!!   :o

Nice man....ah happy for them..... :applause: :applause:

Pleasantville retain National Girls Intercol title

Pleasantville retain National Girls Intercol title
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

PLEASANTVILLE Secondary retained its coveted Coca Cola National Girls Intercol title by trumping Signal Hill 3-1, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Wednesday.

From as early in as the fifth minute, eventual Player of the Match Tsai-Anne Fernandez, sent the defending champions ahead after rifling home a freekick past Signal Hill custodian, Aaliyah Alexander, just outside the penalty box. Although the Tobago backline of Jelese Alexander, Derisha Bristol and Tamia Alfred towered over Pleasantville’s petite forwards, strikers Alexcia Ali and Aaliyah Pascall capitalised on their low centre of gravity, bobbing and weaving past the trio.

Pleasantville continued to press for an extended lead but Kayla Mallaro handed up a golden opportunity minutes later, one on one against Alexander, shooting wide. Signal Hill, though, capitalised on their few and far between opportunities via Tiahj Crichlow, who squeezed past Pleasantville’s defender to slot away and level the play field minutes before the half time period.

At the resumption, Signal Hill returned with a rejuvenated spirit and sought to put pressure on the defending champions. Pleasantville however, continued to defend well and control the midfield while Ali and Pascall searched for the go-ahead goal. In the 72nd minute, Krissy Mitchell broke the deadlock in similar fashion, smashing home a well-hit free kick into the right corner.

Signal Hill showed signs of promise in the remaining minutes but Ali would seal the deal for the South squad, finding the back of the net with just two minutes to go. As the final whistle sounded, the Pleasantville girls and their vociferous supporters erupted in celebration as coach Brian London punched the air.

Speaking with the victorious coach after his team’s well-worked win, London was elated to see his squad’s hard work pay off after such a hectic season of football.

“It’s a very important win for us because we set goals to retain the title. The Big Five was one of our targets and even though we did not win there, we will settle for the League and National Intercol this time around. The team put in a lot of work in training and did a lot of free kicks. Those free kick sessions definitely paid off today. It’s good to see the fruits of our labours. Our programme is doing well and we will continue working with the younger players to step up and hold the reigns,” said London with a huge smile.

Meanwhile, Player of the Match Fernandez, expressed elation with the team’s overall performance. After receiving her award, Fernandez maintained her composure and was pleased to get past the Tobagonians, who ousted the southerners in this year’s Big Five final.

“This is my first year playing for Pleasantville and it was indeed a pleasure to see us win today. It was a tough game for us because they (Signal Hill) beat us in this year’s Big Five final, so we know they would be no run over. We really wanted to ensure the title stayed at our school. I must say thank you to our coaching staff and everyone who contributed to our success today. The girls deserve it,” stated Fernandez.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Sinclair guides Pres to first InterCol title.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Jardel Sinclair may have scored the most important goal of his entire life yesterday.

Although it wasn’t anything spectacular, his simple tap in from N’Kosi Charles’ right-side centre in the 94th minute, earned Presentation College, San Fernando their first-ever Coca Cola National InterCol title with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over San Juan North Secondary at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The win was also sweet revenge for the southerners, who were beaten by San Juan in 2016 final.

A tearful Pres coach Shawn Cooper said afterwards that it took years and months of hard work but they were finally able to get the job done.

The southerners had been the winners of numerous South Zone InterCol and national league titles previously, but the National InterCol had always eluded them, at least until the multi-talented Sinclair was taken in at the institution and broke the jinx yesterday.

San Juan North, beaten by Presentation in the Premier Division of the SSFL, forged ahead when a throw-in from the left side reached an unmarked Renaldo Boyce in the Pres area in the fourth minute. Boyce collected the throw-in and quickly released to Isaiah Chase, who hit hard and low shot past Pres goalkeeper Isaiah Williams for the 1-0 advantage.

Cooper’s attempt to avoid being beaten twice by San Juan in the final received a major dent at this point.

However, his team settled quickly and was rewarded after a series of attacks on the San Juan goal. Hardworking striker Ackeel Jacob was released down the left flank and he quickly centred for the unmarked Jaiye Sheppard to steer home in the 19th minute.

