THE TRINIDAD and Tobago men’s 4x400-metre relay team advanced to the finals of the event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, US on Saturday.
The TT team included Dwight St Hillaire, Jereem Richards, Asa Guevara and Kashief King. Running in lane two of heat one, the TT quartet clocked three minutes, 02.75 seconds (3:02.75) for fourth place. It was enough to qualify for Sunday’s final at 10.35 pm (TT time).
The top three in each of the two heats plus the next two fastest teams earned a place in the final.
The US won heat one in 2:58.96, Japan were second in 3:01.53 and Jamaica third in 3:01.59.
TT were third halfway through the second leg with Richards in possession of the baton.
During the third leg, TT had work to do to finish as one of the three automatic qualifiers in the heat as Guevara was in fourth place.
With 200m left in the race, King made a move and was in second place briefly. However, Japan and Jamaica made a late surge to finish ahead of TT.
Qualifying from heat two were Belgium (3:01.96), Czech Republic (3:02.42), Poland (3:02.51) and France (3:03.13).
TT women’s long jumper Tyra Gittens did not advance to the finals of the event.
Gittens needed to jump 6.75 metres or at least finish in the top 12 among the field of over 25 athletes to qualify for the final.
Competing in Group B alongside 12 other athletes, Gittens jumped 6.22m on her first attempt, 6.44m on her second and fouled her third and final jump.
It was only enough to finish tenth in Group B and 19th overall.
German Malaika Mihambo ended first in Group B with a leap of 6.84m.
American Quanesha Burks won Group A and has the best overall jump heading into the final with a 6.86m effort.
The finals will be held on Sunday from 8.50 pm TT time.

TRINIDAD AND Tobago finished without a medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
On the final day on Sunday, the TT men's mile (4x400-metre) relay team placed fifth in the final, in a season's best time of three minutes 0.03 seconds, but they will leave the US with no silverware after the ten-day competition.
The TT team, featured Dwight St Hillaire, Jereem Richards, Shakeem McKay and Asa Guevara, were drawn in lane nine.
St Hillaire, who ran the first leg, was in the middle of the pack after the first leg, but Richards had an outstanding run, as TT moved up to second spot, behind the United States.
McKay struggled to keep up the pace in the third leg, as the US opened up a massive lead, while Jamaica and Belgium challenged for the silver.
Guevara fought valiantly in the final stages, but the US had long secured the gold medal (two minutes 56.17 seconds), with Jamaica (2:58.58), Belgium (2:58.72) and Japan (2:59.51) trailing.
Rounding off the field were Botswana (3:00.14), France (3:01.35) and Czech Republic (3:01.63).
This was the second time TT made a final at the World Championships; Richards placed sixth in the men's 200m final on Thursday.
The next World Championships will take place in Budapest, Hungary from August 19-27, 2023.