Pres, who dethroned Naparima College for the 2019 South Zone InterCol crown, had only themselves to blame for not taking the lead in the moments that followed. Sinclair’s acrobatic attempt from Jacob’s lifted pass in the box sailed overbar in the 36th minute. Then Sheppard, who was picked out all alone in the box from a right-side cross, put his header wide with the goal at his mercy.

The scores thus remained 1-1 at the half and when play resumed, Pres launched yet another attack at goal, sending the speedy Sinclair down the right flank to centre for Naim Bisnath to hit an uncontrolled left-footed effort over the crossbar.

The game appeared to be heading for a penalty shoot-out until substitute Charles, following a god bit of skill on the right side, pulled a cross-back for Sinclair to guide into the goal for the winner in the fourth minute of time added on for stoppages and send the southern crowd into wild celebrations.

However, before the end could have been signalled, referee Crystal Sobers had to produce red cards for Presentation’s Jacob and Justin Cornwall, as well as San Juan’s Elisha Garcia for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Heartbreak for San Juan North: Late strike ends ‘Lions’ Intercol drought
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

A 92nd-minute strike from midfielder, Jardel Sinclair, put an end to Presentation College San Fernando’s 44-year Coca Cola National Intercol title drought and also sank hearts of the San Juan North-faithful when action climaxed in the 2019 finals at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Wednesday.

After 94 minutes of end-to-end action, Presentation College emerged 2-1 winners following a gruelling encounter which was sadly marred by an ugly last-minute spat, resulting in three players being sent off in the dying seconds. Amidst an explosion of celebration, coach of the newly-crowned champions, Sean Cooper, seemed lost for words after the well-deserved victory.

“Great!” he said, followed by a long pause. “Great! We worked hard for it. Nobody expected us to do this well this year. It’s our rebuilding year. The win is even sweeter having conquered perennial champions Naparima College along the way. More importantly, we kept the titles in South. Despite what anyone says, South continues to dominate schools football.”

In the opening minutes of the first period, San Juan North looked good up front while "Pres" seemed to have a shaky start. San Juan though, capitalised on their fluidity and silenced the hundreds of chanting South fans when Isaiah Chase latched on to a loose ball, in the Presentation area, and notched home the opening goal in the fifth minute.

The "Pres Lions" though, seemed undaunted. Trailing by one goal in the early stages, the Aleem Barclay-led unit buckled down and began to string some nice passes together. Forwards, Ackeel “Hulk” Jacob and Jaiye Sheppard continuously ran at the San Juan defence as they pressed for the equalising goal. San Juan also created several chances but the "Pres" backline stood firm.

With minutes to go before the break, Presentation's custodian launched a long ball which fell to the feet of Sheppard. He sprinted past one defender and then laid it off to a bursting Jacob on the left flank. Jacob rose his head in search of a team-mate and smartly played a penetrative ball behind the San Juan defence, to find a charging Sheppard, who slotted away past goalie Kareem Rodriguez.

At the resumption, both teams seemed to take some pace off their attack. Most of the second half action took place in the middle of the field as Presentation and San Juan sought to conserve their energy. San Juan’s front two, skipper Ronaldo Boyce and Jerry Morris, tried valiantly to break the deadlock but was constantly crowded out by Presentation’s Adica Ash and company.

Both teams had their moments of brilliance in the second period but cancelled each other out on every attempt. The game was also stopped on a few occasions as cramps became a norm due to the extensive mental and physical pressure placed on these young men. However, with four minutes allotted for extra time to go, "Pres" opted for one last charge.

Nkosi Charles collected on the right flank and travelled goalwards. There he would find a surging Sinclair, who made no mistake, hammering home one of Presentation College’s most historic goals in Intercol history. Ato Boldon Stadium exploded in jubilation as San Juan dropped their heads in dismay. Sinclair flung his jersey off in celebration and sprinted to his erupting schoolmates, diving into a sea of celebration.

With just seconds to go and tensions running high, Jacob again burst down the right side and was fouled by a San Juan defender near the corner flag. The "Pres" striker opted to live up to his nickname “Hulk” and confronted the North player, which led to a short scuffle. Players from both teams sprinted over in an attempt to quell the situation, but their presence seemed to add fuel to the fire.

Officials from the Presentation and San Juan camp also got involved in the small fracas. Eventually, the San Juan defender was ejected, followed by Jacob and Justin Cornwall, for their unacceptable involvement. Seconds later, the referee had seen enough, and blew off the heated title match as "Pres" fans stormed the pitch in elation.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

NFA U17s in US ‘Winter Showcase’

NFA U17s in US ‘Winter Showcase’
T&T Express

The Northern Football Association [NFA] ends a successful year with a historic opportunity for its U17 team. After three months of screening, training and practice matches, 18 players have been selected to represent the NFA at the ‘US Soccer Boy’s Winter Showcase’ in Tampa, Florida from the 26th-31st December.

This is the first time a Trinidad and Tobago team has been accepted and allowed to compete in such a prestigious tournament which is used by the US Soccer Federation to identify and select their national youth players. This tournament is also well attended by US University Soccer Coaches and Scouts which is a major plus.

President of the NFA, Anthony Harford thanks all the persons who assisted; the Sponsors, the US Embassy, volunteer staff, parents and players who played a role in coordinating and covering all the Tour aspects from airfare, hotel, Visas, training, field use and pulling off three major fund raisers, all within the last three months.

Having seen most of these boys participate and develop in the Republic Bank Youth League [RBYL] and the Secondary Schools Football League [SSFL], we thought it fitting to make this trip when the invitation came. It gives our north youth players an opportunity to experience the fringe of national football, and to possibly get scholarships and continue their academics and to develop their football career along a professional pathway.

It also augurs well for our Clubs in the NFA, who have steadfastly done yeoman development work. The players come from our top youth Clubs like Trendsetter Hawks, Queen’s Park, RSSR, North Coast and Petit Valley/Diego Martin United. To see a player making the team from Blanchisseuse is a great accomplishment that there is talent and that football is being played in all our north communities.

Players: Jacob Castillo, Saeed Pompey Charles, Emmanuel Thomas, Daniel David, Daniel Lake, Malachi Celestine, Jude-Anthony Johnson, Aaron Moruf, Jordan Romany, Andrew De Gannes, Antonio Chee Ting, Delaney Zamore, Shervohnez Hamilton, Jahiem Ashby, Kaihim Thomas, Luke Savery [Cpt], Negus Jack and Jumaane McNeil. Volunteer Staff: Marlon Phillip, Paul Decle [Coaches] Kerry Castillo, Nicholas Lochan [Managers] and Donnette Mark [medic].

Sheppard, Ali cop SSFL Players of the Year

Sheppard, Ali cop SSFL Players of the Year
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Jaiye Sheppard (Presentation College, San Fernando) and Alexcia Ali (Pleasantville Secondary) were crowned male and female Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) Players of the Year respectively at the 2019 Awards and Presentation Ceremony, which kicked off at the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

Both players were instrumental in leading their respective teams to victory at last year’s Coca Cola National Intercol Tournament. Sheppard led the charge for the SSFL’s top five male athletes and was joined by Isa Bramble (Naparima College), Emmanuel John (San Juan North), Josiah King (Carapichaima East) and Tyrese Spicer (St. Augustine).

Additionally, Ali, hoisted the tournament’s most prestigious individual prize for a second consecutive year. The 19-year old was joined in league’s top five female performers by teammates Latifha Pascall and Tsai-Anne Fernandez, Celine Loraine (Signal Hill) and Afiyah Cornwall.

Speaking with Newsday following the presentation, Sheppard was elated with his capture of the tournament’s most prestigious individual prize and remains optimistic for the 2020 season. According to Presentation coach, Sean Cooper, Sheppard will be placed with responsibility of captaining the title-winning squad when the competition resumes in September.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win this award and I would not have been here without the works of Presentation’s coaching staff and my teammates,” he said. “We had a great season, bolstered by a younger group of players. Altogether, we decided to work hard and God gave us what we deserved. I am proud, not only of myself, but what our team was able to achieve as a unit.”

Meanwhile, after two years of total dominance in the Coca Cola Girls Intercol, Pleasantville’s Ali concludes her SSFL career at the end of the academic year. However, having captured back-to-back Girls Intercol and Player of the Year awards, she leaves contented.

“It’s a great achievement for me on a personal level and I’m very happy for what I have achieved throughout my stay at Pleasantville. I thank my mother, coaches, teachers and teammates for always pushing me to do my best. Going forward, I would like to get a sport scholarship and play football abroad.”

Team and individual accolades were also presented to top zonal performers in the Form One/Under-13 Boys (Fruta); Giants Division/Under-14 Boys, Under-15 Girls, Under-16 Boys and Under-20 Boys and Girls (Malta); Championship Division Boys and Girls, Big Five, Premiership and National (Shell/First Citizens Bank).

In his address to the multitude of student-athletes, coaches and teachers at the ceremony, president of the TT Football Association (TTFA) William Wallace, credited the dedicated efforts of those who contested last season’s grueling competition.

The newly-appointed TTFA head also held one minute’s silence in memory of former local football presidents, Oliver Camps and Raymond Tim-Kee, ex-national players Jason Marcano and Shahdon Winchester, all of who passed away last year. Strangely enough, mere hours before the start of the awards, the national football fraternity was again plunged into mourning as former National Under-17 captain, Roderick Anthony, died in a car crash in Tobago.

“Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard,” said the former SSFL leader. “Give one hundred percent all the time. You will not only improve your game but also motivate those around you.”

The feature address was delivered by former National senior men and youth team coach, Hannibal Najjar, who urged the youngsters to maintain focus on their personal, sporting and academic goals.

Other dignitaries present were former player Everald ‘Gally’ Cummings, ex-FIFA referee/instructor Osmond Downer, Ministry of Education advisor Cheryl Ann Wilkinson, Coca Cola senior marketing manager Maritza Ballack, Fruta marketing manager Cindy Gafoor-Lares, Malta brand manager Kenny Maharaj, Shell community liaison officer Oji Borel, First Citizens Bank manager Baldath Maharaj, Central Zone chairman Tara Bansi and other members of the TTFA executive.

Miami-based agency to scout SSFL stars
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Long-time national Intercol title sponsor, Coca Cola, is currently working with a Miami-based scouting agency to provide some of T&T’s talented Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) players with an opportunity to secure international scholarships and contracts.

This initiative serves as a springboard for the season’s top league, zonal and Intercol performers (male and female). These players will have a chance to exhibit their athletic skills in front of varying foreign-based scouts via exhibition games.

At the 2019 SSFL award ceremony on Thursday, Coca Cola senior marketing manager Maritza Ballack revealed the plan aimed at providing a platform for young, transitioning footballers.

“We are engaged with a Miami-based scouting agency who is working on the full plan for this exhibition day,” said Ballack during her address.

“The top teams of each season will be able to showcase their players at special exhibition games set up with international scouts in the hope that some of our brightest stars will be picked up by foreign schools and clubs.”

Within the coming weeks, Ballack and her team will share this plan with the SSFL body for finalisation. Once all elements are reviewed and confirmed, the decade-long sponsor is preparing to execute this initiative in March with the top boys and girls Intercol schools invited to participate.

The Coca Cola representative said her organisation is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as National Intercol title sponsors. Additionally, the preceding season was Coca Cola’s first full sponsorship of the girls’ competition. According to her, Coca Cola remains committed to the cause.

She also hinted to the outgoing SSFL president and recently appointed T&T Football Association head, William Wallace, that Coca Cola is willing to partner with football's local governing body.

“I can confidently say that we will be continuing our sponsorship as title sponsors for many years to come for both the Coca Cola girls and boys Intercol. We pledge to continue support of the SSFL for hopefully another ten (years) and beyond. It has been a pleasure working with you Mr Wallace and I’m ready to partner with you and the TTFA as well. Just say the word.”

Congratulations goes out to former star defender Juaval Roberts as he takes another step in furthering his sport and academic career.

The national beach footballer got accepted on a partial scholarship to Ottawa University Arizona where he’ll be reunited with former ‘Pres’ stand out player Jordan Riley.

Presentation College, San Fernando will like to thank Mr. Roberts for his contribution to the college and wish him many more success in his new journey - Presentation College Lions

Tallman, if we were to do a spreadsheet by school and the securing of a foreign contract, I am curious what the rank order of the schools would be.

At some point I would prefer to exclude players who played beyond X number of years in the Pro League ... to better drill down on what I think is more significant. Of course those not having played domestically are not excluded.

I bet this is data the SSFL doh have organized structurally.
